Localhost Blocked, Browsers Not Working, Ping not working

Q: Localhost Blocked, Browsers Not Working, Ping not working

I can't ping.  I can't browse (in any browser).  Firewall is running.  Wifi is connected.  Local Area Network connected. (WAN and LAN can both connect either one at a time or both at the same time)

I've already run these commands:

netsh int ip reset reset.log
netsh winsock reset catalog

**** End of log ****

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 and Malware Anti-Rootikit scans found nothing.  I am unable to update either program because I am unable to connect to the wifi (which is the problem I am trying to solve).

I was unable to copy the log of the anti-rootkit scan.  But here are the logs of the scans I ran with Anti-Malware:

I did 2 scans.  The first scan found viruses.  The second one afterwards was clean.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This seems to be the only topic that deals with Localhost blocked. The previous poster had the same problem that I have now. I have internet connectivity: I can ping and run tracert anywhere but can't use my browser or get updates. I ran Farbar scanner and got these results:
My firewall is also not running but I am concerned about getting back online first. I will address the firewall in another thread. First I want to see if there are any threads already started.

I ran these commands before running the scan:

netsh int ip reset reset.log

netsh winsock reset catalog

Hi,

I have a system which is no longer able to browse the Internet with any of the browsers. Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1 with IE, Firefox and Chrome all failing to display web sites however I am able to get responses by pinging sites or even using command line FTP to connect to a site and transfer files. I am unable to download updates for malwarebytes or other programs over the Internet on this system and have tried copying scanners over via USB drive to clean the system out with no success.

Any assistance on resolving this would be very much appreciated.

Hello,

I've got a Dell laptop here that isn't functioning properly. I can't get this to work for the life of me! I am currently using this laptop with a different hard drive, it's the install on the SSD that doesn't work. I know that the quick fix would be to simply reload windows, but I don't want the quick fix.

Basically, laptop works with Windows 7 install on a hard drive, no issues. On the SSD, where the ONLY applications loaded are Office 2013 and Firefox (and all the latest updates), the internet does not work (I can ping yahoo.com and get a response, so DNS is fine). The problem persists on IE and Firefox. I have no AV software other than MSE, and the problem persists in Safe Mode w/ networking. The hosts file is clean. The internet worked on the computer just fine when I loaded it, I hadn't used the SSD in a while and when I popped it in, the internet wasn't working. I believe something is getting in the way of port 80, but I can't figure out what. I have disabled all startup applications and all nonwindows services. The computer does not have bonjour. I have cleared history/cookies to no avail. I can't find anything suspicious in the running processes. I can't seem to turn off the windows antimalware process to test that, though.

Any ideas?

A:Internet not working, windows update, ping, DNS, etc. working fine

I decided to run hijack this and found two BHO's. It's funny that on my new install that I used a handful of times, I have adware, but on this install that's been going for years, I have nothing. Oh well. So I had "Crossrider" and "Coupon Companion". I removed all traces of both, yet still no go. It looks like this managed to install itself on 12/2... which had to be damn close to the date that I bought the SSD, however, I had internet activity as recent as 12/26. What is listening on 127.0.0.1?

Do you have a web or Database server running at that address (Eg IIS, MySQL or Apache?)

I have used Dreamweavin all its versions except CC and apache server in all versions of windows for the last 18 years. In windows 10, when I attempt to access localhost, all I get is a blank page. In every other version of windows, typing http://localhost/ brings up a screen for apache. Apache is running on my system using port 8080 and 443. However Localhost is not.
As Dreamweaver is more important to me than windows 10, I will have to revert back to my previous version of windows (8.1 or 7 - both worked fine) if I cannot solve this problem. Can anyone help?

Found a solution. Go to programs and features /turn windows programs on or off and remove Internet information services, and Internet Information Services hostable web core. Config apache to port 80 and that fixes localhost after a re-boot. Takes a while to make the changes.
Set your Dreamweaver to use a temporary file to preview its pages and all seems to be fine.
It is possible that some other services may not function, but its horses for courses.
Skype may not work after making these changes.

A:Localhost not working in windows 10

You should of used the port number with localhost

EG:
http://localhost:8080

Hi, yesterday for the first time in about 2 years i had an unpleasant encounter some malware.. "Antivirus 2009" i believe it was called. I managed to get rid of it using Spyware doctor. So there is no trace of it now, but since it happened i can use Internet explorer 6 or 7 with my apache server. They both work with regular websites, but when i try http:/localhost/ or 127.0.0.1 i get nothing! on Firefox / Opera localhost works just fine.

I'm pretty puzzled about all this, has anyone encountered such problem?

only 64 bit browsers wiil work with 64 bit Operating sysytems....

Each of those you listed have 64 bit versions

Set up IE 8 first and get it connected to the net by going to Tool/options...hit the connections tab and fill it in.

When you install the others after fixing up IE... it will copy the connection information from IE and set up automatically.

Personally, I would stick to having just one browser...most of them do pretty much the same thing these days

After tens years of hosting, my other website was just migrated from a Win2000 server to a Win2008 server. You can browse the website just fine but when you try and ping it times out. The only difference between the two websites is that the one that times out when you try and ping it has a dedicated IP address for of a SSL certificate.

I have a BT HomeHub v2 acting as Firewall and DHCP
I have a QNAP NAS and several devices (mostly Windows 7 and iOS devices)

The vast majority of my networking setup seems OK - however on one Windows 7 laptop I am having problems.

If I force ping using the loopback address, then this is my result

So I can't get online on one pc that's wired into the modem - yet another one works fine and so do the wireless connections - so apparently, according to my provider - it's not them or the modem...  While searching the internet and trying different suggestions, I found a webpage in which you detailed various programs for download, ie: Farbar, rkill, FSS, Mini Tool Box etc... After following directions, I have 2 logs to present someone, somewhere - to see if they can help me fix this.  At this moment - Malwarebytes and the anti rootkit are still running - but in the interim, I am attaching the results of the other programs.
(FYI: still haven't run rkill - waiting for scans to finish...)

Today I tried to change my dns thinking the problem was from my ISP (used the free google dns) but nothing worked. I then tried to disable the card to re-enable it thinking it could change something ... and that was the mistake !!
Once I clicked on disable, the system worked for like 10 minutes to success and it was even longer to reactivate it. I the tried to reboot, the system worked for 15 minutes before to be able to. Go on the "network page setting" (don't know how to say in english) could take 10minutes too !
Anyway, after some disable/enable tricks, all "seemed" to be back to normal. But after some times the connection droped again. I cheked my (windows) firewall, disabled it, did same for kaspersky and the problem was still there.
I tried to ping Ip outside my local network, not working. I then tried 127.0.0.1 and IMPOSSIBLE to ping !!!

I wanted to reboot and during the process to stop the system I got a blue screen (minidump log are there Free - Envoyez vos documents).

After the restart I tried to ping again 127.0.0.1 and here is the result. I don't get why it's not consistent ...

A:Network drop (bad localhost ping) under 7-64bits

Due to being unable to ping local host this means busted card. If it's an on board card, which it sounds like it is, it could be due to a dying motherboard. I've never seen this caused by "bad drivers"... but that doesn't mean it's not possible.

You can first try updating your nic driver. Also verify that the tcp properties are set correctly. Preferably dynamic.

I would change your dns server to your dhcp / gateway address as well for testing.

Hello, I'm running Windows 10 and found Windows Defender alerting me of Rootkit/patched, it looks like I'm having the same issue as some of the other forum members here. I've run FSS and it informed me that
localhost was blocked, cannot access the internet. I've tried running MBAM and MBAR, but MBAM won't run, due to the lack of dnsapi.dll and I can't update new definitions for the tools. Also another member was asked to use CSET online scannner and that option isn't available to me either at the moment. Here is the logfile for FRST and I've attached Addition.txt

Hi,

Firstly I am no n00b when it comes to operating systems.  I have been playing this game for more years than I care.  However this thing has got me well and truly stumped.

Not too long ago I believe my machine must have been hit with a rootkit virus of some sort.  I run AVG but for reasons it did not pick this up.  None the less, this has now been cleaned.

Initially it took out my network cards, my wirless, my firewall, renamed my machine with no name, and all sorts of fun things.  Good times, but now mostly resolved.  What I still don't have is internet access.

I am connected to my router (along with my other equipment), trusting in DHCP which works as it should.  I am running Windows 7 home edition (64 bit).  Now the fun part.....I am unable to ping anything by hostname.  Absolutely nada.
I can't can't ping localhost "Ping request could not find host localhost. Please check the name and try again.".  In fact I can throw anything I like in the host file and it will come up with the same error.

I can 100% ping everything via IP address, no issues.
I get 100% responses from nslookup.
I am unable to ping by hostname only.  This is somewhat troublesome as this prevents me from getting to the internet and other things.
I have reset winsock, I have reset tcp, I have uninstalled both my nics and reinstalled them, I have uninstalled SP1 and reinstalled it.  I suspe... Read more

Sorry if this rather obscure issue has been discussed elsewhere, but I wasn't able to find anything about this topic. Oh, and CenturyLink online chat Tech Support was unable to help and unwilling to escalate to another level of support (what's up with that???).

I had a quick and dirty script that I used to acquire my WAN IP address using the "r" switch of the PING command. I run it daily and the last time it appears to have worked was 8/15/12 ( could be a few days off with the date).

A ping without the "r" works just fine.... as in this example:
>ping -n 1 8.8.8.8

Pinging 8.8.8.8 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=66ms TTL=49

Ping statistics for 8.8.8.8:
Packets: Sent = 1, Received = 1, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 66ms, Maximum = 66ms, Average = 66ms

But adding the "-r 1" to the command results in a TIMEOUT:
>ping -r 1 -n 1 8.8.8.8

Pinging 8.8.8.8 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 8.8.8.8:
Packets: Sent = 1, Received = 0, Lost = 1 (100% loss),

After doing a tracert to see the hops along the way, I found that a ping to the second hop with the "r" switch is the one where the timeout occurs.

>tracert 8.8.8.8

Tracing route to google-public-dns-a.google.com [8.8.8.8]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 5 ms 1 ms 1 ms qwestmodem.domain.actdsltmp [192.168.0.1]

A:Ping,FTP,tracert is not working

If you search your \windows folder for ping.exe, is it there?

Either the executables have been somehow deleted or moved, or your PATH variable is messed up to the point where the commands won't work unless you're in the exact same directory where the respective executable is located. I'm guessing it's the latter.

What do you get if you type simply PATH on a command prompt?

I cannot get regedit to work, all i get is a command prompt window with C:\windows\system32\regedit.com unless i type regedit.exe in the run box and then it works, but it is annoying.
Also now I can't seem to get a response when i ping anything, including my own site, the web is otherwise fully accesable. They are probably not related but any help on either would be good.

A:regedit & ping not working

You have two copies of regedit in the system path, one named regedit.com and the other regedit.exe

Regedit.exe should be in c:\windows

And there should be no regedit.com at all unless you are naming it that way for troubleshooting purposes.

I don't know what the problem with ping is unless you are using the syntax incorrectly or perhaps the command is being blocked by a firewall.

examples of pings:

ping www.techguy.org

Pinging techguy.org [24.137.12.228] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 24.137.12.228: bytes=32 time=251ms TTL=48

Ping statistics for 24.137.12.228:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 247ms, Maximum = 261ms, Average = 252ms

C:\Documents and Settings\Rollin' Rog>ping 24.137.12.228

I thank you in advance for your help,

I have the following issues with my computer:

1) I get frequent pop-ups with the message "TCP/IP Ping Command has stopped working"
Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.
(option) Check online for a solution (recommended)
(option) Close
2) AVG pop-ups appear frequently with "Threat Deleted" notices
3) Firefox and IE freeze for periods of time, then continue.
4) I lose Internet Access for periods of time (no doubt accounting for 3 above)
5) Occasionally I lose Internet Access altogether and have to turn my internet modem off, unplug it for 10
secs, plug it back in and turn it on again to regain access.
6) I also get the occasional BSOD - maybe 2-3 times per week.
The problems started after I ran Malwarebytes the last time. MB "fixed" a couple of malware issues, but
does not show any issues when I run it now.

I have the following System:

Dell XPS M1330 Specs
Model: Inspiron M1330
Processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU T7500 @ 2.20 GHz
RAM: 3.0 GB
System Type: 32-bit Operating System

Hey peeps, I've recently started getting error messages when booting my pc and it would seem to me that it ain't right.
It could possibly have something to do with the searchgol.com that is suddenly my homepage on FF, while I did not choose for this (and I'm careful with not checking boxes during installations to prevent them messing with my browsers and/or homepages)

Would be great if someone could look at the HijackThis log and reply whether or not I need to do something about it;

Hi Guys,

I'm currently having problems with cmd prompt.
The issue happened like this.

Yesterday I was trying to create a shortcut to cmd prompt so after typing 'cmd' in the search bar after pressing start, I dragged the 'cmd.exe' that search found out onto the desktop.

I didn't use 'cmd.exe' on the desktop it straight away, as I was doing other stuff, but the computer was later restarted.

I tried using 'cmd.exe' from the desktop today but issuing 'ping' and 'ipconfig' did nothing. See below I've typed out what I see when I issue the commands, nothing happens, it just goes back to the prompt again. I also noticed that the start location is different from usual, it's "C:\Users\***>" as opposed to the default start directory.

C:\Users\*****>ipconfig

C:\Users\*****>ping 4.4.4.4

C:\Users\*****>

I then checked C:\Windows\Systems32 and found that the cmd.exe had been actually pulled out and is the 'cmd.exe' on the desktop, I put it back in but now the two commands still doesn't work. ipconfig.exe and ping.exe are all in the folder.

I tried changing my environment variables but they've not helped. I'm not sure what could be the problem and if anyone can help it'd be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi All.

I have been working on a laptop the last 2 days and it has me stumped. I was told there was no internet connection and that's about all.
So far I have done several virus/ malware/ spyware scans. Removed "tool"bars, temp folders and all the usual general clean ups.
I have updated and reinstalled all network drivers and uninstalled all browsers (after testing them) except IE.
Ran repairs on network protocols and settings, checked IP config etc.
I have internet connection going by windows 7 network sharing center and I am receiving updates for windows and adobe. So I believe I have internet connection.
It has me stumped, I'm thinking a registry key or such has been corrupted and a full clean install. But I'm hoping its fixable.
I had to go home early and talk to Jim Beam to relax and get this off my chest. Thing is he's a good listener but not a sage of advice.
Tools I have ran and have at hand are D7 and Hirens, I want to fix this and learn somthing, so anyone got a an idea?
Cheers in advance.

Initially, weeks ago, I couldn't connect to wifi but I got that resolved. Then none of my browsers would work so I tried all the suggested fixes I could find. One of those was uninstalling my upgraded anti virus from avast but I wasn't sure that was a good move to leave my computer vulnerable to viruses so I just set it to minimal protection. Then I tried Firefox, chrome and for the hell of it, internet explorer (hey, I was desperate!) Firefox partially opens and then freezes saying it's no longer responding. Upon opening i.e. it promptly closes and a window pops up that says internet explorer cannot download rdr.aspx from homepage.gateway.com. Directly below that it says ie was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later. Behind that window a download box opens and shows files flying into a folder but it's at 0% and stays that way. Chrome will actually open and then when I start typing in the url it freezes and says it's not responding. I need to also mention that I'm not always able to get into the control panel anymore, it too freezes and eventually says it's not responding.
This gateway laptop was rarely used and does not have much i... Read more

I hope someone here has a solution to my problem

Thanks!

I just got high speed Internet and I connected it to my Dell desktop computer running windows 7 model (inspiron 560) processor (intel (r) celeron cpu 450 2.20ghz 64bit operating system and it's connected but my Web browsers (Google chrome and Internet Explorer) won't work. They act like they're tryna load but it doesnt. It jus says page cannot be displayed. The century link technical support guy said it's not the Internet because he command prompted a ping and Google said hi back. I'm not sure what to do.

A:Web browsers not working (none)

Control Panel - Internet Options - Connections tab - LAN Settings - make sure none of the three options are selected (unless, of course, you really are using a proxy).

Make sure you don't have a firewall (or security suite) blocking your browsers.
