Seagate 5TB Expansion Drive not initialized in MBR or GPT? Drive OK?

Q: Seagate 5TB Expansion Drive not initialized in MBR or GPT? Drive OK?

Seagate's website / the manual say the (this one: Desktop-Festplatte Expansion| Seagate) 5TB Expansion Drive is initialized in GPT (Expansion drives switching to GPT) but Windows 7 and dispart (http://i.imgur.com/1JxRAja.png) show it is initialized in MBR / not in GPT (the column under GPT is empty). The item to initialize in / convert to GPT is grayed out (I assume one have to remove the partition first to access that option): http://i.imgur.com/xeqkQmJ.png. And it looks like as if MiniToolPartizionWizard shows it was GPT as well: http://i.imgur.com/PsQfLY8.png

What could that mean? Is the display of Win / diskpart correct?

Is this message correct? DriveInfo shows: S.M.A.R.T. Drive Status: Drive is not OK! The device has detected a threshold exceeded condition! (http://i.imgur.com/5xfPSq9.png). What does that mean? A defect, a problem?
The entire report:
http://i.imgur.com/rySWvIt.png
http://i.imgur.com/qyquxVB.png
http://i.imgur.com/R5bx0s2.png

ChystalDisk shows this, does not appear to look that bad:
http://i.imgur.com/v7TYPhZ.png
and
http://i.imgur.com/z1exc22.png

SeaTools shows this:
http://i.imgur.com/0ulGbCQ.png

HDDscan shows:
http://i.imgur.com/8hlD3pN.png
and
http://i.imgur.com/UMRP2GM.png

What do those items marked with that yellow sign mean:

"Airflow temperature"
and
"HDA Temperatur"
A problem?

What does the display about "Health" mean, 90 %, 92 % (instead of 100 %) appear to mean the state of the drive is not the best (anymore). May be there will occur problems, errors the next time?

Preferred Solution: Seagate 5TB Expansion Drive not initialized in MBR or GPT? Drive OK?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It is on a computer running XP SP3. Now, it shows up in ?My Computer? but with no statistics and I cannot open it. The drive does not show up in Windows Disk Management. I have gone thru the Seagate website's ?External Drive Trouble Shooter for WinDOWS xp/2000? as well as contacting Seagate Support with no success. I have tried Windows Format, DOS Format, Seatools for Windows, HD LFF Low Level Format, testdisk_win, and Disk Wizard with no success. The drive showed up but they all reported failure in testing and/or accessing the disk. Seatools for DOS sounds like it would do the trick but it didnotrecognizeeitherofmyexternaldrives, theotheroneofwhichisworking. Can anyone recommend a fix? Seems to me that it is a software problem, not a hardware problem, so there should be a software solution. I have very limited funds and can't afford to replace the drive right now. It is used as a backup drive so loss of the data on the drive is not an issue. I'll just run another backup when the drive is restored to health. My boot drive is not backed up on this drive, so that is not a problem.

I have a 3g usb seagate expansion drive that is about 3 mths old. It has frequently disappeared from my computer. I would have to reboot and disconnect the power from the drive to get it to come back.

Is this a sign of a bad drive or just a glitch that some kind of a driver update will solve.

In the same system I have a 6g WD drive that works flawless.

Hello
I have a 4TB USB 3.0 Seagate Expansion Drive which dosn't seem to be working.

On File Explorer on "This PC" the drive is recognised as E: Local Drive when previously it was recognised as E: Seagate Expansion Drive

Then I click on E: Local DriveThe PC will think about it for a very long time then the file Explorer will stop responding and eventually the screen goes black except for the mouse and will only start working again when I unplug the drive.

The Device Manager recognises as a Hard Drive as a Seagate Expansion Desk SCSI Disk device
The Disc Management recognises the drive as E: system Raw

The Drive was plugged into a Readynas 104 for a long time but it stopped being detected on there.
The drive was almost full

Thanks in advance

I couldve sworn I posted this question over a month ago but I cant find it anywhere. Not surprising, I dont remember where I parked my car. I might have posted it to airheadsЯus.com for all I know. I have a 320GB Seagate Expansion Drive which worked fine for several months, but in the last week or so the only way I could get it to register on my computer was to push the USB plug into the port on the unit very firmly. This sometimes caused the drive to work for a while, but then later ceased to work when I let go. So, I decided to tape it place very tightly. Wrong move! The whole USB port came loose from the mother board! Is it possible to have this fixed? I have a lot of stuff on the drive I don't want to lose!!!

A:USB port loose from Seagate Expansion Drive

I'm not entirely clear on what you are describing. Are you calling an external hard drive and "expansion drive" or is the "expansion drive" a drive physically mounted in a chassis? An external hard drive doesn't have a motherboard.

If the USB port came loose on an external drive enclosure adapter you could remove the drive from the present enclosure and install it in a new enclosure if the external drive is an IDE drive or a standard SATA drive.

Posting a picture may help decipher exactly what you are describing.

I have a perplexing problem. I have a Seagate 2TB external drive that when I plug it into my USB3 port it appears in Explorer and sometimes I can even navigate through some of its folders. However after 2-5 minutes it just disappears and a message comes up "USB Not recognized".
When I insert it into a USB2 port I cannot see anything. Whilst it is visible I can see it in my Disk Management but as soon as it disconnects itself this disappears. I have tried to format it but it does not stay connected for long enough!
I am running Windows 10. The same problem seems to also occur on a windows 8 machine.

I got my new Seagate 2 TB Expansion Drive and made the first image of my new laptop (running Win 10 anniversary build) using Macrium Reflect. All went well, and I closed Macrium, then attempted to eject the external drive from the notification area. I consistently got an error message saying the drive could not be ejected and until the program using it was closed. Task Manager confirmed no application was running. Device Manager could not remove the drive, either. Shutting down the computer and then removing the drive was no problem, but surely this shouldn't be necessary. Any advice would be welcome!

Hi, I'm new to the forum so please bear with me!

So I've been using my external hard drive for over a year to store music and photos; it has a 500GB capacity.

But recently when I've plugged my hard drive in it's not showing under my computer, or if it does show it wont open and I keep getting an error message. Is there any other way I can go about searching for it on my laptop?

I don't know if it's my laptop or my hard drive that has the problem, and really need some help please!
(The only other laptop I have available is a Mac, which i cannot use to open the hard drive unless I format it, which means losing my data so i really don't want to do that)
EDIT: i've followed the troubleshooting on the seagate website, and discovered that my hard drive partition is RAW.. is there a way i can change this?

Have joined to see if i can get some assistance, noticed others have done this with success.

I have a seagate 1TB expansion Hard Drive which was firstly coming up with I/O error and now the computer doesnt even register that its connected dispite connection noises from the drive itself on usb connection.

I have read through various topics and forums and carried out a number of the checks and processes to run through but still without success.

I have tried this on other laptops and issue is exactly the same. I have another Buffulo expansion drive which is working fine in all USB ports. The system is windows Vista and upgraded to service pack 2. I have cleaned up existing USB drivers on system also.

When disk management is opened the system doesnt read the drive is connected. There is no excessive noises coming from drive but lights on and small amount of heat is given off.

Needing help as i use drive to back up important photos and files dont want them lost. Can anyone help please?

A:Seagate expansion hard drive not showing on computers

Sounds like the drive has failed as you had been getting warning signs with the I/O errors and now it has stopped working. There is a possibility that it is just the circuitry in the housing so you may be able to get it going again with a new housing. You could first test the drive by removing it from the housing and hooking it up to the internal connections of a desktop PC or by using a USB adapter.

Howdy,

I bought a new computer with Win7 about a month ago which came with a 1TB Seagate hard drive installed so I decided to replace my previous 250 GB Aulartek External with a 1TB Seagate External Drive.

Well ... to make a long story short I tried installing the new Seagate 1TB Expansion Drive a few hours ago but up to this point I can't get the computer to recognize it.

However, there is a 'green light' visible on the end of the new Seagate External that is lit up and if I click on the 'Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media' button on the taskbar it does show something called 'Eject Desktop' under 'Open Devices and Printers'.

I tried going to the Seagate Community Forum but got even more confused than when I started trying to troubleshoot my problem with not being able to see it listed under 'Computer'.

My old Aulartek External had an 'on and off switch' and this new Seagate doesn't have one unless I just can't find it.

I have both the USB and A/C Power supply plugged in.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks and regards,

Try right clicking on computer in the start menu, and select manage. In the window that opens after giving admin approval, selece disk management in the left column. It should show every hard drive connected to your computer. In the lower portion of the window, look for your Seagate, right click it and select change drive letter or path, in the next window click add and choosed a drive letter. Click OK. after the drive letter is assigned, you will be able to see the drive in explorer.

Hi there.

For the past week I have been retrieving 2 TB of movies from my Seagate 3TB Expansion Desk drive (USB 3). It started acting funny after my room mate accidentally flipped the main power circuit for my bedroom while I was in the middle of a transfer. Oddly enough, I was in the middle of retrieving videos from a 6+ year old Verbatim 500 GB which had an ongoing power circuit issue when he flipped the switch. I was salvaging those videos to this 3TB drive at that moment. He killed that Verbatim dead to rights with the surge, and I believe it caused the issues on this Seagate 3TB.

I can still transfer data to and from the Seagate anywhere from 35-90 MB/s depending on if the other drive is a USB 3 as well. But it just will not play many movies, and HD particularly bad. I mainly use Kodi (XBMC), but have tried VLC and MPC. All fail at the same points or close in the different players. I assumed corrupt files but when I copy them to other drives then play them they work .

So, I ran chkdsk I: /f /r . It ran thru quickly saying no issues. Every indicator has shown the drive as healthy. I ran the zero out option with a format in Partition Wizard. Didn't help. Frustrated last night I decided to run chkdsk I: /r one last time. It hung at 10%, and thinking maybe its doing something, I left it, but it was going for nearly 24 hours. I finally cancelled the chkdsk and ran a surface test with Partition Wizard and now after an hour or so, I am getting some bad blocks a... Read more

Hi to all

Seagate Model: SRD00F2
Win 7 home prem... 64bit

I have had this external for over a year and it just recently started to respond very slow.

My aim is to save all the media files before this drive dies out or even solve the problem. Maybe it wont die out yet but never know what may happen. I have an older external and that still works.
When i plug the usb into laptop and other pcs, the drive used to appear quickly but now what happens is it appears in device manager/disk drives first but does not appear in my computer window. It takes a long while for the drive icon to appear. It normally shows also in disk management before it shows up in my computer window.
Next step is when its finally showing... when i go into the external it takes a long while again to enter the drive. The address bar turns green from left to right but moving very slowly as the external tries to open each folder.

I dont want to format or lose any data, its the first time i came across this problem. I brought a new usb cable and that did not solve the matter.

When it loads the files and folders, im trying to copy all the files to desktop to save everything. But the transfer speed is like below 10kb. Its very slow. The fastest its been is just over 1MB.

Another tip is when i plug in the cable.. the blue light turns on and the drive starts spinning and can hear the sound. I thought the drive seemed ok but maybe the proffesional guys on here will have a better understanding on how to... Read more

Hey, wondering if someone can help

Bought my new external hard drive and put a load of my files onto it with no problem at all, but today, on the second time of using it, I plugged it in and it seems to be working because the green light is on and the icon to eject is there, but its not showing in My Computer.

I've seen people saying about the Disk Management and changing the name or path.... so when I open up that window, the disk is not named, when I right click on it, everything is greyed out apart from Help and Delete Volume options.

I've tried uninstalling the drive under the Device Manager and re-installing it again. but that doesn't work either.

I have tried this on my 2 laptops, PB and HP, and it is exactly the same on both. Both run windows 7 64-bit.

Hope Someone is able to help me out a bit, Thanks Lynne.

Hi,

When I switched my Laptop on yesterday the nice Seagate Icon for my external backup hard drive had vanished but has been replaced by a dull looking generic Windows page icon ? This external backup drive is the K:\ drive on my system.

I surfed google yesterday trying to find some advice on how to restore what was a very attractive Icon ? . . but have been struggling to find any advice I could understand or thought I'd be able to follow ?

On a positive note, I have located the exact file for the disappeared icon on my laptop (its called SeagatePortable.ico) and I have copied it to my desktop temporarily, but, I have no idea how to re-apply this icon to my K:\ drive ?

Whilst surfing, I discovered a simple freeware program called "Drive Icon Changer" so I downloaded this program and tried to use it. It is very easy to use, but, try as I might, I cannot get this programme to interact with my K;\ drive ? . . so I've given up and uninstalled that programme, as, in this instance at least, it clearly does not do what it is supposed to be able to do.

I also saw some advice about going to a DOS prompt (I do not understand what this means or how to do it?) and deleting or editing something called the autorun.inf file - I suspect this type of action would be well beyond my understanding and I'd probably do more harm than good if I attempted to edit this sort of system file and got it wrong !

I've also done a system restore - to a back up point of a couple of days ... Read more

The computer may still be saving data to the Flash. Or it is caught in ROM. If your certain the transfer is complete, you can pull the drive. You may want to do a Check Disk on the Flash Drive to make sure it is in good order.

I'm having trouble getting Windows 7 x86 RC Build 7100 to recognize my Seagate 3.5" External Hard Drive 500GB (Model ST305004EXA101-RK). It is connected through a USB 2.0 port on my Asus K8V SE Motherboard - running an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2.0 GHz) and 1 GB of RAM.

Currently, this hard drive when connected appears in Device and Printers as as "Device" named Desktop. Right Click -> Properties shows that it is a storage device.

Device Manager recognizes it as a Disk Drive and calls it a Seagate Desktop USB Device - no conflicts.

Under Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management the drive appears as Disk 1 - Basic and Online statuses. If I try and assign it a drive letter, I get the following "The operation failed to complete becasue the Disk Managment Console view is out of date. Please refresh the console view..."

Only one conflict exists in Device Manager - I have one Unknown Device under USB Controllers. When viewing that device, it gives me a Code 43 error.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I currently have it out of the case and attached internally. I had to add it with computer running since I can't access any jumper settings and computer won't boot with it installed.

BUT it shows up in disk management. Images attached.

Can I initialize but not format, will that help it show up in Partwizard so I can get at the data somehow to save?

For the love of God HELP please...

Kevin

I initialized the HDD I was using for my PS3 with Disc Management so that Windows can read it when I right away realized that it wasn't such a great idea. Is there any way whatsoever that I can undo that so the PS3 can read it again?

A:Is there a way to uninitialize a just initialized drive without formatting?

Initializing the hard drive means you formatted it and erased whatever was on itSome say just put it back in and it will reformat itself. Other says to zero it out first with something like Killdiskhttp://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/702626

Hi, thanks for trying to help me with this.

I recently moved and had my external hard drive disconnected and in storage for several months. It is a Western Digital model# WD500H1U-00. It has a separate power supply. There is a blue light on the front that is illuminated all the time, except when I connect the HD, then it will flash. When I got unpacked I hooked it up to my desk top and the computer would not access it. I then tried to install it on my laptop with no success. Since then I purchased a USB cord, with no luck.

This hard drive has a LOT of irreplaceable information on it. Formatting it is not an option.

Kevin at SpywareHammer.com was helping me with some other stuff and suggested I:

Regarding the ext HD, try this please:

1) Control panel===>administrative tools===>computer management===>Disk management

2) You'll Should see a list of Disks, Is Disk 1 listed with no partition letter assigned? if so continue

3) Right mouse click into the disk field, select Change drive letter and paths ===> choose a letter from the drop down, select OK. the HD should now be available.

No luck here either. When I right click on the disk field nothing happens. When I right click on the title block(?) I get: Initialize Disk (faded), Offline, Properties and, Help.

I also downloaded "MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition". That program did not recognize the HD.

Hi,

My problem is as follows:
External Hard Drive (1Tb WD Elements) that I've been using for a few months now has data on that I would very much like to keep.
It was working fine until yesterday in which I tried opening a VS project which became unresponsive, tried closing everything down and turning off computer which just froze the computer leading to a hard reset (button held for 5 seconds)

Since then the External Hard Drive has not been shown in Windows Explorer and in Disk Management is shown as "Unkown" and "Not Initialized"

The Drive will still be seen correctly in Device Manager and if uninstalled it will say it has correctly installed and is ready to use.

Attempts to recover data or Initialize the drive have not worked and I have followed and looked up multiple ways to recover and other similar cases. I'm fairly certain for the data recovery the drive needs to be initialized (which just throws me an I/O error upon attempting the process) as looking at the Volume section in the properties of the device the size of the drive is listed as 0Mb.

My Last resort is taking it to a data recovery shop and hope they can grab the stuff on there.

Any help is muchly appreciated thanks.

A:External Hard Drive Not Initialized

I'm not up on WD Elements. Did that HD come with a form of Smartware, and in that Smartware, was there a utility that would come up and either ask you to type in the user-assigned password or it would automatically type in the saved password and pass same onto The System -- and unlock the WD Elements? I ask because I'm a little familiar with WD Passport, not WD Elements.

With the USB drive plugged in, go to Control Panel > Device Manager. Then see if there are any yellow exclamation marks. Try right click, update driver.

A:external drive say it was online, not initialized, and sometimes RAW

Hi andremarb,

Welcome to SevenForums.

From the description of your problem, I would think that the cable could have got damaged due the unceremonious kick that the HDD received. So as a first step use a new cable and check how your external drive behaves.

If the problem persists, please start a new thread explaining your problem in detail. Furnish full details of your external drive make/manufacturer/ Model /Capacity along with a full screenshot of how the drive appears in Windows Disk Management. Please adhere to the guidelines here Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

In the new thread, even if it is not me - so unreliable these days , some one else can address your concern. So move on with the new thread.

EDIT: Just noted that your post has been moved on to a new thread. But this post still holds - more details and screenshot after changing to a new cable.

If anyone can help me figure this out i am stumped. Pictures to help explain my situation. I have 3 hard drives that are not showing up in my computer but is showing up in Device Manager. They show up as "Disk 1 Unknown Not initialized". I cannot loose the data on the drives. in Diskpart it shows only as a drive and says 0gb meanwhile 2 are 320gb and the other is 2tb. Also i am connecting them via USB because they are from my desktop and my desktop wont boot off of them and neither will my laptop through bios. The drives also will not show up in Partition Wizard. The drive is spinning and has never been dropped. Also the drives do not show up in disk part as volumes. I need all of the data off the drives if possible. Thanks!

A:Hard drive not initialized and has data on it

Someone else will have to help you with getting your data off your drives (or, more likely, you will have to pay a recovery specialist well north of $1k per drive to attempt to recover the data with no guarantees of success, the option I would recommend since trying to recover the data yourself may permanently lose otherwise recoverable data) but, in the future, you need to backup your data to avoid this problem in the future. All drives will fail, some sooner than later, often without warning. The only way to reasonably ensure your data is safe is for it to exist in at least three places, such as on the computer, on an onsite backup, and on an offsite backup (I have five backups per drive, two onsite, two in my credit union safe deposit box, and on a paid cloud backup site). Backups need to stay disconnected from the computer except when updating the backup and need updating frequently since data not backed up usually can't be recovered. An acceptable low end plan would be an onsite external drive for each drive in use. A cloud backup plan, such as Carbonite.com, CrashPlan, or Backblaze (I use Carbonite) is an easy, fairly inexpensive way to get an offsite backup and keep it up to date (Carbonite starts at $60/month, the price I pay, and the others are similarly priced). The only caution is to use a cloud backup service, not a cloud storage service.

Hi all,

I'm having an issue where my external hard drive (WD Passport Ultra 2TB) is not displaying in my computer and is not initialized in Disk Management. This occurred after my computer crashed while I was pulling out data from the external hard drive. Now when I plug in the external hard drive, it has a clicking sound for a few seconds then stops with a blinking light.

I have tried using the MiniTool Partition Wizard and it does not detect it. When I open up Disk Management, it says that I need to initialize the disk before I can access it. I read somewhere that I will lose my files if I initialize this, so I have not done so. The Disk Management also does not show any unallocated space in it. Please see attached image.

Currently I just want to take out all the data from this hard drive before I let this drive go if I can't save it. Is there any hope for me to save my files?

Best regards,
Jeefster

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

I shouldn't say suddenly. It's a 2TB drive I had in an enclosure that took a bump off a short table the other day. It seemed fine when I tested it and pulled up all the folders. But when I went to move a file off of it, the drive disappeared. It shows up in drive manager as not initialized and not allocated. Working with a friend I tried Minitools Partition Wizard, Power Data Recovery, and Easy Recovery. None of them found anything, no partition and no files. I just wanted to check if there were any other suggestions before I gave it up. Seemed weird the folders and files showed up after the drop, then trying to actually access them made it trash itself. I figure it would be gone from the start. Thanks for any tips (if there are any).

A:Drive suddenly shows not initialized and not allocated

It looks like the drive is probably wrecked. It only takes a small knock to irreparably damage the heads particularly if the drive is actually powered & working at the time.
Some firms specialise in data recovery, but I have heard it is very expensive & would only be worth looking into, if the data on the drive was absolutely essential.

I searched for the title of this thread, "hard drive is no longer initialized windows 7" and found a thread here where I am following these very good instructions by jumanji:

http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-...ml#post2386144

I could not directly download the software mentioned, but at the site linked I was able to find the software: pwfree91.exe

I am scanning now, its been scanning for a couple hours, it seems it may scan for days, not sure if it will display here or attach.

You can see how much is scanned and how much is to go, at this rate it will literally take days.

All the numbers seem correct, size and how much is used, etc, that is encouraging.

It seems the data I am trying to recover from this internal drive is in fact there.

Is this the recommended track still today, the one mentioned in jumanji's post linked above?

A:my external hard drive is unknown and not initialized

I assume you have tried another usb cable; that is the very first thing to do.
If you have already done the above, then the next thing I would do would be to pull the drive out of the enclosure and connect it as an internal drive. Note you must have a working desktop to accomplish this task. If that does not work, you can send the drive to a data recovery shop. This last step is NOT cheap so get an estimate. A simple recovery using software can run $250 or so plus the cost of whatever media you want the data copied to AND it goes way up from there.

Data you do not backup is data you do not care about AND you should expect to lose said data. All drives fail; it is only a question of when your drive will fail.

Hello,
first of all I would just like to point out that I am not a native speaker so I apologize in advance for the mistakes I might make.
I have a problem with my external hard drive. The drive is Verbatim 47512. Last year I unplugged the drive without safely removing it first. When I plugged it in again it asked me to format the drive. As I didn't wanna loose my files I tried using Recuva and it worked. However, the process took too long and I was leaving for ten months the next day so I had to stop the process. I wanted to continue when I got back but the drive wasn't working at all. I couldn't even turn it on. I kept trying and after some time it started to work again. When I plug it in, I can't find it in my computer. But I can find it in the disk management. I'm attaching a picture, it says it's uninitialized and that it needs to be initialized. I don't know what it means and I'm scared it might delete my files. It also says that it's allocated and unknown. https://postimg.org/image/zci27fe6h/
I downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard and it says that my disk is bad. I don't know how to proceed, can you please help me? Or should I give up?

I have a external hard drive that's not initialized, but it recognizes with a messages pops up saying my drive is ready for use, but it doesn't show up under My Computer. I have a Windows 7 desktop PC that is a Home Premium 32-bit Anytime Upgrade. I'm thinking it's not fried, and I'm thinking that way because I received the message it found new hardware and ready to use? Or is it dead?

Also, I don't have a spare enclosure, and tools to open it up, so taking it out of the enclosure would be out of the question.

Thank you for any help!

I had a WD 2TB external drive which I transferred successfully to a USB 3.0 enclosure months ago. Then I moved and the drive has been packed away in the trunk of my car since.

I just got it out as I need some files on it, and when I hooked it up it didn't work: the computer recognized it as a CD drive or something... in Computer it would not show up or show up as just a drive letter ... in disk management it said No Media. I tried it on another PC too to no avail.

After much research, the most likely solution looked to be to get a new enclosure. So I did, but the drive still isn't working, but in a different way.

When I first hooked it up, all looked well: the system tray showed correct recognition of the drive and enclosure type/brand and installed the drivers successfully.

But the drive no longer shows up in Computer at all, and in disk management it now prompts me to initialize the disk, and has it marked as Unknown, Not Initialized.

I have spent all day trying to fix this problem, and have read a million threads on different sites and tried everything, to no consequence. I need the files on the drive, and have tried all of the following:

- booting in ubuntu and knoppix via cd - drive is not recognized

- every major app for this type of problem i saw recommended: seagate seatools, partition wizard, wd data lifeguard diagnostics, power data recovery, find and mount, a bunch of stuff on hiren's boot cd, test disk, etc.

In most cases, the drive was no... Read more

I ran BIOS diagnostics on a Dell OptiPlex 3010 yesterday and received an error code (2000-0142) - short self test unsuccessful. I pulled the drive and swapped a new SATA drive to get the user back up and running quickly. I'm trying to connect the drive with the error to my laptop using a StarTech USB 2.0 to IDE SATA Adapter. When I open Disk Management I see Disk 0 (my laptop drive) and Disk 1 (the connected drive). It says Unknown / Not Initialized. When I right click and try to initialize it says "The device is not ready." I've tried the more actions > refresh / rescan. Now when I right click the option to Initialize Disk is grayed out and I can only see Offline and Properties.

I browsed through a thread from about 2 years ago and couldn't find a helpful solution.

The drive: Western Digital 250GB SATA / 16MB Cache - WD2500AAKX

A:Disk Management - Unknown / Not Initialized Drive

Have you attempted to run Western Digital's Data Lifeguard diagnostic software? It has a short test and an extended test.

Are you trying to recover anything from this drive? Or just trying to find out if it's broken?
