X230 powers down while battery is plugged in

Q: X230 powers down while battery is plugged in

My X230 powers down when I try to operate it with a battery connected. I've tried replacing the battery, but it continues to power down even with the replacement. I tried changing the power management settings to not shut down while plugged in if the battery gets critically low, but that didn't fix the problem either. It doesn't shut down when I run it on just AC power without a battery plugged in. This would be fine, but I need to run a BIOS update to fix a different issue I'm having, and I can't do that until I have a full battery connected that isn't going to cause it to shut down during the update.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi I have an acer aspire one 725 and I'm having some battery issues. The laptop will power up and run fine without a battery inserted, but when you insert one it immediately shuts down. I have tried with 2 brand new acer branded batteries

A:Laptop powers when plugged, but shuts down when battery

welcome to the forum....

its been seen at ours with several makes and as the batteries are new and branded, this narrows down the possibilities to points and the new battery short circuiting the laptop.

power down the machine, unplug the power supply. power the machine back on (battery). once its fully up and running plug the power supply back in....this should reset the power plan software.

now unplug the power supply and see if the machine stays on, which would be and sorted. if when you try to power the laptop back on and it doesn't light up.. then it is either physical damaged, such as a connector or a trigger within the system os.

I have been using my X230 for last two years without any problems and it still works fine except for one thing: very recently I have experienced a sudden power off a couple of times. I don't remember whether it was plugged but my battery is perfect for sure. While operating normally, the power suddenly went off. So I had to reboot it. This happened around 5 times last couple of weeks.  I realized that I have never done a system update since I purchased this so I tried to do that but it doesn't work. (See my another post below for this issue.) Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A:X230 suddenly powers off

I am experiencing a similar problem with my 2 year old ThinkPad x230 laptop. In my situation, the computer goes completely dead instantly on a random basis.  It is like the power supply just disappeared.  No attempt at a normal shutdown process.  Just instantly dead with black screen and no indicator lights.. In my situation the problem happens regardless of whether the computer is operating on battery only, battery + A/C supply or just A/C supply.  (Just in case I recently ordered a new OEM 44+ battery which has not arrived.) I have completely updated WIN 7 64 bit Pro, all drivers, and Lenovo Solution Center software. I scanned for viruses and malware using Norton, Norton Power Eraser and Malwarebytes:  all is shown as OK. I replaced the 180GB SSD drive with a new Samsung Model 850 SSD 500GB.  Same problem. Ran every hardware diagnostic tool I could find on system checking SSD, memory and all other hardware.  All reports as fine.  CPU temperature is 45-52 degrees C max.  SSD temperature is about 34 degrees C.  No noticeable hot spots on case. Updated BIOS.  Same problem. Disabled hibernation.  Same problem. (Perhaps related is a message from Lenovo Solution Center that a hidden (non-lettered) partition on the SSD is 95% full.  I assume this partition, which is labelled "Data" like the D:/ partition, is some sort of system related log or backup sep... I recently purchased an x230 and everything is perfect but the battery fit.  It moves up and down slightly.  I know there are many posts in the lenovo forums for all different models that the battery fits lose in "x" model and solutions of putting paper / foam / tape to make the battery fit tighter.   What I'm wondering is if anyone has actually had the problem fixed by lenovo.  I've read a few posts where a user has had the base piece of the case replaced (where the battery fit's into) and that has solved the problem.  I'm still within my return period on my x230 and am awaiting a call back from tech support to see if there is anything they will do but I don't think I will keep it if they can't fix it.   I'm just curious has anyone actually had luck by replacing the base piece.  From what i've read a replacement battery hasn't worked for anyone.  Also, I know everyone says its by design for thermal purposes but I haven't actually seen any official confirmation of this from lenovo.   Thanks.

A:Battery Loose / Battery wiggle in x230 and LENOVO ...

As a follow up, I'm just curious if this is a widespread issue?  Anyone have loose battery in their x230 / x220?  I'm not talking about it falling out...but just a few millimeters of wiggle room.  Basically when i pick mine up or place it down, I can feel / hear the battery move.  I'm just trying to get an idea if this is a real problem or thats just how every thinkpad is.  I called support and they are sending someone to replace the base panel and we'll see if that fixes it.  I'll update this post when it get's replaced.   Edit* I also asked the lenovo support rep if they had heard of this issue and they said no, never.  I don't see how this is possible as if you do a google search for thinkpad loose battery there are many results.

I have a refurbished X230 that works great aside from this issue. I noticed it would not charge, but when the computer ran out of battery and shut down, I plugged it back in and it *did* charge, that time. I then tried a few things including taking the battery out, which turned the computer off, which then allowed it to charge. When I plug the AC adapter in, the battery light in the back will blink twice in green, then go back to red (if battery is low) or remain off (if battery level is normal).  Yesterday night I turned the computer off, plugged it in, turned it on, and saw it was charging. It charged to 97% and then showed up as "plugged in, not charging" this morning. If the computer is charging and I unplug it, then plug it back in, it will not resume charging. All of this leads me to think it isn't a hardware problem with the charger or battery itself (which holds a charge just fine). I also tried a different charger I had for my old T420 which fit, but had the same issue. Any advice?

Hello there,

I have an one year-old ASUS K53S Laptop, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bits, 6GB Ram and 500HDD.

At the beginning, my battery lasted >3 hours in Balanced power mode (which is the one I alway use) and now due to regular use it last about 2 hours.

Everything normal until here. About 2 months ago, i started playing this game in full screen with the battery on and it last about 30-40 minutes until it reached the low battery warning (11% left). I would then plug the power on and resume the game, charging the battery as well.

After a few weeks, the warning stopped appearing in the desktop and the computer automatically hibernated (5% left) with the game still on. So i plugged the ac power on and resumed the game right away.

This kept happening from that moment on: every time i played the game it would reach 5% battery left and hibernate for itself, whereas it should appear the low battery warning at 11% left where I would plug in the ac power and charge the battery without going into hibernation.

On top of that, my sister kept stealing my ac charger for charging her Toshiba Satellite as she often forgets her own charger at her workplace!

Now, at the present day, when the battery reaches about 15-20% left, the laptop power off unexpectedly, as if I had pull the battery off of the laptop.

It must be from all those time it would reach 5% left, with the game still on, that "tired" the battery and now it won't even last further than 20% left...

It might ... Read more

Ok...so I am new to forums, but not really new to pcs. But...without having parts to really test with, I need ideas on whats wrong with mine.

I have a custom built pc (about 2 yrs old). Its got:
AMD X2 2.6 cpu
2 GB ram
250gb sata hdd
GeForce 7600gt video card

It worked fine since I got it. I came home the other day and it had shut down for no reason. I checked all the plugs and wires, everything was fine. When I unplugged the AC and plugged it back in, the PC started without me even hitting the power switch. However, the CPU fan stopped while the rest continued (hdd spinning, optical, PSU fan running, lights on etc). There were no beep, no boot and no video output. I have tried a new PSU, new ram, unplugging extras, the works. The only things I can't test are the CPU and mobo (I dont have spares to test with). If I hold the power switch or hit the reset switch, nothing happens. I have to physically unplug it or switch off the power supply to stop it.

This may be completely simple, and Im either having an off day or Im missing something. Do you all think I need a new mobo? (that was my line of thinking, but want to get some advice before I shell out the money)

Thanks for any ideas or help.

I work as a repair tech at a system manufacturing company and I have to repair a large number of system each day. What I noticed is that I get a large amount of systems that power on as soon its plugged in. The ones that don't post I won't waste much time with, but it's the ones that post and burned tested without problems that has me perplexed. All the systems have no operating system.

With problems like Bios settings, WOL and Last State, Power Supply, and CMOS battery aside (have access to fresh equipment as needed) even when the motherboard is taken out and placed with minimum setup (PS, MB, 1 working Mem, 1 working CPU, fresh battery) it would still turn on as soon as its plugged in.

So I'm hoping somebody can give me their opinion. I'm not looking for an answer so much as if there can be any additional possible problems and solutions. Changing MB's are an option its just that I want to keep it as a last resort.

Thanks in advance

After booting my laptop, Win98 fully loads and within 5 minutes my hard drive powers down. This will happen whether I am active on the system or not. After rebooting a second or third time, I have no more trouble.

The HD is 2 years old and I just had a local repair shop check it out and they found no problem with the drive itself.

I have eliminated startup programs and/or virus software as the cause. I have also elimated power source problems.

My usb port is hooked to my cable modem. I tried unplugging the usb cable at the modem end, but still had the problem. But if I unplug the usb cable from the computer, the problem stops.

Could my usb port be the problem ??????

when using ac power the laptop powers up immediately when the power cord is plugged in. I've looked and

looked through the choices for power options, plans, etc... and haven't found anything about this particular

setting. I'd like it if when I plugged it in it would wait until I pressed the power button, I haven't found

anything indicating this is default with no option to change it, if it is I can live with it but would rather use

the power button to turn it on.

Hello,
Another post to show how bad dell hardwares are:
My laptop powers off suddenly whenever I plugged in the charger. When it runs in battery, it is fine. But as soon as I plugged in, it powers off.
I purchased new battery ---> no change, still powers off when AC adapter plugged in.
I replaced AC adapter ----> no change, still powers off when AC adapter plugged in.
Removed battery and when run only in AC power---> powers off.
Now what I have to do? Replace the mother board?
Let me tell you how bad your hardware *** is:
1. Back in 2012, when I purchased this I got mic/camera not working issue. Called Dell and they replaced the entire mother board for this. ( since it was in warranty, I was quite OK with that ). But wondered how bad the hardware is. i.e within six months of purchase hardware failure.
2.  Once when the warranty got over, immediately after one year another issue came up. It won't charge the battery while plugged in. This time I contacted Dell and they replaced the whole motherboard (sigh!!!) for this. They charged INR 10,000 for this.
3. Next after a year after the above incident happend, they keyboard didn't work. I purchased a new one and replaced it myself.
4. Now, when I plug the AC adapter to charge the laptop, it immediately powers off. I'm 100% sure again I have to change the motherboard. ( I'm not sure the mother board for this model is in stock or not ) .
This is a series of hardware failure within 4 years. I heard that D... Read more

Hi,The Power Manager settings as well as the battery parameters are stored in the registry. So if PM could be removed at all (!) those parameters should be reset. But I hope it's not a single solution.I'm not sure will it help or no, but you might perform the following steps:- PM menu (mouse right click on the battery icon), "Remove and Replace Battery" item,- battery reset. Also let me give you another advice: change the battery charge thresholds for its healthy and lifespan, do not charge it fully.

I have an XPS 9550 6th Gen running Windows 10 (Just over 1 year, out of warranty).
The issue is when the charge plug is plugged in and hovering over the battery icon it says that battery is charging.  However the battery is not charging but discharging until the laptop switches off.  The only way for the battery to charge again is to deplete the battery until the laptop is unresponsive when the power button is pushed to switch lap top on.  Once there is no residual power in the battery it will start charging again to 100% after which the cycle repeats, discharge.
Things I have tried.
Latest Bios update - no change
Another A/C charger - worked ok for a few days
Replaced battery - no change
Bios settings - reset to default (info related to battery and A/C charge reports all good)
F12 - Dell diagnostics, reports all good
When Battery is disconnected the laptop works normally
The laptop charge socket seems tight and secure
I have searched the internet exhaustively but have not found this same issue reported.  The only feasible way I can use the laptop is to disconnect the battery.
Can anyone suggest anything?
I would also like to disable the battery instead of having to open it up to disconnect, is this possible?

It didn't fix my problem. I also used HP Support Assistant's HP Battery Check diagnostic tool. It says my "battery is functioning correctly, but the AC adapter is not attached. To completely test your battery, please attache the AC Adapter." The strange thing is, my AC adapter is plugged in, but the computer thinks it is not attached. So it is not recognizing my AC adapter when the battery is in. But does recognize and use the AC adapter when the battery is removed.  Does anyone have any recommendations for a fix? Thank you!

Hi, I have read many people have similar issues for other models other than my Thinkpad x240 20AL but removing the battery won't solve my problem. It is plugged in, it says plugged in but battery is not charging (none of the two batteries this laptop has). I have gone to Driver Manager and uninstalled the 3 Microsoft drivers under battery section. After restarting or scanning for new hardware these drivers appear again and the problem is not solved. I have restarted de computer. Problem not solved I have removed the batter and put it back. Problem not solved. After one night, I switched on the laptop and one of the battery has charged. Right now it says plugged in, charging and it shows already 100% although it keeps charging. The other battery still shows 98% not charging.. I believe this must be a software issue, some power management that prevents the laptop from charging the battery. But where is that software and how to configure it or remove it? I have looked for Lenovo Power Management and similar and it is not installed on my laptop. Anybody knows what I am talking about?

For a few months now, at some point my battery would indicate nn% (plugged in, not charging) and would maintain that charge as long as it was plugged in. Running on the battery, the charge would eventually diminish and in order to get the battery to charge again, I have gone through to process of uninstalling the ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery in Device Manager. Usually within 24 hours, things would revert back to plugged in, not charging. However, that is no longer remedying the problem. (When this was an issue the indicator light next to where the AC Adaptor plugs in would flash blue. Also, I upgraded from Win 8.1 to 10 a few weeks ago, but this issue has been occurring for a few months now). Now the battery reads 2% (plugged in, not charging) and when I use the HP Support Assistant to check the battery, I get the message ?HP Battery Check was unable to access the battery?. I have performed a hard reset, reset the BIOS, and updated the BIOS, all to no avail. If I unplug the adaptor, the computer shuts off. Any suggestions for additional fixes? I have seen one additional suggestion to do a system recovery but I have not yet made a recovery disk for win 10 (I do have one for the win 8.1), and would it make any difference anyway since the plugged in, not charging problem was occurring under win 8.1?

Hello all,

I got a HP 530 laptop (vista home basic) from a friend to fix. It only powers on with battery power and not with ac power. If after powering up, you insert the ac adapter, it works fine although the battery doesn't charge.
I'm thinking of upgrading the bios.

Pls, what do you think could be the problem?

Thanks,
Popekay.

Hi, 1. I have recently bought a 9-cells battery (1 week ago) for my thinkpad x230. I use windows 7 64-bit and I have installed Power Manager. 2. I have performed Battery Gauge reset. 3. The FRU number on the battery is "FRU P/N 45N1027". However, on Power Manager it says that is "FRU P/N 45N1029" and 7 cycle count. 4. Condition is Poor and the battery can store 65% of the its original full charge capacity according to Power Manager (56.58Wh out of 86.58Wh). 5. I tried to update battery firmware but I could not because it says that it  not need update. Question Q1. Is the Battery Genuine (You can check attached)?Q2. Is the battery damaged and need to return it back?Q3. Is there anything else I could do for this battery? Thanks all in advance.Nikolaos

We have several Lenovo B50's which we are noticing are powering themsleves off  randomly, the laptop then refuses to turn on dispite the power cable being plugged in and gives a red/orange flashing light. We know that this is due to the power supply not being connected in time and the battery running down too low for the laptop to function . The light continues to flas even if the power supply is plugged back in after shutdown. and the laptop will not restart until the light turns to a solid state. However we are noticing that the laptop only seams to be lasting about 2 hours in total with normal used (tested with a youtube video being played). I have also read articules that say that the battery normal starts to go into sleep mode at around 14% which we think maybe desciving staff. Has anyone had the same exsperiances with this? we are running Windows 10 and have already changed all the power settings to never sleep etc.

I have my lenovo x230 laptop set to sleep when I close the lid. When I close the lid the "sleep" icon on the back of the screen lights up. But the batter will not last through the night on sleep mode. Within five hours or so, the battery is completely drained and I have to plug in and boot up the system. I've never seen such poor batter performance during sleep mode on any other laptop I've ever owned.  Another thread in this forum blames the USB port that allows you to charge mobile phones/etc. during low-power states and recommends disabling the "always power on" option fo this USB port in the Bios settings. I've done so, be it doesn't seem to have helped. At least my laptop still will not make it through the night in sleep mode.  At this point, it seems my ownly option is to use sleep mode only when the laptop is plugged in and hibernation mode when on batter power, which is disappointing. I've never had to worry about this in the past with other laptops.  Perhaps/probably related is the fact that the lenovo ThinkVantage Power Manager (v. 7.16) hangs at the splash screen when I try to open it, so I've been trying to manage the power through the windows control panel power settings.

How old is the battery? You do not have a Battery #2 more than likely. That would be the optional modular battery not the regular main battery.

Hi,
I am writing this as I have hopelessly tried all methods found online without success.
I have an XPS 15 bought in France. I move to Singapore and my original DELL AC adapter was spoiled. So I went to the nearest store and bought a third party adapter. Everything works out fine for a while... Now, my laptop won't charge anymore (stuck at 90%).
My laptop only turn on if it is plugged under ac adapter. When I unplug the ac adapter, my laptop turn off.
When I turn on my laptop it says "this battery charging is temporarily disabled, press F2 for entering BIOS Menu". In BIOS, under battery health it is said "this battery is temporarily disabled, please turn off the computer and try again when the unit is back to operational temperature" I have this problem systematically, my laptop is not heated.
I even bring it to a repair shop here in Singapore; but they do not even have the parts to test.
Please help.
I am willing to buy a new battery or new adapter, but I am not even sure if that's the problem.

Thank you

I have a Dell inspiron 15 M5010 and i recently bought a new battery. It's not a Dell battery but a Ninja Battery. As i started charging it i noticed it doesn't charge. I thought it was a defective battery so the company sent me a new one. It didn't make a difference.
Is it my AC Adapter? or because i need a Dell battery? I tried everything except update the BIOS because it needs at least 10% battery to run. Sadly i have 5%. Please help.

Hi there! I've been having a problem with my charger for a while now but it wasn't serious until recently. A month or two ago, my charger went from working completely normally to suddenly not being recognised. This wasn't a big deal, however, because by holding the charger a certain way to the left (kind of twisted) or bringing it underneath the laptop, it would charge like normally. For the past few weeks, however, a notice has been popping up saying

"The AC power adaptor type can not be determined" and then that follows up with a message underneath that stating that I should use a dell charger (this is the original dell charger we got with the laptop)"

This message however didn't matter back then because, by twisting the charger a bit, it would charge and so the message was irrelevant and would only pop up when the charger was plugged in and not twisted (as far as I can remember)

Over the past couple of days, though, i've noticed for my battery sign to sometimes randomly change to an X and, when you hover over it, it says "no battery detected." It will then randomly, a second or two or a few minutes later switch to "plugged in, not charging" and then to "plugged in, charging"; fluctuating randomly and for different intervals of time between these signs. This as well wasn't much of a problem as my laptop was still charging at times and therefore I knew it wouldn't run out.

Now, however, the... Read more

What is the exact model of Dell laptop you have? Look underneath on the label for Model information
For Dells of that time period, you must use a genuine Dell replacement AC adapter or you will get the reduced performance at startup message.... the Dell adapters so I have read, have a chip inside that informs the BIOS of the laptop that they are indeed, genuine Dell adapters.

Read about this issue here- and especially about the little test you can do before your power is all gone- you should do it just once, and I think you will get the "Unknown" message....

http://www.laptop-junction.com/toast/content/inside-dell-ac-power-adapter-mystery-revealed

Note that there is more than just one thing that can be wrong- the motherboard, the adapter chip, the power jack.... Please do NOT attempt the adapter repair at that site.... The power jacks can be replaced by a good repair shop that does soldering on motherboards.

test yours and if you do need a Dell AC adapter they can still be found but it does take some hunting since a LOT of helpful sales sites claim "Genuine Dell Replacements" but I have tried some of those and they did not work but when a real Dell AC adapter was connected, that BIOS message disappeared.

look on the label of the LAPTOP and see what AC Adapter watt rating ....ex: 65watt or 90w..... yours calls for and purchase the correct model.

I can help you find a genuine Dell if needed but test things first. Hope you can do this before the ba... Read more
