Lenovo G580 BIOS access blocked

Q: Lenovo G580 BIOS access blocked

Hello Everyone, Its a much discussed yet embarassing problem. I have a G580 with intel i3 processor. The machine is quite old (5 years i think) and has been subject to various OS upgrades, changes, flashes, dual boots systems like ubuntu & windows. Recently to upgrade the machine i bought an i7 processor (yes it is compatible, i checked the hardware manuals). Once installed the display wont come on, i figured i needed a BIOS update. Thats where the terrible stuff started. I tried using the BIOS update tool downloaded from the official lenovo website with windows 10. As soon as i launched it, the command prompt like window opened and my computer froze. That happned a few times. Figuring, it might resolve itself I left it alone for 3 hours but it was still frozen. Also figuring that the tool is for windows 7 i ran it on compatibility mode. Still the same result. I read on some forum a guy had the same issue and it was resolved by reverting to windows 7. So i bought a new copy of windows 7 (yes i really want that i7 processor). Installed it and tried to run the tool. Still, it froze the minute the window opened (another 3 hour gesticulation time was given to he machine to unfreeze itself but in vain). So i tried to access the bios to see if there was a supervisor password preventing me from entering. Thats when i discovered that i could nnot access the bios at all. Ive attached some screenshots in the end to explain. Startup: The screen i see when i power onF2: The screen i see when i press F2 at the startup screenF12 : The screen i see when i press the F12 on startupEscape : The screen i see when i press escape on startupNovo Menu : The screen i see when i power down and then hold the Novo buttonApp Menu : the second screen after pressing F12 on startup which on pressing enter takes me to the same screen as seen in the image Escape I also tried checking for any jumper or CMOS clear option but all experts on lenovo forums keep claiming that theres no way to do it and there are no jumpers for BIOS access. (I tried removing the CMOS batery too, Nada). I also tried other things like Fn+F2 etc. Nothing worked. I also tried removing all EFI partitions and booting without a hard disc. Still, nothing. The same screens over and over. So the possibilities that i can summarize are1. There is a jumper and i cant find it.2. Last time i sent the comput for repairs, the repair guy has played some trick on me blocking my access with an SVP. In which case i need to know how to get to this password prompt3. I'm really dumb and have missed something very obvious4. Its time to throw away the motherboard Someone help!F12Novo MenuStartupEscapeF2

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, The Problem:Recently I installed Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS  to my HDD in UEFI mode. Soon I found out that I could not access the BIOS using F2, but F12 allowed selection of boot device. Reinstalling Windows, I found out that the boot menu still had the Ubuntu entry and I still could not access the BIOS. I searched on the web for a solution and before I could manage to find a proper one, I managed to delete both the ubuntu and windows boot manager boot entries, still locked out of bios. This time I could not boot into any OS, could not access bios using f2 nor access boot menu using f12.  The Solution:There was one last hope, during boot I noticed that PXE (Boot via ethernet option was still showing).Note: This solution requires you to update the BIOS. This is a very risky procedure, so proceed with caution. This will also probably void your warranty. If you can access boot menu (F12) and want to regain access to the BIOS (F2), boot into Windows 7. Install a bios update for your laptop (specifically for your laptop) available at The Lenovo Support Site. The oldest BIOS (probably for Windows 7) is preffered. If you donot have access to windows 7, perform step 2 and boot into the created ISO by creating a bootable CD or pendrive. Then goto step 11.If you can't access F12 and F2, cannot boot into OS, but can boot via Ethernet (there should be a message about trying Atheros Ethernet PXE Boot during startup), start from step 1. Perform the following steps on a s... Read more

Update: Even in the newest BIOS Update 62cn97ww (for Lenovo G580), Ubuntu causes the same problem. I came across a solution on the internet, that works without having to update the BIOS if Ubuntu can be accessed. To fix it, boot into Ubuntu (should be installed on the system), start Terminal and type in the following commands:sudo grub-install
sudo efibootmgr -b 0 -BReboot and F2 should work. BIOS should be accessible through F12>Tab>Setup also. Ubuntu will boot no more but can probably be fixed.

My rule of thumb with BIOS updates is "if it is not broke, do not try to fix it" because there is always an inherent risk that a BIOS update can fail, and if so, leave  the system bricked (dead) requirnig a new motherboard, and there does not appear to be anything in the latest updates readme.txt other than specific fixes for Windows 8.1... So I would hold off. Summary of changes

Press the "Recovery Button" NOT THE POWER BUTTON (A small round button with curve arrow sign which is located on the left side of the Power Button just next to the dust removal opening on the left side of the laptop)3. Selected the BIOS Setup and nothing happens. I cannot even choose the boot option. If I put a pendrive with ubuntu, It picks it up, but not the Windows pendrive. My original HDD has bad sectors and cannot clone it. Any Ideas on how to help me?

Hi

I got a new Lenovo G580 laptop which did not come with any pre-installed OS. I installed Ubuntu in UEFI mode (I had not disabled UEFI/Secure Boot). Later I installed Windows 7. During installation it asked me to format the entire format as it did not recognize the GPT partition. Accordingly without thinking twice I erased the entire HDD and installed Windows 7. Now I am unable to enter into BIOS

Things I have tried:
Tried with F2, F1 and Delete keys while booting
Tried removing the battery and booting while pressing the above keys individually
Tried removing the battery and adapter, held the power button for 1 minute
Tried removing the battery and held the power button for 1 minute while the adapter was plugged in
Tried pressing F12 and going to the APP MENU but I can only see "Diagnostic Splash" Nothing else and in that diagnostic splash screen I see that the System BIOS is "shadowed"
How can i gain access to BIOS so I can disable UEFI and install Win 7 and Ubuntu side by side

hi adarsh_savant,

I think you may have concern in this thread,
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Essential/G580-Bios-update-problem/m-p/1199186/highlight...

Here the suggested solution from neokenchi that helped.

1. Boot into the BIOS by repeatedly tapping F2 on startup

2. In the BIOS, navigate to the Boot Tab and set UEFI to Disabled or Legacy then press F10 to save and exit. When
the computer reboots, check if you still get the errors and/or if you're able to boot into Windows.

3. If same problem, leave the changes that you made on Step 2 and attempt to re-install Windows via a Windows 8 recovery drive or OneKey Recovery button (note that this will wipe the computer to factory settings)

Hope this helps,
Cheers!

Hey there, I've got a problem with my new G580 2698.After installing Win7, I can't access BIOS. When I'm pressing F2, nothing happens - I even tried all those other fancy things like pressing/holding B and many other ways. I simply can't. There's no "Please wait" or anything. OneKey Rescue System boots system normally into Win7. Also there's no "setup" entry or anything other than Diagnostic Splash in the F12-boot menu's "Apps"-section. This is bad because it hinders me to boot anything in UEFI-mode. Everything else kinda works (got a running Win7 machine). Is there a way to reflash the BIOS? It's the 62CN42WW one. Maybe that will solve my problem? Also any other hints are welcome. Thank you and good dayAstfgl_

Hi. I've got Lenovo G580 (20150) and I'm trying to install the geforce graphics card present in the system. I don't know exactly what the gpu model is but it's something akin to Geforce 610M. I've got Windows 8.1 installed and the drivers from Lenovo support page for this laptop don't work (I tried drivers for Win 8.1/8/7). During installation the drivers installer says that it "couldn't find appropriate hardware". I also tried various drivers from sites like driveridentifier but none worked. I even installed Win 10 and Windows Update found but couldn't install the drivers. I also have  Win 8.1 freshly installed. It's definitely not an OS problem. I also don't have recovery dvds/partition... Here are the graphics identifiers:PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1140&SUBSYS_397717AA&REV_A1PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1140&SUBSYS_397717AAPCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1140&CC_030200PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1140&CC_0302

My g580 ran out of battery while using it, and now it gets stuck on the lenovo logo. I tried a different hard drive which changed nothing, I've tested both hard drives on a different computer and they both work. However when I boot the laptop with no harddrive it will get past the logo go to a screen saying something about an unplugged cable then reset and get stuck on a blank screen.   If I plug in my windows recovery usb drive( and no harddrive) the the machine will boot normally and go to the windows installation screen. So any ideas on why a working harddrive would stop the system from booting? Also I've tried the whole taking out the battery unplugging it holding down the power key and then plugging it back in thing, did nothing.

HI, Please skip to paragraph six for the actual issue I am having--the preceding paragraphs include info that may help to identify how to fix this. I am posting this using my HP desktop running Windows 7 as my Lenovo Ideapad 110 cannot connect to internet as explained below: Firstly, Sorry if I am breaking community guidelines in any way with this post. I did multiple searches but only came up with "forgot my BIOS password-how can I reset it" type posts. I am looking for urgent help to get back into the "BIOS" of my Lenovo IdeaPad 110 running preinstalled Windows 10. Everything was running fine until yesterday. This is when I made the mistake of thinking I knew more about the system than I actually seem to lol :/ So, yesterday--I entered the "BIOS" screen upon startup using F2 (function key+F2). I went on to disable wireless connection ability (to test something unrelated), and also switched Boot from strait UEFI boot mode to legacy/UEFI boot-with UEFI being the default boot option.  I don't know if any of the above have to do with the issue I am now having but I wanted to share it just in case. Here is the real issue as of now: Also yesterday at the same time while in "BIOS", I also went on to set an "admin password", the one you must type in before you can even get to the lenovo splash screen to enter "BIOS". Basically I believe this is referred to as a POST password although I am not an expert cleary (hence asking for the experts' he... Read more

hi starfire1801,

Welcome to the Forums.

During boot-up, if pressing Fn+F2 does allow you to access the BIOS, can you try to:
1. Remove the AC adapter and battery then press the power button for 20secs.
2. Reconnect the AC adapter and press the OneKey Recovery button. If a menu appears, choose BIOS Setup.
3. If you get the same problem, download a free copy of Windows 8 Enterprise (90day trial) and install it on the system. When you get Windows 8 up and running, try accessing theBIOs via the UEFI Firmware Settings.

Hope this helps

(In case: Windows). I press the sequence Fn + F2, Fn + F1, Fn + F12, Delete, Esc and nothing happens. Any suggestions for this problem? Some configuration is made so that the key combination option is available the next time for entry on Boot Selection or BIOS access? Thank's.

A:Need help in choosing SSD for my Lenovo G580 (2689)

Hi anantanandgupta,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community Forums.

There should be no problem with the warranty, the HDD is a customer replaceable unit that is easily accessed.  I would greatly suggest to exercise caution when doing so.  Also if there would be a need to have the system serviced you wil have to place the original hdd back in.

The laptop will support 6 Gb/s (Sata III). Please see specifications sheet from this link.

Hope I answered your question.

Hi,I have a lenovo G580 laptop with 1TB seagate HDD. Hard drive specs are provided below. The laptop is not working now. I am able to boot my laptop but it shows blank screen afterwards. even the one click recovery option provided in my laptop doesnt work. When i try the one click recovery, it shows copying files and then I see the blank screen again. I've waited more than a day with just the blank screen. I tried running the lenovo diagnostic tool and found that SMART quick test got failed. further I tried to search and recover bad sectors, It ran till 95% but process got very slow after that.. its still 95% even after 2 days, and I see more than 65k bad sectors. It looks like my harddrive has gone bad, when I removed the hdd and booted laptop using my windows 8 bootable flash drive, i got the windows install screen (when i did the same with HDD installed, it dint show the windows install screen.) Would it be fine if I bought a replacement HDD and install windows on it? I dont know where my windows 8 product key is and somewhere I found that its in BIOS and the new windows install should recognize it automatically.  Also would any HDD work for my laptop or only selective ones? I heard that G580 laptops comes with OEM hard drives,

Hi
I have a Lenovo g580 with windows 7 home premium 64 bit, whenever it goes to sleep, in whatever way, I get a black screen telling me that windows did not shutdown successfully.
I have completed a system restore to factory settings and downloaded and installed all updates. I have also run all Lenovo diagnostics to no avail.
I have changed the settings in power options, the bios has no power option.
I would appreciate any help
Many thanks

I recently (ie, <1 month ago) purchased a Lenovo G580 laptop.  Now, after very light use (sits on my desk, plugged in 90% of the time) the DC input has stopped working.  I originally noticed that a faint high-pitched beeping sound was emitting from my charger when I plugged it into my laptop and into the wall.  I initially thought that it was the charger, but tried a new one and it still did not work.  The laptop was working whilst the input was broken, but after the battery now died I cannot charge or power on the laptop, as there's no way to get power to it. What is my best option going forward?  I use this machine quite often for school, and I had a very hard time getting it delivered initially.  I have the basic 1 year warranty on it now. Should I just take it to a place near me for repairs?  <1 month of use seems to indicate a faulty piece of equipment, although certainly not DOA.  Can I get a refund?  Credit?  Repair?  I certainly don't want to wait a long time without a computer due to their mistake.  I think that a credit would be optimal, but I doubt that that's going to happen... I must say that I'm disappointed with their service and quality.  They've really slid downhill. Any help or advice is appreciated.

A:Lenovo G580 Faulty DC Input

hi clappboard,

Sorry to hear about your trouble but from the looks of it, you have two options:.

1. Send the unit to lenovo for warranty service (recommended)
2. Have a local computer repair store check the unit (most probably the problem is either the power connector / DC-IN cable (part #: 90200457) or the motherboard.

The reason why I recommended to send the unit directly to Lenovo is because the turn around time is quicker plus the service center have the necessary parts for the repair. Lenovo support phone list here.

Hope this helps.

Hello!      I am new in the community and would like some help related to my recently purchased g580 lenovo laptop. I have used my laptop on a daily basis for a few weeks and just yesterday when I turn on my laptop, it starts up on a "OneKey Recovery" menu I have never seen before. It gives me 2 options about system recovery: 1) Restore from initial backup or 2) Restore from users backup. I do not know how to use the second option so I chose the first one and continued to follow directions. Afterwards it starts to restore the system and I let it wait until it is finished. When it is done, I press finish and then I press done, and a prompt asks me if I want to shutdown or reboot. I chose shutdown and I turned the laptop back on, only to see the "OneKey Recovery" menu to show up AGAIN. This problem won't stop and this menu continues to show up whenever I start my laptop up! I need help, what can I do to fix this problem? And can someone please let me know why this menu came up in the first place as well? Thank you.

Hi Tbros,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your G580 Laptop is getting into OKR (One Key Recovery) menu whenever you turn ON, this may have occurred if the OKR button beside the power button is stuck. But try performing Flee Power and reset the BIOS to its defaults, below are the steps to perform the troubleshooting:

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.
Then keep tapping on the?F2? key before the Lenovo Logo appears to enter BIOS menu

Note: To check how the BIOS menu looks and to explore its options Click Here.

Then to reset the BIOS to its defaults click on ?F9? Key and select YES.
Now click on ?F10? Key to safe the changes that are done in BIOS, computer will automatically check if the issue is resolved.
If the issue persists even after performing the BIOS reset, I would Strongly Suggest Calling Technical Support for Assistance.

Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number, I?m sure they will be a great help.

Do post us back for further queries.

Best Regards

Shiva Kumar

Hi Puneet,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

We are really sorry to hear about the issue you are facing.

Firstly, Check BIOS? Sometimes a BIOS has fan speed controls.

This is normal as the game is running and full GPU is utilized, if the temp increases more than normal.  I suggest you to use the Laptop by placing it on a flat surface for good ventilation.

Please go through the below link to understand about Safe Temperature range for CPU?
