Brand new 13" Inspiron 5000 wifi capped at 150mbps (dual band 3165ac)

Q: Brand new 13" Inspiron 5000 wifi capped at 150mbps (dual band 3165ac)

Hi,
Just purchased a 13" Inspiron 5000, got it set up, things are going fine. Then I do a speed test on wifi. As background, I have 1gbps broadband with an Ubee cable modem/router that supports AC protocol. I have a 3 year old Lenovo laptop with an Intel DB 7260ac that pulls in 300-400mbps. I also have a 5 year old MacBook Pro with airport extreme b/G/n card that pulls in 250mbps. The new Inspiron only gets 150mbps.
I've been trying to figure out why. The 3165ac card in the Dell has a theoretical max of 433mbps. That's already disappointing, since gigabit broadband is now available. But working with that, I have the Ubee router set to N/AC only protocols, using 5Ghz, wmm on, 80Mhz bandwidth, SSID set. It seems like it should agree with the 3165ac card to negotiate the fastest speed, but it seems like I'm only getting half N speeds.
I have the latest Intel drivers, windows fully updated, removed all bloatware. All speed tests (ookla, Google fiber, Xfinity, etc) are consistent. Is this a limitation of the wifi card? Of note, I see the 3165ac is a 1x1 card. My Lenovo has a 2x2 card. I just makes no sense that my newest laptop has the slowest speed.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Brand new 13" Inspiron 5000 wifi capped at 150mbps (dual band 3165ac)

The 1x1 antenna design is the culprit. The AC7260 remains a great 2x2 card even today, and the AirPort Extreme card is probably 3x3 since it's 802.11n (it's rare to see 3x3 AC devices other than routers). Extra antennas allows multiple simultaneous data streams, which can significantly increase maximum real-world throughput. The fact that the 3165 is rated for "up to" 433 Mbps is pretty meaningless in the real world, just like every other WiFi speed quoted in marketing materials. The AC7260 is rated for 867 Mbps, for example, and clearly you're not getting that level of performance out of it either, although in fairness, the only WiFi ROUTERS that can push that kind of bandwidth in the real world to begin with are very recent 4x4 802.11ac routers (like my ASUS RT-AC88U), and then only when acting as a media bridge to another 4x4 802.11ac router. There aren't any 4x4 AC clients to handle that, so making the most of gigabit Internet still requires a wired connection for now.Anyhow, if you're comfortable opening up your system, you can see whether there's an extra antenna already in the chassis (its connector would probably have a plastic sleeve around it since that card can't use it), in which case you could buy something like an Intel 8265 for ~$30 (in the US) from Amazon/eBay, which is their latest and greatest 2x2 AC card. If you only have a single antenna in the chassis, then you may be stuck. You MIGHT be able to buy another antenna (very cheap) and route it to whichever side of the display doesn't already have one, but that would involve opening the display assembly itself, which is not a supported type of service and therefore no instructions for doing so are included in the system's service manual. There's also an excellent chance that would void your warranty.Newer is not always better, unfortunately. :(

Hi all,

I looked online and I'm still a bit confused whether I should get dual or single band wifi for a laptop that I would like to purchase. Can someone explain to offer a suggestion as to which one is best?

Thank you in advance.

A:dual band wifi card vs single band wifi card

I should get dual or single band wifi for a laptop that I would like to purchaseClick to expand...

do you mean a router
or as part of the laptop spec ?

what router do you have and does it work in dual band simultaneously

the advantage of the 5ghz signal is if you are in a crowded 2.4ghz environment then 5ghz helps avoid interference - also the coverage is wider - although the 5ghz router i have linksys - does not seem to be

if your current router only works in 2.4ghz , then no advantage in the short term

some routers are advertised as dual band - but you have to choose between 2.4 or 5 ghz and so ALL devices will need to support 5ghz

I emailed tech support and got zero response on this. I opened the new lap top I ordered (Inspiron 5000) turned it on.  The screen flickered several times, and then finally went bright/normal - for about 5 minutes.  After that it went at least 98% dim, almost black.  You can only VERY FAINTLY see the desk top on the screen.  I restarted at least 5 times with no luck.  It is still consistently a dark screen.  It is so dark that I cant even see the mouse to do anything or click anywhere.  I had to force restart to get it to restart.
Do I just have to suffer through the hassle of returning this???? Or can something be done on my end to remedy this???

A:BRAND NEW - JUST OPENED Dell Inspiron 5000 screen is VERY DIM, almost black

It should not be that way out of the box - contact Dell to have it exchanged.

I'm having problems with my pavilion 17-G192DX.  when I have the wifi on, it works for about 10 minutes, then basically shuts down my home network - TV locks up, no other computers can access the internet.  As soon as I turn the wifi off, everything goes back to normal.  HP troubleshooting can find nothing...when the thing is working, that is.  I'd like to upgradethe wifi card with a dual band unit?  I'm thinking the Intel 7260 2x2.  Will that work in this computer?  Any other options?  P/N is V0Q01UA.

A:can I put a dual band wifi card in my pavilion 17-G192DX not...

Yes you can install any wireless card of the right form factor which for your laptop is an M.2 adapter. See the Manual here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04655191 The 7260ac is a mini-pcie card and is not compatible but you could MAYBE install an Intel 8260ac card: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-8260AC-8260NGW-Bluetooth-Wireless/dp/B01ERMBDCK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&q... Start on p. 31 with removal of the back cover and read through p. 39. The hesitation is that, to install a dual band card you must have 2 antennae and on some HP models with lower-end wireless cards there is only one. So if you want to do this I recommend open it first and count antennae. If two, you can install the card linked above, which will perform as well as any wireless card you can buy.  Let us know if there are other questions.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as SOlution" to help others find it.

Did some research on how to tell whether or not a laptop's gpu can be replaced, and still curious whether or not the inspiron 15 5000s that include the "discrete" (as in separate from the motherboard) R7 m445 would be able to have it's video card replaced. The manual for the laptop is the same across the cheaper models, which rely entirely on the integrated gpu,  and more expensive models that don't, and it doesn't include any information on it's gpu(s).
I researched more information on the Radeon m445 to find no existing non-integrated version of the gpu which would mean it couldn't possibly be discrete unless it is custom to that laptop or something but the specs on the dell page for the laptop say that the Radeon card is discrete: www.dell.com/.../hmc-video-card-inspiron-lt
So could the laptop have two on-board/integrated gpus with a motherboard that supports it, a discrete gpu that is replaceable but never mentioned to be, or is the discrete gpu nefariously soldered to a pci-e (or whichever) slot in the computer in order to make sure it is impossible to upgrade?
I will open it up sometime and update this post if no one can give a definite answer.

Hi,
I purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series laptop (5558) in October 2015 from the Dell store in Amazon. It was shipped with Windows 10 pre-installed (I didn't have to upgrade). The laptop is generally functioning very well and I don't see any hardware issues.
The one issue I'm facing since the time I bought my laptop is that the WiFi disconnects automatically (after a while). There's no specific time period at which this happens, but it happens nonetheless if I leave it alone for a significant period of time (anywhere b/w 30 minutes to a few hours). I mostly leave the laptop on (throughout the day). Each time the only option I'm left with is to restart the laptop which fixes the issue.
Another thing that I observed whenever this issue happens is that all options regarding WiFi don't work. For eg: I tried disabling and enabling the WiFi driver. I clicked on the disable option multiple time and it doesn't do anything. However, when I restart the system, the driver is disabled and I have to manually enable it for WiFi to connect.
Other Devices: I used to have a Dell XPS 13 before and it used to work fine and my office laptop is a Dell Latitude and it doesn't have this issue either. I also connect my phone (Samsung S5) and tablet (Nexus 9) to the same network and no issues.
Details:

When my Carbon 5th is connected to 5 GHz Wifi it randomly resets (drops) after several hours (connection is being lost, Windows reports "Cannot connect to the network"). Sometimes it is possible to connect again manually, sometimes only reboot makes it work again. Connection to 2.4 GHz Wifi always works totally fine. I've seen several similar topics on Intel forums with the same issue, looks like it touches several Intel WiFi adapters. No solution have been found except using only old 2.4 GHz protocols or external WiFi adaptors. I tried different drivers and many parameter sets on my router - nothing solves this issue. It is very sad to have only 20mbps with 2.4 GHz while new standards offer more than 100mbps. Did you face this issue? Any ideas to solve it out?

OK, this is my first time being a part of or using a tech related forum so here it goes:

I'm trying to help save a neighbor some money by fixing their wireless network.

WNDR3700 Dual band Netgear router.

2.4ghz wireless b/g/n with enabled SSID broadcast, channel=auto, mode set to 130Mbps
WPA-TKIP + WPA2-AES. wireless isolation is not enabled.

5Ghz wireless a/n enabled SSID broadcast, channel = 44, Mode is up to 300Mbps
No security encription. (i know...bad, but the lady has lots of kids and family members coming
and going from the house so she doesn't want one encripted). Video network enabled

Both Radio frequencies are enabled, fragment and CTS/RTS set to max

WPS settings = keep existing.

IPv6 not enabled, No repeating is enabled, No guest networks are enabled(however ssid broadcast is enabled for guest profile 1)
The problem, and reason for fixing the problem is that the 2.4 Ghz band light on the router is ON however the SSID is not being seen by any client in the house. the netgear interface says it is on and working. the neighbor needs the 2.4ghz band to work because the printer is wireless and will only recognize 2.4Ghz SSIDs. Also they have older nintendo DS clients they would like to use on the network.

During the day the 5 Ghz band works with very seldom (1-2) disconnects while the 2.4 Ghz band wont be visible to any device. in the evening both bands will come online, and very often will every computer get disconnected from either, the 5Ghz band wi... Read more

Hi there!

So about 2 months ago, I purchased the AC53 when I moved in to a house share.
We have Virgin Media SuperHub that does both 2.4ghz and 5ghz.
When I installed it, it worked fine and connected excellently to the 5G band, a few days ago however the 5G connection disappeared off my list and now it always connects me to the 2.4ghz band.

Tried resetting my SuperHub and re-installing the drivers and software utility for the AC53 but alas it doesn't show. My phone however can find and connect to the 5G band.

I'm a bit confused as where to go from here!

Any help would be much appreciated!

After re-installing you can't connect at all or just only connect to 2.4?

Can you run ipconfig /all and post back the results.
Click Start, in the search box type cmd, under programs right click on cmd and select "Run as Administrator".
In the command prompt window type ipconfig /all and press enter.
Next right click within the command prompt and select "Select All" press enter.
Paste the results back in this thread.

Hello everyone,
yesterday evening I turned on my new inspiron 15 5000 and started configurating it. I inserted my old hotmail address when asked for a Microsoft account; later on I was asked an email account in order for windows to send me information about antivirus and other stuff. I changed the Microsoft address with a Gmail one which I normally use.
Suddenly a message popped up, saying an error occurred and the laptop would restart soon. It did and showed the famous message "just a minute" with a blue background. I thought the laptop needed time to charge all the applied changes, but that was 12 hours ago and it still shows the message. Should I leave it operating or switch off the laptop? And most importantly, is my laptop showing a serious problem?
I hope this is the right part of the forum and this is not a silly question - but i couldn't find any solution for this.
Thank you for your help.

Giulia

The only time Microsoft asked me for an e-mail address was to verify the computer.  It would show part of your address and ask you to enter it correctly to receive a code.  If that is what was happening, it should have asked for a different the correct address but I have not experienced such a situation.
A window will also pop up from Dell asking you to register software like McAfee and automatic downloads.
Is your system connected to the internet?  It should not take long for the system to finish what it needs to do unless it is waiting for something.  If your system is on the internet, you might try taking it off to see if it will continue.  After you feel you have waited a sufficient time, of course.

My internet is 150Mbps/150Mbps  speeds, but this latpop is only giving me 90Mbps.  I tried every possible change to the router's settings to maximize wifi speeds but no luck, still getting only 90.  This is the same case with other routers.  what can I do to increase the wifi speed to 150? Do I have to upgrade the wlan card? btw, I know that the max ethernet speed for this wlan card is 100Mbps but it is my understanding that the wlan card currently in the laptop  should be able to do wifi speeds of 150Mbps. correct me if im wrong. Thanks.

N600 Wireless Dual Band Router WNDR3400.

I am trying to get a signal out in my garage at the opposite end of my router location. I am getting 1 bar and "poor" signal. I downloaded inSSIDer to analyse my signal and I notice that my "Wireless Network (5GHz a/n)" is not broadcasting anything. The checkbox for "Enable SSID Broadcast" is checked.

I have very limited knowledge of this stuff but it seems to me that if it is a dual band that I should be seeing 2 different signals, right?

All I see is this: Wireless Network (2.4GHz b/g/n)

I have attached screenshot of my settings

Can someone help me out with this? Thanks, Joe

My Billion BiPAC 7800VDOX Dual Band Wireless VoIP ADSL2+ Router has two bands:  2.4GHz and 5GHz.  and is wirelessly connected to my laptop OMEN by HP Laptop PC  17-w007tx.  It always shows as connected via 5GHz band only.  My laptop also shows 5GHz band only in the list of available networks;  2.4GH does not show up in the list of available networks.  It is not so in my other laptop which is also connected to the same router and that laptop shows both the bands in the list of available networks.  Thus, I can choose to connect to any of the two bands as per my choice. I have tested the router and it is working perfectly; there is nothing wrong with it.I wonder what can possibly be wrong in my OMEN laptop that it does not show both the bands which it should. At times, when I click to open the list of available networks, 2.4GHz may appear momentarily only and then disappears; thus I can not choose it for connection. I would appreciate any help to resolve this issue so that my OMEN laptop shows both the bands in the list of available networks so as to choose either one for connection.
