Finding the source of data usage

Q: Finding the source of data usage

My laptop is running Windows 7 Premium Home edition. Is there a way to figure out what downloaded to my computer on a specific day and/or figure out what web site and/or program used large amounts of data on a specific day within a time range? I recently had three days with unusual spikes in data usage on my internet plan, but I can't figure out what actually sucked up the data. I did not download any movies, did not stream any shows, and the data spike does not correspond with the timing of the most recent Windows update. I have not (knowingly) done anything outside of my "normal" internet behaviors. I am stumped.

Preferred Solution: Finding the source of data usage

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Alright, hey guys. I've been having trouble for a few days with my computer, and I'm now more or less stumped. I'm posting in this section, though I'm not certain if Vista is actually at fault.

OK, so a few days ago I booted up as per, only to be met by the black screen bug that I've seen so widely reported across the net. After searching for fixes-and trying them all, I instead went with reinstalling windows completely because none of the 'solutions' solved anything more than remporarily. After doing that, the machine worked a treat. Until I restarted it.

Now I'm struggling to install just about anything. I tried installing bitdefender (which previously had worked fine) only for it to be constantly killed by the data execution prevention, which never happened before (I uninstalled it now). I tried reinstalling my xbox 360 wireless connector, but the usb socket didn't want to work anymore (I switched socket and that did-eventually, install, but only after disabling my mouse which took me another 20 minutes to get working again...) I tried reinstalling steam, which never actually opens. Chrome only opens half the time, and often after a big delay.

I'm also having chronic slowdowns, the windows still seems unstable, crashing repeatedly and just freezing even when idle.

And strangely, the PC won't actually shut down anymore. When asked to close, it does go through the usual process of shutdown, and the monitor stops getting any fe... Read more

I'm in need of a little help. I work at a local IT company in my home town. We are currently servicing a range of about 50-60 Small Businesses and just under 600 Clients.
Recently one of our clients got hit with an infection that was promptly removed, that was using their emails to spam and causing some issues. Now we use Vipre Anti-Virus
on all our clients and it seems to not be doing the trick for some.
What is the best way to trace back an infection to see if it was an email attachment a drive by download or whatever it may be so we can know where to begin concentrating our efforts?

A:Finding the Source of the infection.

Do you know which machine was infected first?
If you don't know which machine, look into the logs of your e-mail server to see which machine send out the first SPAM mails.
Then check the same logs to see which e-mails the user of this machine received, and the proxy logs to see which sites were visited.
If you don't find something, ask the user if removable media was connected to that machine prior to the infection.

I want to start with the fact that I'm not ignorant when it comes to computers. I bought and assembled my pc part by part.

A few days ago my pc started shutting down after playing for a while. Not rebooting. Shutting down. I have come to the conclusion that it's definitely not a software problem.

It is curious to note that my hardware hasn't changed since the day I bought my pc, a few years back. Also, the games that make the pc shut down never caused this before. With software and hardware that hasn't changed in months, suddenly my pc is overheating. Curious.

Perhaps too much dust? Maybe my hardware getting less efficient with age? Who knows. I only care about finding the source and fixing this. I can't even play Minecraft for and hour anymore!

I installed SpeedFan and a label that-I-can't-do-anything-but-assume-it's-the-processor got around 94 C while playing. It was here that I realized I don't know anything about running temperatures. Don't know if 94 C is normal. Other than that the program wasn't very useful. Too many unnamed labels (and apparently 2 of my cores are below 0 C).

I suspect the problem is either the processor, the chipset, or the PSU.

My pc:
Intel Core 2 Quad (2.4 GHz)
2x Geforce 9600 GT
3x assorted HDD's
Cooler Master PSU (can't remember right now but about 550w or more)

Never been overclocked. Also it has no warranty anymore. So I need good advice. How can I f... Read more

I just installed brand new Windows 7 pro into 2 years computer, fresh installation. The computer is working, everything look fine but it gets BSOF

I am trying to find what's wrong,

-Windows Memory utility didn't find any errors and now I am about to run Memtest86.

Update #1.
So far memtest86 finds a lot of errors, all the screen is red... so it's not looking good.

Update #2
I am testing the memory sticks separately, the one that was is slot A i get the errors in memtest so i removed it, the other 4 gb looks ok.. i don't get any errors so far, after 6 minutes

I have a graphics issue I hope I can get some help with. Please forgive the long post. I want to provide as much info as I can.

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 8700 (Windows 8.1 64-bit, Intel i7 3.6GHz, 8GB RAM) and a ViewSonic VA2465smh 24-Inch LED Monitor. I've had it for just over a month now. Running it pretty much as it came except that I put the OS on a Samsung 128GB SSD. I've been noticing some visual artifacts (I think that's what you'd call it) while watching videos. It appears as red streaks or trails around dark portions of the image as it moves. I notice it most around the eyes or mouth of a person in the video. I'm trying to figure out what the most likely source of the problem is.

My first assumption is just a weak graphics card, an NVIDIA GeForce GT 720 1 GB DDR3 that came with the Dell. But before I spend the money on a new card, I'd like to make sure there is not something else I should be looking at.

I've updated the drivers with ones from the GeForce website. That actually made the issue worse than with the older drivers provided by Dell.

I thought maybe it's a codec issue. I have the K-Lite Codec Pack which I used for years on my older computer w/o issues. I've tried tweaking some of the settings in the configuration tools randomly but I'm not sure exactly what to be focusing on. If there's a different codec pack I should to try, please let me know. It does appear that the red streaks show up more when I play video in WMP compared to playing in VLC. Bu... Read more

The video card that came with the Dell is fine to play DVD and BD movies. BUT that doesn't mean your card is not faulty/broken. I have one computer with an intel i3 (intel HD3000 on-board graphics) that plays 1080p BD movies fine. I think something in your setup is messed up. One of the difficulties setting up a computer for media playback is figuring out what programs to install, what codecs might be needed, and how to get everything to play nicely together.

I'm a JRiver Media Center user. I chose JRiver because they use the "best available" renderer (madVR) and LAV filters and you don't need to know anything to get it working. It self installs. You just need to tell it where the files (media) is. This program costs $50 but you can try it for free for 30 days - and when it installs it doesn't overwrite or touch anything else on your computer - so uninstalling puts you back exactly as you were.

So, as a test, install the trial, and if your movies play correctly, you will know that the hardware is good and something else is messed up. Then you can uninstall it and go back to whatever you were using - or pay the $50 to keep it. JRiver Media Center software

If you'd rather stay with the "all free" solution, I would suggest getting the "Shark007" codec pack Shark007's FREE Codec solutions - Windows 7 codecs - Windows 8 codecs - Windows 10 codecs, and using "MPC-HC" as the player https://mpc-hc.org/.

Here's a summary of how I ended up asking this question here:

Decided it would be a good idea to backup hard drive on my desktop pc.
Downloaded free version of Macrium Reflect, touted for it's ease of use for non-power users like me, not to mention its freebeeness. The program creates either a Linux-based boot disk (didn't work) or a plan B using a program called PE Builder to create the boot disk. PE requires the Windows XP SP1 or higher (I'm using SP2) 'installation source files'. I looked up how to find these files which I learned is:

To find the installation path without Tweak UI, select Start, Run, type regedit, and press Enter. Select MyComputer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup in the left pane, and in the right pane, find the value named 'SourcePath'. The installation path is listed in the Data field.

Once at the ..\Setup pane, there was no 'SourcePath' entry. The entries are as follows:

As you can see, there is an 'Installation Sources' entry so I tried that path, but that didn't work either:

So, ANY idea where these files are residing?

A:Solved: Finding Windows XP SP2 Installation Source Files

The circled entry indicates your system was installed from a CD, so the SourcePath is the CD-ROM drive letter.
I'd still expect the SourcePath item to be there though, right under ServicePackSourcePath.
Just put in your XP CD and set the Source in PEBuilder to the CD-ROM drive letter.

If your disk doesn't include SP2 you can slipstream it into your XP disk to make a disk including SP2.

Slipstreaming Guide:
This guide walks you though Using Autostreamer to slipstream a Service Pack.
Though it refers to XP, the AutoStreamer program works with Win2K (adding SP3/SP4 to any version) and Win2K3. Also works with adding SP3 to XP.
You can also use nLite.
You can download the service packs from here: SP2 or SP3.

this happens completely by random
my ram usage would suddenly pop up to 95% to 98% for around 5mins or more
would be simple to just kill the process thats using that much memory right?

and i have 4gb of ram and there is NO possible way for these ram usage to add up to 3.8gb

its the ram usage graph of what happens after the random spike and the spike that occurs afterwards
theres also immense lag and freezing that occurs after ram usage returns to normal (yes i couldnt move my mouse when it froze there)

and the even more odd thing is CPU usage remains the same as it was when it was idle

why is this happening and how do i fix it >.<
gonna do a virus scan tonite and see if anything turns up, i have a hunch that nothing will turn up....

then again it might be hardware failure.... hope not

I have a csv data file that I've downloaded which I want to do some reporting on, eventually turning it into a pivot report.

However, this source csv will change weekly when I download it (mostly appended, but possible data changes anywhere). When I have worked with a dynamic data source in the past, I've created a link to it through Excel's Get External Data options. If I link it to this CSV it just imports the data.

I would like to design an elegant solution where the source csv can be downloaded, then the reporting Excel file opened and linked to this newly downloaded csv, with the changes in data reflected in the report.

If I were doing it manually, I would copy the entire csv into tab1, format it as a table, change the table ID to something unique and then link the pivot reports to it, but this is an inelegant solution.

The fields in the CSV will remain constant, but the number of rows will increase each time. I'm using Excel 2010.

A:Best way of using CSV as a data source in Excel

Hi Drew,
You can still do this, all you need to do is create a macro that reads the csv file into an existing sheet already in your reporting Excel file
You will have to agree for a file location where the csv file can be found and also a naming convention, if the fileds are always the same then all you need is macro that erases the data in the Excel sheet, not the sheet, and reads the new data into this same sheet, your macro collecting the data must just specify what the last row is and your report can be refreshed.
Import thing to keep in mind:
csv file location must be specified
csv filename must answer to specific conditions (naming convention)
All these things can me made dynamic, never hard code this so that your macro will become dynamic and little or no changes have to be coded before running it.

Hi guys,

I seem to be having an issue with the RAM allocation on my system. This only occurs when playing the game "Wildstar". It may be on their end, since the game is in beta, but I would like to figure out what's causing the odd displaying of memory usage in my case.

In the Task Manage, while playing the game - memory usage is shown as ~95-98% total, while Wildstar itself is using 2-2.4GB. When I quit the game, memory usage is shown as 39-40%. I have 8GB of RAM, this means that Wildstar would be using ~55% which is ~4.4GB. However memory usage under processes only mentions 2-2.4GB, while percentage wise it seems to be using the double.

Since this pushes me so close to 100% RAM usage I'd like to figure out how this is possible. I have made a couple of screenshots that should hopefully help out with this. I made an album of these, that include RamMap and the Resource Manager:

It would be awesome if anyone that has some knowledge in how Windows allocates RAM could have a look at these and perhaps enlighten me on what causes this. If additional information is required please let me know and I will do my best to provide you with it.

After running SpyBot, an entry has came up for "Data Source Object Exploit". After some searching, I've found that an MS Security Update does in fact have a fix for this (strangely enough though, my win update shows this fix installed on the day it was released, as does the "About Internet Explorer" option under Help menu).

Anyhow, thought I'd give it another try. Followed instructions on MS update site, Security Update, March 28, 2002, and after downloading file (Q319182.exe), a splash screen (Security Warning) comes up, asking if I want to install and run the update. When I select yes, a window comes up informing me that "This update requires Internet Explorer 6.0 to be installed.".

I am currently running IE 6.0.2600.0000.blah.blah.blah.

Repeated attempts to install this update bring up the same message.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a remedy?

Hi, I wondering if anyone can help answer a problem I am experiencing with using Windows 7 own backup tool.

I have two 500GB hard drives in my system. Drive 0 is partitioned with 390 GB as the C: drive containing Windows 7 and user data, the remaining space is unallocated ready for me to install Ubuntu 9.10. Drive 1, as D:, is the full 465.8GB and is planned to store backups. Before my initial backup this drive was empty.

In the past I've used Acronis to backup, but my version is old and before purchasing the latest version I thought I would try Windows own backup as I have got the impression that it's pretty good.

However, backing up my C: to D: takes up more space than I expected it too.
Size: 390GB
Used: 185GB
Free: 205GB

D: after initial backup (drive empty before then)
Size: 465.76GB
Used: 320.01GB
Free: 145.75GB

Is there something I doing wrong? or is there a reason why it is nearly twice the size? I chose the recommend option and let Windows decide what to backup, was that the wrong decision?

If it helps these are the three files/folders I see at the root of D:
MediaID.bin, WindowsImageBackup and LIANLI-QUAD (my computer name)

A:Why is my Backup data bigger than it's source

Hi there
why bother upgrading -- I'm still using an old version of Acronis true image.

To make it run in W7 just change the executable name from AcronisTrueImage.exe to TI.exe (only do this if you get "Compatability prevented this program from running).

My version of Acronis true image workstation gave this message but there's 100% no reason why it is incompatable.

With the TI.exe fix I've backed up and restored 100's of images and files - no probs whatsoever.

Don't spend money unless you really have to - especially in these times.

KB article 885832 states exactly my problem. I have an Access query which makes a table as the data source for a Word 2003 merge document. It takes the results of a single record and plonks it in a table and does that exactly as expected. However when access calls Word2003 it says I need to locate the data source - I do that, I save the file and bingo I get the right result. But the next time and subsequently every time I run that merge I get Word stopping and asking for the data source. If I just click Cancel -it finds the correct data source anyway!
The fix is suggested that Office 2003 Service Pack 2 is installed. I have done that and it has not fixed the problem
Has anyone experienced this very annoying problem which has cost me a whole day trying to rectify?????

When I go into the ODBC to set up the connection under System DSN, it's completely blank. No Access DSN, no Excel DSN, completely blank. If I try to ADD a DSN the only options shown are SQL DSNs which I can not use.

Initially, I called UPS Worldship Support. They referred me to Microsoft. After nearly 2 hrs on the phone with MS, they told me to call HP since HP preinstalled the Windows 7 and they handle any software/warranty issues.

So, I called HP. Their support is the pits. Nobody I talked with even knew what a DSN is (they kept telling me it was DNS not DSN and they are 2 different things!!). Then, they suggested I call Microsoft and PAY to have them help me.

This is a brand new PC and it's a Windows 7 issue, not Worldship, not hardware, yet I can get any help.

I've tried some of the options on the various forum (running the 32 bit.exe, copying files, etc) and nothing has worked.

Anyone have any ideas HOW I can get the Access and Excel DSNs in the ODBC Manager? I need help asap as this is a critical PC to our shipping area. Without it, we are unable to ship via UPS and losing $$$.

Thanks for any suggestions because I'm fed up with Microsoft AND HP!!!

Hello tandrews, welcome to the forum.

First, let me say that the subject of your query is not actually in my knowledge base, However, in an effort to assist I did a search and thought I would offer the following:
ODBC: frequently asked questions

Step-by-step guide on how to set up DSN in ODBC Data Source Administrator on Windows.

and here:

Hopefully something in there might help.

I have a chart in Excel. The range for the chart's source data changes each week as new data is added. I'm trying to write a macro which will capture the source data accurately. How do I do this?? I'm guessing that there must be some way to enter a formula for the source data which will start at the bottom of the sheet and and end at the last data value, but I'm not sure how to input this logic into the formulas below. I previously had the source data set statically until I noticed the error.

Please help!

ActiveSheet.ChartObjects("Chart 1").Activate
ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(1).XValues = "='Graph Data'!R3C2:R291C3"
ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(1).Values = "='Graph Data'!R3C11:R291C11"
ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(2).XValues = "='Graph Data'!R3C2:R291C3"
ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(2).Values = "='Graph Data'!R3C7:R291C7"

Hello. I'm using Office XP for this.

I've been trying to do a mail merge using an Excel spreadsheet as the datasource. It should work okay, but when I view the merged data or edit the recipient list all the cells contain zero's. Can anyone help with this? Is there something I'm doing wrong (apparently...)?

I've also a question about why Word asks me to choose a table. Exactly what tables is the app refering to? Regardless, no matter which table I select the only data I can see are zero's.

A:Help with a Mail Merge data source

Edit WHAT recipient list? In which file?

What are you expecting to get besides zeros?

Do you have formulas in those cells and not values?

Choose a table? You mean when you go to get the data source file? If so, open the Excel file. Select the entire range of data. Hit Insert-Name-Define. Call it MyMerge. When you connect to it as a data source, choose MyMerge.

sigh..sorry for constantly bothering you with questions, well after my factory restart and download of most updates, and installing avast, my cpu is high at 20-40% idle and 60-99% when doing 1 or 2 things. im not sure if its just avast not being customized to not use so much cpu, the update setting i have to download the update and let me decide to install them or not or if its something that should not be there. again sorry for posting yet another thread,i just need a quick look and some thoughts.

right now the mb usage is 3.74GB

Keep an eye on netsvcs - svchost.exe (netsvcs) using DataStore.edb

However, it may very well be several updates running same time.

I have WIN 7 Home Premium (service pack 1) 64-bit. I have several email addresses including gmail & hotmail and I use Windows Live Mail version 2012. I do not have Outlook.
I have been asked to do some email merging for a club I belong to. The data source is an Excel spread sheet with names and email addresses and other data. I have carefully studied what must be done and all goes well when I send emails to people who are listed in the contacts section of my WLM. But many of the members listed in the table are not in my contacts list so the Word mailmerge system stops when it gets to someone not listed. I am fairly sure this is the reason because I have experimented with an address in and not in my contacts list.
Should I export everyone from the Excel table to a csv file and then import it into my contacts list or does anyone know a better and neater way?

The alternative is do it manually, which is probably the easiest if there are not too many.

I have Windows 7 and Office 2007.

How can I have a Word Mail Merge read the data source when the data source has multiple records for one client? For example one client with 5 household members with associated Income fields, instead of listing them in one row across they are listed in 5 down. I've tried the Next If Rule and If, Then Else but can't seem to get the code right.

I'm currently working on the Excel file to merge all the fields into one row but doing this will create so many fields and everytime I run this merge I'll need to format the spreadsheet this way. I was hoping for a more efficient way since I was needing to run this again in future for each client.

If there is a better way to do this other than in Word I'm open to suggestions. I just thought a Word Merge would be best.
Attached is the Word Merge Document I need and the Excel spreadsheet is the sample data source. The data needs to dropped in the associated fields in the Word document. You'll notice if I put them in one row then I'll have more than a hundred merge fields. So hopefully there is an easier way to do this.

Any help with would be great.

I need to create a system DSN that links a program to a database (to keep it simple). I've already done this, however I have moved the database location to another computer. It is imperative that I recreate the system DSN with the exact same database name as before. The problem is: even though I've removed the previous dsn, when I go to create the new one it denies me by saying this database name has already been used. Sure enough the database name still exists in the drop-down list of database names in the create databse dialog box. I've checked the ODBC.ini files and manually removed any references to the database name I want to re-use to no avail. How can I re-use (or clear) a previously used database name?

Hi all,

For some unknown reason, when selecting source data for charts (new and existing), I cannot use CTRL to select more than 9 cells. As soon as I hit the tenth cell I get a system beep, and the cell selection bar empties. I used to be able to do this without a problem (for updating a thirteen month trend graph).

Can anyone help explain why this is so and how I might be able to rectify this?

A:Solved: Excel chart source data

Here's a complete guess -- although Help doesn't say anything about it, maybe there's a limit to how many characters you can have in the "cell selection bar" (255, possibly).

Try shortening the sheet name (?as a test?) ; or building it with 9, then drag'n'dropping the remaining 4 in turn (as new points).

I have a number of Word documents that USED to be linked to a datasource file. All of the documents as well as the data source file reside on a "Share" computer in a Peer-to-Peer Windows XP Pro SP2 network. The documents used to just open up with the data source file already linked on every other computer in the office....but now they don't. I get prompted to locate the data source for the document, but when I point it to the DS file it still doesn't open it. BUT.....If I copy the "DS" file to the local users hard drive, reopen the documents, point them to the DS file....it works fine. Then if I move the DS file back to it's original location on the remote Share system....The documets STILL work fine. I'm totally confused and frustrated. So my question is: Why will each document not identify the DS file automatically anymore?.....at least not until I have to copy it back and forth once.
I know this explaination is vague but any suggestions would be welcomed!!

A:Word 2003 data source problem

hmm not really sure but when you said that you copied the DS file to the local HD and then they all worked might be the clue. Perhaps.

I am wondering if you go to the "Share" PC, I assume its the "Server" and open each of the files and point them all to their appropriate DS files and then save it all. In other words maybe the "original" organization has become "unstuck" and needs resetting so to speak.

Then when you re-access the documents from further up the network....well....lets hope.

then CTRL + F

it'll take you right to the sheet and the cell with the value.
