Connection problem, possible network problem?

Q: Connection problem, possible network problem?

I cannot connect to Diablo 2. My internet is working just fine, and i run on cable. It says i should try to connect to my internet service provider to log on, and even though im using cable i gave it a try...still nothin. I shutdown my firewall for a second to see if it didnt like diablo for some reason...still nothing. I have run out of ideas...plz help.

I know that World of Warcraft and Warcraft 3 work just fine, both are made by the same company as Diablo 2. (the connection gets stuck at connecting to fastest server phase)

Preferred Solution: Connection problem, possible network problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Greetings folks,

This is my first post , so Hi to all.

I got a network/connection problem.I formatted my pc today because when i turned it on , it gave the windows screen and then it said that it can;t access the " SYSTEM " folder , so i formatted it since it's been a while since i've done that ( like a year and a half ).After that , I tried connecting to the internet by inserting the ip address numbers and the DNS ( I use cable connection ) , it didnt work , then i tried chanding the network card number , it worked , for like 30 minutes but then it stoped , it said " network cable is not plugged " or something like that , but then it plugged ( i dont know how ),but no internet connection ... so i went to check for the network cards and there was like 2 or 3 of them ( NIC i guess it was written ), i tried uninstalling them , but it didnt work , so i disabled them , but still , there was no internet connection. I tried ipconfig/all / renew /etc... but still , NO PROGRESS. So if you may PLEASE help me in this , cuz im supposed to give my final thesis at the university at the end of this month . Thanks in advance

Oh and also , stuff like Local Area Connection , 2 , 3 , 4 ,5 ,6 , 7 started appearing :S

Are you getting any 'link light' on the card you plug the cable into? Usually a little green light or Amber I think it is on Dell. If you are not I suggest trying a different cable from your modem to your PC.

Also, is your PC directly connected to the modem or into a router?

And when setting your IP address are you going to Start --> Control Panel --> Network Connections?

recently i installed windows 7 ultimate. it is working fine with me. but the only problem i am facing is network connection.
i have inbuilt network card in my motherboard g33fb (intel original)
i have broadband connection through a modem.
1. if i keep modem switched off at start up, i am unable to connect to internet even after switching the modem on.

2. i have to open network sharing centre and disable then anable the network adapter. only then i get connected to the network

3. even if the modem is switched on at startup, many of the times it is unable to connect to the network.

4. again i have to follow the step 2.

Now is this a problem specific to me or it is windows 7 problem.

It is not a general Windows problem. My first guess is that the NIC is having trouble negotiating a speed with the modem. In Device Manager right click on the ethernet adapter - Properties - Advanced tab - try some different values for the "Speed & Duplex" property starting with 100 Mbps full duplex and 10 Mbps full duplex.

Also possibly a non-Windows firewall or security suite being naughty.

Try these repairs ...

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista or 7.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

I have a Inspiron 350 and the Router is NETGEAR G-Wireless WGR61v10.

My problem is since I had a reformat on the computer. It would not connect to the internet in fact it said Local or limited connection before I changed the channel where now lets me go on Google and surf is very limited and very slow.

I can't log into my programs like MSN and Skype and only logs in when I restart the computer and drops the connection again. I would like to know how to unblock the connection so I can do everything again.

I am just really frustrated and would like to know if there is a solution to get the net up and running again.

Thank you very much for taking the time to view this.

Oh yeah, I would like to add, Update, MSN and Skype do not even read as connected. They don't even stay connected long either. Updating antivirus is hard when it does not see my computer having net always brings me to troubleshoot and has not helped.

I have a problem connecting to the network with my tethered desktop. Here is the setup:

ATT DSL300 > Modem > Netgear router
Desktop tethered to router with ethernet cable
2 laptops and 1 tablet running on WiFi

The laptops and the tablet connect instantly. But the desktop often needs appr. 2 minutes to connect and sometimes it comes back with "No IP address". I have tried static and dynamic IP address settings in the router - same result.

Often I need to reboot to get any connection at all. What good is a 15 second boot time if you have to wait forever for the connection.

I am not very good at networking questions. So any useful advice would be welcome.

A:Problem with network connection

I can't really help Wolfgang but a couple of thoughts for you, have you tried a different Ethernet cable also have you tried a different port on the router with the cable. I was thinking maybe one or the other may be going flaky.

Those are my thoughts, don't know if they're any good or not.

Yeah, I have a new problem. My wireless PC says its connected to the wireless network at 54 Mbps and says there is an excellent connection, but it won't connect to the internet at all. The internet connection had been fine, but now it's completely gone. I didn't change any settings or anything, and the wireless seems to be connected to the router fine, just like it always has been, but now it's messed up. It has sometimes gone down like this for a half hour or so for some reason, but it always comes back. However it's been down all day today. Im not sure of the problem. The wired PC's connection is fine.

Also, its not a firewall problem and both firewalls are enabled on both PCs. Everything seems to be connecting to the router properly, so I'm not sure why it might be doing this.

Next,, I try to repair "1394 Connection", but it says it cannot because TCP/IP is not enabled. I'm not sure if or where I ever enabled this since I havent changed any settings since the internet was working before.

Lastly, in IP config in command prompt, it says under Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection "Media State...Media Disconnected". Im not sure if its been like this, but could this be part of the problem? I woudn't think so this is a wireless PC. Thanks for any help.

right just added a 2nd pc to my router.

its going in via the ethernet connection on the router and on the pc,mine is connected via usb.

when trying to use a 10m cat5e cable there is no network connection ie. NETWORK CABLE UNPLUGGED in the taskbar, the cable is definetly connected in the appropriate way. this was doing my head in last night because i was certain it was the cable, but it is just out the packet and unused.

anyway decided to take the other pc into my room and connected with the 3m cat5e cable that came with the router to see if thas worked, and guess what, connected no problem.

so my question is: Is a 10m cable to long for an adsl router(i wouldnt think so)or is it a dodgy cable???

bob )

A:network connection problem....

i suspect a dodgy cable -
so you have everything connected up with the 3M cable - and just replace the 3m cable with the 10M and it does not work - everything else the same - correct?
if so its the cable....

I had to do a fresh install. Prior to this installation, whenever I booted my computer, my broadband connection was active automatically. Now I have to activate the connection manually (by either clicking the icon on my desktop or putting it into my start folder). As a consequence, I can't install my wireless router because the connection becomes disconnected during the process. I hope this all makes sense to you because when I read it, I get confused.

Ok, this is going to be pretty vague to start out, but I'm afraid I don't have much information to go on at the moment, and I don't have the first clue where to go from here. I'll just tell the story of what happened and what I have tried so far, and hopefully someone can point me to something else I can try.

We have four computers networked in our house. One computer--one of my housemates'--is connected to the cable modem and we all connect to the internet through his, via the network.

As of last night, my fiancee's computer was connecting to the network and the internet just fine. Today she came home from work, got on her computer, tried to open IE and it wouldn't connect. As she was restarting her computer to see if that would fix the problem, I noticed that my housemate's computer was shut down. Since we connect to the internet through his computer, we can't if his is shut down. So I started it up while my fiancee's computer was finishing restarting. She tried IE again, and it still wouldn't connect. We shut down and restarted her computer once more, and still nothing.

I thought it might be her network connection, but the lights on the hub were showing conectivity and activity, and I checked the physical cable connections and they were fine. Just to test, I opened up her "my network places" and tried opening a folder on my computer. I got a message saying it was not accessible. I tried a second one o... Read more

Hey Guys,

Have this problem with my home network, i've hooked up 3 computers using a befsr41 linksys router. laptop using xp home, new pc using xp pro and older pc using win2000. I have run the setup wizard on all comps, activated file and printer sharing, and shut off windows firewalls.

All file and printer sharing work fine except for the connection with the new PC and the laptop. When checking for local network computers on the laptop the newPC is no where to be found, and vice versa. This is boggling to me because all connections to the older PC are fine, can send and recieve to both other machines.

I've tried resetting the home networking and rebooting all machines afterward and installed drives and firmware for the router.

any help would be greatly appreciated

I am running XP Pro Service Pack 2, IE6 and Firefoz 3.6.2

I noticed a problem when I performed a Yahoo (or Google) search using Firefox or IE6. When clicking on a link from a Yahoo or Google search page, both browsers redirected me to a “spammish looking” page that I did not request. When I clicked on the same search page result a second time, the page I requested opened with no problem.

I figured I caught a piece of malware so I attempted to enter this website, http://www.safer-networking.org, so I could download SpyBot Search & Destroy. Additionally, I attempted to enter this website http://www.malwarebytes.org.

When I clicked on either link using a direct Internet connection, both Firefox and IE6, repeatedly reported that the server could not be found. This seems real odd because outside of the redirection problem already mentioned, I have not encountered a problem visiting other websites.

It didn’t make sense that both of these popular sites were down, so just for the heck of it I engaged a http proxy and each website opened in both browsers with no problem.

With the http proxy engaged, I was able to download both program files. Yet, after installing the two malware detection programs I was NOT able to update either using a direct Internet connection. Only after engaging a http proxy, and bypassing the direct Internet connection, was I able to download the updates.

I’ve spent a good amount of time searching for a ... Read more

I have a two station network successfully linked. On three occasions on each computer using win98SE as well as win2k I have tried to establish a dual boot setup using Partition Magic. The first time both partitions were win98SE on the client machine. The other two times on the server running a mixed setup Win2K and Win98SE.
The net works fine on the first partition on which the operating system was loaded. On the second the system recognises and installs the network card and system settings as normal, which I have configured to the same settings as the first partition ie computer name, workgroup, IP address etc. But the two computers will not communicate.
Is this a problem with Partition Magic partitions, or is it just not possible?

Hi, I'm having problems connecting to any network on my desktop PC

It seemed to be working fine last night but this morning it won't access any web pages and i can't get to the page either. I've tried running the troubleshooter which doesn't fix the problem, but at the end says it's because the '"Local Area Conection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration'. I've tried connnecting it to 2 different routers with different internet connections, which doesn't change the problem. I've tried installing a PCI wireless adaptor that i had lying around, and although the adaptor seems to work (detects wireless networks and conects to them with the right passcode) it has the exact same problem. I've tried to do a system restore but it goes to a blue screen pretty much as soon as it starts and doesn't finish.

I bought the computer second hand from ebay about a month and a half ago, although i think it's fairly new and was assembled from parts by a professional company, I installed windows myself as it came only with ubuntu and the windows is OEM version. The only thing i've noticed wrong with it is that every other time i turn the computer on it does a dskchk, and the only thing i can think of that's happened to it is that the weather's been really hot lately and the room it's in is like a sauna, but the CPU temperature doesn't seem particularly extreme.

You aren't getting anything from the router of modem here according to your ipconfig.

I would uninstall MacAfee then save the IP-reset file below, unzip and run the file, let it run till your machine reboots. This file will fix winsock, renew your IP, flush the DNS and reset the TCP/IP stack.

You might also try running the sfc/scannow command which should fix or replace any missing files.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

You should be able to turn off the disk check.

I have not heard of any registry change to circumvent the limit, and even if we knew of one we could not help with that kind of activity--as the forum rules make very clear.

Hi All,

I wonder if anyone can help.
I have a Toshiba laptop running Vista Business. Last week I had to reinstalled Windows (using the toshiba recovery CD that came with my laptop). Previous to this I had no problems with the network connections.
Following the reinstallation when I intially wanted to use the internet, my laptop found my wireless sky broadband connection and asked for the password - this was fine. I selected the options to save this password and to connect automatically. If I leave my computer on and come in and out of Internet Explorer there are no problems. However if I turn my laptop off then on restart I have to add the wireless password again. Even though the 'save' settings have previously been set.
There is not a problem with my wirelss set up as my partner can use his laptop fine, and mine used to work!

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Since Vista is a high-security system, this might be the fault of a password remembering general setting that is overriding the wireless save password function. Perhaps set the permissions there?

Hey there, I'm having a huge problem trying to get my DSL to connect to the net. I'm running Win XP Pro with an on-board networkcard, MoBo drivers are completely up-to-date, and my NIC drivers are up-to-date as well.
The DSL modem I'm using is an Effecient networks Speedstream 5200 connected through Ethernet.
I just reformatted my computer yesterday and re-installed XP as well and the days before the reformat the modem was working perfectly with no problems.

I've spent the last 10-12 hours on the phone with various broadband support techs from Bell Sympatico (ISP provider and modem supplier) and even the senior techs couldn't figure out why my modem won't connect to the net.

There's one part I'm confused about in my network adapters and that is I have two of them. 1394 Net Adapter and 3COM Gigabit LOM(3C940). Both are enabled in my network connections but for some reasons the 1394 net adapter says that "TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection. Cannot proceed." Which seems strange to me. The 1394 net adapter's connection is "1394 connection" and the 3COM is under Local Area connection. 3COM was installed from my MoBo support CD.

Well, I hope this was coherent for someone to help me and if someone could I would be eternally greatful. Thanks.

Getting these error messages:

I have checked the UTP cable, it seems OK.
I have tried a new network card. It worked for a few days and then quit again.
I have checked the Computer ID and workgroup names.
All protocols seem to be in order.
I even tried the hard drive in another computer thinking I had a hardware problem. This did not work either.

I can access the internet , but not the intranet.
Other computer on network do not "see" the problem one.

Any help or suggestions?

I've recently started losing the connection to my wireless network at home. I'm definitely not going out of signal range, being about 2m from the router and also other laptops in the area aren't losing the connection.

I disconnect, and then, unless i restart the computer, it can't find any networks and i can't reconnect.

This is a very recent problem, have had the current set up for almost a year and never had a problem.

The only changes i can think of that i've done recently, are that i reformatted a USB external hardrive (bit random, unlikely to be the problem) and also started using TVersity to stream films from my computer to my PS3.

There doesn't seem to be anything sepecific that i'm doing when i lose my connection.

Any ideas? Can post system info if needed.

I have a Linksys E3000 wireless router with 3 computers on my home network.
1. Laptop running Windows 7 - wirelessly
2. Desktop running Windows XP Pro - with Linksys Wireless Adapter
3. Desktop running Windows XP Pro - wired to router.

I have a HDD attached to the NAS USB port on the router. I can access it with the first two computers, but the one which is wired to the router will not access the network storage. Keeps asking for a username/password, and anything I put in doesn't work. Seems like it would be a simple thing to connect that computer to the Network Storage, but, alas! no workeee!

This is from the E3000 user manual for your router

I have two network connections in my computer, one built in my motherboard and a pci network card. I had them set up working as a bridge connection with another pc, which was working fine until i turned my computer off yesterday. When I booted it up again, the bridge connection wasnt working, and i could not access the internet on either computer. I deleted the bridged connection, reinstalled the network card and its drivers, and ran virus and spyware scans. I ran a network diagnostic test and everything failed. The network cards are functional. When i unplug the network cables it gives the "cable disconnected" message. Ive tried ipconfig but when i do this the command prompt opens and then closes automatically. Ive done repair connection, which runs and works but has no apparent affect.

Any help or suggestions would be great.

I was forced to reinstall Windows today on my desktop. I am on my laptop now sitting next to my desktop. On the desktop I get no connection to the network and obviously it is working because I am sending you this. I tried going to the Network and Sharing but it just says there is no connection. Before I had to put in my Network Name and Key. I can't even find a place for that now. Could you give me some ideas on what I might have missed. I haven't had this problem before. Thanks,

I tried using my internet this morning and when i opened up the mozilla firefox browser it didnt connect to the server, i then tried with internet explorer the same thing happened. I am connected locally and to the internet, it just doesnt seem the load the server when i use the internet.

I did leave my pc and internet on over last night as i was downloading, im not sure whether this may have caused the problem!

One thing that is strange is that i play some multiplayer online games which i have a client for (this also will ont let me connect) but i use a talking system when playing called teamspeak and i can connect to that! dont know why though!

I tried swapping my ethernet connection to another computer in the house and it works perfectly, which leads me to think something is wrong with my laptop. I then tried a system restore that failed! so i opted to scan the whole computer, whilst doing this i tried openning up firefox again and a message popped up from AVG say "Threat Detected" so im assuming that i have some kind of virus which is blocking my path to the internet!

Anybody got any other ideas or help on what i can do? As i said i am currently running a AVG whole computer scan.

My laptop, all of a sudden, will not connect with any other computer within it's workgroup. This is new behavior. It has always been able to do so.

In fact, when I go to "Network", when I click on any of the computers in the workgroup, I get an error message ... see the attached photo. I even get the error message when I try to open the shared file on the laptop which is named "Acerlaptop".

If I go to the other computers in the workgroup, I can actually open the shared files on Acerlaptop.

Going to the "Network and Sharing Center", I find that the connected network is "Private", Network Sharing is "On", File Sharing is "On", Public File Sharing is "On" and marked so that "anyone with network access can change and create files." Password Protected Sharing is "Off".

I can ping the other computers from the laptop.

A:Solved: Network Connection Problem

Well, this wasn't the solution I was looking for, but I decided to try a "System Restore" and it has worked.

But I found my firewall turned off (which I immediately turned back on) and, another surprise, now "Network Discovery" is marked as "Custom". I'm not sure what that means.

If the computer continues to cause me problems. next week it will get a complete reformat ... but that is undecided for now.

Good Afternoon,

I am running a home network and the computer in question is Win7-32 bit Dell desktop connected to the netword via CAT-5 cable. Other wireless computers reside on the network, too.

For the past several days, it has been dropping its connection to the Internet, sometimes spontaneously and always on reboot. When I go to the Network & Settings page after the connection drop, I see (attached) two networks. My network and a public network, so "multiple networks" appears on the network map.

To regain my connection to the Internet, I have to go to "Adapter Settings," disable the LAN connection and then re-enable it. That gets me back to the Internet, but doing this several times a day is no fun.

I tried drect connecting my cable modem to the computer, avoiding the router, and all that appeared was a Public Network I could not seem to connect to.

Can anyone offer some insights as to what is going on with my computer and how I can resolve it? The only changes to the system in the past week were the MS updates installed automatically.

Help is appreciated.

Hi DougR,

Try to do a Power Cycle.
How to Power Cycle (Restart) your Internet Modem & Router

I'd highly recommend a firmware update of your router if you have not done it yet. You may obtain/download from the manufacturer's site. To install the new firmware, use a wired connection.

I have router sending out a wireless signal. It's working fine. But the one physical cable I have plugged into it isn't working.

It's been working for months and I just restarted my computer (it was working before the restart) and now it isn;t.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for it on the computer. They seem fine.

The cable has been under a chair and pinched a bit but it was just working fine. It's a long cable.,

I tried switching the ports it was in. That did nothing.

It just says "limited or no connection" and cant access the other computers on the network, so there's no network connectivity.

I'm about to try restarting the router, but I'm not hopeful for that. So should I run a new cable or could it be anything else?

I've never heard of it going from working to not working so instantly. I just don't get it.

Hello All,
I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad T410 with Windows 7 Professional on 64bit as OS like a week ago. I set up the wireless connection to my home network and it was working fine till last night... This morning I had a problem connecting to the same wireless network.. It found the network but unable to connect .... I tried to delete the existing networks through Network Sharing Center --> Manage Wireless Networks and added our home network again..It says "Wireless network connection has invalid IP Address".. and not working... But my roommate's laptop with XP as OS is connecting to our home network and working...

Please help me how to fix this issue.

A:Problem with Wireless network Connection

It might be helpful to reset the TCP-IP stack which sometimes can fix this problem.
At the command prompt, copy and paste (or type) the following command and then press ENTER:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
Note If you do not want to specify a directory path for the log file, use the following command: netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
Reboot the computer.

Hello all,
i have a strange problem with my network adapter. Every time Windows is booted up, i see a yellow triangle in the taskbar, with the message it's connected to an "unidentified network". I thought it was my computer, so i looked at another computer. This PC didn't have the problem. When this problem drove me mad, i decided it must have been Windows 7, so i wiped it, and reinstalled it. After a few reboots, the problem just was there again. This is what I've done so far:
Checked network cables
Updated all drivers
Replaced the router
Re-installed Windows 7
Searched for the solution.
My configuration is:
Asus P5B Premium mainboard (2 NIC's, 1 disabled in BIOS)
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Eminent EM4450 Router
Any help is very much appreciated.

A:Weird network connection problem.

Does the problem go away after a few minutes, after you reboot? Do you have internet access regardless of the warning sysmbol? If so, I wouldn't worry to much about it.

By any chance, do you have any sidebar gadgets that access the internet? I had a similar situation. I had a weather gadget and it seemed to slow down the connection to the internet. After a few minutes, I would connect to the internet w/o any issues.

I have a network of computers already running and networked through different platforms (e.g. Win98SE, Win2000, WinXP). They all use 3com Ethernet cards using 10/100 coax network cabling.

I have a new Laptop with win7 preinstalled.

The problem is, I cannot get the laptop to communicate with any of the other computers. It will not Ping nor tracert from Win7 to the others and I cannot get any of the others to ping nor tracert to the laptop (they do ping each other OK on the existing network).
I have used two connection cable methods, each in turn:
1. A Hub (Netgear dual speed hub) with Cat5 and
2. Peer to Peer with "X over twisted pair" Cat5.

Using a Netgear Hub I have used Cat.5 cable from the Laptop to the hub and Cat 5 from the hub to each of the other computers' 3com card's Cat5 socket. Leaving the existing 10/100 network cable in place.
I have also tried plugging the cable into the dedicated network Cat5 socket already on the Motherboard of each computer (that is each in turn not all of the computers at the same time).

However I have also used the hub to connect to three of the computers at the same time via Cat5 (whilst leaving the existing network connections in place) and to the laptop.

I have also tried using a dedicated twisted pair "X over" Cat5 cable from the laptop to one of the other computers (peer to peer) and tried that, with each of three of the computers, trying both the 3Com card socket and the dedicated Motherboard soc... Read more
