Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit blinking white dash!

Q: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit blinking white dash!

I got my Radeon 6570 today and I installed it, but now Windows won't boot it just gives me the blinking white dash. So I removed the card, switched back to onboard from BIOS and it still didn't work. I tried a lot of other stuff but it didn't work so I reinstalled Windows with the graphics card removed (Hoping it would reinstall the drivers for the onboard video) it didn't. So then I tried booting from an old Linux disc I found and it worked (how I am typing) but Windows still won't. Any help? I ran a diagnostics text and everything is working, and I can even access all my personal files on my old Windows install from Linux so I know that it's active.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

check inside your case for connections to your harddrive. also check your bios boot settings and see if the os drive is first.

Hey guys, here I am again with another failure.
Today morning I woke up to my windows refusing to boot. It just does the white dash blinking in the top left corner (it jumps down a bit at first, then just keeps blinking endlessly). I'm aware that this can be a result of a poor shutdown or a crash or modified system files or program installation, or whatever. The thing is last night I was using the computer fine and I didn't install anything, modify anything, and it shut down correctly (as far as I know - after I clicked shut down I shut off the monitors and went somewhere else, and just when I came back it turned off so I assume it was fine).

I've tried a number of things already. First, I'm booting from an Ubuntu CD right now and my files are all fine and intact on the C:\ drive. Second, I tried running my Windows 7 CD to go into the recovery system and tried a bunch of things.

The recovery thing doesn't detect my operating system, first of all, but I've had this issue before. I remember that I got it to work somehow, but I don't remember how. I think it might have been a disc that I burned with a modification that allowed it to detect the system (I used some tutorials over at sevenforums.com, can't remember which ones now though). I'll look for the CD, I might have it somewhere.
EDIT: I found what I presume is the CD but it doesn't even want to boot. I'll try looking for whatever I found before and make another one, I guess. But if I could get it to det... Read more

A:Help - Windows won't boot, white dash blinking endlessly.

From what you have written, this should be impossible but I suggest you to press F8 right before booting into windows, and select 'Use last known good config'.
This issue sound really hopeless, but if you could manage to boot into any windows which is on another partition (if you have any), you could rebuild the MBR manually (master boot record) which stores the OS information.
Do you have another disk/partition?
If yes, the best would be to install W7 on it (takes 20mins) do the above things (I will explain it further if you have another partition) and then boot back into your original OS and would be able to delete the 'blank' windows 7 installation files from the orher partition.

Hi! Sorry for opening a new thread but this is just so serious and I am so stressed out about it that I didn't have the patience to search if the thread is already open.
I have a black screen and white blinking dash problem. The thing is, I can't even type f2 or f4, or anything whatsoever. It is not reacting at all to the keyboard. It's the second time this is happening in 2 days, every time I turn it off (properly) and try to turn it on, it does that. After a lot of hopeless trying to turn it on or make f2 or f4 work, it just starts working again normally... And now I finally turned it on after I spent the whole morning trying and I'm working on saving all my files, but now I'm scared to turn it off. What do I do?? What is wrong with my computer?

Hi everybody,

First of all, sorry about my English.

Few days ago, I was working on my laptop (ASUS X5DI) and when I decide shuting down, I realize that needs to intall updates. I let him to shut down by itself and do it fine without any problems.

Next day, when I turn on the computer again, the show me this (its spanish but i think you'll know what screen is):

I thought then, that something in the update process went wrong, so I try to fix it. First, I tried it by click on the "Repair Startup" option in that image menu. A message box that wants to select a keyboard language appeared but after that and some comprobations of the process, It said to me with an alert box that it couldn't be possible:

Then..  this other screen appeared:

I click on the options, even in the prompt option, and tried to fix it with bootrec commands like /fixboot or /fixmbr but nothing fix the problem.

So... What I decided? the solution that "never fail" ... format all my pc again and get a "new" computer hahaha..

I get into the BIOS and change the boot order to start from CD/DVD. Save changes, introduce the Windows 7 disc and restart.

I realized that my computer cant start from cd/dvd because that white blinking cursor appears on the top left of the screen.

I tried with different CD/DVD even Ubuntu CD and always the blink cursor appears. So... if I use HDD boot in BIOS appears the screen on the top... Read more

My computer, which was running windows 10 without much issue, is now completely unusable for reasons beyond my comprehension. After bios messages I now only have a blinking white dash on a black screen.

I have tried various repairs, with the windows recovery usb. All automatic repairs fail due to the disk "being locked", so i have tried a few guides which involved bcdboot commands which have failed to fix anything. One command was bcdboot g: which gave an error like failed copying boot files (i forget the exact wording) .

Could some kind soul point me towards a fix, im tearing my hair out! Many thanks!

I have several hours working on laptop that suddenly wont startup OS win 7. When I turn on laptop shows HP main logo (Press "ESC" key to enter start up menu) and after that shows a white dash flashing on the top left corner. I tried system repair disc, but it didnt work. I tried to restore system to an earlier point and didnt work either, it showed an error (0x8000ffff). I tried to restore to factory settings using F11 key but it only shows the white blinking. I already tried everything I found on the internet but no success. Thanks in advance if somebody can help me.

First, i restarted my stupid computer
Then, i got that grub error.
I happily fixed that.
However, when I restarted it again,
I got stuck at black screen with stupid blinkking white dash.
So I use the Recovery Disc thingy
And i clicked that first option.
Then it says, something like
unable to fix it.
Then it says that the stupid missing boot thingy is missing.
Googled for solution.
Tried those command prompt like
Fixmbr or scanos
(it says theres an installation
I typed Y for yes and still,
That boot missing chkdsk thingy still pops up)
Remove hardwares (wait whats a hardware is it those usb thingy?)
Checked the BIOS which I googled again for its meaning.(and yes, it is in order)
But never worked.
So any suggestions or explain with more detail?
Because I have no idea about these computer stuffs.
Help me !

Hello, I am trying to install Windows XP (because Windows 7 is damn slow) Corporate Edition 64-bit but after the Copying Windows Files setup portion, the setup wants to restart my computer, but after the motherboard logo, I just get the blacnk screen with white dash - if CD is inserted I get "Press any key to boot from CD....." and a white dash at the end with nothing happening. I've searched for a solution everywhere, but I didn't find my case. I have installed XP atleas 20 times on this computer, and I've never had such problem before. I thought it could be because of the 64-bit version, but after trying to install the 32-bit version I have got the same issue, which has never happened before. Windows 7 installs perfectly. I have: removed the CD from the drive; Updated the BIOS to the last version; Tried running in safe mode and nothing helped. My computer specs are: Processor: Intel Pentium DualCore @ 2.80 GHz, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 650GB HDD SATA2, ATI HD 4770 512MB DDR5 Graphics Card, American Megatrends Inc. 0502 BIOS. I hope there's somebody out there to help me because I really want XP.

A:Black screen with white dash after first portion of Windows Setup?

Seems that Windows XP installation is not detecting or having problems with your SATA2 drive.

Try going to BIOS and Switching the SATA2 drive out of RAID mode if possible see if that helps.

Windows Xp has issues with SATA2 Drives.

Or you may need to slipstream your copy of Xp with sp2 or 3 if your cd is only SP1 for it to recognize and work with SATA drives. Also with SATA drives I believe Windows XP only recognizes 128GB 137GB SATA drives.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with an upgrade to windows 7 from vista. Yesterday my computer was really slow so I reset it to try and speed it up. I got passed the Vaio screen but then came the black screen with the blinking dash on the top right corner. The only thing I can enter is BIOS with F2 nothing else works. I can't enter safe mode or anything else. I've tried a few things, but nothing works.

1. Reseting default values in BIOS
2. Removing everything but internal Hard Drive in boot menu.

I have a windows & start up disc

3. Ran Startup Repair: Says couldn't detect a problem if recently attached device then remove it. ( Nothings Connected)
4. System restore ( was successfull but still no go)
5. Ran chkdsk & chkdsk/r from command prompt option

I also contacted Sony Support and with the 15 minutes alotted

6. Reseated memory

I just want to be able to get into the computer one more time so I can transfer my music and some other important files to my External Hard Drive. Please HELP!!! Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Hello Nicole and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you've already done a reinstall of Windows 7 and the problem has returned, I think I'd start looking at hardware issues. Perhaps a hard drive, RAM, motherboard, etc that's failing. One of the Forum experts has prepared a couple of troubleshooting guides that might help isolate the problem. I might start with the Memtest86 and HD Diagnostics test outlined in Steps 8 and 9, first tutorial.

Hi sherm12789 and welcome to TSF

Start up your computer by either tapping the F1, F2, F4, F6, F8, F10, F11, F12, or Delete keys to access the systems BIOS. For the exact information on what key to start up the System BIOS refer back to Original Manufacturer System Documentation.

After getting into the BIOS, look for a page that would have something like, eg. PC Health Screen or System Monitoring Page. When you have found a page similar to this post back what the BIOS says for your temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds.

Hi all, I am back with yet another problem on my laptop computer. Same computer as my last problem, a HP Pavilion dm4-1160 with Windows 7 OS. This time, the problem that I am experiencing is very similar to this one:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/479942/

Unfortunately, the post that I have linked is no longer applicable (to me), because the person in that post decided to reinstall his/her OS.

Whenever my computer starts up, it is automatically directed to a blank, black screen save for a blinking white cursor on the top-middle of the screen. The Windows logo animation screen does not even appear, it just skips to the aforementioned black screen. I have so far waited about 12 hours for something to happen, and of course nothing happens. I am not redirected to Startup Repair or anywhere else after any reboot.

I recall that prior to this, while I was trying to organise some of my files, my computer suddenly decided to close all programs and shut down on its own for no conspicuous reason.
Once again, system restore points do not work, and I am unable to use Safe Mode or any of its variations, because the computer won't let me do so. Malwarebytes and Spybot are my antivirus programs installed, and the solution of reinstalling the OS itself is off-limits to me because I am unwilling to see the extinction of all of my personal stuff.

A:Windows 7 frozen black screen with white blinking cursor

I apologise, I just realised that I forgot to note that I am unable to provide a FRST.txt log for the computer this time because I am unable to get into Advanced Boot Options. No matter how quickly and repetitively I tap the F8 key, the black screen always manages to come first. I should also note that the white blinking cursor starts off from the top-left corner, then dashes to the top-middle after about a second passes. So consequently, I am unable to get into System Recovery Options and run any program through Command Prompt.

I still await any possible instructions. Again, I apologise if I sound impatient.

Hello!

I tried Linux yesterday, and wrote over my previous Windows bootloader files with GRUB.

I later that day (as I could not boot into Windows 7), I deleted the Linux partitions with Windows 7 DVD.

Now, after BIOS I just get a white blinking border on a black screen.

I tried

bootrec /fixmbr
Success
bootrec /fixboot
Success
bootrec /rebuildbdc
Success
bootrec /scanos (Total identified Windows-installs: 0)

I also tried the "automatic" systemrepair (1st choice in the DVD menu, with no luck)

Can someone please help me?

A:Windows 7 wont boot - black screen, white blinking border

try also restart your bios.. take out your battery bios and put it back. then will reset your bios setting. setting the date/time and see how is going.

Hello, we see a weird behaviour after restoring files from a Acronis Backup to a folder.
We are about upgrading the Computers to Win7.

The Process is:
Make an Image from the client with Acronis 11.0.17440 to external USB HDD.
Clean Harddisk
Install win7.

Up to then all is fine, the system boots after Post (Windows is loading) without delay.
Then we restore the Files from the Image on USB HDD to a local Folder c:\OldData via Boot CD.

After this the System has a delay of ~ 2 Minutes after post with a blinking white cursor, until 'Windows is Loading' appears.

This behaviour also persists if we delete this folder, restore without acl's and so on, so it is
unreversible.

How to Fix this ? Thanks!

A:Blinking White Cursor before Bootlogo

Make an Image from the client with Acronis 11.0.17440 to external USB HDD.

Did you clone the entire hdd, operating system and all?

Clean Harddisk

Does this mean that the hdd was wiped?

What was the original operating system, and what version was it, 32-bit or 64-bit?

What version is Windows 7?

Ok guys here is my dilemma, it's driving me nuts.
I'll start from the beginning
I was having problems with my status bar icons being blank even after a brand new installation and random crashing.
Then my video card failed and was giving the beep error for that.
Replaced the card
Cannot install windows onto hard drive via the PC, the installation gets 90% through loading files and then comes up with an error.
Tried via disk and USB tried both windows 7 and windows 8 to no avail.
I installed windows via my laptop onto my hard drive via a dock using the program to load windows into an external hard drive, it worked and I thought my bad luck had ended.
I booted the hard drive on the laptop and it booted windows.
Now I think yay! Time to put it back into pc thinking the problems fixed.
I press the power button and go through the usual boot sequence until...it goes to the blinking white cursor.
I cannot get past this, have made the hard drive the primary one to be booted from in the bios and still no joy.
Which is why I've come to you guys to find out if anyone has had this problem and know how to fix this

Well can't wait to finally have this issue resolved *crosses fingers

A:Blinking White Cursor startup

You cannot expect Win7 to start up on different hardware with completely different drivers without first using a procedure to Adjust Win7 to boot on new hardware with Paragon Adaptive Restore CD. Then if it still fails to boot with all other HD's unplugged, confirm the Partition Marked Active is 100mb System Reserved (preferred if you have it) or C, then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times .

It would be better to find out why you can't install Win7. Work though the steps for Overcoming Windows 7 Installation Failures - Windows 7 Help Forums which resolve 90% of installation problems.

If you get an error again, then google the error text to find out others have worked around it. Post it back here as well since we may have seen it before.

Hey,
I guess the easiest way to start off is with the problem.
When I try to start up my computer, it will always end at a black screen with a blinking white underscore.
The computer will not boot up any farther than this.
it will get passed the "gateway" logo with the option to hit "Del" or "f12" to go into setup and then boot options.
I am honestly not sure if this is a windows 7 problem with my computer. But this seemed like the most likely option that it could be because I can still boot from my CD drive.
I have made a "Windows 7 recovery disk" from a laptop that is at my house , I have tried to go and use all the options that come with it.
The first option being one that is supposed to fix things wrong with windows 7. Every time i click it, it asks for me to unplug any extra things plugged into my computer and then try again. the thing being with that, I have nothing else besides a keyboard, mouse, monitor and power plugged in.
I have tried to use the system restore option and restore it to an older point. But after it runs for a bit, it says it cannot be restored to that previous point because of an unknown error.
I am not sure what the problem could be. I was hoping someone could lead me to another method of trying to fix the problem.
Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

A:Blinking white underscore upon startup (Help)

The black screen with a blinking cursor can be a difficult problem to fix because there are so many things which can cause this.

Can you boot into Safe Mode?

To boot into Safe Mode press the power button and immediately start tapping the F8 key until you see the Advanced Boot Options.

Use the up or down key to navigate to Safe Mode, then press Enter.

If you can't access Safe Mode try doing a Repair Installation (In place upgrade).

Instructions for a Windows 7 Repair installation.

A Windows 7 Repair Installation will require a installation disc.

If you do not have a Windows 7 installation disc you can download a free legal ISO image of Windows 7 SP1 at  Windows 7 Forums.  You will need to download the same version of Windows 7 that you have installed,  This image is hosted by the Digital River store which is an official distribution partner of Microsoft.  This is a genuine untouched image which is safe to download.

Attention:  If you do have a Windows installation disc, skip Part A and go to Part B, Step 1b.

Part A, Steps 1a - 6a

The ISO image will need to be burned to a DVD in order to create a bootable installation disc.

1a)  To burn a ISO file to a DVD please download ImgBurn and install it.

2a)  Insert a blank DVD into your CD/DVD drive tray, and then close the tray.

3a)  Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to... Read more

Dear people,

A customer brought a Toshiba Satellite M50D-A-10D for repair with the problem "doesn't work"

The first thing I check what was actually happening when I switched on the device. The powerled on the front blinked five times. Googling around for it gave me so many possibilities that it makes me concider it as a standard-all-error-covering blink sequence.

The first things a laptop repairsman tries is to drain the power from the capacitors by ejecting the battery and adapter plug and keep the powerbutton pressed for a little while. 9 out of 10 notebooks are working again after that. Not all, some need the cmos to be reset, so I went after the cmos battery which was easily found. Bummer it was soldered to the board with a reset button next to it. You never know a button works, while you do know the battery doesn't do a thing when it's out. The reset button didn't do anything, so I soldered the cmos battery out. Still nothing. Just the led blinking 5 times.

The only things working are the powerbutton and the fan. The power off by keeping the button pressed for 4.5 seconds works, so something understands my intensions when I press the button. Still that's all. The hard drive doesn't start spinning and the backlight of the screen doesn't switch on.

Then the problem elimination procedures start. Everything got clipped off from the mainboard:
- Battery
- cmos battery
- Speakers
- The USB part which isn't onboard
- The screen
- The Wifi adapter ... Read more

When I connect the AC plugin to my laptop the light is Amber then after a few seconds it starts blinking white. When I turn it on the screen has no picture it's just white and the laptop never charges. Can anyone help?

A:White blinking light at AC plugin

Hold the power button down for 10 seconds to make sure it is powered off and then try to boot it.  If that does not work, leave it unplugged and powered on until the battery runs completely down and then reconnect the charger and try to boot it.

I have a HP-Pavilion dv6-6115tx laptop.  I had not used the laptop for 2 weeks, before which everything was working fine. Now the battery doesn't seem to charge. The laptop works only via AC adapter, and shows "plugged in, 0% available" in the battery icon.  I tried to turn off the laptop and charge it for a couple of minutes, but a white light keeps blinking near the charging port.  I have tried the hard reset but removing the battery, turning off the machine and pressing the power button for a minute. But it doesn't seem to work, the problem persists.  The battery is 1.5 years old, which was working perfectly fine (would last 5 hours without AC).

We cannot seem to troubleshoot this laptop, we have tried a large amount of solutions and cannot seem to figure it out.The most likely culprit that we cannot test currently is that the laptop is not recieving the required amount of power for the new screen that was recently installed. It does not turn on the only thing that shows any sign of power is a white blinking light where the charger is. We have tried the remove the battery  and/or charger and hold down the power for 30 seconds. This is the new screen https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA49H1VK6589&cm_re=hp_probook_4530s_replacement_s...

Hi everyone,

(I've looked around on this forum and others, but still I haven't been able to solve my problem. I'm sorry if I've missed any topic that represents the same issue or presents the solution. Anyway, here it is: )

I fell for the offer to upgrade my OEM Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 10 on my ASUS N55SF, but directly after the installation I was greeted by a black screen with a blinking white underscore in the top left corner directly after startup screen!

I contacted Microsoft support, who couldn't help me very much. They said it probably had something to do with a conflict between my graphic card drivers and Win 10, and my only solution was to reinstall Win 7 with my recovery disc.

I have now found the recovery disc, formatted my system partition and reinstalled Win 7, only resulting in the same black screen with the blinking underscore! The system repair makes no difference. I've run chkdsk /r and everything seemed alright.

By the way, somehow the primary partition (number 2 in my case) is now labelled "E:". I don't know if that affects anything though.
Partition 1 is "RECOVERY", 25Gb (primary)
Partition 2 is the old system partition, 168Gb (primary)
Partition 3 is the system reserved partition, 100Mb (system)
Partition 4 is "DATA" where I have stored all my personal files, 505Gb (logical)

What am I to do?

I'm very thankful for your help and advice. I'm sorry for any misspellings or weird sentences, I'm Swedish a... Read more

A:Blinking white underscore, even after reinstalling Win7!

The first thing I would try is setting your BIOS settings back to default. Reboot and see if you still have the blank screen.

If your data on the 505GB partition is backed up you can do a factory reset if your Recovery Partition is intact. I believe for ASUS you tap F9 at boot. If you have a setting in BIOS called Boot Booster disable it.

All data you currently have on the computer will be wiped including any programs you installed.

Normally you do not need to partition the hard drive on a clean install. You would use the Advanced option. Delete all your partitions except your Data Partition then press next. Windows will automatically partition and format the unallocated space but because your Recovery Partition is at the beginning of the disk I would not recommend doing it.

Hi, I can't get my computer (Vista) to start. When I turn it on, all I get is a blinking little white line in the upper left corner of the screen. Nothing else before nor after. I tried to unplug/plug, turn off/on lots of times and nothing seems to work. I also put the installation cd in but it doesn't seem to do anything. I tried pressing any key but it doesn't do anything (also, I can't switch the num or maj key).

It does that every time I turn the computer on. Before that, I was using it when suddenly a message appeared saying something was wrong with the hard drive I think and the icons on the bar disappeared and the icons on the desktop were transparent (as if I cut them). I did a restart and got stuck on the screen with the blinking line.

Anyone has an idea on how to fix this? Thanks :P

A:PC won't boot; blinking white light in top left

Edit: Okay, I accessed the BIOS or something by holding DEL and by disabling the quick start option I could access my Vista cd. I'm still not sure what to do now, at least I have some options.

Just bought this Omen 17.3 inch today, and after a few hours, I finally noticed that the HDD light was white and flashing constantly. I'm not sure if this is due to the McAfee that was pre-installed on this laptop that is constantly working the CPU, or a defunct in the hardware. Could it possibly be the antivirus causing this?

A:Rapidly blinking white HDD light? (HP Omen 17)

Hit ctrl alt delete while Windows is running and you bring up task manager. In the lower left corner click "more details". It shows activity and what is using how much cpu, memory, disk, etc. I am not a big fan of McAfee and there are several much better antivirus programs you can use. Avast, AVG, Kaspersky, all good and there are free versions of Avast and AVG. I do not advise people I like to use McAfee or Norton...I do not work for HP and do not officially speak for them and I am sure they have a good reason for installing McAfee.
