IE7 is caching mp3 files at mms:// not supported by WMP11

Q: IE7 is caching mp3 files at mms:// not supported by WMP11

We are having a puzzling problem with a certain piece of software that generates HTML and JavaScript that displays content with a sound file. The sound plays fine the first time it is encountered but if the user returns to the same page, the sound file does not play.
We have narrowed it down to a caching problem in IE7. It is caching the file with a URL that starts mms://xxx.xx.xx/yy.mp3. When this is passed to WMP11, WMP complains that the protocol is not supported.
We think that support for mms was removed from WMP-11.
If you go to the cache and try to get WMP to play it directly, it gives the same error.

How do we fix this?

Any ideas about what would cause IE7 to think that the cache entry should be flagged with a protocol at all? I think that it would work if the file was just cached as an MP3

It seems to be a problem under Vista but that could be just because Vista is new and most people get automatic updates so they are all on the same version of WMP.

Thanks for any hints or help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Vista 64 Home Premium. Windows Media Player 11

I use CBT's on CDROM borrowed from work. They are mostly made for Win 2000 and XP, but they will run fine on Vista. They often have short video clips in .asx (text file pointer) and .asf formats. WMP 11 will not open these files and point to a necessary missing codec (Sipro Lab Telecom ACELP.net (130)
I've searched for and found several codec paks which were stated to address this but do not. I've also found several workarounds such as renaming the files (not possible, they are on a CD)

MS Technet states that .asf is "a preferred media format" of windows media player, so why isn't it supported out of the box?

By the way, I can share my main computer cdrom and run these CBT's on an old ME machine over my network, but that's pita.

In the past, whenever viewing embedded music, flash, and videos (large files) on webpages, they would always appear in my temporary internet files which was handy so I could go and grab them later if I wanted to.
I'm not working on a different PC and for some reason this isn't happening anymore. Is there any simple explanation for this? It's really frustrating.

My question here is basic and hopefully I can get some help. I think my WMP11 is corrupt or just some files are. I cannot play .wmv files anymore no matter how many different codecs I use. I can play them through a divx player though. I even uninstalled all codecs and still no good. I did used to be able to play all of them so you know. Also whenever I do play any videos on wmp11 it usually crashes at some point and I have to exit out of it (it doesnt crash my pc though)
Any thoughts or anyone heard of this before?

Hello.
I have a friend with two laptops. One is an old Dell Inspiron 510 and the other is a new Samsung NC10. iPlayer desktop version 1.2.11066 is installed on both. Both run WMP11. The problem is that the Samsung cannot play iplayer files downloaded to be "used by Windows media player", whether downloaded by the DELL or by the Samsung. WMP loads up, few seconds later, on the bottom left it says "codec aquired", while at the same time a popup windows comes up saying "a codec is required".
The odd thing is that the required codec is Windows Video 9. This codec should be part of WMP11. But in case something had gone wrong, I downloaded and installed:
first, a bunch of codecs from http://www.free-codecs.com/Codec_Pack_All_in_1_download.htm
and then the WMP11 runtime from http://www.free-codecs.com/Windows_Media_Format_11_download.htm
all this to no effect.
I also installed ffdshows (it was on the DELL)
If of any interest, VLC "open" the files in the DELL (but they are scrambled, because of VRM, I guess), while in the Samsung the player does not open the video part, but one can only see the time cursor advancing like in an audio only file, although the video codec is properly identified.
Somewhere I saw a mention of issues of WMP11 with Quicktime, but this is not installed on the Samsung (nor on the DELL).
Listing the codec shows most of them on both machines (but the Windows video 9, or WMV3, does not appear in the list on either of the... Read more

so now every single .exe application is opening with WMP11! i cant even do a system restore because the system restore is a .exe, and i cant find a tab where i can choose a different default program for .exe's

iv been trying to fix it for about an hour but im not getting anywhere, very frustrating! any help is greatly appreciated

I then answer Yes, then get a new message saying: "The file or device you are trying to use requires a component of Windows Media Player to be updated. Click upgrade to download the required component." I then click upgrade, but nothing happens.

I know the music files contain some form of protection, but it was no problem playing them on the previous version of WMP.

I just recently switched from Winamp to Windows Media Player 11, which seems to work pretty well so far, but one thing I'm missing from Winamp is the enqueue function. If you don't know how it works, basically, if I have my playlist up and decide that I want to go straight from song #5 to song #3 and continue from there, all I have to do is start song #5 and then hit the Q button on song #3. Is there any function like that in WMP11?

I've ripped music off 2 CDs a few weeks ago and renamed them '(Artist) - (Song Title)' for each file and put them in my Mu Music folder. Suddenly at random times though, WMP11 decides to rename it to what it was originally called when it was ripped, '(Track Number) - Song Title)'. I recognized that it usually happens when I drag new songs into the My Music folder or when I rip new songs. WMP keeps renaming the files I've ripped even though I keep renaming them back to how I want them. So now I have like 20 songs called "01 - (Insert song title)", "02 - (Insert song title)", when I just want it "(Artist) - (Song title)". Does anybody know how I can get WMP to stop automatically renaming my files, because it's getting very annoying. Thanks.

A:Wmp11 Automatically Renaming My Music Files

Hmmm. I don't use WMP, but try this.
Go to Tools->Options->Click on the Library tab. On the bottom there should be a checkbox saying Rename music files using rip music settings. Uncheck it, and see if that helpers. If you're encountering more rename issues, try unchecking some of those too.

Hi, I have an unusual problem:

Window Media PLayer 11 plays .wmv files fine the first time I try and play in any given session. However if I try and play a second file, the video slows to a crawl - about 4 frames/sec although the audio is OK. This continues until I either reboot the computer or (weirdly) if I change users then it works for one time in the new user. If I change back to the original user it works one time again.

Other types of video work OK eg. Divx or Xvid. ie they can be played multiple times properly.

Setup: Windows 7 X64 Enterprise, no SP1.
Problems:
1) Tried the registry change to clear the offline files cache on c:\windows\csc and move it to d:\csc

http://www.mydigitallife.info/how-to-relocate-or-move-offline-files-client-side-caching-location-in-windows-7-or-vista/ . This doesn't work. Windows simply ignores the reg key "CacheLocation" and post-reboot just recreates c:\windows\csc after
I went through the steps to remove it earlier. Syntax used in the reg key for CacheLocation is \??\d:\csc (I tried with and without the folder created manually).
2) Offlines files when instructed to sync a child folder of a parent drive mapping attempts to sync the entire parent folder. This is really annoying because the parent folder has over 1TB in it.
\\servername\parent\child is right clicked, I choose "always available offline" and I see it start to sync. In the progress bar I can literally see it pulling data like xls and pst files off of the parent folder.
???
What's puzzling is that others seem to have luck in getting #1 to work so it makes me think I'm screwing up the steps but I've check it and tried it twice now.
Any help would be appreciated.

A:Offline Files Cache location change not working and caching entire parent directory

The default location of the Offline Folders cache is %systemroot%\csc. If you need to move this cache to another location
on your computer for some reason, follow these steps:
1. Set the following REG_DWORD registry key to a value of 1:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters\MigrationParamters

Doing this ensures that all items in the cache are migrated

2. Run the Windows Easy Transfer wizard. Once the data has been scanned, a Customize link is displayed. Click this link and
make sure that Windows Settings is checked for all items displayed in the list.

3. Once you have collected the data, set the following String registry key to specify the new cache location:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters\CacheLocation

For example, to move the cache to a folder named CSCCache on your D: drive, specify the following value:

\??\D:\CSCCache

4. Now reboot your computer, run the Easy Transfer wizard again and apply the previously gathered files. Then reboot one more
time when prompted by the wizard.

Hi,

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 and noticed a problem recently when playing music via windows media center.

However, having played around in WMP11 also, WMP is doing the same thing so I believe the problem is somewhere in there.

Initially the problem started when trying to play a collection of mp3 files off my local drive. Whether it be via an existing playlist or simply by selecting an album within WMC.

The problem is that a track plays and then WMC/WMP freezes on the next track. If I skip to the next track that plays, but then the next track freezes. Sometimes the 1st track on the list doesn't play but the next will. Sometimes the 1st plays and then the next won't!

So, I closed WMC and opened up WMP directly. (This happens in both x86 and x64 versions of WMP by the way).

If I create a playlist, the same thing happens a track plays, then freezes, if I skip on, the next track plays and then the next one freezes.

It gets stranger...

If I go into the library and double-click on a track it may or may not play. If it did play, if I click on another track that one freezes. If it didn't play, the next track I click on plays and then the next freezes.

At first I thought this was simply a case of screwed up files.. it gets sillier.

If a track doesn't play when I double click on it, if I double click on it again it does play!!!

That's all well and good, but doesn't help when tracks are in a playlist.

A few other things of note.

We are leaving to go for a trip and since these digital files are in the correct format (.M4V) I thought I could import them onto our NOOK Color, however it errors out. It seems that the movie/s need to be in a certain resolution/format.

A:DNS Caching

In general, it's not going to do anything other than force the system to go out and repopulate the cache as you surf the web.

Also, if the DNS Cache is "poisoned" it can prevent you from reaching a website that you want to go to.

Hi all,

When you load a webpage, the files (images, ...) that the webpage contains will be downloaded. If the server hosting the webpage goes down while the files are being downloaded, then IE's Temporary Internet Files will contain partially downloaded files. When the server is back up and running, and you refresh the page, the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading, and will never be downloaded again. The webpage will never display the files that were partially downloaded, and the only way to fix this is to delete the Temporary Internet Files.

Other browsers do not have this problem. It looks like IE does not compare the file size in the Cache, to the file size on the server, but only compares the date, which is the same.

How to reproduce the problem (for developers):
-create a webpage that contains a big file (jpg, swf, or any file).
-on a client computer, clear the Temporary Internet Files, then start loading the page.
-before the file has time to finish downloading, stop and start the web server.
-look inside the Temporary Internet Files, and you will see a partially downloaded file.
-refresh the page, and the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading.

Note: I tried many different file headers, but it looks like whatever header you set for the file, even "no caching ..." headers, the problem always happens.

Hey,
I have been looking around for information about using a onboard msata ssd as a boot drive for fast start up etc.
I have found information about loading windows directly to this drive (setting this drive as c and lists of ways to move the my music files etc to another partition so that when windows starts it only reads program information. However it sounds as if all or most programs would be saved to the drive not windows only.
Other information has described setting this up as a cache via srt with the cache automatically recognizing whats used most often and storing it there saving the issue of less frequently programs slowing it down.

Does anyone use this system? Do you know of a good msata ssd?
Is it possible to set up a drive as a boot drive and only store windows there?
Can you use onboard msata as a boot drive for windows and another small ssd for srt caching?

Sorry about all the questions a total noob to msata and ssd caching. My mobo will have srt / onboard msata capability and Id like to use it.
If a thread already exists about this please let me know what to search by as I haven't found anything on mSata here.

Hello!

I am about to buy my SSD, but I don't know whether I can use the Crucial M4 64GB for caching, next to using it for my complete OS and a game (maybe two, 7 GB average). Because what I would like to do, is put my OS on it (Win7 64-bit) and the game. And then use (a part of) the space left (around 30GB, reserving 27GB for the OS and 3~4GB for the game) for Caching.

Will this work? Or can I only use the Intel SSD Caching on a empty SSD?

P.S. Someone told me I could only use ~20GB or 60GB for SRT Caching, I find this hard to believe, is it true?
P.P.S. Is it true I ought to put the SRT Caching to 64GB? Or would there actually be a difference if I would put my OS and Call of Duty 4 directly on my SSD?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

A:SSD SRT caching question

hmm; Personally I've never seen CACHING to be configurable.

Placing the pagefile.sys entirely on an SSD would seem doable . . .

Hi,

We use a WPAD file hosted on a Websense appliance and use IE11 on Windows 7 x64.

We are seeing some performance issues with the Websense delivery of WPAD and have discovered that every computer is making a large amount of calls to the websense appliance to retrieve WPAD.dat. (Up to 1000 per machine in some cases)

We have worked with Websense and found that they were returning a 'no-cache' option in the WPAD response header. Via a patch we have had this removed.
However I still can't find a cached WPAD file on my machine that I am using for testing and have checked all the registry entries I can think of related to caching.
Does anyone have any ideas?

For reference, the WPAD.dat is (edited of course):

var lhost = host.toLowerCase();
host = lhost;

So, it's time I asked a question. I've got this awesome little 7eeePC you've probably read about as I babble on about it like a schoolgirl in many of my posts and I'd like to show of it's WEI score to convince folks it's not quite as castrated as some have insinuated. Only, the machine will not complete system assessment complaining about write caching not being enabled. I try to enable it but

In order to shoehorn 7057 into under 3GB of space some things had to go. Like help. Can anyone tell me what that link there says or how I might fix this?

A:Write Caching

You could try to update the mainboard bios if there's a new version available. It won't definitely fix it to be able, but there is a decent chance. Also, the controller drivers should be updated to latest, if they are not already.

I have update accelerator running on ipcop proxy server set up and it is set to cache windows updates, sp3 and few other updates never completeley cache and just get bigger and bigger long after the offending PC has finished updating.

the extention of the updates with the problems is *.spf

A:Caching SP3 for Xp on proxy

Kept deleting and re-caching sp3. Finnaly worked ok. Same for some of the other *.spf updates. With others the problem is ongoing but I'm sure if I keep deleting and re-caching they will work eventually. If anyone has a more reliable solution I'd love to hear it.

Hi

I have a company network with 2 internal dns servers on 192.168.0.7 and 192.168.0.9.
Using DHCP.

2 problem Win7 clients.

When I run ipconfig /all on both it shows both DNS servers as expected

We have a corporate server on AWS and it's IP address changed on Monday during a restart.
Shouldn't have but it did, so we are stuck with a new public facing DNS name for that server, so we updated the friendly CNAME record to point to the new address.

18 of our 20 internal clients, including Win7, 8 and 10 clients and Mac and Linux clients are all finding the corporate server now using the original friendly name.

But 2 Win7 clients are still not getting there.

On both, if we run
nslookup <friendly.domname.com>

It returns the name of of our primary internal DNS server (as nameserver) and the NEW IP address of the host address

So it seems that the client's base OS DNS lookup returns the correct IP.

If I paste that IP into either chrome or Internet Explorer, I get the correct website.

However, if I enter <friendly.domname.com> into either browser (and Firefox) a different website appears.

I can in Chrome test the dns resolver using chrome://net-internals/#dns which returns a list of addresses in chromes internal cache.
And I can flush that browser dns cache by clicking the "clear host cache" button

If I then try the same <friendly.domname.com> again, the cache list is re-populated with a bunch of urls acce... Read more

I have all my external drives set to "quick removal" option, so I don't have to use the "safe-removal" option.

On my internal drives, I have it set to "Enable write caching."

It says that a power outage could cause data loss.
Since I always use the "sleep" option, is this option safe?

Thanks,

Paul

Hello Paul,

Unless you have power outages often, then I wouldn't worry about it set like that.

With explorer. Copy a large, say 700mb file from folder a to b on a regular HDD, should take 10-15 secs right. If you watch resmon, disk activity, you will see write activity to the destination folder for almost a full minute afterwards. Anyone know what's going on here? I don't have restore (previous versions of files) enabled either.

Guys, hoping someone can help me out...

I'm experiencing a problem when I'm browsing, in that there are Mbs & Mbs being dumped into my temporary folders.

I normally use IE8, but have also used Google Chrome and they both react in the same manner.

Approx 10 mins of browsing, plus a round of Tiger Woods Online can see as much as 150 Mbs be left in either the Temporary Internet Folder or Internet Cache (depending on the Browser used).

I have to run CCleaner on a regular basis, to stop slowdown due to this.

Has anyne else seen this, or can anyone assist in rectifying?

Thanks in advance.

A:Caching Issue

There is an Advanced>>Security option under IE Tools>>Internet Options to Empty the Temporary Internet Files folder when closing the browser. Alternatively, you can reduce the space allocation for the folder under General>>Browsing History>>Settings.

Hi guys, my USB HDD started showing the 'delayed write failure' pop-ups so I changed the properties to 'Optimize for performance' and enabled write caching (previously it was set to 'optimize for quick removal').

Now the HDD wont show up in any PC, not in explorer / disk management ......i have rebooted, unplugged and waited, opened the caddy disconnected HDD and put together again but nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, there is about 250GB of stuff on it lol.

Ok, so my hard drive in ACHI mode does not allow me to enable write caching but in compatibility mode it does.

Should I enable write caching?

Also this whole thing about memory loss is bugging me on what they are talking about. I have a laptop with a battery and mostly has power. But what if power were to cut off or it gets somehow unpluged, will my HD be corrupt? or would that "Word" document I was working on that was not saved be gone, everything else will be fine?

Thanks

A:Write caching

You can read this tutorial from Vistax64 on it. Basically, it's not recommended for laptops without a UPS. I believe if the power were to go out, only the temp. cache would be lost, so like your word document you were working on might be lost if it were to go out.
Hard drive speed boosts - Vista Forums
Also a tut on how to enable it with AHCI on, but I don't think it was relevant if you read all the comments in the tutorial.
Hard Drive Advanced Write Caching - Fix Cannot Enable - Vista Forums

But be notified that having it enabled has caused many to have a lower reported WEI score.

On another thread I had stated that there will be a performance hit if you turn off write caching for a SSD. But on second thought, I am not so sure any more.

What write caching allows (in my understanding) is to accumulate records in a buffer so that so that they can be written to the disk in one big swoop. That is an advantage on a spinning disk because all those records are written during the same rotation - and there is also only one seek for the arm.

I wonder though whether that brings the same advantage to the SSD where access time to any place is the same - and it is usually only 0.1ms. There would be an advantage if the records were written in larger blocks from the buffer because the SSD's write performance grows as the block size grows. But if records are still being written e.g. 4K at a time, there may not be an advantage.

Does anybody know whether the blocksize for the write operations increases with caching?

A:For the write caching experts

Hi whs - I see your point about the "write caching" and the SSD. Actually I think SSD's do write smaller blocks of data even faster than large sequential blocks so you could very well be right.

It would be interesting to run a series of tests with the "write caching" turned both on and off- Checking the Windows Disk WEI and checking the results of some of the disk benchmarking utilities (like HD Tune and ATTO).

At the moment I have my "write caching" turned on.

Hi there everyone -

My situation's this: got a computer loading roaming profile, server is running Win2K.

As I log off on the computer, this is the error message:

EVENT TYPE: Warning
EVENT SOURCE: Userenv
EVENT CATEGORY: None
EVENT ID: 1525

Windows has detected that offline caching is enabled on the Roaming Profile share - to avoid potential profile corruption, Offline Caching must be disabled on shares where roaming user profiles are stored.

For more information, see Hlep and Support Center at

So I went to the MS Support site and found this link:

BUT it doesn't solve my problem, because I don't have a share on a separate server, as the solution instructed.

.

Where is your roaming profile coming from if not the server?

If your saying its on the server but is not shared then I would suggest to make it shared as it should be (not sure how its working if its not) and then go in to the caching and disable it.

Hi all,

Quick question. I have a spare Agility 2 64GB SSD doing nothing so I'm wondering if I can use it as a pagefile drive for my OS drive which is also an SSD drive.

*NOTE*

All the threads I've read about this have all been about using the OS drive whether it be an SSD drive or HD for pagefiling. I want to use a SPARE SSD drive to pagefile FOR my OS drive.

Is this even possible and if so, how do I do it?

A:Using a spare SSD for Pagefile and caching

Yes, it is possible.

The general advice is not to do it, since it can shorten the life of the SSD because the pagefile is written to often and SSDs have their limitations in regards to that.

But things have gotten better: Taking a Hard Look At SSD Write Endurance - Slashdot

It's for you to decide. I say better to make sure you have enough system RAM (8 GB is starting to get into the "a lot" zone for 64 bit OS - on a 32 bit OS, 4 is "a lot".)

I see you have 24 GB of RAM installed. The pagefile still does certain things, but will be used much less than a system with say 4 GB RAM.

If you do it, make sure TRIM command is active in Windows.

All you would need to do is tell Windows to set the page file to the drive, while deleting the current page file. Nothing difficult.
