I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Help!! I have a new (ish) laptop and everything has been fine until a couple of days ago when a red cross appeared on the speaker icon.  I've run the diagnostic tool by clicking on the icon but only my Bose wireless headphones appear in the list, and the tool is unable to resolve the probem with the speakers.  When I use the Bose wireless headphones, the red cross goes and the headphones work fine.  I've tried the Device Manager too to clear the red cross issue, but cannot find a way for it to help resolve the problem. The laptop doesn't have any sound from the speakers, nothing.  If I plug normal/ regular headphones into the jack, then the Bang & Olufsen message appears on the screen to notify that the headphones have been connected, but there is no sound from the headphones and the cross remains on the speaker icon. If I hover over the red cross then a message appears "no speakers or headphones are plugged in"

Hello @George73,  Before we go to the software part of this red x volume icon we will first have to check if your hardware is operating in the necessary parameters. Move the mouse pointer over the lower right side of the screen for the ?Charms? bar to open.Left click or tap on the ?Settings? feature you have in the charms bar. In the search box you are presented in the ?Settings? feature you need to write ?Device Manager?. After the search is finished you will need to left click or tap on the ?Device Manager? icon. If you are prompted by a window you will need to type in the administrator account and password to go further with the steps below. Double click (left click) on the ?Sound, video and game controllers? feature in the device manager window. In the expanded menu in the ?Sound, video and game controllers? feature look to see if you have there a sound card and if it is properly installed. Note: if it is not properly installed you will see a yellow sign next to it or you won?t have a sound card present in that menu. If you have a yellow sign next to the sound card you will need to left click on that icon. Left click on the ?Properties? feature after you clicked on the sound card. Left click or tap on the ?General? tab you have in the properties window. You will have a box under the ?Device status? feature and you will see in that box what exactly the issue with... I am connected to a network and have internet access.

However, the network status icon has a red cross on it as if i am not connected. Even more strange is if i hover over the icon its read "Network Internet access"

I don't use any third party connection software and don't have any third party firewalls running.

I am plugged in direct to the router with an ethernet cable.

This isn't a massive problem but i'd prefer the icon not to have the red cross on it.

Dear all,

I am in dire need of help to fix my laptop sound card. My laptop (TOSHIBA M600 on windows vista basic as its original operating system) has been working perfectly for the last 3 yrs. Just about 3 weeks ago the the volume icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen had a red cross marked on it. I am no longer able to listen to online lectures, music, videos etc. I opened the device manager and found no such things as Sound, video and game controllers. This happened after one of my friend installed a faked windows 7. Since then i decided to buy and re-installed a legal window 7 professional, but the problem persists. The volume icon at the bottom of the screen still has a red cross on it.

Some kind people out there please help me...i am a student and cannot afford it to be fixed by those expensive computer genius in the computer store. Also....please use simple lay people english when you give instructions or help.

Thank you so much in advance
Noelu

A:Portege M600 - Volume icon has a red cross on it

Hi buddy,

Usually such a red cross means that there is a no sound driver installed or driver is muddled up? Have you already tried to reinstall the sound driver?

What sound card you have installed?
Normally you can get all drivers on official Toshiba website but for an older model like yours I could imagine that you must check other pages. For example if you have a Realtek sound card, check the Realtek page directly: www.realtek.com

Troubleshoot that I had done so far :

Hi shah-aijaz, Sorry to hear that you are having issues with the wifi on your notebook. I have done some research and I have found that the computer that you have listed does NOT have Windows 7. Are you certain that you are giving the proper model number of your computer?  Please check the bottom of your computer and the product number should be listed on a white sticker by a bar code.

Please write back at your convenience.

Ive been using W7 since the early builds and am on HP 32bit these days.
In the past if i lost internet connection i would get a red cross on the network icon. This would go away once connection was restored.
This past week or so this cross keeps appearing. Thing is the connection is fine, no problens what so ever.

Anyone else experienced this. Please no "Clean install" replies, thats way to drastic.

Thanks for any help.

A:Nework icon has a red cross on it but connection is fine

It sounds as though it could be a driver issue. On the odd occasion when I lose connectivity, it's only to the Internet so my icon just shows a yellow triangle with the exclamation mark superimposed on it. Fortunately, my router automatically reconnects if this happens, so I'm not down for more than about a minute.

As your board is based on the NVidia nForce 570 SLI MCP, you could try to see if these drivers might help (make sure that you create a restore point prior to installing) NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.53 WHQL

A:why does the icon of my computer (drive c) is changing to a red cross symbol?

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello,

My Dell-VOSTRO laptop is kinda in a weird situation now with spyware, and hopefully someone can help me fix this. It's been bugging me for the past 3 days. The problem is on desktop bottom right corner, where the volume icon and msn icon are, there is always a round red icon with white cross pops up something like this:

"Your computer is infected!

Windows has detected spyware infection!

It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to pervent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you.

Click here to protect your comupter from spyware!"

I know this is a spyare spam try to trick you to install their program and not a real windows warning, so I haven't clicked it yet. but I just can't get rid of it. I've tried quite a few things, but nothing works.

There is also a weird thing is that I can't run HijackThis on this laptop, I even renamed it to "Fumble" as someone previous suggested, but it still won't work. Once you double click on the icon, nothing happens. Therefore, I don't really have a HJT log to post. I did follow the steps to run a Panda virus scan and attached the log. Hope it helps in some degrees.

Someone, please help me on this to get rid of that red round icon with the white cross spyware or let me know what need to be disabled to get HiJackThis running to produce a log for you guys.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Windows 7 32-bit won't play sound.

Device Manager\Sound, video and game controllers\High Definition Audio Device ok.
Double click and window says:
High Definition Audio Device Properties\General: Device status says This device is working properly.

Speakers are plugged in and make a crackle when plugging in to correct holes.

Mystery?

A:Sound/Mixer icon has red cross. No Audio Output Device is installed.

If it's shown as "working properly" in the Device Manager, the speaker icon you have can also be because the sound is muted.

You show "High Definition Audio Device" rather than the actual sound device which suggests you have the generic Windows/Microsoft installed sound driver rather than the actual sound driver from the motherboard vendor. In many cases the generic Windows driver does not work or work correctly.

You can try and uninstall/reinstall by RIGHT clicking on the entry for the sound and then LEFT click "Uninstall" (DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of flakey problems.

If the uninstall/reinstall does not fix it, the next step is to get the correct sound drivers and install them.

I have no sound as of this afternoon. Also, my speaker icon has disappeared.... and when I try and access my volume control through Start/Programs/Entertainment/Volume Control NOTHING happens, nothing at all.

Someone suggested a driver problem. In my device manager, there is a yellow mark next to what I think is my sound card. When I try and update the driver, it says that it is already installed and I then reinstall it.

This is very confusing. Is there any site that will scan my PC for drivers needing updating at no cost? Any help would be appreciated.

For about 2 months now the speaker icon in the systray has been missing. I've been to control panel>sounds and multimedia and the area to checkmark to show it is grayed out. Tried the replace the sndvol thing from the cd, but didn't help. Also, reinstalled the software for my card.

As I say, this is minor since my SoundBlaster live card still puts out sound. Just annoys me.

Any help is much appreciated.

PS, I'm spyware, virus, trojan and worm free, with all windows updates.

Thinking my sound card went bad I removed it and even did a full system restore. I still have the red x and no sound. Looked for the on board sound in the bios thinking it needed to be activated but, do not see it anywhere.  Have speakers plugged into onboard sound card jacks and also plugged headset into jacks at top of tower.
AMD high definition audio device is listed as working properly in the device manager. I even tried uninstalling it and rebooting. It came back in device manager but, still no sound.
Tried downloading driver from dell. Installation failed because new driver is same as driver already installed. (read log)

In addition to software control, Notebooks have hardware control, usually a keyboard combination of the Fn plus another key to change volume or mute. Some Notebooks, such as a Gateway I've just Upgraded to Win10, have a multimedia control above the keyboard that is swiped to raise or lower the volume.

I have just downloaded a modem driver for my motorola phone because the motorola software was not recognising the phone anymore . After I had downloaded the software from motorola it still did not find the phone so i gave up on that . Now i have no sound - no speaker icon in the tray or anywhere else .I have followed the windows troubleshooting thing but it made no difference . I have looked in the device manager and the original soundmax info is still there along with a new "modem 0".In the sound device box it shows the "modem 0" as the sound device but it used to be the soundmax digital audio one . Before I start fiddling should i remove the "modem 0" thing to reinstate the original sound device ? If so how ?
Thanks in advance . Kind regards peter lakey
.

A:HELP !no sound no speaker icon

Control Panel / Sounds & Audio Devices / Audio tab

Make sure your Soundmax is showing as the default device.

Hi all,

I have this annoying problem where if I have the speaker volume muted, my system removes the icon from the taskbar? I have tried locking the taskbar but it still does it. I have to open the control panel and first uncheck the option to show the speaker icon on the taskbar, and then re-check it to make the system put it back on the taskbar.
Anybody have ideas how to make it quit doing this?

Right click on your taskbar and then click properties.

Do you have "hide inactive icins" selected? If so unselect it and see if your speaker icon remains in view all the time instead of sometimes.

1. Right-click on the Taskbar (the bar at the bottom of the screen) and choose Properties.

2. Under the ?Taskbar? tab, look for the button that says ?Customize? and click it (this is to customize the notification area).

3. In the new window, look for ?Volume? under the list of icons. Out to the right, click the drop-down menu and choose ?Show icon and notifications?.

4. Click OK to close that window, then OK again to close the Properties window.

I had a problem with a program that I installed, that required me to do a System Restore, which for the most part seems to have corrected the problems, but one remains that has me puzzled. Normally, upon rebooting the speaker icon has a red x for a second or two before disappearing, but now it doesn't disappear. The sound is working okay, the sound mixer doesn't show anything muted or awry and there is nothing amiss in the Device Manager's sound section, so what is with this X?

Something changed in either registry or device driver. Is there anything not working?

I have no Speaker Icon (Volume Icon) on my System Task Bar. I am using my Motherboard's on board Audio. I have installed the latest sound drivers. If I go to Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Volume it says no audio devices. I have a Asus P4P800 Deluxe Motherboard and have Sound Max installed. I do have sound from my DVD player, and window sounds. Why do I not have the Speaker Icon and why do I not show a Audio Device in Sounds and Audio Devices. Please Reply. Thank You

HI,
My pc confg is as - cpu core2duo intel 2.93 ghz, board gigabyte GA-G41MT-ES2L. My os is WIN 7 32BIT. I have installed original drivers supplied by gigabyte. when I open audio interface it gives messages like -front jack pin is installed, back jack pin is installed and so on messages. Also the Audio Manager panel display flashes. Speaker sound becomes on and off. Speaker icon at notification area dances. I tried to resolve this problem by installing fresh os, xp ant even downloaded and installed fresh drivers from gigabyte site.

Is there problem with on board audio?

A:Audio speaker icon dancing

It sounds like a problem on the motherboard.
But, reinstall the Intel motherboard chipset drivers, from the Gigabyte site and then reinstall the RealTek drivers from the Gigabyte site and see if that makes a difference.

My computer is Acer Aspire AM5621-E5612A that came with Realtek Highdef Audio. Since last week there's been an 'x' mark on the speaker icon in the taskbar and can't do anything with that. When I right-click on the speaker icon and click on "Open Volume Mixer", it says "no audio device is installed". Clicking on Playback Devices, Recording Devices or Sounds, don't show up anything. When I place the cursor on the speaker icon, the bubble says: Volume: 0 Speakers: Realtek Highdef Audio. In Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Sound, there's no sound icon and nothing happens when I click on any of the three options: Adjust, Change, Manage. In Device Manager->Sound, Video and game Controllers, I have three devices: AMD Highdef Audio Device, Cyberlink Webcam Virtual Driver, Realtek Highdef Audio. When I click on any of them, it says that the devices are working properly but all of them have "?" marks on them. All the things happened when last week I lost the sound completely for no reason. The sound came back when I updated Realtek audio driver with the latest Realtek HD Audio Manager. When I right-click Realtek Audio Manager icon in taskbar and click on Volume Control, I get the same message: No Audio Device is installed. What could be the reason for that and how can I get all the sound devices back as before? Thanks!

A:Speaker icon in taskbar has a 'x' mark on it

Your best bet is to try going back with a system restore.

Friends: Of recent I have noticed my speaker icon in the taskbar disappeared. I unchecked then re-checked the icon in Control Panel and it reappeared. However, when I rebooted the icon was gone again. I spent hours trying different solutions on the net, but nothing seems to work. Has anyone had a similar problem who can offer a working solution? Thanks for any help.
