m900 SFF - Install 960 EVO NVMe M.2 SSD - Looking for PCIe x4 / x16 adapter

Q: m900 SFF - Install 960 EVO NVMe M.2 SSD - Looking for PCIe x4 / x16 adapter

Hi All, I would like to upgrade the m900 with a Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 SSD. Given that this drive is quite fast and given that my model only seems to have PCIe 2.0, I think that I should not connect the drive to the small and slower PCIe x1 slot. For this reason, I am looking for a PCIe to m.2 adapter that fits into the larger x16 or x4 slot however I am having a hard time finding one that you can buy here in Germany. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

I have a M900 and an Samsung NVMe SSD 960 EVO M.2. On the Aminboard is a slot for a M.2 device. This is not the right one for the Samsung SSD. So I have bought an adapter (aqua computer - kyroM.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 NGFF PCIe SSD, M-Key mit Passivkühler). After installing (PCIeSlot 4x) and booting the SSD is not recognized in the BIOS and in Windows (10 Prof. 64Bit).
Where is the problem? Is the adapter wrong?

The adapter supports PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe (M Key) and PCIe-AHCI M.2 SSDs including 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 drives. The expansion slot adapter supports the most common drive sizes including 110 mm, 80 mm, 60 mm and 42 mm.

I recently purchased a m900 Tiny and installed an Intel 600p NVMe SSD in it. It immediately started showing errors in both Windows 10 and Linux 4.8, and did so even with another SSD in place of it, and even after Lenovo support replaced the motherboard. It appears to be a bug in UEFI, prior to v45 the issue did not show up under Linux 4.8 but it still did under Windows. UEFI v5F claims to have fixed this issue, but unfortunately did not actually do so under Windows 10 or Linux 4.8. CHANGES for FWKT5FA
- [Important] Update includes security fixes.
- Fix Windows Event Viewer reports WHEA_Logger Event ID 17 error with some kind of configurations.
- Support IPV4 and IPV6 boot when Boot Mode is set as "UEFI Only". I tried getting phone support to route me to someone that I could report the issue in the UEFI firmware to for nearly an hour and many transfers later they finally said they were not able to do so and that there was nothing else they could do. This is obviously unacceptable, why is it that they can't report issues to the UEFI team? I work in level 3 support, and telling the customer 'sorry' we can't tell someone else in our own company about a major issue would get a serious reprimand. -- Under Linux 4.8 the issue shows up like the following, repeated thousands of times per second: Dec 6 22:53:53 ubuntu-mate kernel: [ 5.550386] pcieport 0000:00:1b.0: AER: Corrected error received: id=00d8Dec 6 22:53:53 ubuntu-mate kernel: [ 5.550403] p... Hey,

I recently bought an M.2 PCIe NVMe adapter for my ADATA XPG SX8000 256GB m.2 NVMe SSD (I only have one M.2 slot on my mobo, which is being used by another, smaller capacity, ADATA XPG SX8000 SSD). I installed the SSD on the adapter card and then inserted the adapter into the PCIe x4 slot. When I went to Disk Management in Windows, it does not show up at all (no new unallocated disk shows up). The weird thing is that it shows up in Device Manager just fine.

Any ideas what's wrong?

Attempted fixes: I've looked in my bios for any options to enable but nothing is there that helps; I've taken it out and put it back in; I've run a memory diagnosis; rebooted multiple times; looked for drivers (there are none)

Recent changes: Just a new video card, which was added at the same time. It's a brand new system on a brand new mobo.

Hello everyone, I'm willing to buy a T470 or a T470P in the next weeks, with a 512gb pcie nvme ssd, but the price for it in my country (almost 400?) is very overpriced, I would prefer to buy an ssd separately. As I saw in the T470 review by Notebookcheck, the pcie nvme ssd takes place in the 2.5" slot via adapter. Is there a way to buy that adapter separately ?I didn't manage to find any reference for that specific part during my researches. Thank you.Regards,

Hello,My understanding is that both the T460p and T470p support PCIe 3.0 x2 via their SATAe SSD connector. The T470p has an adapter on which an M2 2280 PCIe NVMe drive can be connected and get speeds higher than SATA.  The T460p on the other hand only has this one Toshiba SATAe drive to improve on SATA speeds, and that is limited to 256GB, it is rare and cancels the WAN port for further storage. So, can the adapter from the T470p be used in the T460p? This would solve all problems for the T460p, higher speed and good capacity. Thanks

A:M2 2280 PCIe NVMe drive for T460p using T470p's SSD 2.5 adapter. Will it work?

Hi, otheosyou wrote:> it ... cancels the WAN port for further storage.the combo m.2 wwan/ssd slot isn't assocoiated with main 2.5" slot for HDD/SSD, it's a separate slot. This combo slot supports m.2 SSD SATA III 22x42 mm in size only, not a PCIe one.I haven't seen the prooves that the bracket/adapter for m.2 PCIe SSD 2280 for T470p (there isn't the one for 2.5" PCIe SSD in T470p parts list) is compatible with T460p.

Will an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD work within an XPS 8300 Desktop using an M.2 PCIe adapter ?
I'd like to take advantage of the faster speeds and use it as a boot drive if possible, if not then use it as a secondary drive along with a standard SSD drive as the boot.
Can an M.2 NVMe PCIe reach it's top speeds in an XPS 8300 ?  If not what if anything can I expect, and would it be worth it ?  Or is this something for my next Dell ?

up until windows preview build 14986, the pcie driver "Mobile 6th Generation Intel(R) Processor Family I/O PCI Express Root Port #5 - 9D14" (v10.1.1.27) correctly detects the "Standard NVM Express Controller" storage controller and the Toshiba THNSN5512GPU7 NVMe disk attached to it. starting with windows preview build 15002 (and 15007), the included pcie driver has troubles detecting the storage controller - during bootup, it is detected 4 times, with each time on a different device id. subsequently, the drive is also added 4 times, resulting in boot controller errors & timeouts and failed sleep mode/shutdowns. the included chipset driver in these latest builds seem to have been bumped to v10.1.1.33. the problem can easily be replicated by using unmodified recovery boot usb sticks made from the official isos, and then checking in a recovery console. it is thus not related to anything installed in my system.

Yesterday I installed a Samsung 950 pro 256gb m2 pcie nvme ssd into a Dell E7270
Older configuration was with a sandisk regular sata 3 ssd. After replacement did a bios reset twice, once factory reset, once custom. (I left sata on ahci.)
I chose to install windows 10 pro x64 by using the uefi/gpt methode. Legacy options off.
Installation went without a problem. Afterwards I installed the Samsung nvme driver 1.4.7.17.
Also the Samsung magician software. It reports a link speed 8Gbps (is ok), link width 16 Gbps (should be 32?) .
Is there a way to change the pcie link width from 2x to 4x? I thought this ultrabook did support x4.

I am looking for a new laptop. I currently have a X121e and recall it being extremely easy to configure on Lenovo's site. So I decided to look at the X270. However, having had great difficulty even starting to configure it (apparently, Lenovo does not favour Firefox any longer), I'm currently having trouble understanding the choices. The first is the choice between PCIe and SATA PointingDevice. Following some discussion, I gather this has nothing to do with any kind of pointing device, but affects my HDD/SSD choices. OK, so let's see what the PCIe choices give me. I get 5 'first hard drive' options. (Nothing I do gets me a 'second hard drive' option, so not sure about this. Or rather, I almost understand this now I've read the platform specification, the user manual, the hardware maintenance manual and various posts on Reddit. It depends on what you plan to use it for.  It should work if your plan is to use the drives as storage devices.  It will not, however, work if your plan includes using the M.2 NVMe drives as boot devices - this system is too old to support booting from an NVMe device.

Hi, for L390 yoga i7 I've ordered the 128gb version and I want to put a 1gb nvme in it. I've read the spec sheet, it says the 128gb comes with 2242 PCI x2, with the 256/512gb suppiled with a 2280 PCI x4. I guess the 2242 is held in with an adaptor as per the service manual so I just take that out and off I go. Now is the x2 or x4 the actual drive, or is it the actual m.2 PCI BIOS that is limited PCI x2? I'm thinking as its a custom build, it would come with same m.2 PCI slot on all models, does anyone have any idea or has anyone remove the 128gb to replace it with something larger. Thanks

As a partial follow up to the previous topic UEFI Bug - m900 Tiny - NVMe SSD - PCIe AER I finally determined what was causing my NVMe drive to run at such high temperatures. It appears that ASPM is disabled in UEFI on the m900 Tiny with no visible way to enable it. This causes both NVMe and the 8260 WiFi to run much hotter than it should. The ASPM is enabled by default and working on the ThinkPad Yoga 260 which is why its temperatures are so much lower. The NVMe drive with no ASPM runs 31C hotter at idle and the 8260 WiFI runs 21C hotter. Running that hot doesn't leave much head room for the drive under actual use, and the above temperatures are after already adding a heatsink to the NVMe drive. This issue happens under both Windows 10 and Linux 4.10. I would suspect this wouldn't be too hard to fix in UEFI. Idle Temps8260 WiFi - 28C Yoga - 49C m900 TinyNVMe - 20C Yoga - 51C m900 Tiny Active State Power Management (Wikipedia)

Hi, PCIe-NVMe SSD or normal SSD? Which kind of SSD would you recommend? A shop told me, that there are some problems with PCIe-NVMe regarding compatibility anddurability and that PCIe-NVMe is not really faster than normal SSDs. Is this true`?Thanks for any advice!

Costco is selling a XPS desktop with the i7 8700 processor. This seems a bit odd, as the only XPS I've seen with this cpu is the Special Edition (this Costco XPS is not the S.E.).
Anyway, to my question...This XPS has a 2TB hard drive. I'd like to install an SSD for the OS and programs. Can the MB support the newer M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD ? Or will I only be able to install the SATA SSD?
I know the Aurora desktops support NVMe, but I'm not sure about the XPS desktops.
Thanks.

A:XPS MB support PCIe NVMe SSD?

PERFECTLY FRANK,
Below are the storage specs for the XPS 8700.
5 x SATA-III 6.0 Gb/s1 x mSATA SSDwith RAID 0/1No IDE
The XPS™ 8700 is shipped with an optional mSATA solid-state drive. mSATA drive occupies very less space. XPS™ 8700 is shipped with mSATA drives with capacity of 32 GB and 256 GB.

I have a SATA based X270. Can I still open this up and replace (or even better, add) a PCIe/NVMe drive?

Hi all,I have a P51 laptop with 256GB SSD drive and wish to replace it with a new 512GB drive.   The new drive is the Lenovo replacement part FRU 00UP440 (Lenovo Drive SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe 512GB OPAL 2.0 FRU SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe 512GB OPAL 2.0 Samsung)However I wish to clone my existing disk over, so require a USB Adaptor to connect the new drive to.   Can anyone share any links to a compatible USB device please? Thanks

Hey guys, i'm running out of space on my HP Omen 15-5010nr and i read something about the new Samsung 950 Pro and the Samsung SM 951 with either NVMe or AHCI. They both usually work on an PCIe 3.0 Connector with 4 Lanes (x4) and i just want to know if the HP Omen is able to handle that. Does anybody has a guess or already made some experience? Ps: Sorry for my bad english, i'm from Germany ;-)

Hi

I am confused. Very confused as a matter of fact.

I would like to upgrade my PC with a m.2 drive but do not want to buy the wrong one and waste my money.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte H97-D3H. It has a m.2 slot and the manual states that it has a Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280 SATA & PCIe SSD support. I note that the term NVME IS NOT present in the description. On Newegg web site, I note that some M.2 drives have the term NVME in the description and some others do not (only show PCIe x 4).

My question is simple:
Can I buy ANY M.2 drive whether the term NVME is present in the description or not ? If the PCIe support is the same for PCIe and NVME (assuming it is), why doesn't my manual shows NVME in the description (it only shows socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280 SATA & PCIe SSD support) ?

Can anyone shed some light ? Boy !! Boy !!! Am I ever confused...I want to make sure I do not buy an incompatible drive.

Thank You
