SSD Performance reduced after BIOS update.

Q: SSD Performance reduced after BIOS update.

Hello,

Week ago I bought new SSD drive. (OCZ Agility 3, 2.15 firmware)
I made fresh install of OS, newest drivers etc.
SSD and my system was working very well but I was disapointed to my SSD-benchmark results. Well I tried to increase performance by updating my motherboard bios. Bios update succeed but it didnt really increase performance of my ssd, new bios reduced writing performance notable. (MOBO = Asus m4a87td/usb, bios v.2001) AHCI is on.

What with that 103424? Shouldnt it be 1024? Previous score over 400 points, now just 300. (disappeared in picture)

Also noticed another problem. I can't boot my comp if I have external drive plugged in.
I just can't change my 1st device boot to agility drive in bios because it's not in the list of boot devices. Well I unplug external drive and its working. Also thought that bios update would fix it but it didnt.

Preferred Solution: SSD Performance reduced after BIOS update.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: SSD Performance reduced after BIOS update.

Your numbers are lower than most, but I don't know if it would be noticed in real life as opposed to a benchmark.

I think that 103424 is a reference to alignment. If it's evenly divisible by 4, it should be OK--and it is.

Not sure about the BIOS/external drive issue. Was the external connected when you did the clean install to the SSD?

One way or another, I'd make sure all boot files were on the SSD and that it appeared in the BIOS and was bootable, regardless of whether the external was plugged in.

Hello guys. Recently I've bought I PowerColor ATI HD 6790 1 GB DDR5 video card. My old one was the 4670 version, though it was from Gigabyte. And oddly enough, my performance seems to have been reduced.

This is my current setup

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+
PowerColor Ati HD 6790 1GB DDR5
ECS GF8100VM-M5
Lc-Power LC 420H-12
Western Digital 500gb Sata2 7200 Rpm 32mb Buffer
3,00 GB RAM
TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203B ATA

What could be causing this and what would be the solution?

Thank you

I've had a lot of reduced performance with my system lately, in addition to a lot of windows error messages for some reason. I just un-installed a handful of anti-spyware/malware apps because I had way too many.
Now I'm left with HJT, MalwareBytes (w/ active protection), TuneUp2009, ZoneAlarm, & Spyware Blaster
Is this sufficient protection?
Applications load up much slower and the start is lagged.
Otherwise I haven't had too many issues, a couple crashes few and far between.
Any ideas?

Cry Performance reduced after reinstalling WinXP pro

I have just reinstalled my system (XP Pro) and updated it online to SP2. Authenticated updated and all. I haven't changed any hardware and in fact I reinstalled less software than before.
Since reinstallation and updating, I've noticed considerable deterioration on system performance, reflected e.g. on scroll speed (eg in Firefox and in Word & Excel. For firefox I've checked "smooth scrolling" it's off. Especially Word used to be up to 1page/sec while scrolling with arrow keys, now is down to 5-6 sec/page. Also: normally Word shows the page numbers (lower left corner) changing as you scroll - not anymore in my case. Page numbers remain change only after scrolling stops. Other example is when I move windows on the screen, movement is not spooth but rather jerky.
Any ideas?
My 2.66GHz machine is clean according to avast antivirus, spybot, adaware & adwatch, Netscape's own spyware scanner. Reg mechanic finds no problems. HD (40GB) is error free and cleaned-up and defragmented. Smooth scrolling options are off.
Thanks to anyone who could help.

Help with MS Office is another forum, so I can't hep you with Word settings.
As far as your general slowness issue: If it's slower now than it was before the re-install, then you did something different this time than you did previously. Try and think what that might be. I could sit here and guess all week and we might never stumble across it, there's just too many things that could affect performance.

It takes about ~4 mintues to boot this laptop, inexplicable CPU usage. Though the usage isn't consistently bad. Today I experienced such taxed resource usage, that simply moving the cursor across the screen had a choppy latent effect. I'd move the cursor, and about 1-2 seconds later, it would move it's position on the screen. I have ran Ad-aware, and Spybot, and they removed only tracking cookies. Trendmicro housecall came up with nothing. Here is the HJT log:

Today I've noticed a significant reduction in my computers performance. I installed a fresh copy of spy sweeper and it came up with 2 pieces of malware

Mal/Generic A
Mal/Keygen C

unfortunately it keeps jamming up so it wont erase them. Any help scanning the system would be much appreciated.

Windows 7 Home Edition, standard HP desktop.

Btw I did install a video card upgrade today, dont know if that could have potentially effected things, but it has been runnning worse since.. went from 256mb integrated to 1gig ATI Sapphire HD4670..

Thanks,

I am reasonably computer-literate, at least to the point of maintaining an efficient and virus free computer to operate at top performance. Inexplicably, my gaming performance on applications which normally achieve steady frames in the 40's and 50's range are completely stuttering around 2-3. My computer is very well maintained, with a commit charge of 123, regularly defragged, registry cleaned, scanned for viruses, etc. I thought that it might be a case of conflicting drivers, and as such updated all of them, with the exception of my BIOS (was going to try but am out of floppy disks). The only other thing that I can think of besides a BIOS conflict is that in the add/remove programs list is a Client Hack 1.9.2d that cannot be removed, nor is it recognized when I do deep scans with kaspersky or bitdefender. it seems unlikely to me that one virus is drastically reducing my gaming performance, its possible that a particular setting on my computer is wrong, but I checked everything I know (including BIOS AGP aperture settings, etc). Please, any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated, as this has been driving me mad as I've been trying to remedy this on my own for the past few days.

Hi,

This problem has me completely baffeled. I'm not even sure if this is the right forum to be posting in. (If you can suggest a forum better related to topic please do).

Recently I noticed my whole system being slower and more sluggish. Especially playing games. I checked my windows experience index and it had changed from 6.5 to 2.9.

The only scores in the list that have changed signifigantly are my cpu (now at 2.3) and my memory access(2.9).

This happend to me once before about 6 months ago. In the end I updated my dell bios from a10 to a11 and my score went up to 6.5 and my performance was percieveably improved.

Now I dont understand why (what seems like the same problem) has happened again.

I'd be very grateful if somebody could help me figure out why my system has suddenly slowed down so drastically.

Thanks,

dub

A:CPU and memory performance suddenly drastically reduced

Take a look at Task Manager when it is running slow. Look at processes to see what is taking up RAM and CPU cycles.

Does it boot as quickly as before?

I wouldn't expect a BIOS change to improve things.

Look at Resource Monitor to see how much RAM you are using at any particular time.

Have you done any tests of your RAM or hard drive to confirm they are OK?

How confident are you that you have no viruses or malware?

Hi

Yes, low free space on the C drive is a problem here. Experts recommends at lease 15% free space in the OS partition for proper system operation. Other than the free space issue, there might be additional problems in your system such as malwares, failing or old aging hard dive etc. Please try the below steps.

Transfer all the data that can be moved from C to D partition. Free up maximum space as you can.

Download and run TFC to clean all kind of temp files.

      http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tfc/

 Uninstall unused applications.

Open Control Panel --> Programs and uninstall all the software which you never used. They only help to eat hard drive space and slowing down Windows by adding unnecessary services.

To detect and uninstall bloatwares pre-loaded by laptop manufacturer, you can use the free program PC Decrapifier.

     http://pcdecrapifier.com/

Use Microsoft Security Essentials as the antivirus solution.

Most of the third party AV programs are huge resource hogs and known to slow down  systems. Microsoft's own AV program MSE requires very low system resources and works very well with Windows. I highly recommends uninstalling your current antivirus completely and use MSE instead.

In the last 1 week, I have noticed that my laptop is always heated and overheats even when I play any low graphic games .This I presumed was because of a battery/power issue which caused the laptop to lag/hang. Henceforth, I ran an energy diagnostic test on my system and came up with the follwing results (I will post them below this paragraph).

Anyone has a P4ITA2 motherboard? I had a serious problem here (For a gamer, it's serious.) After I update my BIOS to the lastest P4ITA2 revision, my RAM was underclocked from PC800 to PC600! It reduced my 3DMark score from 8089 to 7543! That's a serious drastic situation! My bandwidth dropped from 3.2gb/s/channel to 2.4gb/s/channel!!! Any remedy to it?

A:Performance Decrease after BIOS update?

Yeah... put it back to the way that it was.

I don't want to be preachy here but in my several years tenure as a computer technician and then as a systems administrator, I have broken many a thing by upgrading to the latest firmware / BIOS / etc... just because of the hell of it and not because that firmware or BIOS upgrade actually fixed any problem that I was having....

Typical example was a CD-RW drive from Yamaha that I bought a few years back. This was back when having a CD-RW drive was a really big deal, and this was a SCSI drive which was like K I C K A S S ! ! ! !

All was fine until I upgraded to the latest firmware and then all hell broke loose. At one stage the firmware actually got corrupted and the drive would do some really trippy things. For a long time I had to reapply the previous version of the firmware just to get the drive to write CDs and then still it would often refuse to properly read a CD that it had just written.

There was no reason to appy the firmware, I just did it to be cool. So be aware of these issues and don't do stuff like that unless you really have to.

I think you can probably roll back to the previous BIOS, your board's manufacturer's web site SHOULD have an archive of previous versions, or you can also try and see if they have an ftp server which will likely have it even if its not linked to on their web site.

So, I'm at school and I receive a text from my mother stating that she is receiving porn popups and that google results are sending her off to random pages. This isn't uncommon because no one in my family understands computers anymore than your average secretary (no offense, but let's be honest. lol)... That being said, I went over and ran a few scans as I normally do which tends to clean it up fairly well. I begin by running HiJackThis and looking through it's logs and then looking at the startup items...

During this processes, I noticed several suspicious files that definitely did not belong. I then made sure to update the definitions on the current AV installed (BitDefender) and ran a scan with it. Afterwards, I continued to run Malwarebytes AntiMalware and SuperAntiSpyware. All 3 of them came back with results of finding several trojans... After running those, cleaning with them, rebooting, ect.. The popups were gone and the system was operating much more smoothly...

I should also note that ComboFix results in a BSOD everytime.

While you may see ComboFix being used quite often, and possibly you have used the tool yourself without incident, the tool should not be run unsupervised (as stated in the Disclaimer that is first displayed by ComboFix when you run the tool)

Going forward, I highly recommend you heed such instructions. As explained in Post 2 of our pre-posting topic...

Quote:

Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix.

That being said, I'll need a log from another tool. Again, it's important you follow these instructions as given.

Please download aswMBR.exe and save it to your desktop.

Double click aswMBR.exe to start the tool. At this time, select No when prompted to download the Avast database.
Click Scan
Upon completion of the scan, click Save log and save it to your desktop, and post that log in your next reply for review. Note - do NOT attempt any Fix yet.

I recently updated my Inspiron 3451 bios from A00 to A05, and the update finished successfully, no errors or interruption during the update. But here is the problem, when the laptop was still in bios version A00, it load the windows quickly after i switched on the laptop, and after it updated to version A05, i have to stuck on the dell logo for about 8-10 seconds, waiting, without windows loading animation or any harddrive activity (from fn+h combination), but after that, the windows loading animation comes up and system start quickly.
i have tried everything, resetting the bios, updating the drivers and windows, and even reinstalling the windows, but still. It's truly annoying to wait for that long, although the laptop works well for daily use. Is there any workaround for this problem? i'm thinking about downgrading the bios to A00.

A couple of days ago my computer's BIOS updated. Since then the system has experienced periodic slowdown. The first time I noticed this (which might not be the first time it occurred,) I checked Task Manager and found that "HP Support Assistant" was taking around 50% of the cpu. However since then I have not seen any processes taking an abnormal amount of cpu, although the slowdown generally stops by the time Task Manager pops up. As an example, after physically typing the "Spectre x360" in the title of this post, it took about 10 seconds for the letters to actually appear. Things sped up later in the post, but there have been multiple waves of slowdown while writing this. I've owned this computer less than a week, and it is has already become crippled. I did notice this post , which discusses the "HP Support Assistant" taking up cpu on earlier models. Although I am not certain if HPSA is the culprit. HPSA does state that I am fully up-to-date. If I were to uninstall then reinstall it, should I use the link supplied in that thread or is that installer specific to the Envy rather than the Spectre x360? I did not experience any of these issues prior to the BIOS update. When typing "wmic bios get biosversion" into a command prompt, it states that my BIOS version is:{"HPQOEM - 1072009", "F.04", "American Megatrends - 5000C"} As part of the BIOS installation process, a backup was placed onto a usb stick. I recently updated my Dell m4800 to BIOS A8 with Windows 7 64. I had been using a collection of older power adapters from my previous Dell m4400 without any issues. After the update, wow. A huge performance hit if I do not have the 19.5 volt and 9.23 amp adapter connected.
The m4400 power adapter is 19.5 volt and 6.7 amp. Pretty close right? Not any more.
I do have it connected to a Dell docking station almost all the time. Just checked. They are both 6.7 amp.
Anyone know what changed in BIOS A8 and what the deal is with the performance? Looks like I need to request a new docking station, but I'm not sure IT will believe my story.

A:Slow Performance without proper Power Adapter after BIOS A8 update on M4800?

I'd like an explanation from Dell as well.
If I'm correct, the crippling started with A07. I have the i7-4900MQ CPU with "Max Qualified Speed" at 2.80 GHz (multiplier 28) and "Max Turbo Boost" speed at 3.79 GHz (x38 ratio). Independent of the BIOS version (A06, 07, 08 or 09), when on the 180W AC power adapter, the CPU runs at x36 ratio i.e 3.59GHz. Even without any processing load. The same goes for battery power, whatever the BIOS version, the CPU speed is at x 34 ratio i.e 3.39 GHz. Again, without any load. On battery power the CPU is at a higher speed than the "Max Qualified Speed" without any need for the Turbo Boost.
Now the problem arose with the version A07 and exists in all of the following versions. When you plug in an adapter which is less than 180W, I have several of the 130W ones, the CPU multiplier drops to 8 which is the absolute minimum and makes up 800MHz. Ridiculous! Right after you remove the power supply you get an immense 3.39 GHz, over 4 times the speed when on AC.
As I need to use the laptop on a dock which has the 130W power supply weekly, I've reverted to BIOS A06 first. The computer is unusable at 800 MHz, it's like going 15 years back in time. The most noticable feature of the newer BIOSes that I like is that they somehow optimize the fans and make them quieter.
Does anyone if there is a limit on how many times the BIOS chip can be flashed?
I'd like Dell to explain why they have made such a move. And ... Read more

Dear TSG & co.

I've been working on a huge doc in word (w/images)... Since it has grown (78 pages = 14'600kb), problems.

1) Track-changes was activated by default; seeing this as a potential source of problems, I deactivated in word. However, evertime I save and then open doc on another pc, the track changes reappear & doc is increased to 100+ pages of text & images. I believe this has blocked my pc (ASUS pro5di, windows 7, Office 2010) and corrupted or lost data.

Since starting with this doc, I realized that every time I create a new word doc, it opens as a very narrow page on the left side of the screen. It isn't the zoom: zoom was at 100% and when I increased it, I had to increase to over 200% to read any text.

Any ideas?

It's because these steps require a reboot (e.g. Step 6: Disable your CD Emulation Software - DeFogger will ask me to reboot the machine), and I have a bad feeling about the question if it is safe to reboot in my situation: I'm not sure if I have a type of malware which is ready to infect the BIOS - if it is so, then it could infect it much easier during the reboot process.- If there is a good way to find out what is the problem (and fix the BIOS threat part if it really is present) without rebooting / shutting down this PC, or at least without booting from this hard drive (which I feel is probably infected), then please tell me what should I do.- If you know a place / forum where I can get a specialized help for this (seemingly BIOS-malware related) situation, please tell me where I could go.- If there is no way to move forward, I'll go ahead and risk the reboot, and follow the other steps (steps 6 to 10) in the Preparation Guide, no problem.I kindly ask you to please read below the details of the problem as it occured to me, and the things I have tried so far.The PC is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core BE-2350 2.1GHz, Motherboard Biostar TA690G AM2 (with AWARD BIOS), 4GB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, and an ASUS EAH4870 card added a few years ago. It's with WinXP SP3, AVG Free 2012, (standard) Windows Firewall, and it's behind a router.I ... Anyway, He said that it didn't need a bios update, even the Samsung website said this computer needed a bios update. I posted this on hardware, firmware concerns, and they told me to post here, I was going to go to a site ,that had a download that checked drivers, I was told to stay away from this.

Recently I've upgraded the BIOS of my ThinkPad P70 from 2.10 to 2.11. After this upgrade the speed of my DDR4-SODIMM went down by 20% , from 2666 MHz downto 2133 MHz. The release notes mention something about fixing specific memory modules, but they sure broke mine! On a related subject, the P70 apparently does not support XMP2.0. The maximum speed support by my RAM is  is XMP-3002 @ 3000 MHz. The P70 only supports the JEDEC speed: #7 @ 2666 MHz with BIOS 2.10, now #5 @ 2133 MHz with BIOS 2.11. The P70 is supposed to be Lenovo's high-end machine, it needs support for up-to-date hardware. It really is a shame thatA) Lenovo does not support regular RAM (afer all, XMP is a common memory standard), andB) teh latest BIOS upgrade just cripples the machine by another 20%.

Like many others, my new i7-8550U, 16GB X1 carbon 6th gen is experiencing worse performace in bios 1.25 than in 1.23. I did some testing and with bios 1.25, after a while the power settles at around 13W and doesn't even reach the cpu temperature limit (75-85 deg C) so the clock speed is around 2.3-2.5 Ghz, and I get around 500 on cinebench. After rolling back to bios 1.23, the power turbo boosts PROPERLY to 29W and 22 W, and reaches the temp limits (around 97 deg C) . But actually reaches cpu speeds of 3.0-4.0 Ghz, and I get 650+ on cinebench.I was able to undervolt cpu/cache to -150 mV stable though, after which I get only a little bit cooler (avg 89), but cinebench score is 700+.red(bios 1.25), green(bios 1.23), blue(bios 1.23+ undervolt -150mV) running running 10 loops of cinebench r15 cinebench r15 scores  So please, Lenovo, I don't want to stay at bios 1.23 because of this. Please give us an option if some of us want to run cooler or get more performance. Or is there any other way to fix this in bios 1.25??

Hi all
It will mean a fresh CLEAN install of Windows I'm afraid but if you have decent SATA disks change the default setting in the BIOS from IDE to AHCI.

It really WILL improve system performance --one of my big bugbears on any discussion on performance is how the I/O subsytem (generally Disks) is forgotten - yet on most home computers the I/O subsystem is often the real cause of dreadful performance.

You'll have to do a windows CLEAN install as the system will BSOD if you just change the BIOS so you won't be able to run the installer from within Windows itself. (If you can you are very lucky).

It won't effect any Virtual machines you may have however (apart from improving disk performance).

Cheers
jimbo.

A:Change IDE to AHCI in BIOS - Much better performance

I went back and forth between AHCI being on and being off on my new box that I built in July. Honestly, with almost ever task I did and with any benchmarking tool, I didn't see any real performance gain with AHCI enabled.

Unfortuantely, with AHCI on, I do have about an 8 second delay on each boot as the storage controller initializes. And since I do boot daily, and it was costing me 8 seconds which I didn't pick back up elsewhere, I just run with AHCI disabled.

The same issue from BIOS 1.2.5 is happening with BIOS 1.2.6. After the update, the boot screen remain totally black (no Dell logo) and you cant enter in the BIOS interface (no video at all).
The workaround is to downgrade to BIOS version 1.2.3
The windows boots as usual, and maybe this is the reason that users havent noticed this issue.
The bios upgrade/downgrade is automated. No mouse clicks are needed. Just wait computer to boot and wait some minutes. After this (blind) downgrade (because there is no video), you will see the dell logo once again and everything works as usual.

Hello All,
3 days ago I applied the latest bios update to my 1-year old XPS15, running latest and fully patched 64 bit Windows 10 public release.
Since then
A) plugin a rather simple USB-3 hub into the system prevents the laptop from Booting into BIOS, or if manages to do that
B) plugin said USB-3 hub after full windows boot, freezes both USB ports devices.  The unfreeze can be overcame by unplugging the hub and then other device and then re-pluging both
C) after step B, windows explorer becomes very unstable and does not even show all the folder contents to some programs "open file" function.
D) the system does not recover anymore from plain S3 sleep, triggering a windows hard reboot.
I'm afraid the bios option to roll-back the bios version was not active, so I'm stuck.
Finally, the latest Intel diver published at the same time does not install cleanly after the bios update (although I managed to get it to show in the "program files" section.
I always apply the latest updates for drivers and bios promptly as main security policy and so far the system has behaved very well (Maybe with the exception of Hibernation from sleep time out, which always has been a bit faulty)
