I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi
my Dell Inspiron 14z is stuck on the Dell Logo at boot up.
it was working well yesterday, but just become freeze at boot up
I can't press F2 F8 or F12 because it freezes at this point.
Releasing the residual charge did nothing (I drained the battery, have no courage to remove battery as the procedure is kind of complicated) - same problem
Restarting and tapping F12 highlights 'Boot options' but at this point it freezes.
Restarting with Fn pressed had no effect - same problem.

Any advice greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Eric

This afternoon I turned on my PC, I suddenly saw that the BIOS boot progression bar was starting at half way, it moved less than a cm it gets stuck there. I have tried turning off and spamming F12, F2, F5 etc, I can't get in to the options to boot from an Ubuntu disc I have so at least I can get data off the HDD. I am worried its my mobo or something thats gone. Any ideas would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advanced

Welcome
If you cannot load ubuntu, it is a hardware problem. It can be anything, but the first suspect would be the hard drive.

A:XPS 12 stuck on dell logo screen, help please!!!!

Hi GAVIN814,
Kindly try to toggle the caps lock key and let me know if it gets toggled?
Perform a hard reset on the laptop and use a known good outlet to do that remove all the external peripherals and press down the power button for 15 seconds and start the system.
Let me know if you get to hear any beep code when you start the system?
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Hi everyone, I took delivery of a 9550 (32Gb, 4k) 2 weeks ago. Did all the usual updates - only problem was the flickering screen, which I see is due to be fixed in a later BIOS update. Then 2 days ago, I got the win10 anniversary update. Since then, the 2 times I've turned it on from cold, it's sat at the dell logo & never booted windows. Both times I've been able to fix it by going into the BIOS, not changing anything, but saving & restarting. Then it boots fine. I found some older posts from people with these kinds of problems, but I wasn't sure whether those issues were still present in the latest BIOS (1.2.10), which I've got, or if I had some other issue. It seems odd that it only happened after the anniversary update, but it would be equally strange for the anniversary update to affect a cold boot but not a reboot.Any ideas?

Hi Minelson,
To assist you further with this issue, I would request you to help me with the system model and the Operating system installed on the computer. In case you have windows 8 installed, you can try the following steps. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. Please write back, would be glad to assist you further.

I am running Windows 8.1 - the same o/s that came with my Inspiron 15-5547.
I move the computer between work and home. When I put  to sleep, and unplug it from power, then next time I turn on the computer, about 50% of the time it resumes correctly.
However, the other 50% of the time, I turn on the computer and it is displaying the round Dell logo on a black screen (like BIOS startup).  But the computer remains frozen on the screen and Windows does not load.
I need to hold down the power button to shut down, and then I wait a few seconds, and turn the computer back on.
At this point, the computer will usually load Windows correctly.  A few times I still get the frozen Dell screen and then just power off/on again.
Does anyone have any tips to fix this?  I am afraid that one day, Windows just won't load at all and then I'll be stuck.
Thanks,
Mike

A:Inspiron 15-5547 sometimes does not restart from sleep and gets stuck on Dell Logo screen

Always turn the computer completely off (shutdown) before moving. Leaving a computer Sleeping and then transporting it can damage the computer. Laptops use battery power when sleeping. They can overheat or worse when transported while in Sleep mode.
Make sure you sometimes use the laptop on battery power alone--without the adapter. Batteries last longer when they are regularly used on battery and recharged regularly.

I'm new here and have searched the web but can't seem to find similar symptoms.
I've noticed after performing various updates (either to whatever programs or Windows itself - any ones that require a re-start) that when I re-start my laptop and when the Alienware logo appears, booting basically freezes. I'm only having issues when I restart...even when there are no pending updates to anything.
I tested today and booting actually continues on its own, but VERY slowly.  If I get stuck at this screen and I press my power button, the laptop immediately turns off.  Pressing the power button again boots the machine (to what I consider) normally.  It basically whizzes by the Alienware logo screen and into Windows without issue.  If I fully shutdown, then use the power button to boot up, everything goes normally too.  Re-starting (anytime) is when my issue occurs.

Can't even boot in safe mode or the repair mode or from the Windows installation disk.....always gets stuck at the Windows logo screen where it says "Windows Starting".

When trying to boot normal, I get the "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device" error. The only way I can get past this error is by rebooting and going into and exiting the BIOS without changing any settings at all......weird. Then once I get past the error, the computer hangs on at Win logo screen. I dont get this error when booting from the DVD The computer does not halt though, the animation of the windows symbol keeps going.

So far the only things I have done are remove all my USB devices except for the keyboard and disabled the hardware in the BIOS that I don't need for booting.

I have disabled the hard drive when trying to boot from disk and disabled the optical drives when trying to boot from the hard drive but still gets stuck at the screen either way.

Any suggestions would be appreciated...

ISSUE RESOLVED

While I was moving the CMOS jumpers around to clear the BIOS settings, I unplugged my DVD burner (this had been disabled in the BIOS for a while) because it had started having issues being detected by the computer. When I set my BIOS settings back up, the pc was still hanging at the logo screen. I rebooted and tried to boot into the repair console......and it worked. I did a system restore and now everything is up and running.

I'm stuck in a never-ending loop in the Windows XP Boot Screen with the Logo and the Blue Progress Bar. Whenever I boot into it, I get stuck in it. No the computer doesn't restart, it just stays there,. I think what may have caused it is when I tried to Hibernate my computer, it hanged, so I powered it down by holding the power button for 5 seconds. The thing is though, is that I've done this a LOT of times on my old computer, and never had any problems.

I turn it back on, to find that I'm now stuck in the loop. I've tried 6 System Restore Points that took about 1 hour each, chkdsk /f /v, HDD Regenerator, unplugging peripherals , uninstalling my Graphics Driver, Network Card Drivers and NICs, used the Repair option from my Windows XP disc, used SpinRite Level 4 and a few more I can't remember, none of them worked.

I also have UBCD4Win and Hiren's Boot Disk.

Ever since I've done the Repair, I can't get into Safe Mode any more, saying that "Windows XP Setup can't be started under Safe Mode. The Setup will now restart." After I click OK, the computer restarts, so a bit of a problem there...

Would appreciate any help. Post your thoughts, whatever. A little contribution could go a long way...

Hello,
I have a notebook Amilo Pi 1505, Windows XP Home 32bits.
Until yesterday it was working just fine. When I opened it today, it just stuck on the black windows logo screen.
I tried every safe boot but it won't work. If I remember correctly at most of them, if not all, it was just a black screen with an underscore on the upper left corner but I could not write anything. I tried unsuccessfully the restore point function and to get into the recovery consol. Also, I tried mini XP and one time would get stuck and the other would get in a wallpaper with no icons and no response.
I managed to get into the computer with PartedMagic. I suspected the hard disk since it had some problems but it was generally ok . I run GSmartControl now and it had BASIC HEALTH CHECK: PASSED although there were some errors. I am not sure if it has to do anything with a brief -1sec- power loss yesterday night. Although it restarted normally after this.
Another problem is I have forgotten the windows xp cd far away from my current location and if I remember I need to have this exact cd for a repair/installation because a) the xp serial number is erased and b) it includes some drives that normal installation cds do not have and I'd have to do slipstreaming (or sth like that?)

I wrote too much I think..
Anyway, if you need any more info please ask for it.
Thank you!

Hello Univers789,
Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Hello, I've been reading many posts of people having similar problems on Google for the past 2 days but no success for myself.

Basically my mother and sister tried using the computer yesterday morning while I was out. They said it froze and so they tried restarting it, but while restarting it simply hangs at the screen after the initial motherboard logo screen. It shows my hard drives and PCI Listing information etc in white writing on a black background.
I can access the BIOS and boot method (like if I wanted to boot from floppy etc) but I cannot access advanced boot options so I can go into safe mode, it wont get that far, just freezes. I cannot do a reinstall of windows as I dont have a disk or key.

I have replaced the cmos battery and restored it from BIOS without any luck, it still hangs. All I want to do now is jut get to adv boot options for safe mode but it just freezes. I've also swapped ram around etc so its not that, I can see from the BIOS the CPU is fine also aswell as my video card. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I need this sorting as soon as possible as I work and receive my income through this computer (allot of important files).
Thanks,

Malli.

A:PC stuck at boot info screen (after mobo logo) please advise

Just an update, I'm back from college, and basically I was able to get an xp disk. Anyway I put it in computer and pressed f12 to choose to boot from the CD/DVD drive, and all it did was hang at the same screen again with the error message:

"A disk read error occurred
Press ctrl+apt+del to restart"

Also even if I just leave it to boot normal, it says the exact same thing "A disk read error occured". They checked the disk at college to see if it worked and it did so the disk read error isn't the disk, its almost as if it's just totally ignored the disk boot? I'm confused now, if I can't boot from a disk then that rules out Linux too I guess.

Then the next time, when I turned on my computer it showed

I chose, "Previous Start up (the one that worked for you last time)"

When I pressed it, it went back to the COMPAQ screen with logo.

I am working on a Dell model : DCSLA

When I go to boot up I get the black screen with the Dell logo in the middle and the two options in the upper right corner to either "F2" for setup or "F12" for boot menu. I cannot get it to do anything else. It will not read from a restore disk or hirem's restore utility disk either.

I have checked the ram and it seems to be ok. It had two 1gig chips and two 512gig chips. While I am working on it I took out the two 512's.

I am thinking it might be a bios issue but I am unfamiliar on how to reset or fix that. I have tested the hard drive and it seems to be ok. I have a usb cable that allows me to work on hard drives via the usb cable and power supply on my own computer. So far I haven't done anything but look at the drive and it seems ok. The computer should still boot up to the bios without a hard drive.

Can anyone help me in this matter? Can I reset the bios or reinstall then somehow? I don't want to be messing around where I don't know what I am doing.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I do however see some jumpers on the motherboard. One is marked "clear pw" and the other is marked "clear cmos". Could this have something to do with it.

The computer doesn't have much in the way of information on it except the sticker which certifies it for Windows Vista Home Premium and of course the product key. The only thing it says in the way of model is # DCSL... Read more

Try clearing the CMOS, might be the solution. if that doesn't work you could try flashing the bios, here's the documention on how to do both. Just follow the steps exactly and you'll be fine, it requires you to go into the actual computer to do it.

EVGA Super nova 700B1 or 750B1 works fine.

Yesterday I installed critical/needed Windows XP updates that had been waiting on me for a few weeks behind the yellow update shield in the lower right corner of my screen. I was having problems connecting my sons new Christmas present, Xbox Live , to the internet so I was about to restart the computer to see if maybe the router needed me to do a clean reboot after entering the Xboxs MAC address into my allowed devices list. I stupidly thought Id be thorough by installing those waiting updates first and then restart. All went well and when it finished and asked if I wanted to restart now I selected yes. Nothing happened. I kept trying, still no restart. Then I went to Start>Turn Off>Restart several times and each time I returned to my desktop with nothing happening. Finally I just did a cold shutdown with the power button. My son is, understandably, so upset that he cant use his present to connect with his friends live.

I'm assuming the system is on windows 10....
I'd suggest you try to get system to boot into the Recovery Repairs screen. At the Dell logo screen, turn off your computer using the hard reset /power button. Keep turning the computer on and off until you see your PC booting into the Recovery Repairs Option screen, see image below. It should only take a few reboots.

Hi BLAKE00,
What is the exact system model?
After the system was dropped, is there any dents / cracks / damage on the chassis or the display or bezel?
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional. Also, run an extended / thorough tests on the HDD and memory to check for any possible errors.
Run the LCD bist - Turn off the system and press and hold the "D" key + power button to turn on the system and it should run the LCD built in self test - see this link for more info - http://dell.to/1SkXNrG
If there are no errors on the diags and the LCD self test passes, then connect an external monitor and check if it works fine.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Hi all,
I have just acquired a dell Inspiron 5547 laptop. I believe it originally shipped with Windows 8 but the previous owner has upgraded it to Windows 10. I went into the control panel of Windows 10 and chose the option to remove the previous users data and reset the pc. However mid-way into the reset I received an error saying "there was a problem while resetting your pc" and then gave me a few options I selected "continue, exit and continue to Windows 10" however after this the laptop will not boot. It sits on the dell logo and then goes black then returns to the dell logo. I am unsure of what to do, and when I press F8 I cannot access recovery. Do I need to reinstall Windows 10 from a USB? If I do so how will I activate it as the original Windows 8 product key is not on the back. Thanks

A:DELL Latitude 3340 Stuck at DELL LOGO

Hi james.hilham,

I would like to look into this further, can you Private Message me your Service Tag on the system? Also, it sounds like you might have seen the Diagnostic Boot Screen, but can you try these steps below to see if it gets any further:

1. Disconnect the AC adapter from the system and remove the system battery.2. Hold down the Power button for approximately 10 seconds to drain any residual power and then release the power button3. Hold the power button down once more while inserting the AC adapter into the system. This will initiate the Forced ePSA which may clear the state causing the system to remain at the Dell splash screen.4. Release the power button once you see any text on the display or the Dell splash screen\5. The Dell ePSA (Pre-boot System Assessment) diagnostic page will next appear6. If the ePSA page does not appear then the recovery method was not effective.7. Should ePSA initiate allow it to complete the quick test to determine if any component failures exist.8. Should the system recover from the condition and boot into the operating system, it is very important to update the system BIOS immediately after the system has recovered to prevent a reoccurrence.

You also view a video on the steps here:
Lastly, when the system freezes at the Dell startup screen, can you let me know if there are any diagnostic LEDs, such as a certain blinking light pattern (there might even be solid lights) for the HDD LED, Power LED, and/or the Wireless L... Read more

Hello all!
New to the Dell Forums, I've always wanted to sign on and learn more about my devices through community discussion, but I never have. Now I have a more emergent reason to.

My Dell Inspiron 3847 Tower refuses to turn on. I was playing league of legends on my desktop. I received a blue crash screen and my computer turned off. I then proceeded to turn it back on, however the power light would go orange, then white, fans would turn on, then stop. Computer would completely shut off two seconds after turning it on and it cycles. I'll turn it on, it'll go orange, white, then off. It would cycle for hours if I let it.
My first instinct is a fried power supply, however I don't see how my power supply would go kaput in the middle of a gaming session.
I don't want to spend the $50 on purchasing the power supply if that's not the case. Anyone help me out as to what the issue is?
Thanks!

A:Dell Inspiron 3847 Cycles Boot

The power supply would indeed be the first suspect, but before going further, unplug the system and hold the power button for 30 sec.  See if you can get it to start up -- if it won't, replace the power supply first.  If that doesn't solve the problem, then replace the mainboard.
If you are not willing to start swapping parts, most PC shops will do a basic diagnosis for a relatively low cost and provide a repair estimate that credits the diagnostic fee toward the ultimate cost of the repair.

Dell 3847 Inspiron with Windows 10 Home OS. I can change the BIOS to boot from ODD as the primary but system still boots to Windows. Dell support had me update chipset drivers but no luck. After an hour of trial and error they then wanted to transfer me to someone that I had to pay for support. I gave up.

I have CD to clone my drive and it works in 3 other Dell PCs I have so I know the CD is good. There are options in the BIOS I've never seen such as Security Boot Control (disabled), Load Legacy OPROM (enabled), Boot Mode (EUFI), etc. First boot device is set to Internal ODD Devices and second boot device is set to EUFI: Windows Boot Manger.

The CD/DVD drive in the PC is good as it'll recognize any CD I put in there after Windows boots, so Windows recognizes it.

Any trick to getting this PC to boot to the CD so I can try to clone the factory hard disk to an SDD unit?

Thanks

A:Cannot boot from CD in new Dell 3847 w/Windows 10 Home

Hi, your PC is using UEFI; is your CD UEFI compatible?
What you are seeing is exactly what happens if you use a non-UEFI CD with a UEFI based system.
You say it works on other PCs - do those use UEFI or traditional BIOS?

If your CD is not UEFI compatible, you should be able to boot from it with your UEFI PC if you can select CSM mode (legacy boot) in your BIOS.

But note you'd need to set it back again to boot your PC normally.

Better solution: get an updated version of the CD

Hi, Shutdown the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Diagnostic Menu option ( f2 ) and run the tests on the Hard Drive and Memory. Post back with the results, including any error codes that may be generated. Can you also post back with the full Model No. and Product No. of your hp 2000 series notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information. Regards, DP-K

Perhaps once a month I have noticed that my Dell performs rather oddly at bootup.
The Dell Logo appears, then I hear the disc drive make some unusual noises followed by a period of a minute or so whilst the disc drive light remains on. It looks like it is actually doing something rather than stuck on.
The finally Windows starts up.
What is it, does anyone know, its being doing it ever since I have had the computer.
Is it performing a preboot system or hardware or maintaince checkup on a monthly basis, if so can I program it for when it starts.
Thanks .. Bill

A:Does my Dell Inspiron 3847 do a boot time check.

Hey Bill,
Try pressing F12 at boot up to get to the boot menu, then choose the option for "Diagnostics" to see if that produces any errors. Make sure you use the "Thorough" option. Based on what you've said here I'm not convinced it will, but I want to rule a hardware fault out as possibility.
You can also try, once loaded into Windows, running CHKDSK on your system.  A detailed explanation on that here:
technet.microsoft.com/.../ee872425.aspx
Basically, open command prompt as an administrator (right-click cmd.exe and choose "Run as Admin") then type in (without quotes) "CHKDSK /R C:"   then press enter.
You'll be asked if you want to run a disk check on next reboot, type "y" for Yes and then restart your computer.  If bad sectors are found the process may take quite a long time to complete - that's ok. Let it run. Once finished, continue to use your computer & let us know how it behaves.
Hope this helps!

My  friend got a  Dell inspiron 15 3000 series with windows 8.1  .It ran fine for 2 years. But  now  its not working.
The system show dell logo on starting and does not got past it  . its just stuck.
BIOS setting( UEFI) can be accessed using F2,   boot priority  setting key F12 do not work.
Even DELL dell epsa pre-boot system assessment test  works fine.
In some cases the problems disappears and the system works . But after restarting , it will get stuck with dell logo.

A:DELL logo stuck

General troubleshooting:
Unplug the system and remove or disconnect the battery.  Hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall both memory modules.
Try powering on with AC only - if it will, but won't if the battery is connected, the battery needs to be replaced.
If it still won't power up successfully after resetting the system as above, remove the hard drive. If you can then get into setup (F2 at powerup) successfully, replace the drive.
If you still can't get into the system after doing the above, try one memory module at a time until you find the bad module (replace it) or bad socket (see below).
If one of the memory sockets turns out to be the problem -- or the above yields no results, replace the mainboard.

I have a dell desktop that got a virus so I wiped it out and was going to reinstall it. Now when I start it up, it sticks on the dell splash screen and will not boot to the CD drive or hard drive. I put the HD in another computer and installed windows again on it but when I put it back in my dell, it still does not read it or boot up to it. So, I know it is not a bad HD.

I tried removing the battery from the motherboard for a few minutes to reset everything. That did not work. I also tried unplugging all other devices (usb's, cd/dvd drives, floppy drive, etc) and starting up. That did not work either.

I checked the BIOS settings and it is set to boot to the hard drive so I am completely lost and am up for trying anything! Thanks for any help you may have.

Hi,
I just got my Dell XPS 13 back from factory repair/service with all functions tested. I was running Windows 10 before, but the Dell repair service re-installed Windows 8.1 during the repair. So I installed Windows 10 (the free version from Microsoft for users of assistive technology) and everything went smoothly. But once I rebooted, the computer is stuck on the Dell logo and will not load the OS. I pressed F12 and ran the Diagnostics, and no error was found.
What can I do now ?
Thanks !!

So I remember a forum post saying that in order to use graphics cards in a dell 3847 you had to turn off secure boot. I remeber doing that in advance for when I would get a gtx 1050 for my pc, but ever since then I've had to press F10 during boot up and boot through "legacy" to get into windows. It will no longer automatically boot windows, even if I re-enable secure boot/turn off legacy oprom. Worse, I've read that pascal cards don't work when using legacy, is this true? And can I make my computer boot into windows automatically again?

Hi all,
A pretty nasty situation, given that this is supposedly a "premium" laptop.
I have here a one day old XPS 13 (9350) MS signature edition from Amazon, bought new. Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB storage, current BIOS (1.4.4) and drivers (updated right away), windows 10. Everything looked fine until I disabled power-saving features of the graphics (panel self-refresh and power saving mode for games) and then tried to reboot while on battery: it gets stuck right on the Dell logo. Sometimes the rotating Windows thingy appears, but then freezes immediately.
Holding the power button and then cold-starting works. Rebooting does not. Loading BIOS defaults helped reboot once, after which I decided to re-enable the power-saving stuff (thinking that it is what caused it). The reboot after that did not take place either --  got stuck again. I don't know if there's any relationship between these power saving features and what's happening (could be a coincidence).
The problem does not seem to occur while on AC power.
Any thoughts? As I said before, this is an Amazon purchase, so I can return/exchange it within 30 days. Thanks.
