Cannot access a secured share on a NAS

Q: Cannot access a secured share on a NAS

I have a NAS drive with both several unprotected folders and one protected folder. I have no trouble accessing the unprotected folders from Win10, but I cannot get access to the protected one. If I click on the secure folder from File Explorer I get the popup

I enter a userid and password as defined on the NAS . The popup disappears for a few seconds; then a very similar one pops up:

It says "connecting" and doesn't say "Access is denied", but never goes beyond that. I'm a bit puzzled because it looks like Windows is asking for credentials for the whole NAS rather than for the secured "share" within the NAS. I have no NAS-level security set up.

BTW, I've been able to access the unprotected shares with no trouble for years - both from Win7 and Win10. I've been trying using the protected share for only a couple months and have had mixed results. Sometimes I succeed, but usually I fail. I can find no errors logged on either Windows or the NAS.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Tech Support!

About 3 days ago, I stopped having access to sites such as Hotmail, Facebook, eBay on my laptop at home. The pages will not load for me but other sites (such as this one, thank goodness!! can be accessed)

Please help me as I won't be able to check my hotmail at work either as that is blocked too.

Let me know what I have to show you guys as I am very computer illiterate.

Thank you so much!

One of our field offices previously created an Access 97 db with security features, and the person who created is long gone.

Now our company is in the process of upgrading to XP. Microsoft's knowledgebase claims that all we need to do is: 1) add back permissions to all users/groups for all objects, 2) add Admin to the Admins group, and 3) recreate the .mdw file on the XP machine using the new built-in Workgroup Administrator. (Copying the Access97 .mdw file to the XP machine doesn't work.) The field office was able to do steps one and two, but step three requires them to know the EXACT Name, Organization, and Workgroup ID that were used in the original 97 db.

QUESTION: Is there any way to look inside that original system.mdw file to see that information?

I've already told them to try copying the objects from the orginal db into a blank 97 db, then converting that one, but they still get an error message about "incorrect password". The users swear that there was no password protection set (and they are able to open the db without entering a password in 97.) help?...

A:Converting secured Access 97 db to XP

Hi, Girl.

Look at the shortcuts they used to get into the DB before.
They likely had their usernames "built in" to them to connect to the system MDW. But if they tried to log onto the DB from someone else's PC while logged in under THEIR username, it wouldn't have worked.

That's what I suspect...and it's a fairly common practice to auto-get the user who's on. You can even put the password in there, but I forget what the syntax is.

I have been having this problem since I got rid of many viruses on my computer and updated the Microsoft Security patch. I contacted Microsoft and they said they believe that there is some spyware blocking me. To be clearer it is blocking me from all secured pages and my newly updated MSN Messenger and Yahoo Instant Messenger while my AOL IM has no problems connecting whatsoever. I have attached my HJT file another thing I recently found when downloading Spybot that DSO Exploit is on my computer..could this be causing the problem....

Though, this will not apply if you arn't using IE. You would have to do something else. Are you using Internet Explorer? If not, what do you use? Have you tried a alternative browser?

I have an odd issue.. a user reports that they are unable to access a network shared folder from their PC. Here is what I have gathered so far:
-The network share is from their PC located at C:\SQL2014. The share name is SQL2014. Their hostname for this example is "ABC".
-If I attempt to connect to the share from the user's PC ABC to \\ABC\SQL2014 I get the generic error:
  "Windows cannot access \\ABC\SQL2014
You do not have permission to access \\ABC\SQL2014. Contact your network administrator to request access."
-If I attempt to connect to the share by ABC's IP \\\SQL2014 I can access it.
-If I attempt to connect to the share by ABC's FQDN at  \\ABC.domain.com\SQL2014 I can access it.
-If I map ABC\SQL2014 as a drive letter, I can access it.
-Connecting to this share works fine from any other PC other than ABC.
-I've confirmed the error is affecting any profile old or new on ABC, which means it is a PC-wide issue on ABC.
-If I share C:\SQL2014 as ANY OTHER NAME OTHER THAN SQL2014, I can access it. As in if I share C:\SQL2014 with the share name SQL2014a, I can access \\ABC\SQL2014a.
-Deleted the share and recreated - same issue.
-Created C:\Test and shared it as SQL2014, cannot access \\ABC\SQL2014. It is NOT an issue with the actual SQL2014 folder.

I had an old(er) computer running XP and had files-mainly pictures (jpeg)-that were secured using the basic windows security and were password locked. I am not able to retrieve those pictures now as I have had to reformat the drive(s) multiple times and reinstalled the OS. It says I do not have permission to do so even though I had the same user name and password. I need a way to disable the security from an "unauthorized" computer from which I am using now. Using Access from Office XP.

After a colleague accidentally deleted about 100 records from our database we have recently used the "User and Group" permissions to restrict the user account from making any deletions.

The problem I have is with updating the DB. Until we used permission any changes would be made by copying the DB onto my desktop, making the changes then exporting any changed forms, tables etc into the "Live" DB at the end of the day when nobody else is using it.

Now with the permissions set a copy of the database will not allow me in, it comes up with the "You do not have permission..." error message without allowing me to log in.

Any ideas?

I am able to access any site on the Internet except the secured sites (banking sites, credit cards, etc). In this example, I have tried to access the Bank of America website. I am using Google Chrome and IE 8 and the message that I get is:

This webpage is not available.

The webpage at https://www.bankofamerica.com/index.jsp might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

This message is what I get from all of the secured sites. It seems that its any site that begins with "https://".

I've tried running the Malware Bytes, Spybot S&D, etc and they found some, which I removed or fixed. Still no luck. I also did the "regsvr dll" changes that I found from the previous "Unable to Access Secured Sites" and still no luck. I've checked my Internet Options and also followed the steps to "fix" the problem (from another message board). Again, no luck. I've even tried restoring the point to a time when I last used a secured site. Again, no luck.

I'm desparate and was wondering if there is anyone that may be able to help me so that I can regain access to the secured sites. Please help!

Have you ever been able to access secure sites ? If so, did something happen just before it stopped working ? New router ? New hardware ? New software ?

Do you have a router ?

Have you tried resetting Internet Explorer back to factory default ?

Umm, check your Services. Maybe the malware disabled something necessary to run encrypted stuff. Are you currently using Selective Startup (msconfig) ?

hi, I had this problem last week, it persisted for several days, but I was able to use system restore to fix it. Today, it has re-occured, and system restore hasn't worked. I went to Microsoft.com, downloaded Adaware, it detected a trojan virus. I followed directions to get rid of it (safe mode, disable system restore, update virus definitions, run a full scan) Trojan has been eliminated, but I still can't access my bank site, AOL IM, or Casino on Net. System Restore now won't go back since I enabled it again. I can, however, get email. Last week, I couldn't get email, so perhaps this is a different problem? I have followed directions on the Cannot Find Server page, checking Internet Options, Settings, LAN connections, etc. None of this has helped. Do you have any suggestions on what the problem could be? I would appreciate any ideas.

Help.. I have 3 desk tops and 1 Laptop. the desk tops are wireless connected via my Xfinity ( cable Modem) and a Trendnet 652- 300 mgb router setup. Recently installed the
Trendnet router ( initially w/o security). I was able to readily connect to and access all pcs to Internet.

However, recently went to Trendnet on line site and installed Router password security. Was able to connect and access the Internet on 2 of the 3 desktop pcs as well as the Laptop. However, 1 desktop ( running on Windows XP Professional, 5.1.2600 SVCPK 3, Optiplex G x 60 ) does not permit access to Internet. Once I get to the screen asking for the password ( network key) , I insert same I receive an error message stating "Network key s/b WEP pr a WPA key". "The network PW needs to be 104 bits- to be entered as a 5-13 ascii character or a 10 -26 hexadecimal characters".

FYI.. I went to the accessible desktops PCs an reviewed each of their " wireless properties" Advanc ed Settings which read -Netwk Auth. - WPA2-PSK & Data Encryp- TKIP.

However, the EX Prof. pc 's Wireless Advanced Settings options only have as options WPA-PSK & WEP settings.
I imagine that this anomily is the reason I can't access the Internet on this PC?

Okay, here's the shpeel...My client has a hp tablet notebook using xp tablet edition OS. (Her laptop from her work.) The wireless router that she is using at home is a belkin wireless N. She is able to access internet from the router fine when it's unsecured however, when I do secure it, no matter what I set it to whether it would be wpa or wep, it doesn't connect to any sites. I'm able to ping to the router, but not externally. I've tried resetting the router a few times but that didn't work. It does say, that I am connected to the SSID even though I'm unable to connect to the internet. I also tried using the intel pro wireless utility instead of using the windows wireless utility, but still no go. There's no issue with the router because there are about 4 macs on the network that access the router wirelessly just fine with or without encryption. I'm just using plain 'ol dhcp. Everything's pretty much default standard settings with the router. Does anyone know what's causing this issue?

I've got an app that requires data sharing between about five users so I decided to put a MS access back end on the server and to give each user a MS access front end with linked tables (linked to the MS access back end on the server).

BUT how come only one user at a time can access the back end tables?

IF I run two copies of the back end from one physical PC where I am logged in, both copies of the back end CAN run simultaneously with no problem.

IF I try running two copies of the front end from two physically separate machines (where I am logged on to both machines at the same time) I cannot run both front ends at the same time. One will work and the other will sit there with the hourglass until the first front end is terminated. (FYI, the back end .MDB file belongs to me with all permissions and is sitting in a folder that belongs to me with all permissions on the server.)
I originally posted this thread on an entierly separate help forum but received few helpful ideas so I'm posting it here also.

With one front end running, it is possible to start another front end (bu tnot open the forms) and to open the linked tables and queries based on them directly in the other front end instance, It's just that the forms based on queries and tables won't run in the second front end.

I've got a strange problem dealing with a 2012 R2 share.  We have a lab with 30 Windows 7 Enterprise workstations.  They all have the same desktop via a GPO applied folder redirection to a share on the above mentioned 2012 R2 server.  All
but 4 of them can connect and pull the desktop with the appropriate shortcuts, network folders, etc.

So the share permissions have no explicit denies.  In an effort to resolve this issue I've added both Everyone and Authenticated Users with Read permissions on top of the appropriate AD Group object that already had Read permissions and of
course SYSTEM and Domain Admins with Full Control.  The NTFS permissions have of course CREATOR OWNER, SYSTEM, and Domain Admins with Full Control.  The appropriate AD Group also has Read permissions.  No explicit NTFS denies either.

Using either the same account that belongs to the appropriate AD Group or my Domain Admin account (which doesn't have the redirected desktop) I can login to all workstations and all but the above mentioned four get the folder redirected desktop.
When I authenticate with my DA account and try to connect to the share on those four computers I get the same error the user gets:

Hi All,

I've been trying to set up my home network and share files. I have set everything up according to Windows 8.1 settings, but still can't see anything other than my own computer in Network. All home computers say they are "Shared" I have shared my drive, and particular folders, but can't see anything, on any computer.

I assume this is because of a security issue. So I went to the security tab in Properties of the drive I want to share and clicked the read function. But it told me it could not do this because the access was not granted to a restriction in Bootmgr.

I tried to get into Bootmgr, but it would not allow me. So I clicked out of that, thinking it did nothing. But when I went back into the security tab, the read box was ticked. This happened on all the computers I'm networking, all Windows 8. But I still can't access any files between my networked computers.

Any thoughts?

Why is this happening? I noticed that it is using the computer name for the domain, is that normal? Why would it even need to show the box if the everyone group is added to the share? I've tried everything I could think of, nothing works. It's not just Windows 8.1 that cannot access the share, even a Windows 7 box gets the same popup. My network setting have password protected sharing disabled, and use user account, not homegroup is selected. Network setting are identical on box A and B.

Our network runs on a 2008 active directory domain, and our domain controller also is an internal DNS server; we have an additional server that is our internal web server and hosts a RAID 1 mirrored file share for everyone to put their data (which we have folder redirection configured on for the My Documents folder, and people also access it as a mapped network drive). It all works flawlessly, except on two client computers.

1. The two clients can ping the file server both by name and IP.
2. Clients can can log into the file server by remote desktop, by name.
3. Nslookup shows that the clients can communicate with the DNS server and resolve the domain name to the correct IP address.
4. Clients can access the internal sites at http://<file server>

5. Clients cannot access the file share at \\<file server>, but can access it at \\
6. I have already flushed the DNS cache on the client machines.

It?s really odd, because it would seem like this is a DNS issue but everything else works: http dns works, nslookup works, and I already flushed the DNS cache. These are the only computers having any issues at all. All the computers on the network have their dns server manually assigned, and all the servers have a DHCP reservation so their IP won?t change.

You guys have any idea?

A:can access file share by ip but not by name

Still haven't been able to get any responses, so here is a bump. I hope somebody has an answer here.

I have one computer at the office (OffComp), running XP Pro, connected to internet via DSL through Qwest.
I have a remote computer (RemComp) at a home location, running XP (Home/Pro?), connected to the internet via broadband cable through ComCast.
I want the person at RemComp to be able to run MS-Access on RemComp and access a database file on OffComp. But, since there will also be a person at the office using OffComp for all kinds of things, including concurrently accessing this same db file, Remote Access is not appropriate. (Also, we don't want the lady using RemComp to have access to anything except the db file).

I know just enough about networking, VPN, file sharing and firewalls to be fairly sure that a VPN connection is what I need. I'm kind of thinking that this is not so much a "problem" (yet, anyway) as a simple, "How do I..."

So, how do I configure RemComp and OffComp so that a user on RemComp can access a specific file (or folder of files) on OffComp over the internet? (Maybe, is there a good book that covers this? I am fairly tech savy, I just don't know what the details of this process are. But I do love details.)

I have a windows 7 laptop on network.
Windows 7 laptop can see its shares but cannot access - getting "unspecified error" - yes on the permissions tab I included everyone and checked full access.. I also added my user account which does have a password and still cannot see the shares set up on my own computer.
Other Windows XP machines on the network CAN see the windows 7 share AND access it...(imaging that? other xp pcs can see it and access the share, just not the pc with the share on it)

Also - windows 7 cannot browse the other computers when I type \\ in the ddress bar.
Note - I can PING so its not a routing issue.
I also shut down my firewall software and still no good.

I have tried everything. Oh by the way, the share used to work. one day it just stopped working.
Has anyone experienced this and have a solution?

A:Windows 7 Cant access its own share

Which ever A/V software you are using is most likely causing this problem to occur. You sometimes need to uninstall your A/V to fix this type of problem. This type of thing happens all the time and it can happen with pretty much any type of A/V software, all to often the only way to fix this problem is to uninstall the A/V or configure it to work with Windows 7.

I have a few computers on the network and they have shared files.I can see their shares fine...they can't see mine.
\\ ->this doesn't work for them...they keep getting the error that they don't have permission to acess it.
this works for them. They are mixed machines...vista , windows7 but they all get the error when trying to connect directly to my ip.
I tried enabling and then disabling homegroup(not using it btw) turning password protected sharing on and off...NOTHING works
What does one have to reset/fix in order to connect to the ip and see the shares on that machine.

A:Can't access network share

try using this registry patch on the affected computer (the one that has the shared folders,

extract the attached zip file, merge the registry file (double-click on it) and then reboot. Then try to access the shares once again.

Leave password protected sharing OFF for now.

Good luck. If you need some more help, just let us know.

I am having trouble networking 2 Windows 10 computers together on my network.

This is kind of odd, I have a Windows 7 PC that can hit the file share with no issues. And on the troubled computer I can access the shares on the Windows 7 PC. But the Windows 10 desktop to the Windows 10 file server mapping will not work

On the problem computer can ping all the computers both by name and ip address. I can even connect to the server mapping to it using an IP address. Also I see all the computers in my network folder, but whenever I click on the file server I get the "error 0x80070035 The network path was not found". I to just map out a drive to the server using the IP address, but when I try this as a work around I also get the same error message. I can also connect to the DLNA share through the media section on the file server automatically.

I have the windows firewall open for what I think are the right ports, but no extra firewalls.

I was hoping someone had seen a simlar issue and had a fix, I have tried numerous things online but nothing seems to work.

A:Cannot access Windows 10 Share

So I managed to get this to work for a minute.... I turned Netbios on, on the interface adapter itself....
1- Click the Start Menu or Cortana search and type "network." (Or Click on Settings -> Network&Internet)
2- Select Network and Sharing Center when it appears.
3- Click on Change Adapter Settings in the left pane.
4- Right-click on your Ethernet/Wireless adapter and select Properties.
5- Select the TCP/IP v4 protocol and click Properties.
6- Click the Advanced button.
7- Click the WINS tab and check the box Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
8- Click OK.
9- Click OK.
10- Click Close.

I was able to get in. So I got bold and rebooted, now its broke again. I checked to see that it was still turned on and it is... Any suggestions here?

Ok so what I have is a windows 7 pro pc with several user accounts set up, I have a folder shared as g, I am booting a separate pc to dos and trying to map the share as a drive.  Syntax: net use z: \\[Share PC]\g
It prompts for a username which I have tried several users including admin users.  It then prompts for a password and I type in the correct password for the account.  It tells me the password is incorrect.  When I check the windows security
logs it shows an authentication request with the correct user name.  See the below error log.  I have attempted too many fixes to begin to list here but I have removed all group policies and verified it is shared specifically with the appropriate
users and they have full access.
Also it may be worth noting there are several other devices on the network and all windows xp devices can be mapped with their respective accounts.  Below is the event in the security log.  I have replaced instances of the server(Windows 7 Pro
Machine) name with "[Server Name]," however the server name is listed properly.  Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

A:Windows 7 can't access Share in a workgroup

does no one here search for answers??? answered here many times...click the start button and type secpol.msc in the search function.
Browse to "Local Policies" -> "Security Options".  Now look for the entry "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" and open it.  Click on the dropdown menu and select "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated".  Apply the settings.
In the Advanced sharing settings page of Network and sharing center, you need to have it set as Work/Home profile.  Try
-Enable network discovery-Turn on  file and print sharing-Turn off password protected sharing-Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers
The other settings such as encryption I have set as use 128 bit encryption.
Please check related policies.
1. Enter “gpedit.msc” in the Start Search box. 2. Open “Computer Configuration”/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Settings.3. In the right pane, enable the following policies:
Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translationNetwork access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users
Also please disable the following policies.
Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and SharesNetwork access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accountsNetwork access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares
