Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware Programs Blocked Even in Safe Mode

Q: Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware Programs Blocked Even in Safe Mode

Good morning everyone,
Frequent visitor, first time poster of this forum. I want to thank anyone in advance for committing any amount of time to my problem. I'm hoping someone has some experience with this issue. Allow me to explain:

Yesterday, I woke-up my computer and opened up my browser (I use Google Chrome). As soon as I clicked to open the browser, I noticed a Windows Explorer Pop-up. I have attached a picture of what this box looks like, but to describe it for those who are not able to open the attachment: The windows header said "Mod Info" and the Content said "BC LOADED" the only available options for me to click were "OK" or the "Close" button at the top right. Without clicking anything the box then disappeared and Google Chrome opened as usual. This behavior was unexpected, I've never seen this before. Worrying I had some kind of Spyware or Malware, I decided to try running my AV program. I use Avast Free.

I went to look for the process in the hidden icons list on my taskbar, where it usually resides. I didn't see it there, which was concerning. I tried running the program from the start menu, but after clicking it, nothing opened. This was also a red flag that something must be wrong. So I decided to try and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. This program would also not open when prompted.

I decided to scan google for my symptoms to look for recommended fixes. Several tech support forums suggested to those who presented similar symptoms, that they were suffering from a malware/ransomware process. I have no ransomware symptoms (no prompts to pay, at least). I saw recommendations for running Malware disabling tools including: RKill.exe, RogueKiller.exe, and tdsskiller.exe. The programs advised I run them, kill the Malware process, then remove them with Malwarebytes. I tried all 3 of these programs, but none of them will run. Per advise of various websites as well as the program developers, I tried redownloading and renaming the programs to winlogon.exe and RKill.com and other suggested names. None of these renaming procedures allowed me to run the programs.

I tried booting in Safe Mode with Networking. The programs would still not run. I tried restating, renaming the programs, and AGAIN running in Safe Mode with Neworking. Same issue. I even tried running the RogueKillerCMD.exe version in Safe Mode with Command Prompt. The program was still blocked.

I reached out to a techy friend who advised I reinstall windows. Fortunately my computer had a free Upgrade to Windows 10 offer still available. I downloaded the update and it prompted me to restart my computer to finish the installation. I did so and saw the Windows Updating screen with a Percentage tracker. At approximately 18% completion, I received a blue screen of death. I have attached a picture to this post of what the screen said (in case it's relevant).

At this point, my techy friend has advised I purchase a new SSD, install windows on that, and commit my present HDD to a storage drive. I'm not opposed to doing this if it is the only option I have, but I came here first to see if anyone has any fix recommendations that don't involve me spending money.

As I came to this website, I read the NEW INSTRUCTIONS page and followed the guide prior to posting. The post says to run dds.scr and attach the attach.txt and paste the results of the dds.txt file.

When I run the program, a window pops up that says "DDS is running in silent mode". Shortly after, this window disappears and is replaced with "two logs shall be created on your Desktop". Approx 15 seconds later, those boxes disappear and a new Notepad file opens, called "attach.txt". However, when I look at the desktop, there is NO dds.txt file. The program has only created one new file, despite the instructions page AND the program itself telling me it should create two. My only assumption is that my malware is ALSO blocking the effects of this program as well.

I'm at the end of my rope here. It feels like every time I find some advice, it involves running a program that is being blocked. I'm not sure what else I can do at this point. If anyone has any recommendations, I would very much appreciate the help.

Thank you for your time.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am usually able to resolve this sort of problem on my own, but this one has me baffled. I got hit with a bogus anti-virus worm. I immediately chased the files that were created the moment the worm attacked. As has happened before, zone labs and malwarebytes were rendered inoperable. In the past when this has happened to others, in was able to kill the task causing the problem in task manager, reinstall my anti-virus and anti-malware programs, delete or quarantine the virus, clean the registry with registry fix, and everything was back to normal.

This new worm/Trojan is a bit more sinister. At one point, it was creating a task that included a : in the task name. I could find the filename for that appeared prior to the colon, but could not kill the task. When I try to install zone alarm, it would tell me that it was having problems disabling my existing version. I tried to delete zonealarm but it failed. With malwarebytes, I was able to reinstall, but 10 seconds in, it crashed. When I try to rerun malwarebytes, I am told I don't have permission to run the program. I tried Emsisoft anti-malware. Seems to install okay, but the minute I try to do a scan, windows crashes to blue screen.

One consistent item I have found in each anti-virus directory is a file with no name. I see a file icon, but I cannot delete the file nor rename it (the rename box opens, but errors).

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that I am running XP Professional sp3.

Sorry this has taken a while to get back to you. Original post is here.I was able to run the DDS application with no problems, but GMER was another story. On the first run I received several pop up boxes telling me data was lost even though the application completed. However, it would not let me save the file. The second run resulted in my computer restarting itself. I was not watching as this happened, so I am assuming I got another blue screen. Last night/this morning, the third run is the charm. To restate the problem, I was attacked by a bogus anti-virus worm. My zone labs and malwarebytes were rendered inoperable. All anti-virus/malware programs have a file in their directory with a blank file name that cannot be deleted. With malwarebytes, I was able to reinstall, but 10 seconds in, it crashed. When I try to rerun malwarebytes, I am told I don't have permission to run the program. I tried Emsisoft anti-malware. My subscription for Macafee ran out and I never got around to downloading AVG or some other antivirus freeware on my netbook. I experienced some obvious signs of a virus/malware not long after (I would do a google search on Chrome and would get redirected to some very odd sites when I clicked on something safe-looking). So I attempted to download AVG and others with no luck. I then restored my system to an earlier date hoping this would be good enough to remove whatever virus/malware was affecting it. No such luck as I am still unable to download said freeware (although now I am able to surf the net with no issues). So, I happened across your lovely website and am crossing my fingers that you may be able to save the day!

Thanks so much for your time!

Hello Blueraven301 and welcome to BleepingComputer,Print these instructions or save them to your Desktop as a text file, since you'll need to reboot in safe mode (without networking support), so you'll be unable to connect here.1. I was browsing the web when I got a pop-up from Avast! saying that a trojan was downloading to my computer, but that Avast had stopped it. However, a few seconds later I got tons of pop-ups from a rogue anti-spyware program and when I tried to open super anti-spyware or malwarebytes it told me that the program was infected and refused to let me run it.

After rebooting, I ran Avast. It found a trojan, I deleted it and the pop-ups went away. I could then open Super anti-spyware and Malwarebytes, but both found nothing when I scanned. My computer is running much more slowly than before the trojan and when I try to update my anti-malware programs I get an error saying I can't connect to the server. I uninstalled Avast, since it seemed to be having the most trouble, in the hopes that I could reinstall. When I tried to reinstall it, again, I 'couldn't connect to server'.

In addition to the slow computer, Firefox keeps crashing unexpectedly and my dvd drive doesn't find the blank dvd I insert when trying to back up my files.

I would be eternally grateful for any help!

I tryed to seed a file, but couldn't because I couldn't connect to utorrent because Webroot SecureAnywhere blocked it. I deleted utorrent and plan to re-install it. I just wanted to know that if by deleting and re-installing utorrent, will this reverse the damage I did. How can I un-block utorrent?

A:My anti-virus program blocked one of my programs. How to reverse this?

I have no opinion as to the harmfullness or otherwise of utorrent, but your problem is not with the utorrent software, but with the fact that your AV has classified it as harmful, and, having uninstalled the utorrent software your AV may well stop you re-installing it !

The cure is to go into the control panel of your AV and create an exception there to allow utorrent to run. I can't give detailed advice on how to do this Webroot SA because I am not familiar with it, but if the method is not reasonably obvious try the Webroot help, FAQs, support and their forums.

my computer was recently infected with something that makes this statement pop up every time someone logs on to the computer: the procedure entry point _ [email protected]@z could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll. And in my attempts to get rid of it, i came across soft safeness, which i then realized was another infection. i cant get rid of either, and one of these infections stops any program that may help from running. Nothing seems to work, nothing opens, and i cant get rid of the infections

First of all i would like to apologize if this topic is in wrong category, or it should not even be asked on this site. And second of all, please be patience i'm a noob looking for answers So whats all about? Well i'm meeting new terms here and i have no idea what they mean and what they do. And as anyone else i wanna be safe in this era of cyber-crime. So basically i know whats a anti-virus and a anti-spyware and that they can run together. Also i heard that 2 anti-virus don't do good but 2 anti-spyware do. So what i'm asking is, what is a anti-malware? Can a anti-malware, anti-virus, and anti-spyware run together? Could you suggest some good+free of those 3? Sorry for my bad English and being such a noob

A:Anti-malware, Anti-virus, Anti-spyware

Florin, you might take interest in this thread, though it may be quite a bit of reading: What's the Best Anti-virus?

It is there that they discuss all kinds of different antiviruses and coupled security software. I personally only use Microsoft Security Essentials, but I have used it along with Malwarebytes for added security in the past.

Basically, you could have your system completely locked down with lots of extra security, but in some cases it becomes a hassle because of how much your computer becomes protected and overly secured. If you prefer a speedy computer over security, generally you use less security software, but if it is the other way around, you will want beefier security software which may slow things down slightly. That link I've provided will have most everything you will need.

GENERAL BACKGROUND: The computer has been going slow for about 6 months. I installed full version of MCAFFE about 4 months ago and it seemed to get worse. . But about a month ago computer was getting prohibitively slow forcing me to wait ages for pages to open and constantly restart : constantly giving ?Program Not Responding? messages and Explorer closing. Assuming I it was either MacAfee just slowing me down (read it takes up too many resources), I uninstalled MacAfee and same time installed various free security software in it?s place?. can?t remember all - I copied a list of recommended off Answers.com sort of blog from someone who seemed to know what they were talking about.

LAST MONTH INSTALLED: AVG antivirus only, Threat Fire, a-Squared?., aSquared Dialler + Windows Firewall
all free versions (this is minimum list, there was at least 1 more popular anti-spyware I tried to install, but you had to buy something from their advertisers and they give you the code, but it never came through - can?t remember all):

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Spybot - Search & Destroy
SpywareBlaster
SUPERAntiSpyware

I also sometimes use:

Are there any other good programs I should know about? I figure the more the better!

Thanks!

Spyware Terminator.-- Web Security Guard is included in the download but not required. After installation you will be prompted to Enable Web Security Guard Toolbar. This browser add-on (similar to Site Advisor) is enabled by default so be sure to uncheck the box if you do not want it installed. If you install WSG by mistake, it can easily be removed later via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.-- If you already have an anti-virus application, there is no need to install the optional Clam AntiVirus integration. ClamAV does not have a real time scanning engine but you can integrate it into ST's Realtime Shield to include virus scanning support. However, you can overkill your system with resource heavy security programs that will drain your resources and slow down performance. Sometimes you just have to experiment to get the right combo for your particular system as there is no universal solution that works for everyone. mvps.org is no longer recommending Spybot S&D or Ad-Aware due to poor testing results. See here - (scroll down and read under Freeware Antispyware Products) Further, most people don't understand Spybot's TeaTimer or how to use it and that feature can cause more problems than it's worth. While not free, I recommend using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and taking advantage of the Protection Module which uses advanced heuristic scanning technology to monitor your system and provide real-time protection to prevent the installation of most new malware. I am running Windows XP Pro - SP3, Norton Anti Virus and got infected with Anti Virus Pro (through Charter.com email I think). Obviously it stops me from connnecting to the internet, running scans, installing other Malware Removal software. Additionally, when I try to boot to any of the Safe Modes, it reboots before it finishes listing the programs loading; specifically it reboots at MUP.SYS, the last item in the Safe Mode posting screen. At this point, I set the Hard Drive up as a Slave and put it into my other computer running Charter's brand of Anti-Virus. I did this hoping that scanning it as a different drive would allow me to remove the virus. It took several hours of scanning 1 million files, it found 47 virus', 1 malware, cleared some of them. I can attach the Norton Log if you like. I have not tried the Slave drive back in the original PC because I wanted to post here first and I see that there are very good instructions on here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-system-pro) for removing this problem. I do not think it has the problem solved because the LDVX.EXE is still on the root of the C drive of the Slave and it won't let me delete it. I have downloaded Combofix and Malware Bytes but have not used the Malware Bytes yet. Where should I start?

I'm running on windows xp operating system and I figured my system got infected from a flash drive I used. I didn't have any anti-virus in place while this happened because I was yet to install it. I downloaded different types of anti-virus and when i clicked install/run, it won't process anything and exit right away.

I tried booting into safe mode, it won't go in either. Instead it restarts the pc. I tried booting into safe mode by changing the boot.ini file and my pc ended up in a continuous reboot sequence. Thankfully I was able to restore booting it to normal but the malware is still present. Regedit and taskmanager is disabled.

Camera Wizard not poping up after removing Total Security/Antivirus Pro_2010 I have a PC with Windows XP SP3 with Avast, SuperAnti-Spyware and MBAM while browsing I got a yellow virus warning (something win32 I believe) from Avast pop up near the bottom tray and within seconds the Total Security pop-ups started. My PC slowed to a stop so I rebooted and saw that Antivirus Pro_2010 had installed itself on my PC. All my Anti Virus programs would not start (ie MBAM) so I ended up following forums to end some processes, delete some .dll files that were known to be malicious and rename the .exe's to get Anti Virus programs to run. I installed and used AVG which found a couple things. Then I used ComboFix, and finally I got MBAM to run which found a good 40+ trojans etc. I believe I got the virus off but I tried to restore to before I got the virus but was unable to. I have since run scans with MBAM and SuperAnti-Spyware which have found nothing. Avast also finds nothing but it has a list of 44 files (mostly in WINDOWS\ folder with the last path part of file doubled) that it is unable to scan: because "The system cannot find the specified path". When I look on my C: drive and follow the file path, the second to last part is always missing (ie. WINDOWS\addins\addins) addins is not there. Running Windows XP, SP2.

I first noticed this two days ago, when popups started occurring, seemingly at random. Popups were occurring in Firefox, which I did not otherwise have open at the time.

The most notable thing I was doing that day was reconfiguring my router, which had gotten out of sync with the modem awhile ago during a power outage. The only thing I did during this process was tell my router to automatically acquire a MAC address, and then had it clone the current MAC address. (I'm not sure I described this process right.) I'm not sure if this introduced a security risk, somehow.

Anyway, after getting the popups, I assumed spyware, opened AdAware SE, and attempted to update it. I started getting several runtime errors, which I did not, unfortunately, write down. After this, I deleted AdAware and reinstalled it. At this point, I was still able to get on to AdAware's webpage to redownload the software. After reinstalling it, it still wasn't loading right, so I updated Spybot S&D (Again, still able to access the update interface properly), and then I restarted the computer.

After restarting, things were significantly worse. I discovered that the XP login screen was... Read more

I should also note that I kept getting forced shutdown messages while trying to run GMER, which is why it took my so long to get these logs.

Hello, I consider myself a fairly advanced computer user, but I'm having an issue I'm 99% sure is MalWare related. My laptop freezes CONSTANTLY, sometimes out of nowhere, and sometimes when I walk away for 5 minutes. I have tried numerous times to run AVG, Ad-Aware SE, and both freeze shortly after the scan starts (also tried in SAFE MODE). Now sometimes I can browse the we for hours, but as soon as a start a scan, install, or update, these issues are more common. I am fairly confident that this is not a hardware issue, since I've ran advanced diagnostics on them all, including BIOS. I have a HiJack This Log, and help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I became infected yesterday with AntiVirus Pro through a What'sApp "voice mail" sent to my email.  I have read the instructions on how to safely remove the malware, but I cannot get my computer to run on Safe Mode.

I have tried F8 upon starting my pc, but the option to run the pc in Safe Mode w/ an enabled network is not available.  I have manually tried to run Safe Mode through Start/Run/msconfig/ as stated in your instructions (thank you so much!) and before the System configuration utility box pops up, it is blocked by the AntiVirus Pro.  I get a pop up window saying that this file is infected.

I was able to download the Rkill program through your website on another computer and have saved it to a usb drive, I'm wondering if I can bypass running my computer on Safe Mode and install the Rkill instead and try to remove the malware? Would this get rid of the program then? I'm wondering if I do this, then if I can run the pc in Safe Mode?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So it started when my computer froze up one day, I tried to restart it and every time I logged back onto my computer it would freeze up again. Windows Security Center was shut off and I could not turn it back on. Also my anti-virus software, Avira, had been turned off and I could not turn it back on. Eventually my computer began to freeze as soon as all my startup programs loaded, so I could not do anything unless I was in safe mode. I have ran malwarebytes in safe mode and removed some infections there. I deleted Avira and have tried to re-install it, but it will not turn on and usually freezes as well. I cannot run a scan through Avira without the computer restarting. I have ran TDSSkiller and it found nothing. Also have ran RKill. Still can not get Avira to turn on protection or run a scan. Avira usually freezes anytime I try to do anything. I have also deleted all temporary files. Anytime I try to log on my computer in Normal mode, it freezes still. I have no restore points.

I have two DDS logs that I was able to get by running DDS tool, here they are:

I do not know much about computers at all so sorry if I am not giving enough info. I have windows vista. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I have just spent two nights removing the "Fake System Restore" virus from my girlfriends laptop
by following the guide on this site, so a big thankyou to whoever wrote the guide.

Now I want to make sure her laptop is protected as well as I can with free software.

I have installed; AVAST anti virus, Zone Alarm firewall and MalwareBytes onto the laptop,
but I now wonder if there are any other reccomended programs that I should install
to help avoid spyware, malware and viruses?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

A:Which are the best Anti Spyware and Anti Malware programs?

I recommend taking advantage of the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Pro) Protection Module in the full version which uses advanced heuristic scanning technology to monitor your system and provide real-time protection to prevent the installation of most new malware. This technology runs at startup where it monitors every process and helps stop malicious processes before they can infect your computer. Keep in mind that this feature does not guarantee something will not slip through as no product can detect and prevent every type of malware. The database that defines the heuristics is updated as often as there is something to add to it. Also keep in mind that Malwarebytes does not act as a real-time protection scanner for every file like an anti-virus program so it is intended to be a supplement, not a substitute. IP Protection (malicious website blocking) is part of the Protection Module and works after it is enabled. When attempting to go to a potential malicious website, Malwarebytes will block the attempt and provide an alert. IP Protection is also designed to block incoming connections it determines to be malicious. Enabling the Protection Module feature feature requires registration and purchase of a license key that includes free lifetime upgrades and support. After activation, Malwarebytes can be set to update itself and schedule scans automatically on a daily basis. The Protection Module is not intrusive as the program utilizes few system resources and should not conflict wi... Read more

Hello everyone.

I have tried my best to remove this virus on my laptop, but no success yet.

Here are all of the things the virus does:

-Prevents access to websites like spybot, instead of letting me see the site, it simply says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage", and there is a button to click that says "Diagnose Connection Problem" (no connection problem of course)

-When I click links from a google search, they most of the time take me to the wrong webpage and I am forced to copy/paste the original link into the web bar.

-Programs like Combofix, Spybot, and HJT do not work and a box comes up after starting them saying "Combofix has stopped working".

-I tried running the programs in Safe Mode, but no luck there.

If anyone knows a fix please reply.

Thanks,

Sean

I am having an issue with, what I believe is, the google redirect virus or whatever it may be called now. It all started last week when I was working on my accounting homework for school and was working between Microsoft Word 2007 and various websites in IE9 (running Windows 7). I was working on my homework when suddenly all of the windows closed without warning (internet, word, and windows explorer) and my computer restarted. When Windows reloaded, my desktop background had changed to solid black and half of my desktop icons went missing. The more I did to try to fix it, the worse it got and the more icons disappeared. I found a thread on this forum that described the fix and followed it step by step. I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes, the unhide program (i dont recall the proper name but the icon is a white briefcase with a red cross on it), and another program that I renamed to iexplore.com per the instructions. I was able to restore the desktop icons and full functionality of the computer after doing that process. Although I was never able to run TDSSKiller (even with the disguised version) or Kapersky...couldn't even install them.

Now I am living with the issue of the redirected search links. I can get to Google (or any other search engine) and search normally, but when I click the link that I want, it will take me to some other random website having nothing to do with my search (for example, i search for Bleeping Computer and click the link for www.bleepin... Word in the street is this is the place to come when it seems all hope is lost. I pray you can help rid me of my demons! What started 2-3 months ago as a very occasional browser redirect in Firefox, then spread to Explorer and Chrome has sought to reek all kinds of havoc. The browser redirect problem got completely out of control about 3 weeks ago (new tabs and windows open, links completely unresponsive, etc). Two weeks ago I fired up the box and some fake antivirus software completely ruled. Everything I tried to start or open was denied due to "a potential threat" or "infection." CntlAltDel didn't work at all. Explorer would open itself and visit Pill/Porn sites. I tried to restart in safemode and the system just BSODs and cycles. I disconnected the internet and shut it down.

Today I opened up the case and pulled the power from 2 slave drives I use to hold images and fired it up. No sign of the fake antivirus, but I get the feeling it's about to creep back. The browser still redirects like mad. MalwareBytes shows nothing wrong. rootrepeal found something called z00clicker.

System is Win XP Pro, SP3, newer hardware. So please help me out, if you can I promise to be better at making restore points and back-ups, and of actually using my antivirus software! Tell me what you need.

Hi everyone,

I have a friend wanting me to help with her computer. She runs an old Windows 98 machine that has become infested with spyware and viruses.

Webpages keep being redirected to bizrate and bizoffers and any attempt to download software such as Ad-Aware or Spybot are being denied by Bad Gateway errors.

She can't download Hijack This or do any online virus scans because she's blocked from doing so by the spyware.

Would installing the MVPS Hosts file prevent the spyware from blocking access to these sites so that we can help her?

Please help.

Thanks.

A:Can't download anti-spyware programs or anti-virus programs

It would definately be a start. Also try this:

Right click on this link http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/DelO15Domains.inf and choose Save As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards. NOTE: This script will delete any sites you may have added to the Trusted Sites. So if you want them back, you have to add them back to the Trusted Sites again.

Next thing to try, is go into Add/Remove and check for the following programs. If you struggle removing, you can reboot to Safe Mode and try again.

Hello,

I have a problem that is far beyond my limited skills. One of our people has a laptop that has either malware or a virus infecting it. Two symptoms are present: first, when using firefox web pages get redirected to advertising or to unrelated google searches; second, the machine seems more sluggish than usual.

I have tried to download anti-spyware software (e.g. Spy Sweeper, CounterSpy, MalwareBytes, Superantispyware, PC Doctor) and nothing works. In some cases such as Counterspy and PC Doctor, the executable will run but the program will not update (and thus, not allow for a scan). In other cases such as MalwareBytes, the executable simply will not run.

I have run a Trend Micro anti-virus scan. It seems to detect something but it crashes before the scan can complete. The same thing happens with Panda Activescan. Last night, I ran Panda Activescan for over 8 hours. When I woke up, the scan had frozen at the 52% point and had found 1 infected file, which it didn't appear to clean up.

Anyway, I'd really appreciate any help.
Best regards,
Jordan
