Preferred Solution: Internet Explorer Stops and Starts Browsing Intermittently - Error: "This web page cannot be displayed"

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi Guys,

I let my mate borrow my server yesterday, and I got the internet up and running for him fine, He's installed a few programs since then. They include:

Adobe Photoshop
MSN Live Messenger

and he left the computer on over night and restarted it this morning, and the default gateway has disspaeared and all he seems to get when going onto internet explorer is a "Page can not be displayed" error message.

I tried having a look at it, going in to Start > run > cmd > ipconfig

and it showed his IP and subnet mask, but the default gateway did not appear.

I couldn't figure out how to get it back.
Can you guys help at all ??

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

I'm using Windows 98 and the most current version of Internet Explorer. Quite frequently, it would take minutes to browse from one page to another or at other times, I would just get a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error. Also sometimes I have troubles with the vertical scrollbar.

Is it possible to uninstall Internet Explorer? If so, how? I've already tried to "repair" it, but it doesn't work nor does reinstalling. Would it be okay to install an older version over the current version?

I've already established with my Internet service provider that it's an issue with Internet Explorer, not my actual connection. I've tried so many different things in an attempt to fix this problem and now I'm looking for new ideas. Any help would be much appreciated.

I've tried doing the steps outlined int his article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=241344 but I'm not sure how to go about Step 9 and onwards.

When I look at a TECHGUYS FORUM Web Page that displays questions/problems/solutions "Error on Page" is displayed in the lower left corner of the IE Window. The following is always the detail information no matter what forum report page is reviewed:
Line: 3
Char: 1619
Error: Object Required

If I use another computer that sits in the same room with the same Operation System and Internet explorer this "Error on Page" does not occur.

I have searched all over for a solution and best I can tell this might be a missing JAVA Script.

If this is the case can you please let me know what script/object/file/application etc. is missing or requires an update and/or download?

Thanks for your time help and advice!!!

Very Slow dial-up but have tried cellular broadband which works only marginally better. The broadband in fact would be roughly the speed of what dial-up used to be on Windows 95 many years ago, I used to watch short videos then but cannot even do audio clips now unless I download them first. Some web pages and parts of many others will not load at all regardless of reloading many times. Tried Firefox, Opera and several different modems.

Computer -Win 7 64bit 4 core Compaq 4gig ram 3Ghz processor. All updates. Reinstalling Windows on a NEW HD made no difference and as a test I went on line with nothing on the HD not even the (AVG) antivirus, made zero describable difference. I ran a few checks on the computer hardware and everything was OK, have also had the telephone co. check the lines and I even Changed ISP's. Any driver update attempts has always indicated the best driver is already installed.

Two things I would really really really like to know for sure -
(A) Why will a page often fail to load regardless of how much time you give it and then display INSTANTLY after you give up and disconnect?
(B) I read of some setting a while back which was supposed to make a page attempt reload 10 times and tried it but it didn't help one byte. .... So..... is there some utility available that will DISABLE the the error message "This page can't be displayed" (and perhaps a few other assorted excuses) and reload the page AUTOMATICALLY as many times..... and f... Hey There,

Was just hoping someone knows wtf is going on here-

Some .chm files, when I try to read them with the default winXP .chm viewer, display the standard Internet Explorer "The page cannot be displayed" error page in the viewing pane. The table of contents is visible, however, just not the page data.

Now, if I copy the same .chm file to my desktop, it opens fine!

This only happens with some of my .chm files, although it is always the same ones- and they always work when I copy them to the desktop, just not when they are in the folders I keep them in.

The data is there, it just can't be accessed for some reason (if I use a .chm 'decoder' to decode the .chm files to .htm format, they work fine; however I don't want to have to mess with a hundred different .htm files just to read a book)

BTW, I have tried changing the filenames with no avail.

If anyone has solved this problem or has any suggestions I would be greatly appreciative.

Hi, everyone. Just found this website, and it looks like it will hopefully be helpful. Here's my problem:

I am unable to access a specific website: www.edline.net. I receive an error message stating that this page cannot be displaye (as if the site doesn't exist). However, on other computers, the page appears fine.

I have Norton Internet Security installed w/parental controls (haven't gotten a chance to try turning them off; don't know if this could be the problem). I'm thinking that maybe the oversensative parental controls are blocking the site, but can anyone think of what else could be causing this problem?

I only get the message when I go to www.edline.com. Other websites work fine.

Thanks for your help, everyone!

Hi TechGuy,

I'm having some recent problems on my laptop. When I log-in and start using it, the performance starts slowing down. When I look at the Task Manager, I notice that the task called Explorer.exe takes up a lot of my CPU. In a couple of minutes, I also start getting Internet Explorer windows to pop-up on my screen (I normally use Firefox) with advertisements suggesting that my computer is infected and some software downloads that could help. I recently installed McAfee Total Works, or whatever they call their 10-in-1 software which is supposed to do it all. I ran several scans, and on some of them, if did find and disable the Generic.dx trojan. Even though it claims it is doing something, I don't notice any changes - Explorer.exe continues to bog me down, and the IE windows keep popping up to the point that I cannot use my computer effectively anymore.

IBM T-40 laptop (about three and a half years old)
Microsoft XP-Professional

Any pointers would be truly appreciated!!

Okay, I'll try to explain this as best I can as I'm posting this for my husband. He is on a business trip in SE Asia (India, Korea, Taiwan) and while in India he picked up a virus. It's been cleared but he continues to have this problem with IE7...
He's able to open it and do a little reading or get his email, but after about 5 minutes he only gets the "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error and is unable to open any new tabs or windows, no links work, etc. (he then has to reboot to get it back). He's cleared files (history, cookies, temp files, etc.) using Internet Options and Explore, disabled add-ons, enabled & disabled pop-ups, etc., all to no avail. He's even tried using it in safe mode but the same problems occur. He was able to download HJT which got rid of hggff.dll (Vundo?). He said he would try to email the hjt.log file tomorrow morning (tonight EST) and I will post it, if this will help to decipher the problem. Meanwhile, if anyone has a suggestion of what else to try I (and he) would greatly appreciate it!
He is using a Dell D610 laptop running XP-Pro on a VPN (required to get his emails from work).

For the last few months, and lately progressively worse, whenever I get on my laptop to browse the web, it takes me a long time because I keep getting the error "Connection has timed out". I get this error no matter what browser I use. I am connecting to a home wireless network. The roommates are not having any issues. When mine times out, theirs is working fine. I tried connecting to the network with a usb and plugging in, and got the same errors. I can browse the web, but usually only for about a minute and then it won't work. I have to wait a few minutes and try again. I am about to try reloading windows and backed up all my files, but I don't want to have to do this if there is something I am missing. My laptop is an ASUS U52F, using Windows 7 64 bit. Please help!

I have been experiencing the "page can't be displayed" when clicking on some links in IE 11 or sometimes I get the error message within a page. This happens only in IE, not in Firefox. I received an email newsletter and when I move my mouse over the link, at the bottom of the page it shows the link as:

If I set IE as my default browser and click the link it fails to expand and bring up the web page. In the web address bar, it shows the above link. However, if I set Firefox as my default browser and I click on the link, it goes through and brings up the page and has the follow address:

http://www.scottevest.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=sev&Category_Code=sev_collection_sale&utm_campaign=kim_komando_0 7_25_14

I suspect the link is a shorted substitute link like "tiny url" or similar using Google. What is preventing IE from going to the web site like Firefox does?

Hi i am in need of urgent assistance with Internet Explorer. When i went on to my lap top i it told me that i had spyware and needed a program in order to detect and remove it. I didn't have a spyware program on my lap top at the time so i did a search in Google for "spyware remover". When i did this i went to this link:
That site has an online spyware scan that's supposed to detect and remove spyware. I did this scan on my lap top and it told me that i needed to delete certain files that contained spyware. So, naturally i agreed for the program off that site to do it for me. However, ever since i did this every website i go to on Internet Explorer comes up with the message "Page cannot be displayed"(i am currently using another machine). When i open my web browser, at the bottom it has a link to the file SHDOCLC.DLL so i have a feeling that this file is corrupt which is causing webpages to not come up. If ANYONE can help me with this problem it would be much appreciated. I hope someone out there has read all that and can help me! Thanks heaps.

A:"Page cannot be displayed" Error

Hi mickol25,

had a quick google search about the file you refer to here, have a read, I don't think however that is your only problem. Have you got HijackThis? If not, download from the link I'll leave at the bottom and save it into it's own directory on your C:\ (hard disk) drive because you'll need to save some log files on it. Read the help file with it and run a scan and post your log back on here where someone will evaluate it and give you advice. After you have run the scan do NOT 'fix' anything, just save the log and post it. You will have to run another later and fix the problems.
Good luck

I have no idea how I can research into this, since nothing in the window seems to be search-friendly. So I registered here to see what you experts and can figure out, or perhaps even that you can help solve it.

IE 6, XP Professional. When inside various websites the Page Can't Be Displayed message comes up about 50% of the time I try to move w/in the page. Went to LAN settings but since I don't know what the hell I'm doing I may have made it worse by clicking 'detect settings'.
Also, computer, at all levels is running very slow. Adware SE shows no spyware. McAfee shows no virus' and my speedtest for the DSL is OK. Any ideas for a non-tech guy (I don't even know how to run the reg/tests that show system status.

Recently I've been having a problem with the Internet.

I am connected to a wireless WEP network using a TrendNet wireless adapter running Win 7. The Internet will stop working for some unknown reason only on my PC that uses this wireless adapter, but just web browsing stops working. Skype and Torrent still works. On my MacBook the Internet will still work during these periods. What seems to be the problem and how do I fix it?

A:Internet Browsing Stops Working Intermittently

Most likely heavy bandwith internet usage from torrent or possible infection. WEP is also an old security encryption, interference is another or a faulty adapter.

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

everytime i go to a new page in IE I am getting a "the page cannot be displayed" message before the page loads. Sometimes it's only for a few seconds, but sometimes much longer, or the page does not load at all and I have to re-open the page. The address at the top of the page is: "www.ads234.com/adview.aspx? . . ." Sometimes the problem goes away for a few minutes after running spybot. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Just wondering.....
Very frequently when I'm moving around online I will get the classic page reading "The page cannot be displayed" bla bla bla.....
Sometimes when searching for a site I know exists.
Sometimes after I have inputed some info on an online form & submit it.
Moving from one page to the next in both large & small web sites.
Not a big deal most of the time but it bugs me!
Does anybody out there have any ideas how to prevent this without lowering my protection level too far?
I'm currently using the following (w/ XP&SP2 using IE) & probably more....
LavaSoft Ad-Aware
Spybot Search & Destroy
etc. etc.

On a side note this forum is amazing.
I have only posted a few times but reading what is going on is really helpfull.
THANKS in advance !

A:""The page cannot be displayed"" EEERRRGGG

That happens to me from time to time too. It's usually due to packet loss. Frozen pages too (where it begins to load and goes stagnant). Go back and try it again and it often works.

It has been a few weeks ago since I got this error, and comes up regularly and randomly while I am browsing the internet (with Google Chrome). I suspected this was due to installing the AVG virus, but was proven wrong after uninstalling and replacing it with Avast. I am not completely sure browsing the internet absolutely causes the BSOD, however.

If it helps I also use a TP-LINK wireless dongle to connect to the internet. I can provide more relevant information if needed.

Thank you for listening.

Does anyone know why "send page by email" is greyed out in Internet Explorer 8?

This add-on is installed and enabled in IE 8, but it still will not work.

I normally use Firefox and even though I read a few bad reviews about it's ?Email the Web? add-on, I went ahead and installed it because there is no alternative now for the newest update for Firefox because the "Send Page by Email" Firefox add-on isn't yet compatible with the newest 3.6.12 Firefox update... it appears that I'll have to install Safari to use the built-in send page by email feature.

Though Internet Explorer 8 comes with a "send page by email" add-on pre-installed, it does not seem work anymore... even though it?s "send page by email" add-on is enabled, the option is still grayed-out and inaccessible under ?file?.

The ?Email the Web? add-on for Firefox installs and has a nice interface button, as well as the file menu choice, but that?s where the good things end and the problems start. The initial interface is a bit cumbersome, then it takes me to a webpage to log-in to a Google account, and if I don?t already have a Google account, I have to jump through all the hoops to create one, then I must be logged in to that anytime I want to send a webpage by email, then instead of working with my default email app, I need to enter email addresses manually unless I have a gmail account to import addresses from... then after the 10 minutes that it takes to get thr... You can use these free tools to see if they find anything,
Manually Update them before running full scans,
Try not to use your computer while the scans are running, (one at a time of course).
See this tutorial on how to download and run Malwarebytes,
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free
Also use the Custom scan option not the Threat scan,

Please Do Not clean/ Delete or Remove Any detections before posting the scan results first before review especially Malwarebytes,

I've already tried the "fix", and it works.

A:"Fix" For Google Page Issues In Internet Explorer 11

The actual source, fwiw, is
But. I had the problem. Simplest permanent solution for me was to change my opening (home) page from google to Bing home page. But, after MS broadcast there message that it had been fixed, I returned to Google home page, and, indeed, it has been fixed. Deduction for me, therefore, was that it was an error on Microsoft's side and not, as they suggested, on Google's.

Somehow the page that I get after clicking Internet Explorer from my desktop has changed- and I can't change it to something else.

My original start page was http://www.att.net, but now it tries to open http://www.worldnet.att.net (which is a non-existent/invalid web page address- although it should be noted that the word "worldnet" IS used in their email address, which I have).

I have tried to change it using the process of- Tools/Internet Options/(desired page address)/Apply/OK - but without success.

When I try this process, it appears to take my new page, but when I check to verify the new start page (by Tools/Options again or by simply launching IE from my desktop), the old/bad address reappears/is still there.

The "start page" problem began after installing software for DSL service (Bell South Fast Access). I had previously used AT&T Worldnet Dial Up.

My computer experience is at a beginner level, but I know that messing with the registry can cause major problems or worse...

...but FYI, I did try (with GREAT uneasiness) the following in the Registry:
Start>Run, type in regedit> OK then
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\

The Start Page was listed as http://www.worldnet.att.net/

I tried to change it to http://www.att.net by Right Clicking on Start Page name, Modify. Then in the Edit String window, delete the h... Read more

Information: Dell XPS 410, Win XP Home SP-3, IE 8. I successfully removed the "Security Tool" Malaware program and recovered my display properties, but now every time I boot the machine, a popup titled "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page" appears. It does not appear to be directly related to IE. When I close the screen, everything functions properly. Internet Explorer works smothly without a hitch.

I have run HJT, Malawarebytes, AD-Aware, AVG, and Housecall. Managed to find registry keys and remove them as well as program files related to the malaware. Altering msconfig didn't help, so I'm assuming there is a well-hidden .dll file somewhere.

Short of wiping and reloading the machine, I'm at my wits' end here. I actually tried to do a repair overlay, but the machine blue-screens at a certain point. I suspect this is due to the raid controller.

Suggestions are welcome.

I've recently installed a USB wireless adapter on my computer, however the internet is not working proberly on it:

the only time the internet will work is if I open Windows Internet Explorer, or MSN Messanger.

If I type an address in the address window of a windows folder I get the message "Internet Explorer could not open the search page".
All the other programs that I've used to try to access the internet with just don't detect the connection.

My roomates are connected to the same router, and there connection is working fine.

I've also disabled windows firewall, so there is no firewall running on my computer.

I've tried changing many settings in Windows to fix this problem, but nothing seems to work.

Hey everyone,
I am trying to get the REST queries to work with the sharepoint end points instead of graph end points. I first created an app with relevant permissions and have given it the admin consent. Then I am hitting the https://login.microsoftonline.com/<tenant>.onmicrosoft.com/oauth2/token?Content-Type=application/x-www-form-urlencoded end
point with https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com as resource. I am then using the access token retrieved to give the rest call to https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com/_api/v2.0/drives/b!3indYSbqZ0-hVSPnCgIZy-2xDMh7jH9AuQnEzJMc6TEfQoSJvJT-R6tT0lFBQiPr/root/delta
but it is failing with "error":{"code":"generalException","message":"General exception while processing"}}. The REST response code is 401 Unauthorized. I have filed a Microsoft support ticket but they
have asked me to post on these forms. Can someone please help me with this? I am not able to move forward because the error is pretty generic and doesn't give any additional details.

I had a virus on my system and removed it, While walking through fix with service provider they had me uninstall AVG anti virus so I lost name of virus. Have installed new Anti virus and have run the following utilities. Malwarebytes - found 4 errors and fixed. SpyBot - found 1 item. Addaware - found 1 item and removed.

Issue is I can not load IE explorer under Main User name or Firefox ( error on firefox is Proxy server error). IE continually gives me page display error. It will allow me to load any page that requires username and password but will not load them once you enter data. I have cleared Temp Int files and reset to default on all security settings. Have also tried shutting off firewall and antivirus and tried loading several times. Also I have tried Microsoft methods to repair and it still will not work. I have upgraded from IE 6 to 7 hoping that would help, but did same thing.

The weird part is if I switch to my backup user whether its Admin or not it allows me to use IE and Firefox under other user. I was having an issue accessing any website with username and password but have somehow fixed that by doing several resets.

I am at a loss please help. Can't seem to find any solution and don't want to have to lose data and files to re-load computer. Thanks.
