Dial Up Not Remembering Password

Q: Dial Up Not Remembering Password

Using dial up I can't get the password to be remembered. It has to be typed in every time and the remember password box is greyed out.

Is there a setting somewhere I can change or is it something more sinister?

Here's the HJT log if it's any help.....

Preferred Solution: Dial Up Not Remembering Password

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

ive gone through the options and tools and such for firefox and ive got the 'remember passwords for sites' box checked under security but to no avail...

i have the history shut off (as i did in my old versions) so im wondering if they have made it mandatory to keep the history (new method of tracking cookies?) if so that really blows...

Even tho I checked the "Remember Password" box for both users, Outlook continually asks me to hand-enter the password every time I open it - from either account. I have Outlook set to automatically send/receive upon opening. Any advice on how I can get Outlook to remember the password for each user and stop asking for it every time I open Outlook?

I have an account on a website that is quite important; it is a https site. It remembers my username and password, so I went to Internet options and deleted the history, passwords, cookies etc. I also edited the options to "don't remember passwords or data entered into forms etc" but the problem still persists. The people who manage that site told me it's not a problem of which they are aware either.

I would try a different web browser but neither chrome nor firefox seem to support all the functions of this site. If I am missing something obvious or if anyone has anything else worth trying please do let me know......thank you.

I know this same problem has been posted a number of times, but I can't find a situation similar to mine.

When I check the "remember password" box in Outlook Express V6, the password isn't retained. I read the Microsoft article about how to correct this, but here's the problem. Microsoft says to go to the registry and locate the key named; HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider, right-click on the DEFAULT subkey and delete it. My problem is that the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider doesn't exist in my registry. Any ideas? Running Windows ME.

Hello all,

I help out part-time at my local library. One of our research stations (Win2k), just can't seem to remember the login/password info for a site we frequently access. We make sure the "save password" box is checked when logging in. After IE is closed and restarted, when a patron tries to log in, the username/password fields are blank, even though we saved it previously.

We have that info saved on our other research stations and the info never gets lost. It's just this one problem system. All the systems are running Win2K and have latest IE version and updates. All the settings are near identical.

The site in question is www.corptech.com. It is the login part to their secure site. It is a research database in which we allow patrons to access. That is why we keep all the login/password info saved, so patrons can go directly into the site. The problem system can never remember this info, so we always have to retype the info to login, which is a hassle.

I have double-checked the settings (autocomplete, privacy settings etc.), run adware/spyware/virus scans and uninstall/reinstalled IE. I'm still having this password problem. I downloaded Firefox and the password manager remembers the info successfully everytime. But not IE on this one system. So it seems to me something is wrong with IE. I have even tried clearing all the cache, cookies, temp files, then reattempting to login and save the info. It still isn't remembering.

I'm a new Skype user (Skype Portable) and the only way I can get Skype to remember my password is to not sign out but use the Quit Skype option when right-clicking the taskbar entry. I found this by doing a global search.

Doing this leaves me signed in to Skype (Task Manager shows the two Skype entries), so I'm wondering if this could be a problem, security wise.

Also, if anyone does know of a way to get Skype to actually remember the password, maybe adding a line to an ini file (appinfo.ini ?) I'd sure like to know.

Thanks for any help.

On Saturday I was at my uncle's and we installed the latest windows update. On Sunday he rang me to ask why he couldn't log on to the internet. By a process of elimination we found his password in dial up settings had changed (not the password itself, but what was saved in the password box)

This morning the same thing had happened to me.

Is this strange? Whereas we both had 8 character passwords (both ISP supplied from different ISPs) They were both showing 12 characters........

It doesnt worry me, but I am curious.........

I have a couple questions:

I have a dial-up ISP. In order to connect to the internet, not only must I dial the number but enter my password. I deliberately set it this way. I do not store passwords on my computer.

If a dialer should get in my system, and one has a time or two, is it possible for it to dial out if I am not connected to my ISP?

If I am connected to the internet, is it possible for it to dial out, and if so how?

Orange Blossom

A:Dial-up Using Password And Dialers

If you are not connected to the internet, a dailer cannot dial out; once a connection is established (whether or not you use a password to do so is not important, though you are wise to do so) the dialer will use that connexion to communicate.
Now, aren't you glad you have a firewall?

1) Open the Network Connection folder ("Start > Run" type ncpa.cpl and click OK), right click the dialup connection and select Properties, then the Options tab. Tick the box for "Prompt for name and password, certificates, etc". Next time you dial, the dialog box that opens will let you save the Username/Password for All Users.

2) In Internet Explorer's menus, go to "Tools > Internet Options" and select the Connections tab. If you have more than one connection, set Orange as the Default. Then select the radio button for "Always dial my default connection".

That works fine but I cannot save the new password. Previously I did not have to enter a password, it was saved......put the number of dots that come up is too many for this OR the previous password.
How did my saved password change? How do I save this one?
I am blonde, but I have tried everything. Deleting the password entirely, trying from different control panels, etc etc but always it will come back with the "too many dots" password if I asked it to save my password from the previous dial-up.

I know I've posted on this before, but I have the ongoing problem that when connecting to the Internet via dial-up networking, I'm asked if I would like my password to be remembered and to be connected automatically, both of which boxes I check.
Until I restart the computer, automatic connection works each time, but on rebooting it doesn't.
A suggestion was to create a Network client in Control Panel, but this would entail setting up a password to get into Windows each time, which I don't really want to do.

I'm running Internet Explorer 5, and just wonder if there's something reasonably straightforward that I can do to make my automatic connection work

Hi vicbrown...

Try this

Go into Start/Search/For Files or Folders. Then enter .pwl for file search
Right click all .pwl files and pick "rename"
change all the .pwl extentions to .old
EX:
change: filename.pwl
to: filename.old

This will allow you re-enter and save all passwords.

NOTE: Using this method removes all saved passwords. ALL passwords will have to be re-entered. To reverse this you can change files renamed .old back to .pwl

Good luck

Using windowsxp and ie6. Newish computer that I haven't fiddled with much!

A few weeks ago, the dial up box started remembering my dial up password incorrectly. I noticed there were too many digits saved in the box ( the large round dots). If I delete and enter password - fine it will dial up and logon to the ISP. However, if I try to save the password it always puts in too many digits. To experiment I just tried saving one digit, the letter a. It still saved about 8 digits. I use several ISP's and they all do the same thing. Entering a new ISP details has same result. Any ideas?

Hi,

They're finally sending me a new replacement laptop (Take 2!), so I'm finally sending back the replacement laptop they sent me (since it was defective -- see my other thread for details), but I need to quickly prep it before I send it back.

I changed the computer name, and I looked up how to change the registry so I can remove my "Registered to" name. I'm also going to uninstall AVG A/V Free and ZA Free 6.5.737 since they both have "Registered to" names listed as well. I didn't really put anything else (files, etc.) on the computer.

However, I did set up my dial-up with my username/password on it, so I need to completely remove that. But I can't find anything on how to do that. Do I just right-click on the dial-up listing in Network Connections and choose "delete"? Or is there something else I need to do in the registry instead or in addition to that? Or something else entirely? (Something to do with .pwl files? I saw mention of that somewhere, but not sure if that's for XP Pro or what it is, etc.)

Please note: This machine is XP Pro SP2.

I need to get this sent back, so any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Hello,Ok, I see some infections here that really need to go. But most important thing here is.. You don't have an antivirus or firewall running and your windows isn't up to date either. You don't have even ServicePack1 installed! Remember that your system is extremely vulnerable without the necessary security patches/updates, so malware can get installed automatically while surfing without any problems. Please visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and update to Service Pack 1. When your system is clean afterwards, then update to SP2, because updating to SP2 CAN cause problems as long as you are infected.I suggest to install Kaspersky.Download it from here: http://www.kaspersky.com/trials?chapter=146481750This is a trial version for 30 days. I'm looking for a software program/script (?) to automatically dial/redial dial up 3+ differrent dial-up network connections.

Overview: My ISP has 3 dial up numbers and I would like to find a program/script that would automatically dial-up an Internet connection I have for my ISP and keep hanging up & redialing my ISP until it reaches a preset speed (for example, at least 41K-). Then (if it can't make connection on that line at a predetermined speed I selected, it would hang-up and automatically dial the next of the 3 ISP #'s I have for the same ISP (or a different ISP) and keep doing that with all 3 phone numbers (one after the other of course).

I would want it to do that over and over, automatically, until it finally reached a connection speed I preset (for example 43K). That way when I wake up, I could start the program and let it run for an hour (or however long it takes) while I get ready, until it was able to connect at target speed I preselected, which could take a long while on my voice grade line.

The phone lines are lousy around here, so I DESPERATELY need something like this. Does anyone know of any software program or any way to jimmy-rig something, fairly easily, to do that? (the point of all this is to get as good of a dial up speed as I can get where I live on my voice grade phone lines here, because there is NO Cable/DSL where I live!

A:Need Software/Script or? to Automatically dial & redial, dial-up Network Connections

southquail,
Dial up networks are a strange breed. But connection speeds aren't what you're looking for. In fact, you want to know what bandwidth you have. I've seen 28k connection with a good solid bandwidth. Check your numbers and find the one that gives you the best return. I don't know of any automated scripts like that, but some programmers here might be able to help. Keep in mind, that when you hit a jump station your connection drops, and your overall connection speed is decided by the weakest link between you and your telephone number you're calling. So changing numbers changes the direction of your signal. I hope a programmer jumps in and has an automated solution for you.

Then (if it can't make connection on that line at a predetermined speed I selected, it would hang-up and automatically dial the next of the 3 ISP #'s I have for the same ISP (or a different ISP) and keep doing that with all 3 phone numbers (one after the other of course).

hi there,

i connect to the internet via dial up. No, not to AOL, just an ISP you haven't heard of. Everything works fine, just that few days ago, when i started dialing, it stopped making any sounds where you can hear the number being dialled and when it connects.

Is there a way to switch the sound back on, I checked my Volume control, Line-In and they aren't on Mute. So whats the problem?? Bear in mind, everything works! just no sound like it used to do.

thanks

David

A:I can't hear my dial up modem dial tone

Go into dialup networking and click on the connection and see if the option is there.

Guys,

This is something very strange, and if this is a big problem to fix, I am just going to have to reformat the hard drive and start from scratch.

I have a Gateway PC with I.E 6 with Windows 98 as my OS. I also have a DSL Internet Connection and this problem just started today.

I can play media content just fine (or, I should say....so far with Windows Media Player 7) However, when I go to this one particular website:

www.tpirtv.com which is a website devoted to the TV Gameshow, the Price is Right, I can not play any of the videos, even though I could play them fine last week. What happens is, shortly after Windows Media Player opens, my Internet-Dial Up connection appears even though I have no dial-up connection. (I run DSL) The user name is blank, the screen name is blank and it says that I am off-line (like I am using dial-up, which I am not.)

Second issue, if I open OE 6 to read my mail, the dial-up connection wizard also opens! What's going on??!!!

Good Evening,

I have working (according to Windows XP trouble shooter) Realtec AC'97 Audio for Via sound card except that nothing comes out of the speakers or headset. I have run all the troubleshooting panes, downloaded all the latest drivers from Realtec, reinstalled SndVol32.exe. The only sound that will play is the dial tone and connection sounds when I use a dial-up server. That plays well but you can't dance to it.

Anyone have suggestions on what else I can check and how?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

DSL CONNECTIONS BEATS DIAL-UP INTERNET CONNECTIONS ( INCLUDING THE 'NEW' DIAL-UP ACCELERATED ONES) HANDS DOWN. NO CONTEST REALLY.
I have been thinking of cutting my budget and dropping a DSL internet connection and going with one of those 'new' dial-up accelerated internet connections, many times advertised as 5,6,7 times faster than regular dial-up.

does anyone have experienced with a dial-up accelerated internet connection, especially after having a DSL connection?

A:DIAL-UP vs DIAL-UP ACCELERATOR vs DSL CONNECTIONS

Dial-up "accellerators" simply compress all images and cache popular websites to improve your experience of dial-up, at the cost (where images are concerned) of quality.

They will not noticeably improve your download speeds.

At the end of the day, dial-up is dial-up, and you have to accept the limitations in speed. The "accellerator" services are not a magic bullet.

Hey, My notebook has a dial-up problem. Whenever I try to dial-up using any modem, it stops at "Modems Connecting". I thought it was a driver problem until I tried another modem that had always worked.

I did a bit of goggling and found others have had the problem, but I did not find a solution.

Please help!

A:Need Help. Vista Dial-up stuck, Can not dial-up

Problem solved. It seems operator assisted dialing was on. I also turned off call back.

If the problem returns i'll post an update.

Hopes this helps someone out there!

I was connected to the internet via my dial-up server when suddenly it was disconnected.  When I tried to reconnect, my computer displays the dialing mode & I can hear the dial tone but the dial tone isn't as loud as it had been in the past.  Then at that point I was always able to hear the tone as the number was being dialed in the past when it was working properly, but now it just doesn't dial.  Can anyone there in computerland help me?  Thanks, Gary

A:Why won't my computer dial my dial-up internet ser...

I don't know for sure where the problem is but I guess I need to know a little more information because it could be 2 ways here..... One are you talking about your COMPUTER connecting to a ISP over Dial-Up ?Or from your Post it almost sounds like your computer is connected VIA Cat5 or Some other type of Network cable (Running a Client software) that then tells a Internet Network Server to Dial out to your ISP. IF this is how your connected to the Internet There are far to many problems that could be answered over a Computer Hardware Forum.  IF the issue is Just a Computer over Dial Up and your modem isn't Dialing anymore just taking the Modem off Hook but then it don't dial. I would contact your ISP and ask them to help Troubleshoot your problem. If the issue is over a Dial Up Server, You would need to make sure that your Workstation and Server are able to talk back and forth, make sure your Server is running up to par. Could be that the Server needs to be Rebooted. Also could be that From the Workstation to the Sever the right Password/ User combo is not being used that allows the user on the Workstation to access the Internet. I would Trace your failed connection and set up a full logInformation from a trace is recorded in the Miscellaneous Events view of the log. In the Trace Connections Log Options field, you can set the level of detail to record. For maximum information, choose Full Trace Information. Sorry without more information I can't really ... I have Windows XP, access the internet via an ISP, 56k modem. Every 4-5 hours or so, if I have not rebooted manually, I will get disconnected from the Internet. No big deal. But then, I have more than one window opening that are all attempting to reconnect/re-dial to get me back online-all at the same time. I have to cancel this, end that...each and every time. Seems just different looking windows for the same thing. One says Dial Up Connection, another Network Connections, etc. Then I get phonebook cannot be opened, as it was already dialed. I have no idea how this all started, is just annoying more than anything, as I have to deal with all these things opening, instead of the single dial up window that opens when I first go online, or if I am getting online manually, not the computer getting it done for me.
How do I trouble shoot this problem and find out what is doing this and then stop it, so just one thing dials back up for me after a disconnect?? Will be great to not deal with this any longer. Your help is very appreciated, Thanx! parrotplay

A:Re-dial Problems After Disconnects From Dial-up

hello parrotplay, I not sure this will work ,but perhaps you could try uninstalling and reinstalling your isp software. Perhaps somewhere during the install you'll be able to clean up all those option glitches.

Whenever I would go to a site and type in my user name and a new pin, xp would prompt me to remember the pin, so that if I clicked and my user name came up, my pin would automatically be entered.

Now, when I go to Fidelity Investments, I click, but no user name comes up. When I manually enter, no reminder to save the pin comes up either.

When I go to other sites and click, my user name and pin come up.

I don't know if it is a Fidelity site thing, or if I need to do something else.

I did check "autocomplete" in the "content" tab of tools in ie6. and everything is checked.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Try this handy utility! It's auto complete feature doesn't let you down like IE6 does!

i accidently pushed dont remember the password on this site ... but i want to make it so that it is saved .. how can i make firefox remember a password ona site without changing the other site settings?

A:re-remembering

Go to Tools > Options > Privacy > Passwords tab > View Saved Passwords button > Passwords Never Saved tab, and remove the site from the list. Then go to the site and when the options box appears, save the password for this site.

You might need to tick the Remember Passwords box under the Passwords tab for this feature to work.
