I formatted my hard drive recently and ever since that, my laptop has a whole list of problems.
1) Windows would sometimes freeze during startup at the "Starting Windows" black screen. Even after getting to the desktop, sometimes it would freeze up there. I have to power shut down my laptop to shut it off.
2) When I pull up my power options to try to change the plan settings, it says "Your power plan information isn't available." I have been able to change it before though. I have tried a solution by going into cmd.exe and typing powercfg -restoredefaultschemes, but that didn't work.
3) When I create a new folder on the desktop and rename it, the folder still says "new folder" and can't be moved. It does show up after I refresh my desktop.
4) My antivirus shows that a malicious url was blocked, containing win32.blackbeard(?) and it came from the Skype.exe process. I've never had trouble with Skype before and now I can't even use it properly.
5) When I play the online game Maplestory, a message pops up saying "Windows must restart because Plug and Play service terminated unexpectedly" or "Windows must now restart because DCOM server terminated unexpectedly" and my laptop restarts.
6) My Windows Update doesn't work. I have it notifying me when updates are available but when I try to update, it fails.

Hello, I don't know where to begin. When I log on and my start programs run, I receive a couple different messages about something not being in the library. I would check right now before writing this, but I'm afraid my wireless connection would take too long to fix again. I've been having problems for the past week. Very irritating. Ever since I've gotten this thing (Gateway POS laptop), it's had a lot of problems. Wireless always cuts on and off for no reason, and the connection would seemingly just stop randomly, and nothing I could do would fix it until I restarted. It would always say that I'm connected, it just wouldn't actually do anything. Early last year, the whole harddrive crashed and there was nothing I could do to save it. I sent it to the company and they replaced it. When I was trying to fix it by their directions, there were all these clicking noises inside of the system.

Sunday night, that started to happen again. It's still running obviously, but it's not "working." It takes over 5 minutes to boot up now... before this, it was the fastest loading thing I've ever used. Also, internet usually doesn't work at all now. I turn it on and off until I finally get lucky. Everything runs incredibly slow and the comp will freeze up for a few seconds when I try to close a window or even click on the Start menu. Even on these lucky times, it will only last a couple minutes before the freaking thing just decides to stop working again.

I've used Ad-Aware, Spybot, AVG, and HouseCall. The latter did find some infected Java files (odd) but I deleted those, and now I can say that none of the programs find anything wrong. If anybody has some advice on what it could be, how it could be fixed, anything at all... I would be very greatful.

My computer was fine one day, switched it on the next and the Internet wouldn't load. The connection is fine so I wasn't sure what it was. After some research online (using my iPhone) I decided to remove my anti-virus in case that was preventing it from opening. It opened after that (I use Chrome) but it kept coming up with Shockwave plug in unresponsive message. So I then removed Shockwave, message is gone but still no joy.

I also removed Chrome thinking if I re-install it might help, this may have been a bad move because IE is so slow I can't get the page to load to reinstall. Aside from this everything is else is mega slow, I tried emptying recycle bin and it stays on the timer forever and never does anything. It also won't shut down, it stays on the logging off screen forever.

System restote doesn't work, I've done a malware scan, removed all spyware (as I read that can slow it down). I just don't know what else I can do. Sorry for the long winded post, just need some help! :(

One other thing to note is that several times when trying to shut down it comes up with the end now box for something called AUSUpdateWTitle, no idea what that is and it's not on the start up list.

I have Windows XP and for a while now I have been trying to solve this problem. When in windows explorer or in the run/browse box files are sorted by default according to the last file used. Has anyone ever heard of this or have any idea how to fix it? I thought it's possible that this was changable in the registry but I don't know what key would control it.

It makes a lot of extra work because you have to tell it explicitly to sort by name every time.

Hi all, Ive been using my computer in 1024x768 screen resolution for the past couple of weeks and now i would like to set it back to 800x600. But heres the problem. Every time i try to set it to that my screen just says "frequency out of range". Ive tried switching to different refresh rates for it but it still does not work. Only resolutions of 1024x768 or higher work. It used to work fine in 800x600. Whats with this thing? Why am i not able to use the resolution that every computer and monitor can support anymore?

Okay, basically, my computer no longer works at all. I sent this Facebook message to a friend of mine who is good with computers. I sent it Christmas night, when my computer still worked. It describes what was happening at the time:

"Symantec keeps saying it's blocked a malicious attack on my computer, so I click view details and it says "An intrusion attempt by [MY NAME]-PC was blocked". It keeps saying that I've had attacks blocked, and that something called "HTTP Zbot Malicious File Download" has been blocked. The statistics it gives are:

Risk level: High
Default action: Block
Action taken: Block
Attacking Computer: [MY NAME]-PC (192.168.1.2, 62929)
Destination Address: 222.122.60.186, 80
Traffic Description: TCP, 62929

What does this mean? How do I get rid of it? I don't have anything important on my PC, but what am I at risk of losing here?

Also, Windows Defender keeps deleting (and I think at first it quarantined) "TrojanDownloader:Win32/fakeinit".

So I kept deleting it/blocking it and it kept coming back so I typed these things into the search engine and none of the results were helpful. Basically they said that TrojanDownloader often posed as antivirus software and then once downloaded installed lots of spyware and such on your computer. They gave some files it posed as, and suggested deleting them but none of them were on my computer (well none of them came up when I searched, anyway).

A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.

Hi,

I recently got a virus on my laptop that tried to get me to download fraudulent antivirus software. I followed instructions and ran SmitFraudFix in safemode. That helped a lot, but it came back, so I searched some more and followed a topic here from April where the user had the same problem. So, I've run the SmitFraudFix again, then I used SuperAntiSpyware. After that, I couldn't boot up my computer normally, it always stopped at an options screen where I could pick the different ways, so I started in the "last normal config" and it has been okay starting since.

However, the internet no longer works. There are no Network Connection icons in the system tray, Wireless or Local. When I go to My Network Places, there is nothing there except a butterfly icon that says "My Web Sites on MSN" Also if this is relevant, in my systray the time is in 24 hour mode and it the words "Virus Alert!" are immediately to the right. Clicking the words only brings up the date and time adjustment.

I left my computer on over night and when i came back and tried to use it, the computer wouldn't respond. My first thought was to just move the mouse and bring it back but nothing happened. I turned it off by pushing the power button and restart the computer but nothing happened when i turned it back on!! No splash screen no BIOS or POST beeps.

I tried unplugging the Hard drive and powering it up but i got no error beeps.
So i took the RAM out and powered up again and got the error beep i was looking for. SO...do you guys think its the RAM that went bad?

*i did try to switch the RAM to a different slot but i had the same problem not beeps, no POST. (the computer is relatively new; How could the RAM just die like that?)

I have set my computer to boot up every day, via the BIOS, for the past year and its been working perfectly.

However, recently it has started not to do so. What could be the problem?

Could it be the computers battery that runs the internal clock?

Any ideas?

The big question.. What did you do to break it?

Is the setting still there? Try re-applying it.

If the battery was dead, then it should be forgetting all kinds of other settings too, giving you errors at startup.

Hi,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-AR51J running windows vista. It came with IE7 installed but I have had constant issues with tabs freezing for ages for no reason etc. I sometimes don't even have to be doing anything with IE7 then if I try to switch tabs ALREADY OPEN or explorer windows and it freezes again??? Same thing happens when I click links in IE7 like for instance page numbers when on forums etc...

I always update windows and also Sony's own updates automatically.

So my question is this...

Why on Earth does IE7 perform so badly?
I know it is IE7 and not something else because I have firefox installed as well and when I use this its perfect, NEVER any freezes when performing the same tasks?

I know the obvious thing to say just use Firefox all the time but there are a few situations were firefox is not suitable. e.g. until quite recently firefox was not suitable for eBay sellers and did not even have a toolbar.

I just don't understand how Microsoft can produce such an appaling program given the fact that they make windows as well? You should expect it to be the best option by far yet firefox exposes IE7 for what it is...A SHAMBLES. The company behind firefox should come up with an office suite so I can get rid of Office as well.

I recently built myself a new computer and installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on it:

All of the parts are brand new. The problem is that I installed the Adobe CS6 Master Collection and every time I try to use Premiere (on any new or old projects) and make any video edits - the entire computer freezes. Sometimes it takes a few minutes, sometimes it takes nearly an hour of video playback and/or editing to freeze. I am going crazy trying to figure out what is going wrong. I do not get any bluescreen errors or anything in the Event Viewer (other than a notice saying the computer shut down improperly due to the fact that I had to hold in the power button). The odd thing is that it seems to work in Safe Mode every time, thus making me think it's a software issue. The other strange thing is that I've left Premiere open all day and night and the computer would not freeze - it only seems to happen when I'm making edits or playing back video.
What I have tried thus far:
Reinstalling Windows (with no antivirus or extra programs)
Updated Adobe Premiere CS6 (I also tried CS5)
Installing Windows Updates
Windows Memory Diagnostic (no errors found)
Updating all drivers

I actually solved the issue by updating my BIOS to the latest version. Now Premiere no longer freezes. I guess there is an issue with SSD's on the SATA III ports.
All is taken care of.

Received an alert that Adobe Reader had fixed a security flaw in version 6.0, and they suggested upgrading to the latest version. I uninstalled Adobe Reader 6.0 and downloaded and installed Adobe Reader 7.0 (free version) with all upgrades.

Today, when I booted, the computer kept freezing up and I had to artificially shut down. I took everything out of START-UP, using msconfig, but it still froze.

I reopened in SAFE MODE, ran a virus check with AVG trial version .... no problem. So I rebooted and uninstalled Adobe Reader 7.0, reinstalling Adobe Reader 6.0.

Anybody have any idea what sort of conflict I might have? Running Windows XP Home, 2nd SP and all subsequent updates.

Have almost always gotten successful solutions using this board and will appreciate any help to achieve solution. Would like to go back to the newer Adobe Reader, if I can figure it out.

(Please note: Answers need to be addressed as if to a kindergartener -- I am not totally computer illiterate, but I am not that well-versed ... what I do is usually by intuition.)

Are you still having this problem?

If so, when you reinstalled Adobe Reader 6.0, is it working okay? When you downloaded version 7, was it direct from the Adobe website, or the updater in the Help menu of Adobe Reader?

If it was the website, did you install the Yahoo and PhotoShop extras? If so, unless you really want them, you can untick them.

There are some updates that require version 7.0 already installed, such as 7.0.1. You didn't try them did you?

Im getting occasional computer freezes but the mouse works. the screen doesn't change and it takes a minute or 2 before it comes back. last night during a freeze the computer shut down and wouldn't restart without using the bootdisk.
Ive done a system restore. VAIO has a warning and wants to troubleshoot. when I did it came back with a problem with the Microsoft teredo tunneling adapter. it tried to reinstall the driver but was unable. I found and installed a driver myself. the troubleshoot now comes back with problem with Microsoft teredo tunneling adapter #2, and it trys to reinstall that driver but cannot
Ive done a full dskchk 2 times and no problems come up. Ive installed and done disk checkup and it says no hard drive problems. however HDD scan report finds UltraDMA CRC errors.
last month I had the dllhost virus removed and the computer seemed to be fixed, Im wondering if the virus corrupted my hard drive or something in my operating system.

a friend of mine has been having problems with windowsclick, getting redirected to all kinds of sites, i helped her out and managed to get it to stop by using combofix and MBAM but since the process was very long and complicated (at least for me ) i wanted to ask you if i can be sure everything is gone and safely give back the laptop to its owner or should i post the logs of combofix and MBAM so you guys can have a look at it?

When I start my computer it freezes up after anything between 2 - 10 minutes. During the time when everything is frozen, the cursor still works until I get a BSOD.

From my research so far it could be anything from out of date graphics drivers (Which I cannot update without getting an error), a problem with the RAM (I cannot run Memory check without getting an error) or outdated firmware for my OCZ Agilty 3 SSD (Which according to the dates on the website is actually up to date.

I seem to have too many issues now and really have no idea where to start.

Any help on this will be massively appreciated.

Sorry if I've missed anything on this post. Please let me know if I need anything else and I'll dig out the info.

Firstly i would suggest to remove all Mcafee Anti-virus/security scan programs as it is well known
to cause BSOD issues. Also uninstall Kaspersky. Two security programs running at the same time
can cause issues.

After beening pestered to the point of no return I downloaded Adobe Flash Player 11. Now no matter what I do the computer keeps freezing. reimage scanning states that the list below have crashed recently.

1. Microsoft-Windows-capi2
2. Microsoft(c) Register Server
3. Windows Backup
4. System Restore

Crashes occur mostly with videos and games. I have updated all drivers, etc....

Hello, I am new to these forums, and I don't even know if this is the right place, but I didn't find any place for posting crashes that are not BSODs. So if I am on the wrong place, sorry
Anyways, I've seen another thread about a similiar problem here, but I tried everything on it.
Here's everything I tried doing:Clean reboot from Safe Mode
Boot Windows with last good configurations
System Restore (until I found out that my notebook doesn't support that )
System Recovery (I was dumb enough to format the recovery partition for extra space )
Verified Drivers (With verifier.exe, found 1 "bad" driver, removed it, but still didn't work.)
Anti-Virus (found 1 virus, removed it, still nothing.)
Msconfig.exe and disabling servers/startup applications

What I'm yet considering to do:Uninstall the Microsoft C++ Redistributables (But I can't do that since Windows Installer is required and it isn't available on safe mode)
Dust Out notebook fans
Use a Cooling Pad

What happened before it started doing that:
I was going to play a game that needed some C++ Redistributables, so I installed those.
While I was playing, the computer fade out, out of nowhere. That didn't amuse me because every time I "try" to play this game or any resource-intensive games, it does that, to prevent overheating. The problem was with the service "Application Virtualization Client"
I disabled it.
of course I know it's not THAT what is causing the error, it's something that this service was trying to read but failed and then made my computer freeze, but I'll leave it disabled until I found out what is it.

When in regular operation, I can't open a program without the computer hanging - sometimes for several minutes. Sometimes it freezes or hangs for so long that the computer becomes unusable. There is no specific program that makes it do this, it is as though any process that my computer runs makes it hang. It will hang in increasing intervals until the computer becomes completely unusable.
Startup takes several minutes longer than it should. This includes the time it takes from the time I push the ON button to the time I get to my password screen as well as the time it takes to boot after I enter my password.
I cannot run a quick malware scan let alone a full system scan. The computer will hang, freeze and become unusable.
In SafeMode everything works well (I am writing to you from SafeMode right now). The only issue while in SafeMode is that I cannot run a complete, full system Malware scan using Malewarebytes. It hangs/freezes in the same place, roughly 5 minutes into the scan and I have to restart in order to use my computer again. I can run a complete quick scan while in SafeMode.
I know there is a virus/trojan/spyware etc, I just don't know what it is or how to fix it. I think I had the blue screen of death only once and is not a common occurrence with this issue.

It does this like once an hour at least. Once it's frozen, it's frozen until I manually power off.

I tried scanning with spybot twice, and avira twice, though it froze on me befor it completed. I'm defragging now, but it will probably freeze before it's finished too.

Any advice?

My problem is that my desktop computer has started freezing a few minutes after booting. The computer works fine, however, in Safe Mode. I have already tried turning off all the startup programs using msconfig, but to no avail. The problem persists even after reformatting.

Here is some information about my computer:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X48 DS4
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16 GHz
RAM: 4x2GB Mushkin 996599 DDR2 1066
Graphics Card: ASUS ATI Radeon HD 4870
HDD: Seagate ST3250410AS 250GB 7200RPM

I built the computer in 2008 and it has run solid as a rock up until now. The CPU is overclocked to 3.8 GHz (I have an OCZ heatsink, so don't worry) and the RAM is manually set to the advertised frequency and timings (the BIOS default settings were wrong). I haven't tried poking around with my hardware yet, as I figured it would be better to get some opinions first.

Hi,

My computer randomly shuts itself off. It can happen after 15 minutes or up to 12 hours.

When I turn it on again it always freezes when the Windows logo appears, (Win7 and the part where the four dots become the logo).

If I wait for about 10 minutes, the computer will start up again, and we're back at the beginning again.

(Edit: A new symphtom is that sometimes when I reboot, without it crashing, it freezes on "Starting Windows" as well.)

Any ideas?

I'm running 64bit Windows 7 on an Acer Aspire 5742G-6846 (specs posted below). As the title suggests, when I turn on my computer, it will start, login, but then it freezes. I can access everything fine in safe mode. I have already tried turning everything off at start up, uninstalling Rainmeter (which was giving me issues earlier), running ccleaner and malwarebytes. Hello all, I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop that uses Windows Vista Home Basic that freezes shortly after I turn it on and log in. I can still move the cursor, but I can't click anything or type anything. It works fine in Safe Mode. I am in Safe Mode with Networking right now. I am suspecting that it is something to do with the drivers since it works fine in Safe Mode. For my first troubleshooting method, I would like to disable all Startup items I possibly can in System Configuration. The problem is that I don't know what I can disable and what I cannot. I don't want to mess anything up.

The origin of the problem: One night I was playing a computer game, not in a web browser, just on the computer, then I went to bed. I didn't turn off the computer, I just shut the top. About 5 minutes later, I heard the Windows start-up music. I thought to myself "What the...?" I opened the top and it said something like, "Windows had to restart due to an error." I click OK and proceeded. After about maybe a minute, it froze and I had to shut it off manually by holding down the power button. Now every time I turn it on and log on, after about a minute, it freezes. I can still move the cursor, but can't click or type anything.

If disabling everything in the StartUp tab of System Configuration doesn't fix the issue, I would like to disable all the items that I possibly can in the Services tab.

I am writing this while my computer is in safe mode. After I click on an account when I boot normally, it will freezes a few moments later on the desktop.

I have an HP DV8 that is about three years old. Here are the specs:

I've tried doing the boot repair by pressing F8 during startup and it said everything was working perfectly fine.

Hi I've just recently started experiencing freezing during start-up. It started during a game of League of Legends, and has been progressively getting worse. It's to the point where it'll take minutes to log on and when it does eventually get to my desktop the task bar will have a loading symbol when I scroll on it. I've tried disabling all start-up programs, and services in MSConfig. Updated all drives, uninstalled newly installed programs, restored to a week prior to the freezing and still nothing. Any suggestions?

Hi there, have you tried removing other peripherals like extra HDD's or DVD/CD drive? might be an idea to just start your machine with only 1 drive, your memory and Video card. If it still does that, try starting the machine with less memory, if you have more than one module of ram.

First time poster and any help is greatly appreciated.

A few days ago my computer (HP Pavilion a1040n - 630 Pentium 4 w/ 1 Gig RAM and running Windows XP Media Center Edition)started to freeze up a few minutes after booting up into Windows successfully. Everything became "Not Responding", even the Task Manager became "Not Responding" and I had to do a hard shut down. I can boot into Safe Mode w/ Networking and I have run all the virus and spyware scans I have... Avast!(Free Antivirus), AVG (Free 9.0), Malwarebyte's (Anti Malware) and Super Antispyware (all with current updated versions) with no findings of any malware or viruses. The Super Antispyware did find its usually listing of cookies but after deleting them and rebooting, I still had the same problem, no difference. I then used MSconfig to stop 2 applications lauching at startup that I had found on this forum have no real neccesary reason to be launched at startup and had caused other users to have issues with freezing... "HP Image Monitoring" and "Updates for HP". Still no change in the problem after reboot.

I have turned off my "CD Emulator", have ran the DDS report and will post it below and even run a "Hijack This" report (but don't know what I'm looking at). Download StartDreck http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/StartDreck.zip

Unzip to its own folder and start the program:
Press 'Config'
Press 'mark all'

Uncheck the following boxes only:
System/Running Process -> List Modules
System/Drivers -> NT Services
System/Drivers -> NT Kernel- and FS-drivers
Press 'OK'

Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file (default is the same folder as the application)

Post the log in this thread.

well where do i start, firstly then my spec:
asus a8n-sli-se
amd athlon x2 3800
nvidia geforce 7600 gs
4 gb ram??
win xp

The first problem begins with the ram, i recently installed 2 new sticks of ram identical to the sticks i have in, upping my ram from 2gb to 4gb, this actually seemed to slow my pc down!!!! and windows will only recognise 2.75 gb of ram????

secondly my pc has slowed right down lately, ive run virus checks but nothing turns up??

and last but not least, im trying to install microsof flight sim x, i have all the system requirements but when i click intall i get D:\setup.exe is not a valid win32 application.
ive checked the disk, is not damaged, other disks work in my drive, ive tried copying the files to my hard drive and running but after initially working the install fails half way through,

im completely stuck, please help guys, heres my hjt file

ok first of all. i come to my computer and i see one of those fake "click hear to remove potential spyware" things that is actually malware itself. i ignored cuz i am smarter than that and i instead ran norton internet security. it told me it had removed a spy ware called "spyquake" but immediately after i dismissed the dialogue box i got a message saying that spyquake had been installed. i went to my start menu and sure enough "new programs installed" it was spyquake. i went to add/remove and removed it from there, and ran norton again. and again it said it removed it. then i tried my internet explorer and no response. nothing happened but my task manager displayed that internet explorer was running, but i couldnt see it anywhere. soon my task manager became disabled as well "by administrator." and the "shared" folder for limewire is full of about 700 things i never downloaded. they are things like cracks and patches for games and such, and i cant delete them because they're "in use." it was only in the past hour i discovered that netscape navigator was unharmed by all of this, and this is where i say HELP!!!!!!!!! i do not think that is is spyware quake but just spyquake. please respond quickly because i take this laptop to college on sunday!!!

atmclk.exe is definitely adware and it is related to spyware falcon and that family of browser hijacks. My computer has not been "normal" in quite some time. I am under the assumption that I have the "Conficker" worm. 'Though my knowledge of computers only goes barely beyond skin deep. I am aware that some of these problems might not be related, I just want to paint a full picture.... I have Windows XP 32 bit and use Mozilla Firefox.First off I can't get rid of AVG. I have been unhappy with it for quite some time and have been unable to get rid of it. I understand this is a common problem. I did attempt to delete it from the registry. I am aware that this might have been a mistake....I can't download anything from Microsoft.com, softpedia, and seemingly random other sites, very often I would have been trying to download something to help rectify the situation. They never work. It directs me to a page resembling as if I didn't have connection to the internet. "Unable to connect"Internet Explorer has not worked in quite some time, and I can't download it (any version) or uninstall it.My CD burner will ONLY work using BurnAware... and I've tried numerous. *not sure that's entirely relevant*Fairly often, I would say at least once a week, I receive a phony prompt from an even phonier program prompting me that my computer is infected. One more thing... This used to happen a lot, but hasn't in quite some time. And just recently began doing it again. When I do a Google search, I can no longer click on the links that Google presents me. When I do I am immediately redirected to a different site... I can copy and past the URL. I just can't click the link directly from my google search page. The website I get redirected to is not always the same, and it appears to redirect a few times before actually deciding to go to a page... Here are some of the pages it takes me too.... The search I used for the first couple examples was "meow".
