Headphone Jack on Laptop Stops Working Until Laptop is Powered Off

Q: Headphone Jack on Laptop Stops Working Until Laptop is Powered Off

Have been having this problem for a while now.

Every so often, the headhphone jack on my laptop just stops working after hours and hours of the laptop being on.

The built-in speakers of the laptop work fine. What happens is that while the computer is in use (after some random amount of time), any hardware plugged into the headphone jack of the laptop will not playback sound. This includes headphones, speakers and the like. The sound device manager in control panel shows sound being output, and if the headphones/speakers are disconnected, the audio plays fine on the built-in speakers on the laptop.

I haven't been able to figure out what exactly causes this problem. I have tried resinstalling the driver several times. I am 100% sure it isn't the headphones of the speakers that I use as I use these speakers and headphones on many other devices (phone, tablet etc.)

The only way that this issue gets fixed is if the computer is shut down and then rebooted (a restart doesn't work, the computer has to literally lose power for the problem to be fixed).

It seems very intermittent and I'm not sure how to approach this problem

Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

One idea would be a look the power plan in use. If you are running with the default Balanced power plan you may be seeing that nterfere by conserving battery power temporarily turning the audio off being a constant drain. Another thought could be a result of the onboard audio chip itself getting too warm where the hardware protection circuit will then come in and deactivate all sound. That is usually seen as far as the cpu temp as well as other major components. The audio being onboard would also be monitored by the bios not so much by Windows.

The other possible cause of losing sound would be the headphone jack or the board end having a cold solder point getting warm and expanding just enough to break the connection until cooled off. The complete shutdown of power would tend to suggest a temp or regulation issue where either the power plan or temp monitoring would have to be watched. And one more thing would be setting the laptop on a fan cooled stand or effective notebook cooling pad to draw heat away from the unit if you are not already using one. Laptops are known to get quite warm with extended use since everything is packed into a tight space with the typical serious lack of air flow unlike the usual desktop with front, rear, and side or top case fans in use if not water cooled.

You have some things to consider in the list of things there. Increased overall cooling, not planning to use the laptop for extended periods of time which can allow for something to overheat if that is the case., changing the power plan to Performance if still set to the default Balanced might help. As for anything internal as far as a loose contact or cold solder point that would require a look once confirmed however by the factory or authorized service center/dealer where you could bring it in direct for examination.

The shutdown and restart could also be indication that the driver for the onboard is going to sleep on you or otherwise made inactive at random intervals and the fresh power up serves to refresh the driver as Windows loads it fresh all over again. Run into that one here at times but on a desktop machine.

Hi,

I have an Hp625 running Windows 7 Basic 32 bit - I can play music through my laptops built in speakers without any problems, but when I plug headphones (or external computer speakers) into the headphone jack no sound comes through them (and simultaneously the laptop speakers go mute). My computer is dual boot with ubuntu, and this problem appeared when I upgraded my Ubuntu version - still, I know that the jack works as it is working fine in Ubuntu, and Im sure the problem is fixable within windows!

I have tried for HOURS to fix this problem, and attempted everything obvious, plus read many threads on similar topics. Please help. My computer is using the IDT audio control panel, and according to windows everything us up to date and fine. BUT ITS NOT PLEASE HELP.

Are you experiencing the problem in windows or in ubuntu? Have you installed the sound driver for ubuntu when you upgraded your version of ubuntu. Have you updated the sound driver for windows?

Hi,

I have a dual boot of Fedora and Windows, and when I boot into Fedora, my headphones work fine. When I boot into Windows 7 64bit, my headphones don't work. My laptop speakers work fine however, and I tried re-installing drivers. I made sure that my headphones are the default playback device, and I only have one headphone jack.

Other people who had this issue solved it by replacing their audio jack, but for me that is not a problem because the audio jack works fine when I boot into Fedora.

Please help!

A:Laptop speakers working, but headphone jack not working only on Window

Normally, the "Speakers" (PC sound) is set as the Default Playback device and not Headphones. In fact, newer RealTek sound systems do not even show the Headphones when plugged in.

Are you using the correct sound drivers? Not the generic Windows installed High Definition Audio Codec.

What all is listed in the Device Manager, Sound section?

Hi, I have an older gateway laptop, with vista on it. The laptop says it charges fine, but once i power it up it makes somewhat of a screeching and a ringing noise, and stops charging. The main issue is, when the laptop is powerd down, its light that shows that it's chargine, or fully charged and plugged in, when i power the laptop, the charger just stops working, and does the screeching deal.

This is not really a problem as such, but I would like to know why this happens if someone could enlighten me.

I have a powered USB hub attached to my Acer Laptop. When I leave this attached and put the laptop into sleep mode, Windows closes down OK but the fan and hard drive keep running. If I power down the hub before entering sleep mode the laptop goes normally into sleep mode. Can anyone explain why this happens?

I usually listen to music with speakers through the headphone jack. When I unplug the speakers, the music plays through the stock laptop speakers like it is supposed to do.

However, all of a sudden, the sound has only worked through these external speakers. It plays fine through the headphone jack, but when I unplug the speakers, the laptop speakers do not work.

I have restored the computer to an earlier point that I know they were working, but still nothing.

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron E1705.

Everything works fine except there is no audio coming through the headphone jack or built-in speakers. I have spent majority of today looking online for answers on how to fix this issue and have found nothing that works.

The laptop model is a HP Pavillion dv6-1007tx.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I've had my laptop almost a full year and just a few days ago, I found the headphone port would not take my headphone jack in all the way. I used to just plug it in and it worked. Then over this last weekend, I tried plugging in my earbuds and the port would just push it back out. I could hold the jack in with my hand and get audio, though that's becoming more difficult. I think the problem is with the port and not the jack because I can plug the same jack into my mobile phone and it seats. I also tried the same thing with my old headset and the port would push it back out. Plug it into my mobilephone and the jack snaps in like it's supposed to. Is there a way to check if the port is out of alignment? If so could it be re-aligned or do I have to replace it? Thanks, John  H.

Just inside the headphone and mic ports, you should be able to see a black plastic or annular ring. This ring material usually holds the plug in place by friction against the slightly larger metal ring at the base of the plug's pin. This black annular ring might've dropped out of the port and rolled on the floor somewhere. 8^) Jack E/NJ

I use headphones for medical transcription. Today, they fell off the table after I took them off, and pulled at the headphone jack. Now, I can only hear sound from the headphones, but not from the laptop speakers. Is there a way to take apart the laptop in order to see if the headphone jack is cracked, or if it moved? If I plug in the headphone jack and jiggle it I can get sound from my laptop speakers, but once I take the headphone connector out of the jack, all sound is gone again from the laptop speakers. My laptop is still under warranty, but we don't want to send it out for repair unless it is absolutely necessary. Please help us -we would like to be able to fix this problem ourselves as money is short, and I need the laptop to be here so I can do my medical transcription. Thanks!

Like the headline says, I have a problem with sound on my Toshiba laptop (model is Satellite L755-S5110). Sound just randomly switches to headphones, even though they aren't connected. The sound just stops playing from the speakers, and when I plug in headphones, it plays normaly through headphones, and works fine while using them, but when I unplug headphones, the sound then plays from speakers for some time and then again just stops on its own and if I plug headphones again, it plays through them.
First, I thought it was some driver issue with win 10, so I did clean install of windows 7 (it was first installed when I bought my laptop), then again installed all the required drivers from the toshiba site (I checked in the device manager couple of times if all audio drivers were up to date, tried reinstalling/installing again), and the exact same problem remained. I also tried reinstalling audio driver provided from toshiba site, and used microsoft audio driver, and again the same problem.
Also, for example, when the sound stops playing from speakers, i just open Playback devices (where my default speakers device is listed), and the sound starts playing again through speakers (didnt change anything there, just opened it...)
I'd really appreciate if someone could help me with this issue, since I've already tried everything I could think of, and none worked yet.

I bought a new Inspiron 13 7368 2-in-1 with the Intel  i7 512gig SSD and 12 gigs of ram about a month ago. I love the machine but every time I add software or inadvertently turn it off  my headphone jack stops working as well as the keyboard sound control buttons. I have been able to recover functionality after 3 tech calls to Dell (4 hours) and a couple times on my own. The most recent time....NOT! I am really frustrated. The solution is never obvious so you can't just go fix the problem! Today I ordered Bluetooth earbuds so I can hopefully use headphones without using the headphone jack if this persists! As anyone figured this out?

Hello, thank you for taking the time to read my topic, and hopefuly reply.

Earlier today, I was on my laptop, and I closed the lid, headphones plugged in and working, operating perfectly fine, and locked the door behind me.

In no less then 2 minutes I returned, and the computer acted as if the headphones were not plugged in at all, playing from the built in speakers. I tried different pairs of headphones, all don't work, and I see no visible problems with any of them, I've checked them over multiple times for tears, exposed wires, and the like.

I think it may be something with the headphone jack itself internally, but frankly I know nothing about how the computer is built, so I wouldn't know.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this, thank you in advance.

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Just to verify, do you get a pop-up notification whenever you plugged-in a headphone / earphone?

If yes then your issue is most likely similar to this article. As per these specs, the Y50 uses an audio combo jack (headphone and mic). Although this port supports various mobile headphones, you may need to get a PC Headset to 3.5mm Smartphone Adapter if you're using a traditional headset with a separate.audio and mic connector.

It is recommended to fill out your system specs. I have no idea what your system is or what audio driver/manager you are using.

If you have a realtek HD audio card- Install the audio manager, and set it to allow setting to pop up when jacks are used. That way you can tell it if you inserting headphones, mic, etc, and it will mute the external speakers and use the headphones-otherwise it plays out the speakers (this is common if you have a realtek card, and use the default Microsoft hd sound driver/software codecs. You may also note the "volume knob" does not work)

If you have a realtek card install the realtek driver/audio manager here:http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

If you are inserting the headphones once film has started, chances are the film has already picked up the sound device as speaker and wants to use that. changing in the middle of something often results in no sound, for me at least. try plugging phones in before you turn the computer on, and leave them in. hopefully that should cure it. Please note the word hopefully...

The headphone jack still dosen't work right now. It isn't the headphones; I plugged them in on my laptop, and they worked perfectly (also, it was brand new). I need help to fix them. Can someone give me a different method?

Hi, I'm John and I'm having major problems here. I have been using a laptop for awhile and it's been working great. I have been using my pair of headphones for my laptop and they've been working great as well. However, after a bit, I noticed that the audio was not working really good. I thought it was the headphones until I tried more pairs, they did the same thing. The problem is that when I'm listening to a song, one part of the audio I can hear clearly, but the rest (the majority of the song) is either faint or muffled.

This happens when I put the headphone jack all the way in the output. When I take it out some, the majority of the song audio I can hear clearly, but the other parts I can barely hear. This really annoys me, and it really bothers me. Is their any professional or half-assed way to fix this? My headphones were loud and clear before, but now (out of nowhere) I can't hear 100% of anything I listen to. Can I get any help? I'd appreciate it greatly! This happened randomly and I'd like some answers, I have good hopes in replies!

Have you tried messing around in there at all? It should recognize where your headphones are plugged in and give you options to control them. Are you plugging into the front panel or the rear panel for audio on the headphones? Have you tried both???

About a couple months ago, I had to bring it to work. I supervised the use of this machine and everything was going fine. I brought it back home later to find out that when I plugged my headphones into the jack, it only gave me the sound in the LEFT ear. I thought it might have been my headphones but that's not the case. Anyway that I could fix it manually by myself OR will I have to replace something within the machine?

I recently got a pair of new headphones. Eager to try them out I plug them into my laptop audio jack. They worked perfectly with no problems and they sounded great.

Only a few hours later I decide to use them on my lappy again and the audio was only coming out of the left headphone speaker. This irritated me and I instantly thought that the headphones were faulty. I plug them into my ipod and notice the headphones are working fine. This leads me to think that it is something wrong with my laptop. I plug in a different pair of earphones into the jack and again, the left side only works.

I am confused as to whether it is my settings or my headphone jack but I'm more inclined to think that it is my headphone jack which is the problem. Is there anyone who has had a similar problem or anyone who may have an idea as to how to fix this?

Thanks,
Nick

Hello, I have a Compaq Presario CQ50 Notebook with Windows Vista, no add-ons. All sound comes from the notebook speakers, and nothing changes when I plug in headphones (I've tried multiple headphones, no dice). When I go to Playback Devices in the Sound Control Panel, the headphones aren't even recognized. Is the jack broken? Is it something I can fix by myself? Thank you in advance.

A:Headphone jack not working, not recognized

Go to Sound (right click on the speaker next to the clock) > Recording Button > right click on a blank space in that little window > check "Show disabled devices" > turn the mic on.

Hello I've bought my Lenovo laptop about half a year ago. From the very beginning the headphone audio jack had some problems, there would be no sound when headphones are plugged in, however restarting the laptop usually helped. I have not had this problem for a few months until now. When I plug in headphones, no sound comes out and restarting the computer does not help. Furthermore, the sound of the laptop speakers seems to be a big different than it normally used to be - the sound is a bit lower and so to say ''dimmer''. Please let me know I could fix it.

I have an HP Pavillion entertainment Laptop dv9700. I got a virus taken off my computer a few months ago but to take the virus off the computer place I took it took had to wipe my computer and then put all my data back. Since then I've had two frustrating problems:

1. When I plug my headphones into the headphone jack, the sound still plays from the regular speakers and I don't hear any sound in the headphones (I've already tried suing a different pair of headphones and that didn't help).

2. My microphone (which came pre-installed on the computer) doesn't work.

PLEASE help me. I'm taking a plane on Friday and REALLY need my computer to keep me sane during my layover. Thanks!!
