I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have for a while had the problem that System Update is not completing the search for available update for my laptop X! Carbon running Win10 64-bit, it hangs every time at 97% and never completes or continues beyond 97%. Have tried several things including removing all Lenovo tool and reinstallation of new version of System Update 5.07.0065. Suggestions?

Hi all,

W7 did a long (unusually-long per the norm) update a few days ago and performance has been awful since. I haven't installed anything else (until yesterday, a new Opera version), and I've virus-scanned and found nothing.

The issue: the whole system will just sit there for several seconds up to a minute without doing anything - not completely frozen, but browsers esp. will just lock up. Checking the task mgr, it looks like nothing is happening - only the task mgr and sometimes WmiPrvSE will show any activity whatsoever - and it never goes above 5% CPU while it's hanging.

Sometimes at boot up it will take 2-3 minutes before I can do anything.

Ideas? Thanks!

Thursday night I installed a round of updates from Windows Update. All went well during the process. I even noted that that it said "Creating restore point." Since then, my system has been acting very erratically. I tried to restore to before the update, but it appears that all my restore points have been deleted.

More Info:
The most common problem is that 5-10 minutes after I boot up, my system will hang. I will still be able to move my mouse, but any programs that I have open will stop responding. I'll have to do a hard reset to start the process over.

One time I did get a BSOD. It read STOP: 0x000000F4. Here's the dump file: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

What I have done already:
- Run scandisc
- Tried increasing the amount of space reserved for restore points to 20gb
- Tried running a selective startup with only MS services at startup (This seemed to work once, but I can't reproduce it)
- Tried uninstalling the updates, but I'm unable to do so in safe mode

I've searched the forums and it seems like a lot of other people have had this problem. Luckily I'm able to start up in safe mode to write this, but so far none of the other suggestions have worked.

A:Windows update hangs the system after shutting it down

The system should be able to start an automatic repair.

First of all you should perform a complete shut down of Win 8.1 as described in this document:

After that you should reboot the notebook…. Usually the system would start a self-repair procedure which should fix the update issue.

Hi - I have a Lenova TP X260 that will not get past 10% on the update scan for drivers and software, accessible under the technical support pages     DRIVERS & SOFTWARE --> SYSTEM UPDATE --> Start Scan. It runs up to 10% and then hangs.  It has been this way for several months, and I am sure that there are probably updates that I need.  I am running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 x64 fully patched from MS. Can someone give me some guidance, please, on what may be the problem? Thanks in advance!

After this month's windows update for my xp sp3 system, I've determined that any of the several .net framework updates cause my system to be unresponsive until alg.exe - application layer gateway - runs followed immediately by the exit of the windows genuine advantage program.

Until these occur, programs like firefox (which can be launched as soon as my normal desktop appears) are unresponsive to any menu or button clicks. This behavior is not new, it's just that after these updates there's an extra (approximately) 2 minute interval on boot up that wasn't there before. There's no cpu activity during this delay and even the start button is unresponsive during this wait time.

Researching alg.exe, it seems to be something that 3rd party software might connect to related to internet or windows firewall. There are a couple of other system programs that run for an instant just as alg shows up. I'm monitoring it with procexp.exe from MS (launched from the startup folder).

Individually un-installing the .net updates did not restore prior behavior. Only rolling back to my nightly image backups restored my system. I had to do several rollbacks to find out which updates cause the problems - and it was at least a few of the .net updates (like kb2656407, kb2604110, or kb2604121) while all the other updates caused no problems. Except for these .net updates, I've installed every other update for windows xp.

Yesterday, May 3, 2013, my desktop PC, (custom GB MB build,) hung on reboot with the message that usually displays after an update that requires a reboot: "Please wait while Windows configures your computer." I did a system restore prior to that because my system had slowed to modem speeds while using any of my internet browsers (IE9, FF v20x, and GC v10.) Of course, Microsoft Update kicked in since my restore point was April 28, 2013. System Restore would not complete the task in desktop mode, so I booted to Safe Mode to do the restore point. I had just update NOD32 AV just after the system restore and prior to the OS update. There are no error codes or BSOD. I had gone somewhere and come back to find that it had spent 3 hours on this screen with the above message. There is no "percent complete" message. My system turns off the monitor after 20 minutes. I don't think the HD turns off. I keep my system up to date on all programs ASAP and I run cache cleaners and AV routinely. I use Windows 7 firewall and no other. I also run MBAM in the background. Any ideas?

excuse me for my mistakes bu I am not a native English speaker.

I run a Windows 7 Pro sp1 x64 and I use NTBackup.exe to perform my weekly full backup (I know that NTBackup is not meant to be run on Windows 7, but it perfectly fits my needs and it perfectly run until last windows update).

Since last windows update of 10/02/2015, NTbackup fails and in the NTBackup log I find this message: "Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:Catastrophic failure".
Looking into Windows Event Log/Applications I find 3x error messages related to in VSS, where the only really significant one is "Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance.  hr = 0x80004002. 42554543584D4C43333533320000000042554543584D4C433334393400000000".

I spent the last three hours reading about potential NTBackup issues and I think I can exclude those related to VSS itself because:
- the "Volume Shadow Copy" and the "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" services perfecly start, stop and restart
- I can browse previous versions of files being saved (e.g. because of system restore points)
- the "vssadmin list writers" reports all writers being stable and with no errors
I therefore wanted to try and uninstall the KB3032622 but was unable to, since it is not listed in those than can be uninstalled.
Here my questions:
1- Is anybody experiencing my issue?
2- Has anybody been able to solve it? ... Read more

A:Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable Package (KB3032622) breaking NTBackup

the only other thoughts I have;
- it could be broken, because it was never intended to function, and it has only worked ok until now as a happy accident
- it's extremely unlikely that MSFT would have ever tested for the use of WinXp NTBackup on Win7, so unlikely to get formal support for the scenario
- there may be others with related experience, you may find in the dedicated storage/backup forums like

Please help! A couple of weeks ago many functions of my computer ceased to work all of a sudden. It was just after I'd used Photoshop for the first time in ages as I don't usually work from home any more. The program had been producing errors when loading ever since I installed an updated version of Cry Engine, which installed a plugin for PS, so might have been something to do with PS if that helps?

Here is a list of the issues, all began simultaneously:

Computer will not shut down properly - just hangs on the logging off screen.
Safemode is just a black background. The only thing that appears is a wacom virtual keyboard interface.
Can't access control panel functions like system restore (asks for permission as normal but doesn't appear. When attempting to relaunch it says it is already running), networking, and can't add/remove programs.
Windows cannot install updates. It either freezes or tells me that another update is currently being installed.
Internet is intermittent but always appears offline in the tray at the bottom right. Clicking on or hovering over the network symbol does not bring up a menu.
Task manager does not open but the green square appears on the tray at the bottom right to say it's running.
Photoshop does not run. Also itunes, windows picture viewer and maybe more that I haven't tested yet. However, autodesk programs seem unaffected.
Sometimes startup fails in normal mode as well - following logging on there is j... Read more

A:MSE Client Update Package - V4 failed

I got the update notice yesterday and used your first link. When I clicked the Free* download button it showed an upgrade dialog box and the upgrade went smoothly. It's possible that you may have remnants of the old version of MSE that are preventing the new version from installing. This Microsoft KB article may help.

How to manually uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0.1963 if you cannot uninstall it by using the Add or Remove Programs item

I'd use the Fix it button first and then try to reinstall MSE. Remove Avast first through Programs and Features and then run the official Avast uninstaller to remove any Avast remnants.

avast! Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for avast! Removal

If the Fix it button doesn't let you reinstall MSE then I'd try the "Let me fix it myself" steps.

I have an HP laptop running Vista SP2 32bit system. I went to bed on 10/1/2012 with my computer running fine. I woke up the next day to find all hell had broken loose. Hi Guys
Is there a package to overall update norton antivirus 2004? Both virus definitions and the program itself and without connecting to web.
I got connected to the internet on a friend's XP before installing SP2 and updating norton, and now norton antivirus is disappeared from tray and won't run, even after uninstalling and reinstalling.
I'm now planning to update both NAV and XP offline, because updating them through the slow dial-up is almost impossible and makes the computer vulnerable to viruses. I've got SP2. All I need now is an offline update to Norton AntiVirus.

A:Solved: Norton AntiVirus Update Package

I don't know about program updates but, when I had NAV, I frequently used the Intelligent Update feature on the Symantec website to d/l the whole definitions database, about 5.5 MB, to my desktop as an .exe file and then installed it myself by doubleclicking.

I suppose that it would, theoretically, be possible (and legal?) for someone with a licensed version of 2004 to d/l the database and burn a copy which you could install in your licensed copy. However, now that NAV uses product activation, it is possible that your friend's version of the database would not install in your copy.

Anyway, before you could even try that, you would have to successfully reinstall your copy of 2004;http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...=2004 for Windows 2000/Me/98/XP&osv=&osv_lvl=.

So I downloaded the latest driver for Intel 4500MHD integrated graphics for my laptop from windows update (which it did automatically after installing Windows 7) and I found out that it isn't just the display driver... its also the software package for display settings etc. from Intel. I don't want this because it installs startup keys, a right-click context menu, and a tray icon, all of which I would never use. Is there anyway to uninstall the software package but keep the display driver?

I find it kind of lame that Microsoft would bundle drivers like this.

Hi, I am not sure about this....

I run Secunia - the software updater/ checker and it tells me that this is outdated and needs a patch for "security reasons"

microsoft visual C++ 2005 redistributable package (x86)

Does anyone know what this is and do I really need to update it?

Obviously I can make a system image before installing in case anything goes wrong but I was just more curious to know what this is.

PS I am 32 bit!!

A:Update Needed: Microsoft visual C++ 2005 redistributable package

Microsoft Visual C++ is normally installed along side an application. They install runtime components of Visual C++ Libraries which are required to run applications developed with Visual C++ on a computer that does not have Visual C++ 2005 installed.

Theres a good chance that a piece of software on your system requires the C++ libraries to run, it is safe to leave the application on there, you might have issues with a specific program if you remove it.

If you can verify the update is coming from Microsoft, there should be no problem downloading an update for it.

These other viruses unleashed a numerous amount of permissions, disallowing me to: Open any applications(such as Malewarebytes, and other antivirus software + nvidia firewall), running taskmanager, opening the run tool or CMD prompt, and worst of all running Windows in safemode, it simply reboots with every attempt. I've seem to have run out of options short of format and reinstall. I'd list the accompanied viruses if i was able to scan for them.

Relevent system information is avaliable upon reqest.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello and welcome. Yes these newer variants need to be stopped first. Please download Rkill by Grinler and save it to your desktop.Link 2Link 3Link 4Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.If using Vista, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully. If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.Next run ATF and SAS:Note.. SAS doesn't open the registry hives for other user accounts on the system, so scans should be done from each user account.Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".From your regular user account..Download Attribune's ATF Cleaner and then SUPERAntiSpyware , Free Home Version. Save both to desktop ..DO NOT run yet.Open SUPER from icon and install and Update itUnder Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):Close browsers before scanning.Scan for tracking cookies.Terminate memory threats before quarantining.Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program. Recently, a Windows update arrived called Microsoft Security Essentials Client Update Package - KB2544035. Since then my computer started malfunctioning. Whenever, I try to install the update, everything goes fine, and then suddenly goes blank and the desktop returns (but the Windows update screen had closed). When I open Windows update, it shows that the aforesaid update is not installed. And when I try to open Microsoft Security Essentials shortcut on my desktop, the machine is not able to find it and asks to delete it. I cant even open Microsoft Security Essentials manually from Program files. Things return to normal on System Restore. But the Microsoft Security Essentials appears potentially unprotected and asks for a full system scan. But before the scan is complete the Microsoft Security Essentials screen closes and the desktop returns once again. And, once again, when I try to open Microsoft Security Essentials shortcut on my desktop, the machine is not able to find it.

This problem has occurred twice already, and Im very frustrated. I tried to full system scan in Safe Mode and that has not helped.

Please help.

So I questioned local Microsoft customer's service.

First, my OS is not single language package.

Then, I thick there might be some unrealized problem with in my laptop.

So I think I need to reinstall win10, but I don't have disk image.

Can I get my win10 install image?

My warranty date is still remaining...

How to add an input language to your PC
Step 1: Download the language.

Step 2: Set your display language.

If that's what failed, then you may download Win 10 at...
Get Win 10
But I wouldn't jump into a full re-install. Try a repair install first. Or even look for other options before that.

Hi @mlall Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see that you are looking for information on hp.system.package.metadata. I will be honest and tell you I don't know what that files does but I do not recommend deleting the file. It could be preinstalled software information and might have unintended consequences if you delete it.

I have been installing a number of hotfixes for Windows 7 using MSU files and the wusa.exe utility included in Windows. I thought it would be a good idea to generate separate log files for each update as it was installed since wusa.exe now supports this
option using /log:<file name>. However, the log files created do not seem to be regular text files or any other log file format that I immediately recognize. When opened in Notepad or Wordpad you can see that they contain a lot of additional binary data
which can't be read by a regular text viewer.
Does anyone know what format these log files are in? What tool should you use to read them?
