Compaq Presario CQ56 is connected to network, but has 'no internet access'

Q: Compaq Presario CQ56 is connected to network, but has 'no internet access'

My compaq presario cq56 laptop has been connected, via wireless, to our home broadband network for ages, but suddenly it's not working. A yellow triangle with an exclamation mark has appeared over the bars of the internet symbol in the system tray, and it tells me it's connected, but that there's no internet access.
All the other computers on the network are fine (one laptop, connected wirelessly,. and a desktop connected via cable). I have called TalkTalk and they have checked the connection, concluding that its fine. I have also been in contact with the manufacturer of our router (Belkin). After changing lots of settings around, they told me it must be an issue with the network adapter (?) on my laptop. I can't actually find any support from Compaq/HP themselves. Please help!!

Preferred Solution: Compaq Presario CQ56 is connected to network, but has 'no internet access'

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Look under device manager to see if there's any yellow exclamation marks.
From the command prompt run ipconfig /all then post results.

Hi,

I have a Compaq Presario C300 notebook. I have excellent strength connection to the wireless connection at home (and if I try to plug in the cable, the wired connection works too). However, when I open a browser (IE and Firefox), it does not connect and comes with the standard error message of "...site could be temporarily busy, ...check your computer's network connection,......if your computer's network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

I tried reinstalling the network driver, also the firewall settings but no luck. I have no clue how to solve this problem because my other laptop and PC are working perfectly fine and so I feel it is THIS laptop's problem.

Thanks in advance,

When I turned on my laptop this evening, it would not boot up.  I got a message to press the esc button, but when I did that nothing happened.  This happened once before last year, and I was told that the f12 light was red so it was locked up.  How do I unlock the computer so I can use it.  It has Windows 10 Pro installed on it, and works fine normally.  Could someone tell me what the procedure is to get the laptop to boot up now?  Thankyou!!!

good day all,

for christmas yesterday i recieved a replacement laptop as a gift it is a compaq presario cq56 and it works great my only problem is that my media player key on my left side of my keyboard runs cyberdvd player, i removed this and installed vlc as i prefer that for my media viewing and now i am unable to run my media player through the keyboard shortcuts.

i have set file associations inside vlc
i have tried to set vlc as my default program using the default programs and features menu but couldnt find vlc player only options were current, windows media centre and windows media player, selecting either of the windows options and clicking on ok resulted in the option being reset to my current one
i cant seem to find a program installed on the machine that allows me to customize my keyboard shortcuts but the laptop was preowned but reconditioned, i have searched for a program but i can not find one for my opearating system (windows 7 home preimum)
there isnt a option to configure the shortcuts in the keyboard section of control panel
and as a last resort i tried to change the fill association that is in the registry location relating to the appkey (the value is 16 and the default file association was .CDA i changed this to .mp3 hoping that that would allow me to load vlc player as default but it didnt work)
i attempted to set the vlc media player shortcut on the desktop to the media key but it wouldnt allow it, windows refused to change the box from non... Read more

How do I wipe & reboot my notebook. Just got back from ex friend & want to upgrade & use for myself ??

A:Compaq presario CQ56 115DX NOTEBOOK

If you are lucky the original recovery partition is still intact see the tutorial here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01867418 If the HP recovery does not work you would have to get your hands on a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM disk or a copy of the HP restore disk set for your computer. HP no longer offers it but you can perhaps get it from 3rd party vendors. www.computersurgeons.com www.restoredisks.com What upgrades had you thought about doing?

Hopefully I posted in the right section. But anyways I will be as detailed as possible. Currently I have a Compaq Presario CQ56 115dx running Wins7 out of factory. One day I was using my computer perfectly fine, everything normal and running great. I decide to close the lid to put it to sleep.

I come back later to find that it didn't actually sleep and was just stuck there. This has happened before and I would just turn off the computer and it would be fine. But recently I did and it is now stuck at bootup. The caps locks blinks 1 time, which corresponds to CPU not functioning I believe. I reseated harddrive and ram, didn't do much.

Then randomly as I am trying to get it to boot by turning it on and off, waited a few and it booted up normally. Perfect. Then I decided to shut it down instead of putting it to sleep just to find later when trying to get on, its back to the problem.

Any help would be appreciated on how to prevent this without any major repair work.

As the title states, I have a cq56-219wm. The LED code leads me to believe that the cpu has died. However, I have already replaced it with a new one and still am getting the same code with no boot up. I have tried the power reset by holding the power button for one minute and still nothing. The fans are functional as well. My question is, what would the next step be for this laptop repair and will it be worth it on a 2 year old machine? Thanks in advance.

A:Compaq Presario CQ56-219WM No Boot

Unless you can find something not connected back correctly (few will repair a laptop's hardware due to fragility) then I'd RMA the CPU to try another one. If the LED blinking code is consistent they should take it as proof it is not working and replace it.

Most new hardware has a year's tech support so you might even get them to help you go over it in advance of an RMA, which is the best way to set one up anyway.

Hello Hard Disk 1 Full (305) Hi, The 305 error would indicate that your Hard Drive is failing and will need to be replaced. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced and get a set of recovery disk from HP , this would resolve the issue, its not the hacker, its the hdd that is failing because of which you got black screen #hpexpertday

I have a Compaq Presario CQ56-115DX Notebook PC and lately I have been having problems with the computer. When I turn it on the screen is blank, and it seems like it doesn't log into Windows (because when it goes into Windows it usually makes the welcome noise) the Capslock light flashes, the CD drive works, the wireless light is red, on the left side in one of the USB ports it has a small light that flickers a bit and then stops after I turn on the computer. The laptop battery works, the AC adapter works (the light where the adapter connects to turns on when I connect it), I tried doing the thing where you take out the battery and disconnect the adapter and turn on the So everything works except the screen is blank, I connected another monitor to see if it's the GPU that's bad or my laptop's monitor, but my other computer's monitor doesn't detect anything which leads me to believe it's not my laptop's screen but something else. Here's the other thing though sometimes when I turn on the laptop the screen does show up and everything goes in like normal (the orange screen with the COMPAQ logo comes up, the Windows logo, etc...) but when I turn it off and then try to turn it back again the screen is blank, and I turn it off and on again several times until the computer decides to work normally. I have a Compaq Presario CQ56-101SG which does not start anymore.I updated the BIOS from Version F.00 to F.18 which forces the device to reboot which went well. But after a shutdown the notebook does not start, it hangs with a blank screen, power LED and WiFi LED lit up and Caps Lock LED is blinking about 1x/sec. What I tried to recover:* Remove battery and AC adapter, press power button for about a minute and try to power up again with AC connect. --> Same bad state as before.* Press power button for 5 sec while no power connected (battery removed), reconnect AC, press [Win]+[B] while power button starts the system. --> Same bad state as before.* The same as before but this time with a 2GB USB thumb drive (FAT16 formatted, "HP_TOOLS" named, put "01604F06.BIN" - an older BIOS version binary - into root directory) connected to USB port. --> Same bad state as before. - Did I anything wrong when trying to recover the BIOS?- May the name of the BIOS file needs to be something else?- Is there anything else I can try to get the device up and running again? Kind regardsChristian

Hi Guys. I'm new to this so, sorry if i post it wrong?

Well, Last night, my laptop totally froze. No mouse movement. Screen froze. Everything. The only way to get round this was to disconnect any power to the laptop and remove the battery. That solved my 1st Problem. However, once i tried to reboot the system, All i got was a black screen with flashing Caps lock light OR in some cases it begins to start up however, at the ''Starting Windows screen'' It goes black and stays black.

Erm, i really love my laptop so if anyone has any suggestions to fix this.. or if i've posted it in the wrong section i apologize i just need a fix :(

Hi all,
I have a Compaq Presario CQ56 64-Bit (Windows 7 Home Premium) laptop that I bought before the summer, today a Windows Update has given me an Acer display update published on the 28/12/2011. I thought because I had my vga cable plugged into the TV Windows Update may have become confused but despite checking for updates again it still appears there as optional.

AMD/ATI is recognized by Windows and Windows Update and there had already been a display driver update not so long ago, so I cannnot understand why I'm receiving an update for the wrong machine?

A:Acer - Display - ACER S271HL update on Compaq Presario CQ56 64-Bit

Not actually for AMD/ATI almost monthly you can see a newer update become available and that's why you will see one listed as an optional hardware update for the integrated graphic chips on the laptop.

Since Windows detects the tv you are using as an external monitor that also becomes a detected hardware. If that happens to be an Acer brand tv that would explain why that particular update came about.

Got a problem with a compaq presario CQ56, in that whenever I log on to my main profile, it will start normally, and the desktop and icons will appear for a second, after which all the icons disappear and a few seconds later, so does the background, leaving me with a blank white screen. All the programs seem to work fine though, just "underneath" the white screen, as when I ctrl+alt+del, it returns to how it should be untilI perform an action

So far I've tried restarts, full shutdowns, emergency shutdowns(battery removal), switching users back and forth just about everything from taking it apart, which I don't think needs to be done

Any and all help would be appreciated

If you can, try hooking the laptop to a computer monitor (should have a video input jack on the side somewhere) and booting the computer, then hitting FN until you get a picture on the monitor.

.: Hello. Recently my parents bought a new Compaq CQ56 laptop with Windows 7 installed. They brought it with them on a trip to my home city this Christmas. They also installed Norton 360.

I have worked with the computer for two days. It runs IE8, but no other browsers. I can install FF, but it returns error pages, unable to connect. I tried installing Opera, Safari and Chrome, but cannot: the installations themselves fail.

Even if I connect with an ethernet cable, none of these will install, and FF will not run.

I've added Firefox to the Norton 360 firewall settings. It made no difference.

I have never seen anything like this happen on any laptop before. It is beyond frustrating. How can a laptop run one browser and not any other?

I have no idea if this is a Windows 7 issue or a Norton issue. I've added Firefox to the Norton firewall, but it made no difference. I do not understand why the Compaq allows IE8 to connect to the Internet, but not one other program. Even the Norton 360 LiveUpdate cannot connect. I've tried this using the Compaq wirelessly, or with ethernet cable.

Has anyone else every experienced this? If anyone has any insight into why this is happening, I'd be very grateful for advice, guidance, solutions!

Hello,

I know this is a long shot. I'm staying in what's basically a hotel for the next couple months. I was on their free wireless networks up until a couple of days ago, when it just cut off my internet access all of a sudden.

They have confirmed it's nothing on their end. My roommates have had steady access on their computers no problem, my iPhone as well.

I obviously have no access to their modem, to make issues more difficult, when I right-click any of the network connections, a dialog box will appear, but all the menu options are blank. I can't do anything to the connections except rename them. Anything else yields a message box with no message.

if there's any other way to access the TCP/IP properties that would be great. Right-clicking the connection and clicking properties is the only way I know of.

I have tried winsock repair, uninstalling/reinstalling wireless driver, and just about everything else I could think of.

ipconfig /all gives me the following output:

Appears you are on Vista ( Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001] )

and running from an Admin Login (ie Owner and other than maintenance, you should be using a Limited Account, eg: UAC but solve that latter)

Disconnect from the router
Goto Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections.
Right click on ?Local Area Connection? & click ?properties? option.

scroll and find the Internet Protocol V6
clear the [x] preceeding that line
click ok

Hey guys, I've been going though quite a few of your threads seeing if solutions given to people with similar problems would work, but i haven't had any luck, so I decided my own thread would be the best choice....especially since I'm just seeing the same ideas over and over.

So here's my situation. I recently moved in with someone else who already had a PC. Since my bedroom didn't have cable on it, my PC was off the internet for about 2 months (mostly waiting for the cable company to come and install the cable in there). Well, finally the cable guys come and they set up the connection. The modem says it's connected, the computer itself says it's connected, but no program (Firefox, IE, various auto-updaters) can access the internet. The cable guys suggested that it could be my Avast! anti-virus (the default McAfee was removed long ago). So I uninstalled that with no result. I then began looking for similar problems on here and other forums. I can ping my IP fine, and I can ping my gateway fine, but I can't ping any external IP (with host name or IP address). Windows firewall was turned off, and I even made a specific exception for IE on the firewall....this did nothing. I tried fixing the winsock entry to no avail (oh yeah, I was running XP with Serv Pack 3, so I tried the auto-fix for this and the manual way). So I became desperate and thinking it was a corrupted program/registry key/whatever, I completely re-formatted my computer thi... Read more

Can you see the Local network?.

Do you get an ip address from the Router?.
Open command prompt, (click start, Type cmd in the search box and press enter)

I've set up a wired/wireless network in my apt and after several days of operating without difficulty, the laptop (which is connected wirelessly) now can no longer access webpages. My desktop is wired into the router and has not had any difficulties. I'm using an AirLink 101 802.11g router and a Motorola SB5100 Surfboard modem. The laptop is logged in to the network and I've tried power cycling both the modem and the router and disabled the security on the network. Are there any other basic troubleshooting things I can or should I just get some professional help?

What OS are you using?
Is the laptop static or dynamic address?

Hey there,

I'm running windows 7 64 bit and I'm having a strange internet issue. This has happened to me before and I've only been able to solve by doing a system restore but I figure there has got to be a much better way to solve this problem.
In the bottom right hand corner beside the clock there is a little icon that resembles a little monitor (I'm no brilliant tech person so a lot of this is going to sound stupid probably) right now it shows a little yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it. When I hover over it with my mouse it says Network Connected and then No Internet Access. This is where it gets strange. I am able to connect to pretty much any website when I open my browser.
Now I like to play online games and I recently got BF3. And as some of you may know you need to go through "Origin" in order to play it. Well when I connect to the Origin "library" it tells me I'm offline and basically tells me I won't be able to play multiplayer. But as I said earlier I am able to access the internet for the most part. This issue has been happening well before I got BF3 too.
So I've done everything I can possibly think of. I've emptied my cache, cookies, etc. I have also done the "IPCONFIG/ ALL" thing. Rebooted the modem and the computer. done any system updates. I have also turned my firewall off briefly and tried that. It only seems to work when I do a System Restore and I really don't want to be doing that every time I ha... Read more

Welcome to Seven Forums Terryl!

There are no stupid questions here! I'm wondering if you might be having a problem with your driver.

If you open the start menu by clicking the button and type "device manager" without the quotation marks then press enter, the Device Manager window should open and a list of object categories should be displayed in a list. Look through the list to be sure none have red X's or Yellow Triangles over their icon. It would likely be under the heading Network Adapters. Please include in your reply anything marked with one of these symbols.

Do you have a Petty good idea of when it started occurring (the most recent time, NOT before the restore point you used)?

You also say that :

Quote:
I am able to connect to pretty much any website when I open my browser.

Can you clarify the Pretty much part? Does it seem to be working like normal or is there a definite change where it intermittently does not connect "More Than Usual?"

Thanks,

Hello and Welcome to Seven Forums,

Have you tried unplugging the network cable from the router's ethernet port then move it to another one?

Can you post an ipconfig /all output for review?

Also, try running the Network Troubleshooter tool from your Windows 7 computer.

Hi, about a week ago I started getting the problem where my laptop would connect to the network but there would be no internet access. I tried many of the suggestions that I found online, like flushing the dns and resetting the tcp/ip but none of them seemed to work. The only thing that I have been able to get to work is doing a system restore to the day before it began to happen. However, the next day when i swich on my laptop again I have the same problem so I have to restore again. Obviously doing a system restore everytime i want to use my laptop isn't ideal.

I can't figure out what is doing this. At first I thought it was a windows update but I disabled all updates after one of my restores and it did not make any difference. I also have mcafee installed and disabled anything within that that I thought could have been an issue. As far as I can see I have not changed or installed anything after the system restores that would cause this problem to arise each time I start up my laptop.

Any help is very much appreciated.

edit - Just thought I should point out that the wireless router I am trying to connect to works fine with everything else, so it is definitely an issue with this laptop.

A:Connected to network, but no internet access

Welcome to the Seven Forums!

Just as a test, please consider uninstalling mcafee and installing Microsoft Security Essentials in its place. Even if this does not fix the issue, maybe you could leave it in place for the duration of the troubleshooting. After you solve this connectivity problem, you can go back to mcafee if you must.

You mentioned that the problem happens again the next day:

1) Does it happen if you just reboot or does it have to be off over night?

2) Does it happen if you turn off the laptop, leave it off for 5 minutes and then turn it back on?

3) And what happens if you set the laptop to stay awake and left it on all weekend?

I might be away from the forums for a day or two - hopefully, another member will jump in.

I just moved in to a new house that already had their wireless network set up. I am on a laptop running Vista. When I try to connect, it says " Connecting to the network is taking longer than usual" It finally will connect however it says "You are connected to <network name> but cannot access the internet." I tried to repair and run the diagnostic tests but nothing is working. Any ideas?

A:You are connected to <network name> but cannot access the internet.

Changes that may help to increase the compatibility of Vista with older networking devices:

Disable the IP Helper service:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties
3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply"
4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session
5. Click OK to exit the dialog

Disable IPv6:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties"
3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
4. Click OK to exit the dialog

NOTE: You should do this for each network connection.

Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:

Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233

Hold the Windows key and type R, enter regedit and press Enter.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}
In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey to be updated.
If the key DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag does not exist, use the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then press EN... Read more

Hi,

I have just bought a new HP Pavilion PC for my parents and have been trying to get it networked. The situation is that they have offices at opposite ends of the house, with the broadband in one office.

I installed a Belkin Universal Repeater (pain the neck to setup) in between the offices to extend the wireless range to the second office. The network signal in the second office strong (five bars) and I have no problems connecting with my laptop (running Vista).

However, the new PC, which has a wirelesss card in, can get on the network (consistently, and the connection is never dropped), BUT the internet access is intermittent at best (works maybe five minutes out of every 30). I cannot access the router admin page when the internet connection is lost, but I can still see all the other devices on the network.

I have tried disabling IPv6, as per a number of forum suggestions, but this didn't help.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
Update: Ok, so now for some reason I have full internet access (nothing has been changed), BUT I can no longer see any network devices! I can access the router admin page from where I can see that for somre reason the router thinks the Belkin repeater (i.e. the repeater's mac address) is my new PC - the IP address for the PC is 192.168.1.67. The IP address for the repeater is 192.168.1.100, yet in the router admin page it says that the PC is offline and the router (going by its mac address) is online, but has the PCs IP address (192... Welcome to seven Forums!

Is there a PC connected to the repeater's ethernet port or is it stand alone? I looked at the manual a spotted a few items you might want to look at.

First take a look at IP addressing. Are all PC's using DHCP from the router? Did you at any time get a "duplicate IP" warning on any of them?

The mac address showing up weird is not all that unusual if something has connected to the repeaters' ethernet port. It could take on the MAC address of the attached device. It varies by manufacturer so it may be normal for that particular device.

The other items to look at are "Protected Mode", "Repeater Mode" and "54g-LRS".

How are these configured?

Hi! I have a wireless router with three wireless computers on it. Additionally, I have two wired computers. I can't get my Compaq w/Vista to access the web using IE8 or Firefox. However, my AV (Norton) can run live update easily. I have great internet connectivity, but can show pages. With IE, I get the "can't display this page" or something similar. I click to diagnose the connection and it says that it's fine. I did the following so far:
1. disconnected the modem and router and reconnected.
2. ensured that the firewall was allowing the programs through (and turned it off for awhile).
3. Checked the network adapter to ensure that it was automatically assigning DNS and the other box.
4. I downloaded the setups for IE8 and firefox and reinstalled them.
5. went to LAN properties for the connection and it's active.

Help?
Thanks!

Hi Thoran35, welcome to sevenforums. Can you connect to your routers setup page? Normally the address is something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1..something like that. It should be available in the manufacturers manual.

Hello!

I've been trying to troubleshoot this on my own for a day or two but to no avail. My laptop (with Intel wireless N-2200 network card) has been failing to connect to the internet on a home network starting randomly 2 days ago. I've looked through several forums and have tried most of the suggested solutions to no avail. My mobile devices (iPad and android phone) are able to connect fine, just not the laptop; in addition, my laptop has no trouble connecting any other network.

Solutions attempted:
TCP/IP Reset (netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt) along with winsock reset on elevated CMD
Disabling IPv6
Triple-checking that both IPv4 and 6 are set to automatically retrieve IP/DNS
Triple-checking that DCHP client service is active
Disabling all Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapters
System Restore to 2 days ago
Manually setting DNS server to 8.8.8.8
Turning off/on router for 5 minutes
Disabling firewall
Security Essentials scan
Uninstall/reinstalling the network card driver
Not the McAfee fix, as I never installed it on my computer
Flush+register DNS, then ipconfig /release+ /renew on elevated CMD, which is stuck at /release with "An error occurred while releasing interface Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1 : The system cannot find the file specified." error.

I am really stuck, and out of ideas! Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!
