Is it possible to get 0 ms ping on speedtest.net via Wi-Fi

Q: Is it possible to get 0 ms ping on speedtest.net via Wi-Fi

Has anyone achieved a 0 ms ping via Wi-Fi on speedtest.net's closest server? I just began my first day of the semester on my university and decided to do a speed test out of boredom. The server I'm doing the speed test is at LA while the university is at Long Beach (~30 mi distance). When I ping the university's access point (default gateway IP) I get 1 ms using command prompt. How could speedtest.net yield 0 ms ping while pinging the router takes 1 ms? Weird lol. Probably a mistake by speedtest.net

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Could be a glitch or more likely your University hiding certain information to you. Does it happen to all connection tests? My guess is that the university may have redundant routers servicing clients so that if one fails there is a backup. By doing so the routers would create a phantom IP and MAC address that both would respond to meaning possible causing a false identity to appear for speedtest.

Just my guess but in real world terms no it shouldn't be possible. Remember that the speedtest is to the Uni's router and not to your machine

I've recently switched to a 1000M plan with a local ISP, I know results may vary a little bit and I don't expect to ge the full speed, but my recent speedtest results have shown 300-600Mbps depending on the time of day that I run the tests, which is not even close to what is advertised.
Actually, in the four and a half days I've had the service I've only tested once where it went over 600M, the rest of the time it's around 290 to a little under 400M when connected directly to my laptop.

The ISP has their own testing site which downloads a small 600kb file and runs it on your computer on that black screen window, while opening up a new tab in the browser to show results. There are separate tests for their 100m service, 500 &1000M as well as a separate one for Mac users.
I don't know what type of test this is but it shows the speeds are 850-950Mbps. That's between 200-300+Mbps difference with their site and speedtest.net

I've since tried Fast.com, Speedof.me and a local internet exchange site, all showing similar speeds which are several hundred Mbps lower than the ISP site.  Today the independent site tests were between 290-420Mbps while their site tests remained constant around 820-860Mbps.

I've talked to their customer service who were here today on a separate issue but they were no help and instead said they would have their I.T. guys contact me.  I don't know much about this stuff, I almost got a nosebleed trying to read... Read more

I have an XP era pc. It's a Toshiba laptop about 7 years old. It's always had all updates. I keep it clean and mean as much as possible using AdvanceCare System by iObit. It's got 1.2M of ram and I believe a 1.8Ghtz processor by Intel.

I have BLAST with Comcast and this newer Windows 8 pc by HP, a Pavilion desktop sometimes clocks over 50Mbps.

My question is the XP sitting right next to it is getting only about 19Mbps. Now I know there is a little downgrade of technology with the XP pc but shouldn't it be doing a little better than 19Mbps? Both are running wirelessly and the modem is only about 15-20 feet away. I have no problem with the new one. I am just questioning the XP speed?

Any thoughts. Any settings on the XP I need to be aware of? Thanks so much! ";-D jack

How reliable is speedtest.net and other broadband speed test sites? I don't have the fastest connecttion with at&t dsl 6 Mbps but it suites my needs fine. I find when I test with speedtest.ney my results vary alot anywhere from 3.00 Mbps to 5.00 Mbps sometimes even lower. With other test sites such as speakeasy and the one from Cnet the results seem much more consistent where I usually average around 4.85-5.60 Mbps.

The results seem to REALLY get wacky with speedtest.net depending who the test is "hosted" by. With speedtest.net you can change servers for testing but sometimes there are different hosts in one city. For example my closest server city is San Francisco, Ca. With "host" Unwired I get around 4.60 Mbps but "host" Monkey Brains (I think thats the name) I was getting .060 Mbps. Again with other test sites I seem to get much more consistent results. Also why is it with speedtest.net I can pick a server across the country for testing and I get faster download speeds than one that is only a few miles away?

A:speedtest my connection

That depends on a couple things...

1st-What kind of connection you are on...
2nd-What your location is...
3rd- What your ping is (Which I see on your speed test is a little high)
4th-If you were plugged directly into the router Via Ethernet...Your speed will increase drastically and your ping will decrease because of the loss of wireless lag (Which eats about 1/2 of your bandwidth...
5th- You will need to test to the nearest pyramid to you (To get the fastest speed test).
Here is a speedtest that I did from Glenwood Springs, Colorado to Amsterdam, The Netherlands:

This is how it should look (Except I'm on Fiber Optics through the GSCBN (WWW.GSCBN.COM) With Bandwidth from Internap Network Services.

I did a test on my download and upload speeds. The result was a deficient grade. I am on Verizon FIOS and was recently told that we were upgraded and received a new router. I tried an ap called speedtest optimizer and it came back with all kinds of issues in 3 catagories. It showed a variety of things, many that looked like regesetry items. There was no indication what was going to be done with those items. Is this a safe program to run and let it "FIX" things. WIndows 10, Dell Insperion 15.

I've been running speedtest on my laptop and it's been topping out at around 5mbps down, 9 mbps up, 40 ping on wireless, which doesn't make any sense. My phone on the other hand is getting speeds of 20+ down, 10+ up, around 40 ping as well on wireless.

When playing a game my ping is quite low, but will get random lag spikes into the 300+ range for no reason. It's gotten worse in the past couple of days. I haven't directly connected my laptop with an ethernet cable as I have no extras around, but I updated my wireless adapter drivers and it didn't do anything. Also scanned for malware several times. Any ideas?

Comcast is my cable/internet provider. I recently upgraded my up/down speeds. I if let speedtest choose it's own server based on ping (which is around 35~40) my speeds are not that great. If I manually choose a Comcast server (ping is 5~10) my speeds are where they should be based on the package I paid for.

Is this due to their "Powerboost" feature? Is there another way to check that will give me a more accurate picture on my speeds?

The Ethernet status report of 1 Gbps is the speed of the Ethernet port of your computer.

The reported Download and Upload speeds measured speeds. You need to contact your ISP to see if these speeds are normal for your connection. You get what you pay for.

Being rather new to real high speed Internet I sometimes play with the Speedtest.  It always seems to default to a Comcast server in Atlanta GA, giving me ping times usually around 60-90 msec and download/upload speeds on the order of 30/20 Mbps.  Having once accidentally (I've no idea how it happened) landed on a server in San Jose CA (much closer, I am only a couple of hundred miles away) I noticed strikingly faster speeds (ping <20 msec) and wonder w hat is going on.  Supposedly the program is searching for the "best" server but in fact if I don't fiddle with it it always lands on the Comcast one in Atlanta - it seems to think I am located in the East.  I am an Easterner by birth (born in Boston!) but have lived in the West for a good many years now (I even wear Wranglers and Justin boots and what back East would be called a funny hat, though those things are mostly dictated by the nature of my work).

Note I am not complaining about my Internet service, which seems to be more than adequate (for watching live sports for example) nor about Speedtest which I understand to be only an approximate tool anyway.  I also recognize that the "measured" speeds can vary quite a bit according to time of day and goodness knows what and even from minute to minute (right now we are having a terrific dust storm with howling wind, though it doesn't seem to be disturbing my Internet reception at all)

But there are some schools of thought on this overall pick the one location the furthest away from your location.  This will give you a good test of how your computer connects to the internet when servers are in other states or countries.

Also, getting outside of the gateway of your ISP.  Meaning take Time Warner, for example.  If you at peak speeds select the test from their site they will get you to the nearest location, and say your speed is great.  Which as long as you are in time warners side of the internet it is.  The issue is when you leave Time Warners gateway to get to the outside world.  That is when you get the slow down.  So Netflix or youtube, etc. will be slow when you cross that line.  (there are many other items that effect this as well but in general assuming all others are good).

The speed test is a certain size packet that is sent and sent again until a max throughput is maxed. Go here to read more about the in and outs of the frame to packet testing pool.

Also the testing server when used can be misleading.  If your connection has max latency then it will be low vs low latency.  Speedtest.net has more info about how it works.  Find that link here.

With some speed tests it will give you a site based on either your ISP or the first site open.  Sites like Speekeasy.net allow you ... Read more

When running a speed test on the speed test. net app from Ookla at the end of the test the report shows both the External & Internal IP addresses, when I run a test at my home and then at another house a few miles away, the same Internal IP address beginning with 192 is reported, is this possible? in other words is it just a coincidence?

Please note this is with regards to the INTERNAL address not EXTERNAL.

A:Same Internal IP address on speedtest.net

The 192 IP is a non-routable IP address which means you are connected behind a router. If you went to 20 houses and they all had a router, they could potentially all have the same IP (192.168.1.10 as an example). Now, if two computers connected behind the same router should never have the same IP address.

Hello guys,

This is the first time I post on here, I have a problem with my internet connection and I would like some advice.

Last month I changed my ISP, I saw a cheaper offer for the same speed as my previous ISP and went for it, but since then my internet speed has become really slow.

Both services are 10MB/sec, my previous one was cable, now it's through a phone line.

My internet speed is really slow, it takes a couple of seconds before opening any webpage as opposed to instantly as it were doing before. I play online games and my latency used to be between 30-50 ms on the servers I usually play in that are located in my timezone, and now I'm lucky if I go under 120ms. my download speed went down, I used to download files between 300k/s to 3mb/s, now I am lucky if I can ever hit 30k/s.

All this happened as soon as I switched ISP. Everytime I call tech support, they make me hold on the phone, close my internet connection and come back and ask me to check my speed on speedtest.net, which always gives me exactly 10.10 download and 0.68 upload. I get these exact numbers everyday at any time of the day, so I am starting to think that maybe this ISP is the one hosting the speedtests in my area. Before switching, I would keep getting different results depending on the day and time of the day.

In terms of how I maintain my computer. It is very clean, I do a full clean-up every week, I am a bit of a freak lol. Anti-virus scan every 2 days with Kaspersky internet s... Read more

So, I figured the smartest thing to do was to set up a wireless network.

So now, my desktop is connected to the internet via NETGEAR WG111v3 Wireless - G USB 2.0 adapter and NETGEAR WGR614 Wireless- G- Router.

I am on Cox broadband. I am using Windows XP. The USB wireless is a mere 15 feet across the room with a clear line of sight. My network connection speed shows 54 Mbps with excellent signal strength running at 96 % strength of signal.

My girl's Mac Book runs great.

My desktop runs like crap. Page loading is slow. Streaming video is jerky. Streaming music is problematic.

I know very little, but that seems fast to me.

So how come my pages are still loading slowly and I am still having problems with streaming audio and video?

Hello there TechSupport Forum!

I'm fairly inexperienced in Trojan Removal/Detection, however, I can normally tell by a simple SpeedTest if my network is being slowed by a Virus/Trojan.

The issue started about 3 or 4 days ago. I would normally format in this sort of situation, however, I don't have enough space to move a 4TB backup anywhere, plus the amount of reinstalling I'd need to do to do my regular day-to-day job.

If I go to edge, the home/start page which can be customised shows weather for Edinburgh! I have manually customised for London to fix this rather than let it auto detect. But it's weird. If I open the maps app it shows me on the map in the correct location!

its worth noting that I am seeing the same problem on my iMac when I go to speedtest.net so it's not a Windows problem but it's still left me scratching my head and also wondering why the maps apps on both machines get the location correct. Both connect via Ethernet.

on my iPad and iPhone which use wifi, launching the speedtest app gives the correct location/nearest server

I'd heard that speed test will find the server nearest where your internet provider's address is, I have to manually choose Manchester as that's the closest to me but automatically it can choose Maidenhead or elsewhere other than where I am.

speedtest.net is telling me the latency is around ~100ms and download bitrate of 220kbps..... whilst the modem is telling me the incoming is 1536kbps

Using firefox..

Does anybody have any idea's as to why this would be occurring???

Hi,

Strange request I know but I need the results from a speedtest which is from Italy to a Los Angeles, USA server.

So could anyone in Italy do a speedtest here www.speedtest.net and select the LA server. Then post back a link to the results please.

I would appreciate it.

Been working on this system for a few hours now and have tried a lot of different things to try resolve this issue. This is a Win7 x64 system that suddenly slowed down drastically on the Internet (probably after installing some crap from the internet).Have run TDSskiller and found rpcnet.exe running and removed that service completely, but the system is still pretty slow on the internet. Have tested the connection with another known good PC and connection upload speed capability is 3-5mbps while download capacity is 50mbps.On the problem machine the upload speed test fails 100% of the time and download is about 25mbps or half of the capacity.Have run malwarebytes and a number of other malware detection software and gone through each service manually (that's how I found RPCnet.exe). The system appears clean to me, but is somehow not.Tried several different Network adapters on the system (one Ethernet and one WiFi), both of which seem to exhibit the same problems with upload speed.I've run DDS and the log files are attached.Any clues as to what I might be missing would be much appreciated.*Moderator Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. DDS logs are allowed only in MRL. ~ Queen-Evie*

Hi there,
So for the past week, all of a sudden my internet has gone slow. So i checked on speedtest.net what my speed was and its fine: 11.47 mbps. Like
going onto websites that have a lot of images, scripts takes FOREVER to download, as towards bottom of browser a little bar says "waiting for ... cache/extension" etc . BUT going on simple page like Google works OK, still not as fast as it used to
be. [P.S. Family members using the internet on their laptops is fine, just for me it isn't]

I have been checking around other issues, and doing MANY things to figure it out, and now getting the hint that it may be to do with my DNS settings
or something (no idea about things like this) .. here are any details that might help any of you to understand more, as well as a list of what I've been doing :

I use Google ChromeComputer is Windows VistaI have cleared all cache, history, data, still not helpingMy IPv4 / 6 are both on automaticChanging it to manual and typing in IP addresses [found on other forums] still do not workI did do a ping.test, and I got this: Unable to test packet loss!I also downloaded 'Connectivity diagnostic' from Google extensions, and did a test, this came back: DNS resolution took longer than averageDisabled my AVG AntiVirus, but still doesn't workOpened cmd.exe, and typed ipconfig: this is the connection 4 settings [which is the main thing that counts i think]

A:Internet speedtest fast, but browsing extremely slow ?

Hi, yes I had tried that before, but it still doesn't work - However, I just started my computer in 'safe mode with networking' and my internet seemed to load fine, as well as other websites ?? But it still does not work, when I start it normally

So I uninstalled AVG completely. and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials. I thereby unchecked everything from the start up tab, restarted computer- and STILL internet doesn't work 0_0

As well as disabling all Startup items in msconfig, you should in addition try disabling all non-Microsoft services by selecting the "Services" tab and checking the "Hide all Microsoft services" checkbox then unchecking all remaining services
above. Reboot and check your connection. If you see improvement start re-enabling services abd start-up items in between reboots until you find the problem. See Vista section and "How to determine what is causing the problem by performing a clean boot"
section in:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

If no improvement is seen with all non-Microsoft services and all startup items disabled, check system files by entering "sfc /scannow" in an elevated command prompt (right click Command prompt shortcut and select "Run as Administrator").

I've been dealing with this issue for about a month now and can't figure out what is wrong. I've never had any problems with my internet speed in the past and speedtest.net is saying the speed is 2.7mbps which is what my speed has always been but I can't watch youtube videos or anything now without waiting for them to buffer for minutes at a time. And this is where I get confused: when I'm streaming a video the speed seems to max out at 100 KBps and usually sits around 50. But, if I download a torrent it gets up to the full speed and downloads no problem. And this problem is on every computer in the house...we have laptops and cellphones/ipods using the wireless connection plus a desktop using a wired connection and everyone has the same issues. I've tried searching for a fix for this but nothing has worked so far. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi,
It looks like I have malware that redirects the browser to a number of places I don't want to go nor where i typed. It happens on both Firefox and IE. I have Windows 7.
I have Kaspersky installed now as well as Malwarebytes. Neither can find the issues and fix them. I've run Kaspersky's TDSSKiller. It found 2 medium risks, which I deleted, but it didn't help.

When i look at Task Manager, I can often see ping.exe running at up to 70% of cpu.

Kaspersky just informed me that "C:\windows\syswow64\ping.exe downloading object hxxp://domain1for8.in/?site=8 containing Trojan program" Detected: Trojan-Downloader.JS.Iframe.com

When I look at Kaspersky report, it shows ping accessing bad places every 2 seconds or so.

Any help would be appreciated. I have a GMER.log that I ran last night.

Thanks!

Hi,
I posted in 'Am I infected' and was told to run the diagnostic program DDS and post files here.

I have malware that redirects the browser to a number of places I don't want to go nor where i typed. Places like *topsearches6*. It happens on both Firefox and IE. I have Windows 7.
I have Kaspersky installed now as well as Malwarebytes. Neither can find the issues and fix them. I've run Kaspersky's TDSSKiller. It found 2 medium risks, which I deleted, but it didn't help.

Kaspersky just informed me that "C:\windows\syswow64\ping.exe downloading object hxxp://domain1for8.in/?site=8 containing Trojan program" Detected: Trojan-Downloader.JS.Iframe.com
I get a lot of these types of messages from Kaspersky.

When I look at Kaspersky report, it shows ping accessing bad places every 2 seconds or so.

Another symptom, perhaps of a different virus/malware was it hid many of my files and almost all of my programs like Paint, MSOffice, etc.. I've since then unhidden all my files and they seem to be working fine.
Thanks for any help,
Andrew

Hi,

I think I have a strange sort of virus on my computer. Here is the list:

1)My computer takes several minutes to respond to any clicks when I am on the internet.  But all other applications are working ok.

2) When I am visiting a website for the very first time it works reasonably ok.  But a 2nd visit on the same website slows it down.

3) The first time i ran a speed test, it showed 10mbps but my flatmate's showed 20.  After following a post in bleepingcomputer and adjusting dns servers, removing trojans using adaware, mbs, roguekiller, tdsskiller, the ping test showed 16mbps but the net speed is still slow. (These worked only in safe mode).  Although better than what it eventually was, internet is slow for me!  Other computers work fine!

4) Unfortunately, i also did a combofix, i can look for the result and post it here if you like.

Please help!  I got loads of assingment to complete!

A:Internt super slow, Speedtest and 2 other computers working alright

Oh forgot to mention.. the worst affected programme is skyp!  If i turn the video, the images are heavily pixelated, voice breaks and finally after 2 minutes disconnects.

A:Can ping from router but unable to ping from client machines

I am able to reach out to the internet but unable to ping Click to expand...

ping is not required to have connectivity - - it is only a test & traceroute tool.

From the client, get a command prompt (or in Linux a Terminal) use nslookup google.com
If it returns the IP address of google, then you can ignore the ping problem

Hi, My friend did a windows recovery after he had a black screen when starting windows. Both IE and Firefox had slow connectivity yet I had him do a speedtest with speakeasy.net and it showed good speeds. He says the longer the computer is on, the slower is a surfing the internet. CPU usage is normal.

internet speeds:
2500kbps/400kbps

Could the recovery have messed with his computer networking drivers? He used a gateway recovery disk. His computer is either a gateway or dell computer.

A:After computer recovery - browser speed slow, internet speedtest normal

It might just be spyware/malware. I would check the add/remove programs list for any suspicious programs or toolbars and remove them.

So your computer is NOT a gateway or dell? Is that what your saying? If so, you can't just use any recovery cd on your computer. Let me know more details.

My brothers computer is doing something rather strange. If you try to view a website in Firefox, it won't display the home page until you refresh.

If you open a terminal window and type "ping google.com", it will tell you to check the name. Do it again immediately after, and it suddenly is getting replies from google. Ping again quick, and it still works. But if you wait a few minutes and try again, it fails.

My networking background makes me think there is something going on with an address cache (DNS?). I've just flushed it and if it works out, I'll report back and let you all know. But what else might cause this odd behavior?

I am setting up a new network at my home with a Dlink AirPlus Xtreme G Wireless Router DI624 and 2 cabled PC and 1 laptop. On one PC (PC1), I can ping the Dlink router (192.168.0.1) just fine and can ping the other PC and I have internet.

But from the other PC, I can't ping the router or get internet but I can ping the 1st PC and see its files and use its printers so I know that the network connection is working.

Here's the settings:
DHCP disabled
PC1: 192.168.0.30 - working PC
PC2: 192.168.0.15 - not working PC
Dlink: 192.168.0.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway is set to 192.168.0.1 for both PCs
Firewalls are disabled on both the PC's

when I ping the router 192.168.0.1 on PC2 I get Request Timed Out
when I ping PC1 from PC2, it replies just fine.

Anyone have any ideas why PC2 is a no go?

Thanks,
