How do I restore files for Lenovo Thinkpad S540

Q: How do I restore files for Lenovo Thinkpad S540

Hi, I had an accident with my laptop and althought they fixed it for some reason one of the two word files I was working on is lost. I dont know if may be in my panic I saved one over the other but the two recovery (.tmp files) that Windows created are both different versions of just one file. I tried to access previous versions but although that option is ON on my laptop there are no previous versions of these files (although I've worked on them for several days). Please help! Is there any other way I can try and restore the second file as well?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, Since two weeks my Lenovo Thinkpad screen flickers on the right side and on boot up or recover from stand by. This becomes pretty annoying and I have updated all the drivers and also upgrading to Windows 10 didn't work neither. The warranty was due June this year, so I don't know that if I have to repair it that it will cost money. But I think it's strange for a screen to be broken in one year and 3 months. If you perhaps know a solution for this or know how it will be handled by Lenovo if I send it away for repairs please tell me. Yours faithfully, Joost Kolkhuis Tanke

Hey there,I have the Thinkpad S540 with the i7-4510U and the Radeon HD 8670M. The Laptop is running very hot (in idle 70°C and on load about 100°C). I've replaced the thermal compound with arctic mx 4 but still the same temps. Also, the Laptop doesn't charge. If i calibrate the Battery it charges for about 2-5% and then it stops again. Charging works fine in macOS but Windows has these problems.

Hello dear Lenovo Community,my first problem is Wifi connection. I nearly get no Signal. If i am sitting 2 meters away from the router i have 1 bar and if i put it directly onto the router i get 3/4 bars. In my room it doesn't find any wifi at all. I heard this is a common issue so there might be a fix for that.My next problem is the boot process. It shows me the Thinkpad Logo for like 5-8 seconds before it even starts to boot. I've tried erasing the ssd, updating the bios and resetting the bios to defauls. Nothing helped.

A:2 Thinkpad S540 Problems

Welcome to the CommunityRegarding the wifi issue. Are you able to disassemble the laptop (remove base cover)? The wlan antennas wires can be routed with too sharp angles, this decreases the sensitivity dramatically. Just reroute them, straighten the angles. Also, check out the wires connectivity correctness.

Hi all, Since a few days I have been suffering from a keyboard problem.Sometimes the keyboard doesn't register my strokes, despite the fact that I'm pushing normally. In fact when it happens the amount of pressure doesn't seem to matter. Sometimes it is a letter and sometimes it happens with the Enter button. In any case it goes away after I keep pressing for 5/6 times. I was hoping that anyone here could provide me with a suggestion as to how to fix this problem. Kind regards, Niels

A:ThinkPad S540 hardware question

Hi Ogioto, welcome to the forums.

I don't have that machine, but I think that the best way to know about this is to go to the support site of this model, and check under "Documentation" the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Here I found it.  Check it out to see if it gives you a better idea on what does machine has on the inside.

There is also the system service parts documents that helps you see a ripped off view of the machine.

I hope this helps.

Hello everybody, I have a thinkpad S540 with an Intel Wireless-N 7260 since 1 year ago. As it happens with another users, sometimes the wifi does not work apropriately (the connection cannot be established), and I have to reboot to fix the problem. I have updated to WIndows 10, installed the lastest Intel Wireless drivers and the issue is not fixed. Besides, I noticed that my laptop has not wifi-ac (5 Ghz) capabilities. Therefore, my questions are the following: 1) Is it possible to replace the internal intel Wireless-N 7260 card for a faster -and more reliable- Wifi-ac card?(I have noticed that the user manual explain how to replace the intel Wireless-N 7260 card, but I assume that it means replacing a damaged card by another equal wireless-n 7260 card) 2) In replacement parts of lenovo S540 I have found the following Wifi card:"PN: 04X6010 2 Intel Wilkins Peak 2 7260 2*2 11ac+BT4.0 HMC Module".Can I replace the internal wireless-n card by this one? Will it fit on my laptop? Must I add an additional antenna for 5 GHz band? How? 3) In internet seems to be another 3rd-party solutions more cheaper than PN 04x6010. Do you recomend some of them realiable for me? 4) If replacing is not feasible due to the lack of an 5 GHz antenna, another solution is to replace my intel wifi-n card by another more realible one (but also wifi-n). Greetings! I have i thinkpad s540 i7 version which I aquired from a friend who said it was broken and he did not know how to fix it. I noticed the battery was not working so I assumed it was dead and replaced it with a new one. The new battery is recognized by windows 10 but is not charging. I got an error message saying it is depleted and needs replacing, even if its brand new (<1 % wear level) If I disconnect the AC power, the computer dies immediately. It does not start on battery power either. This is also independent of OS (tried with linux and nothing at all). Lenovo settings app is installed and reporting the battery in poor condition. Although the USB is set to be able to wake the device, after a few hours this is not the case (the computer is connected to an external keyboard, mouse and monitor. Often when I want to resume after sleep, it makes sounds as if it is already on but nothing happens ("i" in thinkpad logo flashes softly) and a hard reset is necessary to restart it. other symptoms include fn key LED and mute LED is always on. The buttons are functional but the LEDs remain on at all times. These symptoms is leading me to believe that something in the power management control is bad (hardware side). Hi Everyone,

I just received my new Lenovo ThinkPad S3 Yoga 14" UltraBook (http://shopap.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/yoga-series/yoga-14/).

I do not want to start using my new laptop until I update to Windows 10. I am aware that in order to update I need to click on the 'Windows Icon Button' in the taskbar, at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. From here I am supposed to enter my email address...

However here is the challenge, after installing all available Windows Updates, said button has DISAPPEARED!

I have downloaded and run the win10fix_full.zip file as suggested at CNET (http://www.cnet.com/au/how-to/how-to-get-the-windows-10-upgrade-icon-if-its-missing/).

After trying all of the fixes all I can say is that one 'fix' managed to crash my new computer to the point of requiring an immediate shutdown and a memory dump!

I am now thinking that the best course of action may be to return my new laptop to factory default settings.

Can anybody suggest how I can go about returning this unit to factory default settings? I don't just want to erase files, preferences, etc., instead I want to return Windows 8.1 to it's factory issued state.

Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

If you're logged in click on the Start button and type "Refresh" (w/o the quotes). One of the "finds" should be "Remove everything and reinstall Windows"; click on that.

If you can't log in check your documentation. If it doesn't have that little "Lenovo" or "OneKey Rescue System" button beside the regular power button then there must be some key or key combination you need to press upon power on.

Can you boot to Safe Mode? If so, you can refresh Windows 8 which should keep files, but reset settings and such.

Hi Everyone,
In an attempt to fix this I first followed the 'Remove everything and reinstall Windows' instructions at the link below -

How to refresh, reset, or restore your PC - Windows Help

The above procedure did indeed restore my computer to the original Factory defaults.
However unfortunately when I booted up, entered my initial details, and got to the Desktop the 'Upgrade to Windows 10 button' was still missing.
My next port of call was to install all Windows updates, about 750 Megabytes, which I did. Then after several reboots, related to the updates, I once more returned to the Desktop only to find the button missing again!
I have now downloaded the Windows 10 iso from the link below, and will post back with my progress -

After installing updates (including BIOS) via the Lenovo service under Windows 10 64-b and reboot, the laptop does not turn on (the BIOS boots). Update from 15.05.17. Power from the laptop did not turn off. The reason for the failure is an update from Lenovo. How to solve a problem? P.S.Laptop when pressing the power button turns on (the backlight of the key lights up, the cooling fan turns on, reacts to the on / off buttons). My S540 takes quite a long time to start booting. The boot process in itself, once started, is fast as it should be, but before the lenovo logo and the spinning circle appears it takes 30 seconds where the screen is on but black (only the background light is on). this problem is OS independent, it was the same when windows 7 was installed, right now win 10, the original build, is installed. Maybe related: I cannot upgrade to win 10 anniversary. After the reboot which should start the upgrade, the notebook is in the state described above for around 2 minutes and then shows the blue troubleshooting page. when you click "continue booting into windows 10" it does this without installing the anniversary update (win 10 1067). S54016GB RAMSSD Samsung Evo 1TBbitlocker encrypted (using the hardware encryption of the SSD)

Hello everyone There have been plenty of threads about poor wifi performance on Lenovo S540.  But this is a new story. It is not poor, it is unhealthily terrible. I purchased S540 in summer 2014 and yes, wifi was weak but tolerable. Around 1 month ago, without a notice and without any intervention from my side, it became unhealthily weak. I mean it, 1 meter from router is more or less fine (three bars out of five), 2 meters  - weak and unstable, 3 meters - it doesn't even see the network. No barriers between router and laptop, of course The problem is not with router. That's because I tried two different routers, two different ISPs (and iphone hotspot just in case)- same story in every instance. Also, other devices in my family - laptops, smartphones and tablets - work just fine with existing wifi network. The problem is not with specific wifi card. I replaced wifi card (Intel N 7260) with the new one (nb. and probably lost guarantee by that) but nothing changed at all. The problem is not with software. I have all latest drivers and BIOS, and I also tested the problem under Windows 10 and under Ubuntu liveUSB - absolutely same symptoms, 3 meters from router = no wifi networks seen. P.S. LAN internet works perfectly fine, problem is only with wifi. From the above testings I conclude that problem is with hardware, but not wifi card - is it possibe? I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas on how I should... So I got a new laptop, a Lenovo s540-14IWL. Everything is great about it, other than the fact that the bezel is not glued properly to the screen at the right and left edges.I had this problem on the original one I got and also on two replacements. I decided to keep it because the price was very good and I really like it. The other options were not nearly as good and as a programmer I need to have a computer all the time. I was wondering if someone could offer some help?I got 2 options:- Live with it.- Send it to the lab under warranty as it's only about a week old (Problem is I saw their work on my cousin's laptop and it wasn't good). Can it cause any further damage to the computer if I leave it like that. To the eye it's not as bad as it looks in the picture. One important note: If I hold it with my hands it will glue back and look perfect for a few minutes (When it was new it stayed for longer) until it goes back to its' original state. Thanks a lot for taking the time to read my post! Here are some pictures:When staring in front of the laptop:Right Side:Left Side:After touching it with my fingers for a few seconds:

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

I hope someone can help me.  I am having an issue with connecting my Lenovo ThinkPad X380 Yoga to a USB-C Dock.  I have installed all of the drivers and enabled Thunderbold 3 within BIOS, however only the USB, LAN connections work when I plug the dock into the Laptop.  The two displays that are plugged into the dock via Display Port do not work and the laptop seems not able to detect the displays.  Things I have tried: Plugged in only one monitor using both VGA and DP but still nothing.Uninstalled and reinstralled the drivers.Ran the Lenovo support tool to make sure all drivers on the laptop are up to date.Power cycled both the laptop and dock. As I said the USB devices plugged into the dock seem to work fine as does the LAN.  I have tried to update the firmware on the dock however I keep getting the following message: ThinkPad USB-C DP Hub version can't be checked! Please power cycle the Dock to try again. I have powercycled but still have the same message.  I am all out of ideas as to why the displays do not work.   Any ideas?

Hallo!

I'm getting conflicting information. The dock finder points me to this dock, and so did customer service chat dude. I've tried with two docks (returned first and got replacement). I don't think both are bad. Tried installing drivers from Lenovo. I want this dock to display two external 4k monitors. Anyone else in same boat?

Apologies if something similar has been posted, I just can't find the answer. We have a 5th Generation Thinkpad X1 Carbon connected to a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 dock. At the moment the display is mirrored using a VGA cable to connect to the dock. What we would like instead is to connect the dock to 2 external monitors with separate content on each monitor and the laptop display blank. I just can't figure out if this is possible, what might be needed, and how! Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello, all. First time poster. Thanks in advance for anything anyone can offer by way of an answer. My question is fairly direct: Will the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W work with my brand-new P43s Thinkpad? If this isn't the best or right one, which external graphics solution should I go with? I'm looking for some nice "oomph" for gameplay, etc. Kind of an after-purchase decision (sheepish grin). I have 16 gig of RAM and an i7-8565U. Thank you.Glenn
