Corrupted keyboard drivers in XP, can't load

Q: Corrupted keyboard drivers in XP, can't load

Background -

* Computer running XP pro (native install from Dell), sp2
upgraded. Pretty standard USB keyboard, Kensington trackball (w.
Kensington software). System works fine.
* Tried to install a Wacom Graphire III tablet. This works fine
(even simultaneously with the trackball), but whenever you reboot the
system, you get a system stop, and the only thing to fix it is to go
back to a "pre Wacom" restore point. Wacom drivers updated to best off
web, no help.
* Called Wacom - they suggested that I deinstall Kensington to see
if the conflict is there. This I did, and it didn't help. When back to
the "pre-kensington deinsall" checkpoint.
* At this time the symptoms below started happening:

* The keyboard has stopped working! When you boot windows, the
keyboard (what few keys you can test) works fine, and the "num lock"
light is on. About 3/4 of the way through the Windows reboot process,
however, the green light goes off and the keyboard stops working
(entirely). For example, you can't log in, because you can't type your
password. This also happens in safe mode, I think.
* Luckily, I routinely use this machine in remote desktop mode -
so I log in remotely. All is well, except when you go into device
manager view, the keyboard shows and error. The error (#39)
explains that Windows was unable to load the drivers, because they are
corrupted or missing.

Attempted solutions:
I have tried many combinations, here are most of them:

* Look at the drivers on the system matching the names listed in
the DeviceManager. Lots of copies of each driver, seem to match in size
(although I didn't FC them).
* In Device Manager, deinstall the keyboard drivers, reboot the
machine, and let windows re-discover the keyboard. Same problem.
* Switch to a standard Dell keyboard, running off the PS-2 ports.
The same problem occurs, although in this case the DeviceManager error
changes places to standard PS-2 mouse (i.e.this is not a USB problem).
Different driver files are cited.
* Try to overwrite some of the drivers with those from another
system. The XP driver self-heal problem makes this rather difficult. I
have not tried turning this off, because somehow I doubt the drivers I
am touching are corrupt - there seem to be many keyboard drivers!
* Tried updating the drivers in deviceManger. Windows tells me no
update needed, the ones I have are current.
* Haven't done a Windows "repair", since my disks are pre-SP2, and
I expect lots of stuff will get broken. Wish there was another way. At the very least I would want to slipstream an SP2 disk.

If you have any suggestions, I would love them.
Many thanks,

Preferred Solution: Corrupted keyboard drivers in XP, can't load

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Best suggestion I can offer is to make a bootable cd with service pack 2 and then do a repair. Here's how you do it:

Is it possible for me to be able to get the drivers for my keyboard without having to restore my entire operating system? I attempted to install Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2017.  The install process failed and the Kaspersky install app claimed to back out changes it had made up to that point.  However, my keyboard and touchpad no longer worked.  Looking on the HP website, I found instructions for restoring the keyboard drivers.  I went to Device Manager, Viewed hidden devices, expanded Keyboards, uninstalled each driver listed under Keyboards, then Restarted my laptop.  The keyboard still did not work so i went back into Device Manager to look at the drivers under Keyboards again.  This time two have yellow triangle indicators with an "!" - HID Keyboard Device  and Standard PS/2 Keyboard.  When I right-click on each of thes and view the properties, I see the messages:              "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware.                  The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39).                                 {Unable to Load Device Driver}                %hs device driver could not be loaded.                Error Status was 0x%x" DetailsHID Keyboard DeviceDriver Prov... A few times over the last couple years, seemingly randomly, windows will get into a consistent state where it won't receive input from the keyboard after it starts up and is at the login screen. This will last around 30 seconds.
I have a CM Storm Quickfire TK brown keyboard, which works fine.
The mouse works. A Roccat Kone XTD.
I've tried other ports, i've tried some settings in the bios such as fastboot, usb legacy support, usb initialization, etc, but they don't help at all.

So this leads me to believe that windows just doesn't know that there's a keyboard giving it input for a while after startup. Unfortunately, I don't have another keyboard to test this.
It used to be that the keyboard's backlight would come on before the monitor would automatically display the hdmi input after the windows startup, and i could type in my password and log in within seconds after boot. When the monitor displays a few seconds later, I would already be on the desktop...

Any idea why this is occurring?

A:Keyboard (drivers?) slow to load on startup

You can check if there is a service for your keyboard with delayed automatic.
Also try uninstall and re-install keyboard software.

This problem started a couple days ago. There doesn't seem to be a user initiated trigger, as it first happened after the computer was idling for a while, and subsequent crashes/problems occurred at various times in various circumstances, all the while getting worse. I'll elaborate below, but first:HardwareMotherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3LProcessor: Q6600Memory: 2x 1GB Ballistix (on QVL)Hard Drive: 500GB Seagate 7200.11Video Card: MSI 8800GTPSU: 630W RaidmaxSoftwareOS Version: Windows XP Pro 32 bit, 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600Antivirus: NOD32Firewall: Zone AlarmThe ProblemThe computer is almost exactly two months old, and was running perfectly up until this point when, as stated, it crashed seemingly randomly and never stopped crashing since. The first error I was not around for. I came back to my computer to find it was in an infinite BSOD-reboot loop, where it would clear POST and the Windows splash screen would pop up for about three seconds followed by an instant BSOD. It probably was going on for a good 20-30 minutes before I stopped it, which I did by completely powering down the system and then restarting. When Windows loads, it pops up the message 'Windows has recovered from a serious error'. I send the error report and it says everything is unknown except that it was caused by a driver, but doesn't know which driver. I figured it must have been a random thing, because I hadn't updated any drivers since first building the computer, ... Read more

Hello to everyone here at SevenForums,
My problem begins with a file i deleted from the
System32 folder. I thought it was malicious and can't remember the name of the file either,

It freezes again until i unplug the d drive. I cant read the stats on it, cant do anything with it. I Just dont understand.
Am i stuck with a corrupted hard drive?
is there a work around?

I had to reinstall windows Vista Business on an Acer Aspire AX1200-U1640A 2GB install went well but when I tried to set up my internet, wireless did not show, I called my internet provider we tried to set it up as broadband but that didn't work either. It seems I do not have the drivers for the Ethernet Controller and other things listed under other devices see pictures in attached document. Since I do not have the internet on that computer, I downloaded the Ethernet driver from Acer to a jump drive but I cannot get it to work. Please advise for all "other devices" with the same problem. I cant get windows XP to load at all

Here's the problem......... On boot up I get a black screen and then a error message saying <WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPTED < WINDOWS ROOT>\SYSTEM32\ ntoskrnl.exe> please re-install a copy of the above file.

Windows wont load so I can not use system restore or even go into safe mode.
How can I get around windows and get this file " NTOSKRNL.EXE" into system32 folder without windows being able to load ???

Also I have a HP computer which did not come with a windows XP CD. XP is hidden on a partition on the hard drive.
So that kind of leaves out being able to use the CD to repair windows and using the Repair "R" key during bootup.

So how can I get into windows long enough to be able to repair the NTOSKRNL.EXE file ??
Any and all suggestions would be so much appreciated !!!!

OK this is just what I needed. To start off I've already begun the process of moving to a new profile so this is a prevention question because it looks like there is no solution. And I say moving because this is the computer equivalent of having all your things moved out of your house after living there and getting everything just right for a long time. Everything is in-tact BUT what a pain in the rear!!

Everything that I can find regarding a corrupted profile leads me to two MS Knowledge Base Articles:

Note these articles and most of the "solutions" I've found refer to XP and I am running 2K Pro.

1. 318011 This is the article that tells me I'm screwed and have to move all my files and redo all those nuanced settings over again that I've gotten just right over the past 2 years and waste a day and a half doing it. And it has the nerve to call it a Resolution.

2. 811151 This article talks about copying only 3 files (wouldn't that be nice) in order to run the new profile.

The files are:

My questions are:
How do I back up/save my profile regularly so this doesn't happen again? Do I just backup the entire directory of C:\Documents and Settings\hal9000 - which is my cleverly named new profile because I'm sure HAL is going to try and do this again!!

If I copy those 3 files over to my new profile am I not running the risk of copying one of the corrupted files and corrupting my new profile?

Hi all,

Yesterday I came across a tech-help website that demonstrated a way for me to clear my memory without having to restart my computer. As I leave it on for days at a time it seemed like a really good idea, so like an idiot, I did it.

This is the link to the instructions I followed: http://www.spence.nu/blog/?m=200707

Now, I can't even load Windows. When the computer starts up, I get the BIOS info screen and then this error message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt

It sounds really bad!

What can I do to fix this? I don't have any system recovery disks for the computer and I don't want to do a clean format as I've a lot of uni work on there that I'll lose.

By the way, I'm using the other computer on my home network. They're both XP SP2 - could I just copy the files from this computer onto the broken one?

I have an HP Pavilion dv5135nr Laptop, running XP Media Center SP3.I noticed this problem with my 2 Seagate external storage drives. One is an older model, a 160 Gb push-button model, and a brand-new Free Agent Desk 1Tb model. I had them both plugged in and working fine, but the last few days, neither one will register properly. They both show up in the device manager as unidentified USB devices.I can plug in my mouse and sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. I can unplug and replug, and sometimes it works. There's likely a much more serious issue though if several became corrupted at once.

I've got a bit of a problem and after a bit of research I think I've narrowed it down.

I've just upgraded my Processor from a FX6350 to a FX8350. For some reason booted into windows and the keyboard does not want to work. Thought maybe because not powerful enough PSU so I've used another one (I've got a 500w and tried a 600w) and still got the same issue.

Thing is, the keyboard works in post boot and bios but not windows. Bit of research and people say it's the drivers. So I've had a look at device manager and sure enough theres a yellow warning icon on the keyboard and says it cannot find the drivers, so I've found the drivers for the keyboard and gone to install them but I've got another problem:- The driver installer wants me to insert the keyboard into the PC, which I have but it is still not being recognized and there is no lights on my keyboard or anything, the Next button is greyed out and nothing I can do. is there a way of getting round this?

I've got Windows 8 64bit, Saitek Cybourg V7 keyboard, and been doing this all in Safemode. In BIOS, Legacy USB Support and Legacy USB3 Support are both enabled

I've opened opened Windows update and it said there was an update for my keyboard so I've downloaded it and it's thrown up and error and cannot install it, the error is 800f0219

Could this still be a powersupply problem or is it simply drivers?
I never had this issue when I had the FX6350 installed, only since the FX8350 has been installed today has this happened

A:Keyboard drivers installer unable to recognise keyboard

Is this a special keyboard? does your motherboard have ps2 connection for a keyboard/mouse? If so, try connecting a ps2 keyboard as a temporary solution until you can iron out the driver issues. Or maybe just a plain vanilla USB keyboard will do the trick. I don't think your PSU has anything to do with it. Hope this helps.

Our IT guy at work said all he did was install a service pack. Everything was fine before he worked on the computer. He is out of town and I have no functioning drives other than the hard drive. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drives after rebooting the computer. I have tried to update the drivers but don't know enough about doing that to do anything other than click on Update Drivers in the Device Manager and it tells me that the drivers are fine. A:Drivers deleted or corrupted

Boot the Win7 DVD or Repair CD, select Repair My Computer on second screen, accept any offered Repair. If Win7 doesn't start up, boot back in to run Startup Repair
repeatedly until it starts.

Startup Repair is run from boot only in Win7. It should automate System Restore, but if not and it fails boot back in to run that from System Recovery Options

You can copy out your files using DVD/Repair CD with this method: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Next see if you can boot into Safe Mode to install and run a full Malwarebytes scan. If not, download and burn to CD Bitdefender bootable AV scan: FREE Bootable AntiVirus Rescue CDs Download List to boot and run a full scan.

If this cleans up infection, try retarting WIn7. If that fails, try all Repairs again including SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot

My system restore isn't working either so I'm afraid to do something without being sure. Can someone help? Is it possable to copy the drivers off someone elses XP-CD and reload them?

Okay, so I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 with an Intel Core 2 Quad on a Rampage Formula board blah blah blah. So at any rate, I caught a virus of some sort and it did a real number on my USB ports. As of right now, On boot none of the USB devices work until I delete INFCACHE.1, then go to device manager and delete all of the broken USB devices. Windows then reinstalls the USB drivers and everything works again . . . Except for two problems.
1) I have to do this EVERY TIME I BOOT UP.
2) It seems that If I plug a USB device into a different port than the one it was in when I deleted INFCACHE.1, it refuses to work until I go through that whole process again.
I've tried installing the fancy new Intel Chipset thing, and that did nothing. Also, Intel's built in Driver Scanner detects no problems. One last thing: when looking in the Driver details in Device Manager say they're from 2006 and distributed by Microsoft, even though they're all named 'Intel ICH9 Family'.

I might be able to upgrade to Windows 7, will that fix this problem? If not, is there any way I can?

Hi guys.. i think how it started is i was scanning with my anti virus.. and i had some errors so i click optimize.. then i tried to start playing my games then it said, corrupted files on C please run CHKDSK on C drive.. i did run and it says cannot proceed on read only/the volume is too big schedule on your next restart? and i click yes but it never fix anything..
please help...
just a summary i have corrupted disk, probably the C one and i dont know how to fix it.. can tell me how?

A:Corrupted Drivers cannot be fixed..

Chkdsk only finds bad links between drivers. It doesn't scan drivers and replace them with good copies. You do have a program in your Vista installation, however, that does do this, and it is called the System File Checker, or SFC.

"Run as Administrator" a command prompt and type in sfc /scannow

The program will scan every protected operating system file on your computer for errors and if it finds a bad file it replaces it with a good copy.

Then, restart your computer.

Hope this helps the problem!

(I'm a bit illiterate when it comes to naming brands and types for computers and other devices, so if such is needed, please tell me exactly what.)

Anywho, as said in title, my keyboard and mouse ports are not responding and at first I thought it was the keyboard and mouse themselves until I replaced them with new ones. So then I figured i might just need to change the port, however, all my computers (I have 4, one being a laptop) have this exact issue (excluding the laptop as far as I know). So then I figured that they needed an update, but none was required so instead I uninstalled them and rebooted, again, no avail. So I'm nearing the conclusion of a probable virus of some sort. I can't be too sure though, but the sound of all computers having the exact same problem at the exact same time sounds a little fishy. Now, I know I could simply use a USB for all, but if this can be fixed, i'd rather that first. Also, when the keyboard is plugged in, it creates a constant beeping noise as if it had a sticky key. Another thing, one of my computers (which contains my most important files) now officially can't start up due to "system.exe not found". I repeat, very fishy.

If anyone can help (and if I need to provide more details) I would truly appreciate it.
Much obliged.

Last night, while I was working on computer, I tried to load Google, but could not get it to load. Every other site I go to seems to work, more or less, except 411mania, which only loads the sidebar and not the main portion of the page. At first, I thought these were simply problems the two sites themselves were having, but I tested them on other computers and they load fine. Just to be on the safe side, I downloaded AVG 12 Free Edition. It found 77 threats and supposedly got rid of them. Even so, Google still refused to load. So I ran an Anti-Rootkit scan via AVG12 Free. It came across a file, system32/drivers/sfcync2.sys, that it claimed was an IRP hook \Driver\atapi IRP_MJ_INTERNAL_DEVICE_CONTROL -> sfsync02.sys +0x18B4. This was presumably caused by some file with a bunch of numbers in it located in the Documents&Settings/Owner folder. I deleted the number file twice, rebooting each time. That file is now gone, but I still get a Corrupted section atapi.sys [.text] +0x67B4, size 1 bytes reading when I do a Anti-Rootkit scan with AVG12 Free.

Basically, I just want to make sure my computer is virus and rootkit-free, and figure out why Google isn't loading up at all. I'll probably say it many times over the course of this thread, but thanks for any help and/or advice you can give me in relation to this problem. Here are the requested Logs.

I was loading a licensed MS. Office Standard Edition 2007 comprising of MS. Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook on to my HP Deskjet Pentium machine running on Microsoft XP Operating System. However when I inserted the CD the Autoplay did not happen and I got an error message stating standard.ww\osetup.dll cannot be loaded, this may indicate the file is damaged or missing.

Thus i was unable to load the software. I am not a technical person, hence, please advice me in simple ways how to solve this problem. Would downloading osetup.dll file be of any help? If so where to download this and save it where.

I look forward to your reply. thanks

I installed an application off of the AMD website, and it updated a whole lot of stuff in my graphics card, and I'm assuming it updated some drivers as well, which is fine. But it prompted me to restart it for the changes to take effect, when it was restarting the screen went blank for a while, and naturally I had a very brief power cut at my house. Long story short, I think it messed up all the drivers, because my Keyboard, Mouse and Wifi adapter no longer do anything, in any of the USB ports, the Monitor no longer functions in either port on the graphics card and motherboard, meaning I'm completely unable to click or type anything to reset it that way. Anyone know what I can do? I desperately need it for university work. Thanks.

A:Possible corrupted drivers rendering my pc useless

I'm fine with resetting my pc completely as most of the stuff on it I can get back, I just don't know what to do in order to get it back to a state where the ports on the back work.

(This is happening on Windows XP SP3)
Last weekend, I attempted to download the DOS-based fighting game M.U.G.E.N., on the assumption (hoping I'm not making a derp here) that it was free to download.  The site wasn't an official MUGEN site, but I didn't bat an eye because the game is small and not well known - perhaps they didn't want to pay for hosting?
Big mistake.
It turned out to be one of those skeezy download sites that only looks legit, and their version of the game came with a free expansion pack for practicing hand-to-hand combat against malicious code.  The offenders seem to be Sirefef (or, as it should be called, the "ninja vampire cockroach" virus, because that's how hard this stupid thing is to find and kill) and a generic detection for Java exploits/malware.
The first thing I noticed was the sound acting goony, only playing for certain things and only some of the time.  When I tried to fix it, I found that any scanners were prevented from running by "software restriction policies", but a cursory look in both gpedit and secpol reveals that no such policies exist, and any attempts to skirt them by renaming things are blocked because this thing flips every folder on the computer to read-only, allowing you to fix them only to make them read-only again right away.
Over the past several days this computer has been subjected to so many virus scans I've lost count, from nearly as many products.  Most have found and ... Read more

A:Sirefef corrupted sound drivers - help please?

Should I just repost this in the logs section? (running the super tools was not my idea - well, TDSSKiller sort of was, but I got the instructions from elsewhere - and I'm pretty sure the logs are still around.)  This is what happens when I attempt to open MBAM.  My mother managed somehow to reinstall Avast and skirt it past this, but the same could not be said of MBAM.  What the event viewer has to say about it.  What it used to say about Avast.  There is no way this folder should be set to read-only, and attempting to turn off that attribute only results in it being set back to read-only.  Meanwhile, WebZoom is still there, and refuses to respond to the "change/remove" button. Lastly, does anyone know how to upload media to my BC account?  All I have at Imageshack is a trial account, which means my images are probably going to disappear in just over a month.  It used to be free.  EDIT: I set Avast to scan much deeper than usual (including a rootkit scan) and while no residual Sirefef infection showed up (and it still refuses to recognize WebZoom as malware), it did return a couple of threats: According to a web search, that "Agent-DSR" thing is quite a venerable trojan, around since late '06, and it allows a hacker to remote-control your computer. Glad I got rid of it, but the virus chest already contains a couple of generic dropper detections that it apparently found during auto-scans... Read more

I am running Windows 7 on a dual boot system with Windows XP.

Today, when in Windows 7, my CD and DVD drives do not work and the error message says "driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39). They also do not work in XP mode.

The drives work OK in Windows XP.

I have tried to update the drivers on the internet and hard drive storage and it does not work. I also "uninstalled" each drive through the disk manager and then restarted the computer. It tried to install drivers but gave a message saying that they were not installed.

I would like to run the Windows repair program on the install disks but without operating CD and DVD drives, I do not think this is going to work. I tried it using the Windows 7 safe mode and it did not recognize the drives either.

I have some disk images on external hard drives that can be restored but I want that to remain as a last choice because I have installed some programs after making those images that I could reinstall but it would be a nuisance. No programs have been installed within the last week or two.

Any suggestions on a possible fix for this problem?

My desktop uses a USB wired mouse, the mouse worked fine for a month or two, then just started glitching out. Right clicks act as both left and right (at the same time, ikr, it's weird), and left clicks often refuse to go through. I'm assuming that it's the driver, not the mouse, but I could be wrong. I haven't gotten a chance to test the mouse on other systems, but I will try and update this post when I do. The mouse is only a few months old (as is the desktop), so I doubt that the mouse itself is broken, and if it was faulty it wouldn't have worked very well the first time I booted the tower. In attempts to fix the driver I have uninstalled the device and deleted the drivers then unplugged and replugged, works for a few minutes, then goes back to glitches. I can't seem to find a driver download on the Asus website for the model mouse I have, just a user manual. I've also done numerous virus scans with programs like Hitman pro, Malwarebytes, and the service I pay for, Kasperksy. Any ideas as to why this happens? I have exhausted my troubleshooting for now, and don't have a clue, please leave suggestions, thanks.
