right click freezes explore.exe and outlook.exe

Q: right click freezes explore.exe and outlook.exe

I am running MS Win XP SP2 on a Dell GX745 Intel Core 2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40 GHz with 2 GB ram.

Starting this afternoon I have had a problem that when I right click on the start button, or on a file in a folder, explorer.exe hangs. I can end process on it, then run explorer.exe and it comes back and works fine. Except for the right clicking. This has also started affecting Outlook as I can not right click on a email and print.

I have tried restoring to a previous point twice, first time yesterday, 2nd time Monday. I have ran IOBit Advanced Windows Care as well as CCcleaner. Spy sweeper did not find anything, and neither did AVG free.

Someone please help as this is driving me bonkers!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: right click freezes explore.exe and outlook.exe

Hi tdawgnok and welcome to TSF !

That could happen if there's a problem with one of the programs that's integrated in the shell (meaning a corresponding action appears in the right-click menu).

Do you remember installing anything new before the problem started ?

Go to start => run and type eventvwr.msc. See if there are errors happening when explorer.exe crashes in the application or system subsections. Double-click the error, click on the third button on the right (this copies the information in the memory) then right-click => paste it here. See if the error messages mention a given driver, dll or .exe file (other that explorer.exe).

Repeatedly press F8 at startup and choose safe mode in the menu that will appear. See if the problem also happens there. If it doesn't happen in safe mode then restart in normal mode. Go to start => run and type msconfig. The program that manages the right-click item that causes explorer to crash should be listed under the startup tab. Use BleepingComputer's startup item database to know what each item does and try unticking the ones related to programs you don't need or installed recently.

You can also use Autoruns by Sysinternals. Go to the explorer tab and look at the items listed under HKLM\...\ContextMenuHandlers

Alternatively you can use Nirsoft's ShellMenuView to manage the right-click context menu :
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shell_menu_view.html
See what programs are associated to the folder or directory file types and deactivate some of them.

If nothing of the above helped then go to start => run and type chkdsk c: /R. You'll be prompted to restart the computer. Wait for the scan to finish (will take some time) and tell us about the results.

My OUtlook is freezing up a lot lately and this is new. Whenever I click on an internet link in the body of an email message - it freezes. If I wait about 3 minutes or more sometimes - it will finally go to explorer and open the link. If I don't wait and decide to just close outlook - I get a "not responding". When I "end program" I get a message from MS that says it is related to WIN Fax Pro.

PLease help this frustrated girl! I don't even know what Winfax Pro is!!

PS - I have Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2 Pentium 4...anything else you need. I can run Hyjack this if it helps...

A:Solved: Outlook freezes up whenever I click on link

You might have to change the registered file type:

1. Open My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the File Types tab.
3. In the Registered File Types list, click URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol, click Advanced, and then click Edit.
4. In the Actions box, type open.
5. In the Application used to perform action box, find to the location of Internet Explorer (Iexplore.exe), and then click Open.
6. In the Application box, type IExplore and then click OK.

That's assuming you're using Internet Explorer as your browser? If not, search for FireFox or whatever browser you prefer.

Let me know if that helps!

Outlook Express was downloading an email when our power blinked. After powering the computer back up, the email is there, but if you click on it the program will freeze up. It's from a source that I'm not concerned about it being a virus. Other emails have come in since then, and the program works like normal, but if I click on this particular email to just simply delete it, the program will freeze everytime. Can't open it, can't delete it - can't do anything with it. I just simply want it to go away now. Any clue?

P.S. I've tried rebooting in safe mode and it does the same thing.

Hello

I wonder if anyone might be able to advise what to do with my PC, apart from smashing it to pieces, which is what it is likely to get very soon.

I am using XP with Service Pack 2 and Outlook, using Word as the e-mail editor. I have Zone Alarm running on the PC.

Everything was working perfectly up until a few days ago, then for no apparent reason, whenever I tried to reply to an e-mail by clicking Reply, it would freeze. It would give me the egg timer, the CPU would start showing 100% in Task Manager and that would be it. Nothing.

If I tried closing Outlook in Task Manager it would take about twenty attempts before closing it, finally giving me a Windows error report.

To add to the confusion, sometimes the Outlook would be fine for a little while and sometimes it would let me reply to one or two e-mails before freezing, as described above. Also, sometimes it would only give me the egg timer for a minute or so, before opening Word to allow me to reply to the e-mail.

Another thing it was doing intermittently was telling me it couldn't find Word, then giving me the option to reply to the e-mail using a basic page, which showed the text I typed in blue.

I checked the settings and Word was shown as the editor, despite Outlook telling me it couldn't find it. This was intermittent, occurring at various times along with the above-mentioned problem in no discernible pattern.

I tried detect and repair, which did absolutely nothing.

Last night I got fed up with i... Read more

A:Outlook Freezes PC When I Click Reply - Egg Timer, 100% CPU & Error Report.

Just to add, I have looked in Task Manager under Processes, and whilst it is doing this freezing nonsense in Outlook, 'WINWORD.EXE' is being shown as taking 98% of the CPU capacity and about 20MB of memory usage.

Could this be the problem?

EDIT: I can shut down the WINWORD.EXE process in Task Manager, which of course brings up an error saying it can't find word, then allowing me to use the standard Outlook editor, but then when I try to send the e-mail it freezes again and then it's the OUTLOOK.EXE process that is taking up 99% of CPU capacity.

Thanks

Mike

I finish off what I am typing, ready to send and whenI do click send outlook freezes and I have to use task manager to force it to close.

I have completely uninstall office and re-installed.
Removed my profile and created a new one.
Created a new data file.

Plus tried all these steps together, as if I was setting outlook and my mailbox up for the first time!

Just moved to win7 - have always used "right click - explore" ever since XP to access Windows Explorer so I can view folders in the left column, and files (and folders) in the right column. Tried to Google this and search this forum and I find postings saying there is no "explore option", that a "double click" on a folder or "my computer" opens the "Windows Explorer".

If that's the new do all "explorer", then can someone tell me how to view folders in the left column and files (and sub-folders) in the right column? And, for example, how would one move a folder to a parent folder without opening another folder window?

A:Where is right click - explore?

Hello Bytemon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The Explorer option has been basically renamed to Open in A new window instead.

Open each Folder in the Same or Own Separate New Window

Here are some more related tutorials about the navigation pane that you might also find helpful for this.

Navigation Pane - Show All Folders

Navigation Pane - Automatically expand to current folder

Hope this helps,

I know the title is confusing so I will do my best to explain...

Back at BETA when I pinned Recycle Bin to the Windows Explorer icon in the Superbar, it would allow me to right click on the recycle bin under windows explorer and choose to empty the recycle bin. Now it only lets me open, view properties, or un-pin it...

Does anyone know a reg fix to give that small (but handy to me) functionality back?

Zidane2424(Chris)

A:Restoring right-click recycle bin empting under explore

Well you can always make a new toolbar and then you can right click on it with out having to go to the explorer icon first, you can also get your options back by holding shift when you right click on the recycle bin.

Thank you in advance for any help you may offer me.

I have win xp pro with 1.5 gig Asus motherboard with 768mb memory and 60gig hd.

When I click on my favorites menu in internet explorer it opens up a explorer window instead of going to the web site. Then I have to click on the short cut again in this new window in order for the short cut to work.
At that point my computer opens another internet explorer window, so each time I use the fav menu I get another open explorer window and then another open internet explorer window so this adds up to lots of open windows and I am always closing these unecessary windows.
It just started doing this after the computer was in storage for a while. Anyone know how to fix this problem?

hey guys

first of all I want to wish any of you a merry christmas and a happy new year, may luck be brought to you for the year 2011 (and all the years that might follow).

Anyway, what I was wondering is if there is any possibility to add the "Explore"-function when browsing the menu that is popping-up when clicking on your CD/DVD/BluRay-ROM station. Something like in the good old Windows XP, because I'm missing that function alot. I do now have a shortcut on my desktop which is pointed to D:\ (my DVD rom station), but it would be alot more handsome if it was just added onto the "right mouse click-menu". Is there any option or ability to do this?

The "New" <Folder> is still there and works properly.

I ran Adaware, Spybot, Norton Anti-virus, Windows Anitispyware. I ran Adaware first and it found eight entries which I deleted. After that, the other programs found nothing.

Any idea how I can remove this entry from the menu?

I am running windows XP home edition SP 2, accessing internet via Road Runner. I upgraded Internet Explorer. It froze so I killed it and restarted again. It finished properly the second time, or so it seemed.

IE7 ran OK the first time. The 2ns time it froze on a blank window. No toolbars, no status bar, no nothing, just the frame and blank inside.

Other symptoms: Internet Options opens up OK from the control panel, and every tab seems OK, but when I go connections, LAN settings, the button shows depressed, and the thing freezes.

I can access the WWW without a problem via Firefox. Outlook sends and receives email without a hitch. But any program that checks internet options to see about proxy settings or similar, freezes. Example Intellicast and the Zinio reader. Example the setup program for Max Registry Cleaner and Registry Mechanic.

I ran a virus scan with AVG. The machine was clean. I cleaned up the registry with RegistryFix. There were a lot of lose ends, now it is clean. I ran AVG Anti Spyware. It has a residue of 45 tracking cookies, nothing else. I uninstalled Intellicast and the Zinio reader. Nothing made a difference.

Whenever I click something, for some reason, my laptop will just freeze. However, I can move my mouse around. Also, this doesn't just happen for a few minutes, this goes on forever. I had it sitting for about an hour with no luck, and it was just frozen. How do I fix this? Does anybody know a solution?

Hi ZWeldy, welcome to the forum!

First, make sure you don't have a virus or malware problem. Then run sfc /scannow: SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8

I was wondering whether people could help me with a problem I have.

I have the following machine, Titan Vantage" AMD Athlon 64 3500+ System (FS-004-OK)

- AMD Athlon 64 3500+
- AMD approved cooler
- MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra PCI-Express Motherboard
- GeIL 1GB Value (2x512MB) DDR PC3200 CAS2.5 Dual Channel Kit
- 250GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 16mb Cache SATA 150 Hard Drive
- Leadtek nVidia GeForce 6800 GT 256MB DDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card
- NEC ND3540 16x DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter
- Onboard 6 Channel Audio
- Floppy Drive
- Arctic Cooling Silentium Silent Midi Tower Case
- Seasonic True 350W Silent ATX Power Supply

The machine, will suddenly freeze, it occurs when playing games, using applications like Google Earth, and has occured on the desktop. There is a sound like a click, simular to when the sound card comes on.

I have run, virus checks, spybot etc.

Initially I thought it was the hard drive, as when it crashes in games the system disk has become corrupted, with the report of a disk error. SO I repaired the windows OP.

However the recent crashes, do not cause the Hard Disk to report an error so it must be something else.

Could it be due to the onboard sound card?

Hello guys ive created an account here for this problem.
Im not sure if im in the right forum but im sure ill soon find out.

Just recently ive been having some problems with my pc and im ready to pull my hair out because i just cant work it out.

Basically every so often my pc will just randomly freeze for about 2 seconds. As soon as the freeze starts something powers up (like a fan begins to wir, kinda like when you put a disk in and it loads up. Sorry for the bad description).

Then as soon as the freeze stops something clicks in the tower. Im not sure what it is, it could be a hard drive or my dvd drive i have no idea but its becoming a comon occurance. It does it from doing pretty much anthing from playing a game to opening a folder on the desktop etc. I just have no idea whats going on but its so anoying.

If you need a full spec of my pc i can post it. Im just looking for any help at all.

Thanks a lot,

Kaimera.

Hi, I've just started to have a problem with my computer recently, when I right click a file or folder it freezes up until I end the task and then it refreshes my desktop, I tried rebooting and checking for malicious threats and nothing came up so far, I'm at the end of my wits trying to figure this out.

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I did not know where to put this thread as the problem is really weird, so i apologize if this thread is in the wrong section.

I have a few problems that i feel somehow are caused by one main fault in my system. But ultimately, they all freeze the com. I'll list the problems one by one.

1. When i clear my internet explorer history (deleting cookies, autocomplete list all included), it takes forever and the cursor will turn into the hourglass. And when the process is done, i click the 'ok' button of course, but this freezes my IE. Then i have to use ctrl alt del to force close the program.
NOTE. This applies to many other applications too.

2. Another example of the first problem. I do some changes to my taskbar settings, and after i'm done, i click ok and it hangs. Again i have to force close the windows and the "program not responding" stuff will appear. Sometimes it will say something a certain kernel file having some problems, and i wanted to type it here, but that message doesn't show all the time.

3. When i wanna open my network connections window, be it from the system tray or from the start menu, it doesn't open. However, when i hit ctrl+Alt+del after this, the 'network connections" windows opens after the Windows Task Manager window opens. So i have to hit ctrl alt del everytime i open a window and its real'y bothersome.

My main concern is i seem to be having problems when i hit the 'ok' button on certain applications. Can someone find ... Read more

hi,
i've been having this problem of clicking on files and folders with the right button on my mouse only to have the whole folder freeze up. This only happens in the Windows Explorer folders (ex: my doc, my comp..etc) I have to go into the the task manager to the kill the process and then try to click it again. But then usually i have to kill the process like 3 more times and restart my comp to get it working again. Its not like when i right click the folder and its slow to open the menu, it just completely freezes.

I've tried everything from getting updates from microsoft and going into the registry and stuff, downloading new supposedly "missing" files to correct it, but nothing works. Its getting really annoying...

I dont think theres a virus cause i just installed a fresh new copy of XP like 1 month ago..it actually started happening a few days after i reinstalled it..

So is there anyway i can fix this problem? Thanks

I have an AMD Athlon, ASUS A7VI-VM motherboard, VIA ProSavage KM133 Chipset, 1.4 GHZ processor .70G HD and 256K memory.

I have fresh installed Windows XP. Since the install, when ever I launch the program for ClickSmart 510. I get a flash of video at startup, it then freezes and the whole program/computer freezes. This will also occur when I try to open Netmeeting. I am careful to open only one program at a time.

I get an error message “your camera is in use by another program, switch to end program”. When I switch, I get a program listed as “NewsUPD”. I have no idea as to what this program is for. It even appears if I have started the computer with no programs running in the background. I must manually restart the computer, to end the program. When I operated the camera on Win98 operating system. It worked great.

I have spent hours on the phone with both Logitech and Microsoft tech support, I have reinstalled the program and drivers numerous times, no success. Is there an adjustment I must make or an updated driver I should be using? Any help would be welcomed.

I consider myself a techno idiot. Detailed instructions would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Kevin

I have a Dell workstation 490, 3.2gig, 160gig disk and 4Gig of memory. It came loaded with XP pro and I have updated to all MS updates. I have had it for about a week and periodically when I want to copy something, the right mouse click freezes everything except the mouse cursor. Scanned with Avast and Trojan Remover. The CPU usage is less than 5% total and minimal memory usage (PF Usage @ ~575). The only way to clear it is to bring up the task manager. The task manager shows the process as ?not responding?, but easily kills the process. It doesn't do it all the time and it is not repeatable. If I clear the problem and bring up the files screen every thing goes normally. Additionally it does not necessarily do it in the same folder. Has anyone run across this problem?

I have to force shut down my computer and I HAVE to unplug it and plug it back in otherwise it won't turn back on. It's not the PSU and I've tried different graphics cards. Not sure what's going on. Please note todays date - 2 months after previous posting.

Tosh repair people found a faulty main board, two main boards later still not working also replaced screen and two other items.
Tosh headquarters refunded my money. Note, this model now listed as 'discontinued' and Tosh laptops not available to domestic users.

Sad as they have been good for me over the last 26 years. Have to look for something else now.

I am running 8.1 on an Asus laptop. As of yesterday, every time I try to right click a file inside my downloads folder, the hourglass symbol just hangs there and then the folder says not responding. I have to close it. I have opened in safe mode and the issue is not there. Everything works fine. I then tried a clean boot, but the problem persisted afterwards. Please help with this issue

Whenever I click in any file/shortcut on system programs under explorer.exe, (e.g. The desktop, Start Menu, Windows Explorer) even other file explorers(Total commander)
it hangs up and I have to restart the process in taskmanager!
the last thing i remembered added in the context menu was a bat file in "send to" folder(not without my consent so not malware issue).
The bat file's function was to move files in a folder within the folder it was originally on.
ex.
D:/Folder/filename.jpg
I right click on it>send to>new folder.bat
new location
D:/Folder/filename/filename.jpg

but I found it useless so i went to 'send to' folder to delete it.

And now Right click stopped working!

Have you tried to do a system restore to a point before you added the new folder? System restore doesn't always work for me for reasons unknown but you might want to try.
