[SOLVED] Boot problem- blank screen flashing white dash

Q: [SOLVED] Boot problem- blank screen flashing white dash

I have an Hp pavilion a1226n desktop computer and shut off the power this morning during a bad storm. I used the regular procedures and shut it down correctly, but when i tried to boot it up earlier this morning, the only thing that comes up is a blank black screen with a flashing white dash in the upper left hand corner. I have already tried to remove reset the BIOS by removing the battery and then later restarting, but it did not help at all. Also, it wont even boot far enough for me to start in safe/real mode. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the help

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi sherm12789 and welcome to TSF

Start up your computer by either tapping the F1, F2, F4, F6, F8, F10, F11, F12, or Delete keys to access the systems BIOS. For the exact information on what key to start up the System BIOS refer back to Original Manufacturer System Documentation.

After getting into the BIOS, look for a page that would have something like, eg. PC Health Screen or System Monitoring Page. When you have found a page similar to this post back what the BIOS says for your temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds.

I have been having problems with my Dell Dimension 5000 since this morning, basically I switch it on and all I get is a blank blank screen with a white dash blinking in the top left corner.

I can't access safe mode or bios settings using the function keys and I can't get further then this blank black creen with flashing dash.

I have taken out my gfx card and cleaned the dust out of the fan, checked all the cable connections inside and out. I also checked other posts for solutions but could not find any that related to mine as I can't access anything. I have also checked the Dell Diagnostic lights which indicate:

Other failure has occurred.
Ensure that the cables are properly connected to the system board from the hard drive, CD drive, and DVD drive.
Check the computer message that appears on your monitor screen.
If the problem persists, contact Dell.

Dell don't seem helpful as the computer is out of warrenty and I even get passed around or hung up on. Only thing I can think of is that my hard drive might of gone as it makes a reading noise about five times then I hear nothing even though I replaced the HD about two months ago.

Sorry for the essay, hope I can sort it out!!

Thats apart of the operating system, is not an error so there is nothing to fix.

UNLESS thats all you ever see, but I got the impression from the post your computer still starts just fine.

If your machine is not booting and stuck at the "flashing dash" you may need to do a system repair.

My computer, which was running windows 10 without much issue, is now completely unusable for reasons beyond my comprehension. After bios messages I now only have a blinking white dash on a black screen.

I have tried various repairs, with the windows recovery usb. All automatic repairs fail due to the disk "being locked", so i have tried a few guides which involved bcdboot commands which have failed to fix anything. One command was bcdboot g: which gave an error like failed copying boot files (i forget the exact wording) .

Could some kind soul point me towards a fix, im tearing my hair out! Many thanks!

First, i restarted my stupid computer
Then, i got that grub error.
I happily fixed that.
However, when I restarted it again,
I got stuck at black screen with stupid blinkking white dash.
So I use the Recovery Disc thingy
And i clicked that first option.
Then it says, something like
unable to fix it.
Then it says that the stupid missing boot thingy is missing.
Googled for solution.
Tried those command prompt like
Fixmbr or scanos
(it says theres an installation
I typed Y for yes and still,
That boot missing chkdsk thingy still pops up)
Remove hardwares (wait whats a hardware is it those usb thingy?)
Checked the BIOS which I googled again for its meaning.(and yes, it is in order)
But never worked.
So any suggestions or explain with more detail?
Because I have no idea about these computer stuffs.

Before reading the below paragraph NOTE: I used the windows 7 upgrade advisor to tell me if there are any compatibility problems and nothing came in.

I recently installed Windows 7 on my Acer Aspire 6530 and it worked great, no problems at all! I thought it was amazing due to microsoft's previous attempts. Anyway in the excitment I attempt to upgrade my other Acer Aspire 7720 which also is a laptop, and I boot it while on the computer so I can save my files, and then it booted with a black screen with a flashing white dash, so I attempted to install Windows 7 by simply booting it with a CD, after all of that, it has the same result.

Obviously all my files are gone, but I was smart enough to make a back-up which it is now on, but what I want to know is there is anyway to fix it so I CAN use Windows 7, there shouldn't be any problems upgrading my system, what has gone wrong?

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 and whenever I boot up the computer, either from sleep mode of from when it's off, I get a flashing white screen. The screen has vertical zig-zag lines on it that are spaced out and it just keeps flashing. I have to turn my computer on and off enough times for it to finally boot up properly.
I've had the computer for a little over a year it has an Intel graphics card. I tried to restore to an older system image, but I have no system images on my computer. Would resetting the computer help? If so, how do I preserve Microsoft Office on my computer?
This is a really frustrating and time consuming issue, and Dell has really *** customer support, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Hi! Sorry for opening a new thread but this is just so serious and I am so stressed out about it that I didn't have the patience to search if the thread is already open.
I have a black screen and white blinking dash problem. The thing is, I can't even type f2 or f4, or anything whatsoever. It is not reacting at all to the keyboard. It's the second time this is happening in 2 days, every time I turn it off (properly) and try to turn it on, it does that. After a lot of hopeless trying to turn it on or make f2 or f4 work, it just starts working again normally... And now I finally turned it on after I spent the whole morning trying and I'm working on saving all my files, but now I'm scared to turn it off. What do I do?? What is wrong with my computer?

Hey guys, here I am again with another failure.
Today morning I woke up to my windows refusing to boot. It just does the white dash blinking in the top left corner (it jumps down a bit at first, then just keeps blinking endlessly). I'm aware that this can be a result of a poor shutdown or a crash or modified system files or program installation, or whatever. The thing is last night I was using the computer fine and I didn't install anything, modify anything, and it shut down correctly (as far as I know - after I clicked shut down I shut off the monitors and went somewhere else, and just when I came back it turned off so I assume it was fine).

I've tried a number of things already. First, I'm booting from an Ubuntu CD right now and my files are all fine and intact on the C:\ drive. Second, I tried running my Windows 7 CD to go into the recovery system and tried a bunch of things.

The recovery thing doesn't detect my operating system, first of all, but I've had this issue before. I remember that I got it to work somehow, but I don't remember how. I think it might have been a disc that I burned with a modification that allowed it to detect the system (I used some tutorials over at sevenforums.com, can't remember which ones now though). I'll look for the CD, I might have it somewhere.
EDIT: I found what I presume is the CD but it doesn't even want to boot. I'll try looking for whatever I found before and make another one, I guess. But if I could get it to det... Read more

A:Help - Windows won't boot, white dash blinking endlessly.

From what you have written, this should be impossible but I suggest you to press F8 right before booting into windows, and select 'Use last known good config'.
This issue sound really hopeless, but if you could manage to boot into any windows which is on another partition (if you have any), you could rebuild the MBR manually (master boot record) which stores the OS information.
Do you have another disk/partition?
If yes, the best would be to install W7 on it (takes 20mins) do the above things (I will explain it further if you have another partition) and then boot back into your original OS and would be able to delete the 'blank' windows 7 installation files from the orher partition.

This recently started happening. Sometimes when I boot my computer, it displays a white screen with colorful pixels scattered across the screen. It starts by constantly flashing from the white screen to black. Eventually, it stops at the white screen. I can still see my mouse pointer though and move it around. It's happened three times now and it only happens every few boots. I have to hit the reset button on my case to get out of it. Any idea? Thanks.
Here's a picture of the white screen: http://i.imgur.com/mPLw38I.jpg
OS: Windows 10
CPU: AMD FX 8320
I have also attached the event error log.
EDIT: I think the problem has to do with the constant spamming of this in the logs:
"Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
So GPU drivers or GPU failure? :\
By the way, this only happens on SOME OS BOOTS. Games/video run fine without crashing if the OS boots up properly.

Hello, I am trying to install Windows XP (because Windows 7 is damn slow) Corporate Edition 64-bit but after the Copying Windows Files setup portion, the setup wants to restart my computer, but after the motherboard logo, I just get the blacnk screen with white dash - if CD is inserted I get "Press any key to boot from CD....." and a white dash at the end with nothing happening. I've searched for a solution everywhere, but I didn't find my case. I have installed XP atleas 20 times on this computer, and I've never had such problem before. I thought it could be because of the 64-bit version, but after trying to install the 32-bit version I have got the same issue, which has never happened before. Windows 7 installs perfectly. I have: removed the CD from the drive; Updated the BIOS to the last version; Tried running in safe mode and nothing helped. I hope there's somebody out there to help me because I really want XP.

A:Black screen with white dash after first portion of Windows Setup?

Seems that Windows XP installation is not detecting or having problems with your SATA2 drive.

Try going to BIOS and Switching the SATA2 drive out of RAID mode if possible see if that helps.

Windows Xp has issues with SATA2 Drives.

Or you may need to slipstream your copy of Xp with sp2 or 3 if your cd is only SP1 for it to recognize and work with SATA drives. Also with SATA drives I believe Windows XP only recognizes 128GB 137GB SATA drives.

I've done a search for this but it's kind of a hard one to put in to keywords without getting tonnes of results with radically different problems. I bought a new computer a few months ago and bought Vista Ultimate OEM but I still needed XP for work so I just put my old XP harddrive in, played around with installing some drivers and everything worked swell. I had some free time on the weekend though and decided I may as well install Vista now. I chucked the DVD in and booted from it, then began the installation. I've got 3 hard drives, one of them is XP, one is for the bulk of my files and finally one that I cleared everything off of, ready to be formatted and have Vista put on. The installation seems to have gone fine, it unpacked all the files and installed everything. It rebooted, assumedly at the end (I didn't hang around to watch it install for half an hour) and booted in to XP. Cool, so I rebooted again, went to the boot menu and selected the Vista hard drive and then nothing happens. I get a black screen with a white blinking "_" cursor. I went back in to XP and looked on the Vista harddrive and it appeared to have the entire file structure on it. So is there any advice you can give? I'm not quite sure what else to try other than do a completely fresh install.

I am a new member. Here is my first XP issue. I have been running XP Pro now for a year with no issues. This week I decide to purchase and install a new hot game Half-Life 2. I seemed to have no problems installing the game (all 5 CDs worth). I shut down my PC. The next day when I turned my PC on I got about 30 seconds of blank screen followed by a white progress bar accross the lower portion of my screen.

My PC is a Dell Inspiron 5150. It takes about 120 seconds before the
progress bar moves across from left to right then windows starts OK.

I decided to reinstall windows XP pro yesterday as an update. This done
I rebooted but the problem is still there.

Prior to this problem, my PC booted completely in about 15 or 20 seconds.

My Windows XP machine has just given me a blank white screen!! It happened while browsing the net and I can do nothing now. The screen is totally blank and there is no response to any keystroke or mouse click. I switch off and restart: the Windows Welcome screen appears plus the fanfare; then instead of booting properly, it waits a bit then all goes white again. The hourglass is flicking on and off showing that some booting-up is perhaps going on but I cannot even get a response from Ctrl-Alt-Del.

When I press the button to switch off, my desktop briefly appears (in full colour, just as it should be) followed by the message that I'm logging off and Windows is shutting down, i.e. it doesn't seem as though the machine is totally dead, just diverted to this blank white screen. Unfortunately, after a virus infection some time back, this machine will not start in safe mode so I am really stuck. Can anyone please help me here? It really is vital.

A:Solved: Just got a blank white screen !

Well thanks folks - another nil response, not the first time either. My problems must be a bit naff so I will not be posting here again.
In the off chance that anyone is remotely interested, my blank white screen problem has healed itself. After a day's worth of switching on and switching off again, I suddenly got a message that a program was failing to respond and did I want to close it now? It was a Real Player update, never requested or agreed to, that was not responding and when I closed it, bingo, I had control of my machine again and it proceeded to give me my desktop and everything.
Just so as you know. I won't trouble you again. Adios.

Hello Guys,

I am having a few problems with the Samsung Magician program since replacing my video card and just wondered if any one else has had these problems.

Firstly if the Samsung Magician SSD program is running in the system try and I start Steam then Bioshock Infinite the game will open for about 0.5-1 second then minimise itself to the task bar, if I click it in the taskbar it will go full screen for about 0.5-1 second again then minimise itself straight away and so on. If I shut down the Magician program I can maximise the window full screen and it will play Bioshock normal.
Also another problem has developed since I have fitted a new video card and I'm not sure if the problem is the video card or the Samsung Magician software, When I open the Magician program my monitor screen will go blank for about 1-2 seconds then return to the normal desktop, this will also happen when the ?refresh drive information? button is pressed at the bottom of the Magician window. The blank flash will also occasionally happen when I play a small video recorded from my camera or phone. I don't get any problems when playing Bioshock or Metro Last light with the settings set high so I don't think it is a hardware problem with the video card or PSU.

I didn't have any of these issues with my old video card (Gigabyte 9800GTX (GV-NX98X512H-B)512 MB)

I am running Windows 8 Pro 64 bit with all updates applied, my video card is a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 2GB PCI-Express 3.0 HDMI OC running ... Read more

Okay here is what is happening, I just cleaned up a PC that I own Windows ME OS, more or less a Dell Machine, with a couple of bits added.

Anyway after I was finished cleaning it up I brought it up to the house. It started up fine, Detected everything (from what I can see) but then as soon as it starts to go to the Desktop the Monitor goes blank and all the lights on the Monitor are flashing. I could not figure out what the problem is so I re-started and booted in Safe Mode which worked, I then went to look for the Drivers but it did not detect the Monitor or have drivers available for it (in Safe Mode - is this normal?), I think it is a case that some of the Drivers have been deleted.

So my questions are....

- Is it missing Drivers?
- If so where can I get them?
- Any other Ideas?

A:Start up Problem - Monitor Lights all flashing - blank screen

Good Evening Alan, I understand you can successfully boot into safe mode.
Understand that in safe mode a basic driver is used to allow video display.

Your symptom is similar to an out of range kind of problem as though you might be using an old monitor where sometime previously you may have had a more modern one and have increased the video settings which is unsuitable for the current one.

Whilst in Safe Mode, go to the control panel > Display > Settings and knock the screen size and colour settings back to say, the lowest available.

See if that allows windows to normally boot, you can increase the settings later if possible.

Try booting up and hitting the F8 key. Then choose the Last Known Good Config option and see what that does for you.

My laptop is a IBM Thinkpad T40, which i had to rebuild using parts from another T40
It has a 1.5 GHz Processor Intel, Centrino Mobile
512MB of RAM
and Windows XP Pro Completely updated
Upon a rexent start up, after turning it off last night normally, it ceased functioning.
Now after the IBM Thinkpad start screen it merely displays a flashing white dash in the upper left corner. I have some files on there that hadn't been backed up. (I back up every Friday it died on a Thursday of all the rotten luck.) Suggestions about what i can do to get it working again?

A:Flashing Dash

Take the drive out, mount it in an external enclosure, attach it to a working computer by USB cord and copy out files that you can access. After that run hard drive diagnostic utilities like hitach drive fitness test and check to make sure it is completely fine before reinstalling in the original computer. You can try booting into safe mode, or last known good configuration or you can try a repair install of the OS. If nothing else works, format and reinstall the OS from scratch.

Hi I have a lenovo g500 laptop running windows 10. It has recently started giving me a white flashing screen with bits of grey and vertical lines. It stays on and does not flicker.
I have to turn off the laptop to get the screen back to normal. Moving the screen back and forth doesn't influence it in anyway and all display drivers are up to date.
I have ran a hardware scan (with the lenovo solution center) on the graphics chip and it passed.
The graphics chip is an intel hd 4000.
What could be causing such an issue?

Welcome elfinwood.

Just to clarify... It sounds as if you have been playing Second Life with your computer for a while, which has always worked fine, until recently, where you have this flashing screen problem? When does this problem occur? Is it after playing the game for a while or as soon as you start the game? Or does it start as soon as your turn on the computer?

If it is when you start the game, does it do it when you start other games (games that require good use of the graphics card/system)?

> When was the last time you updated your drivers?
> Have you changed anything before this started to occur, such as installing new updates?

when i first turned on my computer i got a blue screen message saying that BIOS is corrupted and now is updating. Then the computer restarts and a flashing dash come up on a black screen and nothing else happens.

Whenever I restarts the computer the same process happens.

Anyone can suggest any fixes or causes???

A:BIOS corrupted + Flashing dash

Maybe clearing the BIOS could help. Look at the motherboard menu, there should be a jumper which you can set to clear the BIOS.

If you can still enter the BIOS by pressing a certain key on startup, then you can choose Load BIOS defaults or some similar setting.

My computer will not fully start up because it always gets stuck on a flashing white line on the top left corner. I have been having issues with my video card recently (ati radeon 4850) where a red light will go on and my monitor will go black therefore making me have to hard reboot my computer. I do not know what this red light means so if someone could help me that we would be awesome as well. This line I was stuck on happened after one of the red light issues so I hard rebooted and that's where I'm stuck now. I am trying to reformat now and it is telling me that no device drivers were found and make sure the installation media contains the right drivers, which makes no sense to me because that has never happened to me, please help.

A:Flashing white line, computer will not boot.

Never mind, this post fixed it. PC won't boot; blinking white light in top left
I put those commands in prompt and it worked. But could someone still help me with this red blinking light I'm still having on my video card.

Hi, I've been having this problem. When I start my computer, the whole screen is white for awhile, then it turns black. There is no windows startup logo or my computer brand logo. Then my screen starts flashing and the power button on my monitor blinks and the monitor makes TOK sounds every 2 seconds and then the screen flashes and starts doing that over and over until it decides to make the whole screen white and stay like that. Here's what it looks like:
I tried manually restarting my computer by holding the power button and after a few tries, sometimes, if I'm lucky, it will let me login and then everything is fine.
Today, I went through this process and today I tried turning off the monitor when the screen was white. It restarted and black flashing but made the screen turn white faster. I just kept trying, turning the monitor off and on again because I didn't know what to do. Then I was so lucky, the login page for windows came up and I was able to login; now everything is normal. I can go online and everything without any problems until I shut down my computer and start it up again. Then it's back to square one.
Can anyone help me fix this problem? Should I buy a new monitor? I've had this one for a few years, but my desktop is new; It's one year old in 3 days. (April. 4)
Thanks in advance!

Hello Nicole and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you've already done a reinstall of Windows 7 and the problem has returned, I think I'd start looking at hardware issues. Perhaps a hard drive, RAM, motherboard, etc that's failing. One of the Forum experts has prepared a couple of troubleshooting guides that might help isolate the problem. I might start with the Memtest86 and HD Diagnostics test outlined in Steps 8 and 9, first tutorial.
