CD Drive Faillure

Q: CD Drive Faillure

I have an intergrated laptop cd/dvd player and burner. Its about 2 years old, and has now stopped working. The last time I used it, about 2 weeks ago, nothing was wrong, but tonight, it fails to read anything, including the drive cleaner. I've already tried as many of the troubleshooter soluations as I can without the documentation or direct internet access. Every time I try playing a cd/dvd it makes one of two sets of looping, mechanical sounds.
I'm running on XP standard, an acer travelmate 2700. All suggestions are welcome!!

Preferred Solution: CD Drive Faillure

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: CD Drive Faillure

Try rebooting. If you have since, ignore this suggestion.

Try a CD/DVD (pref both) that you know for a fact work in another PC. Maybe try and play a DVD that works in a DVD player on a TV?

Hi,I have tried to upgrade win7 home premium to win 10, but it have failled twice with error. After that I have searched what was wrong and founded out this:I do not know why those errors exist!Thank you for your help!

A:win 10 upgrade faillure

Kyrinia The images you posted are NOT displaying in the forum, so you would have to provide the details of the problems in text forum for them to be understood. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the problem you're up against is that Microsoft only supplies drivers with the most basic functionality, and what you really need for FULL functionality is the specialized drivers written for the specific hardware found in your HP PC -- and unfortunately, there are no HP Win10 drivers for your PC. HP only guarantees Win10 compatibility for machines made after August, 2013. HP does not have any schedule indicating when, or IF, they will be producing drivers for the older machines. This means that your PC is most likely NEVER going to be fully functional under Win10 because the drivers it needs for full functionality simply do not exist! My own advice is NOT to press forward with the Win10 Upgrade -- free is not necessarily better.  I upgrade 5 PCs from Win7 to Win10 and not only did all of them have serious problems afterward, two of them were reverted back to Win7 -- at the owners' requests. Their view (which I share) is that an older OS version where everything works is vastly superior to a newer OS version where some things are "broken" -- and will never be fixed!Good Luck

@Benf15 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but according to HP, that error message means that your primary storage drive (i.e., hard drive) is in imminent danger of failing. While it could last for several more days, it could also fail immediately! The more you use the drive, the less likely you'll be able to recover anything on it.So, there are four issues to address here:1) Data Recovery2) Drive replacement3) Recovery Media4) System restoration---------- Data Recovery ----------Your best bet for recovering data now is to do the following:1) Remove the hard drive from the PC2) Purchase a USB-to-Hard Driver adapter kit3) Download and install this utility on a working PC: http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/recover_data_in_3_steps_with_minitool_power_data_recovery_free_...4) Connect the old drive to the working PC5) Run the data recovery utility to see what can be retrieved from the old drive. If that tools does not find what you need, an alternative is Recuva: http://www.piriform.com/recuvaAnd, if that does not work well, the best tool out there is this one, but only the trial version is free: http://www.file-recovery.com/---------- Drive Replacement ----------The drive will need to be replaced. When you remove it, you will see that it is a 2 1/5 inch laptop SATA drive. You can replace this with any similar laptop drive of the same capacity or larger.---------- Recovery Media ----------Once you have the replacement dri... Hi, i'm new here at SevenForums, and i have a little problem that is driving me crazy.

So, a friend of mine has an Asus K52J with W7, last week when he was working it happeared a blue screen then i think he tried to repair it himself by using the System Repair and it didn't find any error and then he made a reboot. Now every time he turns the laptop on the SR starts working giving allways the same information. No errors but can't even start up windows.

What can i do to help me since i've allready tried a lot of things and nothing appears to work. I have a Bootable CD from ASUS but i think the CD-ROM isn't working because it makes a lot of noize and nothing happens too.

May i be able with my laptop to copy that bootable cd into an usb flash? or may i do something else? help me PLZ

A:System Repair Faillure

Hello K0M and welcome mate the fact that the opto drive is making nasty noises would make me take it straight back for a warranty check.

An option is a factory default that is if you don't mind starting from scratch you can take the machine back to as it came out of the factory / shop / dealer etc

When you power up as soon as the Asus logo starts up hit the F9 key it will prompt you through the install process. Personally I just keep a rhythmical tapping up on the factory default key for whatever machine I do it on. Different brands different keys and as far as I am aware the F9 is the Asus one.

One thing is for sure once you have it up and running - make a rescue / back up disk!!

Love my notebook and have restored it a couple of times but unfortunately I never seem to get it back to 100%, my bad. Runs fine once started and rarely shut windows down completely so startup is ok. Windows wants to update, and this is where the problems always start. Upon restarting it goes bluescreen. run diagnostics and usually everything is fine and after a few tries it starts and then it's fine. This time it's found an error on the hard drive. BIOS keeps telling me to go to various HP pages but when I go there they're al 404. The info I am getting is exactly as this: SMART Check : PASSEDLong DST : FAILED FAILURE ID : UE7RAF-6L48JE-XD6XOK-619903PRODUCT ID - A1L17AV HARD DRIVE 1 Can anyone here shed any light on this please?

My laptop is only about 4 month old (HP Notebook, serial #5CD4340HSP), but yesterday it quit twice with the message about a driver power state failure and had to restart. It is my second computer that I use only about once a week, so it's not like I have overused it already and don't even have many programs on it.

I'm not sure what to do about this problem. I did follow the instructions and have run the SF debug tool. File is attached.

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as
a separate drive but I find that annoying and would prefer to just have my primary C: drive show up with all of the available space.  I formatted the extra space and made it available separately as drive G hoping that I could EXPAND drive C but that option
is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?

I have a Dell Dimension 4700 running XP Service Pack 3. My original Western Digital Drive was dying. This drive was the boot drive and listed first in "setup" (after hitting F2) There was also a 300GB Maxtor SATA drive already installed which I used for data storage -- not bootable. It was listed 2nd in "setup".

Ultimately the WD Drive wouldn't boot. I cleared the 300GB Maxtor and did a clean install Win XP from manuf. disks WITHOUT removing the WD - Drive 1 first. (I had hoped to remove some data I hadn't yet back up

I tried rebooting BUT if both disks were set to "On" in "setup - F2" the system would NOT boot. If Disk 1 (WD Drive) was turned off the system would boot fine. I removed the "boot partition" on Disk 1 but if both drives were turn on - no go.

I have now replaced the defective drive (WD) with a Maxtor SATA II/300 (1 TB).

The boot drive (300GB Maxtor) is the "last" drive on the SATA interface cable and the new drive (1 TB) is on the second to last connector.
Still, if the blank, new drive is turned on in "setup - F2" the system won't boot. If off, system boots. (I want to use the 1 TB drive solely for data storage).

It seems the SATA controller refuses to recognize the bootable drive if both drives are active. All I can think of is this is due to the 300GB being "Drive 2" in my original system and still listed that way in "setup". There is NO ability to c... Read more

I recently got a new hard drive. The first thing I did was create a new partition. After that, I copied the contents of my C drive to the new partition using HDCopy. Your pc is still booting to the Z drive it seems. You might want to try just backing up your stuff and doing a format so that the new drive does not contain your system root.

I want to prepare a factory fresh drive so that I can use it to save backup images. Soon I will have a second drive that will only be used to store data files. Neither drive will ever be used for the installation of an operating system. From what I've read, I see no advantage to having more than a single partition on either drive. I know I want to use NTFS.

This should be straightforward. I'm finding it is not. I cannot formulate a search that points me to the right tutorial or thread. Either I get hundreds of options to consider or, if I try to narrow the options, no answer is found.

Please point me to the right discussion. Perhaps the answer will help others who come after me, too.

A:Format & Partition New Drive to Use as a Backup Drive or Storage Drive

Do you know how to make a partition and format a drive?

You can do it all in Windows Disk Management.

You don't need to do anything special to the drive just because it is going to store images.
Treat it like any other drive.

Format it with a single partition.

Store your image files on it. Use a folder structure if you want to---perhaps naming a folder something like "Macrium image of C partition, 060714" so you know the date of the image.

Nor do you need to use a separate drive just for image storage.

Make your images and store them like ordinary data. Back up the images just like you'd back up any other important data file. That's what they are: important data.

I have just finished a pc build with a SSD to be used as the boot/OS drive and a secondary 2 HDD setup in raid 0 for storage.

First I started with the SSD only and installed win7, applied all the updates etc. At this point the system has rebooted at least half a dozen times with no issue.
Next I set up the 2 HDD in raid 0, initialized it with disk manager and everything is looking good. But as soon as I reboot the system, upon startup the system can't find a os. Using the windows install disc, I go into the recovery console and discover that the boot drive which was C:\ is now E:\ and the storage drive which was E:\ is now C:\.
The os files on the boot drive seem to be all there. It's just in the wrong drive path. Using the recovery console I switched back the drives to their proper places, but then on startup I got the error 'bootmgr is missing' at this point I gave up, nuked the drives and started from scratch only to get thing again once I initialized the HDD and rebooted.
I am sure I have overlooked some stupid detail somewhere. Can anyone help me figure out where I went wrong?

A:Windows 7 has swapped my drive paths with my boot drive and sec. drive

To be honest a recovery drive won't give you much space (10 GB or so?). You are better off with a USB external HDD and move your less accessed data to the external.

Subject: cloned a 80G HDD to a 128G USB Flash stick

hi all,

happy holidays, etc.

this is an old issue, yet i am still working on it

in July 2013; I cloned my 80G HDD onto a 128G USB Flash stick

in Sept. 2013; I had a data loss...

so, I thought to recover my data using this 128G clone...

I put this 128G Flash stick into my computer, and it showed up as a Local drive, yet was inaccessible and with its LED flashing incessantly...
{this was after, I treated this 128G USB flash stick as if it were a whole computer, and I then attempted to use/misused Win Vista's EasyTransfer program in a failed attempt to restore my lost data :(}

I later ran CHKDSK /f /r on it, and Chkdsk repaired and/or deleted about 7 "attributes" files

after which, this 128G Flash, only shows up as a Removable Storage(not Local) drive.. and remains locked/data inaccessible yet without the flashing LED

the USB drive, when I clicked on it in My Computer, would give the/an error message "Insert drive into H: drive"... Insert? a drive? into my tiny USB drive? which isn't even a CD or DVD drive? ... I tried all the fre... Read more

Okay, here is a pic of my hard disks.

My backups go into my Recovery Drive, and it is nearly full. I repeatedly uninstall prgrams that I don't need, and delete old backups. Why is it still full? How do I make more space? My OS drive is so BIG, but I have next to nothing in it! Are backups supposed to be going into C drive?

A:Recovery Drive almost full: Should backups be in D drive or in the C drive?

Not to worry. The recovery is probalby just restore points. As you need more space the oldest point is deleted and a new one made. If you want to make space. Turn off the System Restore, deleting all points. Then make a new point, you will need it in case of problems.

I was wanting to use windows 7 backup, so I went and got another 500 gig hard drive (WD), I connected the HD and powered up the computer and that's all I did! Device manager showed the new drive and the primary drive! However the computer did not show the new WD drive, . The new drive was not formatted so with the help of a friend using partdisk I formatted the new WD drive, the new drive now shows up in computer as drive G. But now I also have a drive F, and its 100MB in size. (see screen shot)

What have I done? and how can I fix it?

I am attempting to install Win7 in an Inspiron 1545 with a new SATA hard drive that was purchased. When i insert the drive, I get "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found." I have verified the drive is not showing in the BIOS, I've already attempted to reseat the drive several times. In addition, I've attempted to load the chipset drivers, SATA drivers, etc from Dells website, the drive still does not show in the OS install when booting to DVD or in bios.
I dont believe it to be an issue with the new drive, as I plugged the new drive into another model Dell laptop and it recognizes the drive fine in BIOS, also I can still boot to the previous hard drive in this laptop without issue when i plug it back in.
Is there a specific driver, etc that I need to use for the drive to be recognized or other thoughts people have?

A:Inspiron 1545- replacing hard drive, new SATA drive not found "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found

This is strange - either the new hard drive has a rare compatibility issue with your onboard controller (I use a 500Gbyte in my 1545 without probs)) or it is a mechanical problem.I would take a close look at the physical dimensions and compare your original hdd with the new one.Watch the video (even though it's about a 1525 (similar to an 1545) and an SSD hdd) -  go to 2:20

For anyone who can help.

My name is David Roy. and i have a Dell Dimension 4600. In this dimension i have a dual drive CD-RW on the bottom and DVD-Rom on the top. (HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8483B) and (Samsung DVD-ROM SD-616E)

Yesterday out of nowhere both my drives gave out. I can still see them on the my computer option but i cant use any of them. When i want to burn a blank CD it shows up on my computer but when i try to burn it, it sais no compatible recordable or rewritable devices could be found on your system. When i pop any movies or games or anything in any of the drives nothing shows up and if i click on the drive it sais please enter cd. So they cant read anything and this just happened. I have never had a problem like this in the past 2-3 years of having this computer.

Thank You if anyone can help me

I am using Compaq Presario SR1520NX.

My O is drive taken by Network drive whever I login and use wd2go.com and usb flash drive can't be used.

But when I disconnect from O network drive, by re-booting the p.c. and then plugin usb it shows up as O drive.

My question is can I re-assign my usb flash drive to a different letter so both
usb and network drive can be used ?

If so, what should I do ?

A:O drive taken by Network drive and flash drive can't be used

With the USB drive connected open Disk Management

Right Click on the drive and select Change Drive Letter and Paths

You should then be able to assign the drive a letter that is not in use.

what is the condition of the file if you move it from an NTFS5 drive to an NTFS4 drive on windows 2000?

A:moving compressed file from NTFS5 drive to NTFS4 drive on windows 2000

Try and copy it first and check the condition of the file. Moving should be the same, but if it is not readable (doubtul) then you have your original copy still. Let us know what the result is, please.

Well, I've been having this problem for a while, but now it's getting a bit out of hand. When I go to stand-by and get out of stand-by, it says 'Unable to read/write from drive C:' and other times (just regular surfing, playing CS, etc) the HD locks up for about 10 secs. It also does a thing I'd like to call "HD-turns-off-then-turns-back-on-again-with-a-grinding-sound".

I've tried reformatting which had some '...trying to recover' errors. And I've tried ScanDisk on thorough A LOT of times and it came up with some bad sectors on some of the scans. I've also tried Western Digital's disk drive utils. but it has some weird error now saying the IDE isnt plugged in correctly, but it is.

40GB Western Digital HD

A:Hard Drive acting weird. Unable to read/write on drive C:, and other errors

Hi trunten

A grinding sound with a hard drive and many bad sectors is not good. It sounds like your drive has bit the dust. Since it is 40 gig there is a good chance that it is still under a warranty as most hard drives come with at least a 1 year warranty and many have a three year warranty. You could recheck the drives jumpers (master/slave) and reseat the data cable but I don't think that will help. BOL

I have a sony vaio VGN-NR330E that I have just bought a new hard drive for (doing a fresh install of vista) and the internal optical drive spins up but won't boot off the cd, and after a blinking cursor says O/S not found, so i tried it on an external usb drive, and it didnt boot, same black screen followed by O/S not found. I tried booting from a knoppix live cd that worked on another computer and it wouldnt boot either. I have no idea of any what to do, since it wont boot off of an external HDD internal optical drive, external optical drive, and any help is greatly appreciated.

A:sony vaio vgn-nr330E won't boot to any external drive, or internal optical drive

What are the current boot options...as set in your BIOS?

If not listed as the first boot option...it's unlikely that the system would boot from either drive.

I have been fooling around with Robocopy now for a while and the amount of switches it features is a tab overwheleming

Can anyone recommend a bone stock "go to" command line specifcally for copying files from an old drive to a new drive - with the following requirements?

1. Maintaining the same folder structure (old to new) while persevering existing directory timestamps (/DCOPY:T?)

2. Ensuring that the destination files inherit the permissions of the new dest directory. (Confused here?)

3. Multithreaded (MT:8?)

4. Copy all subdirectories (/e?)

5. Give me basic info on screen (TEE/?)

6. Write a log file that's not overly huge

7. Cut the retries etc to a minimum

Anything else you think might be relevant.

Really want an easy go to command that I can reach for again and again without wondering if it works or not

My hard drive failed last Saturday, reading "operating system not found." BIOS testing resulted in error 10009, replace hard drive. At this point, the drive won't boot, but data can still be read.

I have a new hard drive. The backup disk I made for Vista isn't working.

I thought of borrowing one from a friend, but my OEM key on the bottom has completely worn off. HP says they cannot help and Microsoft wants me to pay for a replacement key. I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Is there any way to use the recovery partition on the old drive to install Vista on the new drive?

My laptop has two hard drive bays, but I only have one caddy, so ideally I'd like to connect it using an enclosure.

Also, I do have access to another computer that I could use as a "go-between" if needed. For example, if it's possible to simply copy and paste the recovery partition files, I could use the enclosure to copy them from the old drive to the working computer, then put the new drive in the enclosure and copy the files onto that.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

I have a very straightforward question: I am running WinXP Pro on my computer and I just got an external USB hard-drive to back up my data before I upgrade to VISTA.

My internal hard drive is NTFS file system, and the external drive is FAT32. My data backed-up perfectly.

However, I understand that VISTA is NTFS only (for the drive that it's installed on, which in my case will be the internal drive). I will be installing the VISTA OS on the internal drive, and using the external drive solely for backing up data.

I don't want to back up my data externally, upgrade my PC to VISTA, and then discover that I can't access the data on the external drive.

Here's my only question: will VISTA work with a FAT32 external drive, or do I have to convert that external drive to NTFS *before* I attempt to connect it to VISTA?

awaiting your replies - I'll appreciate all the help I can get!

A:will VISTA read a FAT32 external hard drive,or do I have to format the drive to NTFS?

Hey guys...I am trying to find a solution to a problem that I'm having. At work we have about 6 PC's that I would like to make drive images for in case of drive failues. I was wanting to use an external drive for the backups and was looking for a one touch feature but I don't think it would work with multiple machine backups.

I was trying to avoid having to install software on each machine to perform these backups.

So what I was thinking of doing is trying to find a program that can reside on the external drive and will run from there.

Does anyone know of a free reliable imaging program that will do this?

I had found one at one time that did just this and worked great but I can't remember for the life of me the name of the program!

Any help or ideas appreciated!!

I've never seen this before. Double click on e:\ in my computer and it says not a valid win32 application. Seen it when opening applications but not a drive! all other drives are fine. First time i saw it it was looking for install.exe, which i remember deleting a week or so ago. Most likely because it was a missing shortcut in registry or because it was corrupted or something simular. I dont know what to do about this, as I said never seen it happen b4 on a drive. You can open e drive when you right click and explore but when double click sometimes it tries to locate install.exe. No virus, but did have a few recently, I wont put it down to that though and dismiss because I am very vigilant and remove virus immediately, and scan twice a day, always scanning b4 opening apps. Weird one! Logically, how do i stop it looking for install.exe when openning?

I have a Samsung s2 1tb external hard drive.

Today when I hooked it up to my laptop it would not load. It will shows local F drive when it usually will say samsung Drive.

A pop up box will then appear stating "you need to format drive"

I know if I reformat it I will lose all my data which I will not do.

When I look in device manager it states that the external hard drive is installed.

I attempted to go through start menu and type cmd then F: and it states "The volume does not recognize this system file. Please make sure all required system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."

A:Samsung s2 external hard drive not loading showing local disk F drive

With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)

Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.

If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.

Hello, I'm going to be replacing my primary HDD (1tb) with a SSD and will place the HDD in a drive caddy, replacing the existing DVD drive. 3rd party vendors list both 12mm and 9.5mm drive caddys for this - I imagine a newer laptop would have the smaller form factor, unfortunately this spec info is not available from the manual or Lenovo tech support - does anyone happen to know? Might be best if I yank the drive and measure it or take it with me to buy a caddy in person, rather than order online. Thanks for reading,Paul

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)

I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.

The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.

How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

If there is no easy way then how do I stop program updates for Adobe etc. failing because they can not find the F drive. I don't know why they look at that drive anyway.

A:External Hard Drive - Drive Letter changed - unable to change back

Welcome aboard.

Try this:

Download drivecleanup.zip V 0.8.1 from

Drive Tools for Windows

Unzip to a folder. In it you will have two folders Win32 and x64, each containing DriveCleanup.exe for Windows 32bit and 64 bit respectively.

Now unplug all the USB devices from your PC (except of course the Keyboard and mouse), right click on the appropriate DriveCleanup.exe for your system and run it as an administrator.

This will remove all non-present drives from the registry.

Reboot and then plug-in your external drive.

The drive will be installed and hopefully you should be able to assign any free drive letter to it.

Please report whether it resolved your problem.

Have just installed a new 8.7 Maxtor in a P100. This drive is set as master and partitioned into 5 which assigns drive letters c,d,e,f,g . If I re-install the old 500mb drive unit as a slave ( Quantum Maverick) it assigns itself as drive letter D. I want this drive to show up as drive H . If I go to Device manager, hard drives, double click on generic ide type 47, settings, for this drive the drive letter assignment is there, but I cannot change it. Any ideas please.

A:{SOLVED} Slave drive letter inserts itself within master partition drive letters

I don't think you can change it. Normally the bios will take the primary of the 1st ide drive as c, the primary of the second ide as d, the next partition of the primary ide drive as e, etc.

A week ago, a strange clicking noise befalled us whenever we attempted to boot the system. The BIOS welcome screen would run for much longer than usual, and then a message "No internal hard drive found." would display. We thought it would be a hard drive error and replaced it.

Now, however, placing in a bootable OS installation CD does not work! Whenever we try, the computer acts like there is no CD (although sometimes the CD does begin to spin), and says there is no boot device available.

I have tried a Ubuntu CD, a Windows Vista CD, a Windows XP CD, and none of them work. It does not matter what CD you put in; it does not work.

So what is the problem? Is it fixable? Was it the hard drive that broke?

The system is a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop.

A:Solved: After upgrading hard drive for Inspiron 5150 laptop, CD drive does not work

Never mind, everyone! It turns out, after I took it out and put it back in, it worked again. Maybe a connection problem... who knows.

So currently my gigabyte motherboard has 2-1TB drives in a mirror raid as my secondary drive for data storage and 1 250GB single drive for my OS. In the BIOS I have the setting set to RAID for my hard drives, which I set this after I loaded windows when I first started, but now my 250GB single OS drive needs to be reloaded, but my XP disc will not see the drive since I have it set to RAID. I'm having trouble loading the raid drivers from gigabyte and I thought it would be easier to set the hard drives to AHCI mode and unplug my 2-1TB drives, reload windows on the 250 then plug my 2-TB drives back up then switch the BIOS back to RAID, but I am worried that this will mess up my RAID on my 2-1TB drives?? I would hate to experiment and lose the data on those drives. Will switching modes mess up my RAID???

A:Gigabyte Mirror Raid on backup drive need to reinstall XP on single OS drive question

Pull the drives off the system, do whatever you need to do to get XP installed. When that is working, change the settings to RAID, then reconnect the mirror.

It's best to install XP with nothing else on the system anyways, otherwise you risk having XP decide to install your O/S on drive "D:".

With my 2009 Seagate 500 GB sata hard drive, the re-allocated sectors count shows 2 bad sectors, in the Ubuntu 10.04 disk utility for the smart data. In this multi-boot desktop PC the XP with a drive monitor program called, Active Smart shows this drive health status as good, including that reallocated sectors count item, so is this not to worry about for now, or what. I do monitor the hard drive temperature, which does stay cool enough, in the seventies up to about 80* F.
Or can this be caused by mixed partitioning methods, since the new way is now align to MiB, and not align to cylinder as it was. I used the GParted tool to create and change partitions when it was set as default to align to cylinder, but then I recently used both my Vista Disk Manager, and the newer version of GParted to re-size some of the partitions, which both now use that align to MiB method by default, which often has near 1 MB gaps between partitions then.

Bit of a strange issue here - someone got fired from work and changed the password on the Windows 8 computer before they left. I just managed to reset the password yesterday but now the Outlook account has none of their previous emails and the One Drive account files seem to have all gone missing and certain files that were on the C: Drive are all gone and not in recycle bin either.

When I reset the password I noticed there were three accounts on the computer - USER (which is the one I reset since it was the default when starting up computer), ADMINISTRATOR (didn't touch this one) and GUEST (didn't touch this either).

AfterI reset the password, I'm pretty sure it was the right one as there were still a few relevant files still on the desktop. It's just everything else seems to have vanished.

When I search for certain files in the Explorer, file names come up but it says that "the file location has now been changed" so the shortcut doesn't work.
