Zoom Ratio - Windows 8.1

Q: Zoom Ratio - Windows 8.1

Does anyone know how to manipulate the modern UI zoom feature in windows 8.1 ? This either by script or by regkeys?

Some more details about the problem I have :
14"laptop with Full HD monitor (1080p) -> windows decides that de default zoom behaviour should be 150%...

Now I have found how to counter it in the desktop and desktop Application (add regkey : DesktopDPIOverride) there I can set the value to -2 and it will be 100% zoom and the user can still change it.
Now the ModernUI and Lockscreen (not start screen) don't follow this zoom. To change this you need to go to pc settings - pc and device - display. and there at the bottom you can change the zoom from default to smaller. What I would like is to modify this
behaviour so that the default becomes what It should be small. (the default value it has when you have a 700p pannel of the same size)
This is quite urgent and I hope someone got an answer on this... I hate how windows forces a laptop to look like a tablet :/
Thank you !

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Right now I am quite torn between a Dell Ultrasharp 23" and Ultrasharp 24" monitor. The 23 has an aspect ratio of 16:9 and the 24 is 16:10. I like the idea of extra vertical space very much, and my instincts pull me strongly toward the 24", however I have read everywhere that manufacturers are "moving away from" the 16:10 ratio and are no longer manufacturing them in favor of the 16:9. I am not sure why this worries me, but for some vague unexplained reason, it does. My primary use is general web surfing, although I do play games on a light to moderate basis.

This post is my last point of investigation before I order one, and right now I'm leaning toward the 24 as I mentioned above.
What are the pros and cons here?

A:I am torn between a 23" (16:9 ratio) and a 24" (16:10 ratio) monitor. Advice please?

The 16:10 is ok for gaming and general use but you will probably
find that it is not true HD resoltion and may or may not be HDCP
compatable for HD video and movies.
Depends on the model.
16:9 is the proper ratio for full screen HD video playback at 1920X1080 resolution.
Either is fine, but you may end up with black bars or stretched video on video playback
with the 24"

I am using the Windows 7 DVD Maker tool, and am experiencing some MAJOR issues.  I have a widescreen formatted AVI file I am trying to burn onto a DVD.  When I import the video, it doesn't matter which aspect ratio I choose the finished DVD is the same.  Menu shows video correctly, but the movie part is squeezed into a 4:3 with black bars on all four sides.  I have wasted several DVDs attempting to use multiple configurations within DVD Maker and none have been successful.  None of the "related topics" have helped as half are unanswered and the others explain a method of using Movie Maker to edit the movie and import the project into DVD Maker.  Well, Windows Movie Maker projects CANNOT be imported into DVD Maker; I've tried.  It throws a "Unsupported file type" error and cannot be imported.  Furthermore, when I try and save it as a file from Movie Maker, it gives me an error saying that the DVD won't hold my movie length, when I know it will, and doesn't do anything to help.  I would really like to get this to work, because it appears to be an integral part of the functionality of DVD Maker and I do not want to waste any more DVDs. Thanks,

Hi, I am using windows media player 10, on a windows XP home SP2.
When I try playing a video, which should be in ratio of 16:9, it converts it
to 4:3. I know that it is just windows media player, as another video
viewer(Acer Arcade) puts it in 16:9, which plays it well. Can I sort this out and
if so, how? I have tried searching through the settings on WMP, but can't
find the settings for the aspect ratio.

A:Windows media player 10 - Aspect ratio.

If you go to Tools -> Options -> Device, select Display, and then use the slider and/or the horizontal pixels per vertical pixel control in the Display Properties dialog box to adjust the pixel aspect ratio for the videos that you play in the Player, would that help you achieve what you want?
(Use the slider to perform a coarse adjustment, and then use the control to fine-tune the adjustment.)

I am trying to take some videos off of my harddrive and burn them onto DVD. The problem is that whenever the video is originally in widescreen format, the resulting version when I play it on my DVD player and watch it on my widescreen TV is that the image is squeezed and I have black bars on the sides. This is when I have the TV set for full mode. When I set it for regular mode, the image is even more squeezed.

When I convert a video that is originally not widescreen, there is no issue. I put the TV in regular mode and there is no distortion.

It doesn't seem to matter if I set the aspect ratio to 16:9 or 4:3. The result is the same.

This problem doesn't come up when viewing the menu, or samples from the video in the menu. No black bars or distortion then. It only appears when I click on play and watch the video.

Pretty much all the video files I have been burning to DVD are avi files.

Strangely enough, one widescreen video turned out fine. It was also an avi file. I have no idea what I did right on that one.

I've checked out the help files that come with Vista but I see nothing addressing my problem.

My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium and I have an AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ (2 CPUs), ~2.5GHz

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm hoping someone can help me with this problem. I used to be able to watch DVD's using Windows Media Player Ver. 11 with no problem. However, lately something has changed and anytime I attempt to watch a DVD the image is zoomed in and the right-side portion of the image is cut off. I've tried zooming out in WMP 11, updated my Nvidia 6200 drivers, checked my display settings and the resolution on my monitor, nothing seems to work. I'm not even sure if it is an overscan or an aspect ratio issue, just a guess on my part. I also noticed that this is starting to occur on some web-based embedded videos. Leading me to believe it might not be a WMP issue. I did d/l Cyberlink PowerDVD ver. 10 which doesn't have this issue (although its the trial version) If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there

I was previously running Windows Vista and everything was fine with my videos then. But I'm back on XP now and for some reason all of my MPEG-1 video files play in the wrong aspect ratio.

I am very confused at why this is happening because they played fine when I had Vista. It's the same video files and I'm using the same laptop. The only change is that I'm using XP now.

The video files I'm experiencing problems with are in the 4:3 ratio. When I played them on Vista I had two big black lines on both sides because my laptop is widescreen, and it looked good like this.

But now for some reason Windows XP is forcing the video to be stretched to fit the whole of my screen and this is deteriating the quality of the video. I came across a page on the Microsoft website that I thought would help me. Here's the link.
I was running XP service pack 2, and that page states that if you upgrade to service pack 3 it will fix. Well I'm using SP3 now but the videos are still being stretched to fit my screen.

Can somebody help me with this please?

Thanks to anyone who replies.

A:Why do my mpeg-1 video files play in the wrong aspect ratio in windows xp?

Yeah that's a pretty well know bug in the video encoding/codecs/players etc. There are a ton of fixes but none really ever seemed to work for most people. The only two things that seemed to work where converting the video with a program to set the aspect ratio in the video file or use a differnt player where you can actually set the aspect ratio like VLC. Most videos are avis now (divx and mp3), better quaility and lower file sizes.

I'm running a Toshiba 1905-S301 laptop (2 gig speed, 1 gig mem, 300 gig hd) with Windows 7 (32 bit) I thought I'd try the Zoom 4411 wireless-n USB adapter. It works great and I have the advertised transfer speed (54) for using on a USB 1.1 port.

My problem happens when I shut down Windows when the adapter is plugged in. A few seconds after the normal shutdown sequence begins I get a blue screen showing a system minidump. It never goes into shutdown, but instead reboots and brings up Windows 7 again with the failure noted as an unexpected shutdown sequence. If I pull the adapter and then go for a shutdown the process takes longer than usual (over a minute vice 15 seconds), but it eventually completes the shutdown and doesn't reboot on its own. Nothing appears to not work after the reboot and I can reacquire a network connection with the Zoom device any time I want.

Booting and shutting down with the adapter never installed is normal. An interesting failure, but one I'd like to eliminate.

I heard that Windows 8 includes a new feature called Semantic zoom. Is it possible to play with this feature if I install Windows 8 Ultimate and by using mouse keys.

I want to know whether this zoom feature only works with touch devices.

A:Semantic zoom in Windows 8

Hello Windowsguy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Not sure mouse keys would work with Semantic Zoom.

The Semantic Zoom interaction is performed with the pinch and stretch gestures (moving the fingers farther apart zooms in and moving them closer together zooms out), or by holding the Ctrl key down while scrolling the mouse scroll wheel, or by holding the Ctrl key down (with the Shift key, if no numeric keypad is available) and pressing the plus (+) or minus (-) key.

If you like, the links below can help give more details and information about Semantic Zoom.

Last night, somehow my zoom was changed. My start menu used to have only about 4 rows and now there are six rows and the tiles are now all much smaller. Generally everything is smaller and a new registry entry has appeared in

Called 'Layout_MaximumAvailibleHeightCells' with a hexadecimal value of 6. I know this is something to do with my problem as I have seen a few tutorials on changing the amount of rows. If I change it, it reverts back to 6 again when I log in to my account. I have tried changing the resolution, but it was the same before the sizes changed and as I have Eyefinity I can't put it down as that would make it repeat on all three screens, and the resolution is at its maximum. It is not to do with the 'Change the size of all items'. It applies the login screen as well.

TL;DR Everything is smaller, and nothing to do with resolution/accessibility, nor the AMD Catalyst Control Panel.

Hi (and welcome to the forums)

Why not try a run of System Restore? It usually works fairly well for getting settings back to previous values, and it doesn't bother your personal files.

The steps below are for computers running any version of Windows 8 except Windows 8 RT (which mostly is used on the Microsoft tablets called "Surface" ... ["Surface Pro" tablets run Windows 8 Pro]. System Restore isn't available for Windows RT.

I'll assume that your computer isn't running Windows RT, and is running Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro.

To restore your PC using System Restore

1. From a touchscreen, swipe in from the right edge of the screen to produce the "charms" bar, and then tap the Search magnifying glass icon. (Or, if you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down to produce the "charms" bar, and then click Search.) Enter Recovery in the search box, tap or click Settings, and then tap or click Recovery.

2. Tap or click Open System Restore, and follow the prompts. Pick a restore point from before the unwanted changes.

If the changes came about without any action on your part, you might also want to scan for malware, as its presence can cause all sorts of unpredictable behavior. Check in Device Manager, too, in case you might have a device (especially your display or graphics/video card) whose driver is generic rather tha... Read more

OK, I've checked the other threads re: Zoom Browser and have tried all the tricks and ideas, but no success. First I kept getting an error message about not being registered and now it's the wrong string or something. I've d/l'ed the newest version and it DOES NOT work. Shut down my firewall: no success. I've cleaned out my registry, clean boot, more uninstalls and re-installs and looked on line for more fixes. Even tried my other programs to see if anything else didn't work. Nope! EVERYTHING else is fine! Also, all of Canon's answers I checked into don't work. And I've also seen that I'm not the only one.

I have NO idea what the problem could be. It DID work fine until I received the latest MS updates. This is my first post, so please allow me to first express my appreciation for the fact that this forum exists, and for all those of you who participate in it for your willingness to share your knowledge.

I am putting together a new machine. Below are the specs:

AMD Approved Case w/400W PS
Jetway 867AS mobo w/ VIA VT8366/VT8233 KT-266 Chipset
AMD Athlon XP 1700 w/ThermalTake Volcano 7 CPU Cooler
512 MB PC2100 DDR
60 Gig IBM Deskstar HDD
ATI Radeon 9000 Atlantis 64 MB DDR AGP VIVO Video Card

After carefully assembling everything, I pressed the power button and the fans all work but the system will not POST. I have read through, and tried, all the suggestions I could find on this website but find no solution to my problem. I do lack understanding in one matter: How does one determine CPU Ratio? This may be my problem but I'm not sure. Thanks in advance for your help.
To AcaCandy: All that and brains too! my my my. Saludos

A:CPU Ratio

Hello guys,
I have tried to find a solution to my problem through google, but have not found any, just similar cases which were not suitable for my problem.
So, I have ultrabook with Windows 7 (Intel HD 4000 / nVidia GT 620m). I installed some old games with low resolution (620x480; 800x600 ...) and it worked fine - system kept aspect ratio and created black bars when needed, so game looked normal. About a week ago for some to me unknown reason it began to change it. Every game is widened now and looks "fat". Even when I change resolution and settings in game that allows it, the screen is widened anyway. My graphic control systems seem to be "cut" - they dont have any option to "keep aspect ration" or so. control panel neither. I did not instal any updates or new drivers, so I do not know what exactly happen. Any clues would be really appreciated.

I just set up my new computer put don't understand the cpu clock ratio thing in bios. I am running a 2.53 p4 with 533 bus and pc 2700 ddr. My board has bus at 133mhz which times 4 would work. My ddr was at 133 which I change to 166 which times 2 will work. It has my cpu clock ratio set at 8x gives me the option of going from 8 to 50 which would that be? Thanks all hope you can help me.
