Unable to open or copy some files after virus

Q: Unable to open or copy some files after virus

I have a computer that was infected and cleaned by someone else so I don't know what was on it but now many of the document files cannot be coppied or opened. If I try to copy files I get the error
cannot copy Access denied make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not in use
I have taken ownership of the drive and most of the files will copy or open but several hundred will not

Preferred Solution: Unable to open or copy some files after virus

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Seems like the infection(s) arent completely gone... id try to run the following that you can download here at bleepingcomputer:
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Junkware removal tool
after you run those scans, post the logs from them. after posting them, google ESET online scanner and do a scan with that, then post the logs from it. all that may take care of your problem,. but if not, their are many other things we can try

There is a widely reported problem of some jpg files displaying thumbnails which cannot be opened and reported to be unrecognised or corrupt while other jpg files open normally. I think this problem may also relate to other types of files.

I have experienced this widely reported problem of image files (not all) being reported as corrupt or unable to be opened by various programs. Why some and not all? I tried so many methods to recover my images by following numerous suggestions from so many forums. None worked. Copying the so-called corrupt files to another disc and trying to open them on another computer didn't work either.

Then, I had a sneaky thought that it may have something to do with Shadow Copy services. Previously, I had tried to backup my computer, during which the process creates a shadow copy of the files to be backed-up, but the backup failed. I retried the process, but the backup failed again and reported an error while trying to read the shadow copy.

I checked the number of shadow copies on my hard disc of which there were about 6. I decided to clean up the hard disc using System Tools > Disk Cleanup > Clean up system files > More Options > System Restore and Shadow Copies > Clean up > Delete > OK > Delete Files.

Voilą !!!

All images reappeared.

I acquired the Win 7 antivirus 2012 virus/trojan/annoyance. I went into safe mode with networking, did a full scan with my antivirus prog (Vipre). It found and removed Trojan.Win32.Generic.pak!cobra which included a temp file in AppData, and nqw.exe.
I ran rkill and malwarebytes- Malwarebytes quarrantined 2 items ( I dont know how to see what they were)

After all that, I am unable to open exe files. I get a popup box asking me to choose which program I want to use to open the program. I CAN right click everything and run as administrator.

I do not know if it is relevant, but about a month ago I had the data recovery virus. AFter getitng rid of that and using the Unhide, I was unable to open anything- I had read only permissions on everything. I created a new user and fiddled around with permissions and got everything working, but since then the computer has been real slow- there might have still been pieces of that leftover.

Here is the DDS file- It's all greek to me I didn't do the GMER file thing- I can if need be but I wasn't sure if I had a 64 bit system?
Thanks, and Happy Holidays!

I'm currently running in Windows 98 SE, My excel 2000 is currently infected by the Toraja.Gen virus, which can easily be cleaned by any Anti Virus software, but afterwards I'm unable to open any Excel related files.

A Brief Description of the Toraja.Gen Virus taken from the Symantec Web Site:
O97M.Toraja.Gen is a macro virus, which infects Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel documents. In Word it infects the Normal.dot template, and in Excel it contaminates the \XLStart folder with an infected Excel workbook. Many standard menu functions are overridden, making them inaccessible.
It infects the Normal.dot file (Microsoft Word) or inserts a copy of the infected workbook in the \XLStart folder with the file name Start12.xls.

I already tried cleaning with McAfee Anti-Virus (Updated everyday) 3 times just in case, I also already tried uninstalling, reboot, then re-installing my Microsoft Office, but to no avail. The Excel program keeps asking me that the Start12.xls is not found everytime I tried opening a file. The only way I could open a file is by infecting my computer with the virus again. Could anybody help me out?

A:Infected by Toraja.Gen Virus: unable to open any Excel related files

After cleaning the virus, did you rename the normal.dot template normal.old or anything to force a new one to be created.

And if you run regedit navigate to this key:

do you see in the Right hand pand the Value name: Xlstart

And the Value Data: XLSTART

Did you delete Start12.xls from the xlstart folder? You might also want to search the registry for any references to Start12.xls and substitute XLSTART

If no luck, I'll move you to the Business Applications forum; I'm not really familiar with Excel and you might get better help there

After a virus messing up my computer, the only solution to fixing it is to reinstall windows, however i have many files that i would like to copy to a CD so i don't lose them, the problem is that since the virus i can't copy or paste, i can't drag files, so i can't move them, and i can't use windows explorer or nero to burn files to a cd, as none of these work anymore. (reinstalling nero also didn't work)

Could anyone suggest a program or something that i could download so that i can burn my files to cd?

Anybody, help! Quite desperate as this is affecting my work.

Sometime ago, I installed AGV as there seemed to be lil bugs in my comp that Norton could not get. AGV managed to detect and delete these bugs, but not all problems were solved. Norton's subscription was up and I was still quite peeved about Norton's inability to help...so I uninstalled it. Since then, there were more problems...

1) I'm unable to run help from Start...or msconfig from Start/Run or system restore. The error message is that it can't find the file. Even when I go to explorer to double-click the file directly, it still won't run.

2) I'm unable to open ANY file with MS word or powerpoint. It would say that the file is unavailable. It would also prompt me to replace existing normal.dot file. I'm unable to do the detect and repair, it would say error 1706...I do not have the installation CD with me anymore!

3) I'm unable to run any online virus scan (Trend, Panda...) even after I made changes to the security settings to allow for ActiveX.

4) I'm tried to reinstall Norton, but it can't run. It says 'CFGWIZ.EXE - Unable to locate component. . . . cctrust.dll was not found.'

I do run Spybot, Adaware, AGV, Winaso regularly.

Please help...thanks!

I recently downloaded the SP2 upgrade for XP and am no longer able to copy files, most notably image type files (.JPEG) and also MS Word/Excell files (.doc, .xls) to a CD using the native XP copy function. I haven't realy tried to copy other file types. SOME files will copy but many will not. The message received is " Windows encountered an error when trying to copy this folder. What do you want Windows to do? " Looked on Microsoft pages but was unable to find any discussion or fixes there. Any suggestions? Where to start looking for the problem?

A:Unable to copy files to cd after SP2 upgrade on XP

Interesting, the only remotely close documentation is for some types of .doc or rtf files.

I've made the registry edit and for SOME .doc files (not all) I am still left with this error:

Microsoft Word 97 Conversion
unable to load graphics conversion filter. Continue with document conversion?Click to expand...

Hit yes long enough and eventually the text portion of the document will open, but without the graphics.

I don't seem to have a problem copying normal jpegs though.

Ok this has been going on for months. I initially had a problem with java after installing a SP2 update for IE. And eventually reinstalled XP, that didn't correct the issue and then I had to get a new product code because I was in the "you have 30 days to activate" loop even though my copy of XP was already activated...

So called Microsoft, got new product key and started to install again. This is when I first got the "Unable to copy files" error. I tried 2 different copies of XP but got the same issue, with the same files, with each disk.

I've talked to Microsoft for hours, and finally had a guy tell me it was my motherboard (now this is after having swapped out my memory with the manufacturer). I just received my replacement board (M7NCD by Biostar) and I am still getting the same error.

The gist is that at the dsound3d.dll, I start to get "unable to copy file" errors. I attempt to retry the copy, which works occasionally, but eventually I get an error (normally a memory error)... Microsoft had said that even with those errors, it wasn't my memory but my motherboard that was the issue...

Other info: swapped out CD-Rom drive, changed FSB speeds (per motherboard manufacturer request) and the previously mentioned attempts.

Can anyone help me, because I'm going nuts here

A:Unable to copy files off of my external drive

From what I can read from the SMART results, the drive seems to need more than the usual time to fully spin up; it has a few reallocated sectors, which means that the drive has found read/write/verification errors and has moved the data to the spare area. There seem to be some partial failures in the mechanical positioning system. It could be nothing, but the seek time performance is low which could be a sign of problems in the mechanical subsystem, meaning your drive most likely has a mechanical problem. It also has many spin start attempts.

I believe these issues, resulting in a mechanical failure of the drive, are the culprit for the problem you're having with transferring your files.

My advise would be to take the drive to a professional and see if it could be repaired so that you can copy paste your videos on your own. Otherwise, you may need to turn to a data recovery company.

Good luck!

Lol. That's some nice illegal-sounding file names you have there.

As long as this is 'any old random file' and perfectly legal, then it seems some program has locked your files. Try a restart.

Regarding 'not found' error: the files may be split up, Find the .mkv file and put it in same place.

Hi there,
my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems.

Before we move on, please read the following points carefully.
First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.
Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.
If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.
Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.

I did try another word file on another USB drive, it says write protected. How to solve this problem? I did try this method:

However, this method formats the drive which I don't want to happen. Also, while following the instructions in the youtube video, I got stuck when it came to formatting the drive. It says the drive is protected.

I then took the USB drives to my windows 7 laptop and it works, so there must be something wrong with Windows 8 and not the USB drives.

Any ideas?

I suggest that you...remove both of the programs you mentioned....then run the sfc /scannow command and the chkdsk /r command.
Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons.  Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.
Relevant info per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Registry :
“The Windows registry stores all application settings in one logical repository (but a number of discrete files) and in a standardized form.  The registry contains important configuration information for the operating system, for installed applications as well as individual settings for each user and application. A careless change to the operating system configuration in the registry could cause irreversible damage, so it is usually only installer programs which perform changes to the registry database during installation/configuration and removal.  If a user wants to edit the registry manually, Microsoft recommends that a backup of the registry is performed before the change.  Editing the registry is sometimes necessary when working around Windows-specific issues e.g. problems when logging onto a domain can be resolved by editing the registry.  The Windows registry can be edited manually using programs such as regedit.exe, although these tools do not expose some of registry'... I don't know if this is related or not, but I have two problems that quite possibly started at the same time.

Firstly, I cannot drag files or copy them. If I try to drag they just don't move, if I try to copy nothing happens. There is no error message or anything like that.

When I start up my computer I get a message saying something went wrong and the computer will automatically shut down again. I can't remember the exact message and can't reboot just now to check the specifics, but hopefully the info I have given means something to someone as it is.

Can anyone help with either issue? I've tried searching Google but have had no luck fixing either yet.

To my knowledge I haven't installed anything recently, besides some automatic updates (I don't think any for Windows recently), Hamachi and Risk II. I formed a virtual LAN with someone using Hamachi so it's perhaps possible I got a virus from them, but they say they don't have these problems themself.

copy them to his desktop. from server B but not from server A. Server A is the one assigned to him because server B is being pre-seeded for DFS and is in a different office anyway.

The problem is only with PDF files. He can open and copy any other files. And it's only on his Windows XP machine. His Windows 7 machine works just fine (he can copy and open PDF files from server A).

The two servers (Windows 2016) are set up identically as far as NTFS permissions. The only difference is that server A is set up in DFS while server B is being pre-seeded before being added to DFS.

DFS namespace type is: domain (Windows Server 2008 mode).

The XP machine had no problem under server A when the DFS namespace type was Server 2000 mode, but I'm not sure that would cause the problem.

On win xp pro, sp3 I believe.
I had a virus. Ran several virus/malware checkers several times in a row from widows, but it didn't seem to fix it. Stuck in an Avira rescue disk, and it found & renamed several files.

Unfortunately, the nvata.sys file seems to have been infected, and without this windows won't boot. At all, not even minimally.

I have a backup of my c: drive thats not that old on a usb external hd, but as I said, the computer won't boot so I can't get to the hd. And I don't have a setup disk to use to even make a bootable cd from another windows machine, bartpe or the like. The other machines I have access to (a vista and a win 7) don't have setup disks (or setup files on disk) to make one either.
I found a dos 6.22 iso but I don't think that will allow me access to anything usb.

So, aside from buying a new win xp pro setup disk, or finding a friend who has one (which has turned up nothing so far) are there options I'm missing to be able to copy the file from backup to c:?
(and I don't know linux well enuf to use the avira command line to get it either)
Thank you for the help!

p.s. I probably should ask where in my system I can find my key. I might need it, non?
Notice I said 'my system' and 'my key'. It's a perfectly legitimate system, it's just that Dell kinda 'forgot' to send me the actual disk when I bought it a few years ago. Even tho I asked. Just wish I woulda foll... Read more

I have seen all the answers to previous queries but it is still not helping me - possibly because I am a senior/senile citizen! Last week I uninstalled IE6 and now I am running with OE5 ad IE6 and Windows 98SE! I am unable to find any "application", maybe not the right word, which indicates it is Outlook Express. I have tried the re-register via run option but nothing happens. I think I am in trouble. Could someone please help me without using tech jargon. Thank you so very much.

You should be able to open the .txt file with Wordpad. You may want to try the "CHM File Association Fix" at the link below which also has a "TXT File Association Fix". Instructions are on the page.

All the .exe files on the computer cannot be opened. If I right click on the program, there is no open link.

I managed to open Firefox by right clicking a .bmp file, and open with: Firefox. Firefox gave me an error but opened up anyway. I did the same thing to open up paint.

Whenever I double click on the .exe file, the icon becomes a lighter shade than those around it.

When I try to use a shortcut to get to the program, I get this:

A:unable to open pdf files

Get rid of Adobe Reader. Close all your browsers so the plugins will be removed, too, and uninstall it.

Then, download and install (with browsers closed) the Foxit PDF reader. It is small, fast, reliable, doesn't need umpteen updates, and works.

Free, small, stable PDF readers (some allow limited editing):

Haihaisoft PDF Reader
Foxit PDF Reader
PDF Xchange Viewer
Dirk Paehl's PDF Viewer (Requires GhostScript 7.03 or higher)

Hi, I recently removed a virus from my computer. It was typical malware. It installed a program called Windows Police Pro, a fake anti-virus program. I'm pretty sure there is still traces of a virus on this computer because I am unable to open .exe files. It will either say error application not found or it will open the dialog box to choose which program I want to open the file with. I've tried using tutorials which save files as .reg and opening them but it gives me an error saying 'Unable to access registry'. I am able to run some programs as an administrator by right clicking the icon but it dosen't work for all. Anyway, here is a fresh hijack this log of the computer.

I have an external HDD on which I have backed up 15G of Data. I wish to retrieve some Pictures from this Backup but when I try to open it in order to restore these pictures I cannot find a programme to open it with. I do have Windows NT but can't seem to get it to open with .bkf.

A:.bkf files unable to open

Hello & Welcome to Tech Guy Forum.

Which version of Windows?
Which SP?

You have to restore them. You cannot open a backup job in the same way you can open a folder you have copied to a disk.

You will have to use Windows' backup utility to restore the files; or a different program if you did not use Windows' backup utiliity to create the .bak file.

That's why I recommend using Acronis True Image [ www.acronis.com ] and clone the HDD.

I am NOT a vendor for Acronis. I am a user.

Hello all, this is my first post and I hope I will make my self clear to you.

I am using Windows XP and a malware hit my system. It is "windows Antivirus Pro" 3 days ago.

Now some of the files which I modifies after its attack turned into green in color and I am unable to open it. I am also unable to run any .exe files as well as any command from RUN like regedit or some thing else.

I have downloaded "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" and scanned my HDD with the help of another system. Yet those files are GREEN in color and I cannot open it.

Can some one please tell me what to do with those files (there are many like .xls .doc .pdf ....)

Thanks in advance.

I have tried the .exe registry fix that is available, but since it is an exe file, no luck as i get a message: exefix_cu.reg is not a registry script you can only import binary files. I have tried finding the AV.exe file/proccess that people have mention, but it is not listed in task manager. If anyone can help me, it would be appreciated.

The situation has gotten worse. I have started renaming the files to remove the ".block" and none of the files work with their original extensions.
anyone with ideas how to recover the files? thanks.
