Laptop won't start, LED is the only sign of life

Q: Laptop won't start, LED is the only sign of life

I recently bought a pretty old used Laptop (specifically, an ancient Toshiba Tecra 720CDT).
It didn't come with it's own DC adapter, so I ended up connecting wires from a stripped adapter onto the jack.
The only sign of life I got here was having the battery LED turn on (yellowish colour), only to turn off again a second later.
This only actually happened when I held down the on button.

I figured that it was simply trying to charge, but the wires couldn't be connected to the laptop long enough, so I took the thing apart and replaced the jack on the PSU to fit one of my many standard sized adapters.
Turning it on, I got the exact same thing.
The seller's telling me that it worked fine before he sent it to me.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm not an expert in dismantling or repairing laptops, but it's my guess that something got disconnected or damaged during the process.

Just in case you need it, here is the support site for the Toshiba Satellite P55W-B5112 15.6" Touchscreen Laptop.

Hey everyone,

My laptop (i'm not sure the make or model matters) suddenly died, it was working fine one minute, left the room for around 30 seconds, came back and has seemingly has no power. The machine has been running purely off the power adapter because there is no battery. There's no lights on, indicating an electrical connection; it's completely dead. I used a phase tester to confirm a good power adapter, so the problem seems to be with the computer. I don't think the electrical input socket (?) is at fault cos it's not loose.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe it has something to do with that internal coin-shaped battery?

I'd really appreciate any help because i'm completely at a loss as to what i should do next...

Thanks!

Could be a dry joint on power connector, underside motherboard try wiggling to see if you get some response, coin battery is only to retain CMOS information.

Hi

My PackBell Easynote E2 has had enough of my 13yr old daughters MSN , pics AND MUSIC from her phone and has given up on me!!

When I turn it on I get the PB screen then instead of loading Windows I get a menu for starting the system; either in XP Home Edition or Windows Recovery Console, if I do nothing it tries to load in XP and then all I get is a black screen with a black and white bar at the bottom! I can't even start in safe mode and none of the lights (where the CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK buttons are) are doing anything. IS MY BABY DEAD????

Tried to load in Recovery Console mode and then realised I didn't know the Administrator password. Did press F2 and got into Admin password bit and it asked me for new password but where it said old password looked very dim (a bit like me LOL) LIKE THERE WASN'T AN OLD PASSWORD!?!.

Can anyone tell me what has happened and also, even better; how to fix it.

Thanx

Kathy

A:PB EasyNote - No Sign of Life!!!

Have you just tried hitting enter when it asks you for the admin password?

Generally unless you've set one on a home PC, then there isn't one set.

If you can get in to rc like that, select the c:\windows option and when it prompts you 'c:\windows>' type chkdsk /p /r

Once its complete type exit and reboot. If that doesn't fix it post back.

not really sure where this goes, but i figured this would be the best place out of all the others

so last night (or rather this morning at 12.08am) i set my fujitsu t580 to sleep before i went to sleep myself.

this morning, i woke up to find that its power lights weren't on despite being plugged in to a charger (which is confirmed to be connected to a working power supply as the router connected to the same extension cable is still working) and it did not respond at all to me flicking the power switch

i've tried the ol' method of getting rid of residual static (disconnect all power sources, hold power button for a minute); doesn't work. my finger was on that switch the entire time my phone was loading the "new thread" page which is no small duration

i'm quite sure it's not the power supply; my battery still had a pretty fresh lifespan of 2hours (at least for a 2.5 year old battery) last i checked a month ago and i doubt that could've depleted overnight while the comp was asleep. can't test the charger though because stupid fujitsu made a charger with a plug that doesn't fit any of the other non fujitsu laptops around the house

a little background info of my lappy: got it about april 2011, been showing signs of some fan trouble since about june last year but i only bothered to clean the fan in sept this year after fan errors started popping up. since then, comp has shown no signs of trouble other than general signs of... My younger brother and I share a computer. It is Windows 10 Pro. I was letting him use it while i was asleep. All I know is that he was playing his video games. Anyways, he left the house to go hang out somewhere and i wake up to see that when i turn on the computer, only his account shows at the sign-in screen. Meanwhile, there are THREE accounts on this computer. My account, His account, and a local that my other siblings use sometimes. I restarted and even shut down my computer about 4 times. I waited until he came back and logged on his account to check what was wrong, and I see that my account is still there with all my files and docs. The other local account is there too. I log out to see if my User name is there but it isn't. I tried to see if my account was deactivated using these methods but none of them worked. I've looked on Microsoft's forums but all I found was how to activate the built-in administrator account. Please do your best to help!! I have important work to do on my account but i can't access it.

As if we didn't have evidence enough that these 3147 2-in-1's are total junk, mine is now totally unresponsive. Will not start, can't even get the led to light up. No amount of holding power buttons does anything whether it is plugged in or not. I am astonished at how bad these machines are. I have 2 and have had nothing but trouble from day one with both. The wifi quit on this one a few months ago and now it won't run at all. And, conveniently for Dell, the warranty expired 2 months ago. Fifth, and last Dell product I will ever buy.
Anyone have a similar experience? Suggestions?

Built a computer in August, it was running beautifully, but after some of my video card updates, it started giving me regular BSOD. I reinstalled windows, bought a new hard drive, reinstalled windows, and I still get BSOD.
I installed the newest BIOS from ASUS website which is right here

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download P8Z68-V LX

I installed under BIOS the P8Z68-V LX BIOS 4003. Was slightly less buggy, and has only done a BSOD once since.

I apologize because this is my first computer, I don't understand all of the information I need to post in order for it to be useful. I really would appreciate any help in figuring out what the problem is. I've been trying to fix it by searching for drivers, updates, on forums for info since November (when it started to crash very frequently)

I uploaded the SF_23-12-2012.zip which just happened at about noon today. Usually the computer freezes up when I am playing Hitman: Absolution, but almost never when I'm playing Prototype 2. After updating my BIOS, Hitman doesn't BSOD, but just freezes. I've also been able to run Civilization 5 just fine, but that's what I was playing when I got the BSOD today.

Thank you so much for your time. My system specs are on my profile, but I can post them here if any of you need me to.

A:BSOD playing Half Life 2, sometimes right after start-up

Usual causes: Device driver, memory, kernel
Follow these steps -

Test for any corrupted drivers, by running Driver Verifier for least 24 hours, stop the test if a BSOD occurs before this time frame. Driver Verifier will place stress on the drivers within your system, which will cause corrupted drivers to crash and hopefully be pinpointed.Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

Memory:RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Run Memtest86+ for least 7-8 passes, and preferably overnight as it can take a while to fully complete.

Test each RAM stick individually, if an error is found then move the same RAM stick into the next DIMM slot and test again, if errors are found for the same RAM stick in every available slot then you have a faulty RAM module. On the other hand, if no errors are found in the next slot or the other slots for the same RAM module, then you have a faulty DIMM slot.

Test each RAM stick and every motherboard DIMM slot available.

I just downloaded Half-life 2 and it seems that everytime I load it up, it rotates the screen 90 degrees counter-clockwise. I've tried restarting, and even rotating my own screen 90 clockwise in order to compensate but it doesn't seem to work!

Is this a problem with my video card or maybe something in the game? I've never even heard of this happening before. :S

I'm running it on my laptop:

THanks.

Thank you for viewing my post. The problem I am having is my Lenovo Yoga 710's start up/sign in screen glitches when I turn it on now. I noticed it started to do this yesterday, or maybe it was a few days ago. AKA, very recently. What I mean by "glitch" is that it likes to flicker from the image of the day background to a blank, black screen (indicating some kind of load?) and then back to the standard image of the day background. It happens fast, in a couple second intervals. It goes back and forth and does not stop until I click around an annoying amount to get the sign in bar to finally show up & stabilize, allowing me to type in my password and proceed from the ordeal. Once I am signed in, there are no problems otherwise (that I know of),  everything else runs beautifully. I will probably edit this post with an attached video. I just don't understand why this is happening, and if anyone has an idea how to fix this. It is not my laptop, entirely, I share it with my father. So I don't want him thinking that I did something horribly wrong to damage it, when whatever is happening seems like just an unattractive & annoying hiccup.

This machine has had 1 problem since I purchased it in 2004 and it ended up being the keyboard. Great machine that came with Office 2003 Small business and XP Pro and I upgraded to 2 Gb of RAM via Crucial which works very well with the 3.4 GHz Extreme CPU, heck even the ATI 9700 Mobility Video got an update with the W7 driver.
Picked up a copy of Partition Magic to segment the HDD and an unused Windows 7 32 Professional package from someone who was not going to upgrade his Vista PC with. Took about 35 minutes to load W7 32 Pro and another 10 minutes to find and download updates and drivers for my EIZO S2110W monitor and Audigy NX2 USB Sound card and it runs very well. Admittedly the WEI of 3.4 isn't up to the 6.0 my main PC gives but I'm very pleased.

I just acquired a used Compaq Armada 7800 laptop, Pentium II 300Mhz, running WinXP Professional.

On and off during the day I checked various things, to more or less familiarize myself with what I had bought, etc. Everything seemed fine, including the battery.

Later in the day, with the unit plugged into the AC, I was installing some software, and during the installation the computer suddenly went "dead". I pressed every button I could find, including the power switch. I disconnected/reconnected the power cord, and removed/reinstalled the battery, but nothing produced any signs of life. No screen; no indicator lights; no sound; no nothin'.

I didn't know what else to do, so I just let it sit. About 15 minutes later I tried again, and voila! It came to life. I used it for about 40 minutes, installed the software as I previously tried to do, and everything worked fine. I then merely closed the cover and let it "sleep" for the night. The folowing morning I opened the lid and the computer came alive, as if nothing was wrong.

I suspect this wasn't just a one-time event, and expect it will happen again unless I 'fix' something. Can someone please tell me what might be wrong, what I should look for or do, to prevent this from happening again. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Hi!

Im trying to figure out how to make my laptop LiIon battery last longer. Ive been searching the internet, but the information is very varied. Some say its best NOT to discharge the battery completely, others say I should use the 40%-80% range, and again others say I should charge and discharge the battery completely on regular basis. Why are there so many different suggestions?

A:Laptop battery life

What you really ought to consider is a multi-cell battery for a laptop.
Some are only three cell, others are four or six sells. When I switched to a 9-cell battery for My Thinkpad T-60, my world changed for the better.
As for your question, most actual tests show it is best to totally discharge the battery periodically, then recharge it. Otherwise you run into problems of battery "memory" where it has a difficult time creating a full charge after a period of partial charges.

I'm new to the boards. Apologies if this is a tired topic, but I would appreciate feedback. I'm about to buy my first laptop, and am finding out that the one I'm trying out, a low-priced model (Toshiba Satelite M30X/M35X Series), lasts only about an hour and a half before needing to be recharged (if playing a dvd, it lasts only about an hour). Somehow I had guessed that batteries lasted longer in laptops. Am I nuts?
Two questions:

1. What is the normal life for a laptop battery?

2. And if I want to stay in the relatively low-price arena, what are the best laptops to consider in terms of battery life?

Thanks.

A:laptop battery life

1. I'd say between 45 minutes and 3+ hours. My Thinkpad lasts on average 2 1/2 - 3 hours doing office work.

2. Depends if you think Thinkpad is in the relatively low-price arena.

Welcome to techspot

if you could list the specs of the laptop so we can help you better

there are many things you can do to make an old computer faster, the best was would be to upgrade your ram you can use crucial's adviserwww.crucial.com to tell you what type you need also if you dont have any valuable things that you want to keep you could reinstall your operating system to clean out all the crap

Just curious...

I have 3 laptops. 3 yr/old HP gets just under 2 hours. 1 year old HP gets about 2 or so hours and my 2 month old Lenovo gets nearly 4 hours.

A:What's your laptop's battery life?

2 month old compaq does about 5 hours on high performance, and 6 on balanced,8-10 on power save.

Hi,

I recently bought a brand new Sony Vaio laptop and it stated that the battery life of this laptop is 3.5 hrs. Now since the battery is fully charged on my laptop it is telling me that I only have 2.50 hrs at a 100%? Anyone know why that is, or do I have to go back to the retaiiler and purchase a new battery ?. The laptop is covered under warrenty, since I only purchased it about 6 days ago.

That sounds about right.....if you go into Power Options in Control Panel...you can set things for power saving and make the battery last longer.......

HP 2225nr, Vista Home Premium, 2 GIG RAM, 160 GIG HD

When I depress the "on" switch, HD light blinks once. All other lights come on as expected. Fan runs two-three seconds and stops. It sounds as though HD is spinning, but I can't tell for sure. Screen stays black. I've tried to start with two different fully-charged batteries as well as without a battery (power cord only). If I hold down the "on" switch for six seconds, the lights all turn off, and there is a slight power-off click.

What should I try first? Thanks!!!

I have been using this Laptop for more than a year now, and Im really disappointed with the battery life. Before that May-June 2017 Windows 10 update, Im normally getting around 3-4 hours of laptop runtime with minimal to moderate tasks, but now it was reduced to half. I already did the following:1. Battery replaced (original not oem or cheap knock-off)2. Windows 10 Reset3. Control background apps and start-up items.4. Everything was updated, even the Bios. When I complained about it, the service center mentioned something that it has something to do with being connected to a Wifi Network, even without downloading any updates. Kindly refer this to your engineering team. Also, the few minutes upon booting this laptop, the machine is somewhat laggy in terms of response, like asking someone who had just waken-up to do task that requires speed and precision. Lenovo might try to communicate with Microsoft regarding this matter as I believe that the system was not optimized for the succeding updates as of June last year.

When I am away for work I cannot always sign onto my laptop because it is not connected to my domain, eventually I resolve this by logging on as a local user then switching to a domain user. This appears to work
The domain is controlled by Windows 2003 SBS
What am I doing wrong?

A:Cannot sign onto my laptop when away from home

This is a setting on the domain server for cached logins. You'll need to talk to your domain administrator about it and they should be able to get it fixed.

Hello,

I bought a new HP computer (model dv2828ca) and for some reason on Vista it shows the % of how full the battery is, but it doesn't tell me how much time I have left on the battery.

I have like 4 battery's from older HP laptops, and all with different life expectancies. I would like to know, when I put each battery in my laptop how much time I have left until my laptop is out of battery.

I tried installing a Vista widget which shows the battery % and it was advertised to also show how much time left until the batter is dead, but sadly it only showed the % and not the time left. I also hate widgets, but if it's my only option then can someone send me one that works? If not, can someone please show me a better/good way to see how much battery time is left?

Thanks!

A:Laptop battery life not showing

All of my laptops never showed time just the % of charge.

So I was reading some articles online about prolonging lithium ion battery life. I recently got a new battery because my old one didn't work anymore..the second I'd unplug the power cord, the laptop would shut off because the battery was no longer good. So what can I do best to prolong the battery life?

I don't use my laptop for many "mobile" purposes and usually just keep it plugged into the AC cord on my desk I'd say 90% of the time. So should I occasionaly run just on battery power to a partial discharge and then fully charge it? I've read that full discharges are not good for LI batters, but should be done about once a month. So I guess my main question is since I don't use my laptop away from an outlet that much, what should I do? Remove the battery completely? Thanks for your input

A:Prolonging laptop battery life

Modern laptops have "smart chargers" that properly maintain the battery.

I never bother with removing or cycling the battery, my present one is 2 years old and still runs fine (on the rare occasion it gets used).

My opinion is that cycling the battery may add a very small percentage of life, but unless you know exactly what the optimum cycling is for that exact battery construction, you may also subtract a small percentage of life. But we will never know what the optimum for that construction is...

I work on the theory of leaving it alone and letting tha laptop take care of it. Thats what its designed for.
