T590 not playing through external speakers

Q: T590 not playing through external speakers

I just got a T590 and started using it last week. I have two pairs of speakers, one (Harman Kardon) a little nicer than the other (Alans). When I first started using the laptop, I could play music using the Harman Kardon speakers just fine. A couple days in, I played music from the Alans speakers. After that, I tried to play music again from the HKs, but it won't work. It's almost like the laptop thinks the HK speakers are a microphone. When I connected them, a little microphone icon appeared on the screen. Under the sound settings in the control panel, it showed both external speakers and an external microphone, and when I tried to play music, it would show that the volume of the external microphone was very high, and the volume of the external speakers on but very low. The sound coming though the speakers was soft, garbled, and mixed with a lot of noise. I got the same results with a pair of headphones. The Alans speakers still work. In the Device Manager, my sound controller is "Realtek High Definition Audio(SST)". I have tried both disabling and re-enabling it, and uninstalling it and letting the computer reinstall, and downloading the driver from Lenovo and manually reinstalling. This did not fix the problem. It is the latest version ( I saw in this post something about using a driver called "High Definition Audio Device" (the generic one from Windows?), but I didn't see that as an option when I tried to update the driver using available drivers on my computer. However, still in Device Manager, when I show hidden devices, I do see "High Definition Audio Device" but it's disabled because "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)". Is that a problem? Should it be connected? More importantly, what do I do to get my Harman Kardon speakers working again with the laptop? It seems like I shouldn't need any special adapters, since they were working before just with the 3.5 mm jack.

Hi Chimney, Thanks so much for your help. I ended up going to Windows Support, prior to your Post, they did a remote fix.  Again, i thank you for your Support on my issue! I have another issue that maybe you can help me with. Yesterday, out of the blue, my PC Screen turned Solid Yellow then Red, then blue, then Green, all were solid color. Next my PC shuts down, goes in Repair mode. The PC was unable to repair itself. I have HP Windows 8 Recovery Media Disc's, which my factory installed system. I reinstalled, but Windows Activation will not or cannot read my Product Key from the BIOS. How may I recover this key? What are my options? Any input would be extremely welcome! HP Envy 23, d-044, All-In-One, Touchsmart, Beats Audio. Mod Best Regards, Phillip

A:Re: Audio playing from both internal and external speakers.

Thanks for the post @vpiPhillip,

I understand that you had to reinstall Windows 8 and are facing difficulty in activating the OS on your computer. Happy to help.

Have you tried any methods on your own?

If you have installed Windows 8 using the recovery kit that was created on your computer, recommend you to refer to this HP Article for the procedure to activate Windows 8 on your computer.

Let me know if this helped.

I have a Yoga laptop and a ThinkPad USB 3.0 Pro Dock. When my external speakers are plugged into the dock and selected as default in Windows, audio still plays through the laptop rather than the speakers. If I plug the speakers directly into the laptop, music plays through the speakers. I purchased the dock so that I wouldn't have to plug and unplug all the accessories. What do I need to do to get audio to play through the dock?

With Dell Support Assist microphone test -- earphone playback is good, on-board speaker is terribly scratchy. The sound card lists as "ATI high Definition Audio Device" and "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC."
The laptop is Dell Studio 15 (1555) running windows 7 Professional, 236GB used, 214GB free space, Intel P8700 2.53 GHz Processor, 64 bit OS, 4GB memoryThe built-in speakers used to sound good but now they are too scratchy to understand. However the headset and external speakers (both 3.5 mm jack interface) sound good and a HDMI connected projector sounds good.
I will appreciate advice.

A:On-board speakers are scratchy but external speakers & headphones sound good?

Hello. As a test, switch from the IDT audio driver to the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "IDT High Definition Audio Device".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the IDT driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]
If you get the noise while using the native driver then it is not a driver issue, which would mean there is a strong chance of speaker failure, particularly since the noise is not in headphones. If you would like to replace the speakers I can point you to the service manual.

I recently got a new HP zBook 15 with the slim docking station and am experiencing an issue related to the speaker output. If I plug my external powered Bose speakers into the line out of the docking station I get sound out of both the external Bose speakers and the internal laptop speakers at the same time. In addition the sound from the Bose speakers sounds horrible...tinny and completely lacking any bass. If I plug the Bose speakers into the headphone jack on the side of the laptop (not the docking station) then I get great sound and ONLY the Bose speakers produce sound (which is what I want). Is there a fix to get only the external speakers to play when plugged into the docking station audio out? I've uninstalled and re-installed the Conexent ISST Audio drivers twice...no change. I've tried messing with the B&O Sound Control panel, but it doesn't have any configuration for the audio ports. I've messed around in the Windows Playback devices control panel, but can't seem to find a way to shut off the internal laptop speakers. FYI, this is a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro. All Mircosoft updates installed. All HP updates installed via the HP Support Assistant. Latest laptop BIOS installed. Help! The sound output sounds HORRIBLE through the docking station. There must be a fix.

So I recently opened my CPU because it was lagging and I thought maybe a little clean up might do the trick. So I softly brushed the drivers inside the CPU to get some dust off. However, when I turned on my PC, it seems that whenever I watch videos or play games, a loud crackling sound comes out from my speakers. I don't know what is causing this.

I have tried disabling my drivers (sound and display) but to no avail. However, if I mute the volume on my sound driver, the sound disappears. Which lead me to the conclusion that it might be a conflict of sound and display.

Since the problem only occured when I opened my CPU and cleaned it, it might also be a wiring problem or something.

Can someone help me on this?

Hi jc,

Welcome to the Forum.

Never seen one of these before, Try right clicking on the speaker symbol in the notification area, select Playback Devices, You should be able to select the speaker device that you want to use.
Right click enable/disable Hide/unhide
Left Click will allow you to configure the device after selecting Configure
Properties will also give you some options

I hope this helps

I'm using a Packard Bell laptop, Windows Vista and a Realtek sound card.

I've searched a lot to find how to NOT mute my laptop speakers when I insert something in the audio-out-jack.

The next threads say it's not possible by the hardware:
They're closed, so I can't comment on them.

BUT when I dual boot to Ubuntu (using the same hardware), I can easily choose to mute the internal speakers, or the jack, or none at all. So why can't it be possible on Vista?

A:Same audio through laptop speakers and external speakers

You answered your own question... It's a software/OS issue. If Vista's Realtek options in the Control Panel don't give you the same options as in Ubuntu, you're out of luck

Hi all,

I have a Dell XPS M1330 laptop and have recently upgraded to windows 7 professional (32bit) from windows vista. Everything seems to be running smoothly except I can get no sound from the internal laptop speakers. When I plug in external speakers in via the jacks on the front, sound comes through fine, but as soon as I unplug them there is nothing. Headphones also work like this too. Under sounds in device manager, it simply says 'High Definition Audio Device', and I'm not sure if I should be downloading some other drivers?

Any advice is welcome!

I just changed from Bose Companion 3 speakers to Companion 5 because the 3 died. The 3 system used a stereo jack plugged into the headphone jack and worked fine until the Bose power supply(?) failed. The 5 uses a USB to connect.

I have an HDMI cable from my TV set top box to computer. Selecting the HDMI input shows only full screen TV display on computer. Also there is a coax cable from set top box to TV tuner card in computer. This allows TV to be displayed via Media Center in an adjustable window and I can open other windows (a browser, for instance) simultaneously. I choose which connection to use on my computer.

Previously with the Companion 3 speakers all sound came from them no matter the source. Now with the 5 speakers the HDMI TV source the sound comes from computer speakers not the Bose speakers. But if I play my music files (using Media Player) or TV (using Media Center) the sound does come from Bose speakers. Also sound from internet (YouTube, news videos, etc.) comes through Bose speakers.

Maybe someone has had this problem and knows a solution.

A:Some content from computer speakers and some from external speakers

I'm confused on where you plug in your hdmi set top box. Into your DISPLAY directly using and HDMI in port or some other HDMI in on your PC (like a graphics card?)

Also you have external computer speakers? do they plug in to your pc analog style? I know you said the Bose 5's are with usb.

I've posted this issue before on numerous support fourms, and none of them or I could figure out this issue. It's been driving me nuts.

A couple months ago I cleaned my computer (plugged everything out, cleaned the area/computer, etc.) when I put everything back together and booted up, I had no sound, but the tray icon indicated sound was indeed going through. As far as I knew nothing had been changed. I made sure everything was plugged in correctly, reinstalled the drivers, made sure I didn't click something off I shouldn't have, but still nothing. But then I plugged in headphones into the tower headphone jack, and boom I had sound. I was as surprised as everyone else. Someone suggested then, to rule out a hardware issue, that I download Ubuntu and see if the sound problem occurs there. It didn't, I had sound coming out of my speakers.

I would hate to re-install Win, as I've gone without doing so for five years. But if it came down to it, it's whatever.

I use the on-board sound from my MB, as I've learned over the years sound cards are a thing of the past. But perhaps I could reattach the old one I have? It's sadly over 10 years old however, I don't know if it would be worth trying. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Major cudos if we're able to figure this out once and for all. Good luck

My system:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
AMD Phenom II X4 965
Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3 (on-board sound)
Ripjaws 8 GB
Nvida Geforce GTX 780

I have the ordinary internal speakers (2) playing music on my laptop and they work fine, but I have a pair of (not old) wireless speakers and I though is there a way were possibly a setting could allow me to play music through all of them, it would be great to have my laptop and some speakers in another room playing music.

I've looked deep, but I thought maybe some experts know the trick.

I have a Creative Inspire T6160 speaker system, although my new motherboard only has 1x mic in and 1x stereo jack, so I was wondering if I could play sound from all the speakers simultaneously? Not surround obviously, but just the same audio stream. All the satellites are the same, I can connect them to whichever port on the back of the sub as I like.
The back looks like this FYI .

A:Playing from all speakers in 5.1 pc speakers!

Maybe if the 3 PC connections were connected together to the one output, it may work if you can find a three way adapter. I don't know if that will work, just a thought.

Might be better to just get a sound card that will support 5.1.

I've never seen a "do it yourself" motherboard with just two jacks like yours has.

Hi, hope I'm posting in the right place.

I had a set of GE 2.1 speakers working well with my Sony Vaio for about a year. Recently the sound started to go in & out, I had to move the wire around a lot and tape it or hold it in a certain spot to get them to work. Then one day they stopped working altogether. Assuming it was the speakers, I went and bought a new set from Best Buy. Took them home, plugged them in... and nothing, nothing at all. So I tried the OLD speakers in another desktop computer, and they worked perfectly.

So I assumed my headphone jack was broken and was going to go about trying to get a new piece and solder it and all that, but then I'm sitting here and just realized my headphones work perfectly.

What's wrong? How come the headphones work, but 2 pairs of external speakers don't?

Thanks so much

I have just bought Logitech z506 5.1 surround sound speakers, but when I connect them to my pc audio only plays from the front 2 and sub woofer in everything apart from when I configure them in playback devices.

Thank you in advance.

Look in the Realtek control panel for the speaker fill option, that should get all the speakers working from a stereo source.

I've had my computer for a couple of years, it's an XP, and the speakers came with it. That's all good. But about a week ago, they just stopped playing. I've tried plugging and replugging them, but they just won't play. The first time, the icon on the toolbar (the little volume control) wasn't there, and the computer said it didn't have speakers. After unplugging and replugging, the icon is back (unmuted), but the speakers still won't actually play. They have power but they won't play. Help!!

I'm running Windows Vista on my MacBook, and I'm trying to it to play audio coming in through my 360 on the speakers/headphones. It's definitely getting audio, I can record it and it sounds good, what I need is to be able to hear the audio live. The only option availiable in the playback levels screen is the "Speakers" volume. Unlike XP, I can't seem to unmute the line in so that I can play the audio. I have a little app in OS X that does this perfectly for me, but I can't seem to find a Windows equivalent, and I have to use Vista for this because OS X won't give my 360 an open NAT. Any tips/workarounds/3rd party programs that could do the trick? Thanks!

Hey everyone. I have a quick question maybe someone could please help me with. Here goes...

I have Altec Lansing speakers (2 speakers and a sub) on my Windows XP. I was watching a movie and my sound just quite on me. No popping noise, nothing. Just silence. I didn't have the volume really high, nor the bass.
The speakers still have power and turn on. I tried plugging them into my Ipod, nothing. Tried just the left speaker in my Ipod and it actually worked!
(Setup= left speaker to the right speaker, right speaker to the sub woofer, sub to the computer and wall.)
I don't think it's software because head phones work with my computer.
So, does anyone have any ideas why the speakers don't work?

P.S. Speaker serial number: CHW0529366

I have Logitech X-530 speakers, a 5.1 setup. Yesterday I wanted to use my headset to play a game, so I had to change my settings to stereo to get the sound out of both the left and right headphones. All speakers are functional, since when I test it through the control panel the 'bing' sound plays through all one-by-one. The speakers worked fully in 5.1 before I changed the settings.

So pretty much what is happening is my speakers will start to buzz when sound isnt playing. I have an Audigy 2 soundblaster but when I go to update my drivers on my sound stuff its Sigmatel High Definition Audio CODEC.

When I play music or anything that produces a sound on my computer, my speakers work great! But when there is a pause in sound playing, I get this buzzing sound that is at the same level of volume as the sound or music playing before it paused. Now this problem goes off and on but im tired of having to deal with it.

I updated my drivers on it and for a while it worked fine, then all of the sudden it came back again.

What would be great is if anybody would know how to fix this damn problem! Thanks in advance to helping me out!

Hi I have got a windows 8 64 bit laptop and just the past couple of days iv had this problem when I plug my headphones in I am still hearing sound coming from my laptop speakers and from my headphones at the same time. At first I thought this was a problem with my headphones so I decided to try different ones but I still had the same problem ( and yes the headphones are fully plugged in). This is clearly a problem with my laptop and not my headphones. I have been to the control panel and tried changing settings with my sound but NOTHING SEEMS TO BE WORKING!. I have also tried doing a system restore but that didn't help either . It would be much appreciated if anyone could help me solve this problem as it is really annoying!. Thanks in advance

A:Headphones and speakers playing at same time HELP!

What sound do you have? e.g. Realtek, Conexant, etc?

Realtek has an HD Control Panel and there is an option to mute the speakers when a headset is connected or as yours is doing not mute the speakers. I don't have anything except Realtek but I know some of the other sound hardware's have similar settings.

The Realtek is located in Control Panel/Hardware and Sound.

I'm on vista and am trying to play my 360 through my PC speakers, I have the RCA to headphone jack converter. Although following a tutorial on how to do this, it didn't work, finding out that I had to plug the RCA to headphone jack into the line in socket (blue). Still no sound from the speakers when 360 is on but when looking on the control panel it shows sound being produced via the volume indication bars. I'm not sure if this is because of the crappy stock sound card I've got (Sigmatel or something?)?

I've also ordered a pair of X-140 speakers which have headphone/aux support so will it work with those without buying a new soundcard???

Thanks for your help guys,

If you have the "jack re-tasking" option then you can set that blue
audio port to work as line in.normally, the blue or green audio
ports are for line outs.check your motherboard's manual on
how to assign your audio ports.

Any speakers with Aux in/line in with built-in amplifier will do.(A
not so complicated set-up.)

I have my headphones plugged in and the audio is playing music through the speakers and through the head phones. Originally there was a message by Dell Audio telling me "You just plugged a device into the audio jack" then a millisecond later "You just unplugged a device from the audio jack". I have my headphones plugged in but those messages keep popping up.
I deleted and reinstalled Realtek and this is still happening. I pushed the headphones into the audio jack real hard and it stayed at "You just plugged a device into the audio jack" for a little while then it went back to "You just unplugged a device from the audio jack". This is driving me crazy. I just want to listen to music through my headphones

I plug both my Razer Carcharias and speakers into the back of my computer. I have Realtek HD Audio Manager. There is no individual control for each sound device. They share the same settings and play at the same time when I play sound. My first post on here Thanks for your time.

I have a Dell Inspiron N5050 and for some reason the audio stopped working properly. When I plug in headphones it should only play through headphones but instead it plays through BOTH headphones and speakers. How can I turn off the speaker so it just plays through headphones when headphones are plugged in?

A:Headphones plugged in but playing through speakers

Some systems have an Audio Control Panel that allows the option of having the speakers on when you plug in headphones, or to not have speakers on. Check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound to see if you have this and the option. For example, I have RealTek audio and in my Realtek HD Audio Manager, I have the option for how I want the headphone jack to operate. You say you uninstalled and reinstalled the audio drivers, . Non-Vendor drivers in many cases may not work or work correctly.
install dell recommended drivers only....

My computer uses the Realtek HD Audio Manager. I have headphones plugged into the front panel and speakers plugged into the board itself on the back. I use nircmd to switch the default audio device between the speakers and headphones.

When I have the headphones set as the default device, audio plays out only the headphones. When the speakers are the default device, audio plays out both the speakers and the headphones. I can't figure out how to actually disable audio from the headphones when the speakers are the default device (short of disabling the actual device or unplugging it).

How can I properly disable the headphones when I want to use the speakers?
