The drive where Windows is installed is locked

Q: The drive where Windows is installed is locked

Dear Community My Axer 3830T laptop downloaded a Windows 10 update, after 30 minutes it auto-booted to a blue screen that reads: "Recovery - your PC/Device needs to be repaired" Error Code 0xc000000fthere are two options, F8 for start up settings and F9 fto use a different operating systemI tried both, but after going through all sub menus and options, I'm back at the beginning;when choosing the "reset this PC" option, it tells me "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."The free Microsoft Media Creation Tool and Windows 10 ISO/ setup files are therefore useless as long as my drive is locked and the volume write protected!please I'm grateful for any helpful advice as to how to unlockH

Preferred Solution: The drive where Windows is installed is locked

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Your problem may simply be one of making sure your privileges are set properly. But, do not take ownership of your C: drive in an attempt to solve your problem. See these links:

A:the drive where windows is installed is locked

Unless you know the password or can get the drive manufacturer to give you some kind of master reset password, the drive's as good as useless. Long story short, I was told this, in person, by a Toshiba engineer a couple years back. They have no way of undoing passwords set at the BIOS/uEFI level on a drive. Now, if we're talking some other kind of drive locking, you'll need to be more specific.

Gents,
Desperate dad here.
16 y/o muppet bought HP Notebook with Windows 7 installed 2 months ago + licence to download Windows 8 once released.
Been working on it for two months, mainly school work.  Did not back up his work ....(hind sight is a beautiful thing)

Last Friday downloaded windows 8. Last I heard.... hey dad windows 8 is now downloading and it'll take 8 hours.....how cool is that !!
Cool as it may be.....apparently it worked on Saturday but on Sunday morning he came down and said he had a problem.  If I could help.... hahahhahaha ...me???
The laptop goes straight into repair mode and then into blue screen with repair/reset and advanced repair options.

what ever you do the main feature is :  "the drive where windows is installed is locked" please unlock and....... etc... etc....  the damn thing wont even let you in, so how do you unlock ?
Muppet is concerned that if he resets to Factory settings that all his school work will disappear hence wiping out last terms' work.....

The outfit that sold him the machine says its a Software fault and dont want to touch it.  Go and call Microsoft is the only thing the spotty guy utters.
Any bright bunnies out there with advice ?

Used Lenovo OS recovery DVD's for Win8.1 to setup machine (old system crashed and couldn't be recovered) back to factory default. Once in Windows, used the Recovery tool (Control Panel -> Recovery) to create a recovery USB drive. Followed instructions from https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht080887 and created a recovery USB drive. I then wanted to test this drive before I loaded all my applications and again followed the instructions in that article to "reset pc" using the USB drive. It appeared to reset the pc (I watched it go from 0% up to just about 100%) and then it rebooted. After reboot, it went right back into the USB recovery drive. I removed the USB drive and rebooted it again, and got a "no operating system..." error. When I insert the USB recovery drive back in and use the utility, it tells me the drive is locked. This tells me it didn't "reset pc" like it was supposed to do, but I followed everything to a "t". Any suggestions?

Hi -

i accidentally Locked myself out of a drive of my computer.
I am on windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit OS with NTFS File system.

Here is what i did:

Right click the Drive G: >> Properties
Security Tab: >>

I see 4 under Groups and User names.
Authenticated Users
SYSTEM
Administrators (CHETAN\Administrators)
Users (CHETAN\Users)

FYI (Chetan is the name of my computer.)

I clicked the last one... [Users (CHETAN\Users)]
Clicked the Edit button and Selected Deny for All of them.

and there we are... i even myself can't access the drive now.

Even after turning the hidden administrator account... i can't do it.

You could try running a System Restore and scroll down to Option Two, or booting into Safe Mode by repeatedly hitting the F8 key during Bootup and selecting Safe Mode, just chose the normal Safe Mode and if you can get logged in change everything back to Allow All..

If that doesn't work try doing this:

Hi,

Yesterday I was working on some stuff on my computer and left it when my door rang. When I came back the computer was on but no matter how many times I tried to move the mouse or press keyboard shortcuts Windows wouldn't come back on. So I manually powered down, and then it got worse. It wouldn't repair manually or from the Windows disk. I tried all kinds of stuff. I tried a refresh install but I got this

"The drive where Windows is installed is locked"
Then this morning when I went back to back to turn it on and trouble shot. All I got was a black screen. No NVIDIA window or anything.

Please help!

Thanks

A:Windows 8 drive locked?

Hardware problem??? Mobo??? Hard Drive??? Are your files backed up off computer? If yes, try reinstalling with the Win8 DVD. Doesn't sound promising though. Don't try if you are afraid of losing anything on your computer. Note that your drive might not be bad. Thus, file recovery might be possible via another computer or your computer if repaired.

I was surprised when Windows 10 was being uploaded last Thursday morning. I was still not sure about 10 and decided to stay with Windows 8 so I declined the upgrade. My Dell started to reload 8. I made a BIG mistake and shut the system down and found out that my unit is now not working. I did not download the Windows 8 disk when I got my Dell and it is out of warranty. I have a friend that works with Dell and he gave me a recovery disk. I can now boot up to the advance options mode. However it will not recover as I am getting either a hard disk lock and or a disk partition error. When I try to do a complete 8 reinstall from the disk it requires a key. My Dell did not have the key listed on the box as I have been told that it was loaded to the bios on the mother board. Dell support has been no help as they had me run a diagnosis and all checked out. They told me to run the reinstall from my recovery disk. When it asked for the key they said my hard drive must be replaced?

I recently upgraded from windows 8 release preview to windows 8 Pro, i did this successfully but after a windows update i tried to boot my computer but it fails. and error code shows up on the new windows boot saying that the hard drive is locked and it cant boot from it. I am unable to refresh or reset the operating system. Luckily my computer also runs windows 7, on a separate hard drive, which i am able to assess the windows 8 hard drive from to get to my files.

Does anyone know what has happened here and how i could fix the problem. I could upgrade windows 7 to windows 8 but i like having a back-up OS for these situations.

I have an hp pavilion model # 14-b109wm serial - 5cd33431m5 product - e0x7oua#aba  for the past 2 years since I've had it there has been nothing but continuous issues starting with when I updated it for the first time, repair getting stuck in a continuous loop, crashes, not starting up. Etc. I decided to purchase a 32gb usb which would be the recovery usb  I would use to reset my laptop to factory settings, it worked and I decided to turn off automatic updates so that my windows would not update and mess my computer up again. It worked for the first few months without a hitch, suddenly my laptop would crash randomly and not load up anything. My laptop was in a useless state, I had configured it to be the reason of my disk usage being at 100% . I've read severel forums on how to prevent 100% disk usage but nothing helped me I tried disabling super fetch, Windows search. I've tried resetting my laptop to factory setting again. Still sadly facing this inconclusive issue. As I was trying to fix this 100% disk usage issue which included me to turn off my laptop and turn it back on I was faced with the message - not able to boot, insert boot disk and press any key. Something like that, so I inserted my recovery usb to maybe refresh or restore my laptop it would inform me that the Windows drive was locked. I'm at a loss honestly, I have no idea what's caused this or why even my recovery usb won't fix this. But I am not able to reach to hp chat support ( frustrating ) ... Read more

Running W8 on a machine with motherboard RAID 5 (five drives, Intel z68 SATA controllers) with an SSD cache. Machine has run fine for about 6 months. While running, froze up. Rebooted but got Automatic Repair, which did not work. Neither Reset nor Refresh
will work, as they report drive is locked. BIOS shows RAID array is functioning; did a sync of SSD with the array, no help. Comand line shows an X drive that appears to be my C drive. DiSKPART shows no disks at all. CHKDSK will not work, reports drives locked.
Tried Win8 install disk, it reports no drives.
I have check cables and power. I am not convinced this is a hardware issue since the command line shows my boot drive files.
Any recommendations about what to do?

I tried to use the program to transfer files from one computer to my new one. The usb holds 1 gig while the files were 1.6 gigs. Windows easy Transfer told me to copy up to one gig on the usb and put it on the new computer, delete the files and then put it back in the old one to get the rest of the files. So i did that, but when the rest of the 600 megs was on the usb. It made an *.MIG file that when I ran it asked for the first disk. Naturally I had no idea what it was talking about so I tried to delete it. But the drive is all of a sudden write protected. I tried to reformat the drive but it stills says it disk is protected. How to I get this stuff off my drive and disable the write protection so I can have my usb disk back as normal. Before the windows easy transfer messed with it. Thanks for any speedy responses.

Some USB drives (many in fact) have a minute little slide switch to lock and unlock the write access.

Hi all,

My laptop suddenly turned off because the battery was drained and I didn't have the power hooked up. Upon restarting windows, I got this message

so I clicked on the troubleshoot option and selected "Automatic repair" and then got this message

I went back to the main screen and just shut my laptop down again, only to be met with the same "trouble shooting" screen. I then tried to do the "disc image" option and got this message

since that didn't work, I decided to try the "refresh your pc" (save all files) option

and got this error message

Hi all, I joined the forum because I?ve been going around in circles trying to fix my computer. Apologies for huge first post. The post by "aristotletalks" about 3/4 down page 1 of this thread sums up most of the pages I've read and things I've attempted: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...3457b4a?page=1

I?m running:
Windows 8.1
Toshiba Satellite C55A-5300 (pre-installed Win 8 - no install DVD)
Intel Celeron 1.8 GHz
12 GB RAM
500 GB HDD

I?ll try to be succinct: I can?t boot my machine except with the Recovery USB I created from MS website, and when I do that I can?t get to System Restore points or Refresh because the ?hard disk where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock and try again.? I?ve spent about 12 hours the last couple days on all kinds of forums reading about this and think I?m just going in circles at this point. I?d really like to recover the data off the drive because my backup HD also just failed this week. I?ve tried:

EasyRE software (https://neosmart.net/EasyRE/) ? it says none of the drives are active or mountable

I ran chkdsk and it was estimating it?d take 60+ days to complete!? (I stopped it). C: was showing up fine.

I?ve run various diskpart commands and have been able to see the hard disk and that it?s ?Healthy?, so it looks like the drive is noticed, but it is not "active". When I tried selecting it and setting to "active" the message showed that "disk is not a fixed MBR disk".

Hi all,
I am relatively new to this forum, but I need some help figuring out this issue with my PC. In short, I cannot reinstall either Windows 8 or 7 from a new disk. I can't do the Windows 8 refresh, nor can I do the restore. I have looked at other forums, and nothing has seemed to work. Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

If you'd like to know what exactly has happened, I will outline my story.
1. Using the Windows Upgrade Assistant, I upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7 a month ago.
2. My performance on various programs diminished.
3. In an attempt to solve the situation, I tried to reinstall Windows from the Reinstall CD. I was able to get to the point where is asked for a partition to install on, but it said no partitions were available.
4. I tried the Windows Refresh, and Reset tool. That failed because it asked for install media, and said the drive was locked. That is where I am now
NOTE: I can still boot up into Windows 8 even though the reinstall disk claims that the disk is locked.

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!

My windows 8 drive has become locked.  Using Hiren's boot disk I can see that content is on there and I see many drives.  However, chkdsk doesn't recognize the drive and gives data cyclical redundancy errors.

But, being in legacy does appear to lock up the drives.

Hi Im getting a bios lock code, and the usual can not find boot device but when i get into the boot selection menu it won't see my USB copy, now I don't know if hp laptops let you boot off USB sticks to install a clean copy of Windows or not, If not I'll make a cd.

A:Installed ssd won't let me boot, bios locked

HP laptops do normally allow booting from USB. If you have the flash drive in a USB 3.0 port try moving it to a USB 2.0 port. Normally USB 2.0 port is on the right side when facing the laptop.

Recently, my PC running in Windows 2000 Professional became infected by various viruses such as Trojan.Vundo, and despite my efforts to stop the infection they eventually corrupted my critical system files and rendered my processes dead slow and 100% CPU hogging, even in Safe Mode.

After trying every possible alternative, I finally installed a new copy of Windows XP Professional w/SP2 onto my hard drive, and proceeded to delete the virus-ridden WINNT directory as soon as I could. It was only then that I realized I had left lots of important data within the My Documents folder and its subdirectories under Win2K. Unfortunately, I had taken advantage of the sharing rules in Win2K's folder options to insure that only that specific user account had any access to its folders, and so now I am stuck in Windows XP, unable to access much of my important data. I tried creating a new user with the same name as the old one, but all that got me in Documents and Settings was a new XP folder "A.COMPUTERNAME" next to the old W2K folder "A". When trying to access user A's folder under Documents and Settings, I get an "Access Denied" message, and am unable to see the size of the folder nor its contents by mousing over it; I can figure out no way to get around the encryption.

Yeah, I know that one of the first things one does when installing a new OS is to back up all of your data, but my computer was already afflicted to a point where I couldn't ma... Read more

I was in the process of copying files (unrelated, i.e. no media files whatsoever, just simple drag and drop of pdf and word files) from a CD to my hard drive and when I went back to My Documents Library, the My Pictures, Videos, and Music folders had been duplicated.

One set of each has what looks like a shortcut symbol and the other set has a golden colored padlock. I cannot get into either set - access denied.

I have no idea what happened and despite poking around both the properties and the share menu, I have no idea how to 1) unlock/stop getting "access denied" on all six of the folders and 2) how/which one to get rid of.
I would really, really appreciate any feedback on this problem, which strangely just seemed to occur. I do not want to lose the contents of these files -- although they are all completely backed up - I am just more perplexed and annoyed.
Thanks, Avery2000

Ok-I was reinstalling Windows 7 on my Dell Inspiron 1750. I, by mistake, installed it on the D/Recovery Drive. Did not realize this until I went to install my MS Office again. After realizing my mistake I reinstalled on the C drive. Now I have Windows 7 on C and D. My recovery drive is completely full and I wanted to see if there is a way I can remove it off of my recovery drive. The one on my C drive is working great. I do know a little bit about computers. I looked over several forums online but nothing seems to be in just plain "cornbread english" for me to understand fully. Can anyone please help me....

Thanks,
Amanda

When you reinstalled Win 7, did you do it from a DVD? If that is the case, there should not be anything on the recovery drive that you would need. Let me know how you reinstalled Win 7 and what is on the D drive.

Hi there.

I am looking to move my 1TB of data (documents+games+movies+programs) to a 2TB harddrive (brand new harddrive). So what I want to do is to install a fresh Windows 7 onto the 2TB, and then I want to clone and copy over the 1TB harddrive's data to the 2TB harddrive, so that all of my games (with their saves) and programs will work on the 2TB harddrive.

And the obvious reason why I don't want to copy or clone the OLD windows 7 install from the 1TB is because it's full of bugs and errors, and is like 6 years old (I regularly get "rpc server is unavailable" errors and sometimes BSODs). So I want a fresh harddrive with a fresh windows 7 install, but I want all of my old data + games copied over exactly as they are. How would I go about doing this>? I do have a program called "Macrium Reflect" which will do the cloning (or I could use the Windows Transver feature maybe?).

PS. The computer will be the same ie. no new hardware will be added, I'll only be slotting in a bigger harddrive, so there won't be any hardware changes or anything of that sort. I'm an IT-tech of 3years (even though I've never done this), so don't worry about using any IT jargon, I'll understand what you're saying.

Computer setup is: Windows 7 Pro, 64bit, service pack 1.

So, is this achievable?

A:Clone old drive, to new drive that already has Windows 7 installed?

- First of all: disconnect your actual disk from the MB. This is very important to make sure your boot loader will be on the new disk.
Do a fresh install Clean Install Windows 7
When creating a user, select Test.
After installation finish, install all drivers and win 7 updates.
To save time with the updates: MS releases SP2 for Windows 7
Reboot.
Install all your programs (Office, games etc)
Under user = Test create a new user with the same name you have on your old computer (Plank?).
Log off Test and log in as Plank. Windows will create a Plank user.
Shut down.
Attach the old disk. Make sure you boot on the new disk.
Log in as Test

Now the trick.
Under user = Test rename the new \users\Plank to \users\Plank_New
Copy from the old disk your folder \users\Plank to the new \users
Shut down and remove the old drive
Boot and log in as Plank. You should have all your user settings on the new installation.

With this trick, you moved all the old registers for Plank to the new disk

I am Arun Kumar Kushwaha and I have discovered one Big Loophole/Security Leak in Microsoft's Windows 7 Operating System worldwide.
through which we can Access/Delete/Copy/Replace Important Data without Cracking/Resetting the Login Password in Windows 7 OS
and for this we not need any 3rd party Software/ CD/ DVD/ Pen drive/ CMD/ Script/ or any other means of hacking Devices/tool.

only through Windows 7 OS we can Access anybodies Computer Around the world, and user will never get to know that his/her computer has accessed by someone else.
This is purely Microsoft's Negligence towards user's Around the world.

U can assume how much serious is this Issue, if anybody can steal confidential Important data of Company/ Govt data/ or any other Sensitive Personal data of anyone who are using windows 7 OS.

I have Talked through telephone to MS India regarding this Issue and they told me that there is no loophole in their OS and can't be accessed by anyone without having Login Password or User need to Reset login Password with tool/software available.

also i have mailed to MS Technical support Team and also asked about this issue on Windows worldwide official support forum, but not get any meaning full response from them.

I am asking this message to here, coz i want to Spread this issue around the world, so every user can secure their Data and also MS can rectify this issue by releasing an OS Update.

Thanks for reading ..

Problem(s) - redirects in IE, locked windows logins, locked windows backgrounds - I assume this is all related.

History of actions to date:

Smitfraudfix appears to have corrected the ?RENOS? Trojan I had as I no longer get the pop ups and the background indicating I?m infected.

File ?WinHelpr.exe? was identified as having or being ? FAKEINIT Trojan. I renamed that file and Windows defender quarantined it.

What it is doing now that I decided to stop going it alone:

Safemode does not work - it shuts the PC down immediately.

Only one of the 4 logins works- 3 of them immediately log off.

For the 1 login that works I get to a point where the background picture is there - but no desktop icons or Taskbar at the bottom of the screen. CTRL_ALT_DEL does bring up Task Manger ? where I can force explorer to run via the ?FILE ? NEW TASK? pull down. Then the desktop icons and taskbar comes back. (Something had locked out TASK Manager before and SmitFraudfix corrected that)

I installed Malwarebytes ? had to rename it to winlogon to get it to actually run though.

SuperAntispyware.exe will not install ? I get an ?has encountered a problem and needs to close error?

Malwarebytes is currently running as I type this ? It?s been 14 minutes and only at 50000 files and it's found 9 objects. It?ll be a while before it is done.

Besides letting Malwarebytes do it?s thing and gettign it's log file ? what should I report back next with?

A:redirects in IE, locked windows logins, locked windows backgrounds

Hello jjkeane3rd and to BleepingComputer

For now, just post the Malwarebytes log. Once we've got that we'll work from there.

I followed a Webtutorial to Install Windows 7 on a Laptop that had been purchased with Windows 8 preinstalled. Making it a Dual Boot System. How to Dual Boot Pre installed Windows 8 with Windows 7

I created my Partition exactly as the Instructions Suggest. Yet when i boot from the USB disk , with the iso after starting to install windows 7 it asks what disk do you want it on. But then it says can not install windows on GPT Disk... partition.

I have read further solutions that say to convert the Disk to MBR with a third party software that doesnt loose data.... but that is statrting to make me nervous that later windows 8 will be corrupted and not operate. I wanted a Dual Boot system without Loosing windows 8. (if i converted the disk to mbr , would windows 8 still run or might fail because now it is an MBR disk?instead of gpt)

How could the Authour at Startpage not have included the necessary Tips to getting the Partition to accept windows 7 iso? This laptop of mine was a Lenova that had to have The bios set to Legacy instead of UEFI to even see the USB boot Drive. I dont know if that is a problem.here..

A:Windows can not be installed to GPT Drive

I don't dual-boot [use rehabbed computers], all I can offer is that what I see as a possible issue is that both versions of Windows have to be installed the same way, according to what the BIOS is set for. You see, the information in the BIOS sets up the computer/devices and the OS/Operating System reads the BIOS to know what it has to work with and the BIOS probably would have to be changed at each bootup to accommodate the desired version.

One of the changes with Win8/8.1 OEM version is the licensing code is not directly available to the user like the Retail version which comes with a sticker/label with the code [at least my Custom Desktop did]. Both of my Win8.1 Notebooks, my wife's Notebook and my Tablet have no such sticker.

Hello,

my computer has been dead for the last few days so to speak. For two days ago I turned on my computer - it started up just like any other day. I saw the Desktop and bang, blue screen of death. This has not happened since I installed Windows on my new SSD Harddisk (I'm running with two disks, one SSD for Windows and a HDD for everything else), so I simply started my computer again. (My computer worked just fine last weekend, no problems at all. I had a Windows Update and then this happened..).

During the set-up it stopped after the Motherboard-image - I had to chose between starting Windows Normal or repair it. Starting Windows normally does not help - it just give me BSOD right before or right after hitting the desktop. (Sometimes even before the Welcome-screen). So choosing to repair Windows during the setup is the only thing I can do.

By doing so, Windows searches for errors. I get the following error codes:
0x0
0x490
..and some with 6 f's.

(Today and yesterday I only got 0x0, which apparently stands for 'unknown').

Hitting F8 during setup and loading Windows in safe-mode (/secure mode?) does not help either, I get BSOD here as well.

I have tried to change the boot location (different disks and from CD). As a standard, its booting from my harddisk - all though it's booting from the wrong disk (the HDD). When I'm choosing the SSD I can't get any further and I get the message: "Missing Bootmgr..".

The only way to boot the computer correc... Read more
