Strange occurence in properties window

Q: Strange occurence in properties window

Hello. I have noticed a strange fact regarding my windows 7 32 bit operating system. When I delete some files in a folder, then go to properties, when i look at "Contains", it still shows the number of files i had before deletion, not the current number of files in that folder. Is there a way to repair this? Thanks in advance! (rebooted my pc, but with no success, if it is to mention)

Preferred Solution: Strange occurence in properties window

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Strange occurence in properties window

Did you empty the Recycle Bin?

I don't see a "Contains" choice in any folder property menu. Can you tell me how you get to it, as following the directions you gave does not show it for me.

Maybe post a screen shot of it? Make sure the window you want to capture has the focus.
Press Alt+Print Screen. That will capture the active window.
Print Screen will capture the entire screen, including properties dialogs.
Start MSPaint - Start then Run, type mspaint and press Enter.
Press Ctrl+v to paste the picture in to MS Paint.
Click File then Save as and save it to your Desktop.

Start a new reply.
Click on the Browse button below the message input area.
Navigate to where you saved the picture, select it and click on Open.
Click on Attach This File.
Once uploaded, click on Add To Post to the far right of the uploaded file.
Scroll down and click Preview Post to verify the image shows.

I just got a new laptop a week or so ago, and I had installed Google Chrome because that is what I usually use. I was filling out job applications, but I needed to use Internet Explorer because the site wouldn't format correctly on Google Chrome. As I went to fill out an application, it had already autofilled my answers. It even used my home address, which I rarely use (I usually put my mailing address on job applications). This was the first time I had ever used Internet Explorer on this laptop, except to download Google Chrome. Is it possible for IE to automatically autofill applications with information only used on another browser? II find it really strange that i it even used my home address, because I don't recall ever using it before that time, and that is the only job application that has ever autofilled for me. What could have caused it to do that?

Okay guys, I had something strange happen to my laptop. My Gateway laptop has Vista Home Premium OS. I started my laptop and the login window came on as usual. I put in my password like I have for months with caps lock off and entered the correct password. It responded with the computer not recognizing the password. I tried to enter into Bios and change the password in Bios and still I was not able to login. So, obviously there was some kind of problem. I tried using Hirens 12 to change the password to no avail. So, just sitting around I thought of using my Avanquest Professional Utilities 11 rescue disc. The rescue disc worked. I was able to delete the old or changed password to login. The first thing I noticed was that the security icon had changed in the bottom task bar in the lower right part of the screen. It was red and said I needed to check the security settings. Well, the antivirus was no longer there nor was the firewall. Second, I went to use the recovery system built in Vista OS and noticed I was not able to access the recovery system to go back to a previous time or do a complete recovery. So, now I am sitting here with a laptop that does not have security or a recovery system. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice to get my laptop back to working order. Everything else seems to work just fine. Thanks in advance for help.

Well the easy thing to do is see if you can download Microsoft Security Essentials from the MS website
The second thing to do is make a backup of your HD with Macrium Reflect and you will be all set.
http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp

YOu can also try to quickly fix the problem.Run a SFC scan.
and
Go to event viewer and look for errors that may have caused the problem
Then because of the nature I would make an antivirus scan first thing.
You can use the online free scan of house call
I would, also try and see if a system restore from before the problem does any good.

Had a strange occurrence last night where i loaded winamp and suddenly ping.exe kept trying to access the net (constant zonealarm popups until i set it to remember the setting) and then after I had no sound coming from my computer. So rebooted and then found that the computer will now no longer get past "Verifying DMI Pool Data" in the boot up screen.

Tried a load of stuff to get it working again, from clearing the cmos (when i did this i thought i fixed it as it did something different, only to hang again at "verifying DMI Pool Data....Update Success"), to unplugging over drives and disabling everything but HDD in the bios boot options. Even tried using /fixmbr and /fixboot from the recovery console (all drives are showing up find from there btw), but all to no avail.

Was at first thinking there was a problem with the HDD, but a chkdsk found no problems and so I tried swapping out the main HDD for another from a different system, but it wouldn't boot from that either. It either goes to a blank screen after getting past the place it was hung before, or says "A disk read error has occurred".

Any suggestions?

Did you try LKGC (Last Know Good Configuration)?

Are you able to boot from Safe mode? If yes, uninstall Winamp and check. Also, try system restore tool and let us know.

I have a user that sent this to me in an e-mail last night. I read it and don't have a clue so I thought I'd pick your brain and see if you have any thoughts on this. We use Windows XP sp2, Outlook 2003 and Exchange 2003. Everything is on the latest service packs.

"For about the last two weeks or so, when I open my computer in the morning upon arrival (it is always on, so I just turn on the display), I find a blank e-mail in my Inbox, as if it were a draft. The heading above the address section says "This message has not been sent." Yet it is in my Inbox. It is always time stamped between 9:04 and 9:08 pm. There is no content, and I have simply been deleting it everyday."

I was removing programs using Programs and Features (I forget what it's called, at the moment.) As I scrolled down the list, I saw a program called "Spiderman 3 XXXX" that I've never seen before on this computer. When I moved my mouse over it, it removed itself from the list and Spybot S&D reported that something was attempting to change in the registry. I accidentally allowed the change to be made on accident. I've scanned twice with Spybot SD but I'm still paranoid as if there's anything on the computer...Edit: I just remembered that Spybot S&D removed Virtumonde from the computer. Im having the strangest problem with connecting to the internet on dial-up and it kind of started 8 months ago but got extremely worse ever since I got an XP computer 4 days ago. For most of the day my computer cannot connect to the internet no matter how often i try and an error message #678 appears stating the remote computer did not respond. Now the strange thing is im only able to connect on line after 10 pm or early morning before 9am or so maby after 5 or 10 or more attempts compared to 50 or more during the day time with no results.

I tested my XP computer at the store where i bought it and at my parents house and it has no problem at all connecting to my internet provider at those locations. My internet provider is blaming my phone line or some other kind of interference although Bell Canada has tested my complete line and reported that it is fully functional with no problems. So my question is why is this happening?

A:STRANGE OCCURENCE with error #678 remote computer not responding

Hi, welcome to TSF

What sort of dial up - as in 56k modem?

Are there other people in the house you live who will be using the phone line, i.e. other access points in the house with phones plugged into?

Do you have any sort of additional services set up on the line, i.e. caller waiting, some sort of answering service (these can interfere).

Check the state of the access point boxes - are they damaged?

Check the above things - then I would be going back to Bell Canada to be honest and insisting there is a problem and you want them to visit you to troubleshoot further.

Are you attempting this from the Start menu? Do you have Computer display as a Menu instead of Link?

It could really only be that rightclicking on the drive is actually rightclicking Computer, in which case Properties would show the System page.

HP Media Center m7060n

Current problem is a wrong tv card driver installed by a helpful friend. Driver will not uninstall without freezing the machine.

Now it is my turn.

I have a path mapped out to fix the issue but I ran into something I cannot craft a google query that can find. I have never seen it before in windows.

Planning to do a simple file backup as well as an image backup I wanted to check the size of the users documents and settings space.

When I went to check the size of the "C:\Documents and Settings\users name" folder, I did a right click and chose properties. The usual box pops up and it starts counting up the files and folders.

It keeps counting until it starts showing absurd results. It keeps going. At aprox 115,000,000 files and 45,000 folders I close the window.

I try another directory. I close this one when it exceeds the number of megabytes in the partition.

The user has lots of files but no where near the numbers indicated. Drilling down in the directories shows only the usual suspects and the expected amount of files and folders. Mounting the drive on a live linux cd shows nothing unusual and counts the files and folders as expected.

I will do a full drive image first and make sure it can be mounted on a linux box and restored to a spare drive, but I am curious if anyone has seen this behavior before and whether it is associated with any malware or rootkits. I plan to scan it ... Read more

Hello.

I am using a Dell laptop with Windows 8 Home. The file Properties show strange symbol-type characters where there should be numbers etc. See Screenshot...

It's been like this for a while and I have probably installed half a dozen programs etc. so I don't know what did it. I don't want to upgrade to v.8.1 as it took me ages to get a 3rd party Start button set up and 8.1 over-writes it I rolled back to a previous image of v.8.0 (True Image not System Restore).

Can somebody please enlighten? Many thanks.

Did you make any changes already that did not work? Reset default system fonts? Restore Point? It saves time if the guessing game can be avoided.

It does seem strange that only the time portion of the time/date stamp is weird though.

Hey! I've just rebuilt my computer and reinstalled XP: it's gone back to the default of logging me out after 20 minutes of inactivity, and I want to change that so it doesn't log me out at all!

However, the properties window (the one you reach by right clicking on the desktop) is different to how it should be- when I first installed XP it was the normal window with the tabs for themes, desktop, screensaver, appearance and settings. However, for some reason recently all it's doing is show the tabs for themes, appearance and settings, so I can't reach the power settings that should be under the screensaver tab!

I've tried accessing power settings via the control panel, but I can't seem to find anything to turn it off or change it- any help on this one? (And any help on getting my display properties window back to how it should be, showing all the tabs?)

Thanks!

Since I am new to the forum, I'm not sure where my problem should be posted. I am also not sure if it is a hardware or software related problem, but here it is.

Suddenly, when I try to print, the print properties dialog window does not appear when i click on the properties button. It tries to activate, but immediately reverts back to the print window. This occurs in both OpenOffice 4.1.1 and LibreOffice 4.3, both of which have previously worked fine for months. I often print to both sides of the page (echo print), but can only print on one side (default) since I cannot change the properties. The only thing I can recall that might have any bearing on the problem is that I had previously printed to a file - something I rarely do. I checked the settings and "print to file" is not selected. I am printing to a HP LaserJet Pro M1530 MFP series PCL6 printer and am using Windows 8.1 operating system. I have tried reinstalling both word processing programs and have reset the printer to default settings and updated.

If anyone can help with this problem, I would greatly appreciate your help.

A:Print properties dialog window does not appear

Printers can be very frustrating to say the least. When I've had printer problems in the past, this is what has worked for me:

1. Unplug the power to the printer
2. Wait about 30 seconds or so
3. Plug it in and let it go through it's initialization
4. Then try it again

If that doesn't work, try reloading the printer driver from the HP site. If it still doesn't work, try a system restore back to the last time the printer was working successfully. That's about all the tricks I know for printers. Hope it helps ...

A:Keep Getting Ise32 Properties Window On Startup

It's not unusual to receive such an error after using tools to remove malware infection.A "Cannot find...", "Could not run...", "Error loading... or "specific module could not be found" message is usually related to malware that was set to run at startup but has been deleted. Windows is trying to load this file but cannot locate it since the file was mostly likely removed during an anti-virus or anti-malware scan. However, an associated orphaned registry entry remains and is telling Windows to load the file when you boot up. Since the file no longer exists, Windows will display an error message. You need to remove this registry entry so Windows stops searching for the file when it loads. To resolve this, download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click here if you're not sure how to do this.)Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries. When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.Right-click on the entry and choose delete.Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.IMPORTANT NOTE: ise32.exe is related to the family of worms and IRC backdoor Trojans. This morning I attempted to view the properties of one of my drive in Windows explorer. Properties is a selection on the context menu, but clicking it does absolutely nothing. I have 3 drive in my system and the same behavior is true for all of them.

To add to the mystery, properties works fine for files, directories and Computer. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium with SP1 fully patched.

Anyone have a clue on this one?

I have an external drive, Hammer "morespace" 500BG usb2, that I use in case of disaster recovery on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit desktop. Hence, I only use it occasionally; and purely for back-up purposes (active sync, User files). The properties for this drive are very strange (see attached image). They are mainly comprised of Chinese characters (for drive name, manufacturer, etc.) and a strange little cartoon character with a cape and rainbow on its head

I have had this drive for about 2 years. Further, I can't recall ever viewing the drive properties, e.g., in the My Computer window on any prior occasion. Nevertheless, these "properties" have me concerned about malware despite that windows defender, avast and malware bytes do not detect such. Has anybody seen this before? Should I be concerned? How can I change the way the all strange drive properties are displayed?

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 @ 2.80 GHz
4GB (2x2GB) OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500
NVidia GeForce 8400 GS
1.5 TB internal disc storage

A:very strange drive properties display have me concerned about malware

Sorry if this is a little late, and not very specific, but the display you're seeing is malware related. About 3 weeks ago, I had a customer's pen drive which had been provided to me to restore some backup files to a new hard drive. When I tried to stop the drive before removing it,my Windows 7 system notification area displayed the drive with a rainbow icon and a string of Chinese characters very similar to what your system properties picture shows.

I did full scans with an updated Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and NOD32, which detected and removed 1 infection. The bug detected by NOD32, was one of those generic identifications that wasn't very helpful.

So, here I am, confident you have malware on the drive, but unable to identify it or the risks it poses.

Just today I suddenly have a problem where I can't type at all at times. I can put the cursor in place, I can use the scroll bars on the sides to move up and down, but can not type in available spaces. WHen I tried left clicking it would go to "properties" on any icon/shortcut I chose. I couldn't even go to "restart" on the desktop screen the normal way. I had to shut the computer down and load everything over then use the on screen keyboard to type in my admin password.

It loaded, started typing normally then a little while later went back to the same issue. I did it again and same thing. Right now I'm using it and I see its starting to slow down and freeze while I type. (I'm seriously praying it lets me finish this inquiry) I'm using a separate keyboard because of an issue I had from a while back with the "W" key getting stuck and having to always hit "ESC" to get it to stop. I never have problems with the added keyboard and it doesn't seem to be the keyboard itself since I can't use any of the original keys on the laptop either when this happens. (I could always use most of them)

I also noticed a box in the top left would try to pop up with options like "file" when I would try to type during these times.

The only new things I can say happened on here today is an icon in the bottom right asking if I want to upgrade to Windows 10 and Firefox had a promotion for it's Foxyeah program/event.

I got some great help from this someone on this site with a nasty problem a short while ago and now I've returned with some questions about another issue.

I've tried to research this myself, but can't seem to find any answers. This problem has occured before and usually self corrects after a short time, but when it occured last night, it remained until a few minutes ago.

First of all, I'm using Windows XP, Service Pack 3. My computer is a Sony Vaio Desktop with Pentium Dual Core Processor.
Last night, when trying to bring up Mozilla Firefox by left clicking on the desk top short cut, the properties menu came up instead of the program. I tried to left click other icons on the desktop and they all did the same thing.

Furthermore, I could not use the start menu because clicking on it would just toggle the menu on and off rapidly.
At first I could right click the icons on the desk top, but then right clicking would just bring the same toggle effect as clicking on the start menu.

I tried rebooting in safe mode, but it made no difference.

It gets even stranger. After a time, the start menu stabilized and I could left click on items from the start menu and the program would come up as normal, but left clicking anything on the desktop would still bring up properties. Eventually the desktop icons stopped toggling on and off and I could also right click on them and choose open and then the programs would open. But I still couldn't left click on them.

But tha... Read more

I turned on sharing for the C drive and added an Everyone group in Security to allow access to my other computer on my network. When I go to close the Properties window I a message that says "You are about to change the permissions settings on the root directory of the startup disk which can result in unexpected access problems and reduce security. Do you want to continue?".

I answered yes and it went through all the folders and gave an access denied message on system folders. After if was done I got the same message mentioned when I tried to exit the Properties window. So I removed sharing and the Everyone group. But I'm still in the same situation. I keep going through the same loop and can not exit the Properties window.

So I have to minimize all the windows I have open to see the properties window.
The weird thing is the properties window is the only one that does that, When I open a new

Is there a way to force the properties window open in the forground...Thanks...

I have a large number of files which I am changing the naming convention for in the Title detail and am getting frustrated having to right click for properties and anvigate tabs ebfore being able to change each one. I can see the Title of the files in the Details view of the folder they are in, but there cannot find a way to edit them in that view other than the manner previosuly stated.

That being said, does anyone know of a workaround that would allow me to change each title without aving to jump through hoops to edit them?

Thanks in advance.

A:Wish to edit detail properties of files in window

Welcome to the Forums Clockwork,

So if I get it correctly you want to rename multiple files at once?
If so, go to the folder they are located in, click anywhere in the folder, hit crtl and a at the same time to select all the files and then hit F2

After that you'll see that the name banner of the first file in the folder turned empty. You can now type the name you want it to have in, and hit enter. It will change all the files to that name, followed up by a number.
Hope that that helps!

A:Window Sys32 Properties Appears On Opening

The System32 folder opens at startup because of a corrupt system registry value. The value could have been corrupted for a number of reasons to include malware or installing/uninstalling a program from the Internet which did not install/uninstall itself properly.Click on the link below:http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htmScroll down to #260 and click "System32 Folder Opens Upon Boot" in the right column. You will be prompted to download xp_systems32opens.vbs. Save the file to your desktop and double-click on it to run the script. Since the script modifies certain registry settings you may receive an alert from your anti-virus or any script blocking program. Ignore the warning and allow it to continue. The problem could also be caused by empty run entries in your startup shortcuts which will open the system32 folder. Check the startup run registry entries and remove those entries. See System32 Folder Opens When Logging on to Windows. These steps involves making changes in the registry. Always back up your registry before making any changes. If you are not familiar with working in the registry, then you should NOT attempt to make any changes on your own. Improper changes to the registry could adversely affect your computer and render it inoperable. ERUNT is an excellent FREE tool that allows you to to take a snapshot (backup) of your registry before making changes and restore it when needed.

Hello,

I have two questions that are not critical to the operation of my system but has been driving me crazy in an effort to research them to no avail. The only thing that I am pretty sure of is that it is a problem with the registry.

When I right click on a folder and then click properties, the dialog window comes up with 3 extra tabs. This happens for every folder on my computer. The extra tabs are the same tabs as the My Documents folder shortcut (Target, General, and Sharing) and the target window is C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents. This results in every folder having an extra General and Sharing tab and a Target tab with the My Documents target in it. Interestingly enough, the virtual folder that is listed in explorer for My Documents has only 3 tabs but the My Documents folder inside Documents and Settings\Owner (the actual folder itself) has the extra tabs just like every other folder.

A possibly connected problem is that the Add/Remove section of the Control Panel no longer has the install dates or useage level for most programs. The dates are in the HKLM uninstall registry keys but they are not being read for some reason.

I have been installing and uninstalling a lot of programs (mostly antivirus, antispyware, firewall, and utility programs) in an effort to clean up and speed up my computer and test a lot of different applications. This effort has been dramatically successful however I am left with these two minor but annoying is... Read more

Hi guys.

I posted this on the 'Software and Hardware' forum, but got told to try here.

This evening I went onto my Windows Vista laptop just to browse the internet when I noticed this message pop up straight after I had booted up:

I saw that it had been deleted and I have no idea why. Now, I'm not an expert at computers but I knew this wasn't good, so I clicked 'restore' and I never saw it again. However I restarted and noticed it again, but I didn't click 'restore' this time, and as I went to download a file it wouldn't download (something along the lines of: .exe couldn't be downloaded... please contact administrator)

I don't think it can be serious because as soon as I 'restore' it everything's back to normal, but it is really annoying that after every statup this pops up. Please can you help me rectify this and allow me to have a stressless time whilst browing on my laptop.

Thanks in advance.

I've used Calendar Creator 10 Deluxe for a couple of years without problems, but all of a sudden it crashes when I try to access the Properties window. This happens using both right click and the menu. The Properties window displays incompletely, and then the dialog box pops up that says "Calendar Creator has encountered a problem and needs to close."

I thought the calendar file was corrupt, so I created a new calendar. Same problem. I did a repair install. Same problem. I uninstalled, ran my reg cleaner (Advanced System Optimizer) and reinstalled. It still crashes when the Properties window comes up.

In light of that history, I suspect that the culprit may be Windows even though it only affects CC. I ran ShellEx View and could not see any handlers that came specifically from Broderbund or anything that is specifically for the .bcc file extension.

Any ideas on what could be causing this problem would be greatly appreciated.
