External HDD automatically locked by BitLocker

Q: External HDD automatically locked by BitLocker

Hello,

I use Windows 8 on my laptop, and my external HDD got encrypted with BitLocker out of the blue.

I have never used BitLocker, I do not even have it on my laptop (Control Panel does not show any icon for BitLocker & forums say it is only available with Windows 8 Pro).

Therefore, I have no idea why Windows has locked my HDD, and I have no means of recovering this as I do not have any recovery key or password (since I have never used BitLocker in the
first place).

Please help.

Thanks,
Jignasha

Preferred Solution: External HDD automatically locked by BitLocker

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Manage-bde

This tool can be used to turn on or turn off BitLocker, specify unlock mechanisms, update recovery methods, and unlock BitLocker-protected data drives. This tool can be used in place of the
BitLocker Drive Encryption Control Panel item. For more information, see Manage-bde.exe Parameter Reference. at www.TechNet(dot)Microsoft(dot)com/en-us/library/dd875513(v=ws.10).aspx

Try This:
manage-bde -status (Drive Letter):
Example: manage-bde -status C:
to check if Bitlocker lock your drive.
and
manage-bde -off (Drive Letter): example:
manage-bde -off C:
It none of its works, that means your HDD is blocked by another program, give us prompt massage or screen-shot, for further help.

I was using my work laptop at work and connected my personal USB external drive to the laptop. No problem. I used the external drive to show colleagues some pictures of my new house renovation and then disconnected the drive.
However, when I reconnected the drive to my own personal laptop at home, it informed me that it was locked by bitlocker and needed a recovery to unlock it!
At no time was I requested to bitlocker it or indeed informed that bitlocker was locking the drive. This totally sucks as I have precious family photos on the drive and now cannot access them!!
Can anyone help?

i have an external HDD that is locked by bitlocker and won`t open
i didn`t lock it i just went on section that asks for password and cancel the process and my HDD worked just fine but after i disconnected it and connect again it has been locked and when i try to open it says :

Bitlocker (D:)
the bitlocker encryption in this drive isn`t compatible with your version of windows. try opening the drive using a newer version of vindows.

i`m pretty sure it didn`t encrypt my drive cuz encryptions take time and my drive is 1 TB
i`m using windows 8.1 and tried 8 & 7 ...even XP :(
i have really important stuff in it
plz tell me what to do :'(

A:Unable to open external HDD that is locked by bitlocker

Farid Rahimi,
If you haven?t already, remove the drive from whatever port you have it plugged into and try another port.
Another thing you can check is to see if there are any new updates available for your BIOS.
Take a look at any changes that it might list and if there have been any changes to the TPM, go ahead and run that update.
You?ll also want to make sure that your system settings are all correct for the port you?re using.
Hope this helps!

Hi I am using a Window Surface and I just got my external drive locked by Bitlocker WITHOUT having enabled it. I need to access crucial data, how can I unlock it? If I double-click on
external drive icon, a Bitlocker(D:) window pops up and if I click on "Load key from USB drive" then it says that "a valid USB key wasn't detected". The issue is that I NEVER set a key in the first place, I didn't even know what Bitlocker

Hi, Ive pretty much lost my key and recovery key for my bitlocker encrypted win7 partition. Im thinking of going into my winxp partition, doing a quick format on the encrypted partition which im locked out of, then using some sort of data recovery software to get the files on the encrypted partition back, will this work? or will the files I try to recover still be encrypted? also, if that would work could someone recommend some good hard drive recovery software, I dont mind if its not free.

Hello Everyone,

I have an issue that started with a rush to encrypt my Windows 7 - HP Pavilion g6 Notebook with Bitlocker.

I started and completed the encryption process on my C drive.

Upon re-starting my computer, I was taken to the HP Recovery Manager page and unable to access my desktop. At
this point, I'm unable to access any of my files and I don't know how to process or fix this.

Things I've done to try to fix:

-After research, I've successfully unlocked and disabled Bitlocker with my recovery key and password through the
manage-bde commands.
-I've done a system checkup, and it appears there's an issue with the Hard Disk Short DST - failure.
-I've run a CHKDSK scan, and there are alot of files corrupt, but I have no details on what's wrong.

I suspect that by encrypting my drive, I also encrypted the operating system.

Can anyone give me advice on what I should do next to try and get my computer working back to normal? .

Thanks!!

That's not why I'm here though. I had 5+ years of files, pictures, and family videos on the 2 hard drives which I think are now locked with bitlocker. I tried installing them as secondary hard drives in the new computer, and the computer thinks they are blank and wants to format them. Am I correct in thinking they are locked? My X1 died on me and, according to the sheet of paper that came back from the repair center, had its system board replaced. Unfortunately, when booting, I get a prompt for a bitlocker recovery key - and the key I have (confirmed with Microsoft) is not working. The key id shown on the recovery screen is also different. I've spent about 40 minutes on the phone now with Lenovo support, and haven't gotten anywhere - how can I get back into my machine? It would appear that, since the hard drive was not replaced, I should still be able to get in with my existing key, or am I missing something there?

Hey All,

Recently my company provided me with a Windows 10 SOE image as part of a UAT. The image includes Symantec Endpoint Encryption which utilizes Bitlocker for encryption.

I went through all of the motions with the C:\ drive to be encrypted and even printed the recovery key. Well, at some point I plugged in a few My Passport USB drives and they became locked by Bitlocker To Go. Everytime I try to unlock or click on these drives it asks for the 48-bit key which I don't have because I never was prompted to encrypt/lock these drives.

IT says that there are no keys stored on the servers for these USB drives and suggested that this would be a "local" encryption. However, they also stated that they wouldn't be encrypted unless I was prompted about it. So, there's this mystery about how these USB drives came to be locked.
I've been doing some research and the closest I've come is getting some output about the protectors:

Hey, I'm trying to configure my secondary internal HDD to lock with bitlocker, since acronis won't back it up well with truecrypt, but I still want to encrypt my OS drive with truecrypt since I don't have a TPM, and have to use a USB key to unlock it at startup, which I think is a vulnerability since anyone can just grab my USB and plop it into the computer. So , I was trying that out and moved [CUT and no copy] all my data from my laptop into the HDD and I don't know how but I locked my HDD using BITLOCKER unknowingly. I have not set any password for it and tried using the recovery key to unlock it but its useless. I checked the identification key and tried various methods to unlock it but its of no use. It says that the key is incorrect and not acceptable. I think the encryption was not done properly.

I have moved all my important data from my laptop in the HDD as I have brought a new PC. There are many important files and data in it . I will be in an extremely serious trouble if my HDD does not get unlocked OR if any of my data gets deleted.

Haven't been back here for awhile, and thankfully this is a little less serious than the virus issues I had years ago! Since approximately August 9th of this year, I have had occasional problems with photos being 'locked' (i.e. already in use or unable to be accessed), then automatically deleted after restarting my computer. It has probably only happened to around five or six photos from then until now, but because it seems to happen randomly and I have not been able to recover them, I'm concerned.

Typically it either happens after I have edited a photo in Photoshop, or *while* I'm editing a photo in Photoshop. The first few times I lost photos were all on the same day. I edited many photos, and most were fine, but three of them were edited in succession and afterwards, I couldn't preview them in My Pictures (or any other program). After I restarted my computer, the files I couldn't access were gone from my computer, though I didn't delete them.

Just a few days ago, this happened with another photo, but while I was editing it in Photoshop, it told me I couldn't save changes because it was already in use (but it wasn't to my knowledge). I closed Photoshop and decided to keep the photo the same without any touch-ups, but once again, I could not preview the file in My Pictures (although I could always see a very small version of the photo as a thumbnail). And when I restarted my computer, I lost the photo, and Search could not ... Read more

A:Photos randomly locked and then automatically deleted after Photoshop editing

Have you checked to find out whether they might have ended up in the recycle bin? Have you looked in the applications tab of Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) to see what might be running?

Your best bet is probably to go to the Malware Removal forum and post a Hijack This log that the experts can peruse. That Photoshop reported the photo was being used by another program would make me suspicious that something was going on that doesn’t involve Photoshop.

You might also want to clean out your startups in case there is a utility or program that is running. http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php

If you don't find anything and suspect it might be Photoshop, the Photoshop forums on the Adobe site sometimes has Adobe support people who could help. http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop

Hello all,

I didn't use my external hard drive for over a month, and today I decided that i wanted a back-up of some of the stuff on my laptop. I plugged it in and immediately a message popped up, saying that this drive was protected by something called BitLocker. It required me to enter a 48 digit recovery key. I had NEVER heard of BitLocker up until that point. I didn't know anything about a recovery key, and why didn't it ask for a regular password first, before asking for a recovery key? I didn't have a clue. I still don't have a clue. I searched my computer for BitLocker using the regular 8.1 system search. No results. I searched in PC Info. There is something about encryption there. That was, and is turned off. Not a mention of BitLocker anywhere. When i looked it up it said it comes with Windows 8.1 Pro or Enterprise edition. I am fairly certain I have regular 8.1. How in the name of all that is holy did I get saddled with this piece of shit encryption that locks me from my files, while I don't even want it? When I plugged it into my fathers laptop, also running 8.1 it gave the same message. When i plugged it into my brothers Asus tablet with keyboard combo, also running 8.1, it didn't give any problems. Does anyone here have any clue what is going on? Would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Thank you

A:BitLocker and External Hard Drive(WD My passport 2TB)

I'm having the exact same problem. I've been dealing with it for months. Both of my external hard drives had this happen to them at roughly the same time, and I have no idea how. I too had never heard of Bitlocker before this happened. I tried calling WD and they told me to call Microsoft as Bitlocker is owned by Microsoft. I called Microsoft and they told me to talk to WD. I've been led in circles for months and still cannot access my hard drives and the files on them. I do not have the recovery keys and do not know how to get them. I have been searching for answers throughout the internet without any results. I was told that I could reformat them, and that might work, but then I would lose all of my files. I don't have a backup for them because my hard drives were the backups (that's why I had two!). If you have been able to fix this problem, or have any sort of solutions or options, please, please help me out.

Hi, I installed a bitlocker on an external HDD via a Surface laptop with Windows 10 Pro. I have the Id key and recovery code of the bitlocker. However, I cannot access the HDD anymore after encryption was completed although my laptop does recognise that
the external HDD is plugged in. The following message appears: "The bitlocker encryption of this station is not compatible with your Windows version. Try opening the station with a newer Windows version".
This does not make sense because I have the updated Windows 10 Pro.
When i get to the security via the control panel, there is only teh option to unlock drive (which is clearly not working), but not the option to enter a password or to de-install bitlocker.
What can I do to retrieve the data on the external hard drive?
I appreciate your help but I am not very good at dealing with IT \

I guess either my USB 3.0 hub momentarily failed or my computer went to sleep during the process?
Anyway, I then paused decryption and opened up the error checking tool but it didn't complete (I don't think it even opened) but in the process, I agreed to turn off access to the drive during the "error check" that doesn't seem to have happened.

So recap: Not only can I not see the files on the drive, Windows can't even access the drive?

Btw, there's over 2TB worth of some pretty important data on this drive so can someone please help? I'd be willing to pay a reasonable amount for a software solution.

A:Bitlocker external drive seems to have stuck decrypting

Update: the drive seems to work after plugging it into my laptop's built-in USB port. It shows the decrypting screen and everything and after copying all the contents to a larger 4TB drive, they seem to be intact as far as I can tell.

Hi experts
My external USB disk was encrypted by bitlocker. It worked well until today. Now every time I try to decrypt the disk with no matter the password or key file, the USB disk lost connection.
My local IT said the it can be due to that some track of the disk is broken.
So in the case, is there any way I can get my data back.
Thanks very much. It is urgent. I am looking forward for your reply.

Hi
I was wondering if you can secure a wireless external disk drive (like the seagate wireless plus) with Bitlocker. When using Bitlocker the PC cannot access the drive in wireless mode (only when connected via USB). Any ideas?
Thanks.

Hello,

We would like to use Bitlocker to encrypt external devices. However, we do already have some external hard disks with built-in encryption. Is it possible to detect this, and not to re-encrypt those disks with Bitlocker ?

Thanks,

Soitjes.

There is no backdoor in Bitlocker....unless you can remember the password, your data is irretrievably lost. End of story, no if's or but's.

Hello! In our company we are using (amongst others) T460s and T560 laptops. Those laptops are Bitlocker encrypted. After switching on the laptop and when entering a Bitlocker PIN with the integrated keyboard everything is fine. But when using an external keyboard, we are facing a strange behaviour: When typing a Bitlocker PIN (or also the recovery key), it randomly occurs that several keystrokes are interpreted as DOUBLE keystrokes. This holds for typing the PIN or the recovery key, but also for deleting already entered PINs and keys by pressing the backspace button. I tested this issues with several different external USB keyboars and also WITH and WITHOUT the Lenovo docking station. I am not sure whether this is a Bitlocker or an hardware issue. Affected are ALL T460 and T560 computers in the company. For all other Lenovos everything is working fine. btw: an update to the newest BIOS version did not change the issue. Please let me know, thanks, Christian
