Flashing Desktop after Windows 10 upgrade

Q: Flashing Desktop after Windows 10 upgrade

I got a flashing desktop (goes black and desktop) after upgrading to Windows 10. After logging in, it is fine for about 10-15 seconds, then it will start flashing. I couldn't do anything - click on anything except CTRL-ALT-DELETE to go to Task Manager. I did the upgrade 2x already. Before my first attempt, I did not do anything with my PC - I did not do any driver updates. When I got the flashing desktop after ugrading, I panicked and immediately rolled back to Windows 7. I was able to get to the Recovery window during the 10-15 seconds time frame right after logging in. Thankfully, it went back to Windows 7. After the first try, I read a little bit about the similar issue and so I tried some of suggested solutions - to update drivers on my PC, to disable Windows reporting services (While on Win 10), to try to go to Safe Mode. So I tried again. I updated all the things I can update (drivers mostly) before the upgrade. Did PC Clean up. I got the flashing desktop again. It's the same. So while, it's flashing, I tried to disable the Windows reporting services which is very difficult to do with the flashing desktop. It did not do anything obviously. So I went to Safe Mode. After booting to safe mode, I got the normal desktop screen for about 5 seconds but a blue window quickly flashed then the desktop on Safe Mode just turned black, with only the mouse pointer visible. So, I rolled back to Windows 7 again. I don't have a lot of stuff/programs on my PC as I uninstall programs right away if I know I will not use it. I do PC cleanup/Virus scan on a regular basis. Info regarding my machine:HP Pavilion p6210yWindows 7 Home Premium, 64 bitVideo card: NVIDIA GEForce 9100 Any suggestions/help will be much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

The only thing that solved the issue is resetting my machine while keeping my personal files. I never figured out what really caused it. So, after the upgrade while the screen is flashing, I was able to reset the PC.

I just updated to Windows 10 from Windows 7, and now my computer starts flashing out of no where. The taskbar and the desktop starts flashing. When this happens I can not do anything. When it stops, I can not use the start button. I do not know what to do.

A:Taskbar and Desktop Flashing After Upgrade

I had this problem too. I booted into safe mode using the Shift+restart method. then once i was there and youre at your desktop, click the windows logo + X and select device manager. Find your graphics drivers ( for example mine was intel integrated graphics) and uninstall them. if there is an option to get rid of the current drivers do that as well. Once your PC has restarted see if the flashing continues. (mine did not) go back into the device manager and right click your graphics and "click Scan for hardware changes", if nothing appears you should be good i hope this helps!!

I have a windows 8 laptop. It takes forever to boot. It automatically goes to the desktop. After the icons have loaded, they all disappear. I am left with the taskbar, which is empty except for the windows logo. Then the whole screen flashes between dark blue and light blue.
I got into safe mode, and the same thing happens. It doesn't give me time to do anything. In safe mode I opened IE, then it started flashing, all the icons disappeared. IE stayed on the screen but it was inoperable.
I don't have any system disks to reinstall or repair from.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Check out this tutorial on how to boot into safe mode: Safe Mode - Start Windows 8 in

How old is the laptop? If it's still in warranty, you may want to send it back to HP for repair.

About two weeks ago I turned my Lenovo PC on and after I logged in the desktop and icons wouldn't quit blinking. It doesn't do this when I open the task manager screen and it doesn't do this in safe mode. My video drivers updated before I turned it off and when I turned it back on it started. I have checked my drivers and they are still up to date. Any help is appreciated.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

In Device Manager under Display adapters right-click the adaptor > Properties > Driver and use the Rollback driver option (if it's available). Did that stop the flashing ?

Hi,

I recently updated to 8.1 from 8. Now when I start my laptop, it boots up normally and loads my desktop screen, but the screen flashes every 10 seconds or so, sometimes more.
In addition to this, all my desktop and taskbar icons are gone/not showing, and when I put my mouse over the taskbar it displays the loading symbol and I can't click on anything. Task manager shows a certain process is using 100% of the diskspace. Should I just kill the process?
Help would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks.

Yes, kill all those Seagate Dashboard tasks. Then disable/uninstall it and see if things are better. May need to reboot also.

EDIT: Also, Indexing Service may cause high usage for awhile after a major update/upgrade.

My friend's laptop is having a strange issue where the desktop flashes on and off with the theme color.

I did a virus and malwarebytes scan, and found nothing.

I turned off all startup programs except a few.

It seems to work fine in Safe Mode, however.

Here is a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pXMqmvZhhw

Does anyone know what this issue is and how to fix it?

Let me know.

Thanks,

David

A:Windows 8 Strange Issue with desktop flashing on and off

Hi davidkimball,

At first glance, I'm suspecting a graphics' driver/card issue but I could be wrong. In any event, could you check the Event Viewer logs to see if there are any entries being logged that are "time-coincident" with the flashing? If some are found, please post a few examples. However, if none are found, do you have an extra monitor you could try?

Today I started experiencing several issues with my primary desktop pc.

WinXP Pro - Home built system

First thing that noticably started to happen was my taskbar started to flash randomly. Closed out and noticed it was my desktop icons as well. Rebooted and then ran SpyBotand AdAware back to back. Multiple trojans and spyware found and removed. Rebooted. Same symtoms.

It seems everything on my pc is accessable via Task Manager> Run however it only takes 10 minutes or less before the taskbar and icons stop flashing and are gone completely. Prior to that they are 'clickable' and 'accesible' if you can catch them between flashes

Tried running anti-virus (AVG) and discovered 2nd issue, at somepoint around 20 min into scan My computer rebooted.

Tried going into safe mode and running scan again, this time I stayed close and watched (boring) Got this error msg before pc rebooted again"

"DCOM Server Process Launcher terminated unexpectantly ...."

Since I upgraded to Windows 8, I am no longer able to save individual Remote Desktop Connection files as .rdp files. I am talking about the traditional Remote Desktop Connection application on the Desktop that was in previous Windows versions, not the
Remote Desktop App from the Windows 8 store.
When I try to click on the Save button I get "An error occurred while saving to file"
When I try to click on the Save As button I get "Unable to open connection file" with the file address being where I tried to save it with the file name at the end.
Also when I upgraded to Windows 8, my .rdp files disappeared from my Documents folder.
I need to create different .rdp files for different programs that my employees get into on my server. Now I have to hand type all the info each time into the Programs tap on the Remote Desktop Connection window, because I can't save to an
.rdp file.
I like the Remote Desktop App from the Windows store but it won't let me designate specific programs to use using standard dos notation (ie c:\program files\ etc..). It just goes to my server desktop.
I want to promote Windows 8 to my employees but I need either .rdp files for the traditional Remote Desktop Connection or the ability to open specific programs using dos notation in the Windows Store Remote Desktop App.

There is two accounts on my laptop, one for me and one for my dad. The one for me is Admin and password protected, but my Dad's is restricted and non password protected. He complained to me one day that the desktop kept refreshing, so I logged into his account. Then, when Windows loaded, I thought everything was fine until after about three seconds when everything seemed to have "Refreshed". The icons and the bottom bar would dissappear and re-appear every few seconds. When I viewed my processes, I saw Explorer.exe terminating and restarting again.

Google got me nothing, and Norton/A bunch of spyware programs did not help, so I created a new account for him and moved some powerpoint files there. It worked fine. After, I decided that it's okay now, so I deleted the old account that was having the explorer.exe troubles. But now, the new account that I thought was safe is doing the same thing. Does anyone know why? Because it's not happening on my account.

Hi Everyone.

The last week or so, a desktop on one computer(1st) (on a network with multiple computers) begins to flash off and on. The desktop is not responsive at all, however I can open programs like outlook or chrome and use them while behind, the desktop is flashing.

I have found out that if I restart a different computer(2nd) on the network the flashing stops! While the first computer I mentioned is flashing, a third computer(3rd) on the network will have the spinning circle on the mouse pointer, spinning of and on constantly. And again once I restart that network computer(2nd) the flashing on the 1st computer stops and the spinning circle on the 3rd computer stops...That 2nd computer threw a "sihost" error, but I only seen that once.

I have turned off the recommended services listed on other forums, I don't see any of the 3 programs Microsoft has said caused this installed.. And I have done complete virus removals on the computers.. During the scans it found minimal items and nothing too serious.

I am not sure what to do... Every time I think it is fixed the issue comes back. I have been a tech for 10 years or so and never came across anything like this?

If anyone has any insight or solutions please let me know. My clients needs to be up and going correctly.

I have hp pavilion g6-2249 wm notebook. My laptop is 4 months old. Two days ago when I started my
pc, the welcome page opens and then I sign in. Everything is ok on the apps page that immediately opens.
If I click the desktop app icon, it goes to the desktop and the entire page starts to flash, it shows the desktop
for 2 seconds and then then flashes to blue for 5 seconds and back and forth, etc.

The desktop will not stay open long enough for me to do anything. I cannot get it to start in safe mode. I clicked
F8 repeatedly on start up but nothing happens. I used the esc on startup and ran every test offered except BIOS.
I don't know what to do with that so I didn't mess with it. All tests were ok.

If I go back to the app page from the flashing desktop, the app page and charms start flashing also. I can't even
shut down properly then. Norton 360 runs in the background all the time but I can't get to it to do a scan. I
can't get to any file. The only way to get online is to turn off pc and turn on later. App page does not flash at
that time. I go to search and click on Explorer and I can go to my homepage. If I click on required addons then
the background starts flashing and I have to reset my cursor every two letter that I type. I am going crazy.
Can someone help me???
Thanks

If you can do this, you can get to Safe Mode:

Windows key + C.
Settings
Power
Hold shift key and click RESTART.
then you have all the options.

Click on Advanced Options then Startup Settings.
Click Restart and you have almost the full advanced Boot Options menu like XP, Vista or Win 7.

Hey,

I'm having a slight problem with my PC, I don't know the cause as of yet but I'm guessing it may be a virus of some sort. Yesterday my computer froze and when I restarted it, everything was normal, except for when it reached the Desktop. The icons & task bar began to flash on and off. I tried restarting the system but to no avail. Now the icons & taskbar don't flash on at all and i'm left with the desktop's background image and nothing else. I tried to do a System Restore but I have no dates that I can restore to apart from yesterdays date after it all began, so that's no use. If anyone can help with what the problem might be and a fix, it would be appreciated.

Oh, and the specs of the PC are:

You are unable to do anything because the whole screen disapears and when it returns the task you attempted to start has stopped. I have tried in Safe mode as well. Using windows XP restore wont work either. Is the a virus? I am a computer tech and have never experienced this before. The only solution i have found is to reinstall Xp Pro. Also of the three system, all stated that they had just finished an update. One was with Norton System works 2004 and one with MS update. The other was unsure. All have Service Pack 2 as well. The third machine has a variant of the above problems in so much as it will not allow you to activate any system command. ie. Restore, control panel, my computer etc. It is a slow system and hence the flashing is not as quick yet in safe mode it appears to be the same problem. Please help.

Thanks,

Wendy

Hello there

My desktop machines' screen starts continuously flashing after I log on . The log on screen is fine and I can type my password but when it switches to my desktop ,the screen starts flashing every second and doesn't allow any cursor operation from the mouse . I can access the Task manger via Cntrl/ Alt / Delete . An error dialogue box as per the photo attached displays on screen after I hold the on off button to shut down . Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks

My Desktop is flashing from normal to an error message saying that it has been changed. It has a bar that says "to restore desktop click here" I've tried to click, but nothing happens. I can't pull any of my programs up, because they disappear when the screen flashes. I did get to the system restore, but it won't give me an option to restore to an earlier date (meaning that when the calender comes up, there is no other date besides yesterday). It will let me online if I do it quick enough, but I can see the flashing in the background. I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to completely restore, and loose all that is saved. I'm using an emachine, with windows XP. Can Anyone help?

Thanks,

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today. Without meaning to sound condescending, please don't fix entries yourself with HijackThis; it can actually do more harm than good because the main bulk of the log lists legitimate items. Please download VundoFix to your Desktop.Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.Click the Scan for Vundo button.Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button. You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YESOnce you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo. When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt in your next reply. Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting. Please include VundoFix.txt and a new HijackThis log in your next reply. Thanks,Charles

I didn't notice this problem until I installed the Jaton GeForce 6200 graphics card. I installed it and updated the drivers. But now, sometimes when I open programs, there's this 1.5 by 1.5 inch square in the middle of the screen! If it happens when I open Google Chrome, then when I close it, there's a white square. If it's Steam, and I close it, it's a gray square. This is also really annoying when playing games, because it flashes on and off and makes gameplay difficult if not impossible. I have an LCD monitor and have already run a bunch of dead pixel tests, and haven't come up with anything. I have mcafee total protection, and I clean my registry weekly...can someone please tell me what's wrong?

Anybody can help? my desktop computer screen is flashing and can't get in at all? It is a flat screen computer (all in one). It is flashing so, can't even log in. thanks you.

A:dell desktop screen flashing

Does it only flash after loading or attempting to load Windows? or does it flash when you first power it on?
Do you get any beeps when you power it on?

If it only flashes when Windows loads, try running the Dell hardware diagnostics accessed by F12 at Power On. If that passes, my only suggestion is to do a factory reinstall from the Dell PC restore accessed by F8 at power on.

If it flashes when first powered on, that suggests a hardware problem. If it is still in warranty contact Dell support, if it is not, sadly the all in ones are basically a one motherboard with everything built on the board (like a laptop).

One final thing you can try, if this has a port for an external monitor, you could try that to see if its just the monitor that is the problem. Otherwise a new motherboard is likely what is required to fix it (or better yet, if this an older machine it may be time for a new one - sorry).

Windows Hate. I mean Windows 8! It's a little difficult to describe.  When logged in to any account the desktop starts flashing, slowily at first.  Every time it flashes or refreshes itself whatever is typed or partly open becomes undone.  For example if I manage to open a run command whenever I start typing after each flash/refresh the typing is undone.  Then it starts flashing even faster and makes it impossible to open anything or perform any task.  I managed to turn off  most items in msconfig and to enable safe mode which had to be done extemely quickly after log in. But after logging out of Safe mode (which seemed to works OK), and logging back into regular mode, the safe mode feature seem to be turned off again. Was able to run JRT and Esset while in safemode but did not solve the problem.

Thanks for your input!

Hello all. I got on my my laptop today, and after logging in and getting to my desktop, about every 8-10 seconds my toolbar and desktop icons disappear for a few seconds and reappear. This is extremely annoying as it minimizes whatever I'm doing each time it occurs. I don't know what caused this, but I try to keep my laptop well maintained and use the basic XP tools to keep everything running smoothly. This includes making restore points after maintenance work. I've tried to do a system restore, but the only date listed is from the time I logged on after it started doing this. My old desktop had a System Recovery that is available upon boot, but my laptop does not. If anyone could help me here it would be GREATLY appreciated because some applications I can't run and I can't access my college's website because of this. And again, any advice is highly appretiated. Thanks.
