I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm working on my friend's Compaq Presario 1930 laptop, an oldie with Win98SE. I had him buy this wireless card, but I can't install the drivers. According to the info with the card, it needs a minimum CPU of 500 Mhz and 128 MB RAM. The laptop only has around 300 Mhz CPU capability and 64 MB RAM.

So I'm hoping someone here has experience with older laptops and can recommend a card that will work with minimal resources.

Thanks in advance!

I recently removed Win Vista from my Presario c700 and installed Win XP Pro. Now I cannot see the wireless card in the Device Manager. There are bunch of "yellowed" devices including one called unknown device. Of course, I cannot access the internet or my other computers from the laptop. However, if I hardwire the laptop to the router, it works fine.
I have Dlink wireless router and two PCs hardwired to it. My roommate has a laptop and it works fine with the wireless network. Any suggestions to fix my problems.

Thanks people.

I turned the computer off properly and when I turned it back on later the next day the card did not work. The driver doesn't even exist. I have re installed the drivers and still nothing. I have a switch in the front of my computer which is red when the card is off and blue when the card is on. When I switch the card into the on position nothing happens. It stays red. Well I have a Compaq Presario SR5113WM which was bought from Wal-Mart for a relatively low price. It's a pretty low-end computer so I really need a new graphics card for it. I know if I got one it would probably require getting a new PSU also, so does anyone have any suggestions on a good graphics card that would be compatible with my computer? Games I'm looking to play would be Counter-Strike: Source, TF2, L4D, Killing Floor, etc..Most valve games. Thank you in advance for any help. As for the powersupply, you do probably need a new one:

A:New graphics card for a Compaq Presario SR5113WM

Your computer has a X16 PCI-E slot for a video card, so you should have a large selection of video cards to choose from. The problem you'll run into is room in your case, and you have an underpowered 250W power supply. You'll need at least a good 450W power supply and video card that fit in your case. Pretty much any video card you purchase will be significantly more powerful than your old built-in video chip.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151074

The above should do. I'm not 100% on the size of the power supply. It may or may not fit inside your case. I'm very sure the video card will fit.

hello everyone.i have very little knowledge about laptop hardware and this is why i am posting here.
i have a compaq presario v6000 and it has been running fine for the past couple of years.a while back it started making noises and started heating up,but it never self booted or shutdown by itself.i had planned to get it serviced and clean its fan etc but it got delayed..2 days back, when i tried turning it on, it just wouldn't.i mean i switch on the power,i see the volume and power LEDs turned on but the screen wont appear.
i believe its graphics card has burned up or something. i have dropped it off the repair shop and all that they are doing is just scaring me saying that the graphics card can't be replaced as it is;the entire motherboard has to be changed.and even if the card could be changed,it wouldn't give any guarantee of not burning up again
so guyz here is my question: can the graphics card of a Compaq Presario V6000 notebook be replaced?i donot know which model it is but i guess its the default card that comes with every notebook of the said model.
i would really appreciate a quick response as i need an urgent verdict.i can not afford an entire new motherboard at this time but i need to work on the laptop..

A:Dead graphics card on Compaq Presario V6000

I think the shops advise is most probably correct. I've been unable to confirm this for certain but in general 90% of laptops have the graphics card integrated into the motherboard, so if the graphics have failed then it has to be a new mobo.

The overheating was probably caused by a faulty fan or dust build up. This could also have damaged the CPU. Considering the cost of replacement your best bet would be a new PC.

I have read some reports that the V6000 had known problems with faulty soldering on the graphics chips. So, there is just a slim chance you might be able to find an electronics expert who could check the solderiing but it is micro soldering to say the least.

Does a Compaq Presario (Pentium 4) have any video card slots?

I ran that cpu-z program and under graphics interface its all grey...not sure if that means I have no slots, or if my integrated 82845g Graphics controller has something to do with it

A:Does a Compaq Presario 6000 have any video card slots?

Very easy to find out. Unhook all the cables and then set the tower on a clean surface, there are usually screws or thumbscrews holding the side pannels into place(when your look at the front of the tower take the pannel on the left side off) unscrew those and pull the pannel off. BEFORE TOUCHING ANYTHING ground yourself on something metal like a fosit or the inside of your case(not the inner parts just case) Now look a the expansion slots, if you see a slot that is set further back than the others it is a graphics expansion port - if its the same size roughly as the others but setback its AGP - if its longer and setback its PCI express. Now put the side pannel back on - hook up the cables and you're good to go.

A:compatible graphics card for my compaq presario sr1630nx

HP doesn't list what it has for a power supply here,

Compaq Presario SR1630NX Desktop PC Product Specifications - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

but going on how HP likes to put in a power supply that is just powerful enough to run the system as it is out of the box, I'm guessing that it will be something in the 250-300W range. If that is what it is (only way to find out is pop the side off and see what it shows on the label), then a new power supply is also going to be needed.

With that in mind, how much are you looking to spend?

A:Upgrading a Compaq Presario SR5450F graphics card

The thing with companies like HP, Dell, etc. is their cases are designed so that they try to force the buyer to go through them for upgrades costing considerably more $.

Measure your power supply's dimensions and we'll take it from there. Also, make sure your motherboard can handle an upgrade to this card.

Can you link us to your system?

Hello and Welcome to Techspot!!

I couldn't find much info about your computer.
Open it, and take a look at the mobo (motherboard ), if you see only slots like these, you only have standard PCI slots:

If you see a slot like this brown one (not necessarily brown, can be another color), then you have an AGP slot:

If you're lucky enough, and have a long slot like this one, you have a PCI-Express slot:

What kind of slot do you have?
If you've only have standard PCI slots, check this great thread by Vnf4ultra:

Hello, all.

I am trying to install an ATI Rage 128 Pro 32MB PCI video card in my old Compaq Presario 7594 Desktop with onboard video running Win98. I have tried installing the card and the drivers and deleting the old drivers in just about every possible combination. Here's the problem - when the card is installed, I get no video on the monitor at all, even when the monitor is connected to the onboard video connector. The only setting in the BIOS that seems to have anything to do with video is under Advanced>PCI Devices>[Onboard] VGA. The default setting here seems to be "Disabled," but the only user-selectable settings are IRQ 3, 5, or 11.

The ATI driver installation program will not complete the install if the card is not in the slot, so I have installed the generic PCI Display Adapter driver, still with no luck.

I want to get this @!$% card installed so my son can play his sim games on this machine instead of my VAIO laptop.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jason

I'm not sure if this belongs in Drivers or here, but I'm having an issue with the video drivers on my laptop. It's an HP Compaq Presario V6000 series,v6205 according to the limited tech support I received.
The laptop was purchased in '06 and originally ran Windows Vista, however I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit a couple of days ago, and have had an issue finding compatible drivers, namely a driver for my nVidia graphics card. HP's website has the drivers for XP and Vista, but want to charge me to get 7 compatible drivers (59.99 for a one-time use). I've read on other forums that it is possible to take the non-manufacturer drivers and modify the .INF files to work, but I'm inexperienced with that sort of stuff. Can anyone offer some advice or walk me through this? The card is an nVidia GeForce 6150. If there are any other details I've left out, I'd be happy to add them. Thanks in advance.
EDIT: In the event that I can't secure the proper drivers, does anyone know if Linux is an option for such a machine? Or would the same driver issues be present?

I tried Windows Recovery. I can't safe mode it, and choosing previous working settings doesn't work either.

Did you try a Windows recovery or was it a System Restore? Have you tried 'Last Known Good Configuration'?

Upon boot tap the F8 key and when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.

If it works try updating your video driver.

Hi. I have a problem with a Compaq Presario running XP Home. I took the CD player out and cleaned out broken pieces of a CD that was destroyed in it. I got it cleaned out, put back together and now the pc won't boot up. I don't know what went wrong. Cleaning the CD player was quite easy and went back together okay. I hooked all of the wires up the way they were.
On the front of this computer, there are two lights. One on the left which is green, and one on the right which is orange. Normally, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on first, then the orange light comes on during the loading process. You can see the boot process on the monitor.
Now, after hooking it back up today, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on, then the orange one comes on and goes back off after a moment. The green light stays on. Nothing at all shows up on the monitor, not even a blinking cursor -- it just stays blank. It stays that way indefinitely -- nothing.
The monitor light is on so it is apparently getting power, but shows nothing. I'm sure the monitor is hooked up correctly; it can only be plugged in one way.
While I had everything unhooked and was cleaning the CD player, I plugged the CD player back in for a moment and plugged in the power cord to the pc and pushed the power button. The power came on and allowed me to eject the empty tray. I did this to get the tray out of the way so I could clean beneath it. I tried to turn the power back off... Read more

Was told the DVD drive was shot. (I'm coming in on the tail end of this problem) so it was replaced &tested. Customer called & said that the tech took the wrong CD out & he left the old burner in. He removed old dvd & replaced it with the old cd-rw. Customer calls and says that the cd-rw no longer works. So I have the PC back in the shop again.

Neither drive appears to work although the power works fine on both--open & closing drawer. At one time the cd-r did recognize a disk...but only once & when I took out the disk to try another, it wouldn't read it again. The DVD doesn't even have a drive letter now.

ide cable to mobo is f drive first. e drive last. power supply is p2 f drive, p3 e drive. both appear to be pinned as slave drives. do not see anything in compaq setup to modify the cd settings.

A friend recently handed me a Compaq Presario 2100 -- a circa 2005 laptop computer running XP -- and asked if I could "rejuvenate" it. I agreed to try. He didn't even have a transformer for it, so I had to use the one for my Win 7 Toshiba laptop.

After doing a huge cleanup of the HD (removed lots of old programs, installed and ran CCleaner, Avast!, SuperAntiSpyware, Auslogics Defragger, etc.), the computer seems to work OK, but despite all the cleaning and defragging, is very slow. It would, though, be suitable for an underprivileged child who only wanted to use it for e-mail and Web surfing. But before we can give it to anybody, we need to remove all traces of the names of the former owners. I deleted their User Accounts, but they remain named under Documents & Settings. Windows does not allow you to delete or change the name(s) on user folders under D&S, not even in Safe Mode. So my first question is, is there any way to do that without rendering Windows unworkable? If not, am I going to have to reformat the HD and reinstall Win XP? I have a Win XP CD, so can do that, but do NOT have the driver CD. Is it possible to install Win XP so it's operable and thereafter download the drivers from HP's Web site?

Hi - thanks for your attention and help.

Saw this was posted before here but unresolved. That was years back.

I lost power last night, and now today, Compaq Presario SR1215CL is unresponsive. Was not moved, is plugged into a top notch surge protector, that also the printer, monitor, etc utilize and they are all operational.

There is a rapid clicking noise and a tiny green light in the back rapidly flashing.
When I unplug it, the clicking and flashing slows and finally stops.

Must stress this computer has been fine. No movement, impact, trauma, etc. Just power off and refuses to come back on.

Any advice? Have been Googling help threads before coming here. Thank you.

(I switched from an AMD K6-2/400ACK to the AMD K6-2/500ACK but I don't know why my system is still running at 400mhz??). I found a couple of tiny yellow jumper switches on the motherboard but I don't know what their for, and if they are capable of speeding up the system? Can I speed up the core speed somehow? Why is the speed still at 400mhz if it should be 500mhz?

multiplier= x4.0
Bus Speed= 99.6 mhz
Rate FSB = 99.6 mhz

Windows XP Pro.

This laptop was recently given to a friend of mine. She was told that it would just keep freezing up or shutting off. She brought it to me to check for her because if wouldn't boot. I used a boot disk and got it booted and it seemed ok. Gave it back and she had it a wk and brought it back with problem of freezing up and then no boot. I just put HWmonitor on it and the temps are running from 62-75 C. She said it was constantly doing windows updates and the last one it wouldn't re-boot. I have a plastic think I use with my laptop that has 3 small fans on it and you put it under the laptop. I have had it on over an hour and it has gone up from 70-75 for a high. I finally got it to come up with using Chk Dsk and it did several repairs. That's all I have done with it so far. Does anyone have any suggestions? She didn't have anything with fans under it, but she had it up on a broiler pan off the table.

Hopefully I posted in the right section. But anyways I will be as detailed as possible. Currently I have a Compaq Presario CQ56 115dx running Wins7 out of factory. One day I was using my computer perfectly fine, everything normal and running great. I decide to close the lid to put it to sleep.

I come back later to find that it didn't actually sleep and was just stuck there. This has happened before and I would just turn off the computer and it would be fine. But recently I did and it is now stuck at bootup. The caps locks blinks 1 time, which corresponds to CPU not functioning I believe. I reseated harddrive and ram, didn't do much.

Then randomly as I am trying to get it to boot by turning it on and off, waited a few and it booted up normally. Perfect. Then I decided to shut it down instead of putting it to sleep just to find later when trying to get on, its back to the problem.

Any help would be appreciated on how to prevent this without any major repair work.

After lots of installs, uninstalls, and other acquired crap after quite a few years of use, I'm planning on reformatting my computer (specs are in profile).

I have a few simple questions which I hope you can answer. First, I have a single hard-drive that is split in two partitions: C:\ and D:\. The D:\ has always been locked down as a "recovery" drive. Can I just reformat my computer from the D:\?

If not, a few years ago, I made a set of recovery disks using the recovery creator. I am unsure on this, but when I made the recovery disks, will it restore my computer to the point when I created them (hope not), or will it completely reformat everything (what I'm hoping for).

I plan on doing a "destructive," clean install in order to completely reformat my computer to stock specifications.

Lastly, can I upgrade straight from SP1 to SP3? Or do you recommend that I use something like Project Dakota (or RyanVM) to bring me up to spiff with SP2, then make the final jump to SP3?

Thanks for the help guys. If you need more information or if I was unclear about something, I'll be happy to provide some more info.

Can I just reformat my computer from the D:\? If you have a XP Installation disc, you format from that early in the reinstallaion process.

The Restoration set will restore to pc to the state is was shipped. It wipes the drive and then restores

I plan on doing a "destructive," clean install in order to completely reformat my computer to stock specifications. That is laikiely your only option with the Restoration process

I just got a Compaq Presario S5000NX second hand with Windows XP and so far it's working great. Naturally I have to reload some third party software, but so far so good. I use Altec Lansing speakers (3 pieces with subwoofer). There is absolutely no sound whatsoever, including system sounds. I read one post that said to plug the speakers into something else to see if it's the speakers (thank God for this site!) so I plugged them into my iPod and they work just fine. I am at a loss as to what to do. There are no system sounds, but whenever I plug them into the tower connector it makes a sound, so I know something's happening, I'm just not sure what.

I have Googled and searched all over for drivers, etc., but all I seem to be able to find are sites that charge for updating drivers. I'm not even sure I need drivers for these speakers, so I don't want to pay for something I don't even need. Ugh! Please help!

Guys, I have looked all over the net trying to find a solution for this. Hope someone here can help.

My sister has a Compaq Presario that she bought new, with WinXPHome installed. It is completely fried...every keystroke takes at least several minutes to work. I defragged (didn't look bad....but took over an hour to complete) Nothing I did helped. She did not get any restore Discs, and there is no hidden partition on her HD. Windows restore only went back a couple of months...did not help.

I did notice even when new that it seemed sluggish. It is a Turion 64, about 1.6 gig, I think.

I did a Ghost (a several hour job!) of the HD (just in case), then formatted, after saving and downloading all drivers.
I have a Boxed XPHome full install CD, that my wife uses on her computer. I tried to use that disc, with my sister's number, which did not work.

I did put a full working XPPro on the Compaq, just to verify that it would work good. It does. Plenty fast, all the saved hardware drivers work. However, I can't leave it there, as she won't be able to activate it, besides which she likes XPHome.

Can anyone here tell me how to use my XPHome disc, and get it authenticated with her number?
Someone elsewhere said to use my disc, with my number to install, and then CALL Microsoft for an activation number, after telling them on the phone what I had to do. Do you agree with this?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Experts:

Neighbor brought down his Compaq Presario 6010US machine complaining about running very slow, and trying to get rid of Spyware Nuker that NAV was complaining about. Machine has an AMD Athlon running at 1.4 gHz with 224 MB RAM. Tried Norton's removal method to no avail; Program Add/Remove couldn't find it. Installed Spybot S&D, did updates, ran it, removed everything bad it found. Did same thing with AdAware.

I have a Compaq Presario that has run very, very slow since I first plugged it in. I purchased it about 6 months ago from Best Buy. It takes about 5 minutes to start up and can take up to a minute to go from one program to another. I'm wondering if I need to add more memory or if I have a bunch of pre-installed programs that can be deleted to speed things up. Can someone help me out? If I'm in the wrong forum, I apologize.

Here are my system stats:

Intel Celeron D CPU 3.33 GHz
447 MB Memory
Windows Vista

The CPU came loaded with Vista, but I'm wondering it the system capacity is big enough to support it. Any suggestions? Thanks!
