Solved: Overall slow running speed

Q: Solved: Overall slow running speed

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit installed for probably a year. For the past few months, the computer's been running pretty slow. The OS takes long to completely boot, and by 'completely boot' I mean the time when you can launch programs. That is, after the OS has fully loaded all of its processes.

Symptoms of slow speed:

Launching a certain 1GB installation (.exe) file causes Windows Explorer to freeze, which requires manually terminating its process and then restarting it.
Start Menu search takes relatively long to show results.
Desktop icons automatically refresh when closing some Windows Explorer windows.
Windows Explorer permanently/temporarily freezes when using it. It also takes very long to scan drives (that is: partitions, DVD drives, etc...).
How do I go about finding the root of this evil?

Update: Looks like all of the problems were solved merely by moving the 1GB .exe file from D drive to C drive. Now everything is as speedy as it should be.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have installed superanti spyware and that found some stuff to delete, Im quite computer illiterate, the internet is running at about 4 or 5 for speed and it should be 8 according the internet provider, they said everything is fine from their end, however I may have programs running on the computer that shouldnt be and are slowing it down, Im not sure if this is a spyware issue, virus, program not needed? Under the windows task manager the system idle process is 98 under the cpu, everything else is 0, I dont know if that makes a difference?

Hi guys. I hope you can help on this issue I've been having with my internet connection, I don't know what to do...

I resently formatted my harddrive because my internet all of a sudden started being very slow but after the format it's still the same issue. Now I've tried plugging the connection line into my laptop and there there's no problem.

I am gettin' a slower download than upload...

I have a 10mb download/1 upload speed LAN connection. I ran a speed test on the same connection and on my stationary it shows like 250 kbs download and like 750 kbs upload, while on my laptop it shows like 8 Mbs download and 750 kbs upload... so what's the problem?

So far I've found out that it has nothing to do with the internet connection line or my NIC (I tried a brand new one and it was the same issue), it's not spyware or malware, it's not fragmented and under internet connections it says that I'm connected on a 100 Mb network card and there are no problems with any of the devices?

However I can see that if I open the job list, the download connection is very unstable going from up to 750 kb for a breif moment then falls to a halt at 0 kb... and moreover it says that I'm not using any percent of the network?

I'm on windows 7 and haven't had any problems before this, the rest of the system works just fine, but not the internet. If I try and download something it won't get higher than like 50 kb and then may... Read more

I have this very annoying problem and I'm really out of hopes. I don't know what to do anymore. I'll make a summary of the problem and will be as concise as possible

So I have this Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop with a broadband connection (direct cable, no router) and 3 weeks ago I reinstalled my Windows. Everything went well until 2 weeks ago when the internet speed went down, dial-up like. Pages won't load, and if they do they load just partially. I called my ISP and they said they had no problem. I couldn't find any solution so I thought maybe, some sort of virus or spyware is doing this so I formated the whole hard-disk and did a clean install of Windows.

Unfortunatelly nothing changed, the download speed is the same. Here is a speedtest.net evaluation:

Drivers are up to date, no windows firewall, no antivirus and no windows update. The ISP support guy told me to deactivate IPv4 and IPv6 from Local Area Connection, but nothing changed. I did a TCP/IP reset which raised my down speed to almost 1 Mb, but after a few minutes it went back to "dial-up". With the down speed being the same, Speedtest sometimes shows me upload speed in between 50-70 Mb which is unbelievable (I will make a ss next time I see this).

And the very weird thing is that I have another netbook (pretty weak config, Intel Atom CPU, 2 GB RAM) and with the same cable it has normal speed (the kind of speed I had on this Dell too). An... Read more

This one has been kicking my butt for a while and I just can't seem to sort it out.
Laptop is an HP 15-f039wm, running Win10 Home, with an Intel Celeron N2840 CPU:
Intel Processor N2840 (1M Cache, up to 2.58 GHz) Specifications
A while back (laptop isn't mine), the user noticed that it was now running very slow. Turns out the CPU speed is horribly lower than it should be. It's only running at 500 MHz (yes, 0.5 GHz) via a multiplier of 6x83.333 MHz even when under heavy load. I think the multiplier should be more like 26.
The issue isn't hardware related at all: I can take a test HDD, put it in, set it up with a fresh Win10 install and the CPU is fine... idling low, but jumping up high all the way to rated speed under load. But I'd like to save this existing Windows/app environment if at all possible, and fix the issue surgically.
I've tried updating the BIOS (there's also no BIOS settings worth anything or applicable as far as I can tell... it's pretty anaemic). I've also tried updating all the Win10 drivers HP has available for this model. No change.
Any thoughts or advice?
(My technical skill level is extremely high so feel free to ask me to do whatever or provide any info you need, without dumbing it down or painful hand-holding instruction.)

Hi there,

My computer has been running slow for few months now despite having a high speed internet connection. I have tried to fix it by having its set up changed. It didn't fix the problem. It was working fine but one day it suddenly started running slow. At first I thought it must be a problem with the servers of my network provider but that wasn't the case. I've called the cable company to check several times but they said other users were able to use internet in full speed without any problem. I noticed the problem by trying to watch videos from various websites and after this problem occurred, they started loading super, super slowly. It has gotten to a point that I can no longer watch TV shows, movies, and other videos. The only video website that works is YouTube and even that doesn't function completely normally. Only most YouTube videos work without getting stuck too much. Another thing which I must mention is that quite often the internet cuts off in midst of browsing sessions and it doesn't reconnect without restarting the computer. My computer is a Dell laptop pc with Intel core i5 processor. I suspect that maybe my LAN card has worn out and it needs to be replaced. Although, I have been told by some computer technicians to not to do so. But they weren't able to give me any solutions. So here are my questions:

1. Should I get my LAN card changed?
2. If I should get my LAN card replaced, what model do I need that's compatible w... Read more

This is my mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131631
I have Win7 x64

and this is what CPU-Z is showing:

A:Solved: Is my RAM running at a proper speed?

info copy/paste here, your ram is controled by your bios your ratio 3:10 is not good but not bad either, if you want to optimum out of those ram sticks you will need to keep fiddling in your bios advanced settings/overclcoking section
your mobo will always look for the safest clock speed by default

he DRAM frequency that is shown by CPU-Z can be somewhat confusing.

CPU-Z shows the real clock frequency from the memory controller to the RAMs. This frequency is within the RAMs doubled through DDR (Double Data Rate) technique, so in your case the frequency 668 in CPU-Z means DDR3-1336MHz.

The FSBRAM ratio has become unnecessary confusing.
Most peope have heard that a 1:1 ratio is the optimal ratio. Although that is still true, it made more sense in the old days (some years ago) before DDR technique and quad pumping and dual pumping of the clock frequency entered the scene.

Today a true 1:1 relation between the bus frequency and memory speed means a FSBRAM ratio of 1:2.
(E.g. bus frequency "FSB" = 333MHz (FSBqdr = 1333MHz) and memory frequency DDR3-1333Mhz)

Okay. So I took on a little project last night, and I do not even know if this has anything to do with my problem, its just the last thing that changed before I had issues. I lapped my Heatsink and CPU to make a more even contact surface. Anyway I won't go into that much for now.

I put the PC back together like I have a hundred times. I was prompted before windows loaded that there was a checksum error and the defaults were loaded. No big deal seen this before. Sometimes it happens when hardware is removed and reinstalled. So I just booted into windows with the default BIOS settings. Once I get into windows I am excited to check on my temps so I load up CPU-Z, Real Temp, and Hardware monitor. Funny thing I noticed with CPU-Z was it was reading my processor (i7-950) at only about a 1/4 of the clock speed, around 500Mhz. Should be about 3.2Ghz at stock levels. I figured maybe it glitched and so I rebooted. Once back in windows it was loading the correct clock speeds, up until I went to stress test the CPU for temp read outs. It then scaled back the multiplier down from a x24 to about a x4-6. Why it is doing this I have no idea. It now does it before a stress test, usually when I just try to load applications to monitor system performance it scales its self back. It is not sitting very Hot at all, actually quite cool. I have attached a print screen of my temps and CPU-Z read out.

At this point the troubleshooting I have performed is: Reset the CMOS to load default settin... Read more

I just got a new Dell PC with XP Pro. I have DSL with an advertised download speed up to 728 Kbits/sec. My internet speed seemed sluggish so I tested it over the last 5 days, several times a day at different times. The download speed varied between 54-171.
I tried disabling the firewall & anti-virus software (scary) but neither made a difference.

Could this be a problem with my ISP or could it be my PC? Is there such a thing as configuring a PC to be optimised for DSL rather than dial-up?

I just bought a new Laptop with Windows 8. But when I tried to connect to Wi-Fi the first time switch it on, it did connect but it can't access to the internet (It said "Limited"). So I re-installed the wi-fi driver. The "Limited" warning was gone but the internet speed was really slow (The laptop wasn't too far from the router).
I had also tried to change the wi-fi channel but it still slow. I just used windows 8 for the first time, did I miss some configuration? Other devices in my house can connect to this Wi-fi network and work fine, except this new laptop.

Thank you for any further answers and helps.

A:Solved: Net Speed Slow

That screen shot doesn't tell us anything useful. I do see uTorrent running there, that can cause any number of bandwidth issues. Try killing that process and see if things improve.

How about telling us the real issue?

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model of the router.
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.

Also, please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

On any problem computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

The USER PROFILES option NEVER WORKED ON THIS COMPUTER ~ I have tried to make different profiles, but it never worked. So, it's not only the two of us on it, but now my son wants to use it also. I know this is taking up huge amounts of space & memory. I've tuned it up, taken off unused programs, cleaned it out, and it still doesn't run very well. Pages load eventually, and they can IM pretty quickly.

My question is... can I buy more memory for this computer and make it faster? or should we just buy another tower?? I thought that you could open it up & add another memory board to it?

My next step is to take all my photos & music & put it on my external hard drive, then remove them all from this computer. I just bought myself a laptop, but haven't "broken it in" yet. And, there's a lot of information on this desktop that is still being used by me.

I have an Asus 1000HA netbook with XP, atom processor, and 2GB RAM that is running and starting up very slowly. It also is freezing up frequently. Any audio skips, making dialog sound like the speaker is stuttering. (Video is not even either.) Fortunately, no blue screens have appeared yet. I've run scans for Malwarebytes (found nothing), AVG (found and killed 2 corrupted files), run disk cleanup, and defragmented. I tried a system restore, but it would not complete and an error check would not complete ("Windows is unable to complete the error check"). I've thought about trying a registry cleaner, but I've seen conflicting reports about those.

Any suggestions about what could be wrong and how to fix it? Thank you!

I am trying to copy files from one Windows 7 PC to another Windows 7 PC using Wi-Fi. I mounted the directory of PC A on PC B and then I am dragging and dropping the file to copy it.
All the PCs on my Home Network are 802.11 N. All the PCs are on the same Homegroup.
PC to PC speed is 1-2MBs but if I drag the same file to my cloud storage it is 80+MBs (these numbers are bases on the More Details in the transfer window)
I tried turning off IPv6 (suggestion from another site)
I tried turning off Remote Differential Compression (suggestion from another thread on this site)
I'm not expecting ultra high speed, but 5MBs would be nice!
Any suggestions?

My PC is getting extremely slow of late to open web pages and to send attachments to e-mails etc. Last evening I thought it might be my anti virus slowing things down (AVG) so thought I might try a different anti virus (AVAST) to see if that would improve things. Couldn't download AVAST with AVG installed so uninstalled AVG but AVAST still wouldn't load so went back to reinstall AVG. This took over an hour!!!
Speaking of problem to colleague decided to look at transfer speeds, he and I decided to check his transfer speed compared to mine.
When trying to download AVAST for a test his transfer speed was 85KB/sec and mine was 5.3KB/sec!!!!!!! Both of us are using Windows XP SP3 but with different ISP's.
Any suggestions please.

What is the ratio supposed to be between the download speed and the upload speed in a normal working configuation?

My webpages are taking forever to load. I used this speedtest...
and the result was

download speed: 7.427 Mbps
upload speed: 0.006 Mbps

This problem started yesterday and I don't know how to troubleshoot or fix the problem.

Here is my system and equipment that I am using:

My provider is cable, Brighthouse, hooked up to their Scientific Atlanta modem and from there it is hooked up to a Belkin Connect N150 wireless router. I am not using the wireless on my laptop but am wired directly to the router.

Whatever your ISP declares it to be (presumably they have configured their network that way). For example, my cable ISP advertises 12 Mbps down, 1 Mbps up.

I'm not convinced that the results from that Verizon test are reliable for people who do not have Verizon service. How about trying Speedtest.net? Using that what results do you get with a connection to the router, and what do you get with a connection directly to the modem?

I am using DSL to connect to the internet and a Gateway G6-450 Pentium II 450mhz computer with 160MB of RAM. I use Windows 98, IE 6 and Outlook Express. Download speed is about 415kbps but upload speed is only .8 to 2 kbps if that. I can receive emails and attachments just fine but can't send even the smallest attachment, only text messages. Web pages download very slow and sometimes don't load all the way. I also get GDI32.dll errors quite often. I can connect a different computer and everything works fine on it, so I know the problem is not with my DSL provider. Gateway tech support can not seem to help either. I have ran adaware and spybot s&d and removed spyware it has detected. I use a avast! antivirus and it does not detect any viruses. This just started a couple of months ago. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: So relieved now, solved the problem.
I don't know what the problem is and its starting to get on my nerve.

Just a couple of weeks ago my internet was running at its normal speed, but then just recently its running a lot slower. The normal download speed for my Qwest DSL was about 1000 kbps but now its around 300 kbps and my normal upload speed was about 1500 kbps and now its around 400 kbps.

I did a full system virus/spyware scan and found some stuff and deleted them but I'm still having the same problem. I heard from somewhere else that the Internet Security Suite could be slowing down the internet, but I ruled that out becuase I had Zonealarm Internet Security Suite for a long time and it has never slow down my internet.

Well I think I provided everything I know so far. Any help would be nice and if you need more info, I'll try to provide as much as I can.

I have a BT broadband adsl connection and regularly have download speeds of over 3000kps. My upload speeds are however usually in the region of 260 kps. I use Speakeasy to run the speed tests and they say that upload speeds should be similar to download speeds. Is this right? I am running win xp sp2 and connect to a router via an ethernet cable. Using firefox browser. Any advice appreciated.

A:Solved: Slow upload speed

Check with your ADSL service provider to see what speeds come with your particular service. At least in the USA, many broadband provider's packages have upload speeds that are slower than the download speeds.

I have had this Gateway Processor for a number of months now. It came loaded with Windows 8 and when we got it, it seemed incredibly fast compared to our old E-Machine with Vista. It still seems okay, except for sometimes, but I found a note in my computer file with the www.speedtest.net website and decided to take the free speed test just to see. Well, the results are not good. They say my download speed is only 2.97 and my upload speed is .85 and my "Ping" is only 8. Can you suggest what I might do to improve this?

Here's the problem. My laptop is not getting the same download speed that it usually does. I usually get about 2-3Mbs but lately it has been under 100kbs and sometimes out completely. I am using a Netgear wnr2000 wireless router with at&t yahoo as the service provider. at&t says that there is nothing wrong with the connection on their side. The network has a password so nobody but me and two other computers should be using the internet. The two other computers are wired and the 2-3Mbs is what I used to get when they were all running at the same time. I have looked through the old posts and I have only found 1 or 2 people with the same problem as me but there threads have not helped me. Well I'm not to sure what else I can say. Thanks for the help.

A:Solved: slow download speed

OP here. I just ran a speed test on it in Safe mode with Networking and it got 4.75Mbs. So obviously it has something to do with my computer when it is booted normally. Could it be that I have a virus/spyware/adware that is hogging all my bandwidth? I've ran windows defender and AVG and they didn't rind anything. I know thoes arent the most credible programs but I don't have that much money to spend on high end stuff . What can I do?

I have un-installed and re-installed my Linksys E1200 wireless N300 router several times, and can only achieve about .5 MBPS d/l and ~6.0 MBPS u/l data speeds, on a 3 year old HP laptop, running Windows 7. This is wireless service, and the laptop is within 4 feet of the router. I have Comcast service on my desktop, and my "connected" normal d/l speed is ~30 MBPS, with ~5 MBPS u/l. Don't know what else to do. I have connected the laptop directly to the modem, and get 30 MBPS speed, so there is something I'm missing in the wireless router setup.

Hi, I have the sierra aircard 875u, ATT 3g, Ijust bought the MBR 1000 router to network. THe speed on the host is actually faster than using the att communication manager. However, on the other computer itis really slow. Previously I had a linksys N router and managed to get internet sharing up and there was no speed issue. THe speed noted on the client is 54mbs, signal strength "very good" However this is extremely slow, slower than a dial up connection.
Is this typical, is there a way to speed it up? Could the problem be a slow network card?

I got spoiled having a cable modem for the last year. Now I'm in a situation where I can't use it and have to rely on a dial up 56k connection to access the internet.

I have a fast enough pc, running an Insignia Pentium 4 at 2.8 ghz using windows XP. The modem is the one that came with it...a Creative Blaster PCI Value DI5652-1. I have checked with the provider a couple of times, and can't seem to get past a 26.4 connect on this 56K modem. Are there any particular initilization strings that can get this modem working faster?
