T440P no power, no response

Q: T440P no power, no response

Hello Lenovo Community, I got my T440p three years ago. Now it cannot power up at all. I did the following test. 1. Removed the memory modules, removed hard disk, removed optical driver.2. plug the external battery and AC adapter.3. The red LED on the A side, the dot on "i" of "ThinkPad" will blink three time. I can tell the laptop is intial powered per the manual.4. Press the power butoon, nothing displayed, the light on the power button is off, no fan running, no beep.5. Disconnect the coil-battery of BIOS, and re-connect after about 10 seconds.6. plug the external battery and AC adapter.7. The red LED on the A side blink 3 times. Press the power button. I heard 5 short beeps. The fan is running. That means the power button is still functional.8. Unplug the AC adapter and external battery (because i donot know how to stop the fan)9. Plug the AC adapter and external battery back and press the power button10. no beep, no fan running, no sound, no display.11. the output voltage of the AC adapter is 20.6VDC. the voltage of the coil-battery is 3.06VDC. both are good per the manual. I guess something going wrong on the main board, maybe the BIOS, the CPU... Any reply from you is very appreciate.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Repeat the above step, but leave the CMOS battery disconnected for at least 20 mins...

You will need RAM to boot, if you have two RAM modules installed try booting with only one, alternating the RAM slots.

If it still doesn't work, also disconnect the wlan and wwan cards, the touchpad and try again with one RAM at a time.

Let us know how it goes...

Just started in the last week, when powered on, the unit powers on/of anywhere from 2-5 times before finally staying up and running normally.I tried this fix: removed battery and AC line, hit power button 10 times at 1 second intervals, held power button for 30 seconds...but no luck. The unit is ~ 2.5 years old and had the 9v battery. Thanks for any help!

Hi all, A few days ago, the rectangular plug on my old charger finally separated from the cable, marking the end of an era in laptop power supplies. Having used third-party adapters before with good results, I ordered Elecbrain's 90W slim-tip adapter as a replacement off of Amazon. The new adapter charges my computer, but sometimes (maybe about 1 out of 3 or 4 times) fails to charge effectively ("plugged in, not charging"). I often have to wiggle the computer end of the plug in the port a bit to get it to charge at all; it's also much harder to insert the plug into the computer than any of my previous cables. 1) Has anyone had any negative experiences with the Elecbrain adapter, and 2) in the likely event that I return the Elecbrain adapter, there any difference between these three official Lenovo adapters: 0B46994, 888015012, 4X20E75140? One of them is not labeled as "slim tip" and one of them is for the ThinkCentre instead of the ThinkPad, but the thumbnails all look identical. My machine is a Thinkpad T440P purchased in late 2015, model number 20AN006NUS.

Recently i replaced the mobo in my T440p machine. Because i wasnt sure it was working i checked it right after i connected to screen.I got a a picture however i didnt let it resume much more just the ThinkPad logo. I reassembled it totally while checking after each connected cable whether it was still working. It was. Right after finish i wanted to switch it on but i got some beeps (dont remember the pattern) then no screen at all, just the power button is blinking showing the AC power connection. Nothing happens with just battery  or battery + AC power.I disassembled it and reconnected what i could but didnt help.Since then there isnt any beeping at AC adapter connection just the power button is blinking 3 times then repeat. So the situation is that i have now a disassembled laptop again because i try to find out some solution. Anybody any idea? Is that possible that it switches on just in case of being fully assembled?

So, my two 170w AC adapters for my P51 arrived yesterday from Lenovo.  I grabbed one of them this morning and headed to work - only to discover upon my arrival that the adapters do not include the power cords. I have three adapters and cords for a T440p.  Will these power cords work with the P51 adapter? (On the bright side, I only have 3h:10m left in my work day today...)

T440p Windows 10 Pro. I just formatted and did a clean, ground up reinstall. I used System Update to gather and install all the Lenovo specific drivers, etc. including the power management driver. Prior to the rebuild there was a green icon in the notification area (lower right of screen) that displayed plugged in (or not plugged in) status and battery remaining (in minutes). I no longer have these and would like them back. Any suggestions will be greatly ppreciated.

Hey folks! Thanks for checking out my post, I've looked online, but couldn't find a solution, so I thought I'd make my own post. Some details: This laptop is an HP DV6-3064 ca. It was purchased refurbished about a year ago, and has had almost no problems to this point. I was at a friend's house using my laptop, and everything was working fine. Shut down, packed it up, took it home, pulled it out, pushed the power button, and nothing. I didn't leave it in the sun, or bump it on anything. Just brought it home and it wouldn't turn on, with no warning signs or anything. Now I looked into power issues and I can guarantee my battery as well as the AC adapter are perfectly fine. I also tried the hard reset but still get nothing. The light by the DC jack does not turn on when I plug it in. Now, I'm relatively tech-savvy, and since my laptop was no longer under warrantee I figured I'd check it out for myself. (Don't really have the resources to take it to a repair shop). The DC jack looked like it might have had some wear on it, so I ordered a new one from a reputable seller on eBay, replaced the old one, and nothing changed. I'm completely at a loss here. Weird thing is, when I have the laptop opened, and plugged in, I can feel the motherboard heat up a bit. Not sure if it's supposed to do that, but I know there is power going to it, even though the DC jack light still does not light up. If anybody has any insight, PLEASE let me know, and if you need any more info... Read more

A:HP DV6-3000 Getting NO power. No response from power button ...

Bannor,  The LED on the DC jack usually is an indicator of whether the AC adapter is working properly.  That light is on a different circuit and does not require a good system board.  If the light does not come on usually the adapter is bad. If you've already tested or replaced the adapter then the dc jack is the next step however when HP replaces this part in the repair depot they usually replace the entire board (with jack soldered on) at once.  You might consider replacing the entire board. Wes

Hello, My Thinkpad t440p turns off and on when power changes. If power is disconnected, the screen goes black like sleeping then comes back on after a few seconds. It does that as well when the power is connected. I tried the whole advanced display settings thing that I found here. It didn't work. The change is uncomfortable, especially given that I may not be prepared for the change (power situation and all). Please help!

A:T440p sleeps and wakes on power change - connected and disconnected. Screen turns off then on

Hello and welcome,

Your laptop actually sleeps?  It's not just the screen blanking?

And please explain what you mean by "the whole advanced display settings thing".  It's impossible to know what you've already tried from that description.  Do you mean you've set the AC and battery screen refresh rates to be the same?  That is what usually fixes what you describe - if it's just screen blanking.

Keyboard doesn't respond on this screen. Start Normally is highlighted and can't be changed and when I press Enter nothing happens. All lights and fans start OK. I don't have XP disc with this to reload. Any simple solutions? Thanks.

After being shutdown overnight (no issues working yesterday), the PC does not start: no leds or fans or anything. I followed the on-line troubleshooting:1. AC power adapter shows no sign of damage. Usually connected through UPS, but this AM switched to normal AC power just in case. When power adapter connected to computer, the white LED next to the power jack lights as is normal. 2. Removed battery. The battery charge indicator shows fully charged. 3. Performed hard reset (with battery removed and AC adapter disconnected) -- hold switch down for 30s. Reconnecting AC adapter, there is no change in symptoms 4. Disconnecting  AC adapter and installing the battery, there is no change in symptoms 5. Could not identify location of a lid switch, but I did fully open and close 10 times. No change in symptoms. 6. I am now leaving AC adapter & battery connected for 30 min in case there is a problem (although battery indicates no issues thorough its diagnostic test button) Can you help with any additional steps I can take to get the PC running?

I have a week old HP DV6-2020sa Laptop. I tried to burn a CD in Windows Media Player but the CD just started skipping constantly and wouldn't write. So after 10 minutes of waiting I tres to cancel but it wouldn't let me so I had to end task on WMP.

The CD drive was still making the loud whirring noise though. So I decided to shut it down. As soon as I clicked Shut Down from the Start Menu the laptop went straight off (black screen).

I tried to turn it back on but nothing happens. No response to the power button at all.

The light where the power cable connects to the laptop is the only sign of life.

I haven't phoned HP as their call centre is closed until tommorrow morning. It is urgent that I get back onto the laptop as my girlfriends dissertation essay for university is on there.

Please can somebody help!

Hey,
My PC won't respond to any sort of power input at the moment (i.e. pressing the power button yields zero response. Usually my USB mouse lights up when connected, even if the PC itself is off but not anymore).

I've checked the wall socket (and have tried a few), checked the PSUs output setting and on switch, and made sure everything was plugged in properly. I did recently install a Soundblaster ZxR, but it was working fine for a couple of weeks between then and now.

I just wanted to confirm that it is likely a PSU problem rather than anything else, and what I could do to obtain a more accurate diagnosis. I don't have access to any other compatable PSUs (I have another with 4 rather than 8 pins for the CPU - sorry for my lack of technical jargon). There are no unusual smells/noises, and my only multimeter has a single prong.

My GPU is an HD6850, CPU is AMD Athlon II x4, motherboard is 870A-UD3. WD Hard Drive (it says WD10EARS on the sticker) and a Samsung BDDVD player too. The PSU is a 500W Cooler Master RS-500-PCAR-J3.

Thanks

Edit: Alright, turns out the PSU had in fact bust - the shop I took it to replaced it with a Widetech 750W PSU. Google says to upgrade immediately... How does the current PSU compare to the the original Cooler Master (in original post)?

This is my sister's cpu i'm talking about so i have no idea if there was an error message before the following happened:

She was booting the computer and it just shut off. There is no response from the power button. Yes all the cords are plugged in inside and outside the box. The computer is kinda old, has had major problems with XP, so is back to 98. PII 266, 312 MB ram, GeForce 2 video card, 2 WD hdds. On a possibly related note, the problem with XP was that the registry was corrupted every shutdown. Could this be an issue with the mobo? I know the ram is good, and the power supply seems okay.

Another mobo-ish issue: The comp will only go past bios loading area with 2 devices on IDE 0. It hangs as if there is no hdds in it if there is only one. Yes i checked the jumpers and such. Either hdd on IDE 0 fails boot if there's one, but passes whether it's master or slave if both are in.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi everyone,

I went to my PC this morning to discover it refused to turn on, and no response of any kind happening (no sounds, lights or fans operating).

My initial thoughts were that the PSU had died... so I went and picked up a new PSU, which didn't change anything. Still no response.

I'm now assuming the motherboard is faulty.

----

some factors that may or may not have anything to do with the cause of the problem:

- Dust - when I opened up the case there was a lot (almost a blanket) of dust in my zalman CPU fan, graphics card and also a little generally within the case. Although I hadn't experienced any artifacts suggesting stuff was overheating (plus it's damn cold in my house this time of year, so that probably helped)

- There was a powercut during the night - somehow this might have triggered what's caused the fault? I also had set my PC to sleep as per usual, instead of switching it off.

- The extra Front panel USB ports on the top of my case stopped working about 2 days before. I accidently tripped over a USB device plugged into it, and it twisted the port slightly, but still carried on working for the rest of the day, but at some point it stopped and I had to only use the back ports.
----

Is there any suggestions you guys have to find the cause of the problem?

cheers

Mike

A:Suddenly died - no power or motherboard response

Hi Mike. The power cut you mention is interesting. Did the fuse in your house trip? Are other items in the room working off the same plugs?..because thats happened to me before.

Oooh, dust will kill in the long run if it's not cleaned...

My Yoga 3 was bought 3 months ago at a local retailer. It had been an open box model. A couple of nights ago while using it, my wife got a Blue Screen of some variety. Since then, the machine doesn't work at all. When I push the power button (or the reset button next to it), the KB backlight comes on and power light comes on for about a second and then they both shut off. This cycle is repeated indefinitely until I hold down the power button at which time everything goes off. That is the only response I get from the thing. This machine is only 3 months old but I cannot find any way to get in touch with Lenovo for any kind of support, so I thought I would try here first. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,I recently purchased a used T440p, more specifically a model 20AW-S0RK03. Unfortuntatly it arrived damaged and, naive as I was, I accepted a small partial refund and figured it wouldn't be too much on an issue to replace it...However, it seems that this part is rather difficult to obtain and furthermore I now realize that the palmrest for the T440p exists with several different internal designs (number/placement of screw holes etc.).If possible I would much prefer not having to disassemble it twice - once to figure out the part number and once again when the part arrives - so if anyone can inform me what part number I need for my specific model (20AW-S0RK03), then that would be a huge help.Any tips on where to buy (if allowed) will also be greatly appreciated. Note that I'm a student, so both cost and delivery time (I'm in Europe) needs to be considered. Thanks in advance. I really hope that someone can assist me with this tiresome situation.Rasmus

Before I buy and install an M.2 card, I wanted to ask just what do I need to know or do before and after the installation. The installation itself is basically simple but I'm not real sure how to set it up or what it can be used for? Do I really need it? I've read several articles about this and found more confusion. Some claim to use it as a boot drive for storing Windows, while others claim it is only good for existing drive cache. I'm wondering if adding the M.2 will even be of any use or improvement to me. Does anyone know anything about this? Please keep it like me, very simple. I'm not even sure which one to get for my T440p. I just picked up a t440p, and I am hoping to do some upgrades on it.  I got a Transcend 512 GB SSD for the M.2 slot.   It installs just fine, and Windows 10 sees the drive.  The only issue is that when the M.2 SSD is installed, there is no wireless adapter in the system.  When I remove the M.2 SSD, the wireless adapters are back. Is it not possible to have both in the system and functional?  I am hoping to make the M.2 SSD the OS drive, and use the other SSD drives (2.5") for storage.

Just gifted this computer:

Thinkpad T440p 20AN  00DEUS

S/N PC-*****

Only thing that Lenovo would give me was vague configuration on the 20AN. Was hoping someone could direct me to something more specific.

Thanx!

Also, will the WiFi card from a T400/420 work in the t440p?

Is it possible to upgrade my CPU and RAM on my T440p?

A:T440p CPU and RAM upgrade

Welcome to the forum!

Yes, you can upgrade both. Max RAM is 16GB (2x 8GB), and you could install any CPU from the below list:

i5-4210M
i5-4300M
i5-4330M
i7-4600M
i7-4700MQ
i7-4710MQ
i7-4800MQ
i7-4900MQ

I'm only listing few models for the sake of keeping the list short. Basically any Haswell CPU should work.

To do this upgrades you need Lenovo's Hardware Maintenance Manual, which you can download from here:  click me!

Hi, i have recently got a t440p and i have ran into a power throttling issue, this only happens when GPU is loaded the HD4600 and the cpu is utilized a bit, i have even undervolted but it seems to power throttle, is there any way to raise the tdp limit to 47 instead of 37 without flashing the bios? i have tried throttlestop's "Disable and Lock Turbo power limits" but it doesn't work.also my temperatures are not a problem and are quite far away from throttling temp.

My trustworthy T440p is approaching it's 5 yr Bday. And I am trying to check the health of the system. One of the components I am looking at is a 256Gb SDD (Toshiba THNSFJ256GCSU), which - according to product specs has a guaranteed lifetime of 5 yrs. Naturally, I don't expect it to die on 5 yrs +1 day, but nevertheless I am wondering about the health of the SDD. I used CrystalDiskInfo, which didn't find any red flags. Total bad block count is limited to 64. So all is good? Main question I have: how long should I expect the SDD to keep functioning. Is there a way to check/ measure this? Thx for any adviceTuur

A:Toshiba SDD End of Life in T440p ?

I have had SSDs die the first month and have some that lasted many years,  and old ones that are still being used.  I use them until they die or get sick, but I take backups, whether they are new or old

Fixed typo in subject line - mod

Hello everyone, I need to ask you a question about ram voltage of a t440p. It came with 4gb, and wanted to change one slot to a bigger memory module.Techincal data say this laptop uses ONLY DDR3L (1.35v) because of the Intel i5-4300 (which also states this in its tech sheet). My question arised when I opened the backplate and found there are already 2x2gb modules of DDR3 (1.5v) working in it. When searching for data sheets of the rams, both work only at 1.5v.What's happening? I really don't underestand if they are running in a lowered voltage state, or why they are working at all. Here's one of the modulesThank you in advance

A:[QUESTION] t440p RAM upgrade

Is this a second hand T440p? (I don't recall Lenovo installing Kingston Value RAM modules in ThinkPads...)

Basically there is nothing you should worry about, a T440p can use both 1.35v and 1.5v RAM if I remember correctly. And 1.5v RAM can also run at 1.35v.

If you plan to upgrade your RAM I would remove those modules (they're Kingston's cheap RAM line) and install 2x 4GB or 2x 8GB (the latter is the max RAM supported by this model).

First of all greetings to all of you on this forum! This is my very first topic in here and, quite frankly, might be one of the only threads I'll ever make, that's because I'm on an impasse where I need some advice before doing anything that might mess things up. Anyway! Back to the situation at hand. While working earlier this week I accidently spilled coffee all over my computer (thanks body for having a sudden urge to sneeze just when I was taking a sip of it). Presently I shut my computer down, removed the keyboard and dried everything that I could below the keyboard/"fluid-shield" and squeezed some paper towel below it keys as well. After all that I hooked everything back together and turned the computer on to check for failures and unfortunately one little key wasn't working: my dear little left key. Luckly it wasn't a letter key and I could carry on with my work for up until I had some time to try to resurrect it (which is today). I have to mention that my warrant expired an year ago and I do have some experience working with electronics, so it wouldn't hurt to disassemble the keyboard itself and check for coffee-blockage in the circuitry, which I suspect it is the case because otherwise I'd expect a whole array of keys to go bad all at once. The thing is, after removing the board from the computer I can't remove the plastic back (the one that slides and hides the screws) save for the lateral plastic clamps. Digging the web for a solution didn't... Read more

Hi, I have a T440p Lenovo Thinkpad laptop. OS is Windows 7 professional. It is very slow as visible when trying to open any normal sized file (like PPT, word doc etc.) stored on my local harddrive, it takes visible amount of time before file actually opens up. Earlier I was having HP Elitebook with Windows XP and similar files used to open-up instantly. Please let me know what could be the reason and how this issue could be resolved. Regards,Amit

As I understand it, the T440p has three options for internal storage : (1) Internal SATA slot for a 2.5" drive.(2) SATA slot for a 2.5" drive in the Ultrabay/caddy.(3) M.2 slot.My question: Do all of these slots work at SATA3 6Gbps ? Is the interface for all three SATA3 6Gbps ? Will new SATA3 6Gbps SSDs work at SATA3 6Gbps speeds for all three  ?  What is the maximum capacity for each slot ?

Crucial's website lists CT2KIT102464BF160B (8GB x2) as incompatible with the T440p but it meets all the requirements listed on Lenovo's spec sheet of the T440p, it's 1.35v PC3-12800 16GB RAM. Should I just go ahead and buy it or will it simply not work?
