Windows Media Player stuttering when playing music files

Q: Windows Media Player stuttering when playing music files

Got a new computer at work (Dell Optiplex 760 w 3.25 GB RAM - running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3). When I try to play my music files (originally downloaded from purchased CD's on my old computer) on this new computer through Windows Media Player the sound is stuttering. Randomly. My IT dept. can't figure it out. I was running WMP v. 9 and today I updated to v. 11. It doesn't matter. Still stuttering. I have little Bose desktop speakers. When I go into the control panel on my computer and click on the "sounds and audio devices" icon it says SoundMax HD Audio. I'm assuming that's the sound card? The music files are local on my hard drive. It's driving me crazy....and I'm not a sophisticated computer user. Help. Thank you.

Preferred Solution: Windows Media Player stuttering when playing music files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently got a Zune and for the Zune software to work, WMP needs to work. A few months ago, it stopped playing music altogether. Not one song. It won't even play anything off of a CD, or on the internet. I was probably on the phone with Zune for 7-8 hours for them to tell me they couldn't help me. I was then connected to Microsoft, who told me I could call Acer or pay 60 dollars plus tax to Microsoft for them to help me. I called Acer and they said I would have to pay $60 per 30 mins. I don't have that kind of money right now and i just want my WMP fixed!!
Can someone help me please!!

A:Windows Media Player not playing music! please help!

Welcome
Here's an answer that someone found (seems like alot of trouble to me, syncing music to Att phone then back to,,,,)
http://askville.amazon.com/Zune-Win...edia-player/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=5785573

I suggest reinstalling the Media Player. Click Start, type Turn Windows features on and off

Uncheck the player, apply, restart Windows, recheck, apply, restart Windows.

The above may be a quick fix that won't last though?

Have you tried the free "Jet Player" - there's not much it won't play or burn and it will run circles around WMP.

Hope this helps as it seems you have found what others have - (it may be awhile before Microsoft decides to deal with this issue)

Hello,

I have a windows xp pro sp3 with all updates (as far as i know), 2 gb ram, 320 gig hard drive, radeon ati video card (forgot model number), amd 3200+, not sure why i listed my pc specs but ehh why not. anyways the title says it all, but to break it down, the problem is when i go to play my music in windows media player 11, it will make this terrible screaching sound (and thats for all music no matter what file extension it is .avi .wmv .mp3 etc.) after the screaching sound the music will sound very low then slowly it will begin to make the volume louder and louder till it gets to the correct volume setting that you set it (on computer or physically on the speaker). i have tried to see if other media players does this such as quicktime and itunes and they work fine, its only when playing in windows media player does it give me that screach sound at the beginning of everyone music/movie then it sounds low after a few minutes it will get loud again and sometimes get low volume then it will increase the volume, whats the matter anyone? could it be related to Divx, which i do have it installed on my machine however i am not sure if it all started when i installed divx, wasnt really paying attention nor was i using windows media player when i installed divx, please help its really annoying and would love to get this fixed.

Sounds like (no pun intended), your audio driver needs to be reinstalled. Drivers do get corrupted especially when you remove programs that require audio support.

First, try removing Windows Media Player (WMP) 11 in Add/Remove Programs, then reinstall it. Does the problem continue?

If so, try removing DivX. I do not think it is causing the problem, but could not hurt to try. Does it still continue?

I am running Windows 7 with the latest version of WMP 12. Everything runs properly, including use of the music library for playing tracks, burning, ripping, and syncing, except if any editing is done to the file metadata.

Occasionally I will purchase some music from Amazon which is in the form of several separate single mp3 tracks by the same artist. They will play fine as they are, but I would prefer to have them together as one 'album'. So I edit the metadata to include the same album name tag for each track. After saving this, the tracks all appear in the library as one album, which is just as I intended. The problem is when WMP is opened again, after closing it or shutting down the computer, all the tracks have disappeared from the library and WMP refuses to recognise them again. If I delete the tracks and copy them back into the same place again they appear perfectly fine in the library until WMP is closed. Then they disappear on running it again.

I have checked all the tags, comparing them with other music tracks that are recognised and I can see nothing wrong. I have checked all the sharing permissions for the folder in case anything was changed there and I have indexed the folder and run a search to 'let Windows know it's there'.

The unrecognised music tracks are in a folder which is included in the library, alongside all the other tracks that play ok, and I have used 'Apply media information changes' from the 'organize'... Read more

A:Windows Media Player not recognising music files

Try rebuilding the WMP library to see if that helps.

http://www.avsoft.nl/index.php/maintenance/how-to-rebuild-your-windows-media-player-library.htm

I would also check the tags on the Mp3 files with Mp3tag to see if the data is accurate.

I have a GatewayGT5662 with Windows Vista and Windows Media Player 11. I use it to listen to music or watch downloaded movies or what not. I also use it to stream my digital media to my PS3 to listen to or watch in my living room. Then one day it just doesn't play my music files any more!! It still plays all video files just fine, but any time I try to play a music file it says:

An audio codec is needed to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help.

I have the CCCP codec pack installed on my computer and have never had any troubles, I updated that pack and tried installing the klite pack as well but those don't seem to help. I really don't think it is a codec problem. Most of my music on my computer is from c.d.s though I have some that are downloads. Itunes plays my music library just fine, but won't stream to the PS3. Most of the music files are MP3's.

Hello,
This is my first post. I just installed Windows 7 and one thing is really annoying me. How do I shut off the feature that asks me to take ownership of every individual folder in my music files from my external drive before I can open them and add them to my media player library? I just want to add them the way I used to in XP or better yet just drag and drop the main folder into media player.

A:How do I add music files from external drive to media player library using windows 7?

This information should do the trick. You will basically take possession of the entire drive all at once instead of files\folders on at a time.I realize it says XP in the title but it should work for Win7 too.

My new laptop got my old music files from my old laptop via third party computer on a stick and media player 12 will not play wma files.  The files that won't play are ones I had the cd for.  I have tried several things none of which fixed it
to include contacting Microsoft and letting them run the computer.  The sfc scan has been run twice, the media player has been uninstalled and installed something  like three times.  VLC and iTunes downloaded and files downloaded to iTunes have
not converted to mp3 as expected, perhaps it is something with that I am not doing.  Many people on this and I appreciate the efforts

My uncle got DSL a couple of months ago and I've downloaded several large and small video clips and saved them to cd-rw's so that I could bring them home and put them on my computer, but I've encountered a problem when I try to view some of the clips. Some clips say ANOBOLIC when I try to open them and they won't play on either my laptop or my desktop pc, but I can open and view them fine on my uncle's computer. What do I need to download to fix this problem?

The other problem that I am having is that I saved some video clips that range from 15 to 30 minutes, and when I put the cd in either my laptop or desktop pc a couple of the clips say that they are 1 or 2 minutes when they are really 15 to 30 minute clips. I try to play them and they play for 1 or 2 minutes pause at the end and then move to the next clip, and when I fast forward the clip I am able to see some more of what wasn't shown in the first 1 or 2 minutes but it won't finish playing the whole clip. Again, I am able to view all of the clips perfectly on my uncle's computer.

At first I thought that the problem was with the cd-rw's, but since they work fine on my uncle's computer I have to believe that it is a problem with the media player. I've tried playing them with Realplayer and a couple other media players, but I keep having the same problem. Hello,

I have a memory card camcorder that records video as .ASF files (MPEG4 I think too) and until now have had no problem playing back the video files that I have recorded.

I've recently had to do a full system wipe of my computer due to various issues. Now I have a bang up to date version of Windows Media Player 10 as well as all the codecs packs. However the .ASF videos just won't play properly, the videos stop and start every second with huge gaps in between each frame. Windows Media Player also crashes with playing these files, I tried RealPlayer which also delivers exactly the same results.

I'm totally stuck with what to do,

Thanks for any help you will be able to give me in advance,

Martin

A:Trouble playing ASF files and Windows Media Player

Sounds like it might be a codec problem. Do a google search for a program called gspot (you can guess why I won't do one at work -.-;; ) It opens a file and reads what codec's its trying to use. Giving that output about the audio and video codec would let us know what those files are using in particular and can hunt down a way to fix it.

Hello there and apologies if it has been posted before (though I couldn't find it anywhere). I have two PCs running Windows Vista Business 32-bit since the RTM version. In other words they have survived long enough to download updates via Windows Updates, install both Service Packs etc.For some time now I experience the 10 - 25 second delay when playing a MP3 file in WMP. This delay appears to happen only once per Windows boot. Now, this does sound odd so I've tried to troubleshoot myself. When playing an MP3 file WMP launches mfpmp.exe file and this is how it's meant to be even though the files aren't DRM protected. Using Process Monitor I've found that before the process launches wmplayer.exe "pokes around" %systemroot%\system32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} folder. By "poking around" I mean querying file information (among other things) on most if not on every file. This introduces the delay during startup of playback as there are about 1400 *.cat files around. It can be clearly seen in Process Monitor summary that it takes even 25 seconds (depending on other hard disk activity) to "get through" the folder. It appears that the module responsible for file activity is CI.dll (code integrity). I would speculate that verifying the signatures (or whatever it's doing at this point) is a prerequisite to the launch of mfpmp.exe which plays the MP3 file. However WMP is checking the *.cat files that doesn't appear to be relevant to medi... Read more

Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of organising a playlist of music videos for my works Christmas Party. This year I want to do something really special in the form of streaming the music videos from one (host) computer to several (guest) computers using VLC Media Player.

Here is a link to the method that I am using to Stream music videos -

https://www.evernote.com/shard/s278...999ab741c93f/5e344d246d17fcd8415e999e4cb175b1

I have decided on the HTTP method of streaming because this appears to be relatively simple to setup, and effective for reaching multiple clients.

However immediately I have noticed a number of caveats -

1). Media doesn't always play at the same time on all clients. I would like all music videos to play in sync (ignoring potential network 'lag' issues)

2). VLC gets stuck with the Playlist of music videos that I have created; it plays the first music video on each of the clients, but once the first music video comes to an end VLC stops playing altogether.

* In some instances it just stops, and provides no on screen messages
** In other instances it pops up a box which I have come to believe is related to missing codecs (even though the 'server' and all 'clients' have exactly the same codec packs installed).

I am looking for some tips on the optimum way to stream music videos (in a variety of formats, e.g.: avi, flv, mpg, mpeg). Ideally I need to setup several hours of music videos and just hit the 'play button&... Read more

Are the songs listed in your playlist the ones that you tried to delete? Is the playlist an older one, created before you deleted the music?

You said you tried to delete a bunch of music. Did it actually delete?

If the songs were deleted WMP cannot find it in the location it was in when you created the playlist.

Example: If the music was originally in Folder A and you created a playlist/imported music to WMP from Folder A, they would play.

If you delete the music from Folder A (or move it to another folder) WMP is still pointing to Folder A but cannot play what is not there.

For almost every song, my Windows Media Player has a short stutter/lag during song playback. Sound quality is normal and there is no static or any other sort of issue. Only the really random, brief stutter, as if someone hit pause extremely quickly.

My setup is pretty much default...drivers are SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec (Windows auto-configured this itself). I have a Dell Vostro 1500.

I have a K-Lite Codec Pack installed, but I believe this only affects my video codecs (.mkv/.avi/.divx, etc.).

Is it possible that the desktop background slideshow can be causing this? I have it on cycle every 5 minutes, which does somewhat match my windows media player stutter timing. I checked this though, and the stutter doesn't quite always happen with the change of background. My other concern was maybe my anti-virus problem (Symantec Endpoint) could be causing this.

Does anyone else have this problem? Any ideas on what could be causing this stutter? I did not have this issue back with Windows XP.

A:Windows Media Player random stuttering

Did you try another player - e.g. VLC ( Download VLC Media Player 1.0.2 - FileHippo.com ). If that works, then you might have a codec problem indeed.

I have a network drive (Maxtor 300gb III) which is USB connected to a Linksys 350 Router (Wireless N w/ Storage Link). I have an admin (w/ Password) and user (no psswd) accounts setup. I can play the music I have stored on that drive from an XP machine, but not from Vista! It tells me the file is missing or drive is no longer available, which I KNOW is not correct. Does Vista block the network use of these files? I can play this music just fine if thru iTunes when directed to T(network drive):\itunes (so the media is playing from the network drive, not downloaded to the C: drive). This is music I have burned from CDs, and I have reburned a few just to validate their digital useage "rights." I play this media throughout my house thru different systems, I do not want it to be only available when connected to my vista box, (this same music plays without issue when USB connected directly to the Vista Box.

Your notes on the Admin issues when connecting to network shared drives resolved my initial issue, which was being able to log into the network share using the admin account.

A:How do I move music files from Download to Media Player ?

You should just be able to select all the files, right-click, hit cut. Then, go to the Music Library, right click and hit paste. Then Windows Media Player should pick them up when you open it, and you can burn them to CD from there.

Hi All! I'm hoping someone can help me with this very annoying problem. I have an Acer Aspire One Netbook with Windows XP. I have Windows Media Player Version 11. When I play music or videos that once played fine without any stuttering, are now constantly stuttering and slowing down. I've removed WMP 11 and reinstalled it. The same problem persists. I've tried to play the same music/vids on a VLC player and still get the same stuttering/skipping. I'm going crazy trying to figure our a solution and am hoping someone out there can help me out pretty please? Mahalos!

Okay, I am a real newbie at this itunes/ipod music stuff. My daughters have over 1,200 songs in my computer, so a friend transferred them to an external hard drive but for some reason they were copied in the vlc media player. Now they [my daughters] cannot access them to put them on their new ipods. Now I know that media player songs can be converted to itunes...but can vlc? I figure if I can get vlc to go back into media player then I can convert it to itunes.... (I hope!) Of course, the more direct route would be to convert it to itunes and skip the middle man (media player). I would hate to think that I would have to recopy each of these songs. BTW: I did click on the "play in itunes" but it wouldn't play there or in media player. In itunes I got nothing...in media player, I got an error message about not locating the file. This is so very confusing to me so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi All,
I have just bought a new machine with Vista Home Premium and it is running great but is not playing video files. I can hear the audio but no video. This happens regardless of whether it is playing inmedia player, or I am creating a DVD in pre installed movie maker or DVD Maker.

Is it just a codec pack or driver files it might be missing... or some other nasty?

Thanks in advance.... Beagleboy.

A:Playing DVD and AVI files in Media Player

You could be missing a CODEC, what type of file is it? This utility can tell you: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

There's also a chance that the video card driver needs to be updated, there's lots of little glitches with display drivers at the moment.

One winxp based systen having P4 processor, 512 ddr ram, cd-rw, cd-rom and 2 hdd (80+80 Gb), has this peculiar problem. When we playing songs it stutters and breaks as if the system running low on ram or using lot of processor power. When system is formatted, everything runs o.k for few days and even months, but again the problem comes up.

Can anyone help??

A:Stuttering sound while playing music ...

dunno d00d...how often do you defragment your drive?

and what specific media player are you using?..if it by chance is the internal LW player then that's the problem as it sucks....

So I upgraded from a Lenovo y510p around in August to a Y700 and immediately noticed that it was better at gaming back for everything else it was slow. I thought it must have been an update or maybe games but I have unistalled the games with plenty of space left and its driving me insane because even on slower laptops I will never have it get stuck or loading with simple stuff like youtube or selecting another song in windows media player. Any idea how to fix this? I have always set to High Perfomance mode, disabled tons of services from the boot and msconfig and very few applicactions running from what I know. Thanks

A:Lenovo Y700 Very slow and stuttering with Youtube and Windows Media Player

Hi takotakumi,  There are 2 posibile reason for the issue. 1st is software and the 2nd is hardware. Lets try to check both. For software try loading the system in safe mode, to check if there was any 3rd party software was causing the issue. If it is software issue, try and isolate the software causing the issue by un-installing the software.  For hardware try running Lenovo Solution Center or Lenovo Companion for hardware diagnostic back in windows normal mode. If you find any hardware issue after the diagnostic test then better to call Lenovo Warranty Support for assistance. You can get in-touch with Lenovo by clicking on the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page under Support. Also try updating the drivers for the video card of the system.Hope to hear from you soon. Cheers,

I am transfering my music files from an old Sony, Windows98, Media player7 to another machine, an HP, WindowsXP, media player9. When I try to play any of these tracks in or out of playlist it doesn't play them it pulls up internet explorer. Where it is trying to go I dont know as I am not online yet with that machine. I noticed in the Tools, Options, Privacy tab there are options that request information from the internet about the songs. There are check boxes that are empty next to them so I dont think they're enabled. I have fields empty for each track. Like Album, media info. Is it searching for that? Can I bypass the process?

A:Solved: Having problem playing transfered music from windows media 7 to windows media 9

Found problem, I protected the tracks when I downloaded them so when I go to transfer them & play them on this other PC it is pulling up internet explorer to get license confirmation. I won't do that again. Said something about limiting the number of computers to be played on after you protect them. Problem solved.

I've not long had Vista (Home Premium) and the windows media player that came with it used to play the .ts files that I'd exported from my digibox hard drive. Then - for apparently no reason - Media Player decided that it was no longer going to open the files, not even the ones that it had opened previously. It came up with the cood1199 error, but I don't understand why it's stopped playing them as it used to. It's infuriating. I don't want to have to download another program to play them when Media Player should - as it *did* - play them. Is there anything that I can do to get it to play what it used to play?

Have you tried a system restore back to when you know this worked or is this to far in the past? Have you tried to play the files with something like Realplayer. I know that you want to use WMP long term but this would confirm that it is a WMP issue.

Also found this link if it helps.

i am running window 7 home premium 64 bit on my hp probook 4530s recently hp did all of the bios an other updatto my laptop and now whenever i watch a video, listen to music or try to play a game it stutters i've tried updating an downgrading my graphic card driver my sound card the video card is a intel HD graphics 3000

plz help..... before all those updates it was playing just fine... system restore is out of the question cuz it takes up memory on HD so i deleted it

A:stuttering while listening to music and playing games

Audio is on a shared IRQ (Interrupt) with a higher priority device. Thus the higher priority device can interrupt the sound if it needs to do something and thus you can get the stuttering. There can be other reasons but this is one to consider.

Uninstalling the sound, restarting the PC and then when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound and sometimes Windows will install it on a different IRQ and help with this problem.

Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the sound and then LEFT click "uninstall". DO NOT check the box to also uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC.

I have just bought on-line, will only transfer music files with Windows Media Player 10.   The instructions for the music player, Samsung YP-Z5, says that you can only transfer files to the player when Windows Media Player 10 is installed on the pc, which you have to instal with the installation CD.  I have Windows Media Player 11 and Media Monkey on my pc, that I use for my other music player and Windows Media Player 12 and Media Monkey on my laptop.  Does that mean that the version 11, I have on my pc will be rolled back to 10 then? isn't that going to mess up my music.  I don't understand why it is an older version of Windows Media Player as I can't use it on my laptop. Can anyone help please.
