Can a user upgrade RAM and SSD on the latest XPS15 laptop

Q: Can a user upgrade RAM and SSD on the latest XPS15 laptop

Can one upgrade RAM on the latest xps 15 laptop? (Or it is soldered like Apple laptops?)
I could see lowest priced XPS 15 with a HDD and a small ssd installed. Could I on a later date replace and upgrade to larger SSD myself?
Thanks in advance for your helpful information (in anticipation)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

DIANAKD Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I wish I had good news for you -- but I don't ... While Microsoft tells you that there is no risk in the Win10 Upgrade, because they let you believe that you can always revert back to your original OS and setup within 30 days, the ugly fact of the matter is that the Win10 GoBack function has proven to be unreliable -- and when it fails, it can leave machines in a corrupted state -- which doesn't always happen, but it does happen often enough to be a problem and you won't get any warning in advance that it is going to trash your PC!If that is not bad enough, the Win10 Upgrade is know, in some cases, to corrupt the Recovery partition stored there by the OEM that built the original machine. This pretty much guarantees that no HP Recovery is going to work: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Video-Display-and-Touch/HP-Recovery-Manager-Blocked-After-Windo... At this point, the ONLY way to restore her prior OS is through something known as HP Recovery Media. HP Recovery Media is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. I have a new XPS 15 9560. For some reason, switching user accounts is very slow. Both accounts are Microsoft user accounts. With both logged on, switching takes about 45 seconds. During this time the screen is black and the mouse pointer is active. I've updated the display driver but that made no difference. Any thoughts on what's happening here?

A:XPS15 9560 - Slow user account switching

Try creating a pair of local user accounts (separate from the Microsoft-validated ones).  Do they switch quickly?  If so, the problem is likely with the network connection or Microsoft's validation servers.  If not, it could be a system problem.

I have a 4 or 5 year old XPS15 laptop that I purchased new running Windows 7.  Computer has ran great until a couple of weeks ago.  It has now started to randomly go into hibernation.  This will happen anytime and I can't find a pattern.  When the computer does come back on, I don't lose anything even if I was in the middle of typing an email.  All hibernation setting in Control Panel are set to "never".  Below are things that I have seen and tried.
-50% of the time the computer will hibernate then un-hibernate itself within a few seconds
-10% of the time the computer will hibernate and will come back on when pressing the power button as you would normally
-40% of the time the computer will hibernate and not come back on for 2-3 minutes.  I will close the cover and unplug it and that seems to wake it up, but not really sure if it is coincidence.
-I use the laptop screen and a separate monitor.  Sometimes when it comes back on the laptop screen is black but my other monitor works.  Sometimes I have the opposite happen.  Eventually, both screens will work after a random hibernation
-This random hibernation also occurs when I am in the BIOS screen using the F2 key at boot up
-I have updated all my drivers and BIOS to the latest versions with no effect
-The random hibernation has no pattern that I can find.  Does it no matter what software is running.

Please help!

A:XPS15 laptop randomly hibernates

Hi TACOCAT,
What is the exact system model?
If the system was working fine earlier, then perform a system restore to restore the machine to an earlier point where it was working fine - http://dell.to/1Sg6khF
When you mean hibernate, do you get the message stating - the system is logging off and does the procedure occur like it is shutting down? Or does the system still stay on, however the display goes blank intermittently?
These are 2 different scenarios and need to be isolated accordingly.
If the system does hibernate - then disable the hibernation and delete the hiberfil.sys file - http://bit.ly/1jQEo5V - restart and check again. This should resolve the issue.
Restart and check in safe mode.
Enable the built in admin account and check - http://bit.ly/1Bgok2R
If the screen goes blank intermittently, however, the system is still on, then there is a different set of instructions you could follow to help resolve the issue.
Based on your response, I shall advise further course of action.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Hello,
I have an XPS15 laptop (it says Reg Model P56F under the XPS door at the bottom).  This laptop is extremely sensitive to vibrations, hits or jolts to its case.   For example it can be running normally, but if you drop a pen or pencil, onto the keyboard area, it will freeze.  If you have it in your lap and rotate around a chair and it bumps the edge of a desk... it will freeze.  If you bump it into anything, chances are it freezes.  Usually it freezes with a scrambled screen, sometimes portions of the scrambled bits are flickering or moving, like an old NES game that you had to blow on the cartridge before it played.  Sometimes it freezes with the screen going black (but the backlight remains on).   The only way to recover is to hold down the power button until the laptop turns off.  Then you can power it back on and wait 5 minutes at the Windows 10 Please Wait... spinning circle until you can log in again.

I've already had the laptop sent out for this issue.  It came back with an upgraded 4k touch screen.  I love the screen, its such a great, free upgrade.  But the problem persists.  It's not AS sensitive as it was when it had the regular 1920x1080 matte screen.  Before you could drop a pen NEXT to the laptop and that small of a vibration would cause the freeze.  Now you can bang on the table as much as you want, and as long as you don't touch the actual laptop, it remains oper... Hello everyone,
I have my xps 15 for a few months now but still I haven't found any solutions for my problems.
1st Problem:
Whenever I boot windows (or sometimes after energy-saving mode) the keyboard just doesn't work at all. I already tried waiting for a few minutes and smashing every button on it, nothing made the keyboard working again. To solve this I have to restart the computer after that it works.
2nd Problem:
Whenever I close it while running, it just won't "wake up" again. The power-button-light lights after opening the laptop but the screen stays black.
3rd Problem:
Sometimes when I want to boot windows it just won't. I see the "DELL"-logo then the few blinks at the top-left corner of the screen (A white '_' blinks 3 times) and after that nothing happens.

So these are my problems. I hope somebody can help me with these because it's very anoying if I have to start the computer twice so that it works like it should.
If you have any more detailed questions please ask them.
sincerely SgtDomo

P.S.: I have most of the "recommended" drivers installed but if you think I am missing one, please also tell me

Try using a different connection--hdmi would be best if the laptop has that. You can use a hdmi to dvi cable--same technology and those work. Those can be bought for less than $10.

Yes, the RAM can be upgraded to 2X16 = 32 G.
The internal GPU cannot be upgraded - you'd need to buy an external Alienware graphics amplifier and use an external GPU to upgrade.

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1155 - GA-P61-S3 (rev. 2.0)

Ive managed to update/flash (its the same thing?) my bios from F5 to F7 version within an utility provided by motherboard manufacturer called @BIOS ( you can find it on the same support and download section ). I had 3 options to update: from server, file or drive and I choosed the 1st one. The latest F8 version is no longer BETA but I couldnt upgrade to it at least not from server and I think I really need this since its more than half an year ahead of the previous.

However I downloaded the F8 files from manufacturer page , unpacked them and I had 3 files : one windows BATCH file "autoexec"
one aplication "Efiflash" and the F8 file p62s3.f8( I guess I need to put it on a flash drive ) .While atempting to run the 1st one I got the unsupported 16-bit aplication, with Efiflash something similar " this app cant run on this pc" message from windows 8.
So should I put them on a flash drive and then from bios menu to enter Q-flash and select update from drive or maybe doing the same witht hat utility I mentioned above? I have a Sandisk cruzer blade 16 gb.Is this good for this operation?

A:Cant upgrade to the latest BIOS

efiflash is a DOS utility. You'd want to prepare a bootable DOS USB drive and run it from that.

I'm not familiar with Qflash, but if it's equivalent to Asus' EZ Flash, that would be the simpler way to do it. I wonder whether you'd need to add the right file extension to the actual BIOS file. (For most Asus boards, the extension is .rom, but for some it's .cap.)

I'd suggest that that you read the manual, but I don't see anything about BIOS updates in the downloadable version. Shame.

First off, let me start by saying that I have a budget of $500, and I run on Windows 98. I have a lot of questions, so please bear with me. You donít have to answer them all.

Now, itís definite that Iím getting a hardware upgrade now for Christmas. Before I get into details, Iíd like to say that any general information on installing the pieces to be mentioned would be much appreciated. Also, Iím talking about regular stores such as Staples and such for purchase. Iíve never gotten anything online. That means one general question for all subjects is Ďwhatís the best one that can be brought for a low priceí?

First and foremost, thereís a hard drive in the mix. I want to get a new hard drive, and any new one I get is bound to have at least 4 times more storage data than I have now. I want to get at least 80 gigabytes (GB) to be split between 3 disk drives.
1a.) Would it be better to add a hard drive opposed to replacing the one I have now? I want more data for the stuff I have now, and I donít want anything on my computer changed.
1b.) If I do want to replace the hard drive I have now anyway it goes, how hard will it be to install? Are there any sites you can recommend for helping me do this?
Is there a way I can bring my old programs and files onto the new drive? If thereís a program to do that, will that program cost me?

Okay here's the deal;
I have seven of these to set up for users here at work, and we have several applications that need to be preconfigured and standardized for users. Thus the boot into Audit Mode for setup and Sysprepping with "CopyProfile=True" in my xml file.

First two bombed and Microsoft Support has been no help. Their suggestion is that I return it to the point of purchase as defective. I'll skip the obvious rant and move on.

First symptom that reared its ugly head was that accounts that log in after the latest version update are flawed in that the Start Menu doesn't work and there's no context menu on icons in the taskbar. I haven't dug any deeper for symptoms.

Second symptom, which came up after a fresh image downloaded from Microsoft was freezing during SysPrep, but on this attempt I installed all the updates before I sysprepped instead of after.

The second Surface exhibited the same symptoms as the first. It was SysPrepped, then updated.

I know the short answer is either "don't upgrade" or "don't sysprep" but neither of those are viable options. I can (I think) block the upgrade from happening, but that's not really what I want to do. Not SysPrepping means I'm going to be holding a LOT of hands helping users configure their profiles and hunting down applications, not something I have time for.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated. Also, if I've missed something, just ask. I'll flag this thread for notificat... Read more

My Dell Inspiron 15R laptop is 6 years old.  It came with Windows 7 installed.  Service tag 4DHR1N1.

It was auto-upgraded to WIndows 10 when this first came out.
Since then all the Windows 10 upgrades have worked upgrades have worked OK - until yesterday.

Before this, there had been an unsuccessful attempt to load
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7 for Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016 for x64 (KB3186568)

The first time it tried to upgrade, when I powered up, it went straight to "Restoring your previous version of Windows"
- even though Update History reported the successful installation of
2017-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4025339)

It then asked me to schedule an update installation time.

Following this, when I attempted to start the laptop, I got the Windows logo and spinning dots for a few seconds - then my laptop shut down.  I noticed that the fan was putting out warmer air than usual.

This happened the following 4 times I attempted to reboot the laptop.  Screen live for a few seconds, then shut-down.

On the 6th attempt, I finally got the message "Restoring your previous version of Windows".  And my laptop is now working again.

Is there ANY way I can either stop the automatic update from crashing my computer, or revert to Windows 7?

2 days ago my husband was using the computer when a Windows upgrade popped up. He installed it. At the end of installation, a message said that Internet Explorer was not currently installed as default browser, and did we want to install it? We think he clicked No. (sorry to be vague about this). When we next tried to get onto the Web, we had a completely new home page, almost entirely blank. It does not respond to any commands; sometimes it actually freezes, but usually it is just so slow that essentially nothing happens, and it stops us using any other programmes. I noticed in task manager that it seems to be using a huge amount of memory. We can get into a workable version by going into Applications:System tools: Internet Explorer without add-ons, but we can't use any music programmes or run video/music clips. The three upgrades/patches we installed were Update for Windows XP KB904942, Hotfix for Windows XP KB914440 and Security update for Windows XP KB920213. Can anyone tell us what has happened, and what to do about it? Thanks very much, Angela

A:Problems with Internet explorer following latest WX upgrade

Hi Angela

Does the new IE icon have a golden orbit around a blue letter e? If so, it sounds like one of the updates may have been IE7. Something on your system might conflict with it, or perhaps something went wrong during the installation. You can try uninstalling the last three hotfixes, then reverting to IE6 SP1 - and see if things are better. If still problematic, try a System Restore using a restore point from just before you installed IE7.

Also run thorough scans for malware infections - these can slow your Internet dramatically. Depending on what the screen looked like, it could have been a malware "scam" or "Phishing" exploit that generated the official-looking window. If you find you have a serious infection, try the 5-Step Security Checklist --- http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...kthis-log.html

Also, if you revert to IE6, visit Windows Update again - manually - and make sure the patches are up-to-date.

Best of luck

After I downloaded the latest Windows Vista Upgrade Package, my sound playback does not work. Is there something intertly wrong with the package I downloaded and it is not possibly compatible with my version of vista?

A:Sound playback does not work after downloading latest VIsta Upgrade Package.

Now apparently they work, so I have no idea what caused that issue...

Vostro 360 upgraded to Windows 10 (via ISO).
Built-in panel video is corrupted (vertical stripe down center that suggests panel failure).External monitor works fine. However, built-in panel works during boot for both BIOS and Windows 10 logo screen, and also works in Safe Mode. Additionally, the panel works fine after it comes out of sleep mode.Any time the video mode changes (e.g. by a resolution change, plugging in an external monitor, or starting the computer) the built-in panel will be garbled. Causing the system to sleep and unsleep (even immediately after startup) will correct the built-in panel video corruption.Driver installed by Windows 10 is: Intel(R) HD GraphicsDriver Date: 5/27/2015Driver Version: 9.17.10.4229I update a Vostro 360 Windows 7 system with the latest Intel HD Graphics driver, I will get the same behaviour, so it's almost certainly a driver issue. What confuses me is that no-one has mentioned a similar problem, and many have mentioned successful upgrades to Windows 10. Am I just unlucky with my systems, or is there some software variable that could mask (or create) the problem? On Windows 7, I can revert to an older driver to make the problem go away. This is difficult on Windows 10, as it continually upgrades to the latest driver.Closest similar issue is an unresolved red/green/blue colour cycling problem.http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/dell-vostro-360-and-optional-intel-graphics-driver/2fbf78e7-2c1b-4986-b711-add8... A friend has a HP laptop dating from 2010 with preloaded 7 hp. It has a number of problems and I suggested a fresh install. The product code is still legible so activating will not be a problem but the original media is lost so loading from an iso would be the way to go. Is there an up to date iso available or will there be a large number of updates after activating?

A:latest iso for laptop reinstall

There is only Windows 7 Service Pack 1, that is the latest, which itself is fairly old now.

Latest preview build is running on my 2007 C 500 Compaq laptop. Earlier versions were a bit heavy on the CPU but now is a bit more lenient towards it. Logging in takes a longish time but once up and running it's bearable.

Only things changed are CMOS battery and an 80 Gig spinner for a 60 Gig SSD.

Originally with Vista then on to a dual boot Vista/XP then 7 SP1, 8 and 8.1. Bought as a 'refurbished' laptop from PC World. Any one beat that?

Hi,

I've got an Acer laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 that was state of the art back in 2010 and I can still play games like Diablo 3 and Sims 4 on it. Now I use it as a media center and it's been parked right by my TV for the last couple of years. When Windows 10 first came I noticed that there was no longer any support for Catalyst Control Center as the OS stated that all the controls I needed was in the OS. That turned out to be wrong. My TV screen changes color every now and then, from normal to pink, and I need the control center to switch from RGB to YYC. Also, I have black edges around my TV screen that I use the control center to adjust perfectly.. Using the scaling option in Windows is useless, it only scales the edges along with everything else. I found a way to trick Windows and managed to install the control center anyway and we lived happily ever after. Or so I thought. Yesterday there was this huge update and it wiped my control center away, and now it's impossible to get back. Did Microsoft find out about the cheat?
So I'm in a tough situation here. My graphics card is out of date I guess, but my laptop is so damn nice I refuse to buy a new one just because Microsoft refuses to accept legacy drivers. I've tried several different HDMI cables and I've tried this with two different TV sets and gotten the same results. Is it really that much of a deal to write a few lines of code to those who are still using the old machines?

If anyone out there is si... Read more

A:Latest update forces me to buy a new laptop/ATI drivers

What drivers are you using? I have an even older laptop (2007) with Radeon X1600 and it works OK on the latest update.

I downloaded the Winows 7 drivers as described here

I guess in your case you'd want this link (in internet explorer only) http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/...=radeon%204650

The 64 bit drivers are the bigger ones (32 bit have the same name but are smaller) and the Windows 7 ones work well for me.

I did install the control center but uninstalled it as it didn't seem to do anything and I didn't really trust the source (I could only find it on a torrent).

I have a Laptop, plus a Desktop, both running Win 8.1 - 64-bit

I posted my question here Windows 8.1 Aug Update Released (KB2975719)

But was told I should rather post it in this section for more responses, so here goes ...

I have 1 x Laptop, plus 1 x Desktop that I need to update with the latest MS update releases.

That means I will need to download & update on each machine. Both are Windows 8.1 64-bit units, and they have both had all previous updates installed.

Given that my Internet connection is very slow, and "out of bundle" data usage is VERY expensive here in South Africa, is there a way I can download the update once, save it to a USB drive, and use that to update both machines?

If the above is possible, can someone point me to where on the MS site I can download the latest update?

Once the update file is on the USB drive, can folk here guide me on how to install the update file on each machine? e.g. can I just copy the file to each machine, and then run/execute the files?

A:Apply latest Win 8.1 update to a Laptop plus a Desktop

This what you need?

kb2975719 - Search Microsoft.com

Short answer: yes - just make sure you get the x64 version. (3rd on the list)

p.s: i know there's a virus in my computer but my norton doesnt work well...and if i install another anti-virus..it doesnt save!!

A:my laptop uses temp user and i dont know how to get bak to my user??

in computer click on c drive, click on users and your old profile should still be there. You can recover your files from within the profile.

If you install another antivirus, you must remove nortons first. You can run another antivirus from online without uninstalling anything.

Hi folks,
When windows 10 was first released I downloaded it and burned to DVD using the media creation tool from Microsoft.
As windows 10 has now had a major update, and I want to create a DVD with that update on it, without having to reinstall it later, as I have other partitions on my computer to update to 10 as well.
So my query is, does anyone know if I was to download windows 10 32 bit from Microsoft again (using the media creation tool from Microsoft) will it include the latest major update to 10?
Thanks for any help

A:Is windows 10 latest big update included in latest media creation tool

Microsoft has made available a download able iso for win 10 1511. If you don't see download link on win pc then try on some other device.. like an android phone or tablet. That's how I got it downloaded and had clean installed. Hope this helps.

EDIT link: Windows 10 ISO

Greetings!

I have Acer Aspire 5750G. My current BIOS version is 1.07. The latest version is 1.12.

There are a few versions in between. Should I do incremental updates and reach 1.12 or should I just go direct to 1.12?

Many Thanks!

A:BIOS - Incremental updates to latest vrsn or direct update to latest?

Bios updates are cumulative, so you only need the latest.

You also don't need to update the bios unless there is a fix in it/them that fixes an issue you may be having. For the most part updating the bios is as easy as updating a driver, only if a bios update goes wrong you can't roll back to the old and you basically end up with a nice paperweight.

A friend of mine from another forum just posted this:

A warning for anyone looking to buy a new Sony laptop. I spent six hours today with Sony's online chat and phone support only to find out I discovered a major bug in the latest Sony VAIO.

The new model is VPC-EE23FX/T. I got it at Walmart last night for my boss who just trashed his old Sony. Because of some sort of bug in Sony's recovery wizard this model can not be customized. In my case I uninstalled office 2010 but when restarting the recovery wizard pops up and forces a recovery wiping out changes I had made. Sony couldn't say what other changes may trigger the recovery wizard and wipe out user data. Until this problem can be fixed suggest avoiding this model.Click to expand...

Has anyone else who owns this model experienced this?

My laptop is a 1st gen i3-350M "Arrandale" (2011, I think) with 2 slots - currently 3 GB.

Would this be OK, as an upgrade?:

It might be overkill, but it won't kill the laptop, will it?

The info below the listing states it's backwards compatible, but only mentions i5 and i7.

Hi I recently bought a 2nd hand (4week old) acer e1 571. It originally had Win 8 installed, It is now running on Win 7 sp1 (afaik) with all the latest updates installed. This is why it has not just been brought back to the shop where it was purchased.
My problem is that I cannot play audio through the laptops own speakers. When in a very quiet room you can hear faint crackling from the speakers when they are turned up fully. If you plug in headphones or hdmi, the either will work perfectly no problem with sound. I have the latest Realtek audio driver for my computer installed and I have spent the last week checking and re checking all of the sound settings. The computer says that the device is ''working properly'' when I troubleshoot it. Im beginning to wonder are the speakers shot?

A:New laptop, speakers not working with latest drivers installed?

Maybe that was why it was originally brought back - the speakers didn't work? Did they work when you first got it? If not, I would take it back.

Hi Everybody,

I have a Toshiba Satellite A350-20Q Model No: PSAL6E-05GO18EN which was originally installed with Windows Vista but I have now installed Windows 7 Ult Ed. However, some of my Toshiba Specific drivers/software have been removed. For example, FN + F9 which is used to enable and disable my mouse track pad does not work. On the following website

I found some drivers, but I can't seem to find any keyboard related drivers. Some of my FN + Fxx keys work like FN+ F6 which dims the light down but not F9, can somebody tell me why some of my F9 key won't work but some of the others do? Is it a driver issue?

Thanks

A:Can't find latest drivers for Satellite A350 laptop

Generally speaking if you cannot find some specific Win7 drivers install Vista drivers.

Have you already tried this?
