My videos' colors turned gray

Q: My videos' colors turned gray

This only started about a few days ago.

Right now, all my videos (both the ones I downloaded before and the ones I acquired just now) are grayish-colored. You can still see a bit of the original colors, but that's as far as it goes.

The problem happens to both .mkv files and .mp4 files:

(I picked actual movies so that you can go and compare them to images of the movies if you want to confirm them).

However, I haven't tested any other video formats.

I use MPC-HC mainly:

but the problem extends to the default Windows 10 players:

However, these same videos are perfectly fine if I transfer them to another computer.

Interestingly enough, the problem extends to Youtube as well, but NOT ALL videos.

This one is fine:

This one isn't:

(As you can see, the colors in the thumbnail are different from what the video player's displaying).

The problematic Whose Line? video here flickers with its original colors at the start, but it immediately switches to these grayed-out colors.

The problem seems to be specific to each Youtube video, meaning videos which have the problem keep having the problem no matter how many times I refresh and vice versa.

Also notable, the amount of Youtube videos with this problem is significantly smaller than those without. It took me about fifteen videos to find this problematic video, and, with my experience over the past half-week, this 15:1 ratio seems about just right.

Again, this started only a few days ago. I thought it would go away, but it doesn't seem to be doing so.

Also, this info may or may not help, but the problem exists on both my laptop screen and the TV screen I connect to with an HDMI cable.

I don't think this issue is very urgent, but I would greatly appreciate if anyone could go out of their way to help me with this. Thank you very much.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

One last thing. I noticed the problem in other online video sites too, but I'm not sure if I can share pictures of it here for reasons. (They're pornsites).

Hi,

Not sure if this is a software or hardware issue but my monitor recently began showing light gray lines across the screen. At the same time, the colors are all slightly off.

Around the same time, my antivirus software (Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007) reported a bad website and said it had to revert to the last known good version of itself. Here is my problem. I opened up my Photo Shop CS 8.0. I tried to color in a picture, but when I did, the colors are showing as like a gray scale. They are showing up normal in the color chart where you click a color. But when you try to brush it, they show up gray scale. I opened up Microsoft Paint and it did the same thing. I dont know what I did to change any of this. And I dont know how to change it back.

A:All colors in paint programs showing up gray scale??

sugabeatz,

Welcome to TSG

Is it doing this with all images or just one your wanting to work on?
Guess it is because of the color format. Open the image a PS and then change the image format to high color.
If that is not it then it may be the mode. Go up to image, mode and see what is checked. I think the default is RGB Color so put a check by it if it's not checked.

When I open a bmp or jpeg in Paint and try to add colors (text or additions to the picture) on top of it, the only color I get is gray, no matter what color I select. If I pick pink, it's gray.. pick blue, it's gray, etc. I've tried it with maybe 10 different bmps/jpegs. When I open Paint and just paint a colored line, the color comes out fine. I've always been able to layer colors on top of bmps and jpegs, have done this tons of times before. What could be making every color come out as gray?

Hello, my name is Alexander. I am new here.

I just decided to turn on my laptop to play Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight. First I pressed the power button to turn on the laptop and it blinked, the battery light also blinked. As I remember the battery was charged, so I decided to turn it on again. After pressing the button, the COMPAQ boot screen appeared but suddenly all the screen gone gray for some unknown reason. I pressed and held the power button for 10 seconds but nothing happened. Then I removed the battery but the laptop didn't turned off. Now, I leaved the laptop for 3 hours and it didn't shut down.

Last night it worked fine. I was playing Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 and listening to some Guns 'n' Roses songs.

Specs (Sorry, I forgot the laptop model):
RAM: 2GB.
Graphics card: Mobile Intel 4 Series Chipset.
Processor: 2GHz.
HD: 137GB.
OS: Windows Vista Home Basic.

A:COMPAQ Presario screen turned gray and I can't turn it off.

Hold the power button for 15 seconds or until the computer shuts off. Let it set for a few minutes. Put the battery in and make sure you are using the power adapter too. Start the computer. If it won't boot normally press the F8 key repeatedly until you can boot into Safe Mode.

All you have to do is click start then click run. Type in services.msc and a services window should pop up. Scroll all the way down to Themes, then right click and hit start. If the color does not change automatically then go to your desktop right click and scroll down to properties. From there you should be able to edit your themes/colors.

I turned on my PlayStation 3 about an hour ago and got an onscreen notification that it had not been shut down properly the time before. While I've gotten this message many times in the past, the problem has always been solved within a matter of minutes. Unfortunately, this time is different. I don't recall what I did after getting this message, but, for whatever reason, the screen has turned dark gray -- not totally black, but a very dark gray -- and it's been that way for more than 30 minutes. I know that in the past whenever I've gotten the message that my PS3 has not been turned off properly the previous time, the message further states that the unit will restart and fix any formatting errors, which may take 2 to 3 hours (or words to that effect). I'm wondering if the continuously gray screen I now have is an indication that any errors are being fixed and that it may take as long as 2 or 3 hours.

For what it's worth, I never used the PS3 to play games -- only to look at JPEG discs or DVD's/Blu-Rays. I was attempting to watch a JPEG disc when this problem occurred. Next, I inserted a movie, but it also wouldn't play. The screen stayed dark gray.

On the front of the unit I see the blue and green lights are lit.

I don't know if there might be a simple fix or if, on the other hand, the problem could be quite serious. Perhaps the errors are currently being fixed and the machine will resume normal operation shortly. In the meant... Read more

A:Solved: PlayStation 3 shutdown problem -- screen has turned dark gray

I'm happy to report that my problem has been solved.

After being gone for several hours I returned home and found that the screen was still dark gray, at which point I unplugged the PS3, then plugged it back in a few minutes later. Immediately I got the following onscreen message:

The file system on the system is corrupted and will be restored. Press the PlayStation button to use the controller.

I then followed instructions and my system was soon up and running once again.

I'm not sure how to explain this issue. It's relatively new.

When I turn on my computer, the colors would be over saturated at the login screen but a few seconds later, it'll be back to normal.

Does anyone know the cause of this or how to fix it if it's fixable?

I should add that I had uninstalled the display adapter and reinstalled it because I was trying to fix a different issue and on another forum, that was recommended. It's not a big issue for me since it lasts at most 2 seconds on the login screen but I rather my computer not have any issues at all...

Boy I hate AOL. But I'm stuck with the user name since AOL began (use it for work, etc.) and I now do everything through Firefox (thanks Tech Guys). I do have AVG Virus, Adware, and Spyware on both browsers. OK. On AOL my Spybot icon (on the bottom, whatever that bar is called) has developed what looks like a lock on the blue and white box. I could uninstall and reinstall Spybot, but isn't that avoiding the problem causing the weird icon? When I place the curser over the icon it says 56271 processes blacklisted. Spybot seems to be working well. I immunized and did everything and found no processes blacklisted after cleaning it all up. The only problem I know of is that I might have two Spybot programs downloaded, although one looks like it is only part of the 2nd software. This is really bizarre. I went to Google and found nothing on the icon. I did find how to clean up Spybot, I ran it and it seemed to be completely clean. No one knows what that icon means. Any help is appreciated, as usual.

Good morning everyone,

This morning I turned on my computer and now my pop out menus for my task bar are a dark green with a picture of a thumb tack. I did not install any new hardware.

The thumb tack is not functional.
This happened on all my user accounts.
Everything else in Windows is normal.

The closest thing that I found to change that color is: I switch to High Contrast Theme and then click on Color. The Selected Text directly affects the color of the right click pop up on my task bar.

Yesterday about half of the images I encounter online load incorrectly. Bars of neon colors completely distort the images. I am having the same problem with streaming video. Bright pink, yellow, and green bars ruin the picture. It is the same in all browsers.
Also webpages are loading incorrectly with some sort of encoding error. All sites, including Google and bleepingcomputer occasionally load with lines of code and missing portions of the page. Often times links will not do anything when clicked.
I'm assuming the two problems are connected because they appeared at the same time. I'm not sure if it is a graphics card issue or an internet issue. Any help is appreciated.

Can't be sure which audio and video codecs you have installed, but I would think if you go to this site; http://www.mediacodec.org/ and download this codec pack, you probably won't have any trouble with video playback, using VLC, KM & WM players. Hope that does the trick.

Ok so just recently, I got a new EVGA GTS 450 SuperClocked, and when I was putting the card in, I accidentally broke the retention clip at the end, though I heard it doesn't really do much other than get in the way :P *I screwed in my card don't worry ;)*, but anyway so I installed the drivers and all that good stuff, but when I watch online videos like on Youtube, in the beginning of the video, the video itself will flicker and flash weird colors, HOWEVER, when you see the trailers and stuff at the top of the Youtube homepage, No problem, IF I PLAY GAMES, No problem.

I don't know if its my graphics card or maybe some weird compatibility issue, but the problem is ONLY on streaming online videos, and ONLY where the videos is framed, NOT the rest of the screen.

Please help!

BTW I love this card xD I can play BF3 on ALL HIGH, avg 40FPS

Hi Everyone! please help!
Every time I turn my computer on (after it was completely off) again which I do a lot as this laptop is so fast to turn off and on, the video streaming does not work.
So after I turn on I go to the bbc, Facebook, youtube, or other streaming sites the video loads and I can click play though it does not actually play, just a still image. same on every website. so to fix this I have to restart the computer, then it works. So for some reason turning the computer off causes this and restarting it fixes it - seems strange to me though more irritating
Second issue is that again online streaming videos stutter all websites all browsers (chrome internet explorer etc.). I have fixed this though by setting Nvidia to be used for the browsers instead of intel. Though this solution uses more power and might be related to the other problem.
This problem has been here since I got the laptop in December 2015, have updated to all the latest drivers bios, applications etc. What else can I do ???

Any help with the videos not playing would be greatly appreciated it is so annoying to turn on the computer go to websites then find you can't play the videos, then remembering you have to restart.

A:Dell XPS 15 9550 Videos online do not play after computer is turned off, also video stuttering

How are you shutting it down? If you use the standard "Start Menu" > "Power" > "Shutdown", it does not completely shut it down. It saves part of memory in a hibernation file which allows it to quickly restart. This could cause issues when you start up again. If you have not tried this, set up a desktop shortcut (right-click on an empty spot on the desktop, select "New" > "Shortcut" and enter "shutdown /s /t 0" in the box (that's "shutdown" + space + forward slash+"s" + space + forward slash+"t" + space + "0" [the number zero]) without the quotes. Click "Next" and give the shortcut a name, then "OK". This will shut the computer down completely.
The other option is to disable "Fast Startup". That should accomplish the same thing. See if either of these help.

I downloaded DirectX 9 (dxwebsetup) via my other computer to a floppy and tried to open it on the computer in question. does your motherboard have an on-board video? if it does, enable your video via bios and uninstall (add/remove hardware) your video card. if you can access the internet then try downloading DirectX. install your video card afterwards. or if you dont ahve on-board video and can access the internet, download directx directly and see what happens try installing your driver again. good luck with windows me.

Hi guys,

I have an acer aspire one KAV60 mini laptop, It was dropped and the LCD panel was broken. I used it with an external VGA monitor while the ebay LCD purchased arrived home. I didnt use the laptop for 1 month.

Today the LCD panel arrived, I changed it right away. But as soon I connected the flex cable LCD panel when On with a white light like if the LED Backlight was connected directly.

Laptop was turned off when this happens. If I turn the laptop On, then the LCD panel goes black (Led light turns off) HD powers on, vent powers on, power led is on, if I plug the AC adapter then charge led is on; but no Bios logo at all. Like if the BIOS operations where dead at all.

LCD was used but in good shape as quoted by the seller on ebay. Now, if the screen was in "short circuit" when purchased could this mess up the whole laptop? Could a defective LCD panel cause the motherboard to die?

Or could the motherboard die just becaus it cans, and that to be the reason why the LCD panel goes on white light? What do you think can be wrong now with my laptop?

Thanks in advance.

I unplugged the power cable then plugged it back in, and the CPU fan turned on for about a second, then went dead, and this happens everytime I unplug and replug. I'm pretty certain it's a PSU fault, but I just need someone to clarify this for me before I buy a new one. If it isn't a PSU problem then please tell me what else it could be and what I should do about it? By the way, I only built it a week ago, so my warranty is still valid, if that changes anything. Thanks in advance <3

Hello,in order to help people who are interested in the ThinkPad P50,I recorded 14 videos of benchmarks and gameplay and posted them on my new YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/user/KatastropoulosI think the videos show off the capabilities of the NVidia M1000M GPU in the P50.I hope that I can help people who are interested in the machine to make a decision if the GPU power is sufficient for them or not. Before I bought this machine, I had problems getting information on its performance, especially in gaming. I made videos on following games/benchmarks:Half Life 2 Episode OneHalf Life 2 Episode TwoMetro 2033The Witcher 2Risen 2Risen 3Oddworld - New 'n' TastyGothic 3Tomb RaiderGRID 2Unigine Heaven 4Unigine ValleyFinal Fantasy XIVI made benchmarks some time ago and posted the results on my blog, you can find them here:https://ikarios.wordpress.com/2016/03/09/performance-comparison-between-thinkpad-p50-with-nvidia-m10...4200m/ Best regards, Janni

Hello!
Since I've bought a new cisco router last summer, a Lynksys E1200, my computer (Sony, Vaio VGN-NW110D) freezes when i stream videos online or when I use skype video calls. It sometimes freezes for a few minutes (in that case it's just really extremely slow and it sounds like a satanic robot), and then comes back (but does it again a few minutes later. Or sometimes, and this is more frequent with skype video calls, it completely freezes, and i have to reboot the hard way...
This never happened to me before and I've been watching videos and video skyping for years. I have windows 7, service pack 1 (32 bits) now . I have windows 7 now, since about the same time i bought the router. But what makes me think its realated to the router is that when I'm at work, or at my parents, or sisters, or boyfriend's house, this problem does NOT accure.... Do you think you could help me? This is getting really annoying! I would really appreciate it! :-) Thanks a lot!

ps-Oh and I don't know if this information could be relevent, but this does not happen when I make videos calls with skype on my iphone!

I've recently been experiencing slow loading and lagging/skipping videos. Also, whenever a video has finished playing and I exit the tab/window that the video was in, my computer freezes for a bit and the gives me a message about my shockwave plugin being unresponsive. It gives me the option to stop it or continue. I found that if I just do nothing for a minute or so, it disappears and my computer returns to normal. Also my computer tends to freeze every now and then. Mostly when opening and running multiple tabs (it used to not be a problem). I ran DDS and MBAM (found nothing). The logs are posted below.

Hi guys,
I have just re-formatted my windows7 for the second time in about a week. everything is working as intended with exception to online flash videos. Youtube videos are functioning, because they are using HTML5 i suspect.
An interesting note: upon reformat and installing of my mobo drivers, i installed Avast AV and then went to animefreak.tv to check the functionality of my flash player. I was able to watch the latest episodes of Naruto Shippuden and then i got back to installing security addons for my Firefox browser. After doing this, my flash player is not opening videos on that same website i just mentioned, nor on primewire.ag (which i used without problems up until my re-format about a week ago).
I have not installed any WindowsUpdates, as right now i'm not sure that i won't re-format again to try this all over to eliminate this problem.
I am playing Star Trek Online right now, it is operating just fine, all other functions of my OS seem to be OK, just this flash video issue is all the problem that i can detect at the moment. I use my PC for browsing the web, investigating government intrusion into personal rights mainly, and also for recreation like video games and the aforementioned movie and anime viewing..
I suspect that my security addons to Firefox might be getting in the way of my flash video viewing.. I currently have 'play DRM content' disabled as snooping and tracking are my mortal enemies online..

I use Windows7 Home Premium,
Asus mobo

I would have posted this in Windows 10 but I have no clue what this is. I have a little gray box that is in the bottom left corner of my laptop screen. It is transparent and also moves to different spots when I open close the laptop. I can not click on it or move it with the mouse. Here is where it gets crazy. This box is still there when I shut the laptop down and remove the battery. Everything is running well it is just this stupid box! What can it be?

I am curious as to what the "normal" cpu usage is for watching a video, such as a divx or xvid video, and also what the "normal" cpu usage is for watching a flash video online, on a site such as youtube.

I did some tests and found when watching an XVID video, I got the following results...

Windows Media Player 11........... 30-42%
Windows Meida Player Classic..... 27-40%
VLC......................................... 12-25%

I was interested to see how much lower the usage was with VLC - how can this be? I would think they would be using the same engine for decoding, so I can't account for this difference. It also jumped around a lot, as you can see with these wide ranges.

Then for flash videos, on you tube for example,
I got...

Firefox 3 (beta 4).......... 35-50%
IE7...............................30-45%
Opera..........................32-48%

About the same for all 3. I was wondering if this is high or considered normal.
Also something interesting to note, is that if a video is playing, but i scroll down so that the Flash "box" is no longer in viewing area (i can no longer see the video playing, only hear it), CPU usage goes down to about 18-22%. Same thing happens if I keep the video playing but just minimize the page.
I'd like to hear from anyone with the same issues, or if I am just being paranoid!

Thanks,
Tyler

A:CPU usage whil watching videos and flash videos

playing flash and divx videos requires much processing power. as far as i guess your pc is p4 1.7 ghz or something like that. updating ram or agp will not work to improve performance.

Hi all,

Im new here, and I hear this is the best place to get help with my current issue. Recently I installed beta drivers from amd (14.6) and whenever I watch videos on you tube or facebook I get a bluescreen shortly after. It goes so quick that I cant really read what the problem is, but when I go check in reliability report I see this.

Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48
Locale ID: 1033
Extra information about the problem
BCCode: 3b
BCP1: 00000000C0000005
BCP2: FFFFF8800F4D52EC
BCP3: FFFFF8800B231950
BCP4: 0000000000000000
OS Version: 6_1_7601
Service Pack: 1_0
Product: 256_1

Now I have since changed to a different beta driver (14.7) and It wasn't happening yesterday but today Im getting blue screens again when watching videos. I am currently back on 14.4 (official release) and it hasn't happened yet although its only been a few hours. truthfully I don't even know if its the video card drivers that could be causing but its only thing I have modified on the system since the problem started.

Any help or advice you guys can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance!

This is normal. When you clicked OK in the "Startup and Recovery" window and OK in any confirmation pop-up, it applies the changes for you there. The only thing you need to do now is to click on OK in "System Properties".

Hello,

I recently downloaded and installed Graytech Software Inc. free CAD X11. It seems to work very well.

Here is my question. Does anyone know where to find a tutorial for this program?

I have worked my way around this program in the past few days, but this process of learning a new program seems very slow and intensive. Entities must be selected with various options like inside fenced area, outside fenced area, inside region, outside region, individual levels, single, and chain. It would be easier to have atleast a clue as to what these are and what can be done with them.

Any help is appreciated. Thank You!

Hi,
I use windows xp sp3 and we have at&t connection. I am using one of the 2 desktop computers in our home and they are not networked as far as I know. I currently use firefox browser. I hope this is the best forum for this question,

Around a month ago, for the first time ever, I got a gray pop up box that said at the top: Network connections. Under that it says: You (or a program) has requested (and I cant remember the next word, because I just lost my whole first post cause I was not signed when I clicked post, due to this being my first visit after confirmation in my email I hope you can help anyways! The box popped up while I was writing my first post and therefore I could look at it as I wrote but now its gone and so is my perfectly informative post). I'm sorry. Anyways... It says: you (or a program) has requested (maybe information?) from cr-tools.clients.google.com. (a previous box requested picasa.com, then another requested tools.google.com) Under that it says: which connection do you want to use? Inside the gray box there is a white area in the middle that has a browser listed, I remember that it said IE one time and MSN explorer this time. Towards the bottom left, it has a box to click to choose the question it asks: Dont ask me again til I log on next time. At the very bottom on the left it has a button that says settings and on the right it has ok or cancel. I click cancel every time.
What is this? I was concerned it was a hacker! But with my limit... Read more

About three weeks ago my display suddenly (overnight) produced gray stripes across the screen wherever there is a title bar or some text. On startup the screen is initially OK when blank until icons and programs start to load; it also seems OK with the screensaver. I have changed monitor and lead, and I have checked all leads and cards inside for loose connections - no change.

I run Windows 98SE on a Pentium III 500, and have an nvidia GeForce 256 video card and a Philips 150C TFT monitor.

I suspect either the video card or the processor, leaning towards the processor because I am also experiencing a spate of hang ups reported as 'low user resources' after running the PC for an hour or two.

Any ideas how I can begin to solve the problem?

A:Gray Stripes

Sorted. Problem was caused by faulty fan on video card leading to overhot video card and something has burned out; cpu is close to very hot video card and thus also misbehaving. Replacement video card has sorted everything out, including files not closing properly.

It sounds as though your flash player is trying to load to play a video. Are you on dialup? Are there any links that let you bypass the front page?
