Cannot adjust volume from speaker icon or from Control Panel

Q: Cannot adjust volume from speaker icon or from Control Panel

I have been searching different forums where the speaker icon has disappeared from the notification area of the task bar, but have not found a solution to the particular problem I am experiencing. In my case the speaker icon is still visible but when I click on it, I no longer get the vertical bar which allows me to adjust the volume. I have made no recent changes to my computer and cannot understand why this has suddenly happened. I have gone to taskbar properties and tried turning the volume icon on and off but this has not cured the problem.

I have discovered the problem I am experiencing is limited to my user account only. I have one other named account and a guest account. The other user is able to adjust the volume from the speaker icon on the notification bar, and when I log into the guest account I find it is also working perfectly. However, when I log into my user acount it does not work. I have also tried adjusting the volume by going into Control Panel - Hardware and Sound - Sound - Adjust system volume but when I click on it nothing happens. However, when I go into the guest account I find I can adjust the volume from both the icon on the notification bar and by going through the Control Panel method.

I therefore suspect that my user account may have been corrupted in some way. I should stress that my problem is limited to my inability to adjust the volume in my user account. I do have sound, I just am unable to control it!

(I should add that I have run the Microsoft Security Scanner as I thought that my pc might have been infected with a virus but the scanner found no infected files).

Preferred Solution: Cannot adjust volume from speaker icon or from Control Panel

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The problem is obviously corruption of the user account. Try an sfc and maybe it will be corrected

I'm running windows XP on an old Dell Inspiron 1501 and I'm trying to get my microphone to play directly through my speakers so I can record them both simultaneously. The only answer I've been finding is to tick the 'microphone' checkbox in the volume control playback properties panel, but I don't have a microphone checkbox. There should be a 'microphone' box under SW Synth and CD player but I don't get one apparently.I've downloaded the latest SigmaTel Audio drivers from Dell and despite not having a problem with them before this, I'm inclined to believe that they're the problem. Any ideas?

A:No microphone control in playback Volume Control panel

Okay well of course I find an answer right after posting the topic:

Those two pages detail how to get an Input Monitor checkbox which functions just like the microphone one I wanted (although you can only mute it, not alter the volume). I used Instructional Set 3 from the second page, having to add the 'RecMonitorMute' entry as detailed in the first page and I can now hear my microphone input directly through my speakers.

HOWEVER, I'm still unable to record both the microphone and speaker sound at the same time. I thought recording the 'Stereo Mix' channel with the microphone coming through the speakers would work but it isn't and I don't know why. Any ideas?

Hi, I have a pair of old Yamaha speakers and an SB Live Value sound card and I'm running XP. The speakers have a volume control and a headphone jack on them. Up until recently they were working fine but then my children were playing around on the PC and now neither the volume control on the speaker nor the headphone jack works (if I plug in the headphones the sound continues to be played through the speakers).

I've searched through the archives but haven't spotted anyone who has had a similar problem and since I've been banging my head against the wall for a couple of weeks I'd really appreciate some help.

A:Speaker volume control not working

If I read your post correctly, you are still getting sound from the speakers, right? It kind of sounds like the speaker controls and the headphone jack have been damaged somehow. Do you have another set of speakers you can test with or another PC to try these speakers on?

2. Under the ?Taskbar? tab, look for the button that says ?Customize? and click it (this is to customize the notification area).

3. In the new window, look for ?Volume? under the list of icons. Out to the right, click the drop-down menu and choose ?Show icon and notifications?.

4. Click OK to close that window, then OK again to close the Properties window.

In Control Panel, under SOUND AND AUDIO DEVICES PROPERTIES, ADVANCED AUDIO PROPERTIES, I've set my SPEAKERS to "5.1 Surround Sound Speakers" to go along with my new Pro Media 5.1 system. I have a Creative Audigy card.

Every time I reboot it changes back to DESKTOP STEREO SPEAKERS. So I change it again, APPLY, and say OK. When I reboot... same thing happens again.

How can I force XP to stay with that 5.1 selection?

Hi everyone,

I just got a new monitor with speakers on it and I hooked it up to my video card with a HDMI cable. I don't want to use the monitor's speakers because they don't get very loud but for some reason the volume control knob on my external speakers hasn't worked since I plugged the monitor in.

I've gone into the playback devices and set my speakers to be the default device but I can crank knob all the way from 0 to max on my speakers and the sound remains at a constant level (which is very low as well). I've also tried disabling all of the Nvidia high def audio devices but that hasn't helped anything either. I'd greatly appreciate some advice with this!

Thanks in Advance

The Volume balance control sliders that you can access from Sound > Speaker Properties > Levels > Balance only control the volumes that each individual speaker has.

Is there a slider, windows function or program that can shift both the output from the left and right speakers, to the left speaker, so that nothing will be missed .

Many thanks,

I was working on getting my new headset's mic to be recognized by my computer but was unsuccessful. I tried to install an update to my current sound card driver as I had an inkling that might be the problem. However now I have no sound at all. No volume control panel nothing as option is grayed out. I checked the device and it says This device is not working (code 10). I have a realtek sound card. Usually came up in the volume control screen as Avance AC'97 Audio.

Any suggestions. I have downloaded drivers and nothing. Starting to annoy me as now I can't run skype which is the only reason I care about sound. Otherwise I don't use it for anything else. Sound in applications annoy me. However I would like to talk with my best friend on skype again. LOL

A:I have a icon in control panel & it does nothing.

Hello Jerry,

Before you do any of the below, be sure to right click on the long number CLSID key in the left pane and click on Export before you delete it. This way if it's not the right one, you will be able to just double click on the exported REG file to restore it.

Once there, look at each long number CLSID key in the left pane under NameSpace until you see one that has nothing entered in the right pane for (Default). If you spot it, then you can just right click on and delete the long number CLSID key for it.

Hope this helps,

Hi. I am new to this forum, so hello to everybody. I have been having a strange problem with my "Volume Control" icon in the taskbar. It appears as usual on the taskbar when I turn my computer on and it works fine, but then disappears (gets replaced by the unknown program icon) after a while and stops working. I can never work out when exactly this happens but as soon as I restart the computer, it reappears for a while and so on... When I click on this unknown program icon that replaced the Volume Control, Windows start looking for the Sndvol32.exe and then displays the "Problem with Shortcut" message which then suggests either to point to the the nearest match C:WINDOWSPCHEALTHUploadBBinariesUploadM.exe, or delete it. I press cancel at this point because the whole thing sounds a bit strange as things go back to normal after restart. I also tried going to the "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the Control Panel and try to click "Place volume icon in the taskbar" when this occurred, but I got this message: "Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel."Could this be related to the Spyware/Adware problems I've been having? (The problem is, no matter how many times I fix problems with Spybot, they come back after a short while and I get many annoying pop-ups.)Fyi, my OS is Windows XP, I use PopupManager an... Read more
