Unable To Stop Auto Runsand Unable To Control The Firewall

Q: Unable To Stop Auto Runsand Unable To Control The Firewall

for sometime now adware has taken control of my firewall and I have tried different firewalls with the same problems, have tried zone alarm suite, window live one care and I now have trendmicro 2007 suite installed. Something takes contol of the firewall and opens ports that i'm not able to close. To try and solve this problem I have done reformats and reinstalls of my operating system but the problem remains. I have tried adware, spybolt dearch and destroy, superspyware, avg antispyware and rootkit removers. Before posting this I tried adware again but I get a system error 1810 when I try to use it. I have also had a problem with spybot. When I installed it with trend micro my computer started to run really slow and I understand there is some problem with running the two together. I have also spent hours with trend online tecs and hp but they have not been of any help. I have a hp computer with windows xp home edition and I have Installed all microsoft updates. I can only hope there is someone who can help with these problems. Preferred Solution: Unable To Stop Auto Runsand Unable To Control The Firewall

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello all,

Today I found out that I can't use MS Firewall through control panel. It seems that this service is not working anymore.
Everytime I click on it, it does that sound as if is going to open the Firewall properties but nothing happens. I checked the service (through services.msc command) and it says the firewall is on and it starts automatically.
Also tried the windows Fix It but it remains the same.

If I try to start Firewall with advanced security its gives me this failed to load snap-in error: Ox6D9

Any ideas? Thank you.

Well I got a big problem.

A couple days ago I noticed network connectivity issues. Random connection drops, overall bad connection, etc. I recently had some really bad malware and I removed it, so I suspected leftover malware from the start. I went to check Windows Update to see if I missed a security update, and it wasn't even on my computer. Something removed the service completely off my computer, so I found a .reg to fix it. I then started Windows Update and found that I had 30 updates missing and updated all of them successfully.

I then decided to see what was going on with my Windows Firewall, only to find that it was also removed. Wasn't in my services or anything. So I downloaded the .reg to fix that, tried to activate the service, only to run into another roadblock that I still haven't been able to fix, an error stating

"The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs".

Ok. So I checked my services again and I believe that some more were completely missing(Base Filtering Engine, NSI proxy Service). So to try and remedy this, I attempted an sfc /scannow in elevated cmd prompt.

Then another brick wall. I get to 59% and then I get this message

"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

Trustedinstaller service is turned on, so I have no idea why I'm getting this message. But... Read more

The first problem that I was having occurred when I was trying to transfer a large amount of files from my main OS drive (Seagate 400GB SATA) to a backup drive (Maxtor 300GB PATA). The transfer would start fine, and then about 1-5 minutes into the transfer the computer would restart. I thought it was a power supply problem, so I switched the power supply with a known good 500w power supply with the same problem. My next thought was that it was a hard drive problem so i reformatted and tried to reinstall Windows XP without success. During the install the system would either freeze or restart. Tried on 3 hard drives with the same result. So now I am stuck, because I can't even install XP.

I had a temperature monitor on my CPU and it never went much about 30c, so I don't think it is a heat problem that is causing the restarts. I am going to test my RAM one stick at a time tonight to test if that could be causing the problem. Is there anything else that you can suggest I try? Below are my system specs. Thanks.

-MB = Biostar TForce 6100-939
-CPU = AMD 64 3200+
-RAM = Kingston 2x512 184-pin DDR 400 3200
-Using onboard video

A:Auto Restarting and Unable to reinstall XP

Disable auto restarts under XP (assuming it is still working).

Control Panel - System - Advanced - Startup and recovery/settings - uncheck "automatically restart" - OK.

If it still restarts it could be hardware related.

My windows 7 has been unable to completely start up... It has ran the 'Windows Auto-Repair' and i have run the repair console as well... Now this machine will run windows repair and say "windows is unable to auto repair." Thats all i know... I have unplugged all extra hardware... have ran an antivirus scan (before the repair consoles). I just need to know any tips/tricks to make this computer skip the repair part and load windows... I have the W7 disk, but it wont 'boot from disk' even when I select the boot menu option and choose my CD Rom Drive.

If this is useless/not enough information please ask me what you need and I will deliver!

A:Windows 7 Unable to auto Repair...

Upon power on tap the F8 key until you get the Windows boot menu, and see if you can do anything from there.

Assuming that the "W7 disk" is a Windows 7 installation DVD you will not be able to boot it with a CD drive--you need a DVD drive.

Hey everyone, this is a Windows Vista Home Premium. Recently, I obtained a legal version of Microsoft Office 2007 ; however, I'm unable to automatically open .ppt (PowerPoint files). For example, when I download a Word document on Firefox, I have the option Open With Microsoft Word, but when I download a PowerPoint file, I have the option Open With Browse instead. When I try and select a program from "a list of installed programs", PowerPoint is not on the list and I'm not sure which file to choose when I am given the option of browsing through my hard drive. Thanks for your time!

A:Unable To Auto Open Files

Is Powerpoint listed on the Start...All Programs...Microsoft Office menu? If not, I'd suggest inserting your Office 2007 CD and modifying the installation to include it.

If it is there, then try and open something with it - does it work?

Since the option to open with Powerpoint doesn't seem to be available - it's likely that something is damaged within the installation. I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2007 to try and fix it.

Hardware specs:
Asus W3J Notebook
Intel Mobil 945PM Express chipset
Intel Core 2 Duo T2400

After booting and using the machine for a while, Windows 7 will not turn on the cpu fan as the processor starts heating up - and after a while it will hit critical temperature and shut down. If I reboot or go into sleep mode however, they will be turned on. I assume this is done directly by the BIOS as Windows 7 now will not slow down my cpu fan once my processor starts cooling. I did not have this problem in XP, which was what I used prior to a fresh install of W7.

So in effect, Windows 7 isn't able to control my cpu fan at all - and the temporary workaround is going in and out of sleep mode when my cpu temperature hits around 60 degrees celsius in order to get a decent speed/noise ratio on my fan.

Steps taken to try to fix this
* Updating the chipset drivers
* Installing ACPI drivers from Asus
* Cleaning the CPU fan and blowing out dust
* Installing various Asus performance tools and other misc. utitilites - none of them are able to do anything but get a reading
* Booting into Ubuntu from an USB stick, to check if it could be a BIOS problem. Ubuntu is able to control my fan just fine.

I am completely at a loss as to which step to take next. Any help or point in the right directory will be greatly appreciated

I don't know if I am in the proper area of the forum for my problem or not. I am such a novice I don't even know if I can explain the problem. But here goes.........while reading a webpage (doesn't matter which site) the scroll bar will automatically return to the top of the page and I am unable to control it. It also has happened with the horizontal scroll bar. It is almost as if my computer is possessed. The only way I can resolve the issue is to reboot my system. After the reboot, everything is back to normal.

I have a brand new Lenovo T61 with XP Professional, lots of memory as I have yet to transfer my files from old computer. This is not a frequent problem but it is very annoying, and I know it should not be happening. I have run a virus scan, and my system seems to be secure.

Sorry if this is too incoherent, and thanks for any help you can provide.

I have always disabled Auto Insert Notification as i dont like the idea of an inserted Data CD launching on its own. I am running W2k Pro and have the correct TweakUi with up until now allowed me to block Data CDs and allow Music CDs from automatically starting unless i authorized it-guess i am a control freak! 2 days ago i got a deal on a Creative Audigy Platium Sound Card and installed it with all bundled software. During this same time period i also installed the latest FPS game Delta Force Task Force Dagger. I noticed yesterday that now when ever i insert a data cd, it starts on its own. Now every time i go to TweakUi, the box is rechecked to auto play data cds. I uncheck it, hit apply, restart and it is checked again. I manually changed it in the regestry to 0 instead of 1 which disabled it. Rebootd and it was back like a bad dream. I dont know if it is the Creative Sound Card software forcing AIN to be enabled each time or if it is DFTFD. Curious if there is some way to lock the setting in the regestry or if someone has some idea as to what is on the verge of driving me crazy(no really as i can live with it, but would like to know the reason even if i can do nothing about it). Thanks for any ideas or moral support!

I am running Windows XP SP3 and can not disable a Firewall running on my PC.

I have disabled Windows Firewall but when I open Security Center it still says a Firewall is on. I uninstalled my Virus protection program (Norton Anti-virus) and disabled Windows Firewall (using the Control Panel and services.msc and msconfig) but to no avail Security Center still says a Firewall is running. I know of no other Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, or Firewall programs being installed or running on my PC.

Any suggestions on how to determine what Firewall is running or how to disable?

Whatever is running is preventing me to access files on PC on a wireless network (using a D-LINK DSM-520).

Thanks in advance. I am at a loss.

Thanks to you guys I was able to remove the trojan from my pc...and then I got to checking on some settings. For some reason my firewall is turned off and I can't turn it back on. The following message is in my security center:

The Security Center is currently unavailable because the "Security Center" service has not started or was stopped. Please close this window, restart the computer (or start the "Security Center" service), and then open the Security Center again.

If I click on the Firewall icon anyway the message at the top says: For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy.

I have no idea where to set those or why or how they got changed. From what I could find on Microsoft site (trying to read that is ridiculous) it says the following:

You install Windows XP SP2 on a client computer that is located in a Microsoft Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2003-based network.
• You have joined a client computer that is running Windows XP SP2 to a Windows SBS 2003-based network

What does all this mean and how can I turn my firewall back on?

Hi. My Acer XP computer is so infected that the firewall has turned itself off, and refuses to let me enable it again from the firewall selection in the Control Panel. I've disabled network interfaces for now, and am running GMER, but will it help? Will it help me to enable the network to try to upload DDS and the Attach.txt too? These latter 2 I have, but the firewall turned itself off after I gathered them, and I fear I am more infected than before.

Any advice on best way to proceed very much appreciated, thanks tons. (This is typed from another computer, a mac, on my home network.)

Edit- it occurs to me I could do a restore (of the registry? the restore function) from an earlier date. I'll do that next after gmer completes- if it completes, it has crashed the machine a couple of times. Maybe then I'll get my firewall back and can bring you the logs you need. Thanks.

Hello,Now that you have posted a log here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/312013/would-like-help-with-a-clear-infection/ you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a MRT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Need help here, I am unable to turn on the windows firewall. I have checked the services, the status of the Base filtering engine is Started and automatic, Windows firewall shows Disabled.

A:Unable to switch on firewall.

One of the first things a virus will do is disable as much  security as possible.  Isolate the machine, pull the ethernet cable or turn off the WIFI router and boot into the safe mode.  Run any and all anti-virus programs you have from the safe mode, multiple passes may be needed to insure it's clean before booting into normal mode (still without the network) and checking again.  Once all is clean again, connection to the nretwork can be re-established and an online virus check needs to happen (malwarebytes for example).  Should things still be acting funny, boot back into safe mode and run the online checkers again.

Hey guys, so far no problems at all except one and I'm loving the new OS.

However - when I try to install the Catalyst Control Center with the express option, it seems to go through the motion and then says it installed it, but the folders are empty and it's not there. If I try to use the custom option it tells me "failed to find any installable components!", but the drivers and the card are both working just fine. I was just wondering if anyone else had this issue or knows a way around the downscaling without installing the control center. Those black borders are really annoying, I think it might be some sort of factory default set to -15% or so. Any information that might help solve this would be appreciated.

But theres no empty slot for the password (I do know the password). There are two buttons below one saying 'No' and 'Yes'. The 'Yes' button however is great (unclickable).

Hopefully you guys have a solution for this. Thanks in advance for your help :D

Hi all,
I am running Windows Xp pro SP2 and after installing sp2 i lost the ability to install any active x control in IE.
For example when I go to windows update I get the message that there is a newer version available and then when i get the information bar help message.
But there is no information bar to right click and install the active x control.
it happens the same in safe mode with N/W.
added the microsoft, windows update site in security sites and then reset the security settings for all the zones to low and even set it to custom and enable the active x to be installed.
I have Run a scan with adawre and MS antispyware and an online virus scan with Trend micro and it comes up clean and I run Norton and it says clean as well.
I have performed a repair installation and it worked fine but then again i did not have sp2 and so in did windows update and then reisntalled sp2 and i am nowhere.

BTW the hosts files had a lot of entries related to kazza and ad aware and so i deleted all the lines and made the localhost as the only entry but no go.

If any one had come across this kind of issue let me know because at this point i have no other but to format and reinstall windows.
with regards

Just a few random thoughts that might help. Not much info to go on.

- Did you recently install something (new program, updates, etc) that caused CP/taskbar issues? Uninstall.
- Did you have recent malware problems? Run full scans with your AV and free Malwarebytes.
- Have you tried System Restore to a date/time prior to issues?
- Have you checked for damaged or corrupt system files? Use option two this tutorial from elevated command prompt. If problems are found run scan 3 times rebooting after each scan.

It would help if you filled in your system specs (top menu bar any forum page > User CP > Edit System Spec left column.) Also helpful to know how long this problem has been going on and how you first noticed it (did it happen while you were on the computer doing something or did you shut down the machine and there it was the next time you powered back up?) Please post back if anything above helped or not.

I tried all means of opening the UAC slider menu (from Control Panel/User Accounts/change UAC settings, using cmd.exe, etc) but it never shows up. Verified file integrity, everything is fine. Any suggestions? Thanks

A:Unable to open UAC control dialog

Hello Antares,

If you like for now, you should be able to use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to change your UAC settings.
User Account Control (UAC) - Change Settings in Windows 8
To try and fix this, you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before this started. You'll of course need to change your UAC settings back to what you wanted afterwards.

Hope this helps for now.

Thanks for any help.

A:Running Admin but still unable to get auto update to turn on

Your first screenshot shows that you are attempting to open a file with an extension of crdownload

That file extension is usually associated with Google's Chrome browser. It is a temporary file extension given to a file during the download. Once the download completes, there are a few more things that might occur before the original file extension is assigned to the file.

One of those things is:
Security related Chrome extensions (apps) might need to complete their checking of the file.

Another thing is:
Antivirus apps (in this case, Kaspersky) might might need to scan the file.
I downloaded Kaspersky from here:
Download Kaspersky Anti-Virus - FileHippo.com
During install, it downloaded another 168MB of stuff.
After the install, it downloaded lots more files. Wow!

I downloaded Chrome 31.0.1650.63 from here:
Download Google Chrome 31.0.1650.63 - FileHippo.com

After restarting the Virtual Machine that I'm playing in, I used Chrome to download the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) from here: Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [November 2013] from Official Microsoft Download Center

Using Process Monitor, I did not see Kaspersky do anything with the file during or after the download. Perhaps I just missed Kaspersky's actions.

My temp file correctly renamed from
Windows6.1-KB947821-v31-x64.crdownload to
Windows6.1-KB947821-v31-x64.msu after the download completed.

Okay, so I've been running Vista on my machine since last summer and just recently encountered a very annoying thing. I always just leave my computer on for weeks at a time, so when I wake up and find that it has rebooted, I am very annoyed. I checked the auto update page and it is set to install updates automatically at 3AM without prompting or anything. This causes the machine to download updates while I am asleep, install them and reboot the system, causing me to lose work in programs I have open.

To make matters worse, I can't change any of the options. It says that "Some settings are managed by your system administrator." What does that mean? I am the only user, I have an admin account and have disabled UAC...why can't I change it? This is very annoying as it won't even tell me when it has updates - just reboots!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Vista Auto Update options unable to be changed

oh, one more thing - I am at a college...I am only plugged in to their network and registered with the system. I am not on the domain or anything, so they can't push policies like that to me, can they?

Hi all, my name is Greg, several years back I had a problem and it was cleared up here(thanks again) and now I am having problems again.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with XP home sp3. I started having problems when it started rebooting continuosly even prior to logging in. I was able to boot into safe mode but w/o networking (all my devices in the device manager are gone(as in there is nothing there) so also all my networking connections are missing as well)).
I ran the latest Dr. webb with no results and also ran malware bytes numerous times and it keeps finding problems so I fix them, reboot and run again.
I have tried starting windows to last known good startup and that does nothing but reboot and while in safe mode I am unable to revert to an earlier time as it says unavailable.
I tried running windows recovery console but it failed and is no longer an option as it is missing now.
I am running chkdsk now

A:Unable to boot(auto reboot)except in safe mode

Ok chkdsk came back clear rebooted automatically the rebooted into blue screen saying unmountable_boot_volume followed by a string of nubers OXOOOOOOED(OX8B953108, OXCOOOOOO6, OXOOOOOOOO, OXOOOOOOOO
Also each attempt to reboot in safe mode results in a blue screen saying the same thing with a diffferent string of numbers and letters.
I did get into the bios and run the scans there and they all came back clean.
