processor not running at peak performace

Q: processor not running at peak performace

HI , i have a intel duo that has a new hard drive and a new install of xp pro . all updated ( sp3 ) and all drivers updated .
scanned for virusues . spyware etc . and the computer is so slow it take s 10 minutes before you can open IE to browse the web .

i checked and the cpu it a T5500 Intel DUO with 1 GB memory , and the processor is running at 982Mhz .
I remember when i worked on another compaq / HP pc , it was the energy scheme that that was holding it back , well now its set to ALL time on = max preformance and still no change , i have already tried other energy schemes as well .
any ideas here to why this would be running so slow as it is , takeing ages to accomplish anything on this pc ?
Cheers in advance ,

Compaq NX 7400 intel DUO T 5500 , 1GB .

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My PC seems to be running considerably slower, I have this multi media gadget

I followed the 5 steps from your forum. I would really appreciate your help..

I was wondering if there was any program that anyone recommended to boost PC performance such as SpeedUpMyPc. I currently run CCleaner, defrag regularly, and for the most part, take off unused files/programs. That aside:
-The boosting software doesn't have to free.
-I don't want it to bog down my computer
-What do the professionals use?

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:? Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable. The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.? Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.? After 2 months, checked mulitiple reviews and feedbacks, I bought the X1 yoga to replace my X230 (yeah?) Apperance-wise , I can't complain, really, this is exactly what I'm looking for. battery life ain't bad, with comfortable setting, I have roughly 9 hrs (OMG!) With/without external power, I ran the FFXIV benchmark, the score isn't bad as well. So why I start this post? because the SSD, somehow , I can feel the system is lagging because some whatever reason, and I use my laptop to do still image raw editing ... from the point import the files to the laptop, I can see the transfer rate is only about 60MB/s (at home my primary system, can do minimum 130~140MB/s, with same card reader attach to USB3.0) So what happened ? such great laptop came with a crappy SSD ? looked up online, this SSD with write speed up to 140MB/s ? WTH ? I thought 100~140MB/s are the speed for those aged 7.2k rpm traditional HDD ? Well, should I be glad I only order the 128GB module, because the built your own charge $300~400 for 500GB SSD upgrade, and I just bought one from Crucial , the MX200 500GB M.2 2280 cost $150 ? (and with 3 years warranty) I can't blame the whole laptop, but Lenovo should pick a better parts , especially storage is quite important as part of this laptop, isn't it ? thanks

please help.. someone...

A:optimizing performace

I assume you are talking about services, rather than startup programs. They are shown in a different tab of msconfig.

There are some so-called guides on what services can be safely turned off, but they can be unreliable.

I just looked at my services directly (not from msconfig).

I have 10 disabled, 46 set to automatic, and 96 on manual.

9 of the manuals are running right now. 41 of the automatics are running right now.

I don't have any performance issues and have good response and boot in under a minute.

Are you running a low powered processor that might not be too fast under the best of circumstances?

I want to upgrade my ram on my gaming computer from 2 GB to 4 GB. I've read that 4 GB will be a 'must' in the future, so I decided to upgrade.
Currently, I have two 1gb sticks of ram installed. So I was wondering if buying another two 1gb sticks is the right way to go, or should I buy two 2gb sticks and trash the ones I already have? (I really don't want to do the latter). This is the motherboard I have, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121035
Will having four 1gb sticks be a lot worse than having two 2gb sticks on my motherboard?

i've been playing baldur's gate and i'm getting erratic performance during gameplay. was on the phone with game tech support and they say there is something wrong with my system's resources. here are the symptoms:

erratic game speed - sometimes very fast but mostly too slow. i have a 32 meg 3D vid card, 550 MHz PIII, 128 Meg RAM, 40 Speed CD-ROM. according to game support there should be no slow down at all while running the game on my machine.

i run nothing in background, have a defragged disk, have the latest drivers, and have no probs with Direct X. i have noticed lots of hard drive access during gameplay. there also appears to be a large amount of HDD access in the Win 98 environment.

also, there were some sound files from the game that were located in some bad clusters. i used norton disk doctor to move the files to good clusters. moving those files to good clusters did not help.

Choppy Play from the CD-ROM and Skipping Sound - when the game accesses the CD-ROM to play a movie i mostly get choppy vid and the sound skips alot when the game first accesses the disk. but sometimes it is fast and there are no skips.

the game teases me when it runs fast. it is so much more enjoyable to play. but mostly it runs slow and it is becoming frustrating. my guess is that i'm having a HDD problem or sound card problem, any thoughts are appreciated.

A:Erratic Performace

forgot to include that my HDD is moderately old (6 gig) and my sound card is a 16-bit soundblaster AWE64 (which i have the most recent drivers for). also, sometimes my HDD makes a wierd click sound followed by some fast and furious accessing.

I recently installed the CoreTemp plugin for my ALL CPU Meter, and have been tracking my core temperatures.
Here's what I'm getting:

When I start up my computer after sleeping for 6+ hours, my core temps are resting at a comfortable (core1/core2) 75*F/82*F
However, after running for 30 minutes, it runs at a continuous average of approximately 111-121*F/128-138*F

I was happy because before getting my chill mat, it was running about 30 degrees hotter... However, my buddy is stating that my processor is running hot, as his only runs about 75*F (avg'd across his 12 cores) on average, while he's working it.

I know the max temps for my cores are 195*F/202*F so I'm well in the safe zone, but I'm curious if this is a normal temperature or not?

Hello all,

I've done lots of research, talked to lots of people, and I just can't decide what to believe. So... I'll give you the details, and you can offer your opinion on the situation. I greatly appreciate *anyone's* response.

I just built a new pc... my first custom one. I have an Intel P4 3.0GHz model 530J processor on an MSI 865PE Neo3-F mobo with 1GB of Kingston RAM (2 512MB modules). I've had the computer for a couple of months now. A few weeks ago, I noticed the idling and load temperatures of the processor seemed high. Here is what they are right this second (idling pretty much...):

CPU Temp: 53C (127.4F)
Sys Temp: 37C (98.6F)

I have two intake fans (one blowing over two of my harddrives), 3 exhaust fans (two in back, one on side panel), and the power supply fans (one on the outside and one on the inside... not sure which way they're blowing). My two Maxtor drives are running around 23C (73.4F) and 31C (87.8F).

Does anyone need anymore information to come up with an opinion on the matter? Do you all think the temperatures are normal? Too high? What?

When I fully load it, the CPU temp jumps up to 66C (150.8F) and even goes higher, but I usually stop whatever's going on at that point so I don't kill it. Or will it not damage it? Argh... all these questions... and I just don't know.

The processor, according to Intel, is specified to not go over 67.7C (153.86), which it definitely has at least once. Is that Intel just... Read more

A:Processor running too hot?

Hello this is my first post here so please forgive me if I've done something wrong or messed up the ettiquete.

Windows 10
Procesor is a AMD FX 6200 Six Core which according to AMD should not be running much hotter than 70 degrees max. It is a few years old.
Shuts down when processor gets too hot (black screen no error message or any mention of it when rebooting).

Basically when my PC is running games after a while the processor tempterature will hit 80 degrees and my PC will force shut down. This problem existed before but I went into the BIOS to find that the processor had been overclocked by the manufacturer. I disabled this and the PC operated fine for a few months but the issue has recently come back. I have monitored the computer and it is definitely/almost certainly not a problem with:
- The graphics card
- The fans
- The power supply/ voltages
- The software running
- The thermal paste (probably) (I replaced this and it didn't make much difference but maybe I did a bad job -with it?)

I did not build the PC myself and am not an expert when it comes to this stuff. If possible please answer in as simple english as possible. If the solution is risky/ difficult then I'm willing to take it to a professional but I'd much rather save the money.

Dear friend,my Lap Hp 15 be002tu, I  was intalled windows 7 32bit,  last few days my lap was performing slow. Kindly reply me.

A:Hp 15 be002tu slow performace

Dear Customer,  There?s a variety of steps you can take to improve performance on your computer and make it run faster. First off, I would recommend checking your hard drive space ? you should have at least 15% free space available, preferably more for best performance. If you have a lot of large media files (movies, photos, music) stored on your hard drive, moving those to an external hard drive can help speed things up. Also empty your recycle bin to free up space. Here are some other tips: Update software and drivers using HP Support Assistant and Windows UpdateUpdate the BIOSDefragment the hard drive (do NOT defrag if your computer has a solid state drive [SSD], because this can damage it)Run a virus scan and remove viruses/spywareClose any apps you aren?t actively using, and try not to leave a lot of things open at onceUse Task Manager to identify what is using the most system resourcesClean the computer fans and vents to reduce heatUpgrade memoryThese solutions are explained in detail, along with other helpful suggestions, in the following documents: Computer Is Slow (Windows 10)Computer Is Slow (Windows 8)Computer Is Slow (Windows 7)  Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again  **Click the White Thumbs Up Button on the right to say Thanks**Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,GBL... I've had this computer for a few years and in my mind - it has always underperformed. On average, I've been looking at 40fps on medium settings in world of warcraft.

Sometimes when I switch it on, the computer boots up, hdd's spin up and fans and lights turn on but the screen remains black and on standby as if nothings plugged in. To check the screen wasnt a problem I switched monitors with a friend, my screen worked fine for him but I still had the same problem with his screen when it was plugged into my pc. Might only happen about 5 times a week.

It's not like I'm running out of ram or using too much cpu power, as task manager shows 3gb used while in game and I've never seen the the cpu max out.

I thought it might have been the power supply so switched that out for a new one about a year ago. I was using a 750w tagan power supply and also did a clean install, windows 7, games, I'd formatted the whole lot. Once all this was done, the problem stayed the same.

The specs are:
i7 920 @ 4ghz
6gb corsair dominator gt RAM - triple channel
ati 5850 gfx
windows 7 64 bit.
700w corsair power supply.

My internet shouldn't be the problem either as in wow I'm always at 30ms. I have 90mb/s down and 7mb/s up. Confirmed with multiple speed tests.

No temperature on the system exceeds 70 degrees celcius even under full load for 2 hours (water cooling).

There doesn't appear to be any swollen capacitors anywhere.

A:Performace / display issue

Try running a memory diagnostic.

I've had this same problem when trying to run a game- The opening splash screen will freeze and I will have to hit the reset button. Then the computer will do a soft boot (no beep, fans/hdd running but black screen) and I will have to literally flip the switch on the PSU to get back to normal. I don't play the game anymore...

I've had sporadic memory issues with my system since I built it- I'm convinced one of the DDR sticks is faulty, but the system runs fine as long as I don't push it (I do DVD encoding and occasionally video-editing, only occasional crashes) so I haven't bother to change anything.

I seem to be having a problem with having Hyper V installed on my machine. Only installed. Not running any VMs or anything. I don't know why but when I have it installed it causes severe screen tearing with web based video players when playing videos in full screen or a bigger size than the embedded video player. I have also noticed some serious performance hits while gaming as well.
Is there a fix for this other than having to install and un-install hyper V from windows programs and features every time I want to or have finished using it? I tried looking on google, but I seem to be the only person that's experiencing this or is even talking about it.

A:Performace hit with Hyper V installed

For some reason, when I enable Hyper V, I find that the system bus speed has decreased from 100MHz to ~97MHz. This is annoying, and surely MS should find a solution for this issue, not least because system bus speed can affect all other peripherals in the system.

My attached files for BSOD

A:BSOD Performace Report

Taking a look at your dumps, at first glance, it appears your issue maybe nVidia driver related. We have a few dumps here that are faulting the process nvtray (nvidia tray), and nvlddmkm.sys as the driver fault which is the nVidia video driver.

I'm going to recommend first off uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of your video card drivers. If you're on the latest already, I'd recommend uninstalling and reinstalling a version prior to the latest to ensure the latest is not the issue.

If after doing this, you're still BSOD'ing, enable Driver Verifier and report back with the dumps it generates -

Driver Verifier:

What is Driver Verifier?

Driver Verifier is included in Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 to promote stability and reliability; you can use this tool to troubleshoot driver issues. Windows kernel-mode components can cause system corruption or system failures as a result of an improperly written driver, such as an earlier version of a Windows Driver Model (WDM) driver.

Essentially, if there's a 3rd party driver believed to be at issue, enabling Driver Verifier will help flush out the rogue driver by flagging it and causing your system to BSOD.

Before enabling Driver Verifier, it is recommended to create a System Restore Point:

Vista - START | type rstrui - create a restore point

Windows 7 - START | type c... Read more

Hi forum

I have a problem on my computer which is a cpu usage of 50% that slows down everything.

I tryed to check the task manager after I have shut down all the programes, the system idle pocess is using 99%, so what ever process is going on, it's not appearing in the task manager.

Now I have noticed something which is that the cpu jumps to 50% just after I disconnect the internet connection (while I'm working on the internet there is no problem but the problem starts just after I disconnect the interent).

I have run norton anti-virus and MS-spy doctor and nothing was found.

here is the HJT log, I'll appreciate it if someone looked at it.

Many thnx in advance.

If you are trying to install in safe mode you are out of luck (without some hacking) windows installer will not run in safe mode.

Ok so I've read tons about not to fill up SSD's because it needs space atleast 10-20% free so it can shuffle around things and keep things speedy..

Well, what exactly happens when you do only have that 1GB or 200MB left on your SSD??

I think I have filled it to the max (a 250GB SSD) and then I deleted stuff because I got scared about that provisioning thing..etc..

My SSD's do not have over-provisioning.. i never did that..

So is that SSD that I filled up to the brim broken and will never achieve lightspeed again or what? I don't seem to notice any difference in it..

I'd just thought I'd pop in and ask about a problem I am having with my Processor.

I have an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ Processor, yet DxDiag is saying it is only running at 1.5GHz. I have opened up my Bios and it is not letting me change the processor performance, why is it running 0.2GHz slower than it should and how can I fix it.

I don't have an incredibly high-spec computer, in fact mine is outdated by about 5 years, it's just that there are some games that I could play with a 1.7GHz processor, but because I am running at 1.5GHz they are incredib;y slow and skip loads.

Ok, so i have PC wizrad running because i am trying to play GTA IV And it is running very slow.

I have an AMD Athlon x2 QL 64

Its original frequency is 2100mhz and it is running at 1094mhz, when i look at it, sometimes it suddenly jumps up to 2100mhz but then goes back to 1094, i'm pissed because i was excited about playing my game and its sucking...

I'm running vista right now too..

And i do not have that AMD program that underclocks your cpu so dont ask XD

A:AMD processor running slow?

its your power management scheme, its a power saving program that throttles up the cpu as demand dictates.....i dont like it either LOL. go into your power management and change it to performance and that will stop.

A:I think my processor maybe running hot Windows 7

Those do seem a little high. I would suggest you checking your CPU cooler and make sure it is properly attached and the fans are turning and are not clogged with dust. If necessary, I would remove the cooler, remove all thermal paste and apply new good quality paste. Those temps should be lower in a case with good airflow and I would not run the CPU real hard until you get to the bottom of it. If you decide to reapply the thermal paste, I use high purity alcolol and a coffee filter. If you need help applying new paste, maybe this will help.

My Desktop has 1GB ram and 2.19ghz processor. I have nothing on startup, i have no programs running, and i just recently reinstalled xp home edition. It runs super slow and when i go into task manager it says the CPU is running at 100% while the page file usage is at 512. I do not know what to do to make it faster. Im pretty sure it is not supposed to be that high all the time. I have plenty of disk space left. I have 40GB drive with 18 free.

My system is a Gateway 300s. I ran comodo registry cleaner it found over 600 problems and it fixed them, and it did not do anything. Could it be a problem with the CPU itself because it is 7 years old. Is it just losing its effectiveness?

Please help. Thanks in advance.

This is my 1st time in a forum and I'm looking forward to some help!!!
I have an HP Compaq Presario SR1610NX
Sempron 1.8GHz
1G memory
Very basic setup.

I am trying to install a fresh copy of Windows XP Home. I have a Windows XP Service Pack 3 CD and can successfully format and install the operating system.
From the second the operating system starts up after installation, the processor immediately begins to run between 95-100%. I haven't even installed any drivers yet.
I've tried running in Safe Mode and the processor is still running between 95-100%.

What can cause this.
I've heard there are issues with Service Pack 3 and AMD processors but shouldn't the service pack be disabled in Safe mode?

Isn't there a site or something to get a prog that lets you see how fast the processor is running?

A:Where do I go to see how fast the processor is running?

Usually, the first BIOS (black and white page) you see at bootup will show the processor's speed, or what it is SET to- I have had machines to work on that were set way off, for one reason or another, even some set for way slower CPU's...anyway, look on that screen for speed of CPU in mhz (like, Intel Pentium [email protected] 433mhz...
As you suspect, there are diagnostic sites that are very helpful and test all kinds of things... one good one here: www.pcpitstop.com You register and test, it has virus testing too, but does not clean them. You have to be running Internet Explorer browser to use it, not just your connection.
Hope that helps.

Windows 7 original beta (7000), should i bear through the paint and upgrade to the RC version that was just released?

A:processor running at 1/3 speed WTF

If you look a little closer you will see that the FSB speed is the same but your multiplier has dropped to x4 in Windows 7, which is most likely to to save power and prolong the life of your components, if you start doing something that is more intensive and requires more power you should see the multiplier rise to the default again.

Hi guys,

I did read all of the pinned threads here, just to note. I have an issue with my processor/hard drive running painfully long when the machine is booted up, and when the first programs (2 or 3) are opened. For instance, it will take 5 minutes or so for the boot to finish AND the processor finish "continuously" running. (e.g. - opening ff and a chrome tab will take 1-2 minutes to stop processing).

After this time, only randomly will the processor start spinning for minutes on end before it quits. It doesn't at all seem to correlate with one specific task I'm doing or program that I open when it happens.

I have run spybot, avg, and malwarebytes all through my machine and none of them come up with any infections or watch conditions in the log files they output. So I'm out of answers. Here are my computer specs:

*IBM Laptop (refurbished)
*1.5 ghz processor
*512MB RAM

Could this stuff really be related to my very small RAM amount, and the fact that I'm overloading the processor at times? I know my specs stink, but this machine was very cheap. But still, even with the above specs, 10 seconds to desktop when clicking the "show desktop" icon seems a bit strange. That's the kind of stuff I'm running into...

Any help appreciated. thanks guys!

There are several problems going on with my computer right now, but the most important one to take care of is just getting it so that I can make backups of my files. Then I plan to format the hard drive and just start over. I would be happy to run the programs you request, but that's not currently possible.

So, here's the story. On Saturday, January 29th, I was searching for some sort of quote to use in a card I was trying to make. I didn't notice, until it was too late of course, that the link I clicked on didn't have any type of mcafee notation next to it. I got the notice that it was a known attack site after clicking on it and immediately closed the tab, but it was too late. I had picked up a virus of some sort. A program called winscan.exe popped up and said I needed to defrag my systems. I didn't trust the program so I ust closed it. I ran krill and restored the host files back to their original settings as I had found, and used before, from your website to remove security scan. I ran MBAM (full scan), McAfee (full scan) and PC Health Advisor. They removed several things and winscan.exe didn't come back up, but then other problems started happening. McAfee would continuously shut off realtime scanning. I got into the registry and deleted anything that looked odd. I don't know if it did any good or harm. It didn't seem to do anything at all.

At the recommendation from another help site (sorry) I downloaded and ran Superantispyware, whi... Read more

Hi, sorry if this one gets asked a lot, but I couldn't find a thread that seemed to apply particularly to my dilemma.

I'm running on an eMachines built computer, the model is T2865. Aside from a GeForce video card, I've left the computer as is. The processor should be an AMD Athlon XP 2800+, not exactly sure. If I recall correctly, the processor is supposed to run at 2 ghz or more, yet when I go into Control Panel ---> System, the menu says it is running at 1.25 ghz. I already went through with several spyware removers and cleaned the computer, as well as ensured any necessary drivers are up to date, etc., yet the computer still says it runs at 1.25 ghz. Am I overlooking something?

A:AMD Processor running under speed?

Do you have AMDs Cool n Quiet software installed?

This program underclocks your CPU when it is not in use so that your temps stay low (and less fan noise is produced).

When you need your CPU again, it automatically boosts up to full speed.

That's what it sounds like to me.

Hey there

I have an Intel Celeron 600Mhz Processor that I wish to run without a fan, due to the high level of noise emitted by the CPU fan. I believe the sleeve bearings of the fan are damaged.

Is running such a processor without a fan, such a safe idea? On my case I have two intake fans at the front, one fan on the side of the case and an exhaust fan at the rear, so air circulation within the case is no problem.

What do you guys think?
