My windows explorer has stopped showing folders.

Q: My windows explorer has stopped showing folders.

My explorer has stopped showing folders. Here is a snapshot of c:\.
I have recently installed ultimate windows customizer and due to some error this problem has occurred.
The first picture shows that c:\ has the windows 7 OS files. The second image shows that the folder is shown empty. Please help!!!

Preferred Solution: My windows explorer has stopped showing folders.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have you tried uninstalling ultimate windows customizer or doing a system restore back to the time before you installed it?

Whenever I put in a usb drive - whether it's a pen drive or a hard drive on a usb adapter, Windows Explorer lists it as "local drive" or "removable drive". It didn't use to be this way. In the Win Explorer Properties dialog, the label text box is blank. Renaming the drive there is not reflected in the Explorer interface, but it is when I call up a CMD window and execute "VOL G:".

When I attempt to view a specific folder's contents in Windows Explorer, it appears to be stuck in a loop and does not show the contents. The scroll-bar on the right flashes non-stop. This only started today.

If I rename the folder, the problem goes away and I can view the folder content.

If I then rename the folder back to what it was before, the problem returns.

This issue also occurs with the same specific folder, if I boot into Safe-Mode (which would seem to rule out it being a 3rd-party software conflict issue).

If I login using a different user account the problem does not occur (so it seems to be an issue
with the user account).

The problem does not occur if I map a drive from a second computer and view the folder contents.

The problem doesn't occur when I use the Save As function to save another file to that specific folder.

I have performed an extended memory check, along with running "chkdsk /R" with no change in behavior.

Any helpful tips on getting to the bottom of this would be much appreciated. I did find a reference to someone else having the same issues in a different forum (from Dec 2011); however, no help was forthcoming.

A:Windows Explorer stopped showing folder contents

I used the following procedure which cleared up the folder content display loop preventing Windows Explorer from showing the folder contents:In the Tree Pane of Windows Explorer, I highlighted the problem folder
Activated the Menu Bar via Organize | Layout
On the menu bar I used View | Customize this folder...Selected General Items for the Optimize this folder for option

I applied the change and the folder contents once again became viewable (no slider bar flashing).
Changing the Optimize option back to Pictures still allowed the folder contents to be viewed.

I was testing my FTP server tonight and when I connect to the home directory there's two folders that show up (RECYCLER and System Volume Information) in the home directory that shouldn't be there. When I go into my home directory in Windows Explorer these folders don't show up there, even if I choose to show the hidden files. If I can't get these folders to show up in Windows Explorer I can't exclude them from showing up in my FTP Server software. Is it possible that they show up in my FTP client because I'm connecting to the same machine the server is on? That's all I can come up with. What's going on here and how do I fix it?

Dear all,

One of my Win7 PC's STOPPED showing my NAS and the shares on it in Windows Explorer. One of the shares (Pictures) was mapped as network drive P:: That also stopped worken.
It worked flawless for > 1,5 year and it stopped. As far as I remember, I did nothing that could make this happen (...as far as I remember...!). Last months I tried everything I found on the internet that possibly could solve this, but no success.

I'll try to picture the situation as clear as I can:

I have 2 Win7 PC's: a Desktop - having the problem -, with WIN7 Home Premium (EN) and a Laptop (WIN7 Home Premium NL, Dutch), not having the problem and showing the NAS and its share fine. Both are wired to the same switch. My wife is using an XP-machine - still, but I'm changing it to Lubuntu now - also showing the NAS and its shares properly in the windows explorer.

Screenshot from the Laptop, showing the NAS properly: WIN7-NL_Nas-shown.png

Screenshot from the problem machine, the Desktop, NOT showing the NAS and its shares properly: WIN7-EN_NAS_not_shown.png

When trying to access other devices, like the Laptop, from Windows Explorer, I get this error message, the same as when I try to map a network drive to a NAS-share: WIN7-EN_no-access-to-share.png

In contradiction to this (?), my file backup tool on this desktop (Cobian Backup) easily accesses the NAS and creates backup-folders on it and indeed backs up the selected files:

Have you tried leaving then rejoining the Homegroup from the problem machine?

Have you tried changing the Workgroup name, rebooting then changing the Workgroup name back to what ever it was?

Have you run a system file integrity scan using the sfc /scannow command?

Having a system image handy from before the problem occurred would be an easy fix at this point.....

Hey there! (Noob to the forums, wasn't sure where to post to begin with. Sorry if it's the wrong subject thread!)

Basically... when I go to "Choose file" anywhere online, whether it be a file or uploading a picture; my folders and C: disk.. pretty much everything on the left side of the Windows Explorer doesn't show up.

I ran a virus scan not just three days ago? Nothing showed up. Re-running another one... and nothing has yet to show up.

The problem is in the purple rectangle in the attachment. (Did the same exact thing when I was uploading this picture).

I'm having a very bizarre issue on a laptop running Windows 7. Windows explorer is showing all items as the wrong size, it's as if the math is off by a few 0s. For example an outlook file is showing up a 548 GB which clearly isn't possible. I looked up the
file on another computer and it was actually 5.48 GB. Every file on the computer shows up that way. It also doesn't matter if I'm looking at a file on the local drive or on a mapped drive, it still shows the incorrect value. I've never run into something like
this before and haven't had much luck finding anything on Google either. Has anyone seen something like this before or have an idea for how to change the math behind explorer? If that is even what needs to be changed.

As an extra note, kind of funny but even the transfer rate is buggered up, the laptop is transferring files from a mapped drive at a miraculous 522 MB/s, sure do wish my computer could move that fast.

system is an HP elite 1010 desktop Windows 7 64 bit

windows explorer crashes randomly opening picture folders with any icon view (small to xlarge)
crash is always stackhash
this also causes Office (Outlook, Word) to crash when trying to insert pictures

it started just about at purchase, as soon as files were moved from an xp system

have tried everything i have read about
- checked DEP settings
- sfc /scannow showed no issues
- all windows updates done
- shellexview - disabled everything non MS in the context menu
- clean boot with all non ms services off
- moved all the picture folders to another W764 system where the problem does not happen, so assuming it is not a corrupt file
- broke folders up to smaller ones, and different ones cause the crash, so can't point to an indvidual file

it 'seems' to be related to the speed of clicking the mouse in the folder once it opens... extreme patience makes it happen much less often, but still happens sometimes

just ordered repair DVD from HP, but not sure what to do...
is there a 'repair' that will not wipe up installed programs, user definitions, etc that is worth trying?

any other thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
thank-you for BleepingComputer!

I have a few subfolders in the favorites folder, and although I can see the subfolder in explorer, it doesn't show up in the folder tree on the left. Even if I go to the subfolder (doubleclicking in the main view), it still doesn't show up in the tree on the left.

Is it because it's a special kind of folder, and has everyone the same behaviour, or is something wrong at my end?

Here is my process. I scan documents onto my pc and save them to a file on my network drive. Then, I need to email these pdfs to other employees. I used to open Outlook, create a new email then click on "attach file". I would then get a drop down menu of the recent files I've worked with. There were some files on this recent list that I wanted to remove. I couldn't figure out how to remove only the select one or two files, so I cleared the history. Now, the files I view are not being saved to this drop down menu. I have to climb through 4 levels of files to get to the one document I need. How can I get File Explorer (not Windows Explorer) to start saving my recent activity again?

Ok, this question has been asked around many corners of the Internet and these forums and I haven't found a "real" answer so I'm asking it again and hopefully seeking a final resolution to the problem.

When "Protected Mode" is turned On, users are unable to view some folders in the file upload dialog that they can normally view (e.g. under Documents, Pictures, etc.).When viewing the same folders in Explorer running as the same user as the Internet Explorer instance, the missing folders are viewable.Launching Internet Explorer "as an administrator" allows the user to view the missing folders (but this is not recommended due to security concerns).
So far, the workaround that I found was to either run some crazy tool from BleepingComputer called Unhide that resets everything on your system -- this is the sledge hammer-to-thumbtack approach.  Another one was to go into Organize > Folder and
search options > View and uncheck the hide options and select the show radio option.  The last one was to search for the folder in the file upload dialog, right-click the folder, and uncheck Hidden.
None of these, IMHO, are valid solutions to the real problem which is that something is special about this folder that is causing IE in Protected Mode to treat the file as Hidden.
The last "workaround" seems to indicate that the "hidden" file attribute is set for the file, but this doesn't app... Read more

I have just built a new computer, using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, however, I've noticed when I open Windows explorer, 3 out of 4 times it will continuously search for drives when opening up explorer and not show any drives that are installed. I've tried reformatting, using different hard drives, but the problem persists no matter what I do. I've reinstalled Windows 7 with only a single drive plugged in, tried different SATA ports, but this problem keeps coming back. The only thing I can think of is that the Windows 7 install disk is corrupted and not installing properly.

I've also noticed that once it starts searching like this, the icons wont display in any folder, although the file names will. Likewise, when trying to sort files by date, type, etc, they will not sort.

When this happens, I can easily type in C:\ to get to the drive without problem to access the drive but above problems with icons not showing, sorting, etc still is a problem.

Has anyone had this problem? Know of a way to fix this? I'm not looking forward to having to reformat again as I don't have the time to sit through and reinstall everything again after.

Posted this back on 11-28 in the audio/video forum and did not get situation fixed. Was recommended to post here for help

The computer: Gateway desktop - vista home premium - WMP 11
Over the past couple days my computer stopped playing any videos in windows media player. It's always played any/all types of video files (wmv, mpg, etc..) just fine up until a couple days ago when the video stopped showing. The audio plays just fine, just no video. It doesn't matter what the video format is, and the files also play OK in winamp and/or nero showtime.
I've updated to the most recent k-lite codec packs and that didn't help. I've tried to download and re-install WMP 11 but MS recognizes that I already have the most recent player.
I've tried going into Tools -> Options, Performance tab and changing the video
acceleration down to see if that helped, but no such luck. I've also tried 2 different restore points that did not help.

Is there some way of running a repair to it? I dug around some but haven't found anything anywhere on my machine that allows me to do anything to wmp.
Also, I'm holding off upgrading to windows 7 on this machine until this issue is resolved, but do ya suppose it may get fixed during the upgrade if I went ahead with it?

Doesn't seem to be possible to uninstall WMP 11 in Vista.

Do you have a restore point to roll back to.

You could try posting in the Windows Vista forum.

If you look in the Windows 7 forum, the general consensus seems to be that a complete install of Windows 7
is preferable to any kind of 'upgrade'.

I have Windows 7 SP1 and I have Windows Explorer that crashes every time I log in to an account. I don't have any additional program that starts at system startup.

1) When I sign in to an account, I have to wait a long time before the desktop appears.

2) When the desktop is displayed, the applications bar appears to be locked for a few minutes. In fact, the icons on the system tray appear very slowly and if I click on Start, the Start menu will be displayed when the applications bar is unlocked.

3) Sometimes, the "Windows Explorer has stopped working" window is displayed.

Using the sfc /scannow command, I verified that the system is integral.
In Safe Mode I have no problems.
Now, what can I do to solve the problem?

Have done a reinstall of Win 7 onto my SSD C drive. Decided to continue cleaning my PC by doing a disk clean with Diskpart command on my D drive - carefully following the steps in Brink's Disk - Clean and Clean All With Diskpart Command tutorial. The procedure failed, with the error message: "Clean is not allowed on the disk containing the current boot, systems pagefile, crashdump or hibernation volume"

This is odd, since status in the Computer Management/Disk Management window shows it as "Healthy(Primary Partition)" without mention of boot, pageflie, crash dump or hibernation vol. Those are shown for the C Drive. (I will add that I was very conscientious in identifying the correct drive for the Clean)

I exited the elevated command prompt, subsequently checked my computer explorer and found my D drive is no longer listed.

The disk is still listed as #0 in Computer Management/Disk Management window with two partitions: System Reserved (100 MB NTFS Healthy {System, Active, Primary Partition}) and Volume (930 GB NTFS Healthy {Primary Partition})

The disk also shows up in device manager under Disk Dives as working properly.

How do I now restore my D drive?

A:HDD Not Showing in Windows Explorer

The mistake you seem to have done is reinstalling Windows 7 on the SSD with the other drive also connected.

Just disconnect the other drive and try to boot your system. If it does not boot, then definitely the boot files are on the other drive.

Simplest solution I would perform is to reinstall Windows 7 on the SSD after disconnecting the other drive.

Confirm you are able to boot into the system and then groom your Windows 7 on it.

Afterwards you can connect the other drive and format it the way you like.

Hi, running Windows 7 x64 SP1 notebook and have recently been getting 'Windows Explorer explorer.exe has stopped working' message more and more frequently, usually every few days now. The notebook hangs when the message comes up, screen blanks then explorer.exe restarts and I can continue working.
I'm wondering if this is a hardware/driver/software issue or something more nefarious. I've scanned with Avast, Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro with nothing found and I also followed a guide to check and remove registry entries from potentially corrupted shellex menus. I only removed one pertaining to 7-Zip and that was today so I probably won't know right away if this has any affect on the Windows Explorer crashing problem.
Any assistance is appreciated, thanks!

it is my hope that someone with experience editing the registry will read this thread and offer some feedback.

I am trying to get embedded album art to show in W.Explorer for m4a Mpeg4 files. I am not talking about the art on the folder but the art in the files itself. Mp3 shows up no problem but m4a is being difficult.

I have browsed many threads on this issue and have not found an easy solution aside from using a shell extension.

The only possible solution I found in another thread and will post it here:

"I fixed the problem as it was mainly due to corrupted registry for some strange reason.i imported the .mp3 dile extension key from registry and opened it using notepad and replaced all .mp3 extension with .m4a and saved it as .m4a.reg and run it and had to do a system restart after that thumbnails again started showing up in windows explorer as normal.such as in the below screenshot"

My questions

I don't have a corrupted registry as I just did a fresh install only a week ago. so.
is it possible for me to edit the registery as this person suggests? how would I go about doing so exactly? I have no experience messing with registry files so if someone could offer some guidance it would be a real help.

A:Album art is not showing up in Windows Explorer Help! plz

Hi icehammer, welcome to Eightforums!

As far as I understand your question, you want to be able to see the artwork of your m4a music files when browsing with Windows Explorer.

I myself have most of my music in m4a format and I can see all the albumart in Windows Explorer.

The ONLY thing I did was installing K-Lite Codec Pack. I don't use other codec packs, K-Lite worked for me.

Here is the downloadlink ==> Download K-Lite Codec Pack

Just remember, if you run a x64 Windows you MUST install the x64 codecpack AFTER you install the NORMAL codecpack. If you have other codec packs installed please uninstall them first!

Goodluck trying and hopefully enjoying the albumart in Windows Explorer

When I open Windows Explorer I and go to my Picture File, the Thumbnails don't always show correctly. I can open Windows Explore and see no Thumbnails displayed but if I open another copy, it's better but not all come up. I have multiple folders, some display no thumbnails (a blank white sheet), others show a few and others show more. I also get a green bar at the top that never finishes. Sometimes, I open Explorer, and if I try to expand the Folder Tree on the left panel it won't expand, The Files are on an External Flash Drive. I've tried many troubleshooting searches for the problem so yes, I have the Folder Option, "View" set to "Display thumbnails." This is a recent problem. One last thing, the computer seems as it's freezing and not updating the thumbnails, but currently the CPU usage is only 4% under Task Manager.

I am using a 12+ year old Compaq pentium running XP.
1. Lately getting blue screens.
2. Heard that XP is no longer supported.

Since I was happy with the Compaq I bought a Envy from HP. It had Windows 8 installed.
Hey, I'm naive I thought that 7 must not have been very good and 8 was an upgrade.
I installed classic shell and was having hopes that I could get around in 8.
Then I saw that 8.1 was out and was an improvement. I figured that I might as well try the latest.
That seemed to take away some of the things that Classic shell had provided as well as my local account.
I found someone to take out that stuff and put in Windows 7 Pro.

Now the problem.
I copied Windows 8.1 (at least some of it) to a plug-in disk. I copied XP to another plug-in disk.
I used command prompt to make a directory named XP and another called W8. Still in command prompt, and using Xcopy /s /e I copied the disks into the Windows 7 machine. A:2 Drives Showing Up In Windows Explorer And Only One There

Hi pbman41

to BleepingComputer.

On my Pavilion, the D: drive is the Recovery partition on the main C: drive. This is the area which will restore your computer back to factory condition if everything goes wrong. GUARD IT WITH YOUR LIFE, and do not add or delete anything from it.

If that is not what it is on your PC, it may be a backup created by some program on your machine.

Hi, I presume you are using windows 7, if so, try this link and see if it helps fix your problem.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
or this one.
Repair Install
Repair Install

I hope one of these works for you.

I don't know if this is a fault or something I have altered but if I go to 'My Pictures' in windows explorer I get a long list of files that are mostly .jpg (there are some bmp's) .

They just show up as files, in fact, I use a picture program called 'irfanview' so they all have that as the picture on the screen.

If I open the preview pane and click on one of them it shows up on the right side of the page just as an irfanview file and doesn't show the picture.

I am sure this used to show the picture in both panes?

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

This is very simple to fix. While in the directory of the troubled files, click "View" in the bar, and select Small Icons, for a smaller thumbnail (preview) of the picture, select Medium for a some-what larger view. I have also attached a picture.
If this does not help please let me know by replying to this thread.

Can anyone out there tell me why when I go to pull up a tech article or some such document that has images as part of the article, the images only show as a box with an "X"? The images tend to support the explanation of the text, but they aren't there. Is there a box within Windows Explorer or something in my Zone Alarm that I have to set in order to get these to show properly?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I have a problem where the left pane of the windows explorer bar is greyed out and it shows nothing. The right pane however works fine.

I have seen the article in relation to how to fix this problem on a Windows 95 and 98 machine but not a Windows 2000 machine as the registry key mentioned does not exist in Win2k.

Any idea anyone ?

Hi. Haven't had any problems in a while. Other than my pc motherboard crapping out. So, now I use a laptop. Compaq Presario C500. Not the greatest but, it does what I need. I noticed this situation: I have to upload photos for my job. When I access the browse button to upload photos (or any other files) folders that don't exist anymore show up. Oddly, they are empty when I click on them, and I know they had files and folders in them before I moved them off to another drive for backup. Any idea why this might be? Thanks in advance for any assistance. Kirk

It seems I can't pin folders to Windows explorer in my taskbar any more. A few weeks ago all the folders that where pinned there disappeared (even the ones that where added automatically) and if I try to add new ones nothing happens. Programs can still be pinned to the taskbar as before.

What could be causing this?

Try creating another user account via Control Panel then User Accounts and see if the issue resides in that new account.

If it does then we can rule out account / profile corruption.

Hi, what do you see if you
a. From the Cortana search box or a Run box execute diskmgmt.msc?
b. Use a partition manager boot disk?

(It might be helpful if you could complete your system specs- thanks)

I have just recently noticed that the bottom of the menu bar is always showing in my explorer windows. I have tried switching themes, rebooting, changing performance settings etc, all to no avail.

When I mouse over the base the cursor changes to the vertical resize and when I click the menu base disappears and shows a shadow.

When I set folder options to always display the menu, everything is fine, but typically I do not want it showing and only pull it up with the ALT key if I need it.

Has anyone else experienced this? Possible things to try?

A:Base of Menu bar showing in Explorer windows

I was going to suggest turning on the old menus, but see you already located that function. given that, not sure what else to suggest. Are you running any other graphical customization software now, or were you before..?

Ok so I installed a program called classic shell, it worked fine, but then I wanted to remove that organize bar in win 7 home premium, So i downloaded and put in a new shellstyle.dll, and after rebooting I can no longer open folders, like they open but they are blank, cannot get into control panel, system restore did nothing to help, Ayy way I can restore this without having to delete everything off my hdd? I been trying google but been having no luck finding a solution at all. I had a backup of my shellstyle.dll but apparently the pc deleted it on its own for some wacked reason.

Here is an image of what I see when I open them.

Hello, people, new Windows 7 user here and I already need some help. I've got three internal hard drives, and they're all formatted and partitioned. But my D:\ (which is physically the same drive as my C:\) won't show up in Windows Explorer. The drive is installed, formatted and has information written on it. I can go to Internet Explorer and type "D:\" in the address bar and it takes me right there, I can see it in Disk Management. It also gets written to as the only thing so far on that drive is Steam (a game downloading program) and it saves all my games with no problem.

But if I wanted to say, save an image to that drive, it doesn't show up in the "Save As" dialog box. So does anyone have any ideas? Formatting the drive isn't really an option as my OS is on it. Thanks for any help!

A:Hard Drive Not Showing In Windows Explorer

Damn, 67 views and nothing? That bites. Anyway, I found I can change the drive letter and it shows up. Which is very weird. It won't recognize a drive designated D:\.
