Cannot permanently change msconfig settings

Q: Cannot permanently change msconfig settings

On my Dell XP Pro, msconfig lists a number of applications (not services) from 3rd party vendors, such as HP and QWest, scheduled to launch at start-up. Several times, I've unchecked these items, clicked APPLY, and then re-started my system; nevertheless, when my system has finally rebooted, Windows Task Manager shows them running, and I have to eliminate them in Windows Task manager.

So it appears that somehow, there is some application somewhere that is reversing (i.e. ignoring) my (new) settings I try to establish in msconfig. Is anyone familiar with this problem?

I can figure out several ways of dealing with this problem, such as changing the names of these annoying applications (e.g. from application.exe to application.eze) so they cannot be found (therefore cannot launch), but I'd sure like to know what software it is on my machine that keeps overriding my choices. And also how to change the start-up menu permanently without changing the names of the relevant offending programs.

Preferred Solution: Cannot permanently change msconfig settings

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Cannot permanently change msconfig settings

msconfig is a diagnostic utility. If you want to permanently manage startup items you should use a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml).
Uncheck whatever you don't want started in that app and let's go from there.

hi,
you can modify the windows registry for this as well.

click start type regedit the navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\[Adapter ID]]

(Find the correct adapter you want to change on your machine, there may be multiple entries depending on the number of adopters you may have)

the right click and create a new REG_DWORD, name it MTU, set the value after that.

hope this helps

In Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1 64-bit I am not given the option to move files to the Recycle Bin. Instead, when I delete a file I am asked "Are you sure you want to permanently delete this file?"In the Recycle Bin properties for each hard drive partition I have not selected "Don't move files to the Recycle Bin" and I have check-marked "Display delete confirmation dialog."

I can't remember precisely when this started to happen, but I did install Update 1 recently. I don't know if that matters.

When I am typing, sometimes I get the character ? instead of ?. After doing some research, all you need to do is select the English(US) instead of English(Can) in the language bar. Apparently, it seems that this language setting only effects the individual software instead of all the software installed on your computer. So for example, if I changed this language setting in Word, this setting will not roll over to Notepad or Chrome or even the OS.

I am wondering if there is a way to permanently save the English(US) setting so it will apply to all of my software?

A:Change Language Permanently

If you go to Regional and Language Settings in the Control Panel, you should be able to set it to English (United States) so that all software defaults to this. Additionally, you can go to the "Keyboards and Languages" tab and click on "Change Keyboards" to ensure that English (US) is installed. If not, you can add it.

OS XP home Ed. Svs. Pk. 2. The Local Settings folder runs as a hidden folder (Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings) settings in the folder options under tools to see hidden files & sys. files will not open unhide this folder. The two ways I have found are, do a search open properties and uncheck hidden file box or type Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings into the address bar. I know the stock answer is this folder is hidden for a purpose and should not be messed with. In my mind that is a typical Bill Gates crap answer. I like to selectively check and delete history files and review Temp files. There has to be a registry key I'm not finding that I can add a 1 to that will unhide this folder on boot up.

There are a whole bunch of XP services that launch automatically when you start up Windoze. These can be turned off manually by using services.msc.

But I've found that at least some of these can not be turned off permanently. An example is Automatic Updates.

Does anyone know if it is possible to turn these off permanently? One obvious way would be to change the name of the service, and that's not hard to do, but there must be a "proper" way to do it. Anyone have any ideas?

A:How to permanently change Services that launch

Using Automatic Updates as in your example, if you right click the Service, Properties and set the Startup Type to Disabled and reboot, does that not keep it from starting again? If you disable Automatic Updates, you will then get an informational message about that, which you will also have to disable (if you want). If you have particular fussy ones, tell us which and maybe we can help. I don't think renaming is a good method.I have many disabled service too. I have really tried everything i can think of and researched so much for answers.
Please, i only formatted my computer 2 months ago and then this came out of the blue. I am about to start back at school and i dont want my computer to go bust. I need any help possible.
I wake up and i log on and what comes up is not what my profile I logged into looks like and so i figured that my comp had a quick lapse in ability like it had before that made it assume a temp profile because mine could not be found.
* So i log out and log back in. No fix. Open my comp check all connections. No fix. System Restore. No Fix.
* That's when i found out that i was in TEMP.ESM-01 login not Tarik but i clearly logged into Tarik so i ended up freakin thinking my files were gone. So then i checked and found that when i went to Tarik's docs through My computer it came up empty but when i go to Documents and Settings/Tarik/My docs its all there so "phew" i didn't lose anything but why am i not getting that profile to load?
* After looking at it all and doing some research i found out it has to do with roaming profiles yet i don't have a host network i connect to; i am the host. So finally i found something that may have fixed it and downloaded it from Microsoft called "User Profile Hive Cleanup Service".
* Didn't Work but what i did notice is that it creates and replaces the TEMP.ESM-01 Profile folder every time i log in with Tarik. So i guess it a profile that... Read more

Can someone tell me how I can permanently change the default font in Word Pad?

TVM

A:Change font permanently in Word Pad?

Hmm, you can use a trick as i think you can't change the default font in Wpad.

Create a rtf document with a "space", select the space, choose your font and size, save as your-template.rtf.
In properties, tick read only to avoid modifying it, be sur that rtf files open with Wpad.
Change your shortcuts to open Wpad so that they open your-template.rtf and that's it.

Hello all,

this is driving me nuts, also because of the fact that there seems to be no suitable information about that on the net.

I have a computer here that should connect to a WLAN using "WPA2 - Enterprise". For authentication, a computer certificate is used.

If I set the authentication method to "computer authentication" in properties, security settings, the connection is just established fine. However, after a few moments, the connection is terminated and the authentication method is re-set to "user-
or computer authentication".

This causes every connection attempt to fail with the message "A certificate is required for connection to [network name]".

If I then go to the properties of the network connection and set the authentication method to "computer authentication" again, the connection is again established for a few moments - until that setting is again "user- or computer authentication"
and the game starts over from the beginning :(

What is causing that setting to be reverted again and again? Why is my manual configuration not saved?

Thank you very much for all help in advance and kind regards,

I am trying to have my computer boot Linux by default, from an external hard drive, while my internal drive has Windows 10 on it. Unfortunately I cannot get it to work: Windows 10 boots automatically at every restart and cold start.

Steps I've taken so far:
The boot order I want is set and saved in BIOS. There's no uEFI on my computer.
Windows 10 fast startup option is disabled. I also disabled the hibernation option just in case.

Still, I can only get Linux to boot by going into BIOS every time and selecting the (already selected) external hard drive again. When I then try to mount the internal (Win 10) disk from within Linux, I get an error saying it cannot be mounted because Windows 10 is still using it.

Any ideas how to solve this and give full boot control back to BIOS?

anyone know how to change user variable permanently for TEMP and TMP path using script for every user profile?

A:change user variable permanently for TEMP and TMP

...which is OK because there is nothing to expand in "c:\temp", right?
If you wish to continue using %USERNAME% in those environment vars, you could use something like
set unvar = USERNAME
setx TEMP "c:\Users\%%unvar%%\temp"

which will give you REG_EXPAND_SZ along with "%USERNAME% in it.

I had problems with vista, so i created a new partition, installed a different version of vista, then formatted the original OS partition. (obviously i had no idea what i was doing, but thats beyond the point)
Now i have a problem with the new partition i created for vista.
The default drive on where to save things is C:
however, C: is my OS drive
how can i change it so that all files are downloaded to D: without manually entering it everytime?

Or, would simply changing the Drive letters work?
if so, how do it do it? Ive tried using the vista maintenance tools, but i get an error saying it cannot be changed because of files in use.

Or, should i get a new harddrive, remove the old drive, install a partition on it named c:, install vista on that. (i would assume the original vista disc i have has the ability to create a partition on it when booting from disc.. its preactivated)

Im not really looking for the easiest or cheapest way to do it. I have just googled the crap out of this, and im not really finding the info im looking for, because im not really sure what its called.
So any suggestions would be very helpful

How can I permanently change a single file's icon?

I have organized some backups as ISO files, and would like to have a different icon for each file.

I have created an .ICO for each file.

IconChanger worked great, but only while the program was installed. Once I had all the icons changed and thought I was through and uninstalled the program, all the icons went back to their original disc icon.

Is there a way to permanently change a single file's icon, so if I move it to another machine it will retain the icon?

Technically, yes, a "resource editor" can be used to alter icons embedded in executables. However, once you start haxx0ring an app, most software vendors would see that as a violation of their terms of use, which is why I won't provide further technical detail (I realise you're asking for entirely innocent reasons).

I can't imagine it would be worth your time though. It's just an icon, after all.

i have no idea why this works but it seems to, and so i wanted to know if there is a way to permanently set the priority of this process to above normal without having to manually adjust it every time i start my computer.

i should mention i tried downloading the program "Prio" which claims the ability to save settings on priorities but unfortunately it doesnt work with svchost.exe

does anyone know how to permanently change the priority of this process?

Hello Decorlady, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might consider giving Windows Live Mail a try instead. It is better in my opinion.

It supports Pop3, IMAP, HTTP website (EX: Hotmail) email, and is a lot more stable. Plus, WLM will minimize to a tray bar icon, checks spelling as you type messages, and has a separate Inbox for each email account. WLM will automatically import Windows Mail messages, accounts, and settings into it. Contacts will have to be manually imported from within WLM. (Tools, Contacts, File, Import, Address book for current Windows User.) To see the Menu bar, press ALT+M and check "Show all menus".

Hope this helps,

That's perfectly normal. These options are only intended for troubleshooting and program compatibility issues (rare). Providing that the checkboxes for both Number of processors: and Maximum memory: are both unchecked (i.e. don't have a tick in them), you shouldn't have an issue and your system should be using both the full amount of memory installed and all available CPU cores.

There is a software which often changes the proxy settings so I decided to config the internet settings registry right to reject the proxy settings. But When I decided to delete this software and return the rights back, I suddenly found that I can not change
the proxy settings manually!
The detail is that I change the auto proxy url, to let my pc use a pac file and I don't want any softwares to change. However, when I decided to give the rights back and try to change the url back, it never success, and even the same when i'm sure I have
cleared this url in the whole registry, but it back, as it never changes!
I check the registry rights twice or more to make sure that the rights has given back, just like it originally should be. But it never works.
So the result is I have to clear and reinstall the WINDOWS 10 AGAIN!
Never should you save such information both in registry and somewhere I don't know! Or you should let these stuffs out of the ** registry!

That tweak you are trying to do is pointless. So there is really no point in doing it. Windows is already using your CPU to the maximum it can. There is no setting in Windows that will allow you to go beyond the capabilities of the hardware.

It being broken is a blessing I say. *nods* You never actually need it. All of those settings in there are for testing and developing.

Hi.
I was changing some settings in msconfig yesterday. The parameters I changed is:
Timeout: 0
No GUI boot: Checked
Number of processors: 8 (I think this was unnecessary since it's already booting up using all cores/threads. But it shouldn't cause a error even if I changed it manually.
Now, when I'm trying to boot up my PC I'm just receiving a BSOD. I've tried to use both "Normal mode", Safe mode and the last working configuration, but none works. I've also tested to do system repair but it just gives me some kind of error that it couldn't be completed. Sadly, I've disabled the System Backup/Restore, so I can't do that either!

Right now I've started the command prompt from the "System Recovery Options" and I think this is the only way for me to fix this.

So what I wonder now, is if there's any way to reset the settings in msconfig to the default through the command prompt, or maybe there's another way I can try to fix this? I don't feel like re-installing Windows once again.

Best regards,
Flaxe

Why in God's name did you do this??

That was likely a fatally wrong assumption...

What were you trying to achieve with this? The timeout has no effect unless you multi-boot and have a boot menu, and No GUI boot only means no graphical moving bar during startup.

EDIT: You might be able to fix this by editing the Windows registry offline. Look for the settings you changed in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment

In particular, you'll want to change NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS back to 2 (assuming you have a dual-core CPU).

Hi everyone, thanks for looking.
Im running into a particular problem that I cant seem to find the reasons or the settings.

I watch HBO GO (i have a valid subscription) on my Windows 7 Home laptop and use an HDMI cable to connect my TV.

Scenerio 1:
If I leave the close the lid power option on hibernate, I must leave the laptop open and, when I connect the HDMI the TV, it becomes my monitor and I view as the monitor and watch anything full screen no problem.

Scenerio 2:
I change the power option on the lid close to "do nothing". When the HDMI cable is hooked up, if the laptop is open it uses the laptop display, if its closed it displays through the HDMI/TV. This is perfect and exactly what I want.
I can watch as the monitor no problem HOWEVER, if I choose full screen, I get gray borders and the "Full Screen" is not full and just centered.

I can not for the life of me figure out why and Im going crazy.
Does anyone know why the power option would have an effect on this and what settings I could change?

Many Thanks in Advance!!!

Max

A:External display settings change when Power options change?

Check to see what resolution your laptop's display is at, what the external TV resolution is when you connect it to your laptop, and MAYBE what resolution the videos you're watching are. This just sounds like a resolution issue. If the TV is at a larger resolution than your laptop's resolution, change the TV's resolution to the size your laptop is at. Then try watching a video to see what happens. Hope this helps.

It's like the option to change it has been locked away. The page is currently set for: whatsfind.com/route.html. It redirects to a site called "Qwest" something or other.

I've also noticed that my computer has slowed down--especially the Internet. Maybe my resources are being drained? I can't even check my processes--when I try to press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, nothing happens. I tried to go into "msconfig" from the Run menu in order to go to Safe Mode, but I just got an error that read: "Windows cannot find 'msconfig'."

Last night it worked fine; this morning was when the problems began. I couldn't boot in Safe Mode, so I unplugged the network to scan with Windows Defender, Spybot, Ad-Aware, and the like.

The scans found nothing. I tried to use PandaScan, but it wouldn't download. I also scanned with HouseCall.

This is my HijackThis scan. I hope you can help.

You need to download Service Pack 3 as soon as possible.
It's been out for about 4 years and you are missing out on Security fixes etc.
Windows XP Service Pack 3.
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=24

Download SP3 - once installed - go to Windows updates page - let it scan and then install all needed updates

Then post the latest Hjt log 2.04.
Hijack this 2.04

Also post the uninstall log from Hjt log
Start HiJackThis.
At the bottom right - Other Stuff
Click on Config > Misc Tools.
Click > Open Uninstall Manager.
Click > Save List.
Save the uninstall list file on your desktop.
It will then open in Notepad.
Click Edit > Select All > Copy-and-Paste the uninstall list in the reply box.

I am using window 7 and I tried to upgrade my microsoft office 2007 to 2013. Dont know why since I installed Microsoft office 2013, my PC only can turned on in safe mode, I cant turn on in normal boot anymore.

When I tried to run or uninstall Microsoft office, the error message showed

Blockquote

The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. Contact your support personnel to verify that the windows Installer service is properly registered.

Then I search online, someone said we can change configuration in msconfig.exe . So I tried to do so the setting like >> How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista

After my next reboot, my PC just like dead and I cant boot the PC anymore.

Any idea??

You can't uninstall in safe mode.

Hi all,

We have a Windows XP Home installation and the main account is set as an administrator account. For some reason when we log into this account the command prompt window is displayed, but not with a c prompt and there is nothing we can do to exit it (i.e unable to type exit)

On looking at the startup options in msconfig I noticed the following, which is what's causing the command prompt window to open:

Startup Item: svchost

Command: C:\windows\system32\drivers\svchost.exe
Location: HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrenVersion\Run

So using the account that is in the administrators group I tried to deselect it but when clicking Ok or Apply I get this message:

Error: An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change the service. You man need to log on using and Administrator account the make the specified changes.

But I am using an Admin account...!?!?

So I tried rebooting into safe mode, then as the 'Official' Admin account to change it but when I login as the Administrator the svchost isn't in the start up options?

There are a couple of other accounts that are just standard accounts and they don't have the svchost on their startup.

Any ideas of how I can change this?

Thanks in advance

Hi All,

I have noticed in my fresh clean install of Windows 10 Pro, when running MSCONFIG that my system is set to Selective startup. If I select Normal startup and click Apply, it immediately defaults back to Selective startup again.

I also notice that one service under the Services tab is not selected - Geolocation Service. Here too, when I select it and click Apply, the check box is cleared again.

I have not disabled any start up programs. Only thing I did was uninstall MS Apps Get Office and Get Skype.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

A:Cannot change MSCONFIG from Selective to Normal Start Up

Mine is also set to selective startup, seems normal. And for services the services.msc tool is far better to configure them.

Hello there, I really need help here..

I've booted into safe mode in windows 8.1 by setting the safe mode option in msconfig..

However, when I booted into safemode i realized that I've forgot my password because i usually use a pincode.

How to I get it out of safe boot again? - I've tried to access command prompt, but everything needs that password.

Please help, is there any way to force it to boot up normally again? ;(

- Thanks in advance

A:msconfig boot settings sat to safe mode, forgot password

When it reboots into normal mode, won't you still need the password?

Do you have the ability to boot into the recovery environment using the install media and not recovery media?

I have the HP beats special edition laptop. Processor model is: AMD A10-7300 APU with Radeon R6 Graphics 1.9 GHz, 4 MB cache. Is this processor safe to change this setting on?

A:Is it safe to change CPU core setting in msconfig on HP laptop?

Use Task Manager, Performance tab and click on Open Resource Moniter at the bottom, see how many of the 4 cores are showing. Could be if all 4 cores are showing you may not want to limit the CPU to a lesser number of cores which I've found will usually affect performance.

In safe mode open msconfig and uncheck safe mode to normal mode. You can startup msconfig either by opening run and msconfig, or open CMD and type msconfig.

Hi! I had a malware and decided to run malwarebytes anti-malware in safe mode. The problem was that my computer took too long to boot up before it lets me choose my operating system (i also have linux mint installed, just FYI) and I didn't want to wait 10 minutes just to miss hitting F8 so I changed msconfig to automatically load in Safe mode, so i went ahead and checked that. It booted up fine in safe mode, malarebytes found nothing (I also ran this in normal windows right before...again just FYI).

Now the problem is that I cant get out of safe mode. I tried changing msconfig back but it wouldnt save the settings and the check box that I had checked on normal windows (on the second tab) was unchecked and wouldnt even let me interact with it. I even tried selecting 'normal mode' on the first tab. Anything I did to it would result in a message saying 'windows configuration could not be saved' or something (I'm at work, I don't remember exactly what the message was but I will post it later) after I clicked ok or apply.

I also waited and pressed F8 to select how I wanted to boot and went to normal mode and it still went into safe mode. I tried repairing too but it didn't even find an operating system on my computer, but that probably has to do with the fact that I use linux to boot up.

Any ideas on what to try next?

Thanks in advance
