Preferred Solution: Unable to open/save email attachments

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I try to open an email attachment, it goes directly to SAVE, then I have to save it before I can open the attachment. Result: I have a mess of unwanted SAVED attachments.

Would appreciate any assistance you can give me to get my email going to OPEN immediately and not to SAVE.

Many thanks for your support.

When I receive an e-mail with any attachments I cannot open, print or save them. When I highlight the attachment and double click nothing happens. Right click, choose open - nothing happens. Choose "save as", box opens to save the document into a folder of your choice with the "Save as type" showing Attachment(*.*). Press "save", an error message of "The command failed to execute" pops up. Choose print nothing happens.
I am unable to view any attachments on online e-mail.
I have also found that if I try to download documents or programmes from web sites, it seems to go through all the correct processes but doent appear in the folder I asked it to save in and I cannot find it on the computer anywhere.

This has been ongoing for a while but dont know exactly when, as I dont get many attachments.
Updates switched off
I run AVG - recently unloaded and reloaded/updated.
IE 8
32 bit
Dual core
Use BT Infinity - recently rebooted.
Have run AVG, Malwarebytes in safe mode, CC cleaner. Tried the solutions on microsoft site.
I have been working on this for a couple of days to no avail.
Has anybody had the same problem?

I am using windows 98 with IE and outlook express 5.5. Some of my email attachments started coming in with an icon (too small to read) in a box beside the name of the attachmenton the attach line. I am unable to open these. When I click on them to open, it takes me right back to outlook express. These do not all come from the same sender. I can forward these to others and they receive them with the normal white envelope with the open flap and name of attachment in the attach line and are able to open them. Some of my attachments come in fine and I am able to open those. This just recently started happening and I have no clue as to why. Do you know what this maybe and how to correct it? Thank You tlh99

It depends what type of file it is. You may not have an application installed that is required to open that type of file. Please post what type of file it is (the three letters after the full-stop in the filename), or read this for guidance: This file does not have a program associated with it - what does this mean and what do I do?

Have him go to Tools-Options-General tab. Make sure "Ignore other applications" is NOT checkmarked.

If that doesn't work, close Excel, then Start-Run and type:

excel.exe /regserver

You may need to include the path to the exe. Let me know if that doesn't work either.

I'm hoping someone will be able to help.

I have Vista and install all Microsoft updates regularly on my home computer.

However, whenever I receive an email attachment .docx, pptx, & so on I am unable to access the file. It saves as a WinRAR file (zipped, in other words) and when I attempt to unzip it, I just get blank files.

My email is on a university server. When I access attached files from my work computer, they are fine. I only have the problem when I try to access the files from home. As you can imagine, most files these days are .docx, so it is quite frustrating.

Can anyone help me solve this ?

Had a virus on my computer which appears to be gone. Now, I still can't save or download attachments. I click on an attachments, say that I either want to save or open it and...

A window opens called something like msworddft.name. It says 'You downloaded Free Downloads Accelerator from Free Downloads Center.' It looks like it is trying to find the file, then...

'Requested file not found on the server. Download stopped.' Then a line of gobbleygook.

Other, perhaps unrelated problems I am having (and posted in another forum) are that everytime I bring up word and printshop (and maybe excel) a window comes up saying 'Installing WIndows Installer'.

Hello, I used to use Outlook Express and had NO probs right clicking an attachment and saving the file (what ever the attachment was) to any folder on my PC.

With Windows7-Outlook 2007 I can only right click and 'copy', then past into a Word document or 'Paint', etc.

I CAN'T 'Save' the attachment to another file (like 'My Photos'), etc.

When I click the attachment and click File, 'Save' is faded out and not accessible.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is? I've NEVER been able to 'Save' an attachment, no matter what it is since starting Windows7 with Outlook7 and it's SO frustrating! It would be GREAT if I could watch animated .gifs in Outlook 2007 too but that's a problem for another day. Oh how I HATE Outlook7!

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm using Eudora for email and thinking of migrating to Outlook.
One thing I like about Eudora is that I can specify the folder where all email attachments get stored. I receive alot of documents and like to index this folder with DTSEARCH (dtsearch.com) so that I can quickly search all my docs. With Outlook this does not seem possible as it seems to save all attachments to a temp folder and then you manually need to right click the attachment and then SAVE TO a specific folder.

Is there a way I can specify the defualt folder path for all my email attachments in Outlook?

Hello Group,
Rather despondent now, yet another annoying and bizarro problem has suddenly developed on my Windows XP PC in Outlook.
I cannot open or save any attachments to my e-mails. When I open an e-mail with attachments an error message pops up:
"Could not open one or more attachments" and it then opens the e-mail but does not show the usual attachment icon(s)
Then I discover that I am unable to attach any files to my outgoing e-mails! When I try to attach a file to an outgoing e-mail, another Outlook error msg pops up:
"Can't create file. right click the folder ... and check Properties for permissions for the folder"
What's going on? How did this suddenly happen?
Hope someone can help ...
Thanks for looking.

A:Can't Open or Save e-mail attachments!

I googled on this problem and found many recommendations relating to Security:
Tools>Options>Security and allowing the saving of any attachments
but this did not stop my problem, and furthermore, I cannot attach any files to outgoing e-mails.

I have a rather strange problem on a user at work's pc.
If he clicks file>save attachments and chooses any directory an error appears: "The file name is not valid".

I tried giving other names eg file.doc, test.doc.

Nothing worked. I can drag and drop the attachments to a directory, that works fine?!

I suddenly found that my laptop would no longer let me open or save any attachments in either gmail or hotmail.

I get a message that says 'What do you want to do with 'GetAttachment...' followed by a huge string of numbers / symbols that bear no resemblance to the document name. (Usually, the documents i'm trying to save or download are .doc or .docx documents.)

When I click save, save as, or open, nothing happens. Usually there is no failure message, no timer - just nothing at all.

I have tried updating my edition of Microsoft Office. This made no difference. I have also run a virus scan, which revealed nothing. I have cleared my temporary internet history and cookies. And I haven't, to my knowledge, changed any settings on the computer that would prevent attachments from being downloaded.

If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful!

My laptop is 3 years old and can be a little temperamental but this is its only serious regular malfunction. I'm looking at replacing it if I can't solve this as it makes it unusable for what I need it for!

Hi All,
I have a Windows XP Pro machine with Outlook Express 6 as a mail client and Open Office 2.3 associated with all MS office file types.

When I attempt to launch an attachment, a .doc for instance, from Outlook Express it says ?unknown file type? under the name of the file and clicking open does nothing. If instead I select ?save attachments? and save the same file to the hard drive and then double click on it, it launches Open Office and the file is displayed, without any trouble.

?Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus?, under the the ?Security? tab is unchecked.

Any ideas?

I can't open most (not all) attachments in Outlook Expres 6.0. If I try to open an attachment, OE freezes for a few seconds then just ignores the request and if I try to save the attachments, I get the message "There was an error saving one or more of the attachments. please check your free disk spaces and try again. However, I have 26.7GB free disk space available on my C drive. If I try to forward these emails to another address, I also get an error after about 20 seconds saying "The message could not be sent. An error has occurred".

I have followed another thread on this website, which said to uncheck the 'Options/Security/Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus' but that has made no difference.

After having tried to save these attachments (some .doc, .pdf, .zip) an empty file with that name appears on my C drive.

If I open the actual email and then double click on the attachment, I get a different error "The command failed to execute"

Please help me as I desperately need to access these attchments.

I see lots of posts about file size issues with email attachments but not this particular problem. I have a 572KB zip file that I cannot mail to my colleagues. I get no error message, it is not returned, and it just never goes through. We all three use different ISPs. I can successfully email a 350KB zip file to either of them. They both tested and can receive zip files from others that are much larger than 572KB. I tested and can email the attachment to myself at either my Roadrunner address or my Yahoo address and it goes through fine. The problem has to be on my end. But if I can email it out to my Yahoo address, why on earth can't I email it to them?

I have disabled Norton Antivirus and turned off the WinXP Firewall, but that doesn't help. I do have a Lynksys router installed. Could that possibly be a problem?

If I'm on the wrong forum I apologize. I just can't think what else it could be except some weird XP thing. Any suggestion as to how I might find the source of this problem--or where else I should ask--would be greatly appreciated. Really! Been working with this for 2 very frustrating weeks!
