When selecting a file, folders aren't showing left of Windows Explorer

Q: When selecting a file, folders aren't showing left of Windows Explorer

Hey there! (Noob to the forums, wasn't sure where to post to begin with. Sorry if it's the wrong subject thread!)

Basically... when I go to "Choose file" anywhere online, whether it be a file or uploading a picture; my folders and C: disk.. pretty much everything on the left side of the Windows Explorer doesn't show up.

I ran a virus scan not just three days ago? Nothing showed up. Re-running another one... and nothing has yet to show up.

The problem is in the purple rectangle in the attachment. (Did the same exact thing when I was uploading this picture).

Preferred Solution: When selecting a file, folders aren't showing left of Windows Explorer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: When selecting a file, folders aren't showing left of Windows Explorer

From where did you download and install that theme you're running? It looks like a theme has corrupted the display window options.

Here is my process. I scan documents onto my pc and save them to a file on my network drive. Then, I need to email these pdfs to other employees. I used to open Outlook, create a new email then click on "attach file". I would then get a drop down menu of the recent files I've worked with. There were some files on this recent list that I wanted to remove. I couldn't figure out how to remove only the select one or two files, so I cleared the history. Now, the files I view are not being saved to this drop down menu. I have to climb through 4 levels of files to get to the one document I need. How can I get File Explorer (not Windows Explorer) to start saving my recent activity again?

A:File Explorer not showing recent folders

You may need to turn Recent Items on.

This one is getting really annoying. I have noticed that sometimes when using Windows Explorer, if I rename a folder, the right hand pane shows the correct (new) folder name, but the left hand pane still displays the old folder name.

As a matter of fact, even if I right click on the folder name on the left hand pane, and choose "Rename", and then rename it there, when I hit Enter to save the name change, the folder name on the left (that was just highlighted and changed) will revert back to the original name....but the name in the right hand pane will show the change.

For some reason, it just doesn't seem to want to update the view in the left hand pane. And then, to top it off, after some undetermined amount of time, the left hand pane will "refresh" to show the new folder name, but it will STILL show the old folder in the list as well. If I right-click the parent folder and choose "Open in New Window", the view is correct, but the original window still shows the old folder names.

This may only happen after my Explorer windows (I usually have 4 or 5 up) have been open for a long time, as I tried to reproduce with new windows and the behavior is normal (left hand pane updates view immediately).

I've reported it already, but just curious if anyone else has experienced this odd behavior.

A:Windows Explorer left-pane not showing changes to folder names

Hi CorrsFan

I think this is just a part of it being a Beta still. I have tried to delete the HomeGroup section, and while it goes for awhile as soon as it refreshes it's back. Just like some sections of the Registry is locked out and some permissions can't be changed, these things will all be sorted out by RC1. Renaming any system item is locked down in the registry and Left (Navigation) Pane items seem to be a part of this lockout.

Make sure to send MS Feedback on this so they know what works and doesn't.

This issue has been buggin' me and I can't get an answer for it. It seems that there are two people in our office that do not get folders listed on the left side of the window of their explorer. If you double click on My Computer you only get drives on one list. To view the folder arrangement, you must press the folders button above or go to View > Explorer bar > and select Folders. Once you close it out and re-open, it is gone again. It doesn't matter if you set it up to view and then select Like current folder under the Folder options. I've tried finding and answer at Microsoft with little success. Can you help. I have Windows 2000.

I have a problem where the left pane of the windows explorer bar is greyed out and it shows nothing. The right pane however works fine.

I have seen the article in relation to how to fix this problem on a Windows 95 and 98 machine but not a Windows 2000 machine as the registry key mentioned does not exist in Win2k.

Any idea anyone ?

I was testing my FTP server tonight and when I connect to the home directory there's two folders that show up (RECYCLER and System Volume Information) in the home directory that shouldn't be there. When I go into my home directory in Windows Explorer these folders don't show up there, even if I choose to show the hidden files. If I can't get these folders to show up in Windows Explorer I can't exclude them from showing up in my FTP Server software. Is it possible that they show up in my FTP client because I'm connecting to the same machine the server is on? That's all I can come up with. What's going on here and how do I fix it?

Example I am looking at a full window of folders with five coloumns of folders. If I double click on a folder in any coloumn except the far left coloumn, all of the coloumns move to the left by one coloumn space. Reseting file and view settings does not
fix the problem. I have seen this on Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Enterprise. It does not matter if it is on a domain or not or if a group policy is setting the home page.
This means I have to click twice as many times to open a folder in list view and that is the view I really want to use. Clicking twice as many times is also not good for carpel tunnel. This happens on my home and work computers and I have seen it on other
Windows 7 computers. Neither does the reg hack for MIUs or something similiar to that.

A:Windows 7 Explorer in list view moves coloumns of folders to left when you double click folder to open it

That’s a by design feature, but you can apply view settings to all folders of the same type. Here are
the detailed steps:
1. Open a folder and make changes as you like.
2. Press Alt to display the menu bar. Click Tools -> Folder options.
3. Click View tab.
4. Press the "Apply to folders" button.
5. Click Apply and click OK.
Note: The "Apply to folders" settings apply the current view setting to all folders that are optimized for the
same content as the folder you have open. This setting will not apply to the folders which is not the same type.

Hope that helps.

I'm having a very bizarre issue on a laptop running Windows 7. Windows explorer is showing all items as the wrong size, it's as if the math is off by a few 0s. For example an outlook file is showing up a 548 GB which clearly isn't possible. I looked up the
file on another computer and it was actually 5.48 GB. Every file on the computer shows up that way. It also doesn't matter if I'm looking at a file on the local drive or on a mapped drive, it still shows the incorrect value. I've never run into something like
this before and haven't had much luck finding anything on Google either. Has anyone seen something like this before or have an idea for how to change the math behind explorer? If that is even what needs to be changed.

As an extra note, kind of funny but even the transfer rate is buggered up, the laptop is transferring files from a mapped drive at a miraculous 522 MB/s, sure do wish my computer could move that fast.

I have just built a new computer, using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, however, I've noticed when I open Windows explorer, 3 out of 4 times it will continuously search for drives when opening up explorer and not show any drives that are installed. I've tried reformatting, using different hard drives, but the problem persists no matter what I do. I've reinstalled Windows 7 with only a single drive plugged in, tried different SATA ports, but this problem keeps coming back. The only thing I can think of is that the Windows 7 install disk is corrupted and not installing properly.

I've also noticed that once it starts searching like this, the icons wont display in any folder, although the file names will. Likewise, when trying to sort files by date, type, etc, they will not sort.

When this happens, I can easily type in C:\ to get to the drive without problem to access the drive but above problems with icons not showing, sorting, etc still is a problem.

Has anyone had this problem? Know of a way to fix this? I'm not looking forward to having to reformat again as I don't have the time to sit through and reinstall everything again after.

1-Connected an external mouse and it also doesn't work with left click.
2-I tried a restore point from last week to see if that solved the problem. Still the same.

My computer just started doing this recently. I basically go into my drive folder, or any folder with an avi, it will be fine. I have been through 3 of the threads here trying to figure this issue out and I'm stumped still.

I have gone into the registry and deleted the PropertyHandler folder for avi.

I click on the "+" beside the icon of a drive or folder near the bottom of the left pane of my Windows 7 Explorer. If the list of sub folders that opens is longer than the distance to the bottom of the pane, the lower icons become hidden. Those subfolders extend "below" the pane -- out of view. Hi Guys,

I have encountered this problem (in thread line) for the past 3-5 days and I have come no closer to any solution during that period of time.

Basically, as soon as I left click or right click on a file in Windows Explorer it will crash. My Windows icon in the bottom left has also stopped working and I cannot ask Cortana anything (not that I did anyway...).

None of the advanced boot options work either (system restore, clean install etc...).

Apologies if that is somewhat vague, and thanks in advance for any assistance.

A:File Explorer crash when selecting files

Hi, I think you need to try to repair Windows.

Let's start by opening an admin command prompt
Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (admin)

chkdsk C: /F
and your PC shold reboot and run the command.
Check it reports everything is ok or fixed.

If so (else post back):

Open an admin command prompt
Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (admin)
SFC /Scannow
and post back the results.
(This will attempt to refresh any corrupt system files).

These are quite routine, safe procedures.

I'm having a very strange issue after I did a boot time virus scan in Avast to remove a virus. Avast seems to have removed the virus just fine, however I can't get Windows to show directories or files any more.

If I open Windows Explorer and go to C:\Users it says the folder is empty. However if I right click and select properties, it calculates the folder as 10.8 GB. I can still log in fine and run software etc. This problem isn't just in the C:\Users folder. My library directories show empty and I was immediately afraid I lost all of my pictures because searching for *.jpg on my system yields no results. However, I remembered the exact path to one of the file names and sure enough it opened the picture. For example when I enter the exact address in Windows Explorer: C:\Users\MyUserName\Pictures\2011\MyPic.jpg it opens. But if I list C:\Users\MyUserName\Pictures\2011 it says "folder is empty".
One more thing to mention is that I tried browsing files through the command prompt. Whenever I try to do a directory listing with the dir command I get the error: Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 2AEE-FDC8. File not found. However, I can still cd into existing directories that I know exist. I just can't list the directories or files.
Unfortunately I upgraded to Windows 7 SP1 right after this happened because I thought it might fix the problem. Now I can't do a system restore to the point where my computer wasn't having this problem. I ... Read more

A:Windows says folders are empty when they aren't

Unfortunately, although quite a few programs can remove various malware, they can not repair the damage such malware caused.

Simple spyware can usually be completely removed, and the system is not damaged. Other stuff like Trojans, more complex spyware, rootkits, and similar stuff, cause damage to the system. This damage remains even after removing what caused it.

In your particular situation I would run a FULL scan with the free version of this;

and see what it says.

Then I would run a full scan with this;

SUPERAntiSpyware.com | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!

and see what it says.

If both come up clean, then you can try to repair whatever damage the malware did to your system, although this is rarely successful, as it is difficult...impossible to find out what damage it did.

Once you have removed all the malware, it is usually best to reinstall a clean system. You should backup what you need AFTER scanning it for malware.

Scan ALL partitions and drives!

First, It's my honor to be with you in this forum. This is my first thread !

I'm really tired and angry with a very annoying error of windows explorer.
windows explorer is getting crashed while opening any folders accidentally, especially folders with large number of files and images. first it appears as windows explorer is unable to load files thumbnails (any kind of files) and appears as white or blank icons regardless the type of file. then when opening my computer in another window , it couldn't load even contents of drivers and hangs as "searching for items".
all this happens suddenly after weeks of normal windows usage. I resolve it by backing up system using Acronis image. but the problem persists. I tried virus scan with no success using AVG. I made thorough scan for C with no result too.
Note that this problem I found with Windows 7 and it forced me to upgrade to Windows 8 then I'm experiencing the same problem now. I don't Understand why.

Note: I think there's no hardware (HDD) error cause I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 alongside Windows and it's browsing files perfectly.

Please help quickly

A:Windows Explorer stops showing files or no file thumbnail

Try doing a CHKDSK on the drive that has Windows on it, also when was the last time you optimised the drive? Scan it and see if it finds any problems. It's best to do it from an install disk and go into Command Prompt and run CHKDSK from there, that way you can see the results as it works on the drive.

A:Windows explorer crash while opening folders/file

It may be related to some Explorer extension that was installed and crashing on network drives? Try disabling installed programs "shell integration" as much as you can to test.

Also, you probably want to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1, as it might fix something related to this crash, in addition to some other minor bugfixes.

Ok, this question has been asked around many corners of the Internet and these forums and I haven't found a "real" answer so I'm asking it again and hopefully seeking a final resolution to the problem.

When "Protected Mode" is turned On, users are unable to view some folders in the file upload dialog that they can normally view (e.g. under Documents, Pictures, etc.).When viewing the same folders in Explorer running as the same user as the Internet Explorer instance, the missing folders are viewable.Launching Internet Explorer "as an administrator" allows the user to view the missing folders (but this is not recommended due to security concerns).
So far, the workaround that I found was to either run some crazy tool from BleepingComputer called Unhide that resets everything on your system -- this is the sledge hammer-to-thumbtack approach.  Another one was to go into Organize > Folder and
search options > View and uncheck the hide options and select the show radio option.  The last one was to search for the folder in the file upload dialog, right-click the folder, and uncheck Hidden.
None of these, IMHO, are valid solutions to the real problem which is that something is special about this folder that is causing IE in Protected Mode to treat the file as Hidden.
The last "workaround" seems to indicate that the "hidden" file attribute is set for the file, but this doesn't app... Read more

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

Hi everyone:

How can I open explorer to a particular left pane file? I want to open to: Libraries, Documents, My documents (with the files showing underneath my doucments). I have been able to open to: user, my documents, but I would rather open to the libraries file structure - it looks cleaner.

Thanks, in advance.

Hello Everyone,

I had a little problem come up a few days ago, and haven't been able to sort it out by myself, so I thought I'd ask here.

I have "Enable Web Content in Folders" checked under "Folder Options" and have never had a problem until now. When I go to any folder containing a video or audio file, and select any file of those types, Windows Explorer hangs and I have to Ctrl Alt Delete to shut down Explorer.

When I select any other type of file, Explorer behaves just fine. And when I disable Web Content in Folders, I also have no problems. If I access a video or audio file through an application rather than via Explorer, it also causes no problems. I am really used to having Web Content in Folders, so I would like to fix this.

I've restored the registry to the Last Known Good version, and also done an Emergency Repair using my ERD, but still have the problem. I've done all of the Windows Updates and am current on my Anti Virus and Anti Spyware apps.

I'm running Windows 2000 Pro and use McAfee VirusScan, Spybot S&D, Adaware and Microsoft Anti Spyware Beta. The system is reportedly clean, and CheckDisk says everything is fine. Disk Management also says my drives (2 physical drives) are healthy.

Any ideas what might be causing this and how I can fix it? I wanted to try this before I restore my system from a Ghost image, as a last resort.

TIA for your help!

Best Wishes,

I'm having an odd problem with my computer. When I attempt to right-click on any movie file(.avi, .mov, .wmv, etc) The screen goes black for 1/2 second or so , then redraws the screen before the menu comes up.
I'm running an Athlon 64X2 4200+ with 1gb ram and a Geforce 6600 Gt, . I've had the same setup for awhile, but this problem is recent. I've tried upgrading the drivers, but doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions?
Also, possibly related, WMV files already on my computer only play for about 2 seconds before the video stops. Pausing and playing again don't help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you plug in the auxiliary power to Geforce 6600GT ?

Have you updated the DirectX ?

Have you tried to re-seat the Geforce 6600GT?

So, this is something I've absolutely never come across, and a relatively new problem as of this month. It will not occur on a fresh restart, only after the system has been running for a few days. I can't even describe it well enough for a Google search to give me a proper result.

For example 1: I take an SD card out of my camera and into my computer. I open up the source and destination folders and drag-move the files from the SD card to the computer. The system runs the move dialogue, may take a minute, depending on size, the source file is deleted, the destination file shows up in the folder all fine and dandy, successful move.

If I try to open the moved picture, error, (can't recall the error, but basically the file can't be read). I refresh the folder, file is gone. I go back to the source, file is also gone. I run recovery software on the destination, the file was never, ever there, to begin with. It's like it pretended to copy the file, but didn't actually write any information to the disk.

Example 2:
I'm in Firefox. I see an image I want to save to my computer. Save As, it downloads, it shows up in the downloaded tab. I browse to the folder in Windows Explorer, file isn't there. I try to save the image, again, Firefox prompts me that the file already exists. Using Firefox's Save As dialogue, I attempt to open the file. Gives me the same error, (something like File cannot be read).

I've attempted to shut down/restart Comodo Firewall and Bitdefender A... Read more

It's not supported, but you can drag shortcuts to the Favorites area and arrange them in the order you like.

This is something that's been bothering me since I upgraded this Dell XPS8700 to windows 10 some two weeks or more ago.

The left pane in File Explorer seems to duplicate my drive letters and info other than what's under the entry "This PC".

If I look down the list, starting just below the Libraries folder, the drive letters are repeated but not all of them.

Like I have under This PC : C: , DVDRW D:, E:, F: , a card reader, H,L,K, external drives L:, another card reader letter M:, a second external drive N:, followed by some NAS folders I have mapped, V, W, X. and Y.

Down past the Libraries folder are again: H, L, N, M, K, and I, then Network etc, Homegroup etc.

Hard to describe, I could do a screen shot and post it if that would help see it.

How and why are all these drive letters getting into this tree twice? Anyone?

TIA - Gene

I have all these $NtUninstall..... folders left over after a series of Windows updates. Can I safelt delete them?

A:Folders left after Windows Updates

I deleted all of mine and haven't regretted it yet. Just be certain that none of them have caused you any problems. I have one in particular, KB824145, that gives me scrolling problems while browsing. MS is aware of the problem but the fix hasn't appeared yet. I uninstalled the update and will wait for the fix. If that applies to you, react accordingly.

Beyond that little caveat, there is a nice little tool that will remove all those files and also clean the entries from the Add/remove program. It was written by Doug Knox and works very well, as do all of his creations. I'll post the link to it here in a moment.

>> Here it is.. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_remove_hotfix_backup.zip

Download that, Unzip it and run it. It works on XP only, I think.

btw, if you have any doubts about deleting these things, back them up to a cd or whatever. You can always copy any of them back that you choose. I didn't take that precaution but then I'm more daring than most. Actually I have them all on my weekly disk images.

I have the latest version of the Firefox browser (3.0.10)
I'm using an Admin account on Windows Vista Home Premium.

When ever I download ANYTHING it just doesn't show up to the designated download folder set from Mozilla Download Manager.

This all Started oddly after a restarted my laptop.
After that I've been getting this problem.

(Took screen-shots for accuracy)

My Hp Laptop Specs:

First I open my Firefox Browser and do the following
Tools>Options> Save files to: "Downloads"

Then I download a random file (Gimp Photo Editor)

When the download says its finished, I then go to "Downloads"

Open the "Downloads" Folder, And no Gimp file whatsoever (folder empty)

Okay okay, so I then restart my laptop.

So maybe somethings wrong with the "Downloads" folder.
I'll just go with saving my download to my "Desktop" instead.
Much easier right?
Wrong. Same sh*t.

Again here we go:
Tools>Options> Save files to: "Desktop"

Thinking, "Hmm maybe its the file I'm trying to download thats the problem"
Again wrong, any and I mean ANY download will not show up.

I try again to download the most random file I picked from cnet.com
All to my "Desktop" where I set it to be.

Download Complete:

Go to my Desktop, BAM! absolutely nada again.

I would uninstall FireFox and reinstall it and see if your problem clears up. There's an application called mozbackup out there to back up your profile.

I Went To Upload My Digital Camera Stuff And I Had To Install The Disk For It. Well My D And E Drives Both Aren't Showing In My Computer. I Don't Know Where There At Or What. My Friend Thinks There Completly Dumped But I Don't Know. I Was Wondering If Anyone Could Help Me. Is There A Site I Can Go To And Install Them? Or What? Thanks.

A:My D And E Drives Aren't Showing

Go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager and see if the CD-ROM's appear there. If they do see if theres a problem with them.

This is a common solution to drives that have disappeared from My Computer and have one of the mentioned error codes in Device Manager: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/EN-US/

A:Pictures aren't showing up

Some webmasters can incorrectly incorporate pics or there may be an upload problem. Does it happen with all sites or just one?

If you can post one of the url's someone can check it out and see if its your problem or the website.
