Can you reuse Office 2007 product key on returned computer?

Q: Can you reuse Office 2007 product key on returned computer?

Just bought a new computer and prematurely entered my Office 2007 product code on the preinstalled trail version included. Now I plan on returning the computer (long story), does this mean I will now lose 1 of the 3 allowable installs of Office '07? I plan on deleting everything before the return, so maybe that will retain my 3 user licenses?

Preferred Solution: Can you reuse Office 2007 product key on returned computer?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Not sure about that, my guess is no, but since you bought it, call Micro$oft and ask.

Also, if you do that, would you mind posting the answer back here as well?

A received a copy of Office 2007 Professional from Microsoft when they ran the Power of One promotion a few years back. Microsoft then mailed a key and receipt, along with instructions of where to go to download office (no CD was mailed), all in a manila envelope, which I kept. Along the way, a family member threw away the entire envelope while cleaning out a drawer. I still have Office installed on my computer, but would like to reformat my hard drive. I was wondering if there was any way to retrieve the key from my computer, seeing as Office costs around $500. Thanks!

She saves it in older .xls formats but no matter what, I am being asked for the 25 character Product Key to configure-setup MSOffice 2007 on my computer. Without that my grace period will end and I will no longer be able to open these attachments. She is also sending me word documents and there is no product key and configuration issue with these. Is there some way around the excel configuration/setup screen so I can continue working in XP with her attachments or has microsoft figured out a way to make be buy their newer software?

A:Product Key Requested for MS Office 2007

<<Is there some way around the excel configuration/setup screen so I can continue working in XP with her attachments or has microsoft figured out a way to make be buy their newer software?>>

No...yes.

Microsoft is in the business of selling licenses for use of their products, this is not news. OTOH, Microsoft does not compel any user to use their products, just as any other vendor does not do so.

A visit to the MS Office website may provide you with more alternatives/info.

Probably not. The product number won't match. This is one of the first things "Genuine Microsoft" checks.

The bad sectors should have been re-written. You might try a better recovery program like ZAR.

You could have found it from the original installation on the hard drive. But since you say the hard drive has been formatted I don't know of any way to retrieve it. If it was registered with Microsoft you 'could' try and contact them. I'm not sure how successful you would be. But the key code is not on the install disk.

Hi,

I ran into a weird situation where I was putting together a pc from spare parts for a friend. He bought a hard drive and a copy of windows (win 7 home premium 64). As it turned out the cpu I was using could not do 64bit, so I installed the win 7 home premium 32 bit trial, as I understood I could use the product key from the copy he purchased.

Now he is not happy with the performance of this computer and wants to purchase newer components to make a faster system - including CPU and 8 gb ram, so the 64 bit version would be more appropriate. I checked and the 32 bit windows had not yet activated. I used SLMGR to remove the product key from the registry and uninstall it. I think this puts it back into trial mode, if I'm not mistaken.

What I need to know is that, from Microsoft's point of view, has this key been used up and tied to this 32bit install, or can I still use the key from the 64bit product he bought on a 64bit install. If he's stuck tied to this 32 bit install I will tell him not to buy more than 4gb of ram.

Thanks in advance for any help.

A:entered product key, but not yet activated, can I reuse on diff hardw?

The Key is valid for either 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.
The only problems arise if the License is an OEM one, rather than Retail, and the system was activated.
Upgrading CPU and RAM will not affect activation status anyhow, even if the system had been activated.
It's only the motherboard that is critical - and then only in the case of an (activated) OEM License.

Feel free to swap anything you like

I use mail merge only once a year, for holiday envelopes. So I'm unfamiliar with most of the options. My recipients are stored in Excel. I have saved a (single envelope) .docx with my return address and «FirstName» «LastName» «Address», etc. for recipient. But I don't know how to use it. Every year I have to start from scratch. Thankfully, I've made a checklist so that I don't have to learn everything anew each December.

It just makes sense to use the saved layout instead of redoing the whole process each time.

Where & how in the "Start Mail Merge/Envelopes/Select Recipients . . ." sequence do I tell it to use the saved layout (template)? Is a .docx the correct file type?

When I go to the Activation wizard to enter the new product key, I get the following error:

"The key is incorrect. Verify that you have the correct key and then retype it."

The key is entered correctly.

Do I need actual media to load this upgrade? If so, what do I need?

I even installed Office 2000, then tried to install 2007 using media I had from another installation. I entered the new product key, but got the same error.

Any ideas?

Hi NoPlanB.I got 3 installs with it. One of my computers has died and I want to install it on a new computer. If I recall this is allowed by MicrosoftI take it you must be using the "Home and Student" version? It is the only version of office 07 that allows that many installs and 3 is the legal limit. You can install and use it a 4th time (as it has no way of knowing that) and use it up to 50 times before you are nagged for activation and it goes into reduced functionality mode. If afterwards you are denied another license key via the activation wizard (wizard dies) you can bring the wizard back to life by deleting the opa12.dat file, described in this article, or contact MS by phone. For earlier versions of Office products, MSFT published a number of KB articles that describe the issue of having more than 1 version of Office in OS, andthey did list some significant potential problems.

Some of the articles were KB 292491, 218081, 828956 and 290576.

In any case, you would really have to uninstall 2007 before installing 2003.

A:Microsoft Office 2003 and 2007 on the same computer

It should be okay, but you'll have to be very careful how you do the installation:

1.  Watch every step, do NOT accept the defaults all the time.

2.  Install 2003 first, if you've not done it already.

3. The first thing you're asked, is WHERE to install.  Create a new folder name, instead.  So at the end of the path it gives you, instead of accepting 'Microsoft Office', instead type something like 'MSO2003' or whatever you'll easily remember.  MS always installs multiple nested directories with the same names, so if you're gonna use two versions, you want to change the ending folder name of at least, one of them.  (I have, for example, MS Office 2002 and 2003 on the same machine, so I renamed one of the directories MSO02, for that reason.)

4.  After installation, shut down, go walk for a few minutes and then turn the machine on again (soft reboot doesn't work well with Office).

5.  Do something else on your machine for awhile, don't just do the next thing as the 2007 installation.  Give Windows time to 'populate' all its references with recognition of the new installation.

6.  So maybe after an hour or so, you can now install 2007.  It will notice that you have 2003 installed, and offer to replace it.  Say no to that.

7.  It too will present you with a default directory which is the same as the default you saw in #3, and again you want to specify a uni... Read more
