Help me disable the taskbar button color highlight "feature".

Q: Help me disable the taskbar button color highlight "feature".

I have been looking all over the net and have not found a solution. I know that"feature" that matches the button icon is supposed to help, but this is quiet aggravating. my question is, how do I disable the color feature, meaning when i hover over a taskbar button it matches the icon of the program, how do I stop this?

Preferred Solution: Help me disable the taskbar button color highlight "feature".

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys. I noticed that in Win7, the applications in the new Quick Launch move if you run one of the applications in the "Pinned to Taskbar" section. For example, if I have Windows Explorer and Firefox next to each other and I click to open Windows Explorer, the Firefox icon will slide far to the right so that it's after the Windows Explorer task in the taskbar.

Is there a way to keep the new quicklanuch icons in Win7 in the same place, like WinXP?

When I open some documents then always a warning popup appears in Word 2007:

"Word hyphenation feature is not available. RUn the MS Office Setup program..."

How can I permanently and forever disable this popup (without saving the document and without re-install some other parts of MS Office)?

A:Disable forever ""Word hyphenation feature is not avai"

In Add/Remove programs, select Microsoft Office 2007, then select CHANGE, select Advanced, select and expand Office Shared Features, select and expand Proofing Tools, select and expand English Proofing Tools (if you use English), then click on the little arrow at the side of Hyphenation and choose Run from My computer.
Click Continue.

Setup will then install the missing component. You may need your Office 2007 CD for this.

I would like to change "Windows Explorer" dafault white backgroup color without losing the Aero theme feature in Win7.  I know it can be done in a classic theme by changing the "window" color".  Could someone kindly help
me out?  I searched the Internet and found some sites mentioning downloading programs, which I hesitate to trust due to potentially hidden virus.  I don't mind using regedit to change the registry.  Any hint is much appreciated.

A:How to change "Windows Explorer" dafault white backgroup color without losing the Aero theme feature?

Hi JD,
It seems the Windows Explorer background color cannot be changed in Windows 7. However, you can see if third party software such as
XYPLORER can achieve this.
Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise,
regarding this product's performance or reliability.
Also, you can change other window color by right clicking the desktop ->
Personalize -> Windows Color -> Advanced appearance settings… -> pull down the Item to
Window and choose the color you like -> Click OK.
Hope this helps.

If you have several windows open on the taskbar, and you hover over the taskbar it shows you a "preview" of the windows that are open. Is there a way to disable that "preview" feature?

A:Can the "preview" windows feature on the taskbar be disabled?

I assume you mean the taskbar thumbs.

It requires a registry edit if you are confident enough to mess with registry settings.

Open regedit.exe and navigate to

There should be a d word value in the right hand side named

set its value to 1 to turn off thumbnail previews. Reset to 0 to re-enable thumb nail previews.

A registry (.reg) file to turn off thumbs should look like this

Welcome to the Seven Forums David!

I see the same thing on a W7 Pro laptop - the same button that you have highlighted is disabled.

Try this:
Start > Control Panel
In the upper right corner, change "View by:" to small icons or large icons
Locate and click on "Mouse"

See if you can disable the touch pad from there.

Hi rachelm920, welcome to 7F!

It would help if you told us what email program you work with, what browser, and if you know what file extensions are associated with the attachments you are trying to open..

By default, Microsoft Outlook blocks potentially unsafe attachment files (such as .bat, .exe, .vbs, and .js) that can contain viruses. You cannot see or access the attachments.

You, and your "others" may have to revert to using a network share or Web share that you can access.

Okay, so I recently moved to try and get a more simple look on one of my laptops. I have found that I like using the Soft7 2.0 theme with Token icons. The title says it all, but let me clarify anyway:

1-The problem mostly occurs when running demos you can find at Pouet.net and rarely (but still do happen) in other application/games.

2- After some testing, I'm, fairly sure the problem is due to the GPU memory being used to the max or near the max. So lower resolution, simpler textures and turning off post processing (like MSAA) should help. It should, but it does not always. I suspect Windows 7 to trigger low resources alert much too easily, in fact giving false positive all the time. Like when decompressing large textures and busting the max VRAM cap, even for a faction of a second. If I find my system sluggish, I will take the necessary action, no need for Windows to interrupt me all the time.

3-Yes, I have searched an answer extensively on Google, here, and other forum, for the last hour. Threads from 2009 to 2014.

4- No, none of the provided suggestions worked as NONE of the suggestions precisely addressed the goal of ***eliminating the popup windows completely.***

In conclusion, I'm asking a simple question that can be answered by yes or no: Do you, yes or no, know how to *disable* the Windows 7 message "Do you want to change the color scheme to improve performance"?

If the answer is yes, please give me the detailed procedure and I will be eternally grateful. If the answer is no, sorry to be blunt, but your wild guesses are of no interest to me. Technically, this thread should have 1 reply and... Read more

A:How to disable "Do you want to change the color scheme" message

Don't know if this will be of any help - I have an i7 and a good gfx card, but I have one program that insists on changing the theme. The prog is the screen recording app Camtasia, and it's really annoying to get interrupted 2 mins into a session. My solution was to create a basic theme that I named 'recording' with no aero etc that I switch to before I do any Camtasia stuff.

R-click the desktop and > personalize, then click Windows 7 basic and tweak desktop, colors etc to your liking. R-click this unsaved theme and give it a name. Then when you are doing your 'demos' or whatever, switch to the basic theme first. It's a PITA, but that's what I have to do on my fairly powerful system (o/c i7-2600K, GTX 750Ti 2GB, 8GB RAM).

Hi everyone, I'm liking what I see about Windows 10 so far, but one thing that does bother me is the vibrancy of the colors of the start menu and task bar. I would prefer a more pastel color theme, but so far I haven't been able to find how to do that. I've tried following the second half of this guide (basically, just run "rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,Advanced,@Advanced") to get to the old style "Show color mixer" menu. And that menu does in fact have sliders for "color intensity" or "saturation." The problem is, adjusting those sliders doesn't seem to actually change anything.

So is it possible with Windows 10 to actually change this color option? And if so, I'd appreciate any advice on how to do so. Thanks in advance.

I don't know if I'm using the right term, but I searched and couldn't find anything.

Anyway, I really like the color orange. I want my taskbar to be orange, so I set it to be, but the problem is, when I use Windows Live Messenger, if an IM is incoming, I can barely see the taskbar icon change colors. Is it possible to make the icon turn a DIFFERENT color when a message comes in? Can I make all of the icons turn this new color (possibly silver? white?) when "alerts" come in?

If this is possible, I'd love to know how. I've never edited any aspect of my computer in this way, except for a custom image on the user login screen, so I'm pretty new at this. Looking forward to figuring this out.

According to the tutorial of Microsoft (Turn Windows Defender on or off - Windows Help), if I hope to turn off windows defender in Win7, I need to click Tools -> Options -> Adminstrator -> Uncheck "Use this program."

But I find that, on one of my virtual machines, the button "Tools", as well as "Scan" and "History", are inactive. I mean, I cannot click them. Following is the screenshot.

Spoiler: Screenshot

I do not know why. But I guess this is because there is no antivirus installed. So I hope to know how to turn off defender in such case.

Well, you may think that keep windows defender active will not do much harm when no AV is installed.

Maybe it is correct. But the problem is, when windows defender is not turned off, it will try to update in the run time.

In such case, some processes in the AppData\Temp\ folder will try to execute MPSigStub.exe, which will be located at a RANDOM folder in the root of some partition. Then MPSigStub.exe will try to execute some DLLs in Windows\System32\. These executions are a little boring when I only want to test some anti-exe programs. That is why I hope to disable windows defender.

Thank you.

Hey folks,

maybe it seems a bit silly but I got the following situation:

Is it possible to redirect the windows taskbar "show desktop" button to a certain file or is it possible to change the entry the registry in a way it doesnt minimize rocketdock each time I press the button?

I am on Win7Pro 64bitSP1. Using RocketDock to keep my Desktop cleaner - RocketDock works perfectly except for one thing.
When clicking on Win's Taskbar's "Show Desktop" button next to the clock, it shows me the Desktop but it minimizes RocketDock at the same time, and I a have to force opening it again.
Now i figured out that a .vbs file including:

Set shell = wscript.CreateObject("Shell.Application")

A shortcut to this file can then be placed in RocketDock - which again implies I will use RD(RocketDock) in the way that it keeps hiding and showing up on top of everything, by itself...giving me the possibility to click that shortcut in RD - but I want to get to the Desktop by keeping the windows taskbar button and at the same time not minimizing RD.

Attached a screenshot of the desktop:

Would appreciate some help on this one - thanks in advance everybody!

Exactly how does the "Hide Icons" button work in XP's taskbar? How often is it "refreshed?" I ask this because sometimes you can see all of your system tray icons and sometimes you can't. Every once in a blue moon, I get a blue square without the hide icons button showing and can't get to the button to access the hidden icons because of this. Sometimes this happens if I do something to an icon in the system tray. XP seems to decide when hidden icons will or will not be shown. If the icons are hidden, does this mean that they are REALLY not being used by the system? (i.e not running in the background.) Any comments about this new (and somewhat annoying )addition to XP would be appreciated.

A:Questions About "Hide Icons" Button in XP's Taskbar?

The icons hide after x amount of time. I don't know the default but I think it's about 10mins. I guess to put it in a easier term, the icons that have been inactive (by the user and not the system) for x minutes hides behind the scenes. To show the icons you will need to press the small blue round < button, but if you don't use the icons that were hiding in about 5 secs, then it will go back to hiding.

The system has no part in the activity of the icons.

I apologize in advance if my thread is a duplicate of another thread. My problem is difficult to describe, so I could not find anything through the forum search or Google.

I'll begin by stating what I'm not looking for:
I'm not looking for how to increase the delay or the duration of the taskbar thumbnail previews.
I'm not looking for how to disable taskbar thumbnail previews.
Here is what I am looking for. If you open up two Windows Explorer windows, by default Windows groups them on the taskbar. If you want to switch between the two, you can click the Explorer ("folder") icon, and out will pop up your two Explorer windows, in miniature thumbnails.

What I dislike is that if you hover your mouse over one of the taskbar thumbnails, all other windows fade out except for the one you are hovering over. It is just like Aero Peek, except for taskbar thumbnails. But in my case, even if I don't hover over the thumbnails and click instead, the delay is too short so that I still get that annoying Aero Peek. That is, even if I know which window I want and click on it, I can't click fast enough to prevent everything else from fading out. It's really annoying, because I already know which window I want so there really isn't any point to fade out and then fade back in the same instant.

This happens with any window open on the taskbar. Is there any way to either
turn off Aero Peek for the taskbar thumbnails, or
increase the duration that you have to hover your mouse in order to... Read more

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

The programs that are active highlight these buttons by making it slightly white in one corner, is there any way to change the appearance of the buttons on the Taskbar when it is in use? So the ones that are 'active' have a bright red background or something so they stand out more ? it would be such a help!

Hi. Start menu -> I can only see shut down, or sleep, depending on how it's configured, but to access other power options I have to click on the small white arrow to the right of the power button.

So if the default setting of the big button is shutdown then it's a hassle to choose sleep because I have to click on the oh so small button arrow thing.

There's loads of room at the bottom right of my start menu so please tell me how to have a shutdown button AND a sleep button, because I frequently use both functions and don't want to have to choose only one for quick access. Cheers

A:Start menu -> Shutdown Button - "shut down" and "sleep"

It's that difficult to click the arrow?

There is/are gadget(s) with this functionality.

I have been trying to run Trend Micro House Call on my computer, but I always get the following error message "An error occured while trying to transfer data from the internet! Do you want Trend Micro HouseCall to try resending the required files?" I have two options "OK" and "Cancel". I have tryed "OK" several times, but after a minute the same message appears again. I am using an AVG firewall, could this be somehow affecting it?

Thank-you in advance for your help

When a download is complete, the dialog box opens, announcing "Download Complete" and when I Click the "Open Folder" button the "Download Complete" dialog box closes but the Target Folder doesn’t not open. First noticed this after SP3 in this XP Home environment.

Where’s the “Honor the 'Open Folder' button” setting to get this functionality back?

A:The "Download Complete" "Open Folder" button ignored

While there are a (small) handful of features of Aero that i'd like to use, there are many more that slow down the UI and/or make it distracting that I can't find a way to disable.

(I even tried the "Basic" theme but it has a bug that discards font size settings made under the now-misnamed "color" dialog).

So I end up in Windows Classic, which is being made more difficult to use, including the aforementioned "color" dialog.

I've already been to the "Performance" settings and un-checked every animation available, but even after doing so two things remain:
1) The "glow" around control buttons. To me this is hideous and distracting.
2) Some animations still remain, slowing down the user interface.

To be clear, here's what I might like to use in Aero:
1) taskbar window previews
2) the program switching mechanisms (Flip or ALT+TAB)
3) maybe transparency would look okay, without the animations

Bottom line, Microsoft has bundled both good and bad features in this artificial "feature" called Aero, instead of making the features available individually, and made some of the Aero animations impossible to disable (as far as I know).

A:Disabling more Aero animations and "X" button "glow"

Hello Conan,

You might see if preventing window animations may be able ot help some.

Hope this helps,

I have had the Ad Watch bug and get the "create an association in the Folder Options" error message when trying to open a program. Nothing will open and all exe.and lnk. files are missing from Folder Options. When I try to create new exe. files and new lnk files, the "apply" button is not highlighted so it will not save. I can make other changes and the button is there but it still won't save the exe changes. I am at my wits end. I have been on most forums looking for the answer. Please help.

This just started about a month or so ago...
I'm sure this little pop up came attached to some program I downloaded, but it's not a large enough
program to even show up when you try to use Install/Remove or Revo uninstaller programs.
I would think that most programs will send out software updates or if I open a program they have
update links built into them.
Disabling the popup doesn't keep the program for looking for updates (or does it?), it just doesn't keep
popping up and being an annoyance, right?
Do I "REALLY NEED IT"? If I need it, then so be it, I just don't want it to be a nuisance and keep
popping up.
Thanks ahead of time....

A:How do I "DISABLE" the popup "Common Software Manager"?

Using a registry editor to search for Common Software Manager might give you the folder and file[s] this utility is in [on the harddrive]. Deleting that folder and said file[s] might be enough. Do not use any universal computer fixit utilities for this; such cause more problems than they fix.

Hi everybody and greetings from Belgium:
I was wondering if anyone might know if there is any way to get excel to highlight the cells when it finds information I've asked it to via edit>find.
Because I have such big spreadsheets, with a lot of text, and numbers, I find it really hard to see where the "found" cell is.
Thanks in advance

My dad was recently doing some work on this computer and he REALLY changed the settings in Word around. I was able to get most of them back to how I like it, except one.

When I highlight text and click "delete" to erase it or highlight it and start typing to replace it... it doesn't work. It's like some "text protector" where it doesn't delete it.

How do I fix it back to the original way? (I remember this happening once before).

A:WORD: Highlight text and click "delete" doesn't work!

Come on, someone's gotta know.

A:Possible to disable color hot track feature?
